House votes to bar NPR funding, against withdrawing from Afghanistan

From NBC’s Shawna Thomas, Luke Russert, and Domenico Montanaro

The budget vote was the major vote today but there were a couple of other votes of note in the House today. The House voted to bar NPR of federal funding and against withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.

On NPR, the vote was 228-192 with just Republicans voting in favor. Seven Republicans joined all 185 Democrats. Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), Tea Party freshman, voted “present.”

The measure would still have to be passed by the Senate and signed by the president to become law.

On Afghanistan, the House voted 321-93 against withdrawing troops. The breakdown (with Democrats essentially split): 222 Republicans and 99 Democrats voted against a withdrawal; Eight Republicans joined 85 Democrats in voting to withdraw. One Republican voted “present.”

Since I get all my news from FR I don't know what this is about. The last thing I recall posted aaround here had to do with Juan Williams. Did something else happen?

Would it have been slightly helpful to included, oh, I don't know a sentence or two about what happened in the article? I kinda think so.

And golly but there are three of you crack reporters on this by-line.

Wanna bet? the bankstas, Wall Street barons and Koch Brothers will milk the cow to death.

MICHIGAN: Gov. Rick Snyder’s (R) budget would make Michigan’s already regressive tax system even more unfair for the state’s poorest residents. The plan cuts taxes on business by more than 86 percent while slashing $1.2 billion in funding for “schools, universities, local governments and other areas.” Snyder also wants to raise personal taxes by 30 percent — an increase that will fall disproportionately on Michigan’s lowest income residents.

This from the same governor that has declared “Fiscal Martial Law” on his people, whereby his own discretion he can declare any municipality in the State as “Fiscally Insolvent” and then send in a civilian despot that has complete and total power over that Municipality firing all elected officials, like the Mayor, cancel contracts, like Union Contracts with teachers, fire fighters and police etc. with total and reckless abandon.

What do most of these States have in common? They are cutting things like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Homestead Rebates, Education, Medicaid, Pension and Health Care Benefits for public Workers, Heating Programs for Seniors, laying off Public Workers, closing Community Health Centers etc.

What else are they cutting? Property and Income Taxes for Corporations, Income and Estate Taxes for the Wealthy.

I pretty sure what she was saying is that the burden is felt disproportionately on the poor. If the increase forces Ed to downgrade from a lexus to a toyota and forces Phil to downgrade from eating 7 days a week to not eating 6 days a week, then the burden is felt disproportionately by Phil.

To argue otherwise would be the same as supporting a flat tax. The vast majority of Americans are agaist a flat tax.

Excuse me? If a person who has an income of $30,000 is taxed at a 30 percent rate, that person's disposable income is $21,000. If a person who makes $3,000,000 is taxed at 30 percent, that person's disposable income is $2.1 million. "Proportionately" it is the same, but in terms of "real impact," obviously the 30 percent tax rate hits the lower income person much harder than the person who already has way more disposable income than one person reasonably requires.

That's not "spin"; it's just math. And it's exactly what the word "regressive" means in this context. To suggest that the impact to both is somehow proportionate is the REAL spin and is merely an attempt to rationalize "capitalistic" greed and deny any responsibility, at least in your own mind, for its obvious negative consequences to others.

I don't support him because he's wrong, because that's not what he promised us, and because his being wrong is driving us right down the rabbit hole. Staying the course in Afghanistan is not good military policy and it's not good fiscal policy; therefore, the real reason has to be something else, and I suspect we need look no further than the huge cache of minerals that we have read so much about recently.

        http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/14/world/asia/14minerals.html

After all, many Americans believe that we rightfully own the rights to the oil in the Middle East, and I'm pretty sure, after consulting last night with God -- who happens to look a lot like Dick Cheney -- that we also are the rightful owners of all those minerals just waiting for us just east of the Sun and west of the poppy fields.

Because we need to finish what we started. If we pull out too soon, the country will fall back into the hands of the Taliban and the fragile government they have will cave and fizzle. We don't want that to happen because we lose credibility and would be perceived as having no resolve. That causes our enemies to not take us seriously, which threatens our security.

