Boehner: Lee exit was the 'right decision'

From NBC News:  During his weekly press conference, House Speaker John Boehner made his first public comments on the abrupt resignation of Rep. Chris Lee (R-NY) following reports about inappropriate texting and photos.

"Congressman Lee made his own decision that he thought was in his best interest and the interest of his family," Boehner said.  "I think he made the right decision for himself and his family," he added.

The House leadership has promised "zero tolerance policy" for ethical problems, and they've generally been quick to act when allegations arise. For example, when Rep. Mark Souder admitted last spring that he had an affair with a staffer, he was quickly forced to resign.

Today, Boehner said "I believe that members of Congress should be held to the highest ethical standard. That's what the American people expect."

Boehner "refused to say whether he spoke to Lee or urged him to resign" yesterday, according to the AP.  But he added:  "My conversations with members are private, and they will remain that way."

Yep......yawn.

7 out of the 10 threads up are minor GOP non-stories. What party is the executive branch and controls the Senate, foreign policy.....

How about this.

Obama called for $58 billion for high speed rail Washington DC to New York, Boston.......commuters, right?

What middle class people commute from NYC, Bedford, Boston, etc. to WASHINGTON, D.C.? Isn't it pretty much the rich / pretty darn well to do with great jobs?

What sense does it make for the those that don't have those jobs to pay for / subsidize the transporation of those that do have those jobs? Isn't this the average guy subsidizing the well to do guy?

What about the Volt? Who really pays $41,000.00 for a 150 hp fad car with limited utility? The average guy, or the well to do guy?

And doesn't the average guy help pay $7,500.00 to the well to do everytime they buy one?

I thought Obama was for the little guy.

Nah, just kidding, conservatives know better.

Too bad the libbies don't.

Tunde,

I am pretty sure that the rest of Americans got the same tax extension, plus an extra 2%, because of the SS tax being cut to 4.2% for a year. And besides, if you do your research, the wealthiest--who already contribute about 85% of all the federal income tax dollars--were only going to have their taxes raised 3%, while many of the other areas in our progressive tax system were going to go up 5%. The lowest tax bracket going from 10% to 15%. Of course, that would only hurt those who don't pay taxes anyway.

Oh, and I am pretty sure, that since the GOP was sworn in this past January, that the unemployment rate has already dropped .4%--and with their ability to spin things, the perception will be that they lead the charge, because as we all know perception is 90% of what is believed:)

b dune ya,

Well bless your heart, you almost got it....

........Obama's high speed rail and the Government Motors Volt are the joke.

Tunde,

Well bless your heart, you actually think the rich would pay taxes and not hide their money?

"It is incredible that a system of taxation which permits a man with an income of $1,000,000.00 a year to pay not one cent to his government should remain unaltered."

That was Andrew Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury under Coolidge. 1924 from his book "Taxation".

He wrote that IRS records show 206 people making a million reported in 1916. Then Wilson skyrocketed the taxes and within 5 years there were only 21 people reporting a million.

Then right after Congress enacted tax cuts there were suddenly 207 people reporting a million in 1925.

Funny how that works, huh?

BTW - Revenues from capital gains doubled in 1925 over the revenues in 1924.

Please explain to us just how it is the government creates jobs. Heck I'll settle for your explanation as to how the government creates anything. Please start your analysis for the point of funding: as in where the funding comes from for the government to creat anything.

You do know, right? This is neither a secret or a joke, right?

Not sure how the government creates jobs, but consider this: You drywall houses in a small town. The government opens some sort of center- I don't know, some outlet that hires a bunch of help to process tax payments or something, hell I don't know. The upshot is- they hire a bunch of people. Some of those people want or need to buy houses. The builders of the houses need drywallers.

YOU, a drywall guy, are going to turn down the business, because the buyers of the houses work for the gubmint? Even if the number of jobs you could win bids on might create enough work that YOU could create a couple of jobs yourself, by hiring painters or mudders?

