From NBC's Ali Weinberg and MSNBC's John Bailey
This year's Conservative Political Action Conference was full of trial balloons from potential 2012 Republican hopefuls. Here's a look at some of the most popular phrases - and former presidents - invoked during the three-day confab.
Watch the Daily Rundown, Friday, Feb. 14, 2011.

Who doesn't love the over abundance of the 'apology' line?
In order for brain washing to be effective, the subject first must posses a brain...
Almost as good as the Weeper of the House yesterday on MTP - telling David Gregory it's not his 'job' to tell people what to think? WTF?
I'll give credit - the righties know how to latch onto a phrase and beat it to DEATH!
One conservative screaming over another as to WHO is more conservative!
Awww, come on Fiesty old gal. You need to lighten up on Boehner. We all know it is your job to tell us what to think. Or is it your position it is Obama's? How about Reid?
Pelosi tried for a long time, but look where that got her. :(
The really cool thing for you is there is just no difference of opinion in the democratic party. Although it has to stick in your craw that the whole dog gone narrative relates to budgets, debt and deficit. Brought to you courtesy of those darn "teabaggers."
WTF = win the future. GO TEAM!
Hey there Fiesty, what's the matter, cat got your tongue?
You seem real good at the asking/asserting part, but not so good at the responding/backing up your position part.
Sorry guys, but 2 CPAC stories, Tea Party story, Shirley suing Bietbart .......
and Iran is shooting demonstrators in the streets?
I realize thinkformeprogressive hasn't had time to post anything yet for the regulars to cut and paste.... but really?
And if you're waiting for Obama to come out and tell the regime he supports the demonstrators and that is time for them to go, you might want to recall that Obama only throws friends and allies under the bus, not the guys that hate us, the guys that are the largest state sponsors of terrorism, that rule Iran. If you jail Nobel winners like China, that will get you a red carpet visit and state dinner. Mention Russia - Obama comes running with his lease like some furry family member needing a walk for a month.
I just hope the dead this time in Iran are not going for it again because they think Obama will support them, ask for the regime to leave and that this is going to turn out like Egypt.
Interesting, no joe compares Obama to Carter referencing the Iranian take-over while the left here at FR devotedly drones over Obama's wonderful, brilliant handling of Egypt. Now this in Iran a week later.
Karma's weird, huh.
Well, if Obama ever decides to add another director of intelligence, maybe he could hire that guy named Earl. He may not anything, but he does understand Karma.
And that is more valuable than anything Clapper has to offer.
(4 Hours on the "Sound of CPAC" ......... Really?)
Looks like Comcast has tighten the old budgets, eh?
So given the realities, what's the over/under on Schultz? Four weeks and he's toast? I see Matthews is carrying about as many viewers as Family Guy re-runs.
But I am sure that special on Clinton will be very insightful.
It seems some regular conservative posters ignore that during the Iranian uprising over a year ago, President Obama supported the peaceful rights of the protesters and condemned the Iranian government for its brutal response. The U.S. has no diplomatic ties with Iran, no means of directly speaking to their leaders yet somehow conservatives imply that the President only throws our friends and allies under the bus. Odd, since it was G.W. who invaded Iraq to overthrow a brutal dictator who had been at one time a friend and ally but apparently that little nugget is ignored by those who simply dislike President Obama. The US has neither friend nor ally in Iran. Egypt's Mubarak may have been a friend and ally but he was a brutal dictator--perhaps it is time for the US to finally move from cold-war foreign policy mentality which supports dictators for stability purposes to foreign policy supporting the rights of people in all countries, ally or not. It is up to the people of Iran to seek every means possible to overthrow their own brutal leaders and the less the U.S. has to do with it, the better for the Iranian people.
And you are a Good case for Beer Goggles
I've never seen her, Steve. What's she look like?
Now, Drive By, how positively gallant of you.
I am just positive she is cute as a button.
That bunch of loons sounded nothing like the ones by the lake that used to lull me to sleep when I was a child!
What's troubling, is the Teabaggers lie of omission.
The obvious omission is absolutely no mention of Bush and his fiscal policies!
Why, what was wrong with the policies of the Bush Administration.....why keep going waaay back to Reagan!
Okay, I've about had it with this myth about President Obama "apologizing for America". He's far too diplomatic to say it, so I will - he's never been apologizing to the rest of the world for America, he's been apologizing for the last President - you know, the one who told the rest of the world "You're either with us or you're against us". The one who so many countries protested against and burned in effigy while he was in office (not that I condone that for any President). The one who recently had to cancel a trip to Switzerland - two years AFTER he left office - because of all the potential protests and threatened legal action by human rights groups.
Sorry, we Democrats aren't supposed to mention his name anymore. But from the clip above, apparently his own party can't, either. Let's see..... ReaganReaganReaganReaganReaganReagan..... yet not one mention of either of the two Republican Presidents we've had since Reagan.
