Obama agenda: Fighting the GOP governors

Writing about the GOP governors who are challenging the Obama White House – more than ever challenged Bill Clinton in the 1990s -- National Journal’s Ron Brownstein writes, “Whatever the governors’ motivations (one man’s posturing, after all, is another man’s principle), their unreserved enlistment into Washington’s wars marks a milestone. It creates a second line of defense for conservatives to contest Obama even after he wins battles in Congress. It tears another hole in the fraying conviction that state capitals are less partisan than Washington. And it creates a precedent that is likely to encourage more guerilla warfare between Democratic governors and a future Republican president.”

“Virginia took a big step yesterday toward eliminating most of the state’s 21 abortion clinics, approving a bill making rules so strict the medical centers would likely be forced to close, Democrats and abortion-rights supporters said," AP writes. "Governor Bob McDonnell, a Republican, supports the measure, and when he signs it into law, Virginia will be the first state to require clinics that provide first-trimester abortions to meet the same standards as hospitals. The requirements could include structural changes such as widening hallways, increased training, and mandatory equipment the clinics do not have.”

angellight, Thank God that it is now over!! Now can the teachers finally teach class instead of using class time for union enrolment and propaganda? Can the teachers now show up for work now? Can the kids get the education that they need to succeed in the real world? Lets now move forwards for our children!! As for the union rights that were lost, how dose that hurt the non-union people and what rights did they give up in this mess? The upper union class is now joining the average middle class when it come to benefits, now that makes it more fair for all of us!! How come Democrats talk about everyone paying their fair share, (Obama Care,) but they don't apply it to their union friends? Like we don't see the favoritism!!

angelite - didn't know that government was supposed to provide free motel accomodations for protestors. Suppose you think that the cafeterias and vending area should provide food for free as well! Hope the protestors brought their own toilet paper.

Olddog, fair for all of us? Let me get this straight...raising taxes on the rich is socialism, but cutting the benefits of teachers is all about fairness...?

Tim,

Those benefits are paid by the people, is that fair? Raising taxes is a moot point, Obama caved in.

    #1.4 - Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:43 PM EST

Tim, Tim, Tim in Minnesota, Why do we need to raise taxes on anyone? Sure their are some loop hole that need to be plugged, by why is it that we need to raise taxes when there is so much government waste that can be cut first! Start with the White House, Hillery Clinton had 3 staff members to help with her agenda, Now Michelle Obama has over 22, including a full time hair dresser to help her with her agenda???? Yep, us right wingers have to go with Clinton on this, she can do some of her own work!! Hold on, don't kick me out of the party yet, How many did Barbra Bush have? 1, yep, only one! Republicans win that one for having a smart first ladies, who are also not lazy! By the way, 3 staff members for a First Lady was the max, until Mrs. Obama went and set a new standard for waste!! She should pay America back for her wasteful abuse!! If a republican First Lady had 22 staff members, the protesters from the left would make the protesters in Madison Wisconsin look like a kids birthday party!!!

Cutting benefits for Teachers???? I pay for mine, so why do you think that I should pay for theirs? Where are my rights to have someone else paying for my benefits?? Are union employees better then the rest of us? If they are, then we should have the best educated kids in the world! We don't!! So,I will make you a deal, if the teachers put our kids on top for the best educated kids in the world, Then I will join the cause to have the teachers benefits 100% paid for and no co-pay at the doctors office!!! But only for the best educated kids in the world, no runners up, or second prize, all or nothing! Deal?

George Bernard Shaw once suggested that:

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."

Teachers teaching kids to be rich, but are poor themselves, makes George point even more profound!

Good for Virginia. If there are going to be abortions, what this law will do is ensure that at least the clinic's health standards are met so the patients get the same healthy environment for their surgery that we have come to expect in our hospitals. If a clinic cannot do that , then they should not be open for business. Aaah, Republicans doing what is best for the female patients, but I am sure that our liberals friends will decry it as keeping women from being able to have abortions... Far from it!!!. What can be wrong with this Virginia initiative?

