Broun regrets and condemns violent town hall question

From NBC's Luke Russert and Mark Murray
Georgia Congressman Paul Broun (R) has confirmed that he received this question at a town hall on Tuesday: "Who's going to shoot Obama?"

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, which first reported the news, Broun responded to the question this way: "The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare."

Broun's spokeswoman told the Georgia newspaper: “Obviously, the question was inappropriate, so Congressman Broun moved on.”

Now, after the outburst gained national attention, Broun has issued a statement condemning any suggestion or threat of violence aimed at the president or any other elected official.

Tuesday night at a town hall meeting in Oglethorpe County, Georgia an elderly man asked the abhorrent question, “Who’s going to shoot Obama?” I was stunned by the question and chose not to dignify it with a response; therefore, at that moment I moved on to the next person with a question. After the event, my office took action with the appropriate authorities. I deeply regret that this incident happened at all. Furthermore, I condemn all statements—made in sincerity or jest—that threaten or suggest the use of violence against the President of the United States or any other public official. Such rhetoric cannot and will not be tolerated.

*** UPDATE *** TPM is reporting that, per witnesses, Broun "laughed when an elderly man at his town hall meeting this week asked 'Who's gonna shoot Obama?'"

such respect we have for our leaders these days. Granted I didn't like Bush, but I dont wish physical harm on him. I respect the congressman for standing up for that.

The laughter is FAR more chilling than the comment...

Did I miss the 'punch line'?

Why are these Teapublicans always playing 'defense' when it comes to this kind of thing?

Rep. Broun should have taken control of the situation at the time it happened!

His response at the time was feeble and thinly veiled as to not OFFEND his 'base'!

I have never seen more disrespect for the leader of our country in a long time. And guess who it is coming from. TP showing signs of Obama with Hitler mustaches and in tribal clothes because he's "not from here". The most offensive thing I've seen about Bush is (GASP) facts that show what a terrible president he was.

The question about an Obama shooter was disgusting and horribly disrespectful to say the least. Having said that (and meant it) I have to comment on this quote,

"The most offensive thing I've seen about Bush is (GASP) facts that show what a terrible president he was."

It's possible that you didn't see (or perhaps just didn't notice) the truly ugly images of and things said about Bush. I didn't see 90% until after he was out of office myself and I didn't like the guy but Bush was certainly portrayed with targets on his head and nazi/Hilter imagery quite often.

I'm no conservative. I'm just sayin...

You can use the adjectives "closed-minded," "foolish," "irrational," "money-grubbing," or any of a long list of bad qualities. White and male are irrelevant. Don't forget, they are also the party that gave us Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, and Michael Steele, who are scarier than many of the white males in the GOP.

the movies were made in Britain by British producers. Hollywood left? British left more like it. And as Ive said before, I don't condone the threats no matter who they are against. And lets look at when the protests occured. The dramatic threats against Bush were done much later in his presidency, after we were sent to unnecessary war and 911 happened. Death threats were out for Obama before he even officially took office.

I heard a soundbite this morning of one of the union protesters in Wisconsin. threatening a reporter with sexual assault and physical harm. We need to stand up against all hate speech and to generalize that is all coming from only one side is unrealistic and naive and only adds to the problem.

Feisty,

You should learn a little about human response to situations before condemning the congressman for a laugh. The fact is that it is an inborn human reaction to a situation. If someone threw a similar unexpected question at you and it took a moment for you to compose yourself, you would do the same thing.

As to his response to the question; it was a non-response and exactly what the question deserved.

how about those 2 movies made from the hollywood left

It always amazes me that when the violent rhetoric of the talibanic tea party is exposed, many suddenly go into damage control and try to dig up some weak comparison, somewhere, somehow. What movies are you talking about? How do you know that the producers were lefties? How do you know that they specifically meant it as a threat to Bush? Why would this make you feel better about a tea party member asking for the assassination of the president?

I think the hateful rhetoric getting spewed around by the right nearly every day now is finally getting noticed, and the GOP is covering it up by saying "well it happened to Bush" sure, it did, and thats not good in any sense, but if you look at when these protests happened, the Bush ones happened later in his presidency, after the country realized how much he had screwed up the country financially and led us into a war that was not necessary. Obama was facing death threats and racist bigotry before he even officially went into office.

Enough with this democracy thing anyway. It's about time we shelve because it seems like it's not working. Everytime someone looses they want to change the constitution. Instead of waiting another turn. We need to dump the system since the contention is that some pay into it and nothing back while some get everything from the system and no skin in the game. So let's shelve it and go for it - Like Egypt, Libya etc. Why not?

I am glad Broun has taken a strong stand to denounce the threatened violence but it would have been better IF Broun had called the person to the front of the room and in front of all, said this: that, sir, is inappropriate and now you have an opportunity to apologize to everyone for suggesting violence against any president, democrat or republican.

Yes, there were nasty comments made about Bush; signs at the Iraq war protests that were inappropriate but there were NO democratic legislators embracing that behavior. You did NOT see democrats standing on stages and balconies encouraging the hateful signs and waving their own similar ones, egging on the protesters. But there sure were a lot of republicans right in the middle who never once denounced the lies until forced to adjust their stand by reporters.

