Week Ahead: Obama tries to solve Big 10 problem

The week ahead in politics: President Obama heads to Penn State, how do protests in Egypt affect the U.S., Republicans heads to early presidential states, plus we dig out.

Special thanks to Ali Weinberg for her handy camera work.

Can’t believe it’s the end of the week already (hey, not like I’m complaining or anything)! lol

I’m sure I’ll be deep in the throes of Football withdrawal by Sunday night! ;o)

Guess that means it’s time to thank our fabulous hosts/moderators Mark – Domenico & Ali who tolerate us week after week!

It’s a tough job, but - that’s why they pay you the ‘BIG’ bucks right? lol Plus you’ve got the best seats in the house!

Seriously, your hard work and dedication is what keeps FR the best blog on the web for political discourse!

Alright, who’s ready to head over to the Dew Drop Inn? I’m in the mood for some Johnny Cash & a nice cold Lemon Drop (stirred not shaken) of course!

Indy Redneck: Can you make sure the fireplace is well stoked? And could you talk to management about the possibility of opening a nice warm Bed & Breakfast next store?

Given the wicked weather most of us are enduring – a nice down comforter on a feather bed, some fresh croissants with raspberry jam & some piping hot fresh coffee would certainly hit the spot after a night of festivities!

Besides… Buzz is getting tired of sleeping in the boiler room & he hates waking up with popcorn remnants stuck to his cheek!

PS: No hard feelings Mark on your call that the Packers would win! ;o) Is it too early to start predicting the final score for the Super Bowl?

Oh Happy Days Rick!

Thanks for the reminder! I still forget that the Pro Bowl is before the Super Bowl now a days!

I don't care for that schedule - since players who were selected that are going to the Super Bowl have to pass it up!

I echo your sentiments... GOOO STEELERS!

Red

Come on Dooown. Fires all stoked. Drive –by’s got the joint jumping and things are all right with the world at least this little part of it.

Speaking of Bed and Breakfast got a big Victorian right down the road a piece that I’ve been keeping an eye on. Sits on a Hill with a Wrap-a –Round porch, Fireplace in every room, Chandelier or two to swing off of if your so inclined and a view all the way across West –by- God Virginia plumb to the Soggy Bottom of Kentucky, across to Nashville Tenn.,way on up to Steeler land. Shucks with your good Reading glasses on you might even catch a glimpse of the lights of Chicago (or maybe Vegas)

You got to help me come up with a name for it though and we got to do better than the No-Tell Motel. That sounds so Palinesque.

Give Newday a call and get her to send the Sleigh after you (nothing beats a sleigh ride, a S.O., a warm blanket and a discrete driver for romance) and I’ll warm up the Popcorn Machine for you and get the Barkeep working on that Lemon Drop.

The lemon drop is purfect!

So happy to hear about the lovely piece of property - it sounds just like what we need! Nothing in the world like being able to sit on the wrap around when the weather breaks with a hot cup of coffee and being able to watch the sun rise!

I'll toss around some ideas about a name - but I do agree about the No Tell Motel - if I'm not mistaken that's where Todd's been hanging out these days according to the National Enquirer! lol

Very interesting...

Not only is Comcast dropping the NBC Peacock logo and replacing it with a 'logo' that resembles something a 1st grader could have concocted:

Not to mention - I'm pissed because the peacock was around LONG before I was!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/27/nbc-universals-new-logo-d_n_815212.html

And then there's this:

MSNBC has shelved Ed Schultz' "Psycho Talk" segment, Schultz announced on his radio show Thursday.

The segment, a sort of cousin to Keith Olbermann's "Worst Persons In The World," features Schultz highlighting a statement or action he dubs "psycho talk" every night on his show. But a listener emailed in to Schult'z show and said that the segment seemed to have disappeared since Schultz' switch to 10 P.M. from his previous 6 P.M. slot. (Schultz' move was part of MSNBC's reshuffle in the wake of Olbermann's departure from the network.)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/28/ed-schultz-psycho-talk-axed-msnbc_n_815317.html

Can't tell you how pleased I am to see censorship alive & kicking in 2011! *insert snark*

In the meantime, the right wing hate merchants are doubling down and thriving across the street!

Wait for it folks - the Fourth Estate is NOW complete!