This fight in WI is counter productive to job creation, the GOP has done it again" this could have waited for a better time, and it is far from over, it could cause the country to go back into A recession, thanks GOP if we start losing more jobs, and go back into A recession you can thank the GOP for it, If they don't get off the campaign trail and start doing the job they were elected to do we will all be paying A lot more than money to get the country back on track!!!

Incidentally, Goldman Sachs (of all people!) just issued a study that concluded that the proposed $61 billion in Congressional cuts will lop about 2% off the growth rate of the GDP. And the Republicans ran on promises to CREATE jobs?!? Of course! Then they'll try to pin it on President Obama.

Wi is broke and its because the union thugs spends all the money on elections instead of putting back into the state to help create jobs and so the gov. has to do something to bring down the deficite, I think its the democratis thugs keeping the cry babies out in the streets and the dem. senators runnung away, that shows cowardism you have the biggest union thug pulling obamas strings in the whitehouse, he admitted being thier as much as twice a week every week so how can you blame Wi problems just on rep. mabe you need to stop watching all these socially biast news stations like msnbc, nbc.

I'm ashamed and have a deep hatred toward them for selling jobs over seas, using propaganda to help the rich stay in power. I'm ashamed of the Republicans for bringing the standard of living down, while the ELITE have gotten richer & the Poor poorer & more of them. I'm ashamed of President Reagan for double talking when he said " Government is not the Solution, but the Problem ", then he fired Air Traffic Controllers & he was Government. He was a hippocrit. I'm deeply ashamed of the whole Bush Administration for making wars without taxes, then wasting billions, while some of his staff had SELF CONFLICTS OF INTEREST in the Iraq war for their personal financial gain. I'm ashamed of the whole Republican Party for only representing the WEALTHY of this country and not 300 million Americans. I'm ashamed for so much stupidy of voters and just how nieve & gullible they are for voting Republican. I'm ashamed for a system of government that is not functioning, is broken & corrupt with money ties to HEDGE FUNDS in Wall Street to run Propaganda Ads.

Liberals are so whiny about issues! Also, how did the article go from Obama agenda: Fighting the GOP governors into an abortion issue? Why is it that abortions have to be political? I don't believe that should be the way for a women to go, but doesn't matter what I think because it's ultimately the womens body. Supreme Court should kick Roe vs. Wade out and send that back to the states. Let the states decide if they want to allow abortions. ( I can't see any state not passing some abortion law) But the federal government shouldn't be allowed to give any money for abortions. If states want to vote on a law to help pay for it, then so be it. But get this topic out of politics!

I read a post that mentioned one of the more important parts of the dispute in Wisconsin, the school children. Most everyperson that made the decision to become a teacher did so because of their love for children. When those feelings are translated into their style of teaching and keeping children interested in learning it has a positive effect on students. I know first hand about that because of the positive impact a teacher had on my daughter and all the other children in his class. But being a teacher or a worker in either the public or private sector is still this, a job. And when any of us think our employer is treating us unfairly it likely means we will not do our job with the enthusiasm that we used to. And when our employer asks us to come forward with ideas to help them be successful we may stay silent. I agree with the need to address cost's in state budgets. I disagree with the union busting tactics. The cost is to high for the children.

It has been my experience that compensation isn't the only reason for doing the job. The best have higher goals in mind. I took a $35,000 a year cut in pay to take a federal job, because I believe in it. Now, many of us feel as though we have been run over from behind due to unrealistic budget cuts. I fight wildland fires for a living. Now there is no money.

If American workers' spirit is broken so the corporations can decide the working conditions then workers worldwide will think twice about fighting for their working rights...hence the fastness of bills to bust unions after the demonstrations in the middle east started.

Posh housing, cars, designer clothes etc. I said to myself that Americans are getting wealthier. When I found out that there were ordinary govt employees. I suffered a blackout.
