Inside the Boiler Room: Another government shutdown?
Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss the likelihood that House Republicans will shut down the government, a la Newt Gingrich in 1994, and the political implications of such a move.
Please define failure. Something has to be done about the debt. Obama knows it, he just won't take any steps to actually do anything about it.
Does China have to lend to us forever? What happens if they simply stop? Is there another source of money? Of course not. So the only thing to do then is print more money. That will not work well for anyone.
They will spend $1.65 trillion more than they have, this year alone. That is failure, a failure to budget, a failure to allocate, a failure to live within your means.
There are 22 bags of trsh that will be going to the curb in 2012. Make that 22 trashy Democratic Senators that are up for re-election in 2012.
The House has done it's job. It has voted and passed it's budget, and passed it on to the Senate. the House is done. Now it's the Senate's turn. Lets see who actually shuts down the government.
If I was a Democratic Senator, I would be quietly lining up a decent job for after 2012.
This question is excellent and brings focus on how Republicans will do anything to obtain greed and power.
Republicans are effing/ed up and they know it.
Republican want Americans to spread the pain but not the wealth i.e. jobs, pensions, and other benefits; education, and housing as well as basic infrastructure we need to be competitive and survive.
Republicans are making every effort to attack workers, unions, the middle and poor classes basic rights. Republicans think if they steal of labor. They maintain can their richs. Hey, righties Presdident Lincolon’s Emancipation Proclamation ended chattel slavery in 1863. slavery was so damn profitable then and now Republicans to steal the fruits of the middle and working classes labor.
Republican/ Tea baggers think they can mend this ruse by putting the blame on democratics and unions. In essence Republican and astro turf Tea baggers are saying screw you.
Republicans think if they steal labor; they can maintain their riches. Hey, righties wake up; President Lincolon's Emancipation Proclamation ended chattel slavery in 1863. Slavery was so damn profitable then. Now Republicans want to steal the fruits of the middle and working classes labor to start a new serfdom.
Republican/ astro turf Tea baggers think they can mend this ruse by putting the blame on democratics and unions.
In essence Republican and astro turf Tea baggers are saying screw you. Wake up people. Don't let these Republican crooks and liars change the world as we know it.
Let us not forget the history of a very dark past, when....
On May 2nd, 1933, the day after Labor day, Nazi groups occupied union halls and labor leaders were arrested. Trade Unions were outlawed by Adolf Hitler, while collective bargaining and the right to strike was abolished. This was the beginning of a consolidation of power by the fascist regime which systematically wiped out all opposition groups, starting with unions, liberals, socialists, and communists using Himmler’s state police.
Fast forward to America today, particularly Wisconsin. Governor Walker and the Republican/Tea Party members of the state legislature are attempting to pass a bill that would not only severely punish public unions (with exception for the police, fire, and state trooper unions that supported his campaign), but it would effectively end 50 years to the right of these workers to collectively bargain.
Collective bargaining is a process of voluntary negotiations between employers and trade unions aimed at reaching agreements which regulate working conditions. Collective agreements usually set out wage scales, working hours, training, health and safety, overtime, grievance mechanisms and rights to participate in workplace or company affairs. -wiki
And that is why, GOP have been steadily getting rid of manufacturing jobs, which has hurt all of Americans, to disemble the Unions and make them powerless.
Boehner , Oconnell, Teabaggers etc etc. only care about their Political position and what they can gain and nothing at all about this country and the people in it. What will they and their Million air friends do when they have killed all of us off ? Whos backs will they ride then and what will happen to the gravy train they are on now?
How is it the TEA Party's fault? They cut 61 Billion off the budget, so what's the problem. It's in the Senate's hands now. If they vote it down, who's fault would it be?
Funny, you lead with No umployment payments, then Social Security payments, any other givemes you want to write down. Is Social Security a giveme? No it's not if you put into it.
If the governement doesn't pass teh CR, then there is no infrastructure to issue the checks. The money will be there, but no one will be around to print and cut them. THAT'S why this will affect Social Security.
Exactly Paul. Notice the bias in the story line, the "House Republicans will shut down the government". Really? The House has passed the CR, with several Democratic votes. It awaits approval by the Senate. Now it sure looks like Senate Majority Leader Reid isn't too concerned about it passing in the Senate, else he'd have his Senate in session to debate the House bill and to be sure to be working out any differences he might have with the House bill, you know, doing everything he could to avert a government shutdown. But Harry and his Senate are out of town. I imagine he thinks the CR will sail right through the Senate, that's why he doesn't appear concerned at all about it.
I guess if Obama was to be bothered to comment on this, he'd say the House bill is an "assault" on the government. But, seeing Obama is silent, I guess that would just be an assumption.
