Huckabee on Obama, The Other, Part II

Yesterday, we wrote about Mike Huckabee claiming falsely on a conservative talk-radio show that President Obama grew up in Kenya. (A Huckabee spokesman later said the former Arkansas governor, considering a 2012 White House bid, "misspoke.")

Today, Huckabee, on a nationwide book tour, invoked madrassas in reference to President Obama, but not because he's saying he's a Muslim.

Per Political Wire, Huckabee said: "And I have said many times, publicly, that I do think he has a different worldview and I think it is, in part, molded out of a very different experience. Most of us grew up going to Boy Scout meetings and, you know, our communities were filled with Rotary Clubs, not madrassas." He adds, “I’ve never said he’s a Muslim.” (The video is below. The quote appears at about 5:15.)

Conspiracy theorists on the right believe President Obama is a Muslim. He is not. He is a Christian.

Huckabee was also asked whether the amount of money he's made in the past two years will factor into his decision to run for president.

"The decision I make is not going to be based on my own personal finances," Huckabee said, adding, "That's not going to be the factor that gets me in or out."

Huckabee had said last week, per Roll Call: “If I run, I walk away from a pretty good income. I don’t want to walk away any sooner than I have to because frankly, I don’t have a lot of reserve built up. Most of my life was in public service. Therefore I didn’t come away wealthy. In order to run for president last time, I cashed in my life insurance, my annuities, I pretty much went through everything that I ever had as an asset that I thought I might someday live on. One thing I committed to myself, to my wife and God, was that if I do this I’m hopefully going to be in a position that I’m not so completely destitute at the end of it, that I have no idea what to do if I get sick."

He was also asked about Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum having their Fox contracts suspended because of their overtures at possible runs for the White House. Huckabee hosts a show on Fox.

"Well, if I see Fox News pop up on my phone ID, maybe I shouldn't answer it, I don't know," Huckabee joked. He added, "It's one of the reasons I'm not in a big hurry to go out and make an announcement."

no joe... here's Mark Murray's thorough piece on today's poll. As you can see, he led with the issues. And here's the paragraph on Obama's approval drop:

President Obama’s job-approval rating in the poll sits at 48 percent, which is down five points since last month. “If you leave out [the Tucson shootings], the president’s job rating is where it was for most of 2010 — not terrible, not great,” said Hart, the Democratic pollster.

What's this obsession about polls? Did you look at RCP?

The biggest disparity is in Fox-Mussen at -8 kinda like you negative; lady ? Relax, the world is not coming to an end just because of some numbers.

You can believe despite all the negativity the President's approval rating after 2 years is still better than your beloved Bush.

    #2.10 - Thu Mar 3, 2011 6:41 AM EST

Misspoke became an acceptable excuse from the point at which the American people decided politicians (from either party) could be held to a lower standard of behavior than non-politicians. It's prevalent on both sides of the aisle, and while Huckabee is but the latest example, I have no doubt that there will be many more examples prior to the next election cycle. If any of them had an ounce of courage, or was willing to be seen as less than perfect, the correct answer is "I made a mistake", simple, to the point, and clear. Unfortunately, they (none of them) have the courage to admit a mistake, that would be held against them during their next (seemingly current at all times) campaign.

The Right wing-nuts know damn well what they are doing - making sure that some people believe that President Obama is "not one of us." He is "the other." He is "unAmerican."

They want to put doubt and fear into the minds of those who can't think, choose not to think, and those who are told what to think. If they can deligitimize Obama enough, people will accept that he is not the legal President. In code, they are also insinuating that being "black" means he should not be president.

No other President in history has had to deal with this kind of scum. Partisanship aside, how do you think citizens of other countries think of America and Americans? Whether you are Democrat, Republican, Independent or Other, can't you see that this sort of shannigans makes this country look hypocritical? When elected officials cannot respect the presidency, we have a huge problem in this country.

Why is educating oneself so difficult? The nonsense posted here, the calling of names, makes me wonder whether or not we need to give a civics test and an IQ test before allowing one to vote.

