# The Week Ahead: Countdown to shutdown?

Are we headed for the first government shutdown in 16 years? How we got here – an explainer, a new NBC-Wall Street Journal poll. The latest jobs report, Scott Walker on Meet the Press, Huckabee’s book tour kicks off, Obama meets with Mexico’s Calderon, raises money in Florida.

# Discuss this post

With all the poutrage from the anti-education crowd this week, my daughter (a PROUD teacher) asked me to share this with you:

Are Teachers Over Compensated?

Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do - babysit!

We can get that for less than minimum wage.

That's right. Let's give them \$3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school, or at home supposedly planning or talking with parents. That would be \$19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan -- that equals 6-1/2 hours). So \$3.00/hr x 6-1/2 hours = \$19.50.

So each parent should pay \$19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children. Now how many students do they teach in a day...maybe 30? OK, that's \$19.50 x 30 = \$585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.

LET'S SEE....

That's \$585/day x 180 days= \$105,300 per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).

What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage (\$7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to \$8.00 an hour. That would be \$8/hr x 6-1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = \$280,800 per year.

Wait a minute -- there's something wrong here! There sure is!

The average teacher's salary (nationwide) is \$50,000. \$50,000/180 days = \$277.77/per day/30 students=\$9.25/6.5 hours = \$1.42 per hour per student--a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!

Sounds to me, like you ALL are getting one hell of a deal!

But please, don't let this stop the efforts to balance budgets on the backs of the working poor & waging war on education!

SHOUT OUT to our hosts/moderators who posses the patience of 'saints' for putting up with us week after week!

I've had enough politics for the week – Let's get this party started.. uh huh… started in here!

IR – if can we get a some 'Black Eyed Peas' on the old jukebox tonight, I would be most grateful! ;o)

Now bartender, will you please whip up a nice tall pitcher of Libertinies for my friends? Stirred not shaken of course… ;o)

What do you think about this for a bumper sticker: FOX News, the more you watch the less you know!

Terrific post, Feisty Redhead. Teachers, the unsung heroes.

I like the bumpersticker, almost as much as an old favorite,' if you can read this, thank a teacher'.

Ol' Steve must have been asleep when his teacher went of over homophones. I think he suffers from narcolepsy.

To our hosts here, thank you for a very entertaining week, and for some good topics and a willingness to critique yourselves too. That makes me feel as if I am not whistling in the breeze.

Everyone, be safe and have a wonderful weekend. Peace.

FACT:

Wisconsin teachers are paid an average salary of \$51,000. Annualized to account for their 180-day work year, that's \$68,000, and that is in addition to their very fine benefits, pensions, and job security. The median household income — that is, total household income, including households with two or more earners — was \$49,993 in 2009 in Wisconsin. Therefore, after adjusting for the different work years — and not including teachers' unusually generous benefits —

a typical single Wisconsin teacher earns 36 percent more than the typical Wisconsin home. [Matthew Shaffer NRO].

So the average family with two income earners makes 36% less and has to babysit over 7 times as much!

Absurd argument. (I hope this is just an example of 1st grade reasoning, surely not 10th grade.)

I have no issue with teachers, just unions. In fact.........

1. Why do Wisconsin teachers not have the individual right to teach unless they belong to unions?

2. Why do Wisconsin teachers not have the individual right to opt out of unions?

3. Why does the government in Wisconsin have to spend millions of dollars taking tax payer money out of teachers' checks to send to the unions without the teachers ever seeing the money?

Seems like basic freedoms. Yet, liberals are aghast of these very liberties.

Anyway......

51,000 A YEAR.

LETS BREAK THAT DOWN, That 988.00 per week. or 4250.00 per month before tax. say after tax that is 3600 using a .85 mulitplier. my multipier is .83 on 1200 per week including health, dental and disability even with the extension of the Bush tax cut.

Typical house Note is about say 1200 per month, not including property tax

Utilities are say 400 permonth

Food for a family of 4 say 150 per week or \$600 per month.

so for that person that makes that whopping 51,000 per year, more than half there pay goes to housing, food and utilities,

property tax, clothing, transportantion, car notes, insurance, credit cards, must come from that other \$1400.00. per month. its a wonder that they don't starve. i could not live on that when i had a wife and 4 kids.