If the governement doesn't pass teh CR, then there is no infrastructure to issue the checks. The money will be there, but no one will be around to print and cut them. THAT'S why this will affect Social Security.
So the Senate better get cracking on it. Oh wait, they're out of town. Darn!
Ha.. they take a week off at this time every year. Boehner knows it. Why isn't he calling congress back in session to prep a possible alternate bill if the current one fails to pass the senate? Why have they already taken several WEEKS off when they knew this was an important issue?
The blame game can go both ways, and will be spun both ways. Just a question of who the majority of people want to blame. Since the Dems have said they are willing to negotiate, and the Republicans have shown an unwillingness to do so who will get the blame?
One that doesn't cater so heavily to the Tea Party would be a good start. Having that in his back pocket to produce and ram through would be the best bet. The CR is going to die in the senate. Sorry. It just is.
How many "alternative" bills should the House consider, you know, before the Senate gets off it's lazy butt and gets to work?
How many are there?
thetotas ~
If they were so worried, why did they take off for a week? How can you justify that? Didn't they do this last year as well?
About how republicans justified their obstructionism for the past two years, and about how Scott Walker justifies introducing $140 million in tax cuts for the wealthy into what he claims is a deep, long-standing deficit crisis. It's the new government paradigm.
The House has done it's job. Now it is up to the Democratic controlled Senate, and then Obama.
There are 22 Democratic Senators up for re-election in 2012. We need to watch them carefully to see who might be worthy of re-election. Watch how they vote on these budget cuts. Then take out the trash in 2012.
Genius - there was a budget last year that passed the House. The Republicans in the Senate filibustered it until it died. That is why an stop-gap budget is in place. The stop-gap ends March 4th.
The Republicans have always wanted to shut down the government in order to destroy what recovery the economy has made.
AT this point I am so fed up with ignorant, uninformed people that I hope you get just what you ask for. Good luck with having less than nothing.
Late to the Party Ongoing.. I already retracted that statement and Adminited that Pelosi carries some of the blame. Do try to keep up, old boy.
However, the Republicans knew that cutting only social programs would lead the bill to be dropped by the senate. Hmm.. almost like they were trying to pass the buck on the governement shut down onto the Dems? imagine that.
Having a compromise bill ready to go, would have been proof of an effective Speaker of the House. Pelosi was good at that kind of stuf. "Damn, filibusterd again, OK, here is the compromise bill. All in favor. Aye". Like her or hate her, she knew how to keep the House running. I Actually don't care for her much. I think she is way to partisan, BUT, I respect her ability to get the job done.
We should all be looking forward to the Senate debate this week debating the $63 billion in cuts to the 2011 budget, the very same bill that passed the House of Representatives. We can expect some lively debate this week in the Senate on this bill.
But we won't hear any of that debate, will we. Because, the Democratic lead US Senate is in recess for the entire week, they skipped town just like their partners in crime did in Wisconsin. And the Continuing Resolution, of which these cuts are a part of, expires the first week of March.
So we see the statement above: "Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss the likelihood that House Republicans will shut down the government . . " But that's not really true, is it? The bill is open to debate by the Senate, which has neglected its duties by leaving town. If the Democratic Senate, and Obama, can't get their act together in time before the CR expires, that's on them.
Do recall the following quote of Obama's from last summers G20 summit:
"Next year, when I start presenting some very difficult choices to the country, I hope some of these folks who are hollering about deficits and debt step up," Obama said after the G-20 summit in Toronto. "Because I'm calling their bluff."
Umm.. JS1. It was a scheduled recess that happens every year. They didn't skip town. It was on the calendar, and Bohner bloody well knew it, so whose fault is it for not getting it up to them before they went on the recess.
If you want to complain about recesses, then complain about Bohner's schedule to let congress go for a week every two weeks. Talk about milking the gravy train.
BfS: Umm.. JS1. It was a scheduled recess that happens every year. They didn't skip town. It was on the calendar, and Bohner bloody well knew it, so whose fault is it for not getting it up to them before they went on the recess.
Well, the Senate had the perfect right to pass their version of the CR before they left town. And if it was that important to them, well maybe Harry Reid could have changed his schedule, he sure managed to do that during the ObamaCare bill debate. It is for the good of the country, is it not?
And of course Obama has weighed in on the entire matter, by staying silent. Same old, same old.
But the fact of the matter is the ball is in the Democrats court. And if they want to manufacture a crisis by delaying action on this bill, that's on them, not the Republicans.
Actually the number is a cut from the CR that is the 2010 budget level not a cut to the non-existent 2011 budget.
Again it will be the House vote that could cause a shutdown since they passed a bill that they knew full well would be a nonstarter in the Senate and knowing they would only have 5 days to consider it before the CR expired.
