Bachmann 2012? No decision yet, but leaning...

AP

FILE - Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn, speaks during a Tea Party town hall meeting at the National Press Club in Washington last month.

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro and Luke Russert
Two people close to Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) say she has not made a decision yet on whether she will run for president.

"At this point," one source said, "the decision has not been made."

That said, Bachmann appears to be leaning in the direction of running, or at least forming an exploratory committee.

"There are definitely steps that have progressed," the Bachmann source said. She will make a decision likely this summer, the source said.

CNN reported that Bachmann will form an exploratory committee in June and possibly earlier. The sources would not confirm -- nor deny the story.

Why? Consider: the news of her potential run comes on a day in which she's making a speech today in Iowa.

Republicans unaffiliated with a 2012 GOP campaign believe this is a way for Bachmann to keep her name in the news and increase her visibility -- in an effort to get her visibility and poll numbers up, thereby improving her viability.

In other words: She's seriously considering a run, she's putting out feelers, and if she believes she has a shot, she'll do it.

The official statement from Bachmann's office is as follows: "The Congresswoman is grateful for all the encouragement she's received. She will make a decision about 2012 this summer. There is a natural timeline to these events and they will run their course."

A GOP fundraising source speaking on background tells NBC: "She's been in Iowa a ton and can definitely raise money, we think with her millions she could definitely launch a presidential bid. She has people in position to do it."

Ed Brookover, a political consultant who has worked with Bachmann since she first ran for the House in 2003,  said that Bachmann is "being aggressive in her planning process."

Another source close to Bachmann said she'll continue to travel to the early states of Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida and that she has authorized her staff to talk to individuals in those states who could help in the event that she does run for president.

The source also contends that Bachmann has a donor base of close to 160,000, quite a large number and a good place to start if she were to run.

She has been in Iowa since Tuesday and will head back to Minnesota tomorrow. She will return to Iowa Saturday.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Catherine Chomiak notes what Bachmann herself said about a potential bid on a radio program today:

"I'm in to make sure that Barack Obama is a one term president just like we're all happy that Jimmy Carter didn't have a second term. I'm in for that and I'll be making a decision about whether or not I will be a candidate by sometime this summer because I think it's important that a candidate participates in the Iowa straw poll."

*** UPDATE 2 *** CNN also reported that Iowa state Sen. Kent Sorenson "has been hired to be Bachmann's political director for the state." But Sorenson tells First Read he has "not been hired." He said he has been traveling with her for the past two to three days, wants her to run, is encouraging her to run, thinks she's "leaning in that direction," and that if she does he would likely be part of her campaign.

When someone can prove to me that this woman truly has a brain, I may then at least listen to what she has to say. And I'm dead serious about this.

Right now, everything that comes out of her mouth = noise...kinda like a dog with brain infected pavel disease.

Although, I think Palin belongs no where near public office, I would surmise that Bachmann rivals her... probably a lil worse.

Reallly, she stupid?

Say Tundie how do you explain the fact that she passed the bar?

Would you agree that is kinda tuff? Maybe she just got lucky?

I get you don't like her, but come on she graduated college, law school and passed the bar. It certainly does not make her a rocket scientist, but stupid?

Stop Obamulating and make a decision

Ummm, Stevei-o it is not Obamulating. President employs intelligent, critical thinking, and careful determinations. Michelle Bachmann, on the other hand, has the thought process of a Smurf, like her big mouth girlfriend, Sarah Palin.

Those 2 have the thought process everyday speech of Smurfs. And they use Smurf language; seemingly. Only t-baggers understand the kiddie language of Bachmann and Palin omissions of current and historical thoughts they omit.

Spanky, actually even though she passed the bar... you gotta at least admit it though, she sounds kinda dumb (maybe it's an act???).... the only type of women you guys on the right have to offer (with the loudest mega-phone) are:

- Sara Palin,
- Bachmann,
- Sharon Angle,
- Witch lady (what's her name again)...

doesn't that just demean the republican women? I think it does..... because people like Olympia Snow and Collins seem to actually think before they vote.... they better represent what republicans should be like.

