Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), embroiled in a battle over public workers’ collective bargaining rights, was pranked by someone posing as conservative money man David Koch. The person, as identified by Mother Jones is Ian Murphy, works for the Web site Buffalo.Beast.com (which was down at last check, but Mother Jones also posted the audio.)
The Washington Post’s Greg Sargeant reports that he confirmed with the governor’s office that the call is, in fact, real, that Walker is the person on the call.
Walker reveals his strategy for dealing with Democrats in the state, including a plan to try and lure the 14 Democratic-state legislators back to the state, to talk at the state Capitol in an effort to move the legislation forward.
“But I’m not negotiating,” Walker says. The fake Koch and Walker joke about bringing a baseball bat to the meeting. "I have one in my office,” Walker says, “you'd be happy with that. I've got a slugger with my name on it."
Walker’s not the only politician to be pranked. Remember, Sarah Palin took a call from someone she thought was French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The caller was really from a Canadian morning show. (Audio here.)
*** UPDATE *** NBC News has also confirmed with Gov. Walker's office that the prank call is authentic. It is Walker. Here's a statement from his office:
The Governor takes many calls everyday. Throughout this call the Governor maintained his appreciation for and commitment to civil discourse. He continued to say that the budget repair bill is about the budget. The phone call shows that the Governor says the same thing in private as he does in public and the lengths that others will go to disrupt the civil debate Wisconsin is having.

hey i'm hearing possible ethical violations this governor may have done in this punked phone call to his corporate master koch. good!! i hope they recall him and go after the republican senators that are going along with everything he's trying to do too. what does it say about them - co-conspirators.
Come on people, there is a saying if it quacks like a duck, looks a duck, than it has to be a duck. This whole thing is not about the budget. Its about liniing your puckets with the tic for tac. The unions are put in place to protect the rights of the American workers. This man Walker is not thinking about the people and how what he is affects the people because he wants to be king of the world, a trend setter, or just maybe he lost some brain cells. Pat B. on morning Joe, man make up your mind.Your like a leaf on a windy day. All over the place. If we let people like Walker to do this then we have to get ready for women rights for equal pay to be taking away, child labor laws to be trashed, civil right laws to be rewritten to suit the wealthy, and introduce slavery laws. You are upset because of who they say Walker is liken too. They did and said the same things, and came from the republican party and now its wrong. Take off the blind fold.
Barry Obama should be recalled instead of the Gov.
When "Koch" calls Mika Brzezinski "a real piece of ass," Walker does not respond by saying something awful, which is a bit of a disappointment. -- Feisty
No wonder we can't get anywhere in our political system! Both sides have predetermined points that they want to state, sling or prove about the OTHER and rarely manage to say anything about THEMSELVES and THEIR OWN ideas! The donkeys and the elephants yell the same baseless insults at each other, often using the exact same words! But here's a new one for me: actual conscious disappointment that Walker DIDN'T prove himself a lecher in addition to a union buster!? People, we're not electing cheerleaders for a middle school football team here! We've degenerated into a mass popularity contest, because we have no freaking idea how government is supposed to work. Everybody here must have slept through Civics 101. Seriously, and some of the crap in this discussion is just plain grade school, with the "Liberals always say this." "Nuh uuuuh! It's conservatives always talking about that!" or "THEY did it FIRST (insert whiney voice)!" Adult humans reduced to grammar school deportment, debating by insults instead of ideas; nothing but prejudice, stereotypes and -- I can hear echoes of my mother's voice -- "CHILDREN!!! NAME-CALLING on either side is still HATEFUL BEHAVIOR, no matter whose team you're on!"