Now if the House wants to do the correct thing they should start to work on another CR as soon as they return next week.
Don't talk about running home when the Speaker of the House has scheduled every third week off.
All funding bills must start with a House bill. The Senate cannot write a budget bill.
So I want to be clear.. The Dems using stalling tactics is out of bounds, while the Republicans using it is perfectly fine?
So it's only OK if Yourside is fighting off some percieved evil Liberal take over, but if the opposition steps up and says, we want to negoatiate on this, lets slow down, suddenly they are wrong. Yeah your a partisan hack alright.
JoAnna, the Democrats have been asking for the Republicans' versionof the budget for weeks. AND they have been reminding the Republicans that the government needed to be funded or risk a shutdown. Any measure must pass the House before consideration by the Senate. I thought you knew all of this. Obama has not been silent on this.
Many Republicans have stated that it was their INTENT to shut down the government unless they got things exactly the way they wanted them.
Conservatives are all too ready to ignore or twist the facts and shift the blame. Nice try, AGAIN, but this is on the conservatives/Republicans/Tea Party.
DiC: Again it will be the House vote that could cause a shutdown since they passed a bill that they knew full well would be a nonstarter in the Senate
Well then the Senate better get their version of the bill out there so a compromise can be reached because time appears to be of the essense. But where are the Senators? No where in sight. And recall Obama's challenge to the Republicans from last summer:
"Next year, when I start presenting some very difficult choices to the country, I hope some of these folks who are hollering about deficits and debt step up," Obama said after the G-20 summit in Toronto. "Because I'm calling their bluff."
Lets hope Harry keeps that in mind when he's passing the House version of the CR.
BfS: The Dems using stalling tactics is out of bounds, while the Republicans using it is perfectly fine?
Republicans aren't stalling anything. In the US Congress, they have passed the 2011 CR. In Wisconsin, the Republican Senators are in session, waiting patiently for the Democrats to return from their vacation in Rockford Illinois so they can stop holding the Peoples business hostage, and get to work on getting the Peoples work done.
Have you forgetten December already? That wasn't wisconcin, but it certainly was the U.S. Senate Republicans stalling then. Partisan Hackery at it's finest. Spin, spin, spin, spin. The repulcians never stalled, they just fought the opressive Democrats. B.S.
I have to wonder how many times the u.s. electorate will vote to have the republicans kick their teeth in before they realize that voting against ones own self interest is stupid? I mean seriously folks historically speaking the republicans have done nothing but rape and pillage the working class in this country for better than 20 years, been piling money into the top 2% of the country at the expense of the other 98%, I mean it's all fact, and yet the stupid people in this country hear a 15 second sound bite with "socialism", "government take over", "radical liberal" or some such nonsense and their $hit falls out, mind you they have absolutely no idea what any of those terms mean and are too damn lazy to find out, the negative way the terms are presented are proof enough for the zoombie like masses that the people that ruined the country should be put back in charge at all costs, what a bunch of ignorant fu4king losers the voting public are.
fielden: Conservatives are all too ready to ignore or twist the facts and shift the blame. Nice try, AGAIN, but this is on the conservatives/Republicans/Tea Party.
But fielden, the GOP is just meeting Obama's challenge. Obama said he was going to call their bluff, but the House got out ahead of that challenge and have passed a bill reducing the 2011 budget by $63 billion dollars. Where is the Democrats bill in the Senate in response to Obama's challenge? Where is their $63 billion dollars in cuts? Are the Democrats not serious about deficit reduction?
Oh wait.. and who stalled the budget last year? Umm. The Dems? Nope. The Republicans fillibusterd last years budget to force us into this position. How quickly you forget that! How typical of a partisan Hack.
Is this not entirely the fault of Nancy Pelosi and last congress? This discussion is based on the need for a continuing resolution, which is only needed because Pelosi, for reasons known only to her chose not to pass a budget last year.
Failure to lead. last year in the House and Senate, this year in the Senate, and for sure in Wisconsin. What message there? When the times get tough, the tough leave town?
Obama was very clear - elections have consequences. Wisconsin elected a whole bunch of Republicans. It is now time to deal with that reality.
BiF: Have you forgetten December already? That wasn't wisconcin, but it certainly was the U.S. Senate Republicans stalling then
Using the rules provided in each House of Congress to delay action are perfectly legitimate. When the Democrats lose control of the Senate next year, it is fully expected they will use the delay tactics that are legally available to them. That is how a democracy works. That's what separates us from anarchy, which we currently are seeing in Wisconsin.
And if the Republicans wish to filibuster the CR in the Senate, then any government shut down is on them. But I have a feeling the GOP won't be doing that.
