Barbour claims Obama admin wants gas prices to go up

AP

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour departs the National Governors Association winter meeting in Washington on Sunday.

From NBC’s Catherine Chomiak
Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MS) today alleged the Obama administration wants gas prices to go up in order to make alternative sources of fuel more competitive and to reduce pollution.

"I tell ya, in 2008, $4 gasoline brought my state to its knees before Wall Street melted down,” Barbour said, “and we've blown through $3 a gallon on our way to $4, and it reminds me of what the Secretary of Energy said in 2008, Secretary [Steven] Chu, then Dr. Chu, said what we really need in the United States to get the cost of gasoline up to where it is in Europe $8 or $9 a gallon. We don't need that where I am.”

He added, “This administration's policies have been designed to drive up the cost of energy in the name of reducing pollution, in the name of making very expensive alternative fuels more economically competitive."

Chu told the Wall Street Journal in 2008 that "somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe."

He has since backed away from the statement and hasn’t advocated that position as a member of the administration.

Here's the New York Times from January 2009: "Steven Chu, the Nobel laureate scientist who is President-elect Obama’s choice to be energy secretary, said in testimony prepared for his Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday that high oil prices were a threat to the economy, backing away slightly from statements made in his last job, as director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, that gasoline prices should be higher."

And in the Wall Street Journal article, in the paragraph following Chu’s quote, was this: “But Mr. Obama has dismissed the idea of boosting the federal gasoline tax, a move energy experts say could be the single most effective step to promote alternative energies and temper demand. Mr. Obama said Sunday that a heightened gas tax would be a ‘mistake’ because it would put "additional burdens on American families right now."

While speaking at the Chamber of Commerce this morning, Barbour also hit the administration on jobs which he contended hasn't been its focus.

“When this presidential administration came in to office,” he said, “clearly, the main thing on the American people's mind was job creation, and they expected our government -- from top to bottom -- to be focused on job creation. Yet, Congress spent 15 months on the health care reform bill.”

Barbour, a potential Republican candidate for president in 2012, weighed in on another probable candidate. When asked about Newt Gingrich's recent moves closer to a presidential bid, Barbour exclaimed, "I'm crazy about Newt.  We've been friends for 30 years."

Barbour was also asked about his fellow Republican governor, Scott Walker of Wisconsin, and was supportive of his recent budget moves.

So then riddle me this: what did Obama mean when he said our energy prices "would necessarily skyrocket?"

You are aware that 1. gas is energy, 2. the greenie's want gas to go up so their unicorn and fairy dust replacements might be remotely competitive, and 3. the higher the gas, the more shiny trains and reliance on mass transit, the more government has control?

So how about it Barb.H, do tell, why does it sound like BS to you?

Tha's right Barb. See Drive By is just flat out incapable.

Notice he very rarely responds, and when he does he just calls me names. Yesterday it was Ass-Wipe, or something which demonstrates not only his intellectual ability, but also his maturity level.

You see Barb spouting a conclusion is easy. Anyone, including Drive By, Bev. and Feisty can do that. But there is no substance. They know it, which is why Feisty always goes to personal insults, Bev. to cut and pasting, and now Drive By just runs away.

So you can be like him and run away or you can stand and state your position. Your choice.

Too bad Drive, but I am glad to see you recognize your weaknesses.

Spanky... in your world, Obama's trying to destroy America... did I get that correct??

And you absolutely abhor alternative forms of energy right???

Good luck though....hopefully alternative energy will garner some steam and become fruition in the near future.... not for your sake, but for the sake of bio-availability and the relieving the planet of our ever-polluting dirty energy (oil).

OK Spanky, i'll bite. I think it's BS because even at the height of gas prices in 2008, consumption never actually fell dramatically. We are ADDICTED to oil.

Answer this question. When do we start to promote renewable energy? Before or after FINITE natural resources expire?

And this is mighty convenient from a "potential" presidential candidate, wouldn't you agree?

Yea right Obama wants gas to go up!!! Just like all you Republicans to come up with some reason.

Then why do the Republicans in TEXAS uncap all of them wells only when it hits about $100.00 per brl. for

crude. Did Obama win that state?

