House passes measure stripping Planned Parenthood funding

From NBC's Shawna Thomas and Mark Murray
As expected, Indiana Rep. Mike Pence's (R) amendment to strip federal funding for Planned Parenthood passed the House by a 240-185 vote. Ten Democrats joined the GOP majority, while seven Republicans voted against the measure.

It is very unlikely that the measure would pass the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Seriously?!? NASCAR? Do you have a link to that you can share?

Kat, The Army, national Guard and Air Force all sponsor NASCAR racing teams. The Army spends around $7,000,000 from what I have seen reported.

Sarah Palin requested and got 27 million dollars for tiny Wasilla, including building a sports center, when she was governor - and Republicans on this board are saying the government shouldn't fund health services for young women - the hypocricy of Republicans is overwhelming.

Amy....you certainly wouldn't want us to double-dip for Planned Parenthood, would you?

Obamacare is going to make sure that EVERY citizen has "government approved" healthcare, so why would we need Planned Parenthood?

You wouldn't want to be a hypocrit, would you?

Oh well, lets just block it in the Senate and put these crazy Republicans back in their place.

Job1.....why would you want to block it in the Senate when Obamacare is going to make sure every American buys "government approved" healthcare? There will be NO NEED for Planned parenthood if everybody is insured, right?

Unless, you want to still make sure that pimps can have their foreign sex slaves treated too!

Actually you know that they are looking up all the fine print with Obamacare to try and prove you wrong. Fortunately, I have better things to do than go that deep into a thread on any subject

                    Anyway. Your point was, again?

Oh, I see. Well, I don't claim to know all the nuances of Obamacare, but it seems to me that giving everyone insurance isn't quite the same thing as making sure they have access to services. De-funding Planned Parenthood is the same thing, just a little less violent, as killing abortion providers and scaring them out of town, like they do in the "true American" heartland. It may be legal, and there may be insurance, but if no one will give you services, then you're plum out of luck. And there have been some laws either passed or proposed that would allow doctors not to provide services and relieve them of the obligation to tell patients where they might go to get them.

Is that what you're looking for?

@Alex-307327 (Abortion isnt murder, so the state isnt funding genocide).

Abortion IS murder. If it isn't murder , then why isn't the procedure ever filmed like live births are? Every other kind of medical procedure is filmed for some sort of program on Discovery channel, etc. So why isn't Abortion filmed? If supporters are so positive about Abortion, then I expect they would be calling up the Networks and requesting Abortion procedures presented on the air . That way they can spend the evening on the couch with popcorn, while joyfully watching one of their favorite shows. I'm not being glib when I say this either. I'm looking forward to hearing about Abortion supporters trying to get their 'good procedures' on the air.

oh and please don't wait too long - how many years has it been and no live abortions on TV?

                      @redhairedgirl

Wow -- way to take it out of context and make it sensational.

The reason abortions aren't filmed for entertainment is because they are NOT entertaining. There is nothing "fun" about an abortion, and the fact that you would think abortion-supporters would rally around the idea of plastering them all over television says a lot about your way of thinking. The fact that you would trivilize and equate something as painful and emotionally gut wrenching as abortion to that of a reality television show only proves you do not fully understand what it means to have the option to have an abortion.

I don't know how old you are, and I don't know if you know your history, but women were DYING in attempt NOT to have children. First, with back alley abortions, then coat hangers, then crochet needles, and then, throwing themselves down the stairs. Not all women are in loving, healthy marriages with good husbands and enough money to support a family. Some women are raped or victims of incest. Some women were raped by their husbands. Some women don't CHOOSE to get pregnant. With no other recourse, the women, in the past, did what they HAD to do, not what they WANTED to do.

Even if a pregnancy is planned, there is NO GUARANTEE that it will go well. A lot of women suffer from the baby growing outside of the womb, or have a fetus diagnosed with tay-sachs. If you know anything about either of these, you know how painful they both are, and you know that a baby born with tay-sachs will die a slow, miserable, painful death, probably before the age of 4. A woman faced with a decision to abort a baby that is either KILLING HER (thus, if it kills her, especially in the early stages of pregnancy, the baby wouldn't survive outside the mother to begin with) or watching that baby slowly suffer and die because of an incurable disease... Well, I wouldn't want to be in that woman's shoes, and I'm sure you wouldn't, either.

But if it came down to it, I'm sure you'd make SURE you had the child, regardless of whether it could kill you or the child would die or not. If you were raped, or you were molested by a family member, or a victim of incest, and all of these things resulted in a pregnancy, I'm sure you would have the child, simply because you believe abortion is murder. If you had an abortion, you'd be a murderer, regardless of the how or the why you got pregnant.