The only other people they care about are the people who are donating and funding them. While I agree that what the old dude said was reprehensible, what response should the Congressman have given? Certainly ignoring it was the right thing to do and while laughing at it may seem inappropriate, I'm pretty sure that's the response that most Congressmen would have given. I know if I were in that situation, that probably would have been my reaction, a dismissive laugh and move on. Anything else would have encouraged debate on the subject and made it even more of a story than the press is making it now.

The person who made that statement should be investigated by the Secret Service. There is no place for comments like that in a civilized society.

The congressman should have denounced it, and has. Should he have come out more strongly at the event?

Well, maybe- but I wonder if he was too stunned to do anything more than move on. I might have been. He might also have had the presence of mind to be cautious in a crowded public venue with someone of that mindset.

So, now that we have all weighed in against such vile rhetoric, I wonder if any of you would care to spare a few words of condemnation for the New York democratic representative who, two days ago, called for people to "get out in the streets and get bloody" in reference to union protests?

As for the comment by Wyo Lib "after the country realized how much he had screwed up the country financially" I simply have a singular question. Who was in control of the Congress and Senate? I find it interesting that most Americans have no idea as to how the government works. The Congress and the Senate set the budget and spending. The President is merely a rubber stamp. If he chooses to veto a majority in both houses can override the veto. The majority of Bush's second term had a Democrat controlled majority. The question that should be asked here is If the Democrats controlled the legislative branch why didn't they do something about it? The answer is simple. Politics. You can win more elections with blame than with the truth, and boy did they blame Bush (even though their votes passed it all). Both sides are crooked. The only resolution is setting term limits to keep the lifetime politicians out on both sides. The House and Senate were not founded with the idea of lifetime jobs. we were supposed to have "citizen representatives" that served a term and went home.

I think its disgusting to make any such comment about any sitting president. I have no doubt that the Secret Service has their crosshairs on that guy. I have to remind you all that as many remarks have been made about assasinating Bush by the lefties as there are Obama. The arguement about Canada's universal healthcare is a moot point. Obamacare as it is called is not universal healthcare, it is legislation that required the individual to have healthcare. It was either to be provided by the individual or their employer. Either way, it is a far cry and a poor substitute for Canada's healthcare. What the American public hate the most about that piece of legislation is the manner at which it was passed and the secrecy of its content. You can never convince me that "we have to pass it to see whats in it". Thats a pretty covert statement in itself for a administration who is supposed to be promoting transparency in government.

Additionally, had he said that, he would have been all over the news quoted as saying that shooting the President was "a little over the top". The Congressman was put in a tough position and I believe he handled in the best possible way.

    Steve

You just aren't getting any smarter are you. The government has absolutely no say about the price of oil/gasoline outside of how it's taxed. That tax money goes into the upkeep of our infrastructure. (Hope that isn't too big of a word for you). The only way the government could make it cheaper is to provide a $1.00 a gallon subsidy. Now THAT would have your knickers in a major twist.

Do you think that the GOPTP could make it cheaper? I want what you're smoking buddy.

Um, Stevie-o you do realize President Obama has accomplished more than any President since FDR?

There is an e-mail with a list of legislative accomplishments, including healthcare reform, financial regulatory reform, the stimulus, the auto bailouts and the repeal of the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, among others.

The committee also released a report titled "Promises Kept" that reviews Obama's first two years in office.

Most T-baggers are more than homophobic; they are Negrophobic, Islamophobic, xenophobic, and just a about the most vile strata in American society.

No matter how you try to pump up the contribution of minorities to our country ( because blacks got a month of their own in the calender ) you're just pandering , the white people founded, developed and still are the overwhelmingly greatest contributors to the richness of this country, and the world for that matter. Not being racist, just factual if your really honest with yourself.

Sparky : As to his response to the question; it was a non-response and exactly what the question deserved.

Well, actually it WASN'T a non-response. To answer that he understood the frustration and to talk about the hope that Obama would be out in 2012 IS a response. It's dishonorable of him to later make the statement that he didn't dignify the question with a response when he did. The correct thing to have done is to make a polite statement to the effect of "Sir, I really don't think it's appropriate to suggest that ANYONE shoot a President"

To everyone who is trying to make it equal....first I will concede there have been private citizens on the left who have been too extreme in vilifying Bush and/or talking violence in the past and that it's no more okay than when it comes from the right. However.....I am putting out a challenge to show me where Democratic Congress-people (state or federal level) have engaged in the sort of either outright encouragement of violence or implicitly going along with a wink and a nod against a fellow elected official that we have seen from elected officials on the right. Enough is enough already.

Johnny N. and Rachel Maddow's crazy ole "Uncle Pat Buchanan on MSNBC are 2 RACIST; PERIOD!!!

You know, there's always someone who'll point out that it's not fair that there's a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, when a National Association for the Advancement of White People would be decried as racist. But you know what? There is a National Association for the Advancement of White People! We just pronounce it, "TROUBLED ASSET RELIEF PROGRAM."

Seems that ole crazy Uncle Pat has this notion...

      [snip]

"White men were 100% of the people that wrote the Constitution, 100% of the people that signed the Declaration of Independence, 100% of the people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, probably close to 100% of the people who died at Normandy. This has been a country built basically by white folks, who were 90% of the nation in 1960 when I was growing up and the other 10% were African-Americans who had been discriminated against. That's why.

