Lawmakers huddle with Obama on Libya

From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell and Carrie Dann
At 2pm ET, President Barack Obama is scheduled to make his first public comments addressing last night's United Nations Security Council vote to impose a no-fly zone over Libya.

His remarks will take place after an emergency bipartisan meeting of key lawmakers, who are discussing the situation with the president at the White House.

Several members of Congress will participate by phone because they are no longer in Washington after wrapping up legislative business yesterday. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner,  and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor are among those who will call in to the meeting.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will be at the White House.

Here's a list of the participants:

Majority Leader Harry Reid

Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer

Senator Carl Levin

Senator Dick Lugar

Senator Saxby Chambliss

Rep. Mike Rogers

Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger

Speaker John Boehner

Majority Leader Eric Cantor

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

Senator Dick Durbin

Senator Mitch McConnell

Senator John Kyl

Senator John Kerry

Senator Diane Feinstein

Rep. Buck McKeon

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen

Rep. Howard L. Berman

True American-

Wait, we're supposed to invade every country that has a dictator by ourselves? Looks like we're going to need to raise taxes after all, to pay for all the troops that will be drafted from our citizenry.

I'm just comforted by the thought that with all the military experts, Sec of State, Diplomats, President, Vice President, and many, many expert advisors, we still have one guy that is SO much smarter than all of them put together in our midst.

(what I don't find so comforting, though, is the fact that he would rather waste all his genius-infused time on these boards poking everyone else in the eye with a sharp stick. Ain't that True, American?)

Hey, I resent that, True. I, for one, am an ATYPICAL left-wing coward.

So there!!!!!

.

Be careful what you wish for, True. You just might get it. Just like we got Iraq.

But I'm sure you'll be happy to explain it to all the families whose children may die for THIS folly. Just like your hero, George W. Bush, explained it to all those families whose children's funerals HE didn't attend.

Or wait. They DID get actual machine-signed letters from Donald Rumsfeld offering condolences, didn't they?

There must be a loose screw somewhere.

I promise I'll get on that today. And thanks so much for your concern.

But which post? They're ALL nonsensical jibberish, aren't they?

After all, if anyone else would recognize it, YOU would.

ABC News:

Whatever military action takes place against the forces of Col. Moammar Gadhafi will be in keeping with President Obama’s desire that this conflict be seen as a showdown between the Libyan regime and the international community, senior administration officials tell ABC News. This includes not just NATO forces, but conspicuous Arab involvement.

President Obama expects that Qatar and the United Arab Emirates will participate, as leaders from those countries have committed to do, officials say. Other Arab countries are considering participation. The Arab League over the weekend endorsed the idea of a no-fly zone, but getting leaders from those countries to go from talk to action is no small task.

…President Obama has tried hard not to feed into Gadhafi’s megalomaniacal worldview by making this confrontation him versus Obama, or the US versus Gadhafi, officials say. With US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the president is also sensitive to not have any pending military action be seen as the U.S. invading a third Muslim country.

In general, I find that those yelling names and accusing others of being cowards, bullies or angry are themselves actually the coward, bully or angry. It's called projection and there seems to be a whole butt load of projection going on by one particular right wing poster on this thread.

you know, when you don't have a leg to stand on, revert to theories, deflection, criticism, or anything else you can think because you can defend your off-the-mark position.

Personally, I prefer projection and denial. Not to mention reversion to the obtuse. Ad hominems work well, too, when I can't think of a fancy strawman. Which is just about anytime. Even my off-the-mark positions are off-the-mark.

Hey, now that you mention it, True, I'm just about ready to graduate to my new career as a conservative.

Thank you for that comment, Fancy. It is refreshing to see the rest of the world getting involved. Perhaps in an ideal world we could do more in these situations, but with our own deficit issues and 2 wars not going anywhere, it is time for other nations to step up, especially those closer in geography.

Be interesting to see what the President's approval rating has gone up to by next week. He was awfully silent during his week of deliberation. But immediately following his work with Japan and Libya, we have seen the price of oil start to drop and stocks start to rise.

I am learning never to underestimate the President's ability to grasp victory from the jaws of defeat. Doesn't it seem though, that Obama seems to have way too many things happening in the world for one term? Maybe it's just the 24 hour instant-read news cycle we have now.

Fancy This Too, well said. I gathered from President Obama's address that the effort will be funded, supported, and enforced by the coalition so it isn't just the U.S. President Obama is not a hawk but recognizes that allowing Gaddafy to continue his war on the Libyan people will destabilitize the entire region. My hunch is that Gaddafy will back off to protect his own backside.

