From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro and Luke Russert
AP reports that "a former aide to Rep. Alcee Hastings (D) is suing the Florida congressman for sexual harassment."
Hastings dismissed the allegations as "ludicrous," contending that the suit "contains numerous inaccuracies and untruths."
More from AP on the allegations:
"The conservative legal group Judicial Watch is representing Winsome Packer in her lawsuit filed Monday against Hastings and the Helsinki Commission that he chaired. Packer claims Hastings repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances, including trying to invite himself to her apartment and hugging her, and threatened her position when she refused him."
Hastings said, "When all the facts are known in this case, the prevailing sentiment will be, ‘How bizarre!’ I will win this lawsuit. That is a certainty. In a race with a lie, the truth always wins. And when the truth comes to light and the personal agendas of my accusers are exposed, I will be vindicated.”
What was Packer's role? She "served as the commission's staff representative in Vienna and says much of the harassment occurred when Hastings was in Europe on commission business," AP writes. "The commission advises on U.S. policy about security, human rights and other issues involving Europe."
Before serving in Congress, Hastings was removed as a federal judge after being impeached. He later served as chairman of a subcommittee on the House Rules Committee.
Here's Hastings’ full statement:
“My comments will be limited since I have not seen the complaint filed in U.S. District Court by Judicial Watch. I have seen a draft complaint prepared by my accuser that contains numerous inaccuracies and untruths.
“I have never sexually harassed anyone. In fact, I am insulted that these ludicrous allegations are being made against me. When all the facts are known in this case, the prevailing sentiment will be, ‘How bizarre!’
“I will win this lawsuit. That is a certainty. In a race with a lie, the truth always wins. And when the truth comes to light and the personal agendas of my accusers are exposed, I will be vindicated.”
NBC's Kelly O'Donnell notes, Hastings is a senior member of the House Rules Committee, ranking Democratic member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic chairman of the Florida Delegation.

What is her personal agenda; I wonder? With his checkered background it is going to be his disadvantage.
Say Bev. why was he removed as a federal judge?
That would take a whole lot of "skill."
Say is Alcee a member of the CBC? They really are taking a beating these days.
Where is everyone?
This is exactly the sort of story First Readers usually just love.
That is...
When it involves a Republican legislator.
It's driving home and/or supper time Mixed Bag.
Republican or Democrat makes no difference. If he is guilty he needs to pay the price, period. The same rules apply to both sides. No favorites here.

Hey Spanky-
Yes he is a member, but the CBC IS NOT taking a licking like the empty-headed punk Gov. Snot Walker and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald. In fact, he may be going to jail.

That little lying snot Walker would lose if the election were today 53% disapprove and 43% approve.
How 'bout that lie Gov. Snot told today about the 14 senators meeting him???
That little lying snot Walker would lose if the election were today 53% disapprove and 43% approve.
That Miller is insisting on the Illinois-Wisconsin border as a meeting spot is important, however. Sunday evening's Wall Street Journal piece was another in a series of articles suggesting that those Democrats who had fled the state were about to give in. State SENATE DEMOCRATS INSISTED THAT THE COMMENT WAS OVERPLAYED, though in a follow-up statement to The Huffington Post, Miller's spokesman didn't specifically refute the claim that his boss was prepared to head back to the capital and allow a quorum to take place

Update:
Walker calls Democrat's offer to negotiate 'ridiculous'
Democratic Sen. Bob Jauch of Poplar today dened Republican suggestions that he and fellow Democratic Se. tim Cullen had reached tentative deals with Republicans, only to have them undercut by Miller. "Never, Never has there been a suggestion that Tim Cullen and I would somehow abandon the other 12 for the sake of cutting a deal," Jauch told WisPolitics.com. "That's just an outrageous lie."