Sometimes I just don't understand these things, I guess.

TA: WHERE R D JOBS???

DBO: Not sure how the government creates jobs

Well, lets see, Nancy Pelosi says the government creates jobs! She said 400,000 jobs would be created, almost immediately, because of ObamaCare. That was nearly a year ago (Signed into law on March 23, 2010). So do you think that happened? Or was Nasty Nancy fibbing? She also said ObamaCare would produce a total of 4 million new jobs, so we all got that to look forward to as well.

And are those jobs seperate from the "Shovel ready" jobs Obama promised?

Hey Spanky the Federal and State Governments have created many jobs through bills it passes that fund things like the construction highways, bridges, tunnels, hydro electrical dams, levies, power lines, canals, ships, planes, tanks, small arms, etc.. That's right the government you seem to think is a do nothing does all the things that make big business life run. And how do they pay for all of those things well through taxes, bonds and the sale of the rights to use of government lands among others.

Thanks for asking.

Ahh Drive By, really?

The government allocates wealth. It decides to open a center. To do that, or anything else it takes money from the private sector. I understand that you and others here will never get that so I fall back to this: Why doesn't the government simply hire everyone who is unemployed?

And Joanna has an excellent point - in fact Obama had to admit there were NO shovel ready jobs. Most of the stimulus went to keep existing government workers. That money is gone. What now, brown cow?

Devie, pray tell, and as I asked above where does the government get the money to pay for all those projects? It's kinda important to trace the money from the source - it is th esource that creates the whole thing. And the source is not the government. But I suspect you know that, right Devie?

Hey Devie you fixing to claim any deductions or exemptions this year on your taxes? If so, why? How about you Drive By- going to itemize this year? Run expenses through a schedule C?

Spanky: Please explain to us just how it is the government creates jobs

Well, drive-thru s'plained it real good. He says that if the guberment need to puts up some drywall, that that makes some jobs for the drywallers. What he doesn't say though is that the gubmerment borrowed the money from some'one, and that some'one at some'point would like that money back. So if you as a indy'vidual max out your credit cards and hire a land'scaping crew to redo yr'lawn, and those people don't get paid cause you had no intention of paying off that credit card of yr's, either the credit card company is out the money and is mad at you, or the landscaping crew is out the money and is mad at you, so who really is ahead on the deal?

dbo - Sometimes I just don't understand these things, I guess

Well I hope I put it all in terms you can understand, I try'd to keep the words to three silly-bulls or less just for you.

Spanky: The government allocates wealth. It decides to open a center. To do that, or anything else it takes money from the private sector.

Sooner or later the government has to get the money to pay off theri loans. Haven't yet though, they just let it ride on that Big Old Credit Card. $1.5 trillion worth this year alone.

So how many jobs will be destroyed when that credit card bill comes due and that big old guberment starts looking for someone to pay for it?

BigBear... let me help you out here...

"In the United States at the end of 2001, 10% of the population owned 71% of the wealth and the top 1% owned 38%. On the other hand, the bottom 40% owned less than 1% of the nation's wealth"... Wikipedia quote.

so I'm well aware that most taxes are paid by the wealthy...as it's supposed to be... if we want to honestly do anythin about the skyrocketing deficits that the Tea Party screams about, then we needed to have let the taxes for the top 2% expire - not to spite them for their wealth, but to help prop up American so that their wealth can continue and American at least maintains the status quo. Because we both know they spending in washington is unstainable. I hope you were being sarcastic when you talk about the 0.4% drop in unemployment being as a result of GOP in office. Because we both know only 36K jobs were created in that month. So we shouldn't really have expected any drop in unemployment, except for the number being what it is - not represetative of true unemployment - probably more like ~15%-18%....

Since the GOP took office, they havent spent 1 day on job promotion.... this is their priority.

