From NBC's Ken Strickland
At a news conference today, Majority Leader Harry Reid said he expects the Senate to pass the House GOP's short-term spending bill within the next 48 hours, thereby averting a government shutdown.
The House is expected to pass the bill later today. It funds government operations for two weeks, containing $4-billion in spending cuts.
Prior to Reid's statement, Republican Leader Mitch McConell said he was "confident" the House bill would pass when it reached the Senate.
Reid said he and Senate Democrats wanted a bill longer than two weeks, allowing more time to negotiate a long term spending bill. But Republicans rejected his proposals, Reid said.

Right now you can cut 12BILLION a month from the crusades.. Which is all borrowed money ! Make the army cook and serve their own food. Make the Army protect the bases... Not some no bid company.. owned by a senators nephew ! And NOT ONE MENTION OF ANY OF THIS ! John Boner is just not serious about cutting the budgets !
What about Obama. He is the one that was saying, before the Nov. election, that Congress was going to have to make some tough choices, after the New Year, in order to cut spending and reduce the deficit. He then turned around and proposed a budget that does not cut spending (it only descreases the rate of deficit spending) and chastised the Repubs when they introduced proposals that make some of the tough choices. Glad to see that Harry Reid is unable to stop the Repubs on the CR spending cuts. Now if he and Obama will only come to their senses, now that Obama's bluff is being called, and agree to real and meaningful cuts in the 2011 and 2012 budgets we may actually make some progress, despite the "Progressives". The Repubs and the Tea Party (breathing down the necks of the Repubs) need to stay the courseand do what they weresent to Washington to do, STOP THE DEFICIT SPENDING. If Obama and Harry don't want to join the chorus they can try to explain (read spin like a mad man) that to the voters in the 2012 campaigns and they can suffer the consequences at the voting booth.
BTW, if the leadership,on both sides, can't figure out how to run the Fed Gov. on the $2.3 Trillion they currently raise in revenues (which will go up if the economy gets back on track) than they are not competent and need to go. And while they are at it, lets get a Constitutional Amendment in place mandating a balanced budget so we don't have to keep dealing with the fiscal irresponsibility that comes out of Washington year after year.
NO more insane spending
The Republicans are doing what voters elected them to do in November
What is wrong with being the party of NO?
Here we go again. They didn't demand tax cuts. They demand that the rates stay the same. But I guess in the Orwellian world of Dem newspeak, the failure to raise taxes is a tax cut. Just like the failure to raise taxes is spending. If all the Dems believe that the cure to our problems is simply to raise taxes (and continue ever increasing spending), then I have a proposal for them. They can all, voluntarily, pay more taxes. Those big Gov unions and all of the other liberal instituitions, like ACORN, can all get busy going around the country and soliciting their members and constituents to pony up some more (they can take it out of the contributions they normally give to get their hack politicians elected). We can then hand that money over to the Repubs and TEA Party and they can use it to pay down the massive deficit and balance the budget. How about it Dems, put your money where your mouth is!
Daryl, the same, old, whining, lying line gets old. Give to the rich, starve the poor; please get a life and understand we DO NOT LIVE to redistribute wealth from the workers to the takers, and the business owners who put THEIR OWN money at risk are entitled to the profits they EARN. Learn how capitalism works or go live in Europe, your socialist paradise, which is already broke, the way Bozobama wants to make us.
if you can do better why dont you run for office
To all of those negative people
If You Can Do better Why Dont You Run For Office
Are you scared
Put up or shut up
Every representative, whether Republican, Democrat or Independent, should be sent a letter like the following, from each and every constituent they have. With civility and firmness they should be informed that the people simply reject the con, the self-serving manipulation, the arrogant and stubborn partisanship that always seems to favor Special Interests and the few while giving the majority only an abundance of subterfuge. Their continued efforts that insult by taking the people for granted and that are aimed at conning the people to achieve their political ambitions need to be recognized and rejected. Maybe, just maybe they will get the message and understand that the people are watching their performance, not just their rhetoric, and will hold them responsible.
Dear Representative/Senator:
You have started a new period of governing and we who are dependent on your representation wish you well and seek to support you in a commitment to a new focus that avoids ‘more of the same’ that has cost us so much. We join you in recognizing the changing times and the real necessity for a truly changed mentality. While some may have been elected as a mistake accomplished with the substantial money and great effort expended, who now feel a loyalty to the ‘money’ that manipulated public opinion, all would be wise to recognize that those mistakes simply won’t be repeated. The pain is just too strong to continue accepting the con.