I'm sorry, what was their name again?
that's the 'job-killing' sounds of CPAC, to you, "Libbies".
Ha Ha Ha Ha ....
Amen, JoAnne---I didn't see any placards lauding any Republican Presidents in Tahrir Square, but did see ones that said "Yes We Can, Too". President Obama was forced to spend the better part of the first year of his term apologizing NOT for America but for President Bush. I think the Republicans like to say he apologizes for America because it is a subliminal reminder of the issues that resonate with their base---not one of us, birther, etc., etc. The implication being that a real American doesn't apologize for America.
So true JoAnne and spot on!
After the empty 'he kept us safe' mantra...there is nothing to be said about, well you know who!
JoAnne:
I thought you Liberals claim we are all Americans.
As an American I will stand with any POTUS; Dem or Republican against the REST OF THE WORLD. I will not co-sign on anything THE REST OF THE WORLD has to say about any POTUS.
As an American I will not repeat the BS that THE REST OF THE WORLD has to say about a POTUS.
AS an American I WILL take offense to any POTUS APOLOGIZING to the rest of the world about a former POTUS.
There is validity in "You 're either with me or against me". As we say "Who you rolling with".
As the current AMERICAN POTUS, the Obama administration should have said something the Switzerland in regards to threatening a former POTUS. Yes that is a responsibility that comes with the territory. When he is out of office I think he would want the next POTUS to have his back.
.....And as usual the peanut gallery joins iin with JoAnne.
That is a damn shame.
JoAnne, PA. Great reminder.
President Obama has never apologized but the myth found a voice with the GOP. President Obama did speak about America not being perfect, making mistakes but he also reminded those countries that they, too, had done the same. That part gets lost in the right-wing spin machine. They ignore that he "chided" foreign countries for their own hypocrisy--as reporters commented at the time, no other president had ever been so bold.
Spot on Jaanne - cause it those darn republicans that keep bringing up Regan to compare Obama to. Wait, what's that? It's the liberals that keep doing that. Huh?
ITM -
Believe it or not, I get your point. Yes, we are all Americans. When people in other countries burn our country's flag, that's MY country's flag they're burning too. But I've never subscribed to the theory of "My country, right or wrong". Not in the sixties when I first heard it, and not now. While I try to respect the office of the President, I feel no obligation to blindly support every word or action he or she may ever make - that's one of my freedoms as an American. Not just a freedom, but a responsibility. Let's forget both Bush and Obama for the moment - are there ANY words or actions of a President at which you would draw the line? Or would you defend them no matter what? And getting back to Bush and/or Obama - or any other President - are you saying that no matter what we attack them for on these boards, we would have to turn around and defend them for the very same thing if someone from "THE REST OF THE WORLD" made the same judgment? You would really do that?
By the way, as I was typing the words "My country right or wrong", I got curious as to the circumstances in which they had originated, so I just did a bit of quick research and came up with the following, credited to the People's Almanac:
Stories behind Famous Sayings
The Saying: OUR COUNTRY, RIGHT OR WRONG.
Who Said It: Stephen Decatur
When: 1816
The Story behind It: The speaker was naval hero Stephen Decatur, who had accepted an invitation to a banquet being held in his honor at Norfolk, Va. Many patriotic toasts were made, but Decatur's stood out: "Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong." In 1872, Sen. Carl Schurz of Missouri paraphrased Decatur: "Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right." English author G.K. Chesterton had this to say: "My country, right or wrong is like saying, my mother, drunk or sober."
Sorry for the cut and paste; some people just have a lot better way with words than I do.
Spanky -
I've compared my late father to Reagan on more than one occasion - not politically speaking, but they looked a lot alike. I don't recall ever comparing Reagan to President Obama.
Oh, wait - you said Regan, not Reagan - sorry! Well, as it happens, I've never compared President Obama to that head-spinning, green-puking freak in "The Exorcist", either......
But golly JoAnne it really isn't just about you now is it?
But if YOU have not seen or heard the many comparisons [think the cover of Time] then they must not have occurred.
Spanky -
I don't think my doctor's office even gets Time magazine anymore. Sorry I missed that one. Besides, haven't you heard? We liberals only read Tiger Beat anyway.
JaAnne:
What I was basically saying is "blood is thicker than water". My family and I fight and say things about each other all of the time, BUT, no one else is going to disrespect the family.
We may have our faults BUT, they are OUR faults.
ITM,
Exactly. Thanks for your comments.
JoAnne,
It is that simple.
What's funny, even the most limited, uneducated tribesmen, goat herders, etc. understand this and think down on those who do disrespect their family, their village, their country.......
Yet, from the Harvard genuis to the liberal regulars - you guys never get it.