Ever heard of "book smart common sense poor"? This woman may be a lawyer (though there are a LOT of stupid lawyers out there), has a disconnect in her brain between reality and her mental processes. She can spout inaccurate information all day long and her adoring fans fall for all of it... but then someone crashes her party and points out how wrong she IS (with facts to back them up) and she STILL stands by her original statements. That, my friend, I call an idiot.... or at least a self-serving politican who will say or do anything to stay in the lime-light. Her own party (Rep) don't really like her for this same reason, but they are so afraid of the tea-baggers, they fall all over themselves to kiss her #$%.

Tundie it would appear you have answered you own question, i.e. you know better.

So why did you choose to leave Collins and Snowe off your list? And really, those are the only republican women out there? Why no, you listed others.

But you point is she is stupid. So it was just luck - the college, law school and bar?

P.S. Pelosi sounds kinda dumb "we have to pass it to see what's in it." That was all good? Ever heard Boxer speak?

Oh and what exactly "should republicans be like" Tundie? Do tell, cause we tend to forget apparently.

I thought better of you Tundie. My mistake.

And I do understand your not wanting to back up Pelosi or Boxer.

Passing the bar only means that she is good at taking tests, but maybe 'stupid' is not the correct word to describe this woman. I would describe her as 'bat sh*t'! I would love for her to run against Obama...that would make his re-election soooo much easier. I'm just sayin'.

Well Spanky, if Michelle Bachmann isn't stupid then she sure thinks that the general public is. I saw her on two different interviews (PBS & Fox) within a couple of days and both times she was holding up a sign with some number and a bunch of zeros on it to make her point about govt. spending. I've never seen somebody latch onto a talking point quite like that and then just pound it over and over and over again regardless of the questions asked or context of the conversation. It's like an artillery assault on your senses and an insult to intelligence of the American people...

I'm all for cutting the budget, and the deficit, in a substantial and thoughtful way but anyone using flashcards to make a political argument is either operating at a 4th grade mental capacity or thinks that their audience is... Judy Woodruff looked like she wanted to reach through the screen and shake Bachmann to death every time she held up her stupid little sign.

Trump is just another loser like Bachman and Palin. I don't see anyone in my party that 1) makes sense when they make statements, 2) know facts instead of spouting non-truths, 3) knows what to do to get America moving forward again. Most of what I am seeing from my party "leaders" are morons without a thought of how to proceed, but with the determination to have the "teabaggers" tell them what they should be thinking/doing without upsetting the "apple-cart" so that they can continue to be elected. I might remind those morons that if they had run someone other than brainless teabaggers in some of the senate races (Angle, for instance), both Houses of Morons would be in Republican hands...though I still doubt that they would know what to do.

Steve,

First: We didn't go to war. This is a U.N. action.

Second: Members of Congress actually were briefed prior to the first shot, regardless of what you're hearing from people who have their own agendas.

Third: The Latin America trip is to increase our exports, which relates to creating and expanding U.S. Jobs. Yes, jobs, like the GOP campaigned on and hasn't done squat or even talked about about since they assumed the majority. Latin America is a huge emerging market for goods and services. I suppose you'd rather that Europe and Asia got all their business deals instead of the U.S. preventing our economy from improving and showing the White House as doing something positive about jobs so the GOP has a better shot in 2012 and beyond.

Maybe this is too complicated for you Steve. WAR is a legal condition. The declaration of war by Congress changes the rules by which we fight and how we civilians live during the period of war time. Military action and hostilities are not a declaration of war. They may be actions similar to war, but if you think that this is a distinction without a difference you are both ignorant and wrong.

I would love to see a new poll on whether the US is ready for a female President. It would also be interesting to see a break down by political party. I am sure there are misogynist in both parties, but I have always gotten the impression that there are more on the right side of the aisle. Could a female candidate make it through Republican primaries? Not saying it is impossible, but its unfortunate if they have to start at a disadvantage that could be difficult to overcome.

Many of us have learned to ignore Spanky and TA. They are sh1t-pot stirrers, agents provocateurs essentially, who come along simply to spread the Obama-bashing. There is NOTHING this President can do they would approve of. They distort and lie and spread propaganda. And they LOVE dragging the discussion off topic. Some folk opine that the more responss they get, the better their pay.