We all are totally aware of and greatly affected by the drastic problems existing today and, like yourself, are actually forced to accept the real need for change. The loss of quality American jobs and the taxes that went with them, as but one example, has drastically hurt most everyone, directly and indirectly. People are literally coming to understand the changed environment that global competition creates with redirection, retraining and the sacrifice required ... but they also know they need government to help and that they shouldn’t be alone to bear the burden and then just be fed subterfuge. The past mentality that needs to be changed is the thinking that government can concentrate on placating and patronizing Special Interests and the influential, powerful and extremely wealthy few, while constantly taking the majority for granted and giving them only apathy, the costs and deceptive rhetoric. The use of terms like “trickle down”, “open markets”, “deregulation”, “small government” and the like are attractive in theory but experience has clearly demonstrated that they really can camouflage the abuse and exploitation favoring the few and hurting the many. What we have seen whenever our elected just focus on the few, their strong supporters, and on their political ambitions while neglecting their responsibilities, is that the spread just grows dynamically with the poor becoming poorer, the total middle-class loosing ground and only the wealthy gaining. That can’t be tolerated.
We look for and support your efforts in:
Of course there is more but these items really are enough challenge and a healthy start. There should be no doubt that your efforts in attaining these goals will be strongly supported and will assure your continued success. I thank you for your service, courtesy and your attention to these matters.
Yours truly,
Signed
Or, we could go with: Attention dumbasses {or we could use Coburn's descripter}:
We are in the hole $14 Trillion. You will added anthoer $1.65 trillion this year alone. You cannot do that, no to us, not to our children and not to whatever may be left of this country when the debt comes due.
You are to immediately cut spending to 10% less than revenue. The remainder goes to paying down existing debt. We demand basic fiscal sanity and responsibility.
Or keep up what you are doing, there is another election right around the corner. Good luck with that!
But we Want the HCR Repealed Thats why we Elected Republicans and gave them Control of the House of Representatives..
Spanky, I agree with you 100%.
btw......have you noticed that our RESIDENT PROGRESSIVES are totally absent on this story and the last one about the 700,000 jobs lost bullsh!t?..........seems HIDING OUT is the democrat/progressive agenda.
Hey libs keep talking about needing to spend and passing bills before they can be read,,,The Government has no money of its own, It is taxpayer money that should be spent responsibly,,,Republicans are not much better but at least they are making an effort for now, opposite Democrats who never met a social program they wouldn't tax into existence,,
RGiles,
This is a good letter to send.
Thanks
Steve,
The House tried, and it died in the Senate.
Sounds like we need a new Senate.
And here, lets save another round of banter:
Sounds like we need a new President.
Job1.....it may have died in the Senate because harry Reid made it so, but if you think anyone has given up on uverturning the monstrosity you're fooling yourself. It will either be found unconstitutional or it will be defunded.....take your pick.
Just a question on the healthcare bill. WHy wasn't it taken up in the Senate? Who were those people that were running around everwhere anyone would listen and syaing " the american people deserve an up or down vote". They must have been wearing masks because not one person has asked them why the double standard?
Jason....you're way behind, there was a vote in the Senate (dead of night, as usual) and the Democrats voted against the House bill to repeal. I'm not sure what double standard you are talking about, but since you didn't even know there was a vote, I doubt you even understand the term.
When government tries to determine who is worthy of support and who is not, you end up with corporate subsidies, farm subsidies, milk price supports, tax credits for electric cars - the list goes on and on. We could (and should) cut them all without making a serious dent in the deficit. One problem to also consider is that when government subsidizes something , either directly or indirectly, the removal of that subsidy causes values to fall or prices to rise. Thing about what losing the mortgage deduction would do for home prices, then apply the thinking to any corporate or farm subsidy (again, think ethanol mandates and food prices). Cuts need to be intelligently implemented to prevent short term dislocations.
Regulation is not necessarily the answer either. Not one prosecution has been made under Sarbanes Oxley, although it costs business billions in compliance costs which can't be used to produce new products or services. It's also shifted billions of corporate financings to offshore markets, depriving the US of the funds and resultant taxes. Before we pull the "regulate them" lever, we need to take the time to verify that the new regulations are both substantively effective and cost effective.
In reality, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid (which creates deficits on the federal and state level) need to be reformed. Then and only then will we get serious about long term deficit reduction. My retirement age whet from 65 to 66 with the last SS reform. I don't recall their being a revolution in the streets. Maybe if we stop blaming rich folks, corporate fat cats and all of the usual suspects for our problems, we might have a chance to fix this mess.
True - the resident progressives are very literally having a bad day/week/month and let's face it, few years from here on in.