If you think abortion is murder, that is your opinion, but that REALLY isn't the central issue here. The government pulling their funding from Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with abortion, as PP doesn't use the federal funds for abortion. It is everything else -- the birth control, the PAP smears, the tests for STDs and cancer, the family planning services, etc -- that is losing the funding.

Steve, it's men like you -- with that kind of "keep your legs closed and you won't get pregnant" way of thinking -- that make women (probably your mother included) want to shake the ever-living hell out of you.

Have you ever had sex with a woman, Steve? If you have, did you use a condom? Or was she on the pill? Could you or she AFFORD condoms or the pill? If you answered yes to any or all of these, you're lucky. But let's say, by chance, the condom broke or the pill didn't work and she got pregnant. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that the pregnancy was unplanned. Would you tell her she should have kept her legs closed to you? Do you tell every woman you've ever wanted to sleep with that she should keep her legs closed? Would you blame the pregnancy on her? Knowing your already assinine comments, you probably would, but let me say this -- KEEP YOUR PENIS IN YOUR PANTS!

Women don't climb on top of themselves and get pregnant. It takes two to tango, buddy, and if you think the ol' "keep your legs closed" mentality will work, you're sorely mistaken.

Have you ever even THOUGHT of all the thousands and thousands of women who are victims of rape, incest, and molestation? What about THOSE women? Should they have "known better" and "kept their legs closed," too?

As a woman in a committed relationship, with a trusting, loving, supporting partner, I know firsthand just how terrifying a pregnancy scare or a condom break can be. I've been there -- I've done that -- and I never want to feel that way again. I've bought the morning after pill (it's NOT the abortion pill, so, don't go there) and known what it was like to shell out $20 for a box of condoms that broke and $60 for a pill to correct a mistake that wouldn't have been a mistake if the condom had worked. I never want to be terrified and not ready to have a baby. I never want to have to sit down with my boyfriend and tell him that I was sick and didn't know it. I never want to tell him I was raped and didn't get help.

No woman has PROTECTED, SAFE, HEALTHY sex, and hopes to get pregnant just so she can have an abortion. No woman HOPES to be raped or molested or be a victim of incest. No woman goes out looking to get an STD.

So many people think Planned Parenthood only provides abortions, but it doesn't. It provides women with family planning. FAMILY PLANNING meaning that it provides women with health care if they DO decide to have a baby. It provides them with cervical cancer screening, STD/HIV/AIDs testing, and birth control. It provides men and women -- EVEN TEENAGERS -- a place where they can go and have complete and total privacy and confidentiality. It provides anyone sexually active with FREE CONDOMS so they DON'T spread disease or make babies they don't want being made. It provides women with their yearly annual physical exam and early detection for illness -- which is VITAL when women are constantly at risk for things like HPV, STDs, and breast cancer. It is one of the few, affordable, places where a woman can go and be HONESTLY given all of her options. It's a place where men can go to make sure they aren't riddles with disease and unaware of it!

When the eliminates their funding of Planned Parenthood, hundreds upon THOUSANDS of women will be out of options. There will be no place for an uninsured woman to go when she needs birth control or rape counseling or an STD test. Sex is pleasurable, but it is also a risk, and the women who go to Planned Parenthood are making sure to take PREVENTATIVE measures -- measures that will prevent them from becoming sick or pregnant. If Planned Parenthood loses its funding, women lose their options.

This isn't about relgion. This isn't about "pro-choice" verses "anti-abortion." This isn't about when you think life begins or doesn't. This is about WOMEN'S HEALTH and their RIGHTS to their bodies. This is about women being denied access to affordable health care. This is about women being told they can do whatever they want, but aren't allowed to decide what they want to do with their own bodies. This is about women being told it's better to have unprotected sex than go to the clinic for free condoms. This is about women being told they should shut their mouths (and according to Steve, their legs as well) and simply accept that they cannot be tested for STDs or breast cancer. This is about women being told they cannot be screened early or given the HPV vaccine that could prevent them from getting cervical cancer. This is about women being denied the right to choose to have a baby or not. This is about women who choose to have a baby and want that baby to be healthy. This is about women being denied access to doctors who can tell them if there is something wrong with their pregnancy. This is about women who want to adopt rather than abort and need a place to go for the information. This is about rape victims being told they don't DESERVE counseling or help. This is about women being told to go back to the days of crochet needles, coat hangers, back alleys, and throwing themselves down the steps. This is about rape and incest and molestation victims being told they have to have the baby anyway.

This is about your sister, your mother, your girlfriend, your wife, your best friend -- the WOMEN in your lives -- being told they DO NOT MATTER.