And what were all those black people doing at the time when heroic white people were setting about the important business of founding this great nation of ours? You guessed it! Hanging around fields, picking cotton, like bone idle jerks! None of that ever contributed anything to the common weal, of course! I mean, what is "cotton?" Not exactly THE FABRIC OF OUR LIVES, right?

BTW: Benjamin Banneker was a self-educated scientist, astronomer, inventor, writer, and antislavery publicist. He built a striking clock entirely from wood, published a Farmers' Almanac.

In late February 1792, President George Washington dismissed L'Enfant, who had failed to have his plan published and who was experiencing frequent conflicts with the three Commissioners that Washington had appointed to supervise the planning and survey of the federal district and city.[59][60][61]

Benjamin Banneker "The Man Who Saved Washington" and "An Early American Hero"

According to a Banneker legend, L'Enfant took his plans with him after his dismissal, leaving no copies behind. As the story is told, Banneker spent two days reconstructing the bulk of the city's plan from his presumably photographic memory. According to the story, the plans that Banneker purportedly drew from memory provided the basis for the later construction of the federal capital city.

      Steve,

You realize that gas went up under Bush because of the lack of regulation in the speculation markets and that it is going up this time at least in part because of events in the middle east, right? The speculative markets are still contributing and it is too bad the Republicans delayed all legislation for 2 years so that we could not get to reforming this sector. Alsop, much of the timing for this situation in the Middle east is a result of commodities trading in this country on foodstuffs. Especially the ability to speculate on production that will never exist. Explain that one to me.

I would love Obama to address this issue and am disappointed that he has not. But there is not a snowballs chance in hell that it can be addressed now.

And this is off topic. It is about a man advocating assassination of the President of the United States to a member of Congress. It is not about the Presidents policies.

      Johnny N.,

I missed the part where your great white ancestors did their own heavy lifting, baby rearing, landmark constructing, agricultural reapings, railroad building, etc.

I did, however, catch the part where Jamestown nearly became a Ghosttown because European agricultural techniques didn't quite work in the North American environment, how white indentured servants were ill-equiped to labor on Carribean, Southern, Southwestern, North Eastern plantations and farms without substantial assistance from many "minority" groups that were themselves either slaughtered, subjugated, economically and socially restricted by legal mandate, or outright deported to suit majority white sentiment.

I also caught that part in history where Europeans, whose sense of racial and cultural superiority stem from their luck of being descended from protohumans who happened to settle near rich sources of nutrition, beasts of burden, and cultural exchange (i.e. "the fertile crescent"), built a country on the notions of freedom, equality, and inalienable rights but then spent the subsequent years picking and choosing who they felt God ultimately blessed with such (funny how inalienable rights are alienable when it suits the majority paranoia (see Japanese-American Internment Camps in the 1940s or Mexican-American forced deportation in the 1930s).

Maybe instead of patting yourself on the back for your lucky draw of genetics you should be crowing about how 500 years of social advantage, privilege, and headstart still amounted to virtually dick in the long run as all those races you look down upon still seemed to surpass you locally and globally.

This guy should be sought out for what he said. Broun was clearly caught off guard by the question. Which his released statement afterward s clearly says he does not support or condone those types of comments. If you cannot see that you better go back and finish your education and get you high school diploma.

After reading through this thread, it is perfectly clear that none of these comments amount to a hill of beans. All of the lib's are taking their jabs and in-sighting more violence. For those of you who are willing to oblige.

WOW I personally can stand either you Lib's or Conservatives. You both are so far out of touch with reality. Do something go to both Media matters or MSNBC take some of their stories then go to FOX and do the same. Now go and research both yourself. There is way more hate speech coming from the left lately just with less media coverage "and yes if you want links I will give them to you". For some reasons the far left has to call the tea party racist's. They have had racist get into there group and have also kicked them out. I can so you a link of some libs being racists as hell at a recent state employee rally. Then you have the gull to say they are the ones using hate speech while your posts are FILLED with teabagger this and that. Take a look at yourselves right will have crazy birthers and the left has their crazy truthers. Both far left and far right have people that support them with views not expressed by the group's. You saying teaparty people are racist while this week there have been tons of signs from the left showing Rep's as hilter and nazi's. You cant see past your own vialness in this issue serious go back and read your post. Look at both sides media coverage and research yourself you might be surprised. I can post tons of links showing the left as not shown by MSNBC but then again I think and research for myself. Go back and read your post's. Why don't you take a look at not only state budget rallies but go back and look at coverage for immigration rallies you might be shocked at what you see, you should be ashamed. Heck I'm ashamed just reading your vial post. By the way folks there is a huge difference between public and private unions. Its amazing none of you are mentioning the speech and racist remarks and signs at these rally's..

Don't get me wrong I tend to agree with you on the intelligence thing voted against him twice and Obama once. Seriously though it was more rampant from the left during the Bush era. Neither is acceptable just don't pretend its something new and from the right.