I will never believe any Republican when they add more to the deficit in other areas, oh but those areas create jobs. LOL

Being a Veteran I never believe in leaving people behind, however my Republican brother says we have to let the chaf drown if the rest of us want to survive and that my folks is how the GOP sees it!!!

What's interesting with gas prices spiking is the media hardly questions the President about it, and the White House doesn't have answers for the questions the media do ask. From the 2011-03-01 White House briefing:

Q In the morning show interviews this morning, in one of them, Ambassador Rice mentioned contacts with countries that have -- I'm trying to think of the exact -- oil capacity, excess oil capacity. What can you tell us about that in terms of trying to relieve the price pressure, assure the supply and so forth?

MR. CARNEY: Well, I'll just say, first of all, that we are very conscious of the fact that a rise in gas prices has a direct effect on American and their wallets. And we're very conscious of that and we're monitoring that very closely. We also believe that the international -- the global system has the capacity to deal with a major disruption. And we have, I think I said in a previous briefing, been in discussions with the IEA and others about how you deal with disruptions. We do believe that we can -- we're just monitoring this situation very carefully.

"Monitoring that very closely." Carney said it twice in his one response. That seems to be all Obama does, he just monitors things. Kind of like him voting "Present". Intentions matter, not results.

And as for the media, that's it for the questions, nothing else. That's the entire conversation the media has about gas prices with the Obama administration.

Obama's not trying to destroy American, that's just the unfortunate effect of his policies.

Drive By I do love cookies. Too bad your afraid to debate/discuss. I get it, it must be very hard, given your positions. But really, do you have to resort to calling people names? Low even for you.

So how about those alternative energies? Been hearing about them for a long time. But alas they all suck. Don't believe me go pick up a copy of this month's Consumer Reports - the Volts sucks. I know you want green tech. I know you truly believe the world is warming because of us, but you all have simply lost the arguement, at least for now. I know, I know - hottest year EVAH!

Unless you got some fairy dust I can put in the tank to get me home?

The libs told us it was the presidents fault last time gas prices reached unacceptable levels and called for his removal from office. Based on their precedence and wisdom, I expect the libs should be starting to chant "impeach Obama" right around $3.743 per gallon.

Bush was wrong about a lot of things (there's no point in listing them).... which is why people wanted him out of office... the only thing repubs had on Clinton was that he had an extra marital affair... and as for Obama... they want him out of office because they think he's an Alien (oops, I mean Kenyan, oopps I mean indonesian, I mean Hawaiian cos it's not part of the US).

We deserve 5, 6, 7, 8 dollars per gallon gas prices, maybe even higher.

I remember the gas lines of the 70's and how Americans were fed up and called for the end of our dependence on oil and in particular the Middle East. We have done nothing since, we deserve the prices to skyrocket!

yes us libs did say that, but what missing from your post is why gas went up. gas went up because former president Bush invaded a oil producing country for no dam good reason other than the leader of this country put out a hit on his father. then he as a x-oil man increased our reserves but refused to release it. the US military is the biggest consumer of oil in our nation. where were you when gas went up from last 2004 through the end of 2006. gas peaked at 4.30 a gallon in early september of 2006. everytime there are problems in the middle east gas goes up.

What the president is doing is all he can, do you not want Libya to be free of there leader, do you want demorecy in the middle east, do you want the president to invade Libya to reduce the price of gas? do you want him to reopen deep water drilling that almost caused the gulf to be a toxic waste dump ? or do you want him to help keep the Libyan leader in to keep gas down? which one do you want ?

What i miss are the days when the CIA would find a way to kill guys like the libyan leader.

So instead of crying about gas, go buy a electic car!!! if we all had them we would not give 2 craps about libya!!!!!

Joanna i guess that peskie Poll on First thought ran you away again.

@ Steve, are you an idiot? The economy is nearing the "tank" now, with $8/gal gas, you will see food costs triple at least, and all other items having oil as a component will also increase to the point that people won't buy. Without buying (spending) the manufacturers lay off. And, the government doesn't get its taxes, so they increase to see that revenue.

