"President Hosni Mubarak’s refusal to step down on Thursday, after a day of rumors galvanized the crowds in Cairo, confronts the Obama administration with a stark choice: break decisively with Mr. Mubarak or stick to its call for an 'orderly transition' that may no longer be tenable," the New York Times says. "To some extent, Mr. Mubarak opened the door for President Obama to appeal even more directly to the protesters, some of whom have felt betrayed by the administration’s cautious approach, saying it placed strategic interests ahead of democratic values. In his speech, Mr. Mubarak said he would not brook foreign interference, suggesting that he was digging in his heels after days of prodding by the United States for 'immediate, irreversible' change."
The Boston Globe’s top story is Egypt: “Hope, disbelief, rage.”
“The federal government’s budget deficit grew by $50 billion in January and is expected to finish the budget year as the highest in history,” AP writes.
NPR previews the coming fight over the budget. The Obama administration unveils its budget Monday.
“Vice President Joseph Biden will deliver remarks Friday as part of a leadership lecture series held at the University of Louisville, the alma mater of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell,” Roll Call writes. “The Kentucky Republican will introduce Biden at the free public event, according to Biden’s office.”
In the latest issue of National Journal, Ron Brownstein credits the soon-to-close DLC for reviving the Democratic Party after its presidential defeats in the 1980s. “As the party revived after the 1980s, the Democratic coalition didn’t evolve as the DLC anticipated: Democrats recovered more by recapturing upscale coastal voters rather than the heartland and Southern working-class whites the DLC had targeted. Yet the group’s legacy is undeniable. The DLC’s insistence that Democrats needed not just new tactics but also a new agenda was indispensable in breaking the Republican lock on the White House.”

Where Are The Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, Jobs! Republicans Promised………………….Republicans Have Spent Their Entire Time On Abortion & Taking Women’s Rights & Placing Government In Our Dr. Offices
Republicans promise $100 billion in spending cuts
Recommendations For Spending Cuts From The American People!
All The New Republican Congress Folk Getting Government Checks From Us Now Want To Cut Jobs For Those Who Sent Them There To Solve Real Problems.
Lead By Example;
Cut Your Checks & Benefits, Perks, Parties, Your Staff Reduce It they don’t need all those AIDES NOW!
Not One Person in congress has come forth and said less cut our Taxpayer Funded Paychecks
Poor Management Caused This Near Depression, it’s called Congress, Especially Republicans who now want to put the Cuts On The Backs Of Ordinary Americans
Teaparty folk couldn’t wait to get paid by the American Taxpayers now they are getting their big Taxpayer funded Paychecks, their health Insurance paid for by us and they are running to cut JOBS-----$100 Million Dollars by throwing Congress mess back to the Taxpayers to cover.
Why isn't congress talking about taking a pay cut and reducing their golden benefits package? I find it amazing they tell the common worker that due to the times pensions and insurance benefits must be cut, yet they continue on for themselves like nothing is happening. Being a congressman for 5 years is the only job I know of that warrants a pension, yet they want you to work 40 years and get much of nothing
REPEAT AFTER ME TERM LIMITS
TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS!!!!!
FREEZE THE SALARIES OF ALL FEDERAL ELECTED OFFICIALS FOR 10 YEARS.
MAKE THEM PAY FOR THEIR HEALTH CARE. Since they are Damm** & Determined to take ours!
LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF STAFFING THEY GET AND
MAKE THOSE STAFFING JOBS GO TO QUALIFIED PEOPLE AND NOT FAMILY OR FRIENDS!!!!!
Well I notice they did not propose cutting their salaries and perks. I reckon those do not count. Hypocrites !!!
If they really want to help the budget deficit, then create jobs. Having more taxpayers (income) will definitely be a good start!
June I agree with you, everyone of them should take cuts its not only the Tea Party, all of them. Here in California when Karen Bass left she gave everyone in her staff a raise, she tried to do this a year ago and was slammed by the public and took it back. Perez was voted in and gave all of his staff raises. Both sides do it, and they could care less how it effects anyone else.
June,
Calm down... the Reps have had a month or so. Obama and the Dems had 2 years and they wasted that time on Obamacare.
Let's wait and see if the Reps have success in voiding this endless stream of regulations that are hampering (in one area) the energy sector. Building nuclear and fossil plants and drilling will immediately open the market for thousands of jobs.
The Reps had 8 years to screw the country up under Bush. The Reps are not the solution.
June,
You demand that " #! All Republicans Must Now Pay For Their "OWN HEALTH CARE"
Fair enough. Following that same reasoning, all Republicans should be exempt from paying taxes, fees, etc. associated with "Government Run helathcare."
Actually, doubletime, I think if they want to remove "healthcare for all" from the laws, then they should opt out of their "government run healthcare". After all, it doesn't look too good to deny the people you represent from the same kind of healthcare insurance you get by representing them!
