We're shooting another edition of Inside the Boiler Room today. Got a question for Mark and Domenico about the State of the Union, or what comes next? Post it below!
Seems like Paul Ryan's response was doom and gloom, certainly in opposition to what Reagan would have said. Fact checking Ryan: He tries to appear bi-partisan by saying both parties were responsible. He ignores the culpability of the Cheney/Bush administration for spending us into a ditch. The policies he talks about are more of the same. How much worse can American get if those policies are put back in place?
A lot of Republicans consciously ignore the role Bush/Cheny played in bringing down the economy. Ari Fleishcher did just that this morning on Morning Joe.
He stated that the SOTU speech had too much in it that would increase the deficit and debt. He had to be reminded by Senator Sherrod Brown that contrary to popular GOP belief the debt and deficit issues did not begin on 01/21/2009 even though the GOP talking points always seem to imply that they want to take their country back from that "big spender" Barack Obama.
What a bunch of hypocrites! I give the President mad props for even wanting to be in the same room with these people who vilify him at every turn because he hasn't fixed their mess on the schedule they set!
Sheila: don't you find yourself wondering what Ryan and co. REALLY believe. It defies credulity that they keep re-hashing this stuff from the 80's. I am equally certain that the Irish govt. is wondering what they heck he was talking about with their economy. Be interesting to see if they respond. To put the Irish and the UK in the same sentence as Greece is pure and deliberate ignorance.
Doom and gloom? No way - $14 Trillion in debt, and $1 Trillion plus deficit means nothing but happiness and sunshine. And trains - don't forget about the shiny trains upon which we will all ride on our way to winning the future.
And gosh NewDay, maybe not so much around here [MSNBC-land], but around other websites, you know the ones that focus on financial and economic issues, Ireland and Greece are frequenlty "lumped together. So too is the UK and it's debt ratio.
Or are you saying Ireland is economically sound? Maybe it will win the future?
Here's a question: Will the American electorate realize that the GOP mantra from last year"We Get It" be beleived?
So far, the House has Not sent anything resembling a Job's Bill to the Senate.
Where are the Job's Mr. Boehner, Mr. Cantor, Mr. Ryan?
As with takeing Spending back to 2008 levels, how about we go back to 2001 levels, hell, lets just turn back the Hands of Time & be little Kiddies playing in MudPuddles again. My God, be an Adult & accept Responsibility & lets fix whats broken.
Get To Work!
Last night President Obama came across as the Uniter, unlike the Decider from 2001-2009. Independents will takeaway from this speech, that the President is looking to move America forward, not backwards, as the GOP wants to do!
Enjoy your 2 years in DC , TeaPartyers, because after that, it's time to go back to Protesting in the Streets for your kind.
Reading some of the report about the Financial Crisis this morning, it seems that Greed & NoOne checkingup on NonCompliance of Regulations, were the main Culprit. That & Alan Greenspan, Bernake, & Bush's Treasury man(can't recall the name rightnow).
newdayDAWNING: They rehash the 80's because they have one overarching agenda; bankrupting "the beast" which is progressive government. Thomas Frank spells it out quite clearly in "The Wrecking Crew". Their aim has been sabotage of "progress" for 30 years, through fiscal irresponsibility.
Paul: and the problem is that Americans aren't recognizing that to be the goal. Wait, if there is no government, don't we have anarchy? Sounds pretty anti-America to me! Anna Molly I like that: "fluff and stuff and puff and huff." Yep, their ideas in a nutshell.
Sure NewDay, let's talk about culpability for the debt. Sure, Bush and Cheney were bad, but was it their budget? Did they have exclusive control over the spending? Did the congress agree with any of the spending from '00-'08? How about '06 and beyond, did Pelosi exercise any control?
Huff and puff and litigate culpability all you want. Problem is the cows have come home. We are all in a HUGE hole.
Ok Anna M. what should the plan be? Is freezing a part of the budget going to get us out of the hole?
How can we "win the future" if so much of our money goes to debt serice? And damn straight it was all your fault anyway - go get 'em Anna M.
"don't forget about the shiny trains upon which we will all ride on our way to winning the future"
I liked that part of the speech! It's cool to think we could have high speed rail like the Europeans and the Chinese. I'm sure there were people who doubted our goal of getting to the moon, but we did.
Feisty: I keep wondering that myself. What IS she on. The only thing you have to know about Bachmann is that she was in the final graduating class of the law school at Oral Roberts U. That is why she has this rather "unique" view of the founding of this country AND the Constitution. Those folks create their own reality.