    Living in LA -

I'm not so sure that "I made a mistake" is all that much better than "I misspoke". The person speaking in either case would probably never have used either defense if they weren't caught by the media or by someone on the other side and had to backtrack. If no one called them out on their statements, they'd keep right on making them - deliberately - over and over. To me, the correct response if they had that ounce of courage you mention would be "You know what? You're right and I was wrong. I knew it was wrong when I said it, but I took a chance that I could get more mileage out of it with my base than I would lose by offending the other side's base or those in the middle. In the future I should either stand by my beliefs or not open my mouth in the first place".

But no, I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to ever happen.....

    Hi Joanne,

I'm good with whatever acknowledgement is appropriate. I'm not as certain that it's always deliberate as you seem to be, but taking responsibility for your own "mistakes", "misspeaking", or outright lies, really ought to be mandatory in a politician, no excuses, step up and acknowledge the issue, and correct it as soon as possible. I'm a beancounter, when I make a mistake, I acknowledge it, and inform the affected parties just as soon as it becomes known to me. Politicians shouldn't get a free pass regardless of party, it's not a party issue, it's an issue of public trust, and responsibility. If a poltician won't accept responsibility for his or her actions, then they don't deserve the authority derived from their elected (I hope) positions.

Agree wholeheartedly that it's an issue of public trust and responsibility - and always find it amusing when politicians avoid the responsibility part and then wonder where the public trust went.

My Dear Reverand Huckabee has brought about a situation where I fear for his very soul. As a Rev. myself I would welcome the opportunity to counsel The Reverand as he has obviously lost his way. It is a sad thing to see this happen even though our faith varies somewhat in it's concepts. That his lie was deliberate is pointed out by his follow up during that interview which is mostly being repeated out of context. The Reverand is an educated man. He knows that the Brits were indeed involved in colonizing Kenya not Indonesia and he most assuredly knows the MauMaus were also Kenyan in origin. As for the bust the Reverand says was returned ok perhaps a slip but now it is well known and public knowledge the bust is in the residence having been replaced by Abraham Lincoln. Abe Lincoln a Republican by the way. Having a subordinate attempt a gross confabulation on his behalf may clear the Rev in some eyes of this world. He is a man of the cloth and after bearing false witness he has compunded the whole thing by allowing a lie to his benefit by another to not only stand but he now defends that lie as well. I am ashamed to say Mr Huckabee is a minister who uses the title Reverand when it suits him and abandons the teachings of Our Lord when that suits him. I sincerely hope someone of his church calls him on this immediately and that he does what we have been taught to do and make full and complete heartfelt amends in order to restore honor to the Baptist Church and himself. Mistakes are one thing Reverand, intent is another.

There is a certain segment of our population who see President Obama as "different". Why is so much effort being spent looking at our current president's life as different? What does Huckabee want? What is he comfortable with? A sell out for corporations, a sell out to working people, a sell out to good public educations? A conformist? That's what this sounds like lately from Huckabee. And from what I'm gathering from his statements, he is saying that if you don't fit into one of those categories, then you mustn't be a "real" American.

Huckabee is truly living in the wrong century. The world is passing him by. He's stuck somewhere in the 1950's, early 1960's like so many of his age.

We should be proud at how far we as a country have come.

It kind of reminds me of what it must have been like for those great actors of the 1930's and '40's who woke up one day and saw Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando making a huge impact on the younger generation. Or perhaps what it was like for our grandparents when they turned on the radio one day and heard -

Well it's one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready now go cat go.

Things change. Cultures change. Progress has a way of doing that. If you're a conservative, then fight on those principals. (Principals I don't understand any longer). But for goodness sakes, stop trying to find some mystery behind President Obama. He is one of us. Just a few generations ahead of Huckabee's thinking.

I read this book many many years ago called You Must Remember This. And it was interviews with children whose fathers had come here from Eastern Europe, who had settled in the Lower East Side in the early part of the 20th Century. These kids were ashamed of their fathers for a bit, because their fathers talked like Eastern Europeans, dressed like Eastern Europeans and couldn't get used to America's cultures and ways. They were locked into their old fashioned ways.