Bob this is 2011 Not 1950. 51k is not any money but to you its the world.

Annualized to account for their 180-day work year, that’s \$68,000.

how can you put more in ther pockets when the 51k is based upon the calander year. they don't get paid for 10 months any more there salary is now based upon 12 months and if they did still get paid over 10 months most teachers don't get summer jobs unless they have connection on the school board to work summers. inaddition schools don't supply the supplies they use to so in many cases so if a teachers needs something extra that comes out of there own pocket.

#1.12 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:01 PM EST

Steve, I agree with your comments....Feisty should go to her watering hole and drink those libertinis. What the heck is a libertini anyway, a glass of water with an olive for \$8?

I also have a daughter in the ed field, MS, PHD, the works.....Cost me a few dollars but she's worth it. And she is great at her profession - the kids love her, and she has been identified as a top educator for a few years. But she is unhappy with the change in the profession, for she doesn't educate kids anymore. The state makes it mandatory to teach to the API or whatever they call the state test, so the state looks good and receives more money to spend on education. Read teacher salaries and benefits.

PIM's "It Could Be Worse Attitude":

It could be worse, my employer COULD make me PAY THEM for a job,...

It could be worse, they could install showers at the office and give me the job of soap dropping,...

It could be worse, I could have to pay the Wall Street bonuses out of my own pocket,...(oh wait, that one's actually happening)

Come on, everyone, Pile on Now!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Jeff, often their poorer students aren't coming to school with the supplies on the list and the teachers make that up out of their own money, too. Not to mention the 12-14 hour days grading papers, chaperoning, coaching the extracurriculars, etc.

The only people who want to villify teachers are the morons who never learned anything and thought education was a waste of their precious party time. Only the truly UNEDUCATED could justify blaming the LOWER MIDDLE CLASS for the ails this country is in at the hands of the Republican Tools who don't believe in government and by that very belief system PERPETUATE the BAD government syndrome by failing miserably at governing and then telling everyone GOVERNMENT is the problem.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

safecracker, you do know that teaching to the test is the tenet of No Child Left Behind? Just checking.

#1.14 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:19 PM EST

Jeff,

A lot of teachers enjoy the vacation, don't want to work the full year. Should they be paid the same for not working as those that do work more. Asinine. If they want to make more, they can get a summer job, get a different job. It is what is and they knew it since 1st grade.

Annualized, they still make 36% more than the average household. If they are married to another teacher, they are way, way ahead of the typical family.

Twist it however you want. Ignore reality if you want, the peole are waking up and they are sick of liberal lala land.

Bob,

I guess you never taught and tried to find summer work. I had a 9 month salary, spread over 12 months because I was never assured of summer work. Finally had to quite teaching. Could not afford the love of my job. Doubled my salary when I went private. So don't judge until you have walked a mile in his/her moccasins. Also, teachers must have a BA or BS in a didactic subject plus all those other teaching classes. Did you graduate from high school?

#1.18 - Sat Feb 26, 2011 1:11 AM EST

Brought to you by . . . . . the same folk who claim one should not be punished for achieving success. I suppose that only applies to fat cats and big wigs of the corporate world, but never educators. Those who are quick to condemn teacher compensation use a very incomplete formula for calculating salary justifications. Every teacher would probably be happy to be so restricted. There would be no after-class parent-teacher conferences. No extracurricular activities which most teachers in middle and high school are required to attend ~ i.e., band concerts, sports events, field trips, P-TA meetings; and then the weekend "continuing education" seminars one is required to attend, along with mandates for graduate degrees within a specified time of the teacher's career; lesson planning and paper grading, usually performed at home on the teacher's own time; a career that allows for a private life but if you go out to dinner with friends, they may have a pre-meal Margarita or a beer with their Mexican dinner, but not the teacher ~ it sets a bad example. Its a career where one deals with the public daily but knows that they can seldom depend on their management to defend them if there is a complaint lodged against them ~ its easier and politically safer to placate the citizen than stand up for the teacher. Then a teacher is in a career than can be instantly interrupted or outright ended if a student brings a complaint of untoward conduct by the teacher, be it truthful of fictitious. Even if fictitious, the stain of accusation follows the teacher for his/her entire career. Honestly, clergy has more privilege in life than the classroom educator.