I keep wondering what is in the water down toward St. Cloud and the Northern 'burbs that they keep voting for Bachmann? I guess that is where the righties gather in MN. Off to school to go play with Sey! Later!
I'm holiidng my powder until Sarah what's-her-name comes up with HER rebuttal to the address on Facebook in a few more days. Probably be pretty insightful, and all.
Republicans use it as part of their campaign to insinuate that President Obama is "anti-American," and he sees danger in that, especially with the rabidity of the "birthers."
So, he seizes it, which always sounds forced and awkward, especially last night because it had no context.
But the Gov. of Hawaii is taking care of all that, right?
No seriously, what a moron. You think you might want to make sure you actually have the document before you announce to everyone that you will publish it? Or maybe you may want to make sure you are legally able to publish it.
Maybe if you are hanging loose privacy rights do not apply to you.
She ..... Bachmann is a huge problem for the republicans...and so is that vampire like Ryan .. where do they dig these people up ?..the old party members are so far out of sinc ..with the country...this is 2011 not 1948.... You could see the look on the old military guys faces ...they were lost in 2011 ... It was sad .. once great.. now a former shell of what they once were ...same with McCain..McConnell just angry old men ....we need to thank them... and move them out of these key positions ....its just embarrassing...the UK laughs at America !
The UK especially laughs at the US for trying to put through a nationalized health care system modeled on theirs that has proven to be a disaster, as they try to go in the opposite direction with theirs.
It's easy to see that "these people" are all they have. Or else they'd give us something better. And more and more, they become the mainstream voices, probably because they ARE more and more the mainstream voices.
In regard to Obama's remarks about full access of the ROTC on campuses, and on calling students to become teachers -
What do you think the implications would be for this country and economy, if programs were in place to provide options for military service on par with the ROTC?
For instance, one could sign up for four years of service as a teacher, health care worker, engineer, etc., in exchange for the benefits now available to ROTC candidates.
That's a great idea. How else does anyone plan to incent 100,000 people to become teachers in a system that makes them the constant target of demonization and ever-increasing budget cuts?
Good idea! Although, as a teacher myself, the benefits and salary are really not all that bad I don't think. It is the large class sizes, the lack of respect from parents, students and administration, the lack of time to accomplish all national standards while making them relevant (even if they are not) and the fact that the system is not set up for the realities of society today. Parent's treat school as a day care, and are apathetic to what is asked of them as well as the fact they allow their children to miss frequently, be more social than thoughtful and have the audacity to expect us to fix their myriad of social problems. I love many of the kids, which is what keeps me going, but how long will we sit and be told that it is our responsibility to teach when there is no support at home or in the community?
I have a question for you and the President. How can you degrade our youth by telling them they are not as smart as the students in India and China? Why are all the foreign students coming here for an education if we are so far behind? There are 650,000 jobs given to H1B1 students each year while our graduates (who are as smart if not smarter)stand with their diploma and a big loan and no job. Do you have any idea how many highly trained people are working for minimum wage yet we are to welcome illegals with open arms.
I wonder what China spends on its CSL program every year? You know, the Chinses as a second language program. Like our ESL program. I think only like half of the LA Unified students are in that program.
"I have a question for you and the President. How can you degrade our youth by telling them they are not as smart as the students in India and China?"
A male friend of mine once told me a story about waking up in the middle of the night to find a very drunk, attractive young woman standing by the side of his bed. Apparently, it was a neighbor who had entered the wrong apartment in her drunken state. Do you think he reported her to the police? Uh, no, he made her welcome and they ended up dating for six months. If India and China send their brightest students to our shores to complete their educations, why wouldn't we suggest they stay? Why look a gift horse in the mouth?
I am just ticked off because I have a Grandchild who will graduate with a Masters in teaching soon and our town just closed two schools and told any teacher with less than five years to be looking elsewhere. Why would any child put themselves through all the heartache and expense for nothing?President Obama is not living in the same world I live in.
Because the parents of a child ,whose job this person is taking, has used their whole life to better their childs life. Why should someone just strole in and take jobs that others have been striving for ?
I am a proud Grandma but I will bet my Grandchild and raise you two. They are just as smart and where do you get the figures that China feeds us? They are not too honest in other areas so why would we believe their test scores?
Maggie, I understand what you are saying, but we need to be objective: not every child was raised like yours.
How many of them get passed in spite of their grades because to hold them back would hurt their self esteem?
How many of them play sports where scores are not kept, again, because keeping score hurts their self esteem?
They have iPods, gameboys, and computers, but very few of them have any real conviction of their own competence, because all that self esteem building has deprived them of the opportunity to achieve anything real.