What's ridiculous is Gov. Snot Walker lies constantly and refuses to come the table to negotiate " collective bargaining"

Navy,
Agreed, if there is fire, where the smoke appears, then regardless of political persuasion, the individual needs to be held accountable.
Good comment.

really Bev?
I bet if he were a white Republican you would go chew his nut sack off and pay your own way.
Listen you rude racist freak I don't have to accept that cheap shot. FU
Jeez....where do they find people like you?
I know where they'd find you since you're twice removed from a yard ape; you freakish monkey.
FYI....It is ridiculous for a sitting governor to go and meet a bunch of LOSERS when he knows that real soon they will be meeting him at the state house.
LOSERS? Every poll taken democratic, independent, and republic including Rasmussen has the Gov losing.
FYI: your lying @aa governor didn't go to meet anybody. What he should do is sit down at the table and negotiate. Since he is a college drop out he doesn't know how.
my, my my bev, looks like you lied to us all when you said something to the effect of not condoning violence, but you sure do like to foment it. Wonder what Dr King would say about your hatred and bigotry. Got your white robe and hood handy?

FU is not violent moronic american.
This idiot insult me with a sexual slur. Don't you have a cross burning to attend??? Or is it you can't find your white sheet?
Frankly speaking, I don't give a flying flip about you or the rest of your racist cohorts who festoon hatred and bigotry.
The biggest difference seems to be that Dems tend to have sexual trysts with the opposite sex and Reps prefer bathrooms at airports. I think all sexual allegations should be handled in a private way unless a crime has actually happened. It should not be public until then. Who cares what politicians do "off the clock" their sex life should be as private as ours. If he broke the law, so be it. But, as a politician. they are vulnerable to people with other agendas.
No, the difference is when a Democrat is "caught," they resign. See Spitzer, et. al.
When the Republicans do it, it is ignored. See Vitter, et. al.
And please let's not forget Newt who wants to be our President. How are his morals holding up?
And why would you assume a personal agenda on her part? No staff member would make a charge like this of a sitting member of Congress just for some personal agenda. Whether its true or not, it will very likely be the end of her political career (that would be true by the way for either party).
In the comments about Sen Ensign today , the liberals told us that sexual misconduct by a Republican is just outrageous and intolerable...Not because it occurred, but because Republicans support "family values", try to 'impose morality' , and that such conduct by a conservative was therefore "hypocrisy".
Ergo, according to liberals, since Rep Hastings is a Democrat, and not worried about imposing "morality" , his alleged sexual harassment was not "hypocrisy"!
Ergo, such allegations are no big deal. In fact, to be expected, from an 'amoral" 'non family values' ' non-hypocritical' liberal.

