Jody I grew up in the south and the only signs I saw was the sitting on the back of the bus, different neighborhoods and one sign out side Copper Hill Tennessee. So yes, if you were in back woods south there may have been signs like you describe, but in Atlanta in was not so overt. I never saw a sign that said whites only. I did see signs that said no minors and I did ask why are miner's prohibited. So as a child I was shielded from all of those signs. Some things were not spoken in front of children.

I think that as long as people see today's issues as black against white then we have been divided and have been conquered.

Salt Grass. I was in Arkansas. I saw the signs on drinking fountains, they were clearly marked. I remember it so well because I started to get a drink from the "Colored" one--the relatives we were visiting stopped me. I asked what difference it made, water was water. Their response was that the colored people would object. Sure, they would. I was old enough to know what they really meant. Iowa had been desegregated since the late 1860's.

Salt Grass, what time frame are you talking about in Atlanta? My husband grew up there in the late 40's and 50's and he vividly remembers seeing those signs.....in Sears, in the theatres, in train stations and buses. If the family housekeeper took him to a movie, they had to sit in the balcony as blacks were not allowed to sit in the orchestra seats. Yes, segregation was alive and well during those times. Eventually the signs disappeared, but the mindset didn't right away, as time has passed, Atlanta has grown up and for the better. It is now one of my favorite cities.

Jody, you are right, you would most certainly have seen those signs in Arkansas, we only have to remember Governor Faubus, and his opposition to desegration 1957 at Little Rock HS there were signs there then and for a long time afterwards. Those were ugly times, we have come a ways, but I dont think Haley Barbour has completed that journey.

Jody, you have the right attitude, some people are just not worth bothering with. Those who know you here, know your character and your worth. Small minded people tend to try and bring down everyone they cant' get the better off, usually resorting to shouting and insults, a clear sign they have lost the argument.

I am not saying that Jody was wrong, I am just trying to point out everyone has a different view of back then. I did not see the 40's and lived in the country in the 50's and was not exposed to much of anything except a dirt road. My experience happen in the 60's and I realized changed did not come over night. as I stated many things were not said and it was not overt. Atlanta did have Ax handle Maddox in my time, but we avoided the violence that marked many cities back then. My parents taught me to respect people and I belived the words in the song "Jesus loves the Little Children".