Many Republicans have stated that it was their INTENT to shut down the government unless they got things exactly the way they wanted them
Intent means nothing. The CR is sitting on the Democratically led Senate doorstep, and they won't take it up until next week. They don't look they're in too much of a hurry, now do they? If they have a problem with it, you'd think they'd be acting on it now, you know, to avoid a government shutdown.
Actually muffintop1, Pelosi did pass a budget. The Repbuclican Senatators filibustered it out of existance, or did you forget that part of the equation.
Hey folks, don't worry about the budget, isn't that what happened last year prior to the election? The Democratic Party thought it in the best interests of their Party NOT to pass a budget.......now what is the issue with the Republicans not showing their budget yet?
Actually muffintop1, Pelosi did pass a budget. The Repbuclican Senatators filibustered it out of existance, or did you forget that part of the equation.
I must have forgotten this Brian, for I don't recall this event happening. All I recall reading in the media print was the Dems pulled the budget from the process.
BfS: JS1:And this delaying tactict isn't legal then, you are saying?
The one the Democrats are using in Wisconsin by running away to Illinois? No, I don't think it's legal. Not when the State Troopers are out looking for them, and if they find them, they've been ordered to drag them back to the Senate chambers. That sound legal to you? Something about the oath of office the Senators took, performing their duties and such. I think that means they're supposed to show up when the Senate is in session. I would imagine impeachment is in the works for those Democrats.
Safecraker - that sure is what I remember. Pelosi failed to pass a budget, intentionally and on purpose. That was her decision, but now that decision is having real consequences.
But maybe Brian can show us how mistaken we are and show us that budget Pelosi passed?
Ha.. my Bad.. got confused with the Military Appropriation. They Deemed and Passed the Budget in 2011, but didn't take an actual vote. That does fall on Pelosi's shoulder.
At the same time, the republicans know their proposal won't get past the Senate, so why not send a more resonable bill, and save the big budget fight for 2012?
Well Brian, your Bad was passed on to several posts as accurate. Glad to hear a responsible conclusion to your erroneous statement.
Now why won't the republican proposal get past the Senate? Could it be Harry and the Dems? Why isn't this a reasonable bill? Personally, I believe they can cut even more funds from the budget.
Just take a look at the various Tsars and their staff. Since they are not a formal part of gov., why not cut them and their staffs? Savings.
Look at the various Agencies, Departments and Boards that we have today. Are they all necessary? Could similar agencies be merged to perform the same functions without harming people? Of course they could, and again, we can cut leadership, staff, expense....Savings.
How about actually reducing the number of Senators today. I recognize the Founding Fathers felt that two were needed from each state, and perhaps that was due to travel at the time. But do we actually require two today? Reduce by 50%, no staff, office expense, travel expense, etc......Savings
Spending/borrowing/taxes. All can be handled easily. Pass a bill that all citizens pay a flat tax rate that can't be raised. everyone nows pays that same % bases on their income. .......Savings due to increase in revenues.
Energy exploration.....drilling....refining. Begin to explore and drill in areas where that are known to have large deposits of oil, that are on land and not offshore. Built quickly the refineries necessary to produce the products we need to survive. Let's see.....Savings plus jobs, revenues due to taxes
Nuke Plants......more safe today than ever before.......Savings to the people on energy plus jobs, revenues in taxes and power that can be used efficiently.
Now I know many believe in green energy, and technology still is some time away. I live on one of the largest natural gas repositories in the US. Natural gas needs to be transported, unfortunately which uses fuels. We also have over 750 windmills in town which produces only enough electricity for 2500 homes per year. While helpful, the criteria for wind is minimul in the US......
Corn prices are going up globaly, increasing the costs associated with those industries dependent on the corn product....dairy, feed lots, farming, ethonol........
Face it Big Gov. isn't the answer, neither is the Spending Party tactics of spending to end the recession.
Just a few thoughts. And feel free to add or delete.
"Next year, when I start presenting some very difficult choices to the country, I hope some of these folks who are hollering about deficits and debt step up," Obama said after the G-20 summit in Toronto. "Because I'm calling their bluff."
Along these lines, JoAnna, I've been meaning to ask you whether, by exercising your omniscience, you could shed some light on why Scott Walker and the Wisconsin legislature saw fit to pass an additional $140 million in new tax cuts during the January Special Session if the deficit crisis was already as bad as he claims it is now? I mean ... shouldn't a prudent governor and legislature have at least delayed additional cuts until the so-called crisis was under control? But they didn't do that, did they? I wonder why.
Or are you ready to concede that republicans are every bit as irresponsible, and then some, as democrats? Governor Walker's predecessor, for example, worked with the unions to draw concessions in the form of furloughs in order to manage the current biennial deficit into what would have been a surplus, until Walker and his cronyism appeared on the scene. Instead of doing the same thing, Walker decided just to ram his will down their throats. Obscene, really.