  • 1st priority - Repeal HCR
  • 2nd priority - Focus on defunding planned parent-hood
  • 3rd priority - Defeat Obama.
  • 4th priority - cut 1 trillion dollar deficit by 32billion
  • .
  • .
  • .
  • 1000000th priority - create 2 jobs (both female staffers working for John Boner)...lol - I kid.

No where in my post did I mention that government create jobs... so you using it to debate my argument is silly at best... i"ve respected and agreed (and even liked) with some of your post in the past, but your response to this one was a little poor.

And BTW, the reason why I ask, "WHERE R D JOBS" is because it was supposed to be a #1 priority with the GOP... and it obviously is not - judging by the bills they've brought to the floor.

devie: And how do they pay for all of those things well through taxes, bonds and the sale of the rights to use of government lands among others.

Well the government isn't taxing enough to balance their spending now are they? So that means they sell bonds, and pay interest on that debt, plus we'd like to pay down some of that debt at some point. And interest on those bonds hasn't been so bad, fairly low actually, but a funny thing is happening. As inflation edges up, mostly because of QE2, those interest rates for those bonds the government has to purchase are also starting to move up. So financing that hyper-increasing debt of ours is getting more and more expensive.

So do you think that's a good idea Devie, spending more and more of our tax dollars to pay off those ever increasing interest rates on our borrowed money? We're not even talking about paying the debt mind you.

And for all the jobs "created" when the government borrowed all that money, how many jobs do you think will be destroyed when the government has to tax away that money from the people to pay for it?

Bob, I agree that the rich (only some of them) will always find a way to pay less taxes... but that's only a minority or else they wont be paying most of the taxes in the US - as it currently stands.... they laws need to be changed so that those who jump through loop-holes would be more easily identified and holes closed. But in all honesty....that tax cut expiration for the rich should not have passed... I doubt that would help the economy in any way asides from increasing the deficit. Which although I'm a left leaning individual, but I think it needs to be seriously curbed - as it is unsustainable.

Yeah, that ones a real head scratcher. Nancy Pelosi said ObamaCare was going to be a huge job producing dynamo, "400,000 jobs created, almost immediately, and 4 million total". The government must not know how to count those jobs though, because they seem to be missing from the job creation reports every month. Tunde,

I think we are on the same page as far as this is concerned--see below

if we want to honestly do anythin about the skyrocketing deficits that the Tea Party screams about, then we needed to have let the taxes for the top 2% expire - not to spite them for their wealth, but to help prop up American so that their wealth can continue and American at least maintains the status quo. Because we both know they spending in washington is unstainable.

I though, do not agree that we need to raise taxes, but we need to implement a system of taxation that is fair and justifiable. Cut out the deductions and loopholes and tax everyone at the same rate. This will mean that the more a person makes, the more they pay in taxes. Taking away their loopholes and deductions would mean that Warren Buffet might actually pay more than his secretary. And I certainly agree that spending is out of control.

And the .4% thing since they took office, you finally called me on that--the first to do so--that was being sarcastic, but imagine if unemployment did fall .4% for the next 12 months--5% unemployment again. Wouldn't the spin doctors love that:)

Joanna.... you know that anything can be extrapolated to become extreme.... because the example you placed there is truly extreme...and I would certainly hope it wont be that way.

If you look at the taxation in the united states... it's right dead smack on in the middle and somewhat of what is common sense fair and just in most instances. you can have one extreme (Communism), still extreme but less invasive (Socialism)...and then to the other extreme (Super Capitalism - with flat taxation)... neither of this will work in America... and it wasn't what made America strong... what has made America strong is the progressive tax system. This way of taxation places the burden of taxes and developing the country on the rich, while taking less from the poor; and everyone in the middle gets to pay a certain amount - in a progressive manner.

Being born in another country that supports runaway capitalism.... what happens in a system like that is that the middle class is crushed. With some being super wealthy and some being super poor. I truly believe that the progressive tax system is what has made America's middle class strong... and with this strength in the middle class... it even makes the rich even richer - when compared to the world.