Read post #1 booby trap; Gotcha.
What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty in this country?
Ensign was proven GUILTY
Did you miss the word: allegation?
As of right now - Hastings is innocent until proven otherwise...
Like you said, expected from a non-moral, hypocritical tea bagger!
PS: For the record if it comes out the charges are valid then, he's a scumbag just like the rest of the serial cheaters!
In the comments today, there were a lot of right wingers determined to talk about Clinton and Edwards to deflect the Ensign thread. It doesn't matter whether the person is a repub or a dem, infidelilty is what it is. Democrats, however, do not preach to the masses about family values while running around with another man's wife. It is the "preaching about holier than thou" that this democrat finds nearly as disgusting as the infidelity. I do not defend Clinton or Edwards or any guilty democrat but neither will I defend Ensign, Sanford, Vitter, Gingrich, Guilliani and the others who pretend to be morally superior while engaging in infidelity.
Feisty is a phony.
Sen Ensign admitted to an affair, but there is a pending Senate ethics investigation into his conduct. So he is not guilty of ethics violations. Only "allegations".
Did you give Ensign the benefit, because there were only allegations , or did you and your leftie cohorts rake him over the coals?
Another difference Bob overlooks is that Sen. Ensign actually did have an affair, and tried to pay off his lover's husband, it was proven, and admitted to his guilt. Rep. Hastings has only been accused, not proven or admitted to guilt. An accusation alone is not proof of misconduct, as there are people who will bear false witness for their own agenda.
Apparently, conservatives will readily forgive a conservative transgressor that confesses, but are eager to string up a liberal sinner, regardless of confession, guilt or innocence.
@Feisty: I'll give you 200 to 1 that this politician (and convicted former Federal Judge) is a scumbag, even if he did not sexually harass this woman.
Which makes him GUILTY of cheating on his wife!
I don't care how you twist & spin it!
I 'raked' him over the coals because he's a cheating 'C' Street hustler who got caught, and Mommy & Daddy had to come to save his sorry ass!
Bob, if this was about infidelity, then I would actually agree with the liberal argument you described. In the case of two consenting cheaters I have no issue unless you are then trying to force morals you don't live by on everyone. However, this is about unwanted sexual advances and retaliation which is heinous. So, if the claims are validated then this guy is a low life.
So Feisty, does the fact he has already been impeached and removed as a federal judge mean it is more likely, or less likely that he is totally a scumbag?
I think we already know, right?
@ Charles: He's a member of " Con"gress, by definition a low life.
The bottom line with the Liberals on this Page. is its a WOMAN suing a Democrat Male........... That Bitch must be lying. no way she could be telling the Truth. The only time a woman is telling the Truth is when the Accusation is agaisnt a Republican.
Did i get it right? All one has to do is look at Bevs First comment on the board.
Beverly in Chicago
What is her personal agenda; I wonder? With his checkered background it is going to be his disadvantage.
Perhaps her personal Agenda is that she Was Sexually harassed........
Stevie Baby - take two Midol and come back in the morning will ya?
You ARE a BLITHERING idiot in the first degree!
Put down the Cheeto's, come out of Mommy's basement and join humanity will ya?
Yawn Nasty.
I can take your Personal Attacks against me. They roll like water off my Shoulders because They are not True. They dont hurt my Feelings and they really dont bother me. However it does show everyone including the Host here at FR what a Pathetic simple minded human you are. All you can do is throw insults...... Yawn...
Are you saying it's okay for two people to cheat, as long as they consent to cheat?
Ergo, that must be little bobby's new 'big' word.
You seem to have trouble separating the two examples and want to lump them altogether. Perhaps I can explain it to you
Sen Ensign was guilty, he admitted he did cheat on his wife, with the wife of a staff member. He was a big proponent of "Family Values" He lied and he cheated, very strange Values of any kind. the hypocrisy of the gop/tp is they say one thing and do something else.
Rep. Hastings has been accused, that is it, so far...............when and if a guilty verdict comes down, feel free, little bobby, to jump all of over it, I might even join you. There is a huge difference between the two cases but you dont want to see that.
Now run along before you really get in over your head.
Jody (post 2.3) - sorry your argument makes no sense. You are trying to validate it by implying that a majority of republicans are...
It is all well and good that you specifically name names, but you also need to provide reasonable time lines with the "holier than thou" statements and the politicians wrong doing. After all this is still America and people can and do change.
I do find it interesting that you choose to condone many of your fellow FR liberal posters for posts that come off as "holier than thou" rhetoric (with the word holier not referring to religious ferver). After all, we all know that language has consequences, or perhaps it is because they are not engaging in infidelity as they post.
Steve,
You mean like this one:
Smile for the camera Steve.
I'm not saying it's okay, its just not something I care about. Yes, the cheaters' families are harmed, and that is sad, but that is between them and their families. If one of the cheaters is an elected lawmaker then that reflects poorly on them and I may not vote for them next time around, but that depends on who my other choice is. I may vote for them. It is a character flaw but not one that I think will necessarily impede their ability to make laws. Now, if they had been preaching family values and engaged in cheating, I would feel that their is an element of hypocrisy and dishonesty that would make me feel that they can't be trusted. Of course, as a social liberal, I probably wouldn't have voted for them in the first place. The bottom line for me is that cheating is forgivable whereas persisting with unwanted sexual advances and then retaliating is not.
I thought it would be obvious, but I find that argument incredible. If a member of Congress engages in sexual harrassment, it is not a "personal matter". If true, this isn't just another employer/employee matter. This is a Congressman. Really. Can you get past your own politics for just one moment?
Guess we'll just wait to see what happens but at least he's not in office any longer.
Jody, dear, I dont suppose you actually read the article by chance?
I know, what's the point. Seems like there may be a few other actual stories out there today? Naaawwww.
Spanky, darling, sweetie pie, I "misspoke", I meant to say that the aide was not longer in the office but as you can see, I didn't. Thanks, dear, for pointing out my mistake.
Hey Jody - I here to help.
Also, I don't think aides are "in office." But far be it from me to call out anyone's wording, syntax, or especially grammar or spelling. :)
Note my correction above: In "the office", Spanks. Hate to admit that I was in a hurry and did not read my original comment but it's true whether you care to believe me is unimportant. You see, Spankster, this liberal admits that she messed up her comment--haste makes waste. Have a nice evening.
x
Allegations are just that and have no merit until proven.
Unless we're talking about 9/11. Then we just refuse to prove anything.
A real life truther. Congrats, Paul, glad to have you here. Truthers make birthers look like geniuses...
Take your meds and tell us all about nano-thermite , it is fascinating.
I put them both at the same level. I find that they are the ying and the yang of the crazies in the world. Two groups of people at either end of the political spectum with equal and opposite delusions maintaining a delicate balance of insanity that holds the universe in place.
TRUTHERS are only asking that the investigation into 9/11 have the power to compel testimony under oath and charge people with perjury for not telling the "whole truth and nothing but the truth". Why would any right thinking American be opposed to knowing the "truth" based on PROOF provided by a subpoena empowered security clearanced investigative panel or court?
I'd say an allegation by your own aide of sexual misconduct is not to be dismissed as "without merit". Yes, it's to be proved, but there's a reason this is news.
I wonder how much different the above remarks would be if he had a (R) after his name.
Liberals are transparently phony about their alleged principles....minutes after lambasting and attacking Sen Ensign, under investigation but not found guilty of ethics violations,
liberals now are tame as lambs because their Rep Hastings only has 'allegations' against him...
No change in my point of view. How did this pos ever get elected? Convicted of bribery as a judge (by the Senate) and thrown off the bench. I guess he can't get honest work.
bob- you will stop this right now, mister. There is a profound difference between these tow men. Enssign has an R after his name, Alcee has a D.
See, not even remotely the same.
John in tucson - 62 comments as of 9:17 AM tuesday vs how many for (R)'s on other FR blogs.? You do realize that that this is a FR political site for liberal wing nuts, right? You should see the number of posts if FR mentions the name palin!
Please do come back to visit, outside observations are welcome, but not necessarily accepted by many of the posters here.
That's a ridiculous statement. I'm a Democrat and this needs to be taken seriously. This has nothing to do with his political party.
Perhaps they should give Hastings a membership card to the repiglican party.
Connies are so transparently funny about their alleged principles. The party of "family values" would cheerfully sell orphans for medical experiments if they could do it for a nickel.
Ask Ensign, Abramoff, Foley, Cunningham, Lay, DeLay, Bush (any of em'), Craig, Stevens, etc....about the values of the republic party. They'll tell you.
Clinton?
Steve, Clinton wasn't a Republican. Just FYI.
Brent..
I am totally aware of that. But amazing how one Impeached Democrat can totally overshadow all of Gregs List. Dont you agree..
But does Nixon's impeachment and removal from office count or not. Just wondering how the scoring thing is being kept.
Brent.
You show your IGNORANCE. Nixon wasnt Impeached. but nice try.
girls, girls girls - neither was clinton. Doncha know clinton didn't know that a BJ was sex?
@american: President Clinton was impeached, just never convicted. President Nixon left office, knowing he would be impeached and convicted. No President has ever been convicted and removed from office.
No Clinton was not impeached. The House of Reps voted impeachment, but the Senate did not. (remember, it would take both.)
Technically, Clinton was 'impeached' by the house, and/ but not 'convicted' by the Senate. Impeachment is the process, much like arraignment.
Ever notice how the Connies on this board start throwing personal attacks and inject grammatical corrections into the thread the moment they wish to derail the discussion? They call you "dear", etc...
Sort of camouflages a weak ideology doesn't it?
How did the national focus become labor Unions instead of "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs" all of a sudden? Repubs managed to pull that one off pretty neatly I must say. Well done. Funny. It was their mantra in November. Why the sudden change?