But when you ignore them, they go bonkers. Just little angry mousies who stamp they little tiny feet, and soil the carpet.

True American-2367375

Tunde....we ARE leading it and Obama IS trying to pass it off as quickly as possible. So, why did he wait almost 4 weeks for permission to do it? This is America, the president, if he wanted to intervene, should have gone to Congress 3 weeks ago and asked the American people what to do, NOT wait for permission from the UN.......get it?

He waited for weeks actually deciding whether we needed to go to war; its a tough decision - one that should not be taken lightly. If to you being decisive is to go in, start shooting an ask questions later, then we can bring Bush back for you. You have to know what you are getting into, the risks from all perspective.

Asking the current congress what to do? that must have been a joke. I bet you a million bucks that instead of congress actually thinking about what's best to do, they will politic the situation while lives are lost in Libya... and I'm 100% certain you will come back here and complain that the president is not taking the lead.

It technically isn't a war, it is a conflict under the War Power Act of 1973. As long as Obama notifies Congress within 48 hours he can commit military resources for up to 60 days (plus another 30 for a withdrawal) without an authorization from Congress. The US Congress has only declared war 5 times in the history of the country, with the last being World War II. Neither Afghanistan or Iraq were declared wars, they were authorizations to use the military.

The stuff she says publicly suggests her grasp of American history and science isn't up to the level of the average 8th-grader. It really calls into question how she qualified for a law degree.

"When someone can prove to me that this woman truly has a brain"

Oh, you mean like both Obamas who supposedly have law degrees but neither has a license to practice law?

WHat lawyer willingly gives up his license to practice law? None with a brain or a clue. The only ones who do were in violation of their oath to uphold the law. That would be the Obamas.

When will the left start doing their own research on the bobble heads they elect? Probably never. Too busy running up debt, whining because they want more but too lazy to work for it, thinking everyone else owes them something.

Bottom line: lazy, uninformed, think MSNBC is their brain, uneducated in subjects that matter, and did I say lazy? Liberal Arts is a copout education pursued by those who never wanted a real job. Political science isn't even about science. It is about those who never wanted a real job.

My guess is that most who vote for leftists never wanted a real job, think someone else owes them a living, and, for the most part are lazy. Prove me wrong if you can with something other than "just because."

Of course those leftists who have the guts to respond won't provide a single statistic to back anything they say, because they can't.

I have provided so much proof over the couple of years I have been on the vine, that has been totally ignored by the left, without so much as a response, that it is almost conclusive that the majority of the whiners have no skill at googling anything, much less the truth.

Bob- You are incorrect. Maintaining a law (or medical or any other professional) license is expensive. There is continuing education that costs time and money, and there are license fees every year. If you aren't going to use it because you are working as say, president of the US and first lady, you might choose not to renew it. #1.61 - Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:04 PM EDT

@Dont: The President voluntarily gave up his license (retired) since he was not practicing as an attorney.

            Mr Randall,

Tunde Akins, I really doubt your education. Maybe in politiCAL "SCIENCE" which isn't a science, ro liberal arts, which have nothing to do with art.

I don't need to defend my stand, because I already have. You won't defend your stand because you have no stand, other than leftist want something for nothing, probably bring race into it, wannabe.

            Come back? Doubt you will.

Wrong again, I do not have a degree in Liberal Arts or Political Science... I care about the country that's why I pay attention to politics....

...let me give you a hint..... I tutored all calculus levels while in college... and also tutored graduate applied maths courses, while I was younger. Ok a better hint: if you own a car, I must have helped design at least one integrated circuit (i.e. chip to you) in it...if you own a cell phone, I probably have help produce at least one chip in it. Also, I have a graduate level degree.... so you do the math... and guess again Sir.

Most real Americans will vote for a woman who has a law license than a mulatto that lost his over suspicious circumstances.

What a completely inept thing to say...Mr Randall, is this a joke, or are you for real? I'm truly wondering.

            Bobs points:

            1. "Oh, you mean like both Obamas who supposedly have law degrees but neither has a license to practice law? WHat lawyer willingly gives up his license to practice law? None with a brain or a clue. The only ones who do were in violation of their oath to uphold the law. That would be the Obamas."