Beverly and Louis were to begin. Really do a little research yourself. I personally cant stand the liberal agenda as the same goes for the Tea party agenda. I do recognize you both deserve to have your view represented. You neither represent the majority. You should look at the demographic for the Tea party older and more educated no matter how full of themselves the Liberals want to pretend they are by selective highlighting certain ones. Yes you have a few racist the came in with a sign but to associate the whole group with that is insane. I can supply you with just as many links of racism and violent signs at the left rallies so are you all racist. Cant believe you even try to pretend your the tolerant side do a little looking. Here's an exercise go look up your news on MSNBC and the Huffington Post then go look at the news on the FOX news website. They are all extremely bias toward their political affiliation. Now take that info from both sides and go look it up yourself. What you find is both groups of news will only tell you what they want you to see with their views and the other will show you what the other wont. Go look at the union rallies, immigration rallies talk about ill-mannered,intolerant and violent. This is why both the far left and far right disgust me you both only believe what you want and are in total denial about yourselves.

Since I know you probably wont here are a few to get you started. Yes you can find them on the right I just figured you already had that covered. Just don't act like this doesn't happen on both sides. Don't pretend you cant find racist in your group. Does that make your group racist?

        SickOfTheBickering,

"Unfortuntely a conservative can never do enough to satisfy a liberal..."

Really? Okay...name one thing Obama has done for which a single conservative has ever given him credit - just one single freaking thing he's done that hasn't been torn down, criticized, or spit on by the rabid right. Do that, and make your statement look just a tad less like it's the product of a hypocritical, whining victim mentality.

Good post Rich. Don't hold your breath waiting for a response. The regulars on this board are often quite extreme and with this series of posts today, displaying their bias. Perhaps a bit of racism. Of course since it is First Read, stage one liberal slant, you will not find much balance in the reporting. However the commentary is comedy.

Had complete control of the Senate (Before Brown won Mass) and the House for 18 months...Did not need 1 Republican

Please get your facts right. The senate had 99 members for most of the time prior to Brown being sworn in. From Coleman"s stalling the seating of Franken to Kennedy's death there were 59 members in the Democratic caucus. 59 is one short of overriding the filibuster strategy of every piece of legislation used by the 40 Republicans. Do you really think Coleman spent all that money contesting the election results because he thought he might win?

          Too little, too late.

Braun (one of the most extremist members of the House and prone to over blown and incendiary rhetoric on many occasions) only stepped up to condemn this after it started receiving very negative national attention (and probably only after Speaker Boehner's office leaned on him to stop the embarrassment).

Instead of laughing at the outrageous remark and ignoring it, a responsible public official would have delivered a clear message along the lines of "No matter how much we disagree with the President or any other official, we live in a democracy where we settle our differences at the ballot box, not through assassination. The events of Tucson show up the tragic consequences when people take their passionate disagreements out with violence instead of dialogue." It speaks volumes about Rep. Braun's character that he couldn't bring himself to cough up something along those lines and instead choose to giggle at the remark and move on without challenging it.

Excellent response...too bad the elected representative didn't see fit to go there. This is not a surprise, I have heard the same type of comments too many times (I, too, live in a southern state) and it IS racism...this isn't a disagreement with his policies, it is a call to violence and it won't stop until some nutjob who is encouraged by this type of talk (ie Tuscon) either attempts or succeeds in assasinating our duly elected President.

But he didn't JUST giggle. He responded that he understood the man's frustration! That is NOT a non-response. It is a totally irresponsible response by an elected official toward someone who is making a theoretically threatening statement against the President. Just like you can't joke about bringing a bomb on board an airplane without consequences, you can't "joke" about shooting a President without consequences....or at least you shouldn't be able to in a sane country.

And I will challenge yet again to all those Conservatives wanting to rant about it being EQUAL on both sides. Show me where an ELECTED Democrat either incited violence or condoned it, either through a response or a supposed non-response. You won't find one. You can't do much about crazy private citizens making unnecessary, violent remarks but it's only o the Republican side where elected officials take these type comments and don't call them out immediately.

Where was everyone when Liberals called for Bush's assassination?

Before this gets out of control - it was NOT the liberals calling for Bush's assassination!

CHAPPAQUA — Sen. Hillary Clinton this morning blasted the producers of a new film depicting the assassination of Pres. George W. Bush.

"I think it's despicable," Clinton said of "Death of a President," a fictional film that features a staged assassination of the president in 2007. "I think it's absolutely outrageous. That anyone would even attempt to profit on such a horrible scenario makes me sick."

          http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2515157

          It was British film-makers:

Channel 4 is set to spark a furore in the US this month when it unveils a documentary-style film in which George Bush is assassinated.

Set in October 2007, the 90-minute drama uses a mix of archive footage, computer generated imagery and documentary techniques to portray Bush's assassination and America's reaction to it. Death of a President, which will also headline the Toronto film festival, will be seen first in this country on sister channel More 4 before being repeated on the main channel.

There are two possibilities here; you are either an outright liar or you're stupidly repeating lies you've heard. Much as liberals (and the few thinking conservatives still left) denounce his performance, no one called for the assassination of Bush or Cheney. In fact, political assassinations are the exclusive province of the Right Wing. I believe you call that 2nd Amendment Rights.

In actuality, the fact that we are even having this discussion shows what a violent and eff'd up state of mind we have in this country. I remember the rhetoric about Bush, the signs and whatnot. I think what sparked a lot of it was that his decisions were killing people all around the world. I'm not saying that justifies the rhetoric, but when you start a couple of wars you're going to get threats and stir up emotions.