sobadtoo, tasteless, but funny...LOL!
It will be interesting to see how this pans out. The fact that most of these actions occurred in Europe, yet they are filing the suit in Florida. The article didn't mention just exactly where these said actions actually took place, since jurisdiction could end up being an issue here. We just won't know until more information comes forth.
wait a minute guys he must have done it she said so! And to top it off a rightwing group has come to her rescue! So why should anyone doubt the motives of the lawsuit? Mr. Ensign has affair ....ok so what.....pays off the husband to be quiet....ok so what! Leftwing group to the rescue of the victim?..........I think not.......
Lordy, lordy, lordy ... don't you all just LOVE high-level intellectual discussion? Altogether the funniest thread I think I've EVER read here. Thank you all for a special late-night treat. <3
Hi Anna, I usually miss most of the real discussions since I don't get on-line until late. Glad to see you doing some late night surfing. You're welcome for the treat.
LOL,,,,,,,,,,At almost 80 this Republican aide better have some "hard" evidence
I wonder if Hastings comment about "Personal Agendas" is an intentional reference to the "novel" that Packer wrote about a female emplyee being harassed by a congressman:
From the DailyMail in the UK version of this story:
"Last year Ms Packer wrote a novel called A Personal Agenda which also discussed issues of sexual harassment on Capitol Hill.
A review in Jamaicanliterature.com said of the book: 'Inspired by her own experiences, Packer uses A Personal Agenda to recall the alienation, hostility and impropriety she experienced as a newcomer to Capitol Hill.
'The book seeks to provoke its readers by examining racial tensions, corruption and sexual harassment in Congress, as well as the impact of immigration to the U.S. and other nations.'"