"Maintaining a law (or medical or any other professional) license...costs time and money, and there are license fees every year. If you aren't going to use it because you are working as say, president of the US and first lady, you might choose not to renew it." -- Dr. Dr.

Then again maybe you are correct about Obama's law violations are the reason why he is our president rather than a licensed lawyer. Great point! Way to analyze!

            2. "When will the left start doing their own research on the bobble heads they elect? Probably never. Too busy running up debt, whining because they want more but too lazy to work for it, thinking everyone else owes them something. Bottom line: lazy, uninformed, think MSNBC is their brain, uneducated in subjects that matter, and did I say lazy? Liberal Arts is a copout education pursued by those who never wanted a real job. Political science isn't even about science. It is about those who never wanted a real job. My guess is that most who vote for leftists never wanted a real job, think someone else owes them a living, and, for the most part are lazy. Prove me wrong if you can with something other than 'just because.'"

When will you realize that watching Fox news and visiting conspiracy sites on the internet is not research; nor is reading something and forgetting to analyze and checking the legitimacy of your information. Even those who have the "lazy" liberal arts degree realize that. Not to mention political science majors who at sometime or another used peer reviewed literature to do research. The problem is some people don't want to do the work to fact check themselves. Be careful because some might call that lazy. Oh, and heres an idea: before you ask to be proven wrong provide some details to support your wild assertions.

            3. Of course those leftists who have the guts to respond won't provide a single statistic to back anything they say, because they can't.

Did not take guts, just a good sense of humor. Btw, where were your statistics, let alone facts or details supporting your claims.

            4. I have provided so much proof over the couple of years I have been on the vine, that has been totally ignored by the left, without so much as a response, that it is almost conclusive that the majority of the whiners have no skill at googling anything, much less the truth. BTW, google is a leftist site. LOL

This must be why you feel as if you are exempt from providing any evidence to back your recent posts. And by this time, I am really considering whether your last comment was serious or not. Google for the most part is a database that uses formulas to display results. But, since Math and science has a liberal bias you might be right. Evil Scientists!!!

I'm actually a bit surprised that the women's groups in America haven't come out against Palin and Bachmann, as these two have done more to stall women's liberation and equality than anyone else I can think of. Some people were actually considering the possibility of a female president, like Clinton, but now? Maybe they're not quite ready yet. If they haven't got the guts to speak out against these two T&A candidates.

Guys, I actually kinda disagree with you a lil bit.... this woman should be no where near the red button. (not a life-time away... possibly 6 or 7 college degrees away).

She's proven to be a little less intellectually capable.... by her running, it just shows the rest of the world what the US politic has become = A complete joke.

I would rather some sensible republican/conservative run, so then we can discuss true differences between the candidates ideologies, when debating president Obama.... maybe people will start tuning in and once again driving the agenda of congress.

With Bachmann running, all we would here about is: birther, muslim, terrorist, socialist, death panels, congressional investigations, kenya, madrassa.... etc....etc... I know I could continue forever with this.

Say, how about John Edwards? Teddy Kennedy?

            Spanky-

So Tundie you seem very familiar with her, do you know her? Ever spoken with her?

I've watched her speak on numerous occasions (MSNBC, FOXNEWS, and CNN) - and not just snippets, even before she became famous... and back then, I thought there was a screw loose - like I said earlier, it may be all an act to get the attention... but tis what i see; and the only thing I can judge her by.

Is the sum and substance of your knowledge of her what you see on the TV?

            yes

By the way what did it show the world when say Jesse Jackson ran? Al Sharpton?

I'm actually equal opportunity here... I don't think either had any business running for president. Jackson even more so than Sharpton, but all the same to me.

Say, how about John Edwards? Teddy Kennedy?

Don't know too much about Kennedy's run, but I'm so glad John Edwards lost to Obama.... he would have been a total disgrace to the nation - he actually is a total disgrace - not because he had an affair... but just the way it all ensued i.e. dying wife with cancer, and him trying to cover it up and lying. Just to think he was lying, , having an affair and running for president at the same time. John Edwards should be ashamed of himself.... he could have really made the US seem like a laughing stock around the world if he had won.