This President hasn't started any wars, hasn't infringed on any country's sovereignty, etc but the die has already been cast that it is somewhat acceptable to threaten our public officials with violence. It's flat out disgusting and that man at that townhall meeting should have been arrested on the spot for conspiracy.

This country is on a downward spiral, not from it's leaders but from this polarized mentality that any ONE of is better than the other. When you start thinking for yourself and not being told what to think you will find that we all have a lot more in common than we are told we do.

Let's face it there were not nearly as many death threats on Bush as there are on President Obama. Would you care to google that fact? In fact, Bush was well cordoned off. Free speech zones (also known as First Amendment Zones, Free speech cages, andProtest zones) are areas set aside in public places for political activists to exercise their right of free speech in the United States.

We should NOT be talking about shooting anyone, even in jest. I have seen several here posting that the rhetoric and hate speech are a major problem on both sides and causing huge splits in the populace. I did not like Bush, but wouldn't wish him dead...just out of office. It seems opinion is somehow now fact and I can beat you up if you don't agree with me. Politicians look at much of this and allow it to continue because it's all about being re-elected and not about governing. If you point your finger at any one person and claim "here is the root of all our problems" you have issues with over-simplification. Fear abounds and race, religion, liberal, conservative are all watch words for hate speech. Before you use "nazi", "terrorist"...any of the terms you find in the news today, take a good long look at just what that means. You cannot be a nazi and a communist at the same time folks. And, throwing words around have consequences...everyone needs to realize, as much as you may be sick of hearing it, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER, and that means we must find ways to improve our lot...not just for certain parts of society, but for all. Otherwise, we can expect to be a 3rd world country some day in the future. Not what I want my grandkids to inherit...I want an improving country, gowing ideas and promoting higher education...and that there will be jobs for skilled and talented people.

To ask when or who might shoot anyone, let alone the President or members of the government, says that much is wrong in our society today. Pointing fingers, calling names, bending the truth...all this must stop so that we can right our ship and move forward. 2nd Amendment solutions are not solutions; we have no tolerance for any opinion other than our own. Opinion, not facts. Because facts are found with multiple sources...not just the left or right usual spots on tv or the web. Ah, and just because you heard it on tv, on the web, in the barber shop...does not make it true. We seem unable to eduate ourselves...we prefer to believe the lies.

It's not a question of 2nd amendment solutions. It a question concerning the polarized rhetoric of our politics. If we didn't have a 2nd amendment and guns were outlawed, some dumb@ss jackhole would still make a stupid remark. Some criminal would still have a gun. Idiots and criminals have always existed and will probably never go extinct. This is not an American problem, look at Lybia. Are you sure there is no one over there saying "who's gonna shoot Gadhafi"? I am not comparing Obama to Gahdafi. There is definaltely a contrast. I think we give too much attention to the nutjobs as it encourages them to continue and multiply. I'm not saying that we don't need to keep an eye on them, but to devote an entire news feature to them. Maybe if we make the attention they get a good waterboarding. That would be a great deterent.

AP No one was defending threatening the assassination of our President. But we all shouldn't be closing our eyes to threats on ANYONE by either side. I have seen numerous comments on here where the poster was saying Bush deserved it blah, blah, blah. He was a war criminal, etc... You need to condemn violence against anyone.

You know what I find very funny. The fact that everyone on here is biased in some way or another. No one can give an actual opinion without criticising another. Our country has definetly gone to @!$%#. Especially if everyone is talking like this. As to the "question" that was said, It's not right that anyone would say something like that whether it's a government rep or regular citizen. Do you have any idea how many times I personally have heard that question said? Way too many to count. It's not right and should be punished. It's treason. Our President, whether Black, white, or whatever race they all are doesn't really matter, does it? It rediculous how racist our country has become.

thats why fox is no. I rated cable news they tell both sides and are not afraid of the union paid dems who control thier party, think back when the tea partiers were holding rallies ,if there was a hitler sign spotted the tea party people made them take them down but all the dem staions blasted it all over the news , where are they now when every other protester is holding a sign with hitler=the gov. or replicans want people dead, I guess they are hideing with thier cowardly senators.

How can you have respect for acting leaders in the United States when their trying to destroy this nation with all their rich corporation and CEO buddies. Both Democrats and Republicans are doing this. The only one I would consider voting for president is Vermont's Senator Bernie Sanders!

Neither Bush or Cheney can go anywhere in this world. They are both wanted for war crimes and people want them prosecuted.

Bush can't even go promote his book in Sweden where they threatened to demonstrate and protest against him. Of course his ego couldn't handle that. His crowds were picked for him and coached on which questions people were allowed to ask. All very carefully planned so as not to allow the world to see how many people despised and despise him. During the election a woman told McCain that Obama was a Muslim, to his credit and what this guy should have done was address the question with a direct answer, then direct the SS to arrest this guy.

Mccan told this woman that Obama is a christin, he has prayed with Obama, the answer drew a boo from the crowd but it was the right thing to do.

What gets up my nose is the weak response from elected Republican politiicians when asked by reporters if they think Obama is a Christian, or born in this country, etc and they say things like "well, I take him at his word," or "I'm not going to tell people what to think." You NEVER hear Republican leaders seriously stand up to the nut-jobbers in their Party. Just ONCE I'd like to hear one of them say "people who spread unfounded rumors against the President are un-American."