Their biggest problem is they do not get it, and do not understand that there has been a huge change in the fundamental view of the world. Gone is the notion that big gov., and giant programs are the way. Austerity is here, and there are literally $14 trillion reasons why it won't be going away anytime soon.
Just remember that they [I'm mean really, Fiesty, Bev., Navy?] don't ever see the forrest, only trees. They don't get that there are real consequences, which are really bad, to such huge debt. That the game is over. They tried and they lost. Their last bastion is public sector unions - no profit, no consequences, just raises, pensions and 100% security cause there's always more $.
That's why Walker will prevail, and why they have already lost, the light shines brightly. So really we should feel sorry for the poor little libbies. These are tough times for them.
The only real question is how long Cali, Ill, and NY can hold out before they all go BK. My bet is 15 months.
Spanky - Let's hope the "progressive" movement crawls back under it's 100 years old rock and never even sticks it's head out again. They have got to understand by now that they had a good run with getting Obama elected (which would have never happened if not for Oprah) , but the fat lady has sung.
I think they get that there are real consequences, but that's what they want - anarchy, strife, revolution. They can't get into the real problems like fiscal responsibility or self-reliance - that is the opposite of what they are about.
Walker WILL prevail, it's only a matter of time. 15 months is a pretty good guess, I wouldn't bet against that - what's the over/under?
What a nasty snide group you are. I see you denigrating progressive and any program that doesn't fit into your brainwashed mind. But where are you addressing the Wall Street bailout that was, by the way, implemented by dear Dubya before he left office...
Why don't you tell me how we went from a surplus to an economic crisis in 8 years, with wars on 2 fronts, with a Republican President, House, and Senate for six of those years.
Or maybe you should just admit you want a scapegoat, that you only listen to people who support your narrow worldview, and stfu until you actually DO SOME RESEARCH into the programs and the effects of the spending cuts you're suggesting.
I, too, want spending cuts, but not where it's going to hurt the people who don't have Congressional Healthcare packages, hundred billion dollar bonuses for fancy financial footwork, and political buddies handing them no-bid contracts to help hundreds of billions of dollars of OUR money disappear down a black hole, and never to be held accountable.
CUT oil industry subsidies and writeoffs...they were banking RECORD profits for any corporation EVER back in 2008.
Implement HARD JAIL TIME for white collar crime...a few wall street types in federal prison meeting their new butt buddies would go a long way towards curtailing it...fines and a slap on the wrist in a country club prison don't seem to be doing the job
LOBBYING needs to be eliminated...period...and if you work for a government agency and there's a failure of your agency to oversee...you personally should be liable as well...along those lines, a 5 year moratorium on moving to a private firm in the industry your agency oversaw after leaving said agency...that'd cut out some sweetheart jobs for looking the other way
And so called 'True American'...get over yourself, the democrats, liberals, and progressives weren't the dumbasses going to Tea Bagger rallies (sorry, they just sully the memory of the original Tea Party) and waving guns, ranting about 2nd amendment rights. In my family, we've always hunted and RESPECTED weapons and didn't need to brandish one at a political rally to increase the size of our genitals or to appear 'cool' to other idiots. You people embrace the nutjobs rather than marginalizing them like those on the left do...and actually encourage slaughters like the one in Tucson with your irresponsible hate-filled rhetoric.
And if you actually looked at the PATTERNS of spending vs debt and the deficit, you'd find that under democratic presidents the situation is far better than under so-called anti-tax republicans who actually DO raise taxes...so get your facts straight before you make yourself look more stupid than you already do.
My, my, .....must have touched a nerve..........My job here is done!
btw...SHOW me one Tea Party rally picture of anyone waving guns around. You do know that the shooter in Tucson was a far-left crazy, don't you?
where's -
Leave it to a rude and crass liberal to come out with the name-calling. Do you even have anything to say concerning the vine or are you just on a rant because your panties are ina twist?
Your propaganda has been de-bunked over and over so many times and by so many people that they are lame excuses instead proof that you know how to use your brain.
Spending cuts - especially to the level that they need to be cut - WILL HURT in the short term, there's no way around it. Progressives have been trying to spend this country into oblivion (both sides of the aisle).
As for your 'name' - Are you looking for some common sense? Because your post shows that you don't seem to have any, otherwise you would have been civil to other people on the vine.
And to think, when 'Gabby' was shot all of the liberals were crying for the rhetoric to be toned down by the conservatives (who were not calling names whenever they did not get their way) while the liberals continued their vitriol.
Spanky... you finally understand!!
"no profit, no consequences, just raises, pensions and 100% security cause there's always more $." ......That's the way of the rich!!!