Yep, the teacher's life is a lark. Their entire workload is confined to their student contact hours in the classroom. Nothing else. And they get summers off and most holidays. It is apparent that those who are most ignorant about educators are the ones who criticize them ~ out of their own ignorance.

Steve, where does anyone talk about Boner's drinking problem other than in YOUR post? How does this even relate to the issue? You drinking the self-spiked cool-aid Beck guzzles? This thread is talking about how little Public Employees, particularly Teachers, actually get paid.

My wife is a Fed Employee, and has been one for the last 17 years, and I can attest to the fact she gets paid far less than her counterparts in the private sector. And those benefits everyone is screaming about - for just the two of us, our share of the Health Insurance is around \$500 a month.

One of my Sisters is a teacher with a BA in Education, an MA in Special Ed, and an MA Education Administration, but because she chose to work for a Catholic Elementary School, her pay and benefits are such that she has to work two other jobs just to make ends met, and she is single! When someone told Bush that she was also working three jobs during a Town Hall, he said one of the few truthful things ever to cross his lips - "This is something uniquely American." Damn right it is - no other First World nation treats their public Service Employees, or any workers, with so little regard that they need more than one job to live comfortably. Middle-class people should not have to worry about being able to buy food, or heating their homes, or making rent/mortgage payments. Neither should the Poor and Elderly - if we are, as so many Fanatical Christians claim daily, the US is a Christian Nation, then why are we so quick to dismiss the very people Jesus told us to treat right? Why are we giving tax breaks to the already super rich? Did not Jesus say they have a lower chance of getting into Heaven than a camel has to pass through the eye of a needle? Did He not say that one should give away one's wealth, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, tend to the sick, and treat everyone as He treated people? Mathew was a Government Employee - a Tax Collector, yet Jesus had no issues with him. So why is it that so many Right-wing Christians support the party that does the exact opposite of what being Christian means - to be Christ-like? Moral voters sure have a weird way of casting their votes and of supporting people who espouse non-Christian morals, like give to the Rich, and the Big Businesses (owned by the Rich).

This is how we treat the people that the public depends upon. Athletes and Celebrities earn \$Millions, but the people that run and work for government agencies and in classrooms and Public Hospitals barely make a living wage. How is that looking out for the Middle class and their children and grandchildren? Answer - it isn't!

Brilliant post. No Party Affiliation: Come back often.

#1.22 - Sat Feb 26, 2011 4:08 PM EST

Um, shouldn't the pay of teachers be compared to the pay of other college educated people and not to the average pay of the general public? Should we really be using the pay of a high school dropout in any of the calculations questioning the compensation of teachers?

#1.23 - Sat Feb 26, 2011 10:52 PM EST

nutgrape, you are correct and several sources can be found where that has been done. It turns out that teachers are paid less than people with the same education are paid in the private sector. A quick search on the web will provide you with the information you are looking for . . . but then, maybe you already know this and are just making a very astute observation.

I do believe that Standardized Testing began in the late 50's early 60's. They have grown since that time.

The local school districts in my area began 'teaching to the test' in the 80's sometime.

That's the little-known truth about a government shutdown. The government doesn't shut down.

WASHINGTON – Social Security checks would still go out. Troops would remain at their posts. Furloughed federal workers probably would get paid, though not until later. And virtually every essential government agency, like the FBI, the Border Patrol and the Coast Guard, would remain open.

Source: AP story posted at: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110224/ap_on_re_us/us_what_shutdown

#3 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:21 PM EST

Guess that makes shutting down government acceptable, even though it will cost millions of tax payer dollars to do it and all those GOP spending cuts will be wasted.