Everyone has flipped on/past FR's weekly version of the "Walton's", all the goodnight John Boys/have a great weekend newdays... see you at the Dew Drop....Johnny Cash on the juke box..a world of good friends/no nay sayers....fresh croissants with raspberry jam, down comforters on feather beds......

Seems like I heard all this before.... no - not last Friday at the normal time/schedule.....

seems like it Tuesday night... about 9:00 PM Eastern. Obama's State of the Dew Drop Inn speech?

"We do things big!" Yeah! (biggest defits in history) We cannot keep spending, but hey, lets call it "investing"! Yeah! Then we can have shiny new trains. Besides we're getting new magic shingles that will save the world! Yeah! (Hope Cash's Burning Ring of Fire doesn't come up next on the Juke Box)

We cannot keep spending like this....so lets freeze spending and hold hands! Yeah! (Didn't Thelma and Louise freeze the speedometer at about 90 and hold hands....)

Two wars, (one we just just tripled down on, are now losing 6 times as many as before and has been going on for 10 years), Iran (thank God the Israeli geeks gave their computers the Mother of All Worms), and a bunch of other stuff, but HEY - HOW ABOUT DADT! Yeah! And how about our service men and women! Standing Yeah! Now if we can just get those pesky liberal elite schools to let ROTC back on the campus because we have DADT - there will be no more national security problems! Yeah!

Foreign Policy? Tunisia ! Yeah (Huh?) Sudan! Yeah! (WTF?) (Egypt burning? I'll give that guy that looks like Count Chocula a call in a few days.)

Anyway, it does seem he read a book on Reagan and learned something. How to govern, fiscal policy, foreign policy...nah. He learned that Americans believe in American exceptionalism and seems to think it works well in speeches to Americans. Obama thinks that even if you don't think there is anything exceptional about American excepionalism, even you are really still the same guy that as a Senator was graded left of Bernie Sanders (an admitted socialist), just stick something like Reagan would have said into your speech.......

like "America not being a place on the map, but a light to the world"........

almost sounds like a ....Victoria house high on the hill with a wrap around porch with down comforters and feather beds.....

Liberals and LaLa Land. (BTW - No Tell is pretty good, especially when you refuse to deal with reality.)

Feisty,

About your Beck and (Limbaugh) call for denouncement or whatever from yesterday.

First, (actually a side note) why is that you guys railing about the morons that watch Beck seem to be the only evidence here at FR, of morons watching Beck?

Second, this country was built by politicians, some of who would actually get P.O.ed enough to go out in the woods, get the ole cap and ball pistols out, stand back to back, walk 10, turn and play dodge bullet. We've somehow survived all these years without liberal, wet pants nannism and will get through this despite Obama's/left's civility hypocrisy and coming "let no tragedy go to waste" gun control efforts.

Third, They are political entertainers. Watch'em if you want - who cares? Speaking of cartoons, you realize that Mighty Mouse isn't a real mouse, he can't stick his finger in the barrel of a pistol and when the cat pulls the trigger - the barrel blows up and the cat just gets black smudges on his face - you know that's not real, right... and real mice (even the really crazy mices that talk to skulls) are not incited to grab cats by the tails and swing them round and round and round....

Fourth, no offense intended, just a statement of fact, but your behavior and posts that weekend were the most contemptible I have ever seen, all time low point at FR. For you to claim a moral high ground, to call for a denouncement is beyond ludicrous and absurd. No hard feelings, you just have no relevancy...especially on moral matters.

And last, I never held you or anyone else accountable for the crap Comrade Kieth Good Riddance spewed. I don't watch Beck, (although I gather from you guys that it sounds like he knows what he is talking about), I speak for myself not Beck and don't have to go determine where you or thinkformeprogressive took something he said and twisted it the way you wanted, or simplyjust inserted the histrionics and hyperbole. (I did click on the little Jewish group you mentioned - Simon Greer, a union organizer, community organizer, crusader for "social change"... too funny) Anyway - be a tool if you want.

About Limbaugh, same thing, although in the past I have listened to him in the car at times. I recall all the soiled pants about his statement on hoping Obama failed. Same thing with that - you guys twisted it in an effort to marginalize the right. Limbaugh was just hoping Obama failed at getting his agenda through. Obama didn't fail his agenda and look where we are now.