Wall street was all about this!!! Are there some HUGE golden parachutes for teachers that I'm missing.. I mean the ones where they run an educational system into the ground and then get $10 million dollars for doing it and are set for life? Or where plumbers are living on yachts and hiding their money from the government to avoid paying taxes by using their amazing accounting firms? Or perhaps it's the government employees that are making their tax returns look like they made no money last year so they PAY NO TAX!" .... No, wait, these are all tricks of the rich.. Not working Americans!!!
You right wing idiots are all the same:
"We need less regulation" because businesses do SO well when they don't have that!! (Ask coal miners - that's worked out so well for them!)
"We need to give the rich tax cuts because that will create jobs!" (for the last 10 years we've had them and look how great we're doing as an economy! - No really where are the jobs you idiot?)
"The Democrats are just spend spend, spend.. look at the deficit" (Let's all conveniently forget that Bill Clinton LEFT A SURPLUS and your boy GWB blew it immediately!!
"GWB had the war on terror to fight, that's why the debt grew!" (But we didn't need to be in Iraq wasting 10 times as much and we can't just leave now or you war mongering idiots will cry, "oh we lost because of Obama! and the country will fall into civil war!)
"The Dems were in control for 2 years and look how much worse it got" (Let's all forget that the Republicans did everything in their power to hold up everything in the senate. The filibuster was used more than EVER before so the democrats couldn't get anything done!)
And before the election it was "Where are the Jobs!!" Now it's "Take away a women's rights and let government do it because we hate everything ELSE about government intervention EXCEPT when they tell women what to do with their bodies!!" and "Kill health care since it will kill jobs"(But actually it doesn't!) and "We need MORE tax cuts to the people that donated to our campaigns because of Citizen's United!"
Please your tired BS is just that!!
So Spanky, unless you can pony up to where you were complaining about spending for the last 8 years prior to Obama, shut the heck up and go move to another country if you don't like it!! (That's standard Republican terms during the GWB presidency so take your advice and get the f out!) you're a piece of crap right wing wind bag with no solutions.. just like the Republicans right now!!
Wow....... thats down right ....... predictable! I read the first few posts and said to myself, I wonder when the name calling was about to begin. (Again a reflection back to my return to philly in 1970 from Viet Nam) god the behavior is so eerily familiar! I read a few paragraphs of wheres response and it turned bad! I dislike the term teaba&&er. I agree with most of what moderate to conservative republicans are currently working towards. I totally agree with the abolishing of public employee unions. And I agree this has not been a good month for liberals/progressives. I just wish they would be more understanding of the term "Shellacking" When you get beat in an election the most honorable thing to do is take that into consideration when working on issues. The left has not accepted that and continues to thing they are driving the bus, when if you take the entire political environment Local, State and Federal the bus GPS is being programed by the moderate to right independents and republicans. I know it sucks in your minds.... but you really need to start dealing with it.
Let me know who is in charge of Congress during those years. From 1954 to 1994, Democrats controlled both houses of Congress with a brief Republican Senate control under Reagan, but not both houses. From 1994-2000, the Republicans controlled Congress and we saw a surplus. Again the Democrats control EVERYTHING from 2006-2010 and the crap hits the fan. Democrats also controlled both houses and the presidency for all of FDR's 3 1/2 terms.
It is my conclusion that Democratic Congressional control = crap. Just look at the past 50 years. Tremendous inflationary issues during Carter and the CRA to boot. Clinton loses his supermajority in 1994 and the economy grows and the budgets are balanced. In 2006, Democrats take control again and by 2008, its deja vu all over again...more crap.
It doesnt matter who the president is. Always look at Congress and there you will see the pattern. Bush was an abberration. Voters took care of most of Bush's Republicans in this last election so you dont have to worry about RINOs anymore.
AZchzhd, I noticed you neglected to mention the years 2001-2007, when the Repubs had control of both houses and the Presidency. Selective memory or just being inconsistent? Hmmmm......
The world may never know.
I find it semi-humorous that the Right Wingers are NOW saying that when you lose an election you have to just lay back and take it...funny, but the Repubs did more filibustering and holding up legislative bills since THEY WERE SOUNDLY BEATEN IN 2008....but now they want the Dems to go crawl in a hole?? No way in Hell is that going to happen. The crooks and con artists of the right, supported, cajoled and cheered on by their billionaire buddies are trying to finish the plunder of the US middle class that they missed out on during the Bush Regime only because the BARE majorities that the Dems achieved in 2006 slowed them down a bit. Us Progressives are looking for PROGRESS, not reverting this nation back to the Robber Baron Era that the right is so dearly fond of. The Repubs did NOT win in the Senate, and we still hold the Presidency. The Supreme Court is heavily tilted towards the Billionaire's Club and is doing everything it can, correctly or not, to make the payoff to the Corporations that the right is beholden to.