#3.1 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 5:16 PM EST

Steve Buddy, say that then, my mother was a teacher and for years the unions turned a blind eye to bad teachers, that has changes, the unions don't protect teachers like they did 20 years ago. can it get better yes, but lets not act like the unions protect all teachers.

this is where tenure comes in, at my kids highschool, if teachers student did not test well on the national achievement test, they were fired. this never happened why my mother taught. Kids were push from grade to grade.

also lets give some blame to parents, lets face it steve our parents perpared us for school, unlike parent today. my mother got sick and tired of having to teach kids there basic colors, alphabet and Numbers in kindgargen when, we went to kindergarten you know we knew these things because your mother and father like mine took the time to prepare us, right!!!

also my mother taught in the area of public housing where she got NO support from Parents.

there is plenty of blame to go around.

again have a good weekend bud. I'm serouis watch thrugood on HBO it was very good. you will see why people like me hate Clarence Thomas so much!!!!

in evanston illinois where my kids went they spend 12k per student, in naperville its about 10k per student, in fordhieghts one of the poorest burbs in the country its 4k per student.

#5.8 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:20 PM EST

Much of the bloating in education isn't from teacher's it's from administrators. They make way too much. I would rather see it go to the teacher's. Why does someone get paid to sit on a school board? That said I do think teacher's should pay into Healthcare and retirement just like the rest of us.

#5.9 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 8:20 PM EST

Steve's lack of education is right out there for everyone to see. More than once, he has wrongfully said that Feisty claimed her daughter wrote the missive when Feisty claimed no such thing. All Feisty claimed was that her daughter sent it to her, not that she wrote it.

Steve has his stupidity and lack of education on display here on a daily basis. When he loses a debate? He yawns. When he has no leg to stand on, he yawns. When challenged to back up or prove what he says is true, he can't so he yawns. Like a child, he is simply doing it for attention.

Steve is a pathetic, stupid and boring a\$\$.

Hi, Feisty: this was "honeydo" week here at the farm. Hubby and I are into some serious remodeling, and the man, who is the soul of patience, didn't turn a hair when I said: "Gee, the kitchen looks wonderful, or at least it will when the new flooring is in, best tear out the wallpaper in the dining room too." Sey, the pup considered it a wonderful adventure as he was allowed to "help". He is pretty good at floor removal. But, what oh what have we learned this week? The Republican war against the middle class and working poor continues apace as Wisconsin Republicans disenfranchised Democrats by holding a vote on the sly. Good for ya fellows! What a remarkable view of democracy and respect for democracy THAT was. Dems in WI. My hat is off to you for your valiant effort to hold the line in the face of tyranny. Drinks on are on me at the Dew Drop Inn tonight for those of you who did everything you could to protect your constituents, the citizens of Wisconsin. In other bsc news, In Georgia, good ol boy Franklin wants to make women who have miscarriages PROVE that they were spontaneous..because...well, he hates women. Could be an interesting job opening up in Georgia for miscarriage czars, but it makes me wonder how much more emotional pain these neanderthals want to cause? Back in Wisconsin, Walker, not an intellectual heavy weight, got punked, and make it evident that he has NO respect, even for the safety of protesters, by admitting that he gave some thought to putting in troublemakers. When does the recall effort start in Wisconsin, I think this guy is giving you lots of reasons to do that! IR, I'm headed to the Dew Drop Inn, bringing hubby this week, he can use a good strong drink after the work we put in here. Feisty, hope the popcorn is made...lots to laugh about this week. My thanks to all who make this such an interesting spot to come and exchange views. Every time I hear the attacks against school teachers, I think of the young teacher who called me, to suggest that my developmentally disabled son be put in her class, and the miracles she created in his life. God bless all the teachers, we owe an lot to you.

#8 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:32 PM EST

Well, you certainly had a plate full this week! No wonder I was missing you! ;o)

Nothing worse than remodeling in my book! I LOVE the finished product it's the process that sucks!

Glad I'll finally get to meet Mr, NewDayDawning - first rounds on me!

#8.1 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 5:07 PM EST

If the investigations play out the way some believe, it won't be a recall, NDD; but rather an impeachment!

Can't wait to meet the good Doctor, this evening. Oh, and IR - The Big Chill soundtrack is one of my favorites. Heard it through the Grapevine seems appropriate given all that is going on.

#8.2 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 5:17 PM EST

Terrific post, newdayDawning. I heard that about the Georgia guy demanding proof for miscarriages--these conservative wingnuts have Rice Krispies for brains but that is disrespectful of Snap, Crackle and Pop.

#8.3 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 5:23 PM EST

I think impeachment may be where this will wind up, Clara: Jody, did you get snow? We are back in the freezer here. And the right wing? You can't make this stuff up!

