LETS BREAK THAT DOWN, That 988.00 per week. or 4250.00 per month before tax. say after tax that is 3600 using a .85 mulitplier. my multipier is .83 on 1200 per week including health, dental and disability even with the extension of the Bush tax cut.

Typical house Note is about say 1200 per month, not including property tax

Utilities are say 400 permonth

Food for a family of 4 say 150 per week or $600 per month.

so for that person that makes that whopping 51,000 per year, more than half there pay goes to housing, food and utilities,

property tax, clothing, transportantion, car notes, insurance, credit cards, must come from that other $1400.00. per month. its a wonder that they don't starve. i could not live on that when i had a wife and 4 kids.

how can you put more in ther pockets when the 51k is based upon the calander year. they don't get paid for 10 months any more there salary is now based upon 12 months and if they did still get paid over 10 months most teachers don't get summer jobs unless they have connection on the school board to work summers. inaddition schools don't supply the supplies they use to so in many cases so if a teachers needs something extra that comes out of there own pocket.

I also have a daughter in the ed field, MS, PHD, the works.....Cost me a few dollars but she's worth it. And she is great at her profession - the kids love her, and she has been identified as a top educator for a few years. But she is unhappy with the change in the profession, for she doesn't educate kids anymore. The state makes it mandatory to teach to the API or whatever they call the state test, so the state looks good and receives more money to spend on education. Read teacher salaries and benefits.

Jeff, often their poorer students aren't coming to school with the supplies on the list and the teachers make that up out of their own money, too. Not to mention the 12-14 hour days grading papers, chaperoning, coaching the extracurriculars, etc.

A lot of teachers enjoy the vacation, don't want to work the full year. Should they be paid the same for not working as those that do work more. Asinine. If they want to make more, they can get a summer job, get a different job. It is what is and they knew it since 1st grade.

Those who are quick to condemn teacher compensation use a very incomplete formula for calculating salary justifications. Every teacher would probably be happy to be so restricted. There would be no after-class parent-teacher conferences. No extracurricular activities which most teachers in middle and high school are required to attend ~ i.e., band concerts, sports events, field trips, P-TA meetings; and then the weekend "continuing education" seminars one is required to attend, along with mandates for graduate degrees within a specified time of the teacher's career; lesson planning and paper grading, usually performed at home on the teacher's own time; a career that allows for a private life but if you go out to dinner with friends, they may have a pre-meal Margarita or a beer with their Mexican dinner, but not the teacher ~ it sets a bad example. Its a career where one deals with the public daily but knows that they can seldom depend on their management to defend them if there is a complaint lodged against them ~ its easier and politically safer to placate the citizen than stand up for the teacher. Then a teacher is in a career than can be instantly interrupted or outright ended if a student brings a complaint of untoward conduct by the teacher, be it truthful of fictitious. Even if fictitious, the stain of accusation follows the teacher for his/her entire career. Honestly, clergy has more privilege in life than the classroom educator.

Yep, the teacher's life is a lark. Their entire workload is confined to their student contact hours in the classroom. Nothing else. And they get summers off and most holidays. My wife is a Fed Employee, and has been one for the last 17 years, and I can attest to the fact she gets paid far less than her counterparts in the private sector. And those benefits everyone is screaming about - for just the two of us, our share of the Health Insurance is around $500 a month.

One of my Sisters is a teacher with a BA in Education, an MA in Special Ed, and an MA Education Administration, but because she chose to work for a Catholic Elementary School, her pay and benefits are such that she has to work two other jobs just to make ends met, and she is single! When someone told Bush that she was also working three jobs during a Town Hall, he said one of the few truthful things ever to cross his lips - "This is something uniquely American." Damn right it is - no other First World nation treats their public Service Employees, or any workers, with so little regard that they need more than one job to live comfortably. Middle-class people should not have to worry about being able to buy food, or heating their homes, or making rent/mortgage payments. Neither should the Poor and Elderly - if we are, as so many Fanatical Christians claim daily, the US is a Christian Nation, then why are we so quick to dismiss the very people Jesus told us to treat right? Why are we giving tax breaks to the already super rich? Did not Jesus say they have a lower chance of getting into Heaven than a camel has to pass through the eye of a needle? Did He not say that one should give away one's wealth, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, tend to the sick, and treat everyone as He treated people? Mathew was a Government Employee - a Tax Collector, yet Jesus had no issues with him. So why is it that so many Right-wing Christians support the party that does the exact opposite of what being Christian means - to be Christ-like? Moral voters sure have a weird way of casting their votes and of supporting people who espouse non-Christian morals, like give to the Rich, and the Big Businesses (owned by the Rich).

This is how we treat the people that the public depends upon. Athletes and Celebrities earn $Millions, but the people that run and work for government agencies and in classrooms and Public Hospitals barely make a living wage. Um, shouldn't the pay of teachers be compared to the pay of other college educated people and not to the average pay of the general public? Should we really be using the pay of a high school dropout in any of the calculations questioning the compensation of teachers?

nutgrape, you are correct and several sources can be found where that has been done. It turns out that teachers are paid less than people with the same education are paid in the private sector. A quick search on the web will provide you with the information you are looking for . . . but then, maybe you already know this and are just making a very astute observation.

I do believe that Standardized Testing began in the late 50's early 60's. They have grown since that time.

The local school districts in my area began 'teaching to the test' in the 80's sometime.

Steve Buddy, say that then, my mother was a teacher and for years the unions turned a blind eye to bad teachers, that has changes, the unions don't protect teachers like they did 20 years ago. can it get better yes, but lets not act like the unions protect all teachers.

this is where tenure comes in, at my kids highschool, if teachers student did not test well on the national achievement test, they were fired. this never happened why my mother taught. Kids were push from grade to grade.

also lets give some blame to parents, lets face it steve our parents perpared us for school, unlike parent today. my mother got sick and tired of having to teach kids there basic colors, alphabet and Numbers in kindgargen when, we went to kindergarten you know we knew these things because your mother and father like mine took the time to prepare us, right!!!

in evanston illinois where my kids went they spend 12k per student, in naperville its about 10k per student, in fordhieghts one of the poorest burbs in the country its 4k per student.

Much of the bloating in education isn't from teacher's it's from administrators. They make way too much. I would rather see it go to the teacher's. Why does someone get paid to sit on a school board? That said I do think teacher's should pay into Healthcare and retirement just like the rest of us.

Actually Safecracker, the Dems in Wisconsin ARE doing their jobs: They are protecting the People of Wisconsin from the ravages of the Right, making sure, via filibuster by foot, that the Repubs are unable to pass a law that would harm the people of the state and cost them even more money than it is 'supposed' to save. How can selling off the power/cooling companies to the lowest bidder possibly help the State? How can stripping the unions of their right to Negotiate possibly help The People? The ONLY people it helps is the already-obscenely-too-rich-to-fail crowd that DOES NOT pay their fair share in taxes already (see tax breaks for corporations who re NOT hiring).