The Right Wing has lied it's way into a small majority in only the House, but those gains will be wiped away, permanantly, in 2112 if the Repubs and their Tea Party sycophants do not wake up and realize that the Corporations are like foxes in the henhouse, they are killing and eating ALL of the chickens, and when there are no more chickens, they are going to starve to death. THE PEOPLE of this Nation, the great majority of them, are sick and tired of the Lies, obfuscations and propaganda that they are fed on a daily basis by the Corporate Media, there are many other sources of news other than the Mass Media, which is why there is a growing number of people that can see that the Corporations, their Repub/Tea Party bought-and-paid-for Governors and Legislators are totally destroying their livelihoods along with their air, water and access to healthy foods on top of shipping the jobs out of this Nation, destroying wages and benefits while all the time they are giving...just GIVING the Already-Obscenely-Too-Rich-To-Fail crowd nearly a TRILLION Dollars in tax cuts, tax loopholes, zero interest loans and severely relaxed regulation so that the very crooks that are destroying this country not only get away scot free, but take home million dollar bonuses on top of it. WE WILL NOT TAKE THIS ANYMORE, the blinders are off, no matter WHAT Faux Neuz or the other Corporately Owned Media says: We SEE the Lies, We HEAR them Daily, We SEE our paychecks falling, those lucky enough to still have jobs, and we have all been seeing our pensions, healthcare, schools, infrastructure and ecology failing on us or plain being taken away. AND we see who is actually DOING that to us: The Repubs and the Corporations that they are beholden to!
If the Repubs are so keen on the idea of "The Loser Of The Election Needs To Suck It Up And Co-operate With The Winners" then why in the world did they obstruct the Dems from actually helping the poor and middle class when they were in the minority with an absolute New Record Number of filibusters and Rule 22 motions (which amounts to the same thing, just not the accountability of a REAL filibuster)...Oh Yeah, it is ALWAYS, DO As I Say, Not As I Do...and always pay the Media to say it was the OTHER Guy's Fault, with all that Corporate money that they are rolling in.
Hypocrites, you would think that the right wing had taken The Hypocritical Oath or something
I`m beginning to think we will never heal this country. Everyone wants to be right even if they do not agree with their own party favorites point of view. they`ll go along and back it up even when they know its crap. I guess what I`d like to know should I be afraid we will continue on this path until there is nothing left to fight over, or could we really work together to make this country as great as I believe it was at one time. Maybe I`m wrong, has the country always been like this and I`m just now realizing it?
wherescommonsense
Thank you You are right on.
This is all well and good. But I'm not assuming the House Tea Partiers will support this notion. John Boehner, start herding cats.
Come on Ron - every two weeks we get to do it all over again. $4 billion, now, and later, and again, and so on.
You have to be hating Pelosi, she straight out f'ed you all over. And she was/is your hero. That sir is pathetic.
Yup, Keep passing two week CRs for the rest of the year, cutting $4billion at a clip for every two weeks, and we will cut this years budget by $84 billion. Multiply that times ten years and it exceeds, by more than double, the cuts under the ten year plan Obama proposes.
Yes..... sir keep herding those Democats, just remember to change the litter boxes!
Ol' Harry Reid's stalling tactics were about to backfire right in his face.
There are 22 Class I Democratic Senators up for re-election in 2012. They enjoy a six-year term of office. The Republicans only need a net gain of three seats in the Senate to gain control of the Senate. Then old Harry Reid won't be Senate Majority leader anymore.
Now If we can just dump Obama, the Republican party will control the entire Federal government.
So you are for one party rule. Nice to know you only care for it if it seems to be in your best interest. Thanks for proving the point Edward.
Reid's finally feeling a little heat...........I say great, now turn the flame up on those overspending obstructionist. This is the PEOPLE"S COUNTRY, not Harry Reid's or his loyal followers.
When did America's future depend on the say of one old man? When did the "democrats" decided that Harry Reid got to make the decision on their votes for them?...........Lemmins
Who represented the republicants in the negotiation. Wouldn't you say that Speaker Boehner decides on their votes for them?
Oh, and when do you think the republicants will get around to passing legislation that will create jobs? Can anyone tell me that?
Where are the jobs, jobs, jobs?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That has got to be the tiredest line in the democrat playbook.........geez, get a life!