Funny, but it is very evident -judging from the last election, that the majority of America agreed with Rush and certainly wanted to insure Obama fails with the rest of his agenda.

No apologies there either.

Bob,

When you have people who act like children, who are distracted by every shiny thing, you need a nanny. It's unfortunate. I'll give you some examples. First the one where Republicans make all their promises, like cutting spending, or solutions to repeal and replace, but after they are elected, those things just don't seem to happen.

Instead the Republicans offer their supporters shiny distractions, like reading the constitution, or voting to repeal health care in the House knowing full well it will go no where from there, praising another judge who rules that a mandate to buy health care is unconstitutional. But alas, it is just tokenism, gimmicks, shiny things...But hey, the children are overjoyed with their little toys.

And the poor, gullible, naive children are ready to run out and vote for Republicans again!

As always, thanks to Mark, Domenico and Ali for their efforts.

Huckabee is headed to Iowa for his book tour. Pawlenty coming with another book, I heard that he made a statement that he wants to "repeal" the repeal of DADT, that way the US Gov can spend another $55,000 (we don't have) for each expulsion from the military for no good reason. Newt was in Des Moines this week. Wish there was something we could do to slow the stampeding herd of elephants invading us.

Time to head to the Dew Drop for a little party. Have a nice weekend everyone.

Well, what a week it has been! What oh what have we learned this week? Locally, hospitals and insurers are getting together to trim medical inflation, according to an article in the Fargo Forum. They want to get ahead of national health reforms, which means that as we have said all along, this is change you can believe in. Nationally, Bachmann, who, unfortunately for the Republican Party is NEVER at a loss for words, showed yet again the fissure in the Party as they seek to make an argument for re election. Palin, who never saw a camera that she didn't want to stand in front of, decided to use a childish metaphor for the SOTU, and her choice was a constant refrain of WTF, as in WTF, why does this woman think she is Presidential material? In world news, Mubarek has his hands full, and it will be fascinating to see what happens next. Which brings me around to thanking my hosts, especially for the response to my questions. LOVE to hear your take on the issues of the day. IR: the paints are hitched, and I do believe if you listen, you will hear the harness bells as we come through the trees! Feisty, I will be more than ready for a drink, after that trip through the woods will be feeling hot brandyish. Will see you at the Dew Drop Inn!

Well said, newdayDawning. When I went for my own annual, I see the law being implemented and embraced by the medical field. Even though Iowa elected a GOP governor who is joining the law suit (but the newly elected Atty General isn't), the state is implementing the regulations anyway. They know this is likely a futile effort as more and more people like it.

Ditto heads comes to minds with those two TPers. I've been thinking about the TP and the GOP--I really do not see this working out as a positive for republicans.

President Obama is speaking about Egypt on MSNBC, gotta go.

So Jody, just how many of the states are now actively suing to overturn Obamacare? Have you calculated the net increase in costs to the states imposed through Obamacare? And what do you believe will happen to those costs? How will the states deal with the increases?

And just for fun (cause I know you won't respond) how are we to reconcile your statement "I really do not see this working out as a positive for repulicans" with the results of the November election? Is it your assertion that the Tea Party did not have a positive effect on the republican gains? Were the republicans better off with the Pelosi lead House?

I look forward to your response.

      From HeartLand.org:

"Our research suggests the Virginia case against the individual mandate, if successful, will probably not result in the entire law being declared unconstitutional."

      http://www.heartland.org/healthpolicy-news.org/article/28312/Research_Commentary_Severability_and_Obamacare.html

      New RNC Chairman, Reince Priebus

      – His law firm says the recently passed health care bill is "constitutional": Rebus's law firm not only says the law is constitutional, but has touted its benefits to clients.

So I guess we now know one law firm's opinion. You may not beleive me, but good golly Anna Molly will tell you lawyers are wrong all the time. In fact,it not even about right or wrong, mostly about the amount of the retainer and the billable hour.

But, and without reading your citation, you got to love the hedging - "probably" will not result. See I gotta disagree - if there isn't aseverability clause, and there isn't then it's going down. It's intwind in the bill. Plus, absent a mandate the budget busting aspects are inescapable, no?