Too little Too Late Congressman. You only walked it back when it was pointed out to you how badly you and your staff handled it. This was my original post on First Thoughts:

By Blake Aued - Athens Banner-Herald

                      Published February 23rd, 2011

At Rep. Paul Broun's town hall meeting on Tuesday, the Athens congressman asked who had driven the farthest to be there and let the winner ask the first question.

We couldn't hear the question in the back of the packed Oglethorpe County Commission chamber, but whatever it was, it got a big laugh. According to an outraged commenter on the article, the question was, when is someone going to shoot Obama?

I've asked Team Broun whether that was indeed the question and haven't gotten an answer. The commenter accurately described the questioner and the circumstances, and no one has disputed his account.

Update: Broun's press secretary, Jessica Morris, confirmed that the question was indeed, who is going to shoot Obama? "Obviously, the question was inappropriate, so Congressman Broun moved on," she said.

                      Here was Broun's response:

The thing is, I know there's a lot of frustration with this president. We're going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we'll elect somebody that's going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

He then segued into Republicans' budget proposal.

                      ________________________________________________________________________________

It is a Federal crime to threaten the life of a President, and Congressman Broun's attitude is let's move on. " INAPPROPRIATE," says his Press Secretary. It is amazing that a US Congressman or someone on his staff would not know that it is a crime, or at the very least, tell the questioner it is unacceptable and wrong to talk like that.

This is another example of GOP/TP leaders who lack the moral and testicular courage to denounce anyone asking a question with such implications. We can only hope no one got any ideas from this outrageous question and that the USSS will pay a visit to find out exactly what is on the questioner's mind.

The ignorance displayed by some posters regarding my original post earlier is just that ignorant. Some think it is an amusing topic, imagine that, it is 'funny' to ask or suggest when a sitting, duly elected President will be shot. We are in deep trouble. I hope the US Secret Service pays a visit to some of these misguided and 'sick' individuals.

"Regret" is a lame response to the question asked in his town hall. The rep isn't responsible for the questions he's asked, but he IS responsible for his response to them. Condemming it would have been more appropriate. If there had been Secret Service around, the guy would have been pulled aside and questioned vigerously. Why do people elect this kind of buffoon who doesn't even know how to act appropriately in this kind of situation?

The sad thing is that those in power DO know how to respond to those kind of comments. Unfortunately, America being how it is, has drawn such a line of division, that people like Broun don't care enough to curtail such ignorant behavior. If we look at the majority of comments left regarding this post, we will see that it has become moreof a battle over whether Democrats or Republicans make the most violent statments. The topic at hand should be the fact that the statement was made and it should be condemned by anyone with any sense. Regardless of political, cultural or racial backgrounds, we are all American. We should not be fighting over who has said the most disturbing comment. We should be in agreement that saying something that imflammatory about anyone in such a high profile position is irresponsible and utterly stupid!

Broun's "Slience" spoke volumes and no amount of monday morning quarter backing can remove his response to the most vile crime of the leader of this country. One does not have to think how to respond to such a question, it's a matter of "Character" which is obvious Mr. Broun does not have.

Republicans have suceeded in doing what none before them have done, "Awaken A Sleeping Giant" The American Peole" Finally and long overdue after this mean bitter display by our so called leaders and you have to call them so called becaus they are not leaders. Our children have seen the worst display of Non-Leadership in our country since it's beginning.....

We are paying Mr. Broun and other in congress $176,000 A Year of our the "Taxpayers Money" yet he and others stand and talke about how "Government Is Bad" screaming like little kids in a candy store that act out because they cannot get their way.................................

Yet these people are the first to get on the government Payroll all the while Lying to The American people about how Government is Bad while they Ride the Government Gravy Train

This strategy is designed to pitch Americans against each other while these folks Place the Rich in charge and little do those who agree with these mean spritied tactics know the future will be The Rich vs. The Poor, the Haves vs. the Have Nots

These are the people who Villified our Teachers, the very teachers who are responsible for them to have the Jobs they have today, yet they are determined that our kids won't receive the education they need by villifying teachers so that the good teachers leave and they turn our Public Schools into Private Schools

Those families who have thrown away their interest rather than get to the issues to protect their families futures have no idea that they will not fare well should this country be changed to the Haves vs. the Have Nots

These folks are villfying our Police Officers who put their lives on the line everyday to protect us

They are bllfying our Firefighers who put their lives on the line to Save our homes and forrest

They are now villifiying Unions who are responsible for ensuring that even "Private Employees" have silent gargining rights because those employers know they cannot just walk over their employees because there's an organization who actually stands up for the working people in this country

The New Jersey Gov. Christi stood up and "laughed at the Elderly and our SIck Old People" your moms, dads, uncles, cousins etc he actually said

Gov. Christy, said something to the effect of "I said Cut Social Security and I'm Still Standing, the earth didn't move, and his audience broke out with a laugh"

These folk use the word "Entitlements" to fool the American People they will not say Retirement Benefits for Old Americans, they won't tell you that the Government has been borrowing from the Social Security funds for "Decades" even the Wall Street Journal acknowledged it, USA today also saying that our money that we have been giving for years has been used and is being used to build roads, bridges, public use

The problem is isn't that "Stealing" from hard working Americans? Just how much has been borrowed for the decades that everyone admits"? How much has been paid back? How much do they owe us?