Me? Moderate with Conservative leaning, with distinct cynical, skeptical, and sarcastic streaks. I do hate Big Government, that amoeba that is incrementally encroaching upon and swallowing up our freedoms in exchange for promised comfort that never materializes, putting us all deeper and deeper in debt and @$$-raping the Founding Fathers in their graves. It has to end somewhere! And in that I'm still in favor of many Libertarian ideas (but not all) cheifly of allowing the least restrictive environment at every possible juncture and going back to the days of a smaller Federal government, just as the Constitution pointedly states in unarguable wording. I am SOOOOO ready for a Pluralist Party, one that recognizes that our country is made up of differing ideologies scrambling for attention and their piece of the pie. Yes, a truly representative government ought to be able to sort it out from there, but these different groups are made up of PEOPLE who do at least deserve to be heard and acknowledged! I'm sick of the mud-slinging and insults and trickery and lying (yes, FOX does frequently lie). Yes, I do believe that AFL-CIO is no longer for the people, is essentially either mafia linked, but if not, at least uses many mafia-type tactics in its bid for more power (eg: no one should HAVE to be a member of a union or hire union. What? For "protection?"). I do believe that unions became so greedy that they have "negotiated" the American Worker out of all the jobs. With all that is required to satisfy the union, with the demands rising year after year, it's no longer worth it. Things are cheaper in China, Mexico, India, and THEY don't bellyache about healthcare benefits and coffee breaks. I do believe that the word "Progressive" translates directly as "Socialist," and they just picked another word to refer to themselves because they could no longer legitimately deny their intentions (see the short video clip of the California Congresswoman saying "We should socialize, uh, I mean, uh. . .). I do believe that she only let the cat out of the hole-riddled bag by uttering publicly a word that likely finds itself quite comfortable in private, "in-crowd" conversations. On the other hand, I also believe that yes, many Conservatives do sound like grousing, bitter, resentful and frankly hateful people. But know what? Same is true of liberals. I do believe that pro-choice on abortion is the least of all evils, a right that we have to live with, because this is an imperfect world. No one should swipe that choice away from a pregnant girl or woman. And anyone who disagrees (if they're fit to parent) better be willing to prove their sincerity by adopting one or several children, no matter what hue they're clothed in on this planet. I do believe that we shouldn't be subsidizing Big Oil, the most profitable enterprise in all of history. I even believe that only the small farmer should be subsidized, no these mega-farm-machine operations. And while I see it as my responsibility to extend BASIC healthcare to everyone, I don't want to see a non-payer with better coverage than the average worker! I do believe that we should extend daycare services to the welfare class and I believe that every "welfare" or "disability" child -- bar none but orphans and kids with severe cognitive deficit -- should get to see at least one parent go off to work (or school), because if Mommy or Daddy doesn't have to work, why should Junior bother with a job, either?? I want term limits and line-item veto, and I want to $limit wht lobbyists can give. Most of all, I want to see an additional slot on the ballot for "None of The Above," that would require the top two parties to scrap the previous candidates and start over if the majority voted for NoTA. Maybe then we could move forward instead of regurgitating and chomping the same old cud we have since long before I was born. If you read this entire visceral rant, thanks. If you didn't, that may have been wise. I'm done.
Yea that about sums it up.
It's sad really
This whole situation is NOT about the budget as anyone can see by the Governors conversation. He is not interested in balancing the budget. The plain truth is this is about breaking the unions. Why you might ask? Well the unions are the last major donors to the Democratic Party. Get rid of the unions and Republicans will have the Political Playing Field all to themselves. I love the way Walker was asking the fake David Koch for campaign monies for the Republicans who were going along with this Ponzi Scheme. Or how they had given thought to sending agitators into the crowds even though school children were there. Anyone who is really interested in getting the countries financial house in order should check out the work Gov Malloy in Connecticut is doing. He inherited a large deficit from the previous Republican Administration. He negotiated State Funded Entitlements down and Raised Taxes on the Wealthy back to where they were previously and WA-LA a ballanced budget. Shared Sacrifice! Thats the ticket!