The judge in the VA case said two things in his decision:

1-that the law is allowed to stand until a higher court can rule – Why, when he could let his ruling stand and let the Government appeal?

2-that the remaining part of the law should stand on its own even if the higher court agrees with his decision – so much for the need of a severability clause.

So Dennis do you believe that the Supreme Court cannot overturn the lower court? Or perhaps you believe the Supreme Court is bound by another court's decision?

How many severability clauses have you 1. drafted; and 2. litigated? And bonus question: how many cases have you won at the trial court level then lost on appeal?

      Come on now.

Sure, it has been a fine week.

The CBO pronounced the deficit dangerous, and warned of the upcoming catastrophe if not controlled. (Obama called for more spending).

The price of oil is skyrocketing, as are the prices for home heating oil and food. ( Obama called for solar shingles. I guess I put one on my car, and drive- but only in daylight hours).

Tunisia, ( our ally) fell. Obama said that was nice. Egypt is in flames - Obama will not, ( according to Gibbs), even pick up the phone to speak with him. Yemen is falling to an Islamist insurrection. There are riots in Jordan.

Obama is worried about the big ten.

        Shades of Jimmy Carter.

Brings me to the SOTU. So, the theory is, because he gave his plagiarized and recycled speech with a smile, all is good. After all, wasn't Reagan elected because Carter was dour?

No. Let me rephrase that: absolutely NOT.

Reagan unseated Carter because he had a plan to fix the economy and foreign affairs. Carter was not reelected because, quite frankly, we determined that he was absolutely clueless on how to fix any problem- including the ones of his own making.

I have seen this movie before. We did not get Clinton, folks. We go Carter. He is even worse as a retread.

The CBO pronounced the deficit dangerous, and warned of the upcoming catastrophe if not controlled. (Obama called for more spending).”

Many Conservatives have forgotten the 1937 recession which was caused by Congress cutting spending in an attempt to balance the budget after the “New Deal” and the Federal Reserve’s “tight money” policies.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_recessions_in_the_United_States

Today we face a debt that is near 100% of GDP but everyone forgets that in 1947 our debt was at 125% of GDP.

And just what did Reagan do in the 80’s to end the smaller recession? He called for huge spending programs and kept spending high for 6 years.

Conservatives, at this minute, are also ignoring what has happened in the UK with a drop in GDP after invoking their reduced spending programs.

        http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2011/01/27/uk-shrink-gop/

Sure at this point we can reduce government spending but we should not cut it excessively as some would suggest. Cutting can be done after job recovery is stronger.

Egypt is in flames - Obama will not, ( according to Gibbs), even pick up the phone to speak with him.”

And yet 2 hours before you posted this the President talked with him for 30 minutes and gave a briefing with reporters.

Feisty: No jo and company illustrate exactly the problem that the Republican party will have. They desperately want this President and the country to fail. These are some very sad people, and they live to say "I told you so". Without that failure, they may have to admit that, doggone it, the President is as we have always said, a centrist. But, that is why we meet at the Dew Drop Inn. No "naysayers" or hate allowed. These folks will never get past the bouncers, and their jealousy undermines what little sense they have. Same old, tired, petty, lame, wishful thinking from a jealous Jersey who wants so much for President Obama to be Carter that it is a constant tune sung--poor Jersey Shores. That's the most ridiculous of the often ridiculous comparisons made and Jersey knows it.

Solar shingles on a home would likely mean more gas for vehicles for much longer, less carbon emissions and cleaner air. Such irrational and backward thinking as Jersey expresses is why this country is being outpaced by foreign powers. Conservatives are the reason why the rest of the world is years ahead of America in clean, renewable energy--conservatives think it isn't worth the effort and continue being stuck in the 20th century.

Feisty never was, never anything of substance, or relevance, hence the chihuahua. Just a cute little mascot for the Paris's, a little worthless gimmick that never had any contribution, except being cute for the friends. None of her arguments ever had any bite, she could never hurt you, just little harmless nips if you turned your back.

And then you have people that just try to be nice, they just try to mind their business and after putting up with it a while, decide to just it leave it alone, stay away. These are the people the nasty little purse crapper hops out of the bag for and goes after.

Read the third line of Feisty's post to no joe.