I try hard to remember that the GOP are indeed human beings, but their childish actions, harsh sarcasm, and intense hatred reminds me of snakes. The GOP cannot be trusted.
Looking at earlier comments, I just have to amend your a bit...
I try hard to remember that the liberal posters on this forum are indeed a human beings, but their childish actions, harsh sarcasm, and intense hatred reminds me of snakes. They cannot be trusted.
I know they are, but who's are these??
Bravo for the prescient analysis of the opposition! You are spot on.
Just trying to show the mirrored imaged on the flip side of the coin. The mantra on both sides is alarmingly exactly the same.
K2mn. I try hard to remember that once republicans were environmentalists, were all about investing in America, all about working hard together to achieve greatness. Then 30 years ago, a republican decided that selfish interests were more important, the environment was there for abusing and using until gone or destroyed.
Stop it. Everybody knows that all dems are good and all republicans are bad. Or are snakes that cannot be trusted. Deep thoughts, as per usual.
...or that lIbs are all 'commies', right, Spanks?
Snakes, according to Richard Pryor, are cool. "They make people run into things".
Naw, not commies, just bad with money. Oddly not so much their own, they like to keep that. Just with other people's money.
Maybe you aren't trying hard enough...:)
Chef Darrell and your other brother Darrell: Your comments are so nice and conciliatory. Way to go, you described yourself perfectly. Tea bag on dude, you are a really good hater.
Thanks tommyboy, I'll be here all week...tip your waitress.
Anyhow, you're the reason I hate liberals. I don't mind democrats, but I hate the sanctimony of libbies. On the flip side, I can't stand conservatives either. Too much religion for my athiestic liking.
So keep on insulting this independent with your childish taunts. You mother must be proud.
Chef-
Just trying to show the mirrored imaged on the flip side of the coin. The mantra on both sides is alarmingly exactly the same.
Exactly! And that was the point I was trying to agree with above. Nuance not spoken here...
danger,
Sorry...just had to spell it out for "them"
If, God forbid, Obama gets re-elected, in a second term his not-too-bright minions will still keep the talking point blaming every disaster on the "previous four years".
Since they love it so much..."blaming Bush" is all they have in their weak arsenal.
But in all serriousness- you honsetly believe the messes created by Bush should all have disappeared within 2 years, no matter WHO won 2008? Is that your understanding of the whole picture? Sometimes screw ups last well beyond the years in which they were created. Think NAFTA, for example. We should never be allowed to mention Clinton, then??
DBO - we should keep digging then? Cause 14 Trillion is not enough debt, we should go for more.
Come on man - we here in MSNBC-land lean forward, don't you know?
"..we shoud go for more.."
Where did I say that? The post was in response to somene not liking it that we bring up Bush in these discussions. Try and stay with us.
Oh, I see DBO - the "mess" is wholly and totally created by Bush? His budget and he approved it/ensured it was approved by the republican congress since '06?
Obama has no role in the current $14Trillion?
So then tell us DBO - how do you feel above Obama's current budget proposal? You like it? You thinnk it will make the debt better or worse?
What is the amount of interest on the existing debt, per day? And you are ok with that? You advocate that we continue to spend money we do not have?
Come DBO enlighten us all: what is your understanding of the "whole picture?" Dems your words amigo, so I may not be able to stay with you, but I have at least read your post.
Yooo Hooo, Mr Speaker: Where are the job-creating bills at?
Odd that I have seen you make that comment one or MAYBE two times before, yet I have not seen you direct it, or anything like it to Mr. Reid.
How come?
And just for fun, what do you think such a bill should look like? Maybe you can help Boehner out. What you got, Drive By?
I got nothing, and Harry's history (phase 1 complete...yada yada yada). See, I'm not the speaker of the house, and I wasn't involved in all the campaign bovine-turdiosis saying what all I was going to do. See, now, how easy that was?
Alright DBO - finally getting it. Campaign was all about cutting the debt. And looky here, but that's the topic of the day, week, month , year. Even the One is in on the fun.
Good times, eh Drive By?
It got lost in the teleprompter.
Uh Oh- gotta go! It's beer-thirthy, and I have to get home and mail my monthly contri to the DNC!
'By, Spanks! Hope you can come out and play tomorrow, too.
What do you find at a CPAC ralley? Nut cakes, spinning around the room.
And you know this Job1 because you were in attendence?
Just joshing you. We know you are just making stuff up. Seems there is a lot of that around here. Pure mindless speculation. Great fun though.
I tell you who really makes stuff up. That is FOX Noise. The carny people that watch them are way out there.
Just stopped in to see if we were still acting like 5th graders and I can see you all should still be in a corner because your not civilized......such behavior from both sides and you wonder why the politicians act like they do....or is it you act like the politicians....don't know don't care....play nice children! Going someplace where ppl talk and have respect for ppls opinion.
I know you are but what am I?
The sound of CPAC? White noise!