However, while you may not like the personal lives of Edwards or Kennedy, they certainly could stand up ANY day on intelligence with Mzzzz Bachman. Though I suppose they told as many lies as she has.. so you may have a point.. :-)

In addition Spanky, you ever spoken with ANY Presidential Candidate? I'm impressed if you have. The HUGE majority of us haven't and have to rely on research. I'm sure that iw what Tundie has done just as I have.

Glad to see that all that radiation from the Japan "meltdown" ravaging the West Coast hasn't reduced you to another liberal mutant.

How many Volts did Obama and GM sell last moth - less than 250? And the guy Obama put in charge wants to up production to 100,000 next year? What would that leave them - about 8,000 short of production and sales goals?

I know, that's next year, a long time away. They should be able to increase demand by a factor of 33 times. And if they fall short, there is plenty of pad - It only cost $41,000.00 to make the car that sells for $42,000.00. Of course the tax payers have to pay $7,500.00 to every sucker that buys one, but who cares?

And libs here at FR think Bachman doesn't have a brain? They think Palin is a joke?

WHY ARE YOU SO CONCERNED ABOUT BACHMANN? You are voting for Obama no matter what he does anyway.

            Tunde:

You say Republicans should be like Snowe and Collins. Just say that is the way liberals WANT the Republican party to be. Liberals do not get to shape the Republican party, that is why we have different parties in this country.

You liberals seem to be obsessed with what the Republican party is doing. Every story is always about what some Republican is doing. You need to be watching some of those clowns in your own party.

            IntheMiddle, TX,

When I say Snowe and Collins...I honestly just saying that it's OK to have an ideology, but to often break from it every once in a while for the betterment of the country. I singled out their names because we are afterall talking about republican women... if you want, I could have mentioned Dick Lugar as someone I also admire from the republican men.... this trait is limited in the republican party congressmen/women, but dems are generally more willing to listen or engage in a meaningful debate. It seems the republican mentality is this "Either my way or the highway"...that mentality needs to stop.

I mean, look at idiots like Huckabee, Pawlenty, Santorum, Gingrich running around the country talking about Kenyan this and Kenyan that... birther movement leaders. I didn't bring them into this because it's not worth it.... but you at least can agree that these guys are IDIOTS; trying to reduce our citizenry to a bunch of brainless buffoons. at least 50% of republican leaders think and talk like the aforementioned.... that's said, isn't it? Disclaimer: my 50% is just a guess....that seems sorta true.

Dont get me wrong, we have crazies on the left too...but we can count them on our fingers and possibly model the percentage of the general population of crazies... the right is disproportionally loaded with a lot of crazies.

The Republicans are desperate to defeat this president and will stop at nothing to lie, cheat and twist facts, that most people will just turn it off. Don't be surprised to see the birther issue front and center again, either. That's too bad, because I think they would have a real chance if they would tell the teabagger's to shut up and let the people who know how to get things done, take the lead. Problem is, that ain't gonna happen, so the Party of No will just keep shooting themselves in the foot.

I think there should be some kind of IQ test before anyone can run for the presidency. That would weed out the total idiots that think they should be president. Maybe O'Donnell could be her VP?

Bring her on, along with all the others who have aspirations to entertain us. They will keep us amused with their absurd and irrational claims of birth certs. or lack thereoff, places of birth, and where the President lived or didn't live growing up etc. etc. Is he a Muslim, is he a socialist, is he a Marxists, never in the history of the this country has a president been so maligned, so critiqued as our present President over the most petty and inane reasons.

Of course the media help in all of this, running around breathlessly hanging on every word these charlatans utter, puffing them up beyond their relevance in the scheme of things. Truly, there is a fool born every minute and they mostly become American voters.

You are so right about the media elevating these irrelevant bit playes like Bachmann and Gingrich. That is why uneducated voters actually think they are important!

While Bachmann apparently is more educated than Palin she does not have the personality and by most accounts her appearances on cable news shows would indicate that she has some mental issues.

Barack Obama worked so hard to get where he is in life and these vicious people talk about him like he fell off a turnip truck instead of graduating from two prestigous universities with honors!