It's just the we are as a country. We want little girls to have the chance to go to school. We want women to have positions in the government. We don't like the rule that in order for a woman to claim she was raped, the rape had to be witnessed by at least four men. We don't like the idea of women being beheaded in the town square for minor infractions according to their husbands. We feel kind of bad for having supported the rebels years ago, but then pulled out, leaving them to be massacred.

So while, we're whining about having pay raises restricted to the rate of inflation, boo-hooing over the Cookie Monster, or going into an uproar over plastic forks in the Capitol cafeteria, our guys and gals are trying to exist in the misery of Afghanistan, sacrificing more than we can imagine, trying to give a little bit of liberty and freedom to a country of citizens who probably deserve a chance.

You can argue about why we're there and that it's all taking too long, but we are there. We have to finish.

Lisa, your loved ones who are serving - God Bless them and keep them safe. I hope they can return with happy and proud hearts very soon. They are doing amazing work - work that few of us will ever have a chance to do and make such a difference to so many people.

Defunding NPR, while the ususal suspects protect the rich corporations: ThinkProgress

Potential Republican 2012 presidential candidate Gov. Haley Barbour (MS) has been rolling out his economic vision this week, with his stated desire to “change the damaging policies that pose an even greater threat to our economic future.” One of the cornerstones of his economic plan is a huge cut in the corporate tax rate:

There is a global battle for capital, and right now, American companies are sitting on more than $1 trillion locked overseas because of our mistaken tax code. We need to unlock that capital so it can be invested in new plants, new equipment and new jobs here in America, not overseas. While we’re at it, let’s finally cut our corporate income tax rate as nearly every one of our competitors has done over the last decade.

Barbour envisions cutting the current corporate income tax, which stands at 35 percent, in half. “We need to cut the corporate income tax in half like the rest of the world,” he said.

Already, corporate tax revenue in the U.S. is at one of its lowest points in history, and the U.S. raises less in corporate tax revenue than many of its main trading partners. And the reason for this is simple: there are myriad loopholes, credits, and outright giveaways in the tax code that allow many corporations to pay little or no corporate income tax. Major corporations such as Boeing, Bank of America, and General Electric have paid literally nothing into the Treasury in recent years.

As governor of Mississippi, Barbour currently presides over a state with a 10.1 percent unemployment rate. He also has a history of implementing regressive tax hikes, while Mississippi has been mired at the bottom of national rankings when it comes to education, quality of life, and business climate. But as the Wonk Room demonstrated in this report yesterday, Barbour is hardly alone amongst conservative governors in believing that corporations need lower taxes while the working class should pay more.

The Congressional Budget Office has found that a cut in the corporate tax rate is an ineffective job creation measure, saying that such a move “does not create an incentive for [corporations] to spend more on labor” and “is not a particularly cost-effective method of stimulating business spending.” But Barbour may have another motivation for gifting a tax break to the corporate world.

After all, Barbour spent years as a D.C. lobbyist, during which time he represented some of the largest multinational corporations. Barbour’s clients have included Microsoft, Bellsouth, Lockheed Martin, Nestle, United Health Group, “and a bevy of energy, pharmaceutical and tobacco companies.”

        ___________

Cut education, get rid of unions, defund NPR, gut Social Security. Yes, do all this. While Barbour and the rest of his pals protect rich corporations.

        Pat,

Here is a perfect example of libs having thinkforme do their thinking.

        Paragraph:

        1. Statement of the obvious while leaving the final line "huge cut in the corporate tax rate."

So what? Is there any argument / discusion about tax cuts being bad? - No.

        2. Makes good points; global battle for capital; American companies have a trillion overseas; need for capital; tax codes keeping money overseas could be used for new plants, new equipment, new jobs here in America - last line - "cut our corporate income tax rate."

So what? Is there argument about tax cuts? - No

        3. Ditto - No argument by thinkprogress.

        4. Talks about how corp. income taxes are low, revenue is low and the reason is the tax code. Some don't pay anything.

Isn't this the conservative argument everyday? Corporations and the rich don't pay taxes - they keep the money overseas, put it in bonds, move the yacht, whatever. If the rates were lower, why would they not bring the money home? And if they brought that trillion home, why would they not try to turn it into 1.5 trillion and get richer? They would - they are the evil greedy rich right? Would they not have to invest it in plants, equipment new jobs etc? If Obama wants to spend more money say a trillion to stimulate the economy by investing to get corporations to create jobs - why not let the corporations just use their trillion - reduce the tax rate and let them bring it home. Cost us no money and the federal revenues will go up right? Win -win.