What we have today is the percentage of the rich in this nation getting richer and the poor, obviously getting richer. If this trend continues - Bye bye America... it will fall faster than you can say "DROP". The middle class in the USA is the engine of this great nation and it needs to be strenghtened...with what you propose JoannaSmith, if we try to make it fairer for the rich a huge burden would even be placed on more of the middle class (not the poor - they pay too little taxes to be affected anyways as they still will pay almost 0)... which I guarantee will destroy the US as you know it today - I know, i know, I sound like Glenn Beck there - the predictor or doom.

    #1.25 - Thu Feb 10, 2011 5:41 PM EST

I dont know why the "top 2%" is such a point of contention for liberals.

First of all, the rich are adept at concealing their income. Correct? What good is the extra 4% increase in the tax rate going to do if they just conceal and hide their income anyways?? Why are you guys so gung ho about this? It seems like a moot point.

Secondly, if you want to correct the above matter, you should aim for simplifying the tax codes and dealing with the loopholes and excessive deductions and credits. Not by trying to come up schemes to get more invisible revenue from rich individuals who can make their income disappear through a vast array of said loopholes, credits and deductions.

Finally, the Republicans insistence on extending the tax cuts for all has much more to do with small businesses rather than rich individuals. If 70% of this country is employed by small businesses, do you think its a good idea at this time to kick them some more while they are already down?

I swear the liberals would eat their young!

    Tunde,

Sorry, but you are wrong about the rich paying.

Did tax free government bonds never occur to you. The rich putting their money in the government that needs it?

The example I gave was perfect - nothing has changed except their are more and more sophisticated ways for them to hide the money.

Also, you are wrong about flat tax. For example - Take sales tax (in a way a flat tax right) - The average guy buys a $7.00 hamburger combo for lunch. A rich guy goes to a French restraunt, has an Ostrich burger with truffels a couple of glasses of wine, etc. and spends $42.00. He just paid six times as much taxes as the average guy. That's fine with him.

Fair, simple and he paid 6 times as much. But our system is gamed by the liberals. The rich guys rate is the same as the average - that's not fair. So they raise the tax on the rich and give him a loop hole (need their money for re-elections). Now the rich guy just takes someone to lunch, says it was business and writes the whole lunch off. Pays nothing. Conservatives want things like the flat tax with no deductions, etc.

You guys are being played and don't even know it.

    Spanky,

This is the latest right wing mantra "The Government can"t create jobs" and it is both untrue and never with any historical justification. Did you somehow miss The Louisiana Purchase, Railways, Oklahoma Land Rush, Free Range and cattle, Free Land in almost all states, Oil and Mineral Leases, TVA, Hoover dam project, US transport system, airports, Manhatten Project, Hundreds of resevoirs, lakes and canal systems, The race to the moon through off millions of jobs because it led to technology including computerization and communication, those government communication satellites that these signals bounce off since the days of telstar. These and hundreds of other government investments have led to millions of jobs since the beginning of the Republic. All you need to do is look at the tax brackets when the middle class expands and the economy booms the top tax brackets are high and government revenues are high. Low top brackets are a disincentive to creating long term industrial growth and an incentive to invest in high risk high reward short term vehicles.

Course I know those tomes are in a different section and you get confused easy. Actually Old Gecko’s Alternate Reality makes more sense than his Political Reality. They do have one common trait though. Neither one of them bear any relationship to Real Peoples Reality

Listen I know you are old, and obviously out of touch, but being gay is not frowned upon like it was back in your day. I'd really appreciate it if you cut out the gay innuendo.

I remember from all the endless political ads last fall---they all campaign with pictures of their family, feature their families in TV ads, etc. That says to me---vote for me, I have a family I care about and am a good person. Well--he obviously does not take his marriage vows seriously, so those ads weren't true.

I would say the same thing about a Democratic politician---don't use your family as campaign props.