Obama and the liberals just don't get it. As Obama himself once said, "elections has consequences". When given an opportunity to show fiscal restraint, he chose to punt and increase the deficit by over a trillion dollars (That's over $1,000,000,000,000). No responsible citizen would run their own household finances this way. Obama rather wants to talk about the benefits of government spending and spout slogans like "Win The Future". The Republicans at least have the balls to tackle the deficit. One wonders why our president is not leading, after all, is he not suppose to be "the leader of the free world". Right now the world and the US has a vacuum in presidential leadership.
Saaayyyyyyy......there's an echo in here. Paid posters shouldn't use last week's mass-ditributed buzz-phrase. It makes you all look, well, suspicious somehow.
There is documetned evidence that both the Dems and Repbulicans use paid help to go onto opposing boards and post their view point like mad. In fact there are documents showing how a repbulican planned on using "Profile managers" to build 100s of profiles and have one person post like mad from those profiles, all spilling the same line.
Hence the wariness of posters who can't actually produce facts, and just spout party rehtoric. Usualy, they are drive bys. one post then gone.
You notice SC I said both sides use it. I have no idea how many people are actual Paid posters, but I don't assume until I try and get facts and valid arguments out of a person and they either vanish, or refuse to answer with anything but Fox sound bites.
Well Brian, I will agree with your comment about both sides having potential interest. I do get a kick out of the Koch Bros. ongoing op ed, and the number of cut and pastes from the libbie blogs like MSNBC, Huffington Post, Daily Kos, and the rest. Fox is the only conservative site, so it is continually under fire.
Facts and agruments without fact are constant....and, at times I am guilty of it too. But, life goes on.
Discussion and debate are fine. But first the Senate has to be in session.
You know what?? Stepping back and looking at the big picture these last two or three months, I see a pattern forming. Seems the libbies are trying to make political hay out of any and every issue.
Why???? Because they are getting desperate for something to hang their political hat on. Time is not on their side. There are 22 Democratic Senators up for re-election in 2012. If they lose just three more seats, It will be a Republican controlled Senate and a Republican Senate Majority Leader.
I plan on being front and center on this newsvine on GLOAT day. That's the day after the elections when I get to sit back and gloat over our Republican victories across the country.
For 30 years we have practiced trickle down economics. It doesn't work. The country was nearly in a depression at the end of the Bush years.
The fact that all of the right wing people posting here either don't get it or are just stupid or perhaps don't want to get it, makes me believe that as a country we are done and finished.
You can try to blame it on the liberals and especially the black man in the White House, but it is your ignorance and failure to analyze, question, and learn that dooms our society.
Thanks Mark and Domenico for the words of sympathy and for answering my question. We do still have 6 Lombardi trophies and at least we lost to a team that is supporting the unions in Wisconsin!
It is interesting to me that Domenico thinks they won't pull the trigger on a shutdown. I think you are right that both sides would prefer the status quo (so each can take credit for improvements)---I wonder if Mr. Boehner is letting the Tea Party folks get away with voting their consciences for now but will rein them in on this vote. Could be like herding cats, though.
Hey Stiller Fan, it is a shame that the President just didn't distribute the points as he has wants to distribute the wealth. Guess that even with the 12 points we turned over, we still would have won. Now that would be a "fair" program I could vote for.l
We will see how it pans out, but just because Clinton won the showdown in 1995, doesn't guarantee a repeat. The voters have wised up......
The Republicans in sticking to their principles, are unmasking Obama as a free-spending radical, whose professed interest in budget trimming is a sham. Obama's re-election could be damaged significantly.
When you do look at the Barry budget plan, you see a number of areas where the actual $ budgeted during the number of years is small. Heck, he'll be out in less than two years, so what does he care? He'll preserve the Jimmy Carter legacy and become the worst Pres. in history.
Sorry Bev, but it's true, it's true! Please cut and paste your response.
I think it comes down to whether or not voters and taxpayers are really concerned about the debt. A lot of people I know are upset that only $61 million was cut. It is going to have to be a lot more than that or China will simply take over.
If we can't even stop overspending, how will we ever pay down the existing amount owed? Isn't it $5 billion per day in interest? What happens when interest rates go back up?
MT1: And I could say just as many people in my areas are doing the "Where's the Job's Mr. Boehner" routine. We all tend to associate with people who share our opinions, that does not mean that a majroity of people share it. I try to always assume it's a 50-50 split until I see otherwise.
I thought it was 4 billion a day but I might be light. Even at four billion a day, our debt service costs us ONE TRILLION, 460 BILLION a year. And that is before the first dime is spent. Before the first bill is paid, before the first government worker or serviceman is paid.