Think progress has made NO argument against cutting taxes!

        5. Basically an ad hominem attack on Mississippi, Barbour. Think progress makes no argument against his policies.

        6. Then a ridiculous cut-in-paste of the CBO that explains nothing, no why, no nothing

that a cut in the corporate tax rate is an ineffective job creation measure, saying that such a move “does not create an incentive for [corporations] to spend more on labor” and “is not a particularly cost-effective method of stimulating business spending.” But Barbour may have another motivation for gifting a tax break to the corporate world.

....and ends with a nefarious ad hominem warning about Barbour. (If the tax cuts ...see response in number 4.) Think progress argued nothing.

        7. Ad hominem stuff.

And you guys reprint this mindless crap day after day. Drivel!

You guys can not be this stupid to not realize that thinkprogress DID NOT MAKE ONE ARGUMENT!

No, and what's more, you already know it.

As Fortune Magazine exposed just recently, when given the opportunity to do exactly what you say back in 2004, the corporations that re-patriated their money DIDN'T use it for new plants, new equipment, R&D OR new jobs. They just distributed it to shareholders, who then tucked it into their pockets. In fact, most of the companies that re-patriated profits actually CUT jobs.

          http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2011/03/14/oracles-catz-says-businesses-need-1-trillion-tax-holiday/

As Fortune noted last month, much of the money from the last major repatriation in 2004 was doled out to shareholders, and not, as planned, directed mainly at research and development or new hiring.

Of course, putting money into the hands of shareholders can be stimulative, too, but the repatriation shouldn't be thought of as $1 trillion spewing into the economy as if from a firehose.

According to a 2009 study by the Congressional Research Service, of the top 12 repatriating companies in 2004, 10 cut jobs between that time and the beginning of the recession in 2008. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), for example, repatriated $14.5 billion, only to then lay off 14,500 workers.

Honestly, bob, I posted this the other day. And don't deny that you read it because you replied to the rest of the comment. So why, then, do you deliberately choose to keep repeating the same tired arguments, which can only be founded on your own delusions or the poppycock you hear on Fox.

The point here is to get at the truth. You cannot, as you like to do, claim to have a lock on the truth when you constantly ignore the facts.

          Anna,

Sorry if the old Evelyn Wood skills deserted me.

I am not angry. I don't take this stuff overly, seriously, and certainly never take it personally. Sorry if that comes across, I need to work on it. I felt you were pretty upset with me and decided to lay off some. I did respond to something the other day, but I honestly don't remember this. Maybe I had my mind made up with what I wanted to say, I don't know.

Anyway, about the post above, to my understanding - this is different than your example. Your example was a one year tax vacation. I am talking about and believe Barbour is talking about a permanent policy.

The vacation doesn't accomplish much, other than to return money to American banks / institutions as opposed to foreign. That is a big plus nevertheless in that that money can still be used to create jobs through loans to others.

But with regard to these companies, how would one year really benefit them? They can bring the money home, but can they build a plant, buy equipment, hire people, ramp up sales, produce the products, deliver the products all within the year to realize the tax break? Of course not. They will just be taxed the second year at the old high rate. Why bother - not worth it. That is why the temporary stuff doesn't work. Business is on a much longer plan.

Thanks for your response. You did a much better job than thinkprogress did.

In summary, I don't post, or repost anything that has been legitimately refuted. People like US Navy and this new guy - Replublicant - have posted post after post after being refuted, after never having responded to the challenge, after disputing the challenge keep posting the same crap. I have never knowingly done that. I won't either. I don't like being wrong and honestly - it is too easy arguing common sense and facts. I can't remember ever posting anything from Fox. Most of my stuff comes from RCP, WSJ, IBD, NRO etc. I don't use bloggers or other squirrely web sites. Like I said - I don't like being wrong. Too easy to be right with great sources. Nothing special, though.

          Have a nice evening Anna.