#8.4 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 5:28 PM EST

NDD and Jody, Nice post there. Those Georgia boys are a 'hoot' aren't they?

They did their Mommas proud this past week, between trying to regulate miscarriages and wondering when the president will get shot, a right pair of Georgia peaches, no testicular fortitude needed there. Good grief, who raised these dolts.

#8.7 - Sun Feb 27, 2011 9:11 PM EST

Dang is it Friday already? Don’t time fly when you’re having fun?

Looks like we’ve got the politics pretty well covered this week and I see that nobodies come to any permanent harm. Hope everybody takes the week end and rubs the bruises and scrapes a little and shows up bright and early Monday morning for another go round. Looks like it’s going to be an interesting week.

Lost in all the Political Cacophony this week is the Earthquake down in New Zealand. Sympathies and Prayers for you’ll losses and Hopes and Good Thoughts for all on a speedy recovery. If we can lend a hand you have but to ask and we’ll do our best.

Nash - No, thank YOU - when I first started lurking around here and trying to get up the nerve to post myself, "Nashville Fan" was always the first name I used to look for. You and IR can take all the credit (or blame?) for there being a JoAnne in PA at all!

‘Puter glitch kept me of the board yesterday so I would be remiss if I didn’t thank you Joanne for the kind words and for putting me in such fine company as Nash. I started sometime in’08 one morning just to see if I could more than anything else. The F.R. regular crew didn’t beat me up to bad right off and took a little time and encouraged me for which I’ve always been grateful. My participation here and the relationships I have made is one of the greatest pleasures of my life. And yes I remember very well that Joanne from Pa. first post. It was the first indication that there might be some folks out there listening that I didn’t know about. So if there’s any more of you’ll out there do what Joanne did and come talk to us. We are always interested in hearing what you have to say even if we don’t always agree with you. Takes a lot of different spices to make a good stew now don’t it folks.

Now down at the Dew Drop Inn we’re going to restock the Hoops of that good ‘ol Sharp Cheddar and I’ve been promised some of the other Partners are going to drop by with some goodies for our Hoosiers. Drinks for you’ll with the flat accents are still on the house your money’s no good here. As our Ace Steeler alluded to this morning this is going to be Motown Weekend. Mat sound a little strange for a country boy but Motown holds a special place in my heart. Let’s just say Aretha, Gladys; Dianne and several other of the Ladies and Gentlemen of the Motor City kept me company in some very lonesome places and leave it at that. Gladys and “Rainy Night in Georgia” and “Friendship Train” have always been favorites of mine but you’ll talk to old Drive-By and he’ll hook you up if we can get him out of his Custom Tree house out back.

Come Back Inn is still pretty full with all our “he ain’t here” guests but as always if you overindulge at the Dew Drop we’ll bring you on down here and prop you up in a chair in front of the fire and keep your Buddies and they’re Sharpies off you. Will have to tell any of you’ll fellows down in Washington that thinking of skipping town next week so you can avoid voting to shut down the Government to bring those Sleeping Bags that you’ve been sleeping in your offices with along with you cause until we get our Midwestern guests situated so they can go home you’re going to have to sleep in the Barn.

As always my thanks and appreciation to our hosts for their time, giving me a little place to stand, a subject to comment on, a forum to put it in, and their indulgence when I don’t quite get it right or get a little off subject. I purely do appreciate it. Hope you’ll have a fine weekend and good fun among folks that you know and love. To my fellow participants keep well, keep safe, and keep the faith. We’ll make it. See you’ll next week

Barkeep I’m about wore out this week so get out the pillows and set me up for a soft landing ‘cause I comin’ in on a wing and a prayer with one engine gone and the other just a sputterin’. Set everybody up a round somebody throw a Quarter in the music machine and let’s get this little shindig started before the RH ex ST figures out where I’m at and drags me back up on the Hill.

Tell you what I'll do you get busy this evening and go see if you can't find you a friend. Surely even you have one. You'll come on down and and I'll buy you a drink. Your going to have to stop at the front door and send me a message in for me to come get you though 'cause I don't think the old Bullriding Bouncer is going to let you by once he gets a look at those beady little old hate filled eyes and the bullsh!t running out across your chin.