New Speaker of the House, John Boehner, not only smokes and cries, he also has sex. And he does it with two women other than his wife. At least that's the rumor that's spreading like wildfire among Washington insiders and political bloggers who claim that a soon to be released New York Times probe into the politician's private life will reveal at least two extra-marital affairs.

This story broke last night at 11 pm ..i watched it on the news

dontgivemethepenguin, Well for starters he and his family were raked over the coals, drug through the mud and then he was impeached by the House of Representatives and put on trail by the Senate. Oh and let's not forget he apologized to the nation on live TV (not through a letter read by an aide on the house floor) now if that was humiliating. Yeah I think he was at least able to man up and take his lumps instead of ducking out the backdoor.

I am wondering why we feel the need to totally ruin someone's political career because they like sex, women, men (?), smoking or drinking? We have become a society of whiners and complainers when the need suits us... We are marching on the mall, in DC, because we want DADT repealed, never-minding that there are a lot of people that think homosexuality is an abomination and unethical.. We just tell those people that they are bigoted homophobes. Yet, because another human being likes sex (with the opposite sex) we will run them down and keep running over them until they are dead. We can not have it both ways..If we are going to fight for the rights of the minority we need to make sure that those rights are a big enough blanket to cover everyone's rights. If the sex is consensual, I see no need to keep stomping this person into the ground.. One other thing, we would probably not hear a word out of any of you bashers if the politician was gay, married to their partner and having affairs with multiple other gay persons... We all need to get off our high horses and think about our own lives from cradle to present day..

Bo - was clinton impeached for getting a bj from Monica?

No. He was impeached and disbarred for perjury. The fact that he got blown was not the offense (although, come on Lewinsky?) it was lying about getting blown.

                              Now Spanky,

Put yourself in Billy's shoes. If you got caught for getting a little on the side, although Lewinsky was not small, would you come out and confess it the first time. Heck NO! You'd be like every other man who cheated on his wife and deny it. But under oath, would you still lie? I think that under Oath, Bill told the truth, that is why the impeachment was little more than a show.

And besides would you tell Hillary you cheated on her--heck NO--she'd beat the crap out of him:)

The true offense - other than the lying part was letting "that woman" put her mouth on the Presidential junk.

Having deposed well over 1000 people the whole defintion of "what is, is" is absolutely insane and clearly was a lie. If fact for a few years I used that statement in the adminitions before many depositions, particulary of salesmen, con-men and others who thought they were smarter than the record.

I don't think it rises to the level of Clinton, Spitzer, Edwards, Sanford, Ensign, Vitter or others from both sides of the aisle.

Yeah, If Boehner thinks this is the right thing to do for a married guy who merely sent a pretty cheezy cheesecake picture to a woman, why hasn't he been more vociferous about his married peers who've actually done the horizontal mambo with prostitutes, other married women, etc.

Boehners problem is he has now set the "standard" for what acts should result in "immediate resignation".....I don't think this will make members on either side of the aisle happy!

It's laughable also to hear Boehner talk about "zero tolerance policy" for ethical problems and that "members of Congress should be held to the highest ethical standard". This from the guy who holds political ethics so sacred that he actually passed out checks from Big Tobacco lobbyists to members of the House while on the floor of the House, while the House was in session!!!

I don't think sending a picture and lying was that big of a deal, he might never have followed through. People lie and cheat online all the time, as evidenced by some of the posts we see. But he gets extra points for stupidly using an account that could be traced back to him. BTW I don't condone his actions either.

It's funny, you all can talk about the social habits of the GOP--and they do talk about social values like fools--but I don't see the same comments from the real crooks--those that cheat on the taxes, forget the own homes, or park their yachts to avoid taxes. Why don't you all want to get rid of them? Seems Boehner is at least getting those kinds to resign, not so much when Pelosi was speaker.

But as I have said before on here. What is good for the goose, isn't good for the gander. Gotta love the double standards on here:)

In his resignation letter Lee mentions mistakes in the plural, why is that? Is Boehner hoping more will not be revealed? Seems obvious enough to me.