The amount of this cut is a drop compared to the billions given in tax breaks for big business. NPR is the only radio station many sparsely populated and rural areas of this country, many of them red states, have access to. One has to wonder about why republicans wish to deny fair and balanced informational programs from reaching the people--could it be keep them uninformed, keep them voting republican.

It is the exact opposite. The Democrats fund their leftwing propaganda outlets, PBS and NPR, with taxpayer money. NPR and PBS are shills for the Left. Defund them !

At least MSNBC doesnt get direct taxpayer money to shill for the Left....however, its former owner GE did get billions in "green" energy contracts from Obama.

To call NPR fair and balanced is truly an oxymoron. PBS is a different story. But you have to love how they get lumped together when it is convenient for trying to score political points.

Since Big Bird is from Sesame Street, and NOT in any way from NPR or Public Broadcasting, but is used by a commenter to make an asinine point - it is pretty obvious to me who the people are who want NPR to implode and why they prefer to spend their tax dollars for the enrichment of Haliburton, Iraq and Afghani politicians. I know none of them pulled out their abacus to tote up how many American tax dollars got flushed down those drains.

I don't understand the issue with funding for NPR. After all, wasn't it NPR who stated in interviews they didn't need government funding? What now, George Soros goes Big Bird?

Rob in ma - The next landslide election is going to be blood bath for Republicans. They just keep digging themselves into a deeper and deeper hole. Do anyone else see the pattern here: Give billions and billions in tax breaks and subsidies to corporations and go after education, Medicaid, Social Security/Medicare, salaries and benefits of public workers, etc. to pay for it. Create a law that allows administrators to come into a town and take it over right down to the elected officials. Then defund the towns to the tune of billions of dollars while giving business tax breaks at the same time. Seems like the classic definition of fascism to me.

laurie - I work for a nursing home. If you raise the cost of operations through higher taxes the business will simply cut cost in another areas ie staff reductions. Unemployment is where it is today because businesses had no faith in Obama to extend Bush's tax rates not to mention having to insure more people through obamacare. If you raise the cost of doing business then everyone pays.

My company recently sold. The owner made 26 million dollars for his sweat and risk. 5 million went to the government. what did the govenment do? nothing!

BTW: The vampire analogy strikes me as so apt!! I mean any repub worth his stock portfolio is a parasite on the middle class. It takes a lot of pent up outrage to scrape these twerps off our shoe.

I think America will accomplish this in November, AND they know it.

America forgot the reasons Obama is in the White House to begin with: people hated what the repubs had done to this nation. Not ancient history. Just wasn't that long ago.

For a bunch of people so against government isn't it curious to watch how many republicans are clammoring to get into it? I just don't get that.

The bill to defund NPR may die in the senate, but Miss Piggy will never forget who voted to keep funding pork for their own districts, Cantor (R) and Boehner (R) while cutting programs that fund quality programming.

Am Spectator: " If public radio's fans and underwriters were truly devoted to the mission of public radio, couldn't they step forward and raise the money needed to keep the small, rural stations alive? Or are they not as devoted to the mission as they claim? As only one in 10 NPR listeners gives money to keep his own public radio station alive, the last question answers itself. According to NPR's own data, nine of 10 public radio listeners don't find the content important enough to pay for it. If 90 percent of NPR listeners refuse to fund it, why should the rest of us?

If NPR "needs" federal funding, it's not because its work is vital to the country or it fills a void in the market. It's because its own customers don't value it enough to pay for it. That's an argument for finding more sponsors and underwriters, not for sending the bill to the taxpayers."

I find the balanced coverage at NPR of value. They present aspects of debate you won't hear on Limblaugh, Hannity, etal...

Karl Castle, Linda Wurthheimer, and even Cokie Roberts offer insightful thought-provoking viewpoints. A far cry from the screaming, crying Beck, Levine, Savage crowd.

I contribute to them. My neice used to work / report for them.

Thanks Bob1887. I think I'll send them a contribution right now.

The House of Representatives are the will of the people. Didn't I hear you Progressives and Dems keep repeating that during the last three years under Pelosi behind closed doors. You are the first to squirm and squeak about democracy except when you are on the other end. So sit down and let the representatives of the people govern and clear up the mess you left the country in.