Feisty a nasty, ill tempered little purse crapping chihuahua?.....her posts maybe a whiff of a cheap Doonie bag of crap?....

I don't know. After a while, she destroys any faith you may have about her, about what kind of a person she is, you don't care and quit giving any benefit of doubt.

There is no value to the above, and there is nothing entertaining about it either.

BTW - Enjoy your other comments, Edward. Sorry for the above.

        Dennis,

        Good post.

But, do keep in mind there were other reasons plus a completely different set of factors. Nevertheles, the primary point is that federal spending has to be carefully targeted and timed. These current guys have no clue as to these two points (if they are actually trying to create the right jobs and not just extend their social agenda).

It seems like during the period you mentioned (just before the 1937 recession actually) that government managed to increase jobs in the steel industry by 5,000 or so. Problem was that another 26,000 Americans who worked in industries that used steel - lost their jobs.

How many fossil fuel related jobs are being wantoningly destroyed by Obama to create a few green jobs, that aren't currently economically sustainable?

        Anyway, enjoyed your comments.

Oh yea, Obama did end up calling Count Chocula, guess no joe went to the bathroom or something for a minute. Did Obama have anything to say? Did you get a hint about what our foreign policy is (I must have gone to the bathroom and not remembered it during the SOTU speech and missed it). I know it is peace and puppies for everyone, but was there anything new?

Sorry for the sarcasism, not directed at you.

        WOW! Just WOW!

I gotta tell you - I'm impressed, not ONE but TWO dissertations out of Bobby this afternoon expounding on the 'evil' Feisty Redhead!

I cannot tell you how pleased I am that you find me a big enough 'threat' to waste hours on a Saturday afternoon obsessing over me!

Now some people would tell you that you need to get a life there Bobby - but NOT me...

I say keep doing what you're doing, from all appearances it brings you some much needed comfort! ;o)

I'm also grateful that you hitched your wagon to the one trick pony NJNB - given her lack of credibilty, she needs all the morally bankrupt 'fans' she can get!

And if your past 'performaces' are any indication, you'll fit in rather nicely! ;o)

Nojo (aka - Troll #1): Where's your proof that the SOTU was plagiarized? Seriously, if you're going to accuse anyone of copying/lifting anything, especially a major speech to the nation, then you had better have rock-solid proof of that.

I highly doubt you have any proof, but then again when have you ever backed up a single pithy remark with any evidence?

Solar shingles on a home would likely mean more gas for vehicles for much longer, less carbon emissions and cleaner air. Such irrational and backward thinking as Jersey expresses is why this country is being outpaced by foreign powers

So do you think manufacturing will happen via the shingle fairy? It will take a decent amount of resources to produce those things, meaning a front loading of fossil fuels.

We're being outpaced by foreign powers for the most part because we are tying up our resources playing world cop. And for what it's worth, the republicans (with the democrats help) got us into it, but the current administration isn't doing much to get us out of it.

        Nice try. No sale.

You think no one else will read the article?

Thatcher was the one who made the statement that America was the only nation founded on an idea. Obama stole that, and used it without attribution.

FDR lamented the fact that the departments of interior and commerce had authority over bears, depending on whether they were on federal lands, or not- and stated that it got complicated when there were cubs born of an intermarriage.

He stole from Wilson. He stole from JFK.

Try though you may to diminish it, the man is a plagiarist.

You do not like it? Good. Neither do I.

You will find out exactly why so many of us hold no jo in such disregard. And while I am on the subject: NOW HEAR THIS: Any of you going into politics are not allowed to use the metaphor "LIGHT TO THE WORLD" with regard to America unless you credit Wilson. Apparently, according to NJ, Wilson holds the copyright to those words. Oh, lest I forget, you can't say "family" either, that I guess is owned by Cuomo. In fact, it would just be easier, if before you gave a speech, you would contact our resident scold no jo for permission to use any words at all, K?

Since it is very cold here today, and I have some spare time, I went in search of good old Alvin Felzenberg, who wrote the article that silly no jo bandies about with such pride. The man is a Republican, with sympathies for the "teabaggers" and who thinks that Joe Lieberman, a petty and vindictive man is a "profile in courage". I hardly think that his jaundiced views are tantamount to a man giving a neutral review. In fact, I rather think that he is as incapable of neutral review as is our curmudgeon no jo.