B. Honest, some of those on the left are not showing up to do their jobs, drunk or sober - those Running Party Democrats in WI!

Party on at the Ritz-Carlton in IL Dudes! Forest Gump forever!!!!!!

#9.10 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:12 PM EST

IR & DBO

I did give Steve some advice about falling asleep all slack jawed like that in public. With the places he hangs out, he's libel to end up with a 'mouthful'; but since he chooses to not TAKE my advice, I guess we can assume he's gotten a taste for that sort of thing and now yawns like a chirping bird to be 'fed'?

It's just a theory, I'm workin' out the kinx -- oops kinks now,...just sayin'.

#9.11 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:33 PM EST

Actually Safecracker, the Dems in Wisconsin ARE doing their jobs: They are protecting the People of Wisconsin from the ravages of the Right, making sure, via filibuster by foot, that the Repubs are unable to pass a law that would harm the people of the state and cost them even more money than it is 'supposed' to save. How can selling off the power/cooling companies to the lowest bidder possibly help the State? How can stripping the unions of their right to Negotiate possibly help The People? The ONLY people it helps is the already-obscenely-too-rich-to-fail crowd that DOES NOT pay their fair share in taxes already (see tax breaks for corporations who re NOT hiring). The Dems are doing what the people of that state elected them to do: Look out for their interests, the Repubs are Not!

#9.12 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:33 PM EST

Motown? Did someone mention Motown? I was actually an employee of Hitsville in my younger days. I also had the privilege of mixing the Stylistics and Chi-lites and met Galdys Knight (of the Pips fame). If you ever get a chance, see Gladys Knight in concert. She is a true professional, a great singer and a very classy lady.

I'll tell ya'll more down at the DDI.

#9.13 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 9:24 PM EST

IR -

The honor is all mine, my friend. The power was off here much of the day yesterday because of the wind. But hey, from the looks of it, sitting in the dark and staring at a blank screen all afternoon was still more illuminating then being on here and watching Steve yawn and misspell "vitriol" and put every other word in capital letters inappropriately (does that give anyone else a headache too?) and whine some more about a bunch of strangers from all across the country who have grown to know and respect each other over the last few years winding down the week with a couple of imaginary drinks to go with all that great music and those ever-fascinating and intellectually stimulating conversations. Gotta say one thing for those imaginary drinks, though - the imaginary hangover the next day is soooooo much easier to handle than the one or two real ones I ever had in my all too (not) misspent youth!

#9.14 - Sat Feb 26, 2011 2:01 PM EST

Boy, you got that right JoAnne! I think we should meet tonight at the Dew Drop Inn in honor of the righties, who are so personally offended by the place where EVERYONE knows your name, well except the names of our guests that are hiding out....do you think it would bother them to know that the Dew Drop Inn is NOT so imaginary? And that the new sign was just put in place?

#9.15 - Sat Feb 26, 2011 3:45 PM EST

IR- you want to get misty, try the Brooke Benton verson of Rainy Night....IT'll make you think you are John Boehner or something.

#10 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:53 PM EST

Thanks to our hosts for another fun week on First Read. Have a nice weekend.

I'm headed to the Dew Drop for a boilermaker to toast the workers, and citizens standing in solidarity with them, who are protesting in Wisconsin, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana and tomorrow the protests will be in 61 cities across the midwest--protesters who are fighting a good fight for the rights of every American!

That's right, Steeler Fan, I'll be sitting right next to David Gregory and I won't hesitate to use an elbow to poke him if he doesn't ask Walker and those other GOPTPers some tough questions.

#11.3 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 5:36 PM EST

Jody--you should also take a buzzer and every time anyone resorts to talking the spin instead of really answering the questions, they should get buzzed. Same for any journalist who doesn't pin the politicians down. This applies to either party.

There is a law called the Taft-Hartley act that says No One can be required to join a union.  This comes into play when a person is hired for a union job but does not wish to join the union.  They must still be paid the union wage, and can still be required to pay partial union dues but DO NOT have to join the union.  The employer has to honor all union contractual rules in regards to their employment and they have all the rights and privilages of a union member EXCEPT they cannot vote on union matters.  (They are also not permitted to strike should a union do so).  This is a NATIONAL law - to the idea that people can be forced to join a union to teach is BS.  Right to work doesn't give people the freedom to teach without being in the union - it gives employers the freedom to hire people without having to pay them the union wage.