Most important why should working Americans have to pay back money that the GOvernment Borrowed for decades and continue to do so

Americans wake up, we must have an accounting of our money that money was gauranteed to us, we paid for those benefits, that's why it's called an "Entitlement"

Less make sure the Congress who are making it their life's work to "Steal From Old Americans and Sick Americans call this fund exactly what it is a Fund For Old Americans that they have paid into for 30-40 years and some still paying

Congress was aware of this situation when they gave $1 Trillion Dollars to the Rich

Now they are coming back on the backs of working Americans asking us to Replace the $1 Trillion dollars they gave the Rich

All this bickering among each other is a great distraction while congress has fast become the Play for Pay congress.

                          These folk are Millionaires

If Government shuts down Congress will still get their $176,000 Taxpayer Salaries

Walker in Wisconsin, the unions have agreed, yet he is now planning to lay off folk why? He is getting the money!

Republicans, Republicans ran to every camera when they campaigned on JOBs, JOBs, JOBs, JOBs, yet they have done everything but be work on 1 bill to create jobs..................................

Something is very wrong with this pricture.

Republicans have cleverly distracted some, most in the media they have forgotten about the Millions of Americans without Jobs, homes, Transportation, living in shelters

Isn't it time that we make these people who continue to lie keep their word

This is not about being a Republican, Democrat or an Independent folks because this is all designed to Divide and Conquer.

If Republicans win this fight in their new shinny goal "Demolishing Workers Rights" whether you are Union or private you can expect the following

                          Lower wages

No pensions, Employers quietly removed pensions for millions of Americans and the Media and we stood still, for years all good Employers provided Pensions not in the form of 401Ks

Working conditions like those in sweat shops

Workers will have little respect employers will be exactly that "at will" you at their will

Hopefully as Americans we are standing together in this fight at least those Americans who really understand what's at steak and those of us who are not caught up in party Politics

In the end, party affiliation doesn't matter if you children will be dummer because they cannot get the quality education you received when we valued our teachers

Quality Police Officers decide is it worth it? Place my life on the line for congress and Governors who villify us?

Firefighters quality one sincere and hard working walk away and leave the job to those in it for the money

Teachers just say NO and walk away from the profession, because the lesson being delivered to our College Students now is don't go into the Teaching Profession because we don't need you to give our children an education

Why isn't teaching the highest paid Job in this country? After all who would have the Job they have now if not for them?

Forget Party, Be an American and less stand tall and speak up. We don't need the President to come calling on every issue that affects us. He's got one million things on his plate

It's time Americans stood up for Americans

Employers are successful becaue of the American People a Job cannot be done by itself?

Will the vitriol ever end against one of the one President who thinks before he runs at the mouth? We as Americans are doomed if we do not support Obama & his hope and dreams for this country & its people. I for one am greatful that hedoes not run at the mouth or shoot from the hip in times when things need to be thought through. Those of our fellow countrypeople who would pose a question to the Georgia congressman like that & Congressman who laugh at the question are as guilty of hatred & worthy of disgust & dishonor as the Saudi wouldbe terrorist going to school in Texas to learn bomb making. Where else can this happen? Not in the America I want for me & mine. It is time for All Americans to come to the Aid of this country & support our chosen President despite the birthers, TPers & distractors of a better America.

June, FL, thank you for your excellent summary of the situation we face in America. We must, as Americans, move beyond the hatemongering, political gimmickry, and character assassinations. The President was fairly elected by the people, as were the Republicans during the midterms. Now they must stop the political posturing and debate the real and serious issues that face our nation and the world. We expect them to disagree on some things and hopefully agree on others. We also expect them to seek a middle ground and do what is right for the American people. That is called compromise which is the only way our democracy will survive. That, by the way, is how collective bargaining works. It should be maintained and strengthened whenever it is assaulted by any groups who want to seize power from we, the people!

A steady diet of Rush Limbaugh, and his company, will push people over the edge. I know he's just an entertaininer making a buck, as the saying goes, but these people take him literally, and they're looking for scapegoats to blame for their own miseries. I'd be more interested in hearing him condemn this old man's words than Broun.

It's simply amazing the naivity in the republican party. Do you really believe that your one of them when your only making under 100k a year. They're just telling you what you want to hear! The facts are there. The rich are getting richer and the middle class poorer. Every corporation is charging more and more for their services while quarterly profits are skyrocketing. They make you work more hours a week for less pay. I guess the people with intelegence deserve to go down with them because we don't stand up and fight (figure of speech). Had to explain that to the naive one's or they would probably think I'm referring to fighting GB and DK. Figure it out people! Oh yeah, and by the way, what the old idiot said is outrageous. I thought I'd better ad that so the naive one's couldn't say that I wasn't staying with the subject!

Anyone who has read about our former Presidents knows the type of language that's being lobbed at President Obama is nothing new.

If you pick any former President that had any sort of controversy during their administration you'll find folks spewing all kinds of hatred.

This, my friends, is just another example of why education is important.