It took their children to show them what America was, which was a land of diversity and progress and always moving forward. Especially in New York City. The Lower East Side was the beginning of all this.

And America should be proud. For some older white people, they can't understand what has happened. They weren't paying attention. They were too immersed in their own little sheltered world. I see it on tv all the time with pundits and hosts. I can hear it.

And so it is once again the young people who are showing them what America can finally be. Stop catering to the tea partiers. Progress just isn't their thing. Life is passing them by as well.

I don't know Huckabee's age. But he's a baby boomer. These changes were happening during his lifetime. Why is it he can't accept it? My grandfather was from Italy. Other grandparents were from Russia and Poland and Ireland and South America and Australia and Germany, who came here for a better life for their children. President Obama's father was from Kenya, who traveled here to get a good education.

President Obama grew up without a father. That is sad for any child, especially I would think for a little boy. But he worked hard and it paid off. Why can't more people appreciate that?

President Barack Hussein Obama. I sometimes still have to sit back and say to myself - wow.

There is a certain segment of our population who see President Obama as "different". Why is so much effort being spent looking at our current president's life as different?

I think it's a symptom of a larger problem. There is a huge segment of our population that do not look any further that win vs. lose or success vs. failure, thus their outright bigotry (Ex. look at the huge viewership of Idol, DWTS, Survivor, etc.) Everything slides "easily" into one slot or the other without any critical thought. As well, this is the easiest group to sway via clever marketing.

Unless we lift ourselves out of this hole - via education - it won't change.

I was told as a young girl in Vermont, "if you're not a liberal they'll revoke your birth certificate". Guess that scared me straight to "flaming" !!

NBC / FR – This is your news headline set for the day?

        Huckabee on Obama?

        Bachmann’s bridge: A double standard.

Barbour claims Obama wants gas prices to go up

        Boehner won’t commit.

Really? Every single article a negative headline aimed at one party and you guys call your self a news organization. “The first place for key political news and analysis from the NBC News Political Unit.”

Surely you guys can do better than this.

Smells like raw meat for the regulars that post often. Too often. Perhaps that is the whole point. Please tell me I am wrong and that you may from time to time actually provide some less partisan and more centrist analysis.

They did a public service. They pointed out that Huckabee is a hypocrite. They just didn't put that in their headline. To Huckabee: you are a hypocrite. Your Jesus said to give away your belongings and follow him. You are saying you are reluctant to follow him (run for office) unless you can afford it.

Huckabee: "One thing I committed to myself, to my wife and God, was that if I do this I’m hopefully going to be in a position that I’m not so completely destitute at the end of it, that I have no idea what to do if I get sick."

The Independent: If I had to guess, I would guess that Mark & Domenico are conservatives. I have no way of knowing this of course, but it it is what I have always assumed. Having said that as a Democrat, I still came back here day after day, especially during the 2008 presidential election. Why? Because they didn't cater to anybody.

I have seen them through the years be nothing but fair and professional. They have continually done their research and have struck down stories that were false, despite what the rest of the media was reporting.

They are young, yet very mature and good at what they do. Sometimes I don't agree with their reporting. But more important than that, I always know they don't have an agenda. They're just attempting to report the facts. This is very clear if you read them daily.

Huckabee is going too far and that's a story. Just like the rest of those who may be running for President. Their words and actions matter. For both parties.

So for me, it doesn't matter if they are D or I or R. It just doesn't matter. What does matter is their professionalism and obvious hard work they put into their writing here. And they give us much room to express whatever it is you or I want to express.

        The Independent-

That's what makes MSNBC/NBC "fair and balanced". They give both points of view. Watch MSNBC in the morning you'd think it was right wing talk radio.

I'm not pandering either; it's just how I see it.

Also sometimes the threads they put up will make you think it too. Believe me, it's not always wine and roses over here. Go through the archives you'll be surprised.