Hello America, while you folks argue about the goverment, maybe I can shed some light on the Wisconsin Dilema, now lets see most Wisconsin School teachers earn about $90,000 dollars a year, now it takes 1 gallon of Milk to make 1 lb of cheese, and we can sell 1 lb of cheese for $5.oo and add tax of 0.50 cents for the State, to pay 1 teacher a yearly salary, we would have to sell 180,000 one pound packages of cheese, to produce that 180,000 packages of cheese would require 180,000 gallons of milk, now most happy cows can produce 1 gallon of milk a day of which the farmer gets $1.50, and it takes 1 bail of hay to feed that one cow, now for 365 days it would take about 495 cows, so we need 495 cows fed for a year to produce 180,000 gallons of milk = 180,000 lbs of cheese, now this requires 495 cows X 365 days X 1 bail hay for each cow = 180,000 bails of hay, no I'm trying to remember but I think you can get about 40 bails from 1 acre each crop, and maybe get 2 crops a year so maybe 80 bails of hay per acre, so 180,000 bails / 80 bails per acre = 2225 acres, now a Big Tractor can cultivate probably 100 acres in 5 days, and each day takes about 20 gallons of diesel fuel, so it takes 100 gallons of diesel fuel to plow 100 acres, (seems too high), it takes 2225 gallons of diesel fuel to cultivate 180,000 bails of hay, now it takes about 1 barrel of oil to produce 1 gallon of diesel fuel, so we would need 2225 barrels of oil, now each barrel costs $100.00 so it costs $222,500.00 dollars of foreign oil to produce the 180,000 lbs of cheese neccesary to pay the 1 school teacher $90,000 a year. I think the farmer is the one losing here, lets see famer gets $1.50 for 1 gallon of milk so $1.50 x 180,000 gallons = $270,000 now subtract the cost of the Oil $270,000 - $222,500 = $47,500 so thats about right Farmer gets about $47,500 a year to produce the Cheese so that the 1 school teacher can earn a $90,000 dollar a year salary. well obviously when the Farmer sells his cheese to the Muslim Brotherhood he needs to get at least $50.00 to $55.00 a pound. sincerely Fezzy Bear
$90,000 a year? Where did you hear that?
The average salary for a teacher in Wisconsin is $46,390 a year - so the teacher actually gets paid about the same as the farmer.
Yes eric your close only missed it by 40,000.
The avg. salary is 52,800.00
The value of their benefits is for every dollar they earn in salary they get .72 worth of benefits (ie health insurance, even after they retire, pension plan for retirement, ect)
So if you do the math 52,800(salary) x .72(benefits)=37,440.00 add them together and you get a AVG. yearly pay of 90,240.00 !!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and if you think this is the same as all of us get think again.THE AVG. PER DOLLAR EARNED FOR PRIVATE EMPLOYEES IS .28 . so unless your a public employee. That's what us workin folk get .28
So you tell me is that out of whack or what.......
So nearly 40,000 a year in benefits is why the states are broke.
YOU TOO CAN LOOK IT UP.
All the information is out there straight from wisconsin.gov
WE SIMPLY CANNOT SUSTAIN THIS AMOUNT OF ENTITLEMENTS.
Oh,and if i hear 1 more time about the gov. giving all his "corp buddies a big tax break"or we'd have the money to pay the teachers,i'm going to puke.
Why can't you people get it through your head tax cuts for the companys that employ the people of wisc.(so they won't leave and either go to a non-union state or overseas).ONLY PROVIDES MORE TAX DOLLARS FOR THE STATE.
You know when you work and get a paycheck, then go to the local store and buy gas, food, household goods, tires for your car,or whatever.
If you liberal had it your way you'd tax them till they either went completely bankrupt,or laid off half the workers,or just shut down and went somewhere else where it does'nt cost them an arm and a leg to do business....Damn those rich bas tur ds
SO sad,its really simple math, but you just can't see it.........IT's alway's the EVIL RICH CORPORATIONS,that are not GIVING US enough money
Check this out: http:// www.you tube.com/ user/ Carrie4USA
They need to impeach this man immediately!!! I am hoping this will help Obama win 2012. The Republicans are proving to be even scummier than one could imagine...and stupid! A bad, bad combo.
So you mean to tell me obama and the democrats never did anything like "trying to trick the dems. into coming in to do their job"?
Please, surely your not that blind
Come on now,I can only imagine being a fly on the wall
a fly on the wall during the healthcare debate.......can you imagine the Evil Tricks that were discussed?
From both dems. and republicans......remember they are all politicians
But if BOTH PARTIES dont wake up and stop the waste and the spending on these entitlements...
Our children and grand children will be speaking CHINESE....Surely even you libs dont want this great country to go under......well do ya?
Well then we all need to work together and do something.
or thats where well be chinese