Here's one for you....Where are the cuts, cuts, cuts?!!!!!!!!!
Gee Chris Gilliard aren't you content with all the jobs Obama, Pelosi and Reid provided you through the extremely successfull stimu-less package?
are all republicans so damned stupid or is just the teabaggers? jobs, jobs, jobs.........concentrate, now focus. you arrogant fools are so busy listening to your own voices that nothing gets done.
manworkinonit.........who's getting nothing done in Wisconsin?.......concentrate, now focus,.............
http://www.johnboehner.com/?p=1546
This is from a speech John Boehner gave in October 2010. So again, we will ask WHERE ARE THE F-ING JOBS?
By getting rid of job-killing legislation and getting government out of the way, jobs will return, but it's going to take time - something liberals were asking for when Obama said that if the stimulus was passed that unemployment would not go above 8% and that he was focused on jobs 'like a laser' (for all of about 5 minues) when he was trying to sell the 'stimulus'.
Well, Chris, man, and Bryan -
Where are the jobs Obama promised?
Personally, I think you should be upset with him for causing even more harm to the economy with his and the 111th Congress' (controlled by democrats) unrelenting spending spree.
We have decided in our infinite wisdom to save the really good jobs for registered Republicans only. Sorry if you didn't qualify.
Where are the cuts to the real beasts of the budget? Funny how the teabagging nation carefully avoids much mention of the big turds floating around....social security, medicare, medicaid, defense and VA...
The ONLY people talking about reforming Social Security, Medicare, & Medicad ARE the Tea Partiers...........really, Rick...are you having trouble forming thoughts, swallowing, having headaches?....if you are, you might be having a stroke.
yo True.....maybe you should go play with your Beck doll.
manworkinonit.............is that the best you've got?
I see you couldn't actually dispute anything I said. Typical progressive - deflect, deflect, deflect, ....then HIDE!
The budget they are working on now was supposed to be done last year when the dems were in control. Paul Ryan who is working on the budget for next year has said that there will be cuts to the entitlement programs. Can anyone tell me what democrat has cut any spending? You want to make fun of the tea party but what has the leader of our nation done with the big three. That's right he's a democrat he punted by putting out a so called budget that will add a trillion dollars a year to our deficit and thats only if the economy grows twice as fast as the most optimistic economists predicts. Oh yeah and what was that article I just read rising oil prices will hurt the recovery of the economy. I remember a couple years ago when gas went over three dollars a gallon everyone was all over GW's case. Has anyone even asked the president about oil prices? Oh yeah the media is a joke anymore and leans so far to the left it's a miracle they can even stand up.
Didn't know you actaully said anything worth rebutting TA. You just asked dude if he was having a stroke. Look up at 6.1, you'll see.
Rick,
Correct me, or enlighten me, or whatever. Isn't Social Security fully funded??? You know....The Social Security Trust Fund. Is'nt it true that the money we recieve from Social Security dosen't even come from our taxes?? Is'nt that a separate withholding section on your paycheck???
So, how would cutting Social Security benefits reduce the deficit??
I keep hoping that a Republican will come up with a simple house bill: "Raise full Social Security benefit to age 70 for all who are 60 years old or younger" effective beginnng Jan 1, 2012.
I wish I were more educated regarding Medicare, Medicade and Prescription benefits but, raising the age to 68 for full benefits for all who are 60 or younger may be a good start. Further we need to (as citizens) start policing fraud aginst these progams and have a national hotline to report suspected abusers.
If nobody has the stones to aggressively prune it back, just raise the retirement age to 125 and be done with it.
lmfao.......Neil! God I hope someone else besides me laughed at that! Im good,I dont need SS so that just delays my donations to republican charities.
Tell this to the guy that has been doing physical labor all his life that he has 5or 10 more years to go.
Ron,
Not sure what herding you're looking for, the House will pass the bill today, and the Senate will pass the bill within 48 hours. The tea party folks will be happy, the Senate agreed, in theory, to pass the House bill as it stands. Now, two weeks from now, when we're back in the same spot, you may have a point. I expect that the next round will be a little more difficult, but it will probably depend on whether or not Senator Reid can grow a spine in two weeks.
Absolutely! Very good letter to send. You do know that we will sending this letter to the few...get it?
g momma, I'm with you Pal!!!
Now the really hard work begins and the stakes raised. Can President Obama bridge the gap? Stay tuned.
Obama is the gap.
Millions of Americans are losing their jobs and their homes. We all want to know why this is happening to our country. Only Dylan tells us the truth of how billions were lost on Wall Street and how the whole mess was dumped in the lap of ordinary citizens.