I want our President to be successful and continue to support him 100%. But I can't get upset by the language that's used towards him....it's just more of the same....from both sides of the aisle. Study some history and you'll know we (and he) should take this in stride and concentrate on the important issues facing us.

Yes, we all understood that the Bush/Cheney years were criminal and our own lawmakers are not going after them. Some Presidents truly earned the hate and mistrust for all the killing, but America keeps silent.

The problem is this goes beyond language. Yes, there has been alot of negative things said to every leader...there are always those who disagree and don't know how to get their point across without getting stupid (see a few posts above). However, it is illegal and irresponsible to make comments about shooting the President of the United States, especially in a public meeting. There was alot of anger and disrespect from the left about GWB, but there was NOT this type of violence and absolute HATRED for all things democratic and especially President Obama.

He knows his constituents are nothing bunch of racists and he panders to them.

I’m proud to be here with people who understand that it’s more than just sending an email to get you going," Capuano said, according to theStatehouse News. "Every once and awhile you need to get out on the streets and get a little bloody when necessary."

On Wednesday afternoon, Capuano issued a brief apology: "I strongly believe in standing up for worker rights and my passion for preserving those rights may have gotten the best of me yesterday in an unscripted speech. I wish I had used different language to express my passion and I regret my choice of words."

Do you see how immediately sincere he was? Bruno could have done the same.

Besides, if you had read the article objectively you would have seen it was in response to the hateful t-baggers being bussed in. Who knows before that prank call the T-baggers may have been instructed to start something.

No one should even joke about assassination of the President. It is not funny, it is not productive. I remember when JFK was assassinated, and believe me, it was a sad day for the United States. Anyone who does should be immediately prosecuted for saying it. Politicians who make or support such careless remarks should at least be censured, Regardless of how you feel about the POTUS, at least respect the office. Remember, he won the election, therefore he represents the people, even if you personally don't like his politics.

I don't believe that these spineless republicans and teaparty parrots earned the vote. They were given millions by secret (DavidKoch) donors and the ads paid for by the party were filled with lies. How is this winning when they won that way. The American people are losers every time. They cheated and won and now they move forward to spread hate and misinformation. I will withhold from saying the pledge of allegiance like I have since Bush/Cheney took office.

                                  Dale,

Saying a pledge of allegiance is not about the president. Its about our country and your belief and striving to protect it, your allegiance to your country. What you are saying is that you have no allegiance to your country? As far as the ads, there are lies from both sides. Bold bald face lies. The problem now is that special interest who cannot contribute to campaigns now make up their own ads to support their agenda. The lies will always be there and you will have to be smart enough to weed through them. It will never end until there is a level playing field with only the candidates party, platform, and followers with limited campaign funds (no donors). No special interest advertising. That would force the candidates to address the issues and their approach. No BS or trash talk, and a heck of a lot less commercials.

                                    Good luck with THAT! lol

Bush was such a diplomat and would never think of blowing anything up? That very act puts us in the third world class in mentality and economically we are getting there too. Under the Bush years academic scores dropped on exams BELOW the level of some third world countries. The biggest thing this country has is egos and guns neither of which are going to get you to far in a world order.

zdcdoc. I think the problem is President Obama actually graduated from Harvard Law and went on to EARN a Doctorate (JD). American Presidents shouldn't have Doctorates.

Again, instead of universally condemning this type of rhetoric the majority of posts are one sided finger pointing at the other guy.

It's wrong whether it's against a republican, a democrat, an independent, or a PERSON.

Last time I checked murder was still illegal regardless of which side of the fence you are on. This country used to have a middle road with some rational thought but now we are divided on anything and everything. Threatening or even suggesting the murder of ANY individual should still go against all moral values if there are any left. Many like to call the "period" of moving into socialism but in relality when you start talking about murdering an individual does that not but you in the territory of extremist say like a terorist. I this incredible behavior continues in this country we will have lowered ourselves to the same countries we are trying to be "democracy" to. In this country if you do not get your way there is a growng and alarming number of society that says well just shoot him or destroy him. It has turned into a national sport and one I for one am not impressed with. For the record I am a very middle of the road type which can see good and bad on either side. I don't like the lumping of groups into liberals or conservatives. It serves no purpose other than to divide.

Welcome to the era of hate media that constantly infects their listeners with some very extremist brainwashing. Just think back to Father Charles Coughlin and his very popular radio show during the 30s. On that show he demonstrated tons of hate towards Jews, and he had an audience of some 20 million listeners who loved him. This is why in places like England, Michael Savage was banned.

These people are liars.. Congress and pres... Banning radio shows in England is peachy but here it's illegal, as it should be.. Tired of politically correct. To all those who feel hurt from others opinions go to the Yellowpages.. Psychotherapists... Pay someone to care about your feelings. I care about my National Security, Constitutional Rights (Not Opinion), and this Nation..

David, you clearly don't have a clue. Clinton left a surplus and you want to defend the GOP? But, that's totally off subject anyway. The correct answer to such a questions would have been something like "I cannot believe you actually asked such a question. There is no place for that kind of attitude in America and I am offended that you believe this is a forum where such a sentiment can be expressed. " Then they should have had the man escorted out the door - or to the nearest police station.

A poor judgement joke akin to yelling fire in a crowded theater when there is no fire. Broun's response is the problem.