This issue has gone supercritical. It cannot continue. The cuts from the House are just windowdressing at best. We need cuts of the 300 to 400 billion range per year,...every year. And there is PLENTY of room for these cuts. That's how bloated our Federal Government has become.
Everyone is talking about Cuts, when ALL of the problems here WOULD have been solved by ENDING THE BUSH TAX CUTS...how come That is not mentioned?? Oh, I get it, the Repubs are trying to strangle the Govt in the bath tub still: It gets in the way of their handlers making Trillions instead of measly lil old Billions, on OUR backs....
Lets go back to the Eisenhower era level of taxes, ya know, 90% for the top earners, no special considerations for Capital Gains etc..we had the best ever % of people employed and a single wage earner family was able to buy a house, feed the family, have a car and STILL put away money (save) for retirement. Time to tax the hell out of the Too-Rich-To-Fail crowd that is sitting on top of TRILLIONS of Dollars and are STILL not hiring...Why, to make this Black President look bad of course, and to strangle the nasty, evil govt of course...Sheesh, WAKE UP AMERICA!!!
The republicans are not serious about the sacrosanct military.. they can cut" 18 billion a MONTH" from the military budgets ! AND REFUSE TO !!! And still have money and NO aid to ANY FOREIGN COUNTRY'S....ITS JUST NOT IN our BUDGETS !
Not to worry. The stimulus money that Obama spent is creating millions and millions of nice fat green jobs as we speak. It's all being taken care of. Just call the bank and tell them not to worry either. LOL
Besides, why work, when you can draw unemployment for years and just take life easy??
I am asking a serious question. You don't think any of those corporate people you were so glad to give tax breaks to might caugh up a couple jobs in the near future, do you? It would be ever so nice to see them give something back. Guess we should not have trusted the slimy bastards to do the right thing. They are after all in it for the profit.
But the truth of the matter is that the decent paying, manufacturing jobs with benefits and.......dare I use the word?.....a pension?
Those jobs are gone. Gone for good and not coming back. Unless Americans are willing to work for $2.00 a day and no benefits. We have priced ourselves out of our own jobs. Doesn't matter who is in office.
Along comes Obama and in his well-delivered State Of The Union speech, he urges us to look to the future and use our ingenuity and inventive nature to come up with new technology that will bring back prosperity to America. Wow, got my pulse up just writing that. LOL
Question. Can you think of any innovation, product, process, whatever...that can't be produced much cheaper overseas?? Of course not.
Well I guess you really do not want your country's future generations to have a better life than you have been able to have due to the efforts of those who fought for better working conditions for the working class. Gee, what a prince you are. When you die, maybe you can take what ever little bit your greedy little soul was able save and shove it up your rear and take it to your grave with you.
I am just giving you your overdue dose of reality. Sorry if it makes you gag, as I didn't sugercoat the pill.
As for me, I am insignifuicant in the overall scheme of things. I would not want to be young and married with kids in this job market. I saw the change and I know where we came from.
It is funny watching these Republicans talk about deficits when they just demanded and got an extension of Bush tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires that added over $800 billion to the debt. Then they are turning around and slashing and burning the middle class and poor because we are supposedly "broke". Well if that is the case, then why are you giving millionaires and billionaires huge tax breaks that we are borrowing $800 billion to pay for? If they want to restore fiscal sanity, dump the billionaire tax breaks. That is $800 billion in savings right there.
Gee, Keating Five, are you refering to the Obama Tax Continuation Bill? Ah, didn't the President want to reach across the aisle to get a bipartisian resolution? Well, he got it and he has ownership. If you have issues, you should address President Obama rather than bit3h about it.
Keating. What did you pull that # out of? The truth of the matter is that if the "rich were taxed double their rate in 2011 the total government revenue from every dollar earned in the USA would go from ABOUT .40 TO .41 OF EVERY DOLLAR EARNED. Think that is gonna be enough? Do you just catch a headline on MSNBS once in a while and run with it?
Iv'e been doing some figureing too and if I understand the Obama tax cut extension, it only taxes the "rich" at 35% of taxable income. If it hadn't been extended to the "rich", their tax rate would have gone up to 39%. That's a whopping 4% difference. What does that translate to in dollars? I don't think very much.
It sounds like the Keating Five are confusing net worth with taxable income. I could be worth hundreds of billions and have no taxable income. I would never miss a meal because I am filthy rich, but I wouldn't owe any taxes unless I had income.
Get real. If the government shuts down, that mens no money for the troops, no social security, no medicare, no social security, no medicaid, no EBT, no disaster aid to states, so that will bring down garbage collection in some places. I remember the garbage collectors strike in NYC. People wrapped up garbage like gifts and place the presents in theirs cars hoping it would be stolen.