#17 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 7:53 PM EST

Independent redneck, Always enjoy your posts don't always agree but your right about our prayer's being with the people in New Zealand. It's a beautiful country with wonderful people. Also say a prayer for the people in Libya. Glad this week is over have a drink for me.

#18 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 8:32 PM EST

One more thing the President is Meeting Pres. Calderon this week. I know they will talk about guns and immigration but could the President please make a plee to the American people to stop are insane use of illegal drugs. We are equally responsible for the murder in Mexico. The country's obsession with consuming as many drugs as possible is reprehensible. I have a little place there and the people their are suffering in our little fishing town because of the lack of tourist's. Families that could once afford to pay for education after the 8th can no longer to so. All because American's want more meth, coke, pot, and whatever else. We killing people and we are selfish. It would be better on both sides of the border and for both of our societies.

#19 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 8:51 PM EST

Its hard to believe the government will shunt down and will be cutting millions from many programs that affect the people of the US. On the other side the politicians still will get their cake and eat it to. Along with more of our money going to foreign aid. All the while the people fight amongst themselves over who's fault it is dems or repubs. News flash its both and we are their patsies.

Personally, I would like to hear Eve of Destruction. Love that song. Where does anyone get off vilifying teachers for paying modest union dues to help keep their modest wage. Where are the folks vilifying the banks for fabricating a derivatives market, stealing billions, and then fear mongering the US citizens into paying for the whole mess. Wow! I don't ever remember bailing out a teacher. Don't you start in after the Unions, those "healthcare" and "Food Industry" lobyists are of the most evil nature start with them. Well, you convinced me! Of at least four things.

1) you dont have spellcheck

2) you know how to CAPITALIZE

2) you likely have A D D...

2) you were mis-under-educated by a unionized public school teacher

Bob -

Here's another couple of them -

5.) He has no clue as to how the real world operates.

6.)He thinks posting the same tripe over and over makes it true.

Don't forget, teachers had to pay for 4 years of college just to make that over bloated salary of \$51K.

Most of these guys complaining about teacher pay barely graduated from high school. Maybe that's the problem, deep seeded resentment for "barely passing", since they probably put 0 effort in.

Yep, the Repubs will simply have to "cave in" and allow Harry, Nancy and Obama to SPEND, SPEND, SPEND as, the answer to every left issue is SPEND, SPEND, SPEND.

#25 - Sat Feb 26, 2011 3:17 PM EST

Hmm, let's take a look at that 'spend' meme.

How do businesses get and keep the best people to work for them? They offer them the best compensation and working conditions. In other words: SPEND, SPEND, SPEND.

What government programs offer the highest boost to the economy? Unemployment Insurance and Food Stamps. The money is spent which creates demand, which leads to jobs, which leads to tax revenue. In other words: SPEND, SPEND, SPEND.

What do the Republican/TP Inc. party want to do? CUT, CUT, CUT. Cut UI, cut, Food Stamps, cut every program that helps those who are less fortunate while cutting taxes for the wealthy. Do tax cuts help the economy or create jobs? If they did, where are all those jobs from the Bush tax cuts?

Wait a minute . . . the Republican/TP Inc. party likes to SPEND, SPEND, SPEND too! They like to SPEND, SPEND, SPEND on a war we never should have gotten involved in (Iraq). They like to SPEND, SPEND, SPEND on tax 'refunds' to oil companies who make billions in profits in just 3 months. They like to SPEND, SPEND, SPEND to bail out banks but not ordinary people. They like to take projected budget surpluses and turn them into \$10 Trillion debts.

<begin sarcasm> Yep, it's all Senator Reid, Representative Pelosi and President Obama's fault. <end sarcasm>

Got news for you there, oneman, your Faux Noise, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Frank Luntz talking points are not only wrong, they are also not taken seriously, anymore. In fact, anyone who just comes on here with these off topic talking points with no facts are laughed at as low information right wing foolish people.

Actually Matthew, it was Obama who cut funding from food stamps to pay for union teachers' pensions.