From the sound of things, we accuse idiot government representatives of being a-moral yet they feel they are justified in passing judgment on others. Remember Newt. He went after Clinton for his a-moral conduct and did everything he could to impeach Clinton. However, all the time Newt spent condemning Clinton, he was in another room doing the same thing. True hypocrisy at it finest.
There is so much yapping and pointing fingers at our nations finest. They spend their lives with their hands in the cookie jar. They are above the mere mortals they govern.
If they weren't in the news, this matter would insignificant. How many people cheat on their spouses? I don't think these two are the only ones. We are not in a position to sit in judgment of these two clowns. Someone posted earlier that they are adults. Was it consensual? Who knows. I guess the courts are assigned the task of deciding the issue.
Rather than pointing to these individuals, we should continue to let our hypocritical leaders know that they are definitely not the ones who can shame others for similar actions.
He could be guilty of the accusations, or not. She could be within her rights to expose a sexual deviate and hold him accountable. Right now it's he said, she said. Perhaps he did absolutely nothing and she is trying to sell her book? No one is this country needs to write a book about the corruption or sexual harassment in this country. We already know.
No worries. He's a Democrat. Don't waste your time in court. He'll get a slap on the hand because he slapped her on the ass, they'll blame it on a Republican, and everyone will move on.org.
Once again SPANKY ignorance will out..... The checks paid by the parents of the (R) exist that is called proof. All that exists with Hastings is allegations. If the proof comes out Democrats will condemn him and say he needs to pay the price. Name me a Republicant who has been proven and there are many then condemned by his peers.