Media and politicians go to great lengths in obscuring the truth.
Time will tell that Dylan Ratigan was the voice in the darkness trying to speak truth to a confused world.
Reid and Obama are seeing the hand writing on the wall that is why they are squirming and trying to please -with Obama " I can give you this on the health bill, please take it so I won't look so stupid for a bill that nearly 30 states don't won't". " Better get in good with the gays, so I will flip-flop on the campaign speech where I said that marriage should be between a man and woman, now I will say it is up to them if they want to marry the same sex". What a wimp!!!! Surely we can elect someone in 2012 that has a spine and some experience running a state ( Governor) a business, Obama has never even run a kool-aid stand, no military experience, no business experience, no meeting a payroll-has no ideal what a person who works 8 or 9- 5 job experiences. Voted present when he was in the IL senate 80-90% of the time and the one time he did take the floor he blasted Petraeus!
It's funny if you think that a Dem, Repub, or tea partier has any influence on what get's passed nowadays. All of these puppets are controlled by the bankers and wealthy. Wake up already. Our Gov't is like the WWF and the bankers are Vince McMahon.
Right Bretso,
I'm a wealthy banker, and I'll admit it. I call the House and the Senate every day and tell them how they are going to vote on every bill. You betcha.
To the Govt. Who runs the Govt.? Dems., or Republicans? It is very clear that the Govt. is not taking any actions for the people. It appears our govt. people are made in overseas. Shipping jobs, no security of jobs, lower pays, No fear of God. Lately, Gas price is hiking and common people are hurting. people need healthcare but not mandatory. If these guys are paid to do a great job, please step down. Superkid can give you ideas. Please take action now,now....
Our country is in pit. Looking at the young children, what hope they have in this country. Where is patriotism, where is loyalty? It is time, well past for the rich, poor educated, uneducated and all united to stand and take delibrate u-turns. It is possible. There is no policy to fire politicians, so they have to step down voluntarily. Thank you!
Anita
1. you're incoherent babble is pointless
2. it's not relevant to this thread
and 3. quit advertising here
@ bretso25
Wile I strongly disagree with your premise, I appreciate you using proper party titles and distinguishing the tea party from republicans and would like to give you two tips. Tip #1, don't mix similes with metaphors. Tip #2, don't use 1990's wrestling analogies. It leaves you wide open to attacks of being uneducated and makes you easily dismisable.
americancitizen,
Hate to break your heart but bretso25 hit the nail on the head. The wealthy run this country. The only way to fix this country is to do away with lobbyists and their money. Hell, even our supreme court said a corporation is like an individual and can donate as much money as it wants to a campaign.
Tip #1: open your eyes because right now you are blind if you don't think the rich and corporations run this country. Can you say Egypt?
Tip #2: when the American people take back this country is when things will be right. Can you say Egypt? It is coming to that. As a veteran I don't see this country getting fixed until the people revolt. You can only take so much from the masses and give to the few for so long before the crap hits the fan.
Brian,
Yes, a Corporation is like an individual in that it is in fact an artificial person.
Corporations are an extension of the concept of a "going concern"
Realizing that we are, in fact, mortal, and that our days are numbered. The idea is to keep a company running even though it's founder is deceased. Henry Ford is dead, but the Ford motor company is still here.
Corporations also limitthe owners liability to the assets of the corporation. Therefore, if I own Browning Firearms company Inc. And Browning suffers a huge legal judgement that takes all their assets, my personal assets are safe. (supposedly)
When the government has a shutdown and the employees are told not to come to work, they usually end up paying them for the days off later. This is disgusting. It's bad enough that the government workers have better benefits and job security than anyone else in America, but when funding them becomes unsustainable we shut the government down and pay them to sit home and do nothing?!! I can understand that the lowest level govt empoyee cannot afford to lose a few days pay, but those making more than $25,000 should not get paid, or at least get a minimal check of no more than $200/week or so. Enough is enough.
Boy are you delusional. Government workers have slightly better job security but not one guaranteed benefit beyond certain legal holidays off, just like everyone else. They also get employer paid health care like most people.
Government workers do not get 401(k)s, do not collect social security at retirement.
What they do NOT get is guaranteed annual pay raises. Most state workers across the country missed out on at least one pay raise in the last 15 years, and numerous retirement opension contributions, due to the Contract On America gang and the worst president in United States history. Remember him? The one who was given an election in 2000 after Florida was told by a right-wing, corrupted SCOTUS NOT to count the votes.
You really do need to stop watching News Corp and check in with reality occasionally.