Do not get to watch much TV until the evenings I have no slant on that topic. And when I do watch TV, I prefer Discovery, sports events and local news. To get the US news, global news, economic news and political news I prefer reading articles such as this on the web. That is why I have taken the time to actually post. I usually do not do too much of that. Perhaps my feedback will be heard because it does not appear to be anywhere close to objective.

        Bev & Pat

You two post here very often and I take issue with great deal of the tenor and vitriol of your commentary. I may agree or disagree with a position you take on political issues, but often your view is drown out by the rhetoric that comes along with it. You may be right about the personal politics of the authors of many of the articles, but from my viewpoint there is a regular and clear bias. The resulting commentary is often worth the price of admission. One can always count on 10-20 regulars, yourselves included that snark back and forth on each and every issue, no matter how mundane.

          Independent,

You called it. Every article is slanted to the left. This appeals to the ignorant libbies who are forever on the vine with nothing tangible to contribute.....ever.

Frankly I don't really care who runs against Obama from the Republican side. The Democrats would be better served if they nominated someone other than Obama.

He can't run on his record obviously. He can only resort to smear and attack ads. The voting public, those with more than a liberal's bumper-sticker mentality, has learned to see through these type of campaign ads, and they have the potential to backfire on their author.

Once their campaign goes south, there is no more time or money to turn it around.

just like all the other republicans we saw early on in this presidents term, Huckabee is pandering to the birthers and teapartiers who he wants their votes. Are we surprised by this action when our own speaker of the house Boehner did the same thing some weeks back? Boehner said "it's not his responsibility" to tell the American people what to think? wow Boehner, and your 'e third in line under the President. So just like him, all these repubs are afraid of their minority fringe and would rather guarantee their votes then to grow a spine and do what is correct....have some pride and speak the truth!!

Huckabee, do you think we see you now as POTUS material....i think not!!!

Huckabee and many Tea Party advocates evoke the "other" image ----- that Obama is a THEMMM. That is a characteristic of eliminationism which was also large partt of another movement back in the 1930's. It was called Nazism.

Again, Huckabee did not expressly "claim" Obama grew up in Kenya. He said it in passing.

Was the headline awhile back, "Obama claims there are 57 states" ? No, he made an error.

I know the unionized teachers spend most of their school day singing the praises of the Dear Leader, but believe it or not, mistakes can still be made about his life.

The mistake really didnt make much difference, except to state run media MSNBC.

MSNBC is spinning Left, as usual. Other stories spin left today, bashing Bachman, Barbour, Boehner.....keep it up, maybe you can get direct government funding like PBS...

Bob, he said "Kenya" at least 3 times, linked it to the "Mau Mau Rebellion" that occurred in Kenya, and referred specifically to Britain, of which Kenya is a former colony.

Reverend Huckabee knew exactly what he was doing...he was lying.

Two thoughts on a couple of Huckleberry's comments:

"Most of my life was in public service. Therefore I didn't come away wealthy....."

Huck, you should of moved to Texas and run for Governor-for-Life like our Good-Hair/No Brains "W" clone.  He's spent his life in public service and managed to sell enough of our state to the highest bidder that now he's a multi-millionaire and lives in a $10K per month hill-top public-housing mansion.

"......if I do this I'm hopefully going to be in a position that I'm not so completely destitute at the end of it, that I have no idea what to do if I get sick."

Huck, if you are truly a Christian, you should admit that supporting universal health-care for the poor, the children, the elderly, etc. is the Christian thing to do.  So, why do you instead seek the support of the money-changers and their attempts to harm the less-fortunate in our society?  Oh, that's right....God helps those who help themselves.  Well, the top 2% are helping themselves to more wealth than the bottom  50% combined.  I bet that's a plan Jesus will appreciate when he comes back.  Looks like it's going to be no rapture for you, Huck!

Theologian Cornel West has said that there are always 2 churches--one that supports and works on behalf of the privileged, another that supports and works on behalf of everyone else. They're always jockeying for position and at different times one or the other is more prominent. It isn't hard to figure out which side Huck is on.