        Nice work NDD!

        Let's recap shall we?

Tunisia, ( our ally) fell. Obama said that was nice. Egypt is in flames - Obama will not, ( according to Gibbs), even pick up the phone to speak with him. Yemen is falling to an Islamist insurrection. There are riots in Jordan.

And yet 2 hours before you posted this the President talked with him for 30 minutes and gave a briefing with reporters.

Brings me to the SOTU. So, the theory is, because he gave his plagiarized and recycled speech with a smile, all is good. After all, wasn't Reagan elected because Carter was dour?

Andrew Malcolm of the Los Angeles Times was one of the several others that wrote an article on the same thing. He pointed out how Obama cited RFK as saying "The future is not a gift. It is an achievement." ...but, failed to cite others as if in effect suggesting the rest was original.

"We are the first nation to be founded for the sake of an idea." Kinda sounds a little like "The United States is the first nation to have been founded on an idea." The first was an Obama quote from the SOTU, the second was from Margaret Thatcher, British PM on national TV.

Obama said that he wanted the nation he leads to be a "light to the world." EXACT same words as Woodrow Wilson.

"I know there isn't a person here who trade places with any other nation on Earth." Kinda a hacked version of ...."I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation."? Obama on the first, JFK the second.

Not the first time Obama has been accused of this stuff either. Seems Hillary Clinton's team was complaining about passages/etc. from 2008 Obama speeches and debates as sounding very much like Deval Patricks campaign stuff from 2006. Obama's response - he and Patrick "trade ideas all the time."

My favorite is MLK's "audaciousness of faith". Wonder where audacity of hope came from?

Anyway, anyone with a functioning brain stem (there's your excuse Feisty and newday) can figure this stuff out. Doesn't really matter, anyone with an intellectual capacity beyond the ability to fog a mirror doesn't believe what this guy says anyway. Nevertheless, thanks to no joe for pointing out.

dennis of columbus - let us not forget the tariffs added on imports that deepened the 1930's depression and that it was only by going to a war economy that got us out of the depression. I understand from my parents that there was quite a bit of rationing, scrap metal drives and war bond sales as well

As for 1947 we were the only hope for rebuilding Europe, North Africa and the far east. We had undamaged manufacturing capacity that no on else had except perhaps russia and we, as a people, believed that it was right to rebuild the manufacturing capabilities in those areas. Let me remind you that our income tax rates after the war and going into the 60's were also considerably higher than todays. In short we could produce and sell world wide what everyone else needed. Comparing 1947 to today is apples to turnips, totally different world except that people gave birth, raised families and died.

Reagan in the eighties, lets see there was a serious case of inflation, then stagflation and a race against russia for for weapons superiority. While the weapons race starting in the 50's had some adverse consequences, it also gave us the foundations of our current technologies and expanded social programs thru the 80's and 90's.. But I digress beyond reagan and the 80's. You may say that reagan spent our way out of stagflation and the recession of the early 80's. But again the economic conditions in the late 70's going into the 80's were completely different than conditions today. Today is one of a global economy with many emerging markets.

The current sovergn debt problems of europe are a prime example of what excess spending and ignoring fiscal responsibility will do to a nations economy. There is currently an annual economic summit occuring in Davos, switzerland this week.. I have heard of no economist, government or financial analyst saying or recommending that the way out of europes crises is by spending more. Many of those also are concerned with America not doing enough to control its deficits.

I have no problem in seeing America raise income taxes across the board, but I do have a problem with America not being able to control spending. It seems that the American politician always thinks ahead for only two things. First what do I need to say to insure I will be re-elected. Secondly, how can I spend $$$ before I even have the dollars to spend.

We currently have a fragile economy growing slowly and capable of being derailed by either uncontrolled federal deficits, state and munincipal debt, european debt issues, housing concerns and our own global trade concerns.

The proposed spending cuts by the republicans have been stated on BloombergTV to take 55 years to balance our budget. Folowing obamas cuts would we hope to see a balanced budget in 100 years? 150 years?