A federal child support law that automatically has a minimum of 1500 dollars a month PER CHILD

Maybe I don't know all the ins-and-outs of what Planned Parenthood does. But, what I would like to know is why it is a right to receive all these services on the cheap? Women have a right to have sex, sure. But, is it up to the rest of the American public to tell her whether or not she's knocked up or not through a PP pregnancy test? One way to know for certain is to not have sex. But, that's seems like far too much responsibility or too Draconian an existence. I'm against abortion and I know federal funding does not provide for the procedure (though I'd be interested to know how the money is allotted to make sure it doesn't). Getting a pap smear and other humane services seems like something I could stand behind, but it seems that most of what tends to be argued for is less responsibility (or patience) on the part of woman and more responsibility put on the backs of American taxpayers.

That being said, while federal funding does not provide for abortions, abortions are the #1 money-maker for Planned Parenthood. So, in the event that federal funding is pulled entirely (which we all know it won't be--even when the Republicans retake the Senate), abortions will simply become a little more expensive to offset the cost.

Furthermore, Planned Parenthood is a RACIST organization. It was started by a woman influenced heavily by Nazi ideologies and even today, 90% of ALL PP locations are in urban centers where the populations are largely Hispanic and black. This is a documented and verifiable fact. So much so that PP has worked hard to distance itself from their founder's work and words. This is not unlike major companies distancing themselves from their part in the slave trade or Barack Obama distancing himself from Jeremiah Wright. BlackGenocide.com is a great resource that bears out much of PP's work in America's cities.

Let's be honest, if we heard our churches had great worship, awesome sermons, and made people feel welcome, but they killed every 5th person to walk in the door, we'd be outraged. That's what PP does. If we heard our grocery stores were handing out free food and formula for babies, but were killing every 5th customer, we'd make the sacrifice and buy from a different grocer, even if we felt we couldn't afford it. We'd call these acts EVIL.

Planned Parenthood does some good things for women. This is undeniable. But, they also do some very, very, very EVIL things to children. In the great words of Ronald Reagan, "I notice all of the people who are pro-abortion have already been born."

As a woman (don't be fooled by the screenname), I can appreciate the need for abortion in the cases of rape and incest or the life of the mother.

However, if I choose to, say, walk across the freeway during rush hour, I know the chance that I am taking. When I am hit and break both my legs or am paralyzed, I can't go back and say, "Wait. I didn't mean for that to happen. Make it go away." I have to live with the consequences of my choice.

Children today are not being taught that actions and choices have consequences - happy ones and sad ones. Adults create TV shows and movies glorifying sex with no consequences or responsibility. It's so sad and disappointing.

During Chris Matthews discussion this date, the lady from the Susan B. Anthony whatever place, made a startling and disturbing statement....she said that PP is involved in the sex trade of women. I couldn't believe my ears or that Chris Matthews didn't press her on that accusation. She didn't say PP MIGHT be involved but that PP IS involved. This is a serious accusation and I would like to know from her not only what forensic evidence she has to back her statement up, but also to know, since she says it is FACT that PP is involved in the illegal sex trade of women, when she reported it to law enforcement and what they have done since. For her to make such a statement and have not immediately contacted law enforcement with her "forensic" (that which will stand in a court of law) evidence is reprehensible. How can she know this is going on and not do something about it! I'm outraged by this comment and as a mother who myself and now my daughter receives services from PP, I demand to know just what the F__— she's talking about and if in fact it is not true, she should be held criminally liable!

We are now in the age of DOUBLESPEAK. First Congress outlawed public funds for ABORTIONS. Now Congress is about to outlaw public funds for BIRTH CONTROL & other PP services. So I suppose what is being said by Congress is it is UNAMERICAN to do anything other than HAVE THE BABY.

The OVERRIDING FOREGONE CONCLUSION is: teens WILL be teens, and WILL exercise their GOD-GIVEN BIOLOGICAL PREROGATIVE, and WILL HAVE SEX. What Congress is telling these teens -- and any other age-group by the way -- is that the only way to prevent having children is to ABSTAIN FROM SEX.

What Congrss is thus trying to do is to ENFORCE ABSTINENCE by way of DISALLOWING ABORTION AND BIRTH CONTROL, thusly BOOKENDING the INSTINCTUAL SEX MATTER neatly out of SIGHT OF THE SPIRIT.

SEX RECREATION IS A GOD-GIVEN INSTINCT. SEX RE-CREATION IS A BIOLOGICAL POSSIBILITY, yet it is NOT AT ALL A FOREGONE CONCLUSION EVEN IN THE ABSENCE OF BIRTH CONTROL. NOWHERE IN MY BIBLE DOES GOD FORBID THE USE OF BIRTH CONTROL MEASURES OF ANY KIND -- INCLUDING ABORTION.

