Obama agenda: DOMA arigato...

The top story in the Boston Globe: “Obama rejects Defense of Marriage Act,” calling it “an unexpected victory” for “gay-rights activists.”

“House Republicans blasted President Barack Obama for deeming a provision of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, calling Wednesday’s decision a political stunt and a distraction from fiscal issues,” Roll Call adds. “ ‘While Americans want Washington to focus on creating jobs and cutting spending, the President will have to explain why he thinks now is the appropriate time to stir up a controversial issue that sharply divides the nation,’ Michael Steel, a spokesman for Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), said in a statement.”

(Um, what about Pence’s measure to defund Planned Parenthood?)

The New York Times: "For Mr. Obama, who opposes same-sex marriage but has said repeatedly that his views are 'evolving,' there are political implications as well. Coming on the heels of his push for Congress to repeal the 'don’t ask, don’t tell' law barring the military from allowing gay people to serve openly, the administration’s move seems likely to intensify the long-running cultural clash over same-sex marriage as the 2012 political campaign is heating up."

Journalists not given clearance to report on the unrest in Libya will be considered “Al Qaida collaborators” by the Libyan government, according to the U.S. State Department.

If the United States were a corporation, it would be worth negative $44 trillion. That’s according to the forthcoming Bloomberg News/Business Week cover story by Mary Meeker, which will be out later this morning. The U.S.’s biggest problems, according to Meeker, are entitlement spending, debt, and underinvestment in education and technology. (Of course, government isn't a business…)

Whether you believe the law is correct, or incorrect, it seems to me that the attorney general has an obligation to defend it. If it is the law of the land, and as attorney general, you believe it to be unconstitutional, then file suit in federal court to have it recinded. This feels exactly like what Jerry Brown as Attorney General of California, and Arnold as Governor, did with respect to Prop 8 here in California. They didn't like the law that was enacted by the citizens of California, they felt it was unconstitutional, so they refused to defend it in court when it was challenged. I'm not a big believer in Prop 8, quite frankly I don't really care what you call it, civil union, or marriage, but when the person or persons elected to enforce law (attorney general Brown, or Holder), and the chief executive of the state/nation (governor or president) refuse to uphold their responsibilities, how do you support them?

For folks like "I must be dreaming", I don't see this as a republican or democrat issue, it's really about upholding the law, or changing it via the appropriate route, which I think in this case, is through the court system.

What most people don't understand or agree with is that in some states the marriage's are legal and have to be protected ! Even if your not in agreement..the senate/congress and the people have spoken...And now there are thousands of children involved ..and these children have to be protected by the federal government with the same rights and expectations other family's are afforded ! Yes America is changing and who hates change the most .....the old people ...The new members of the senate and the congress are thinking in 2011 not 1958 ...yes you do have a blk president ... you know dam well you would have never would have never treated Obama this way... if he was a white man ...And all this disdain was created by the old republican men ...who saw their power being stripped away layer by layer ...losing control of the people ! The people of the USA are no longer subjected to terror terror terror as a way of controlling them ..they no longer fall for this ....and right now the people of the USA have seen a republican in action in the form of a prank phone call who ..tried to seem like he was doing as ordered by the Koch brothers ! We now see how the republicans tried to take over the USA .. on local levels to keep the people under control ! Strip them of their rights to a decent living and decent benefits...but got busted on tape ! Rather then resignin shame .. what does he say ....i wont let a lil phone call ....... its your call 2012 is right around the corner !

I think you've lost focus, the issue is DOMA, not a black president, not old people, not white men, not Governor Walker in Wisconsin, not the Koch brothers. If the marriage is legal within specific states, it's legal, nobody is suggesting that the various states recind their respective laws. My suggestion was that if AG Holder thinks this is an unconstitutional law, he file suit in a federal court to have it recinded, not just choose to selectively enforce laws he likes, and not enforce laws he doesn't like. You must be aware that he knows how to file lawsuits, he filed a lawsuit in federal court to overturn Arizona's immigration law, it's the same process.

This has to be the first time at least in my lifetime that a POTUS has ever said the Federal Govt. will not defend a LAW passed by Congress. This is in defiance of a co-equal branch of Govt. This is like saying if a Republican POTUS comes in, he can completely obliverate every LAW passed by a Democratic congress.

He is POTUS not the King. This is going to get real messy shortly. The LAW cannot be ignored by the Govt. just simply because the Obama administration do not like it.

There should be no issue with defunding Planned Parethood since Obamacare is going to make sure every citizen buys "government approved" healthcare.

What don't you get about that?..............unless you are in favor of PIMPS being able to get their FOREIGN SEX SLAVES treatment ( you know abortions and such)

      or

You're in favor of double-dipping off the taxpayer.

Planned Parenthood will NOT be de-funded, because it is a vital organization. This has nothing to do with double-dipping into the Health care law.

With the turmoil in the Middle East, the budget fight in Washington, the DOJ still, after two yrs, unable to make a decision on GITMO detainees, the states battling unions in several states, the President can only talk about not defending the Defense of Marriage Act. Only the courts can decide if a law is unconstitutional or not, it is not up to the President or the DOJ. If congress wants to pass a bill that repeals the DOMA that is their right, in the mean time the DOJ is obligated to defend the law.

Did anyone read the article. If America was a corporation it would be 44 trillion to the negative. Why I support the right of gay marriage. This is just an effort to distract the American people from high unemployment no jobs, falling home prices, high gas prices, high food prices, forclousures and the middle east.

The issue is whether or not DOMA is a states issue or a Federal issue. That is the question concerning the Constitution

Really doesn't matter much to me anymore. Now that obama can decide on his own which laws are to be defended, I had a good conservation, long overdue, with my conscience. I decided on MY own to no longer allow the Internal Revenue Code to be applied to me. So you all can take over that portion of our "laws" for me. As a combat vet I am in favor of gays openly serving in military - but no one usurping the power constitutionally reserved to the Judicial Branch. obama is just more slime lawyer in Gov't - he needs to go get a real job.

YOU GO, MR PREZ!!!! It's about time. We voted for you cause you said you would do this for us. I think you should go afer those that line the pockets of those that are fighting us. Maybe like take away their non-denomination status. We pay taxes, go to war, bleed and sometimes die. and we also go to church. God loves us. We have families that love us. And shame on those that cause them that commit suicide because of their hate for us. I know a few that have. I miss them. IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