Yep, the Dude-in-Chief (John Stewart, that news anchor the libbie news media runs to according to a libbie poster on the site) will assure himself of reelection.

and to call me a fraud where did that come from, I was just stating the truth, like it or not. the people in Iraq under saddam were opressed, but when we got rid of him, why did more of our troops get killed after combate operations were over if they wanted such democracy. your the fraud, it should not have been up to the United states to get rid of him, that should have been up to his own people like in Libya, George herbert Walker Bush said that after leaving office.

Interesting observation about my friend Spanks, Feisty: Seems he's more comfortable with his money going to support terrorist regimes that vow our destruction, than to help out fellow citizens that might be in need.

Nice guy, huh? (Ooops- Now I'M asking quesitons- sorr-eee)

          #2.9 - Wed Mar 2, 2011 5:05 PM EST

But there is the rub, Salt. So many people I know cannot afford to take the old RV out right now. The desert was deserted all season. Bad for RV shops, motorcycle dealers, and all the others that depend on Rving, and in this case dirtbikes and quads.

And now its almost river season. Same issue, but with boats. Lake Havasu, like Elkhart(?) relies on gas based technology - there it is boats. All, or nearly all the manufacturers closed in the last two years. and the town as a whole relies so heavily on the tourists - snow birds in the winter, boaters in summer. The town cannot take gas at $4.00

So while I like safe bridges and all, be nice for the overall economy to have some traffic.

But, hey nice one Feisty, kind of makes my point about you and the 2nd grade, right?

U.S. authorities approved a request by Houston's Noble Energy to resume work on the Santiago well in the gulf. While Noble Energy operates the well, the biggest stake in the project, 46.5 percent, is held by non-operating partner BP, the Financial Times newspaper reports.

This ought to help right Spanky?

Too funny; isn't this because Gov. Walker boarded up the windows of the peoples House; another violation?

BTW, I wonder does his dumb@aa know boarding windows is a fire hazard?

Oh, Pat: I LOVE that musical. I saw it at a little gem of an outdoor theater that serves the area's young people. Trollwood Performing Arts School is the name of it. When the ghosts were marching, there was lightning in the distance. I still remember the feeling watching that, and the very talented young people in the cast.

                  Pat -

I'll bet I've seen that 10th Anniversary concert a couple dozen times and never fail to get goosebumps and/or cry at the end. As an old high school and community chorus second alto, I'd have given anything to just be in the far end of the back row singing along.

I actually did sing along the third time I saw the show in person - I was in the middle of the fourth row,and the guy playing Valjean noticed and winked at me!

Not sure the Wisconsin group is quite ready for Broadway, but you've got to admire their spirit!

"Will you join in our crusade?

Who will be strong and stand with me?

Somewhere beyond the barricades is there a world you long to see?"

                  Wikipedia:

The book was a great commercial success. The shortest correspondence in history is between Hugo and his publisher Hurst & Blackett in 1862. It is said Hugo was on vacation when Les Misérables (which is over 1200 pages) was published. He telegraphed the single-character message "?" to his publisher, who replied with a single "!". First translated into foreign languages (including Italian, Greek, and Portuguese) the same year it originally appeared, it proved popular not only in France, but across Europe. It has been a popular book ever since it was published, and was a great favourite among the Confederate soldiers of the American Civil War, who occasionally called themselves "Lee's Miserables" (a reference to their deteriorating conditions under General Robert E. Lee). Its popularity continues to this day, and many view it as one of the most important novels ever written.

                  ___________

There isn't a whole lot of perfection out there - Les Miserables is. I'm always advising people that if there is one thing they should do on this planet, it is read this book, see the movie (the first one with Charles Laugthon and Frederic March) and then see the musical. This book I always thought was a gift to us all written by the perfect writer, Victor Hugo.

How appropriate that the people of Wisconsin sing this, of all songs.

Yeh Mr Barbour I'm sure thats right. Fact of the matter is that the administration got the Saudi's to guarantee to make up the Libyan shortfall. Guess nobody told you about the Oil speculators that are once again taking advantage of the situation. Can you say 40,000,000,000 a quarter profit for Exxon again?