THE BREATH OF LIFE is the ORIGINAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE ONSET OF LIFE FROM A CLAY FORM. I am not ABOUT to tell GOD I am going to CHANGE the definition of LIFE to exclude the Breath of Life. If you have heard that their is only ONE UNFORGIVEABLE SIN, you might want to consider that telling GOD how to run HIS KINGDOM is tantamount to the ONE UNFORGIVEABLE SIN -- BLASPHEMY of the HOLY SPIRIT.

ABORTION OF AN UN-VIABLE CLAY FORM FETUS IS NOT TAKING LIFE, AS LIFE HAS NOT YET BEEN CONVEYED.

CONGRESS GOP ARE AGAIN ATTEMPTING TO INJECT QUESTIONABLE RELIGIOUS TENENT INTO PUBLIC LAW. This is as despicable as SATAN gets, folks: preying on the feeble-minded to override PUBLIC HEALTH.

                                              In GOD's name we pray;

                                              Amen.

                                              LeeRoy Spirit

Where are the Jobs Pence ? Where are the jobs Republicans ? I thought that was your number one priority ? You have propossed more legislation to limit a womans right to choose than any other issue so far. How does that create jobs ? Liars. Every one of them.

Where are the Jobs JH? Congress doesn't create jobs JH, the private sector does, unless you are asking about government job creation.

You could ask that same question to the President who for the first two years of his administration, didn't create jobs either. But he did save jobs there for awhile with his unique report on jobs saved that even the office generating the report had difficulty addressing when questioned in detail about the mechanics about the generation.

What was the Obama priority when elected? Bail-outs, financial services industry bailouts, car bailouts, union bailouts, stimulus and health care. Could it be possible to have more than one priority in your agenda?

Other than create a failed HC plan, and generate massive amounts of debt, what major impact has this administration had so far?

Planned Parenthood, most definitely, does abortions. Each affiliate has been mandated by PPFA headquarters to do abortions or lose their association with Planned Parenthood. In New York state, NYS Medicaid pays a ton of money to these clinics to do abortions. For a not for profit organization, this is quite lucrative.

I don't think the head honchos are poor women. Not even close. They get healthy salaries while the local workers make peanuts. Planned Parenthood is just another not for profit business, who has lots of "profit" and they can fund raise in the local communities as well. I say cut a lot of the funding, if not all. Let us not forget that 1. They can fund raise. 2. They get state reimbursement for services but at a higher rate than the average doctor.

In reference to all the comments regarding women "keeping their legs closed": I suggest that men can always keep their pants zipped, or - gasp - take the responsibility to wear one of those latex things they sell in drug stores across the country. In case you haven't noticed, women don't impregnate themselves, so why the double standard? Men are equally responsible for unwanted pregnancies, so my fellow males - and some very old fashioned women - get over your 1959 attitudes and behave like grown ups.

In terms of not wanting to "pay for" someone else's unwanted pregnancy or family planning, why do you have babies yourselves that I - as one who never had children and attended private schools and universities - subsidize by paying school property taxes, and state and federal income taxes to support public education to educate your kids? I also have to pay a higher marginal federal income tax rate to make up for all of the extra deductions, tax credits and other goodies you receive from the government because YOU chose to have children. I support these efforts to help people with kids out, but get real about "subsiding" other people. Everyone in this country is subsidized for something.

Finally, people who don't support family planning for financial reasons, or because they support "family values" seem more likely than others to NOT support Aid to Families with Dependent Children, school lunch programs and the like. What do you want, great taste or less filling?

The Repubs cut the funding for women who can't afford medical (there is no money for abortion coverage in the prgram) and now they have voted to cut the WIC program for the poor. If they get the chance to break the unions and put the working class in third world income status, will that be enough for them? Do you think that Jesus Chirst would have done such things to the poor? Do you think that God will forgive the greedy? Do you think Republicans believe in God or is greed their god?

What about the getting rid of the oversight of the mega corporations allowing them to get away with polluting? Is that okay with you? When the EPA gets gutted by the Republicans and people start having illness from polluted soil, the water is undrinkable and the poor go hungry, I hope you feel real good about the minute stinky little bit of profit you derived from being a suck up for something you will never get in your f--ing life. I am not in a union and I have never taken welfare but I hope I am dead before I see the world the way some of you do.

Maybe those who support abortion rights stoop to name calling, those who oppose abortion rights only set bombs and murder. Planned Parenthood keeps millions from getting pregnant (maybe some of them couldn't resist Steve and opened up for him too.)

Jennifer, I support Abortion rights for women. People on this site keep saying that Planned Parenthood does not provide abortions they do. They also perform lots of other services.