Yes, I listened to obamas briefing and I was ashamed to see his attempt at chastising mubarack for egypts violence against the protestors and saying that the egyptian people had the universal right to protest and destroy property but the egyptian government did not have the right to try and controll the violence of the crowds. Obama all but told our ally to let the protesters carry on at will and that there would be consequences from us if mubarack didn't. Such a fine example of American diplomacy. America has its American citizens rights guarenteed by OUR constitution, our rights, our attitudes and our thoughts should not be forced on another nations attempts at controlling a bad situation.

I also have no doubt that our present administration had little to no clue on how to respond to Egypts problems. Our responce should have been to ask Egypt if there was anything that we could do to help defuse the situation rather than to jump in wagging the finger.

President Obama did not say or imply "universal right to protest and destroy property". What he said was exactly the same rights you and I have – The right for peaceful protest. John McCain said the same thing as President Obama today.

          American,

Thanks for waiting for my reply.

By the spring of 1937, production, profits, and wages had regained their 1929 levels. Unemployment remained high, but it was considerably lower than the 25% rate seen in 1933. In June 1937, some of Roosevelt's advisors urged spending cuts to balance the budget. WPA (Works Progress Administration) rolls were drastically cut and PWA (Work Projects Administration) projects were slowed to a standstill. The American economy took a sharp downturn in mid-1937, lasting for 13 months through most of 1938. Industrial production declined almost 30 per cent and production of durable goods fell even faster.

While there is a link to the Great Depression and Tariffs including the fact that the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 caused the Depression to deepen as imports and exports both went into a tailspin. But there is little connection between Tariffs and the 1937 to 1938 recession. If you have some materials that show tariffs to be a larger factor please provide them so I can read and evaluate them.

While comparing 1947 to today is like comparing apples to turnips it is of value in understanding what worked and why, what didn’t and why not and what is / is not similar today. This applies to any point in history. Now what I was talking about was how much debt we were in compared to today. Rebuilding overseas had little to do with the national debt (that came from the Depression and WWII) but much to do with rebuilding our economy and a way to begin to pay off our debt. Yes the income taxes were high at that time and were only sustainable because of our rapidly expanding economy. Again that had little to do with the level of debt but how it would be paid down. But it does indicate that high taxes do not necessarily hamper growth.

In the 80’s it was much easier for recover to take hold as our manufacturing industry and export base was 3 times what they are today, as a percent of GDP. Yet between tax cuts and spending Reagan spent more than three trillion dollars in 6 years. In 2010 dollars that would be about $10 trillion. Another factor is that in the 80’s there was a shortage of labor helping to bring unemployment down faster where today we have an excess of labor. This excess, worldwide, is due in large to the global economy and will continue for years, maybe decades.

          http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3b/USDebt.png

My focus was on the UK who saw a frightening downturn in their GDP for the 4th quarter. The primary blame is on the sharp budget and spending cuts made last year. You may point to other factors as the cause but it looks a lot like 1937 in the US when reduced spending caused a recession as we were almost recovered from the Great Depression.

What I propose is some reduction in spending that will allow our economy to strengthen while lawmakers evaluate how to best organize the government and set priorities that will allow us to have a vibrant economy in the future. Make changes slowly, like a doctor, watch the patient (economy) and adjust as needed but not too quickly.

I have heard of no economist, government or financial analyst saying or recommending that the way out of europes crises is by spending more. Many of those also are concerned with America not doing enough to control its deficits. Accurate statement and they are quite concerned with the lagging UK recovery and the potential of a double-dip recession. They are not calling for an immediate balanced budget. They are saying that the US should begin to deal with its budget deficit. And the President called for spending cuts. As for those investments none of them called for immediate spending but more of a long-term strategy and a method to pay for them.

Dennis - point taken on on spending in 1937, however the general government consensus (hoover I believe) after the crash of 1929 and into the early 30's was for minimal government involvement, smoot-hawley was still in effect at this time (1937) and was later startingto be minimized by the bretton woods agreement of 1944. My point was that there are other factors involved than just spending. BTW - you brought us up to the end of 1938 but didn't mention if more government spending took place in the projects you mentioned to correct the economy by the end of 1938?

With regards to 1947 the effects of the war had everything to do with our economy for years after 1945, we had the manufacturing capacity to create and export what the world needed to rebuild at a faster rate than if we simply ignored our allies and enemies at will and returned to our attitudes of the 30's.

