A lot of Republicans consciously ignore the role Bush/Cheny played in bringing down the economy. Ari Fleishcher did just that this morning on Morning Joe.

He stated that the SOTU speech had too much in it that would increase the deficit and debt. He had to be reminded by Senator Sherrod Brown that contrary to popular GOP belief the debt and deficit issues did not begin on 01/21/2009 even though the GOP talking points always seem to imply that they want to take their country back from that "big spender" Barack Obama.

What a bunch of hypocrites! I give the President mad props for even wanting to be in the same room with these people who vilify him at every turn because he hasn't fixed their mess on the schedule they set!

That takes a lot of cajones!

Sheila: don't you find yourself wondering what Ryan and co. REALLY believe. It defies credulity that they keep re-hashing this stuff from the 80's. I am equally certain that the Irish govt. is wondering what they heck he was talking about with their economy. Be interesting to see if they respond. To put the Irish and the UK in the same sentence as Greece is pure and deliberate ignorance.

Doom and gloom? No way - $14 Trillion in debt, and $1 Trillion plus deficit means nothing but happiness and sunshine. And trains - don't forget about the shiny trains upon which we will all ride on our way to winning the future.

Last night President Obama came across as the Uniter, unlike the Decider from 2001-2009. Independents will takeaway from this speech, that the President is looking to move America forward, not backwards, as the GOP wants to do!

Sure NewDay, let's talk about culpability for the debt. Sure, Bush and Cheney were bad, but was it their budget? Did they have exclusive control over the spending? Did the congress agree with any of the spending from '00-'08? How about '06 and beyond, did Pelosi exercise any control?

Huff and puff and litigate culpability all you want. Problem is the cows have come home. We are all in a HUGE hole.

I liked that part of the speech! It's cool to think we could have high speed rail like the Europeans and the Chinese. I'm sure there were people who doubted our goal of getting to the moon, but we did.

Except 1. no one wants to ride trains, and 2. no one wants to pay for them. Not cost effective

Feisty: I keep wondering that myself. What IS she on. The only thing you have to know about Bachmann is that she was in the final graduating class of the law school at Oral Roberts U. That is why she has this rather "unique" view of the founding of this country AND the Constitution. Those folks create their own reality.

The UK especially laughs at the US for trying to put through a nationalized health care system modeled on theirs that has proven to be a disaster, as they try to go in the opposite direction with theirs.

It's easy to see that "these people" are all they have. Or else they'd give us something better. And more and more, they become the mainstream voices, probably because they ARE more and more the mainstream voices.

That's a great idea. How else does anyone plan to incent 100,000 people to become teachers in a system that makes them the constant target of demonization and ever-increasing budget cuts?

Good idea! Although, as a teacher myself, the benefits and salary are really not all that bad I don't think. It is the large class sizes, the lack of respect from parents, students and administration, the lack of time to accomplish all national standards while making them relevant (even if they are not) and the fact that the system is not set up for the realities of society today. Parent's treat school as a day care, and are apathetic to what is asked of them as well as the fact they allow their children to miss frequently, be more social than thoughtful and have the audacity to expect us to fix their myriad of social problems. I love many of the kids, which is what keeps me going, but how long will we sit and be told that it is our responsibility to teach when there is no support at home or in the community?

I wonder what China spends on its CSL program every year? You know, the Chinses as a second language program. Like our ESL program. I think only like half of the LA Unified students are in that program.

A male friend of mine once told me a story about waking up in the middle of the night to find a very drunk, attractive young woman standing by the side of his bed. Apparently, it was a neighbor who had entered the wrong apartment in her drunken state. Do you think he reported her to the police? Uh, no, he made her welcome and they ended up dating for six months. If India and China send their brightest students to our shores to complete their educations, why wouldn't we suggest they stay? Why look a gift horse in the mouth?

I am just ticked off because I have a Grandchild who will graduate with a Masters in teaching soon and our town just closed two schools and told any teacher with less than five years to be looking elsewhere. Why would any child put themselves through all the heartache and expense for nothing?President Obama is not living in the same world I live in.

Fact is our students perform worse than theirs. Should we lie to ours and tell them it'll be ok? Cause it won't be.

I am a proud Grandma but I will bet my Grandchild and raise you two. They are just as smart and where do you get the figures that China feeds us? They are not too honest in other areas so why would we believe their test scores?

Maggie, I understand what you are saying, but we need to be objective: not every child was raised like yours.

How many of them get passed in spite of their grades because to hold them back would hurt their self esteem?

How many of them play sports where scores are not kept, again, because keeping score hurts their self esteem?

They have iPods, gameboys, and computers, but very few of them have any real conviction of their own competence, because all that self esteem building has deprived them of the opportunity to achieve anything real.

I think that is what Spanky is taking about.

The fact that a million immigrants have gotten jobs in the last two years in this economy speaks to the same issues- American workers disdain jobs they find beneath them. Had they not, those same immigrants would not be employed, now, would they?

How many hours a day do your grandkids spens playing xbox, gameboy, ipod? Have you seen their textbooks? I took a look at my 15 year olds books in civics and social studies. It ain't pretty.

The x box,ipod and such are great tools for getting excellent grades. You do well or at least the best you are capable of or the cell disappears. You will be amazed at the grades going up. Your child will soon be driving age and that works better yet.

Gonna go with No Jo on this one. I remember when I was a kid, and you went home with poor grades (and I did, plenty of times). You didn't get to 'feel good about yourself' until you got it fixed. As a matter of fact, you didn't get to do a whole lot of stuff. If you wanted to play on the team, you had to be good enough to make it through an old form of democracy called 'choosing up sides'.

Debbie you are asking some questions that the "powers that be" would rather the general public did not have answers to, well the factual answers anyway, I wouldn't expect a reply.