This is a pathetic state of affairs for our country.

Dear Gingerbread and Sheila, c'mon, give the Republicans and the press a break! They don't have anyone else, or anything else to talk about. They have to say something! Don't you remember what it was like, having to write an essay on a really bad piece of literature. This is all the news media has to work with, and they have to do it 24/7. Thank God I don't have their job!

That scary, vacant look, straight into the camera, repeating over and over again "I AM RUNNING BECAUSE GOD TOLD ME TO RUN. GOD SAYS YOU MUST VOTE FOR ME....Wait, did you ask a question? What must we do in the middle East? I AM RUNNING BECAUSE GOD TOLD ME TO RUN. GOD SAYS YOU MUST VOTE FOR ME....." If it doesn't scare all the children, it could be a laugh riot!

                  Big picture NewDay. Big picture.

So do you think the rise of the tea party had anything at all to do with Obama's tax cuts for the rich? Do you suppose conservative values had anything to do withObama's war on Libya?

But go ahead and go with your entertainment. Another very conservative voice in the mix effects not just republicans, but also the democrats.

Or were the tax cuts signed into law because Obama love only rich people?

Deep thought NewDay. Keep up the good work.

I am a little bummed though because, being a woman, having people like Bachmann, Fox, Palin, Angle, etc. spouting their nonsense on a daily basis demeans the rest of us, so I look at their total lack of any intellect as an aberration and not an indictment of the rest of us who actually have and use our brains on a regular basis and to thoughtful and intelligent women in politics who don't grab the spotlight to spread hate, divisiveness and lies, but try to get things done (my Senators in WA State -- Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell are two great examples of women with smarts, compassion, and a willingness to shun the spotlight to address our nation's problems).  Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska is turning out to be a thoughtful Independent woman as well.  To all who use their intelligence to better our country and world, my hat's are off to you.

Nothing wrong with questioning a person's intelligence and capability, male or female. Face it, Bachmann and the 1/2 governor of Alaska are poor representations of intelligent and capable women. Any remark questioning ability and intellect regarding a potential U.S. president is not sexist. Kay Bailey Hutchison is intelligent and capable; she would be a more viable presidential candidate than Bachmann or Palin.

Linda, a few years back Patty Murray was voted "Most Likely to Not be a Rocket Scientist" by Washingtonian museum. She is considered pretty dumb on a national level, although Washington keeps sending her back just because she keeps running and has that seniority thing going for her. Also, there is always Democratic King County and few/no democrats challenge her. I knew the woman when we were both younger. She lost me when she went on national tv and actually said the Dept. of Justice was "pickin' on Bill Gates." Believe me if Patty Murray can make it to the Senate--Palin and Bachman can sure embarass the hell out of us and run for the Presidency.

It's actually pretty frustrating. Instead of championing a smart, insightful, forward looking person they keep coming up with this substandard group of possible candidates and crowing on and on about them.

They really need to get past their obvious disdain for education and educated people and try to actually put forth a fully qualified candidate that can appeal to all walks of our society, not just a very narrow, albeit noisy, minority.

I must confess though, Bachmann enamores me very much. It is a very admirable trait to be able to believe in something which you know is ignorant, but continue to believe it because you know in your heart (or lack of it) that its a good thing to worship falsehood. Just imagine a republican primary debate with Bachmann, Gingrich, Trump, Palin and Huckabee--all talking about birth certificates and Kenya. The late night hosts will have enough matertial to last a decade.

I am living for that moment, Jody. It will be even better than 2008.

Jody Mr Gingrich has threatened to run for about 10 years and I suppose this time he won't again. He just loves getting all that free money and then pocketing it for his own personal use later.

                        Wow!

You must have watched the same special on TV that I did last week. Newt has been campaigning for the last ten years under the pretense of running for office. He travels all over the world in his private jet with his healthy wife raking in around 30 million dollars a year.

Due to some campaign loop hole, He's allow to collect this money and write off 27 million dollars a year as campaign expenses.

What a complete scam! Just like Sarah Palin, He's a money making machine and what's so pathetic is the fact that people are too blind to see this.