Without government money to states for long enough, public hospitals could shut down in states that are already broke. Police, firefighters, some doctors and nurses are public employees. We'll be like Belgium. Do you know that Belgium hasn't had a functioning government since July because the French speaker and Flemish speakers can't agree on anything? They sound like our two parties Although in Belgium, they actually have French, Flemish and German speakers in different regions. It's a small country, so it isn't being reported on here.
We will have class warfare if Beck and Hannity don't stop pushing for it with their lies and innuendos. Fox news viewers are the most uninformed people in the history of the modern world. It's okay to keep watching Fox for the comedy, but also get the real news from sources outside the United States, so the information is more balanced. Beck would be funny if his lies weren't so dangerous. Even al Zawahi from al Qaeda has given up on Egypt. In his last video statement, he said that Egypt is in trouble because it has become secular. He is worried about the fate of the people because they are not following the Muslim way. Seems Al Qaeda knows that there will not be any Caliphate in Egypt or anywhere else. It only exists in the mind of Glenn Beck.
Just can't stop blaming all the problems on Beck and Palin. If the world stops because government shuts down, it only proves that it is too big and too powerful...this would not even be a problem if the states were allowed to function without all of the "assistance" they get.
Raising taxes only prolongs the spending addiction. More revenue to Washington is like giving more cocaine to a group of addicts. Very stupid proposal.
Git her done! Shut her down! Get Obammy off the tax payers back and out of DC.... Brilliant! When the smoke clears guess who'll be left standing? I guess the monthly mad dash to the mailbox might get a little delayed for the free lunchers. That sure breaks my heart.
Read MY Lips Speaker Boehner:
Bring it ON!
Shut it ALL down! Nothing will tick of the tea baggers faster!
Wait until Granny doesn't get her Socialized Security check... and has to eat cat food!
After all, Boehner's only the Weeper of the House! So much for 'leadership' LOL
"Wait until Granny doesn't get her Socialized Security check... and has to eat cat food!"
Careful, there, Feisty- these A** H***s running the house today wouldn't much care who eats cat food, as long as it's not THEIR mother or grandmother.
And Brian from Seattle- don't forget- they WANT failure. Rush said so.
Yeah I know Drive-by. Anything to drive the unemployment figures back up to neck breaking levels.
61 Billion is cut from the 1.3 trillion and you people are complaining. What are you complaining about, I would had cut more than 61 Billion.
I have to ask, the people complaining, do you have jobs or you don't care where the money goes? You like that the country borrows money from China?
Please define failure. Something has to be done about the debt. Obama knows it, he just won't take any steps to actually do anything about it.
Does China have to lend to us forever? What happens if they simply stop? Is there another source of money? Of course not. So the only thing to do then is print more money. That will not work well for anyone.
They will spend $1.65 trillion more than they have, this year alone. That is failure, a failure to budget, a failure to allocate, a failure to live within your means.
How many House or Senate members do you think will go "road" like the WI members, rather than vote on any bills?
Pelosi thought it was a great idea. Big surprise, right?
One thing is certain.
@Edward
I can assure you that Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will retain her senate seat, so drop your number down to 21.
Conserve...,
Only need to gain 3 seats to win the majority in the senate. Then that means a change in senate majority leader too.
Congratulations, Steeler fan;
Correction:
-wiki
http://newsjunkiepost.com/2011/02/20/may-1933-hitler-abolishes-unions/
And that is why, GOP have been steadily getting rid of manufacturing jobs, which has hurt all of Americans, to disemble the Unions and make them powerless.
Boehner , Oconnell, Teabaggers etc etc. only care about their Political position and what they can gain and nothing at all about this country and the people in it. What will they and their Million air friends do when they have killed all of us off ? Whos backs will they ride then and what will happen to the gravy train they are on now?
Mich Res
Talking about killing the economy. No Unemployment Payments, no Social Security Payments, no government Purchase Orders.
That what you really want Tea Party? The recovery would tank and we would go into a depression in no time.
Paul,
If the governement doesn't pass teh CR, then there is no infrastructure to issue the checks.
So the Senate better get cracking on it. Oh wait, they're out of town. Darn!
If they were so worried, why did they take off for a week? How can you justify that? Didn't they do this last year as well?
Ha.. they take a week off at this time every year.
That's fine. Maybe the Senate will debate/pass the CR as is in a couple of hours. There's probably nothing to worry about.
How many "alternative" bills should the House consider, you know, before the Senate gets off it's lazy butt and gets to work?
One that doesn't cater so heavily to the Tea Party would be a good start. Having that in his back pocket to produce and ram through would be the best bet. The CR is going to die in the senate. Sorry. It just is.