Clotho, nicely done--too many do underestimate President Obama; they're quick to think he's not doing enough only to discover he's already figured out and put the solution in motion. I don't recall any President since Roosevelt who has dealt with one crisis after another in such a short time span. Even Chuck Todd made that comment last week.

I said it on another thread---the President goes about doing his job in his own style----he gathers a lot of facts, he evaluates alternatives, he works behind the scenes and he doesn't have a lot of leaks and on-the-record remarks during the process. I find it refreshing but the media and the pundits seem taken aback, even after 2 years.

Thanks for the shout out, Matthew.

I listened to President Obama's address and once again am impressed by his behind-the-scenes efforts to establish a coalition of UN, NATO and Arab League forces. The media and the critics who have whined that the President hasn't been doing enough again have egg on their faces. You'd think they would learn by now that just because Obama isn't speaking everyday does not mean he isn't busy working on solutions. Convincing Russia, China and three other countries to abstain from voting in order to allow the UN to proceed is no easy task. The President was clear and concise on exactly what the UN Resolution entails, no ground forces but the U.S. along with other countries will do what it takes to stop Gaddafy from killing the Libyan people. President Obama stated prior to ever running for President that he was opposed to "dumb wars"; I trust his judgement that this step is necessary to prevent the murder of thousands and the destabilization of the middle east.

I don't know if Domenico is going to do a 'Week Ahead' thread - so I'll post this here just in case! ;o)

Here's a formal invite to the newest member of the First Read Family - Greg in Detroit!

I’m sorry to report, that our usual Friday night ‘Master of Ceremonies’ is under the weather this evening!

Not to worry - Independent Redneck is tucked safely in a nice warm feather bed over at the Come Back Inn. We’re taking good care of him with some home-made chicken noodle soup (it’s good for the soul they say ;o) and a nice ‘hot toddy’ with honey!

What an action packed week around here @ FR! Domenico & Ali you deserve to sneak out a bit early and have a drink or two! You’re always welcome to drop by the Dew Drop Inn you know?

You both did a fabulous job holding down the ‘boiler room’ in Mark’s absence!

On a more somber note, let’s not forget the Japanese people and the suffering they’re going through!

We had quite a few loyal First Readers yesterday make a matching (or above) donation in honor of the generous action by Frank ‘Grimey’ Grimes brilliant son!

In case you missed the story, his son gave him $10.00 of his allowance money to send to the Red Cross because he knew the Japanese children don’t have any toys! Grimey being the proud papa he is, wouldn’t take the money but sent the $10.00 text donation on behalf of his son!

Most of us spend that amount a day on a latte or lunch – I challenge YOU to match the giving spirit exhibited by a little boy!

http://www.redcross.org/m

It’s got to be quitting time somewhere already –now who wants to head on over to the Dew Drop Inn?

We can kick back a few cold ones and play a game of ‘Where in the world is Mark Murray?’

Sure hope we don’t see him turn up on a Deputy Political Director’s Gone WILD’ DVD!

DBO – you’re in charge of the juke box for this evening! Some Smokey Robinson’s ‘Tears of a Clown’ sounds good! We can dedicate it to the ‘Weeper of the House’! lol

Steeler Fan, Clara and the rest of the ‘hoop addicts’ are in charge of the menu & I’ll make sure the bar is well stocked & bring my famous *popcorn*!

PS: The Spanky grama's comment was PRICELESS! LMFAO!

The UN declares a no fly zone....who will support this? Our aircraft carriers off of the coast? And at what fiscal cost, and possible life of our airman?

The situation is bad, but do we actually want to go into another theater of operations while still in two others. With our country broke, and a number of posters on the thread unhappy with the two existing conflicts, how will we, if directed, move to police another country at the behest of the UN? Do we have the funds or people to become involved. Heck, our troops have spent enough time and tours in foreign lands with no tangible results.

Are you ready to institute another draft? What is the UN plan other than sending planes, probably ours, in the air to combat the threat for those citizens? Has anyone heard of the US plan as yet?

I am no hawk, and neither a pacifist, but what tangible outcome are we moving to?

I suspect stock market stability Safecracker. Sanguine economic conditions, and of course, most importantly, humanitarian saving of human life. Just like we SHOULD HAVE done in Boznia / Herzegovenia.

Greg in Detroit, True American probably drives one of those jacked-up trucks too! After today he might want to put in a new lift kit. Might help him feel bigger.

    Odd you mention that Tom.

I've long noticed that the Connies seem to favor high-horsepower, big cars, trucks.

    Compensating for something are they?

The man is on vacation in Rio whilst we have crisis in Libya and other parts of the world. What kind of presidency is this. Barry is enjoying himself , isn't he?

I can see where you'd confuse International Diplomacy for vacation time. Cuz' clearing brush is SO MUCH MORE PRESIDENTIAL!