No problem with the 80's analysis or with the high $$$ spent on military development that was a continuing one upmanship with Russia promoted by both parties during the cold war and ending in the late 80's.

With regards to the UK or even Greece and other european EU countries, years of spending has taken its toll when revenues to sustain such spending has failed to materialize to support it. The european union made the right decision in requiring countries to develop plans that would put them back onto sound financial footing. Yes, one could argue that the EU could print more money to maintain everyones social benefits and to carry on bad economic policies, but to me that is merely kicking the can down the road.

The thinkprogressive article you referenced only showed that spending cuts does affect GDP just as our 4th qtr gdp in 2009 reflected around 5 % growth due to the 2009 stimulasbut which promptly dropped back down to around 2% for the first 3 qrters of 2010. I didn't see anything in the article commenting on why the EU's plan to restore a sovereign nations fiscal well being was necessary or on how continuing spending that creates larger deficits was a good thing.

I agree that to try and balance a budget over the short term is impractical without a healthy dose of increased revenue as well. An increase of which will not avail itself until jobs return and exports grow.

However it has been reported on bloomberg TV that the republican plan is estimated to take 55 years to create a balanced budget, hardly a plan likely to greatly impact recovery. There is nothing wrong with a surgical approach to the economy as long as one realizes that limited surgery with a wait and see observation can bring about the demise of the patient as well.

My fear is that we are merely still kicking the proverbial can down the road until our society has to reboot thru anarchy or revolt.

I congratulate you on your level of discourse and arguments. I add to it the fact that you have shown knowledge in that not every financial crisis can be solved with the same actions or are caused in the same manner which is what I believe also.

Don't get your undies in a bundle about what the Dems have done, or are doing, or hypothetically will do (the hypotheticals are the most entertaining). What is your own Party doing? The Republicans made campaign promises to create jobs, balance the budget, reduce deficits--they answer to you. I don't vote for them.

You are correct. Bush's incompetence put the entire global economy in the tank. Obama has managed to stabilize things with no help from the party that got us here. Republicans may yet succeed in sending it all right back to where it was and maybe even into a full blown depression. There's still $45 trillion worth of Credit Default Swaps floating around out there, so we are far from out of the woods. Obama is trying to get us to use the parachute, but Republicans are saying we should jump out of the plane without it. The fall might not last as long, but the impact will be fatal.

            Exactly

Your response to Edward-1075991 is right on. it reminds me of when were in Egypt , after 9-11, the cab driver told my husband and me--"Please tell Mr. Buuushe don't start a war it will only embolden the Muslim extremist".

Bush's incompetence put the entire global economy in the tank.

Bush fell right into Bin Laden's trap with his greed and cowboy attitude.

Michael Scheuer, who served the CIA for 11 years reports the Pakistan Daily Times. “… He said [that] Al Qaeda” intends to “‘stir the troubled pot of oil-related international worries’ and thereby increase pessimism about the price of oil and the dependability of oil supplies.… Scheuer saidBin Laden’s intention is to bankrupt the US economy, and is ‘entirely likely’ to lead to attacks on infrastructure targets inside the US.”

            http://healthandenergy.com/osama_bin_laden.htm

Besides talking about President Obama strike the right balance what else are they talking about? The cost of oil and the Muslim Brotherhood.

President Obama has the anti-Obama propaganda machine of Rupert Murdoch, Dick Armey, the notorious polluters of the air waves and this planet, the Koch brothers, the professional right , and of course the mis-guided tea baggers. Don't forget he is the First "Black" President in a nation that always tries to portray our President other i.e. Kenyan born, clandestine Muslim terrorist, to the idiots on the religious Anti- Christ, etc, etc, etc.

Virginia Democratic Rep. Jim Moran said--"In this case a lot of people in this country, it's my belief, don't want to be governed by an African-American, particularly one who is inclusive, who is liberal, who wants to spend money on everyone and who wants to reach out to include everyone in our society. And that's a basic philosophical clash."

Well, Juven certainly does not have a broad range of topics to discuss. Also, Juven is not aware of any authentic grasp or description of marxist, communism and socialism

That is not ordinary. Should Juven decide to drop in at the Dew Drop Inn, perhaps we could provide him with some text books; providing,of course, he isn't too unhinged.