JoAnna ~
How many are there?
thetotas ~
About how republicans justified their obstructionism for the past two years, and about how Scott Walker justifies introducing $140 million in tax cuts for the wealthy into what he claims is a deep, long-standing deficit crisis. It's the new government paradigm.
The really good news is that if the government is shut down through April 15th, we all get an automatic free tax extension.
You already got an extension.
This year it is on the 18th.
Looks like the GOP is calling your bluff Obama.
Umm..
Smiff- who cares? The wealthy got their continued tax breaks. That's all that REALLY matters, right?
Short Memory huh JS1?
JS1:
And this delaying tactict isn't legal then, you are saying? That is certainly what you are implying.
Pelosi passed a budget? If it was passed then where is it?
How much was it for?
Hey folks, don't worry about the budget, isn't that what happened last year prior to the election? The Democratic Party thought it in the best interests of their Party NOT to pass a budget.......now what is the issue with the Republicans not showing their budget yet?
I must have forgotten this Brian, for I don't recall this event happening. All I recall reading in the media print was the Dems pulled the budget from the process.
JS1 ermm. this conversation isn't about Wisconcin, how did you bring them into it?
JoAnna ~
Hey Buzz! There's that 'p' word again! lol
Guess John didn't get the memo - that's SO last week!
"..he chose to punt..."
Saaayyyyyyy......there's an echo in here. Paid posters shouldn't use last week's mass-ditributed buzz-phrase. It makes you all look, well, suspicious somehow.
Ooops- Feisty, crossed in the mail.....
Obama on entitlements, January 2009
"What we have done is kicked this can down the road. we are now at the end of the road and are not in a position to kick it any further," he said.
"We have to signal seriousness in this by making sure some of the hard decisions are made under my watch, not someone else's"
Heck with punt. I like the liberal "kick the can down the road" so much better.
Well if the word "punt" is all you can attack...so be it. (oops, did I do it again?)
what is paid poster?
MT1,
There is documetned evidence that both the Dems and Repbulicans use paid help to go onto opposing boards and post their view point like mad.
And how many on this board do you think write daily for profit?
Could be like herding cats, though.
grats on getting your question answered. ;)
Congrats Steeler Fan!
What a nice consolation 'prize'! ;o)
Someone had to knock Grimey off the Boiler Room pedestal!
Good for you Steeler Fan, and a good question indeed.
Hey Stiller Fan, it is a shame that the President just didn't distribute the points as he has wants to distribute the wealth. Guess that even with the 12 points we turned over, we still would have won. Now that would be a "fair" program I could vote for.l
g
Mr. Boeher,
If you go through with this stunt you and your hate mob will have hell to pay.
Yes Muffintop,
I thought it was 4 billion a day but I might be light.
Bob,
Even the House budget just passed only cuts 60 billion in spending. This is just 4% of the 1.5 Trillion budget.
Just 4%. If we can't cut just 4% off the bloated budget, then we are all doomed.
Where are the jobs going to come from?
Jennifer,
Not to worry. The stimulus money that Obama spent is creating millions and millions of nice fat green jobs as we speak. It's all being taken care of. Just call the bank and tell them not to worry either. LOL
Besides, why work, when you can draw unemployment for years and just take life easy??
Edward
I am asking a serious question. You don't think any of those corporate people you were so glad to give tax breaks to might caugh up a couple jobs in the near future, do you? It would be ever so nice to see them give something back. Guess we should not have trusted the slimy bastards to do the right thing. They are after all in it for the profit.
Sorry Jennifer,
But the truth of the matter is that the decent paying, manufacturing jobs with benefits and.......dare I use the word?.....a pension?
Big government and the Obama tsars.
Jennifer,
I am just giving you your overdue dose of reality.
Right Jed233,
Iv'e been doing some figureing too and if I understand the Obama tax cut extension, it only taxes the "rich" at 35% of taxable income.
If the gov shuts down, does the IRS go with it? If so. COUNT ME IN!
Beck and Palin are a good start. They aid in the dumbing down of America. In my view, I would raise taxes across the board.
No Job1,
Raising taxes only prolongs the spending addiction. More revenue to Washington is like giving more cocaine to a group of addicts. Very stupid proposal.
Yes, it would work. We have the lowest taxes in 50 years.
Git her done! Shut her down! Get Obammy off the tax payers back and out of DC.... Brilliant! When the smoke clears guess who'll be left standing? I guess the monthly mad dash to the mailbox might get a little delayed for the free lunchers. That sure breaks my heart.
Spoke like someone who doesn't have any idea of how to solve the problem. More dumbing down of America.
jed233===the ones left standing will be the ones that got us into this mess. Yes, I'm talking about eight years of Bush and Company.