Political Prisoner,
To take it a step further the SCOTUS, by the constitution, illegallly ruled on that case. By the constitution, states handle their own election process for president. The republicans stole that election plain and simple. When the Florida Supreme Court ruled to recount that should have been the end of it. SCOTUS took the case against what our constitution says. Any one who disagrees, look it up.
You are living in such a sheltered world. Only top jobs in the private sector get what you claim they get. The average worker has next to nothing. No job security; no pay raises unless management starts to get a lot of grief from the employees and then they're very stingy raises; health care is almost a thing of the past to medium to low-level employees (Very few employers are hiring new employees with benefits - they hire long-term "temps" with no benefits, retirement, security, etc. who are treated like dogs by the old, non-temp management.); Almost no holidays (My last job made me choose between Xmas and New years for holiday pay.) With very few exceptions, my last employer was the only employer hiring in my area for the last 18 months, or so - according to those job hunting that were laid off from there and they offered only "temp" jobs. I spent 8 years trying to get a permanent job with benefits in my area while jobs in the area were going to Mexico. Only temp jobs with minimal pay, no benefits, no health care, no pension, scant holidays, and regular lay offs with no pay.
Do not call me delusional you moron. You government workers are such spoiled brats. You have no clue what the job market is like outside your safe little bubble.
PP and Brian,
In the words of Obama....We won, get over it.
Norah,
At last, someone who paints a true picture of the real job market. Thank you.
I grew up in the 50's and 60's, so I have the benefit of hindsight. There were tons of decent paying jobs available then. You could literally take your pick. I worked in a steel mill, construction, shipping, and infrastructure repair. I am now retired, but I would hate to be a young man with a wife and kids trying to make it in this economy. Very bleak.
And the really sad fact is that, no matter who is in office, I see no real reason for those jobs to come back. We have entered into a world economy,(thanks to NAFTA), and we are just too expensive labor wise. Who would be willing to work for $2.00 a day??
As this generation ages, they will come to realize that they have no retirement waiting for them in their "golden years"
Harry, how many jobs will this stop gap cost?
They need alot more than 2 weeks! Boner PROMISED US JOBS! He told us over and over his #1 priority was JOBS. Now we know he means TAKE AWAY JOBS. The American voter was FOOLED AGAIN!
It might be nice is somebody reported what is actually IN this legislation ...
You had to know Harry would cave. He couldn't stand to see the government shut down for a minute, let alone two weeks. Good job Repubs in sticking to your guns. Now get busy on crafting a budget that makes serious cuts in spending. After that stsrt working on a balanced budget amendment.
So, all the burden of deficit reduction is to be on the backs of the struggling people while the top 2% continue to rape America.
The capital gains tax where most giant money is made is only 15%. How can we afford this?
Our 4 biggest banks have 8 trillion in assets and still get billions in 0% loans. How can we afford to give billions to many who belong in prison and continue rob the people?
Oil companies get billions tax free from the "Oil depletion Allowance" and other subsidies. How can we afford this gang of cutthroat thieves?
Israel has free health care, free education, 0% home loans and many benefits that are too good for Americans; Still, we give them billions in cash and billions in deadly weapons. How and why can we afford to do this.
A charge of 1/2% on all derivative, stock and commodities trades would put us in surplus and have most effect on the big rich money manipulators. How can we afford to run our country for 1 or 2% while the middle class declines and poverty increases?
No politicians are suggesting that we touch banks, wall street or big corporations who are destroying America. How can we afford to live with a government that is owned and operated by pigs.
Sadly Frank, it seems your questions have fallen on deaf ears.
Frank,
Obamacare alone will cost us over 372 Billion in the first ten years. Thats over 1/3 of a trillion in spending.
We lose 4 Billion per day, every day in our interest charges on our national debt. that amounts to One Trillion, 460 Billion per year, and growing. All this is before we spend the first dime. Head of the CBO stated that we have some time, but not a lot of time. We have the "luxury" of making some painful choices now, soon we won't have any choice. the dollar will be worth Zilch.
Lemme see under the Republican plan we will lose jobs and the deficit will actually grow. Yup great plan let's do it
Right King,
Massive cuts are needed soon. Need to dump Obamacare immediately. Seal the border and chop welfare to the bone.
Any Republican can find work anytime he/she wants to, so jobs aren't a big issue here.
Edward: You are right, welfare for the wealthy is way out of hand. When the middle class are declining and poverty is growing, while the big rich get richer it is obvious we are top heavy and out of balance. America cannot afford this socialism for the rich.
We will curb the greed of banks, wall street and big corporations are we will soon be in depression and chaos.
Actually the rich have no need of welfare. Ask Charlie Sheen LOL