This Administration will do anything in it's power to drain every last dime out of every person in this country to get control of the masses. No politician out there can see what high fuel cost will do to the average American. Don't tell me people are making money from fuel costing more because they invest in oil through their 401K. That"s bull, the stock market is down, very few are making money off their investments. I feel that crude has to be taken off the commodities market and just bought straight from the supplier. Speculation is driving up the price, not lack of product.

My Grandma was born in 1907..She died last month...I asked her on several occassions about the industrial revolution. I have a picture of her in a ford model t...with a flapper outfit on....

She said people were against the automobile, that there were no gas stations back then and nobody understood how people would feed the car. A horse you could bring food for.

Also the street lights were gas and they didn't have highways...horses were good on grass and fields.

Well back in 1925 there were a lot of Hailey's saying the gas powered car was no good

I think the year the first gas pump was installed in 1905 2nd in 1907

1911....the idea of the gas car was a pipe dream

2011 the idea of the electric car...Hmmm you tell me..how you think the story is going to end ?

The picture I have of grannie is from 1925 in her fancy car...

Cars were fiddled with in the late 1800's for the record they say 1893. so it took about 32 years till people were using cars and it wasn't the old people it was the youngsters and the rich elite who had the 1st cars.

My grannie told me 5 years ago "honey, 30 years from now the gas car will be like the horse and buggy."

"gas is just too damn expensive"..Then she called the gas companies "a bunch of jackassess"

She was 97 when she made that prediction. so that was 2006....hmmmm so lets look too 2036...

....LOL....Grannie was a tough old bird God rest her soul...LOL

Barbour said that in 2008 $4.00 per gallon brought his state to its knees.

Well Texas was doing great and I made a lot of money that year. It is very sad to have so much Conviction and no compassion for others. I asked one of the old timers about the parties GOP vs DFL and they indicated that the Dems. didn't care for them in the 80's oil crash so why should they care for them now. Talk about harboring a bitter resentment.

I will determine if I make fun of you or poke you. All of your childish prodding has little influence on so many on here yet you continue that tactic you learned in High School when you had girls beating you up. I am sorry you were abused as a child. I am sorry your mother just stood by and did not help you and I am ever so sorry your big moments in life are small in everyone else's. Beyond that there is no defense for you or your oh so obvious tactics and I shall endeavor to have as many people stop feeding you as I can when I have the time.

I voted for Obama. I was a democrat. I doubt I will bother voting in the future. I have dusted off my sneakers as I see a future of walking more. As gas prices go up and food prices go up everything seems to be going up in costs but paychecks for those of us who are minimum wage aren't being increased. Well, maybe more of us will be homeless.

Yes, and the only ones who support a min. wage increase are the DFL. We didn't see an increase ever when Republicans rule.

Food increases, fuel surcharges, etc.,.... The Companies just pass the cost on to the consumer...

Companies react to this increase quickly however I can not go to my boss and demand a raise to cover my fuel and food cost. The ONLY PARTY that cares for the people is the Democrats.

You can't pay your medical bills a Repub will say, I am sorry to hear that.

ok,let us get back to the story. where was bush when prices started going up into space? wait, that is right. he is an oilman. he wanted prices hi so that he could make more money on his stocks.

you do not hear the republicans calling for an investigation into the excessive cost of oil. they are owned by the oil companies.

higher prices for gas means middle and poor class cannot aford gas to get to the pols to vote out the republicans

Let's see, the last few times gas prices went up because of world events, it was all Bush's and Cheney's fault. I am suprised I have not heard that whining again. ALL AMERICANS should realize that oil is a world wide commodity drived by market conditions, and it will continue to be in stronger and stronger demand, and if we want America to remain strong, we need to utilize our domestic sources of oil. And you know what? WE HAVE IT. But the Obama regime will not let businesses go after this energy. SO who is REALLY to blame this time? Bush or Obama?

So let's see - Haley want's to know where are the jobs - did he miss the republicants playbook from November - what was their mantra - they were going to create jobs -

So let's see - Pres. Obama (and other Dem Presidents)- have wanted to get away form oil - alternative fuel - the republicant response - NO! and now they are worried about high fuel costs

So let's see - so the oil company profits have been in the billions - yet they continuallly get subsidies from the government because the republicants just can't say no their masssa's.

So let see, who really is driving up the cost of energy?