I think that is what Spanky is taking about.
The fact that a million immigrants have gotten jobs in the last two years in this economy speaks to the same issues- American workers disdain jobs they find beneath them. Had they not, those same immigrants would not be employed, now, would they?
maggie the figures are right there in front of all of us: $14Trillion debt, $1.3 Trillion in deficit this year.
How many hours a day do your grandkids spens playing xbox, gameboy, ipod? Have you seen their textbooks? I took a look at my 15 year olds books in civics and social studies. It ain't pretty.
The x box, ipod and such are great tools for getting excellent grades. You do well or at least the best you are capable of or the cell disappears. You will be amazed at the grades going up. Your child will soon be driving age and that works better yet.
Gonna go with No Jo on this one. I remember when I was a kid, and you went home with poor grades (and I did, plenty of times). You didn't get to 'feel good about yourself' until you got it fixed. As a matter of fact, you didn't get to do a whole lot of stuff. If you wanted to play on the team, you had to be good enough to make it through an old form of democracy called 'choosing up sides'.
With everyone talking about lowering taxes, can you tell us where tax rates compare to other Presidents of the last 50 years?
For example, how do 2011's income tax and social security tax rates compare to Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and W. Bush?
How about corporate tax rates? How do today's compare to the last 50 years?
Also, what percent of Federal money comes from income taxes and what percent come from corporate?
Debbie you are asking some questions that the "powers that be" would rather the general public did not have answers to, well the factual answers anyway, I wouldn't expect a reply.
When are the American people going to face the fact that the U.S. has evolved into an unjust and putrid Plutocracy where they have no voice and take the necessary actions to bring back some form of Democracy to our country?
Is it fair to interpret Michele Bachmann's decision to deliver her own response to the SOTU as a clear indication that she plans to run for president? Further, is it fair to glean from a Bachmann presidential campaign that Sarah Palin is NOT running for president?
Last time the GOP provided a response to the SOTU address, we saw Gov. Bobby Jindal's stock take a nose dive? How did Rep. Ryan performance last night affect his stock?
What was President Obama's best moment from last night's SOTU? What was his worst moment?
Was there anything he said last night that could come back to haunt him in a 2012 campaign ad?
Great questions, Frank. If they pick yours, I wonder their opinion on whether Jindal has a future nationally or if that response address was too much to overcome.
Where are the billions and billions of dollars that the FED is printing during their "quantitive easing" scam going? I looked in my mailbox, they didn't send me any. Where oh where could all that money be going?
How about we get back the $700 Billion we just wrote off for the wealthy? Won't that help the $1.5 Trillion dollar debt? Let's see: $1.5 Trillion minus $700 Billion equals $800 Billion. Yep, that did seem to help!

NewDay ~ Forget Bush and Cheney. Just get over it and move on. It was all your fault, anyway.
Ryan is all fluff and stuff and puff and huff. The sad thing is, there isn't another republican who has a better idea.
Or ANY idea.
@ Paul ~ OMG that's EXACTLY right.

I liked that part of the speech! It's cool to think we could have high speed rail like the Europeans and the Chinese. I'm sure there were people who doubted our goal of getting to the moon, but we did.
Except 1. no one wants to ride trains, and 2. no one wants to pay for them. Not cost effective
And one more: Was Bachmann's "response" a precursor to her leading a third party if the Republicans don't do things her way?
Follow up to your Bachmann question NDD... WHAT was she on last night and is it legal?
Trying to watch her eyes made me nauseous...
Then there's the little 'gem' out of her about slavery ending with the founding fathers and the REFUSAL of any of the tea baggers to set her straight!
So much for being a Constitutional expert!
Feisty: I keep wondering that myself. What IS she on. The only thing you have to know about Bachmann is that she was in the final graduating class of the law school at Oral Roberts U. That is why she has this rather "unique" view of the founding of this country AND the Constitution. Those folks create their own reality.
I can't put my finger on it as to why...
But every time I see ol' Crazy Eyes - NJNB comes to mind?
Couldn't be that her admission of her fondness of valium has anything to do with it? Could it? ;o)
I keep wondering what is in the water down toward St. Cloud and the Northern 'burbs that they keep voting for Bachmann? I guess that is where the righties gather in MN. Off to school to go play with Sey! Later!

Wait, wait, I know Amy: 9.4% unemployment. Or perhaps you don't know any unemployed engineers, architects.
Fact is our students perform worse than theirs. Should we lie to ours and tell them it'll be ok? Cause it won't be.

2. While you are focused mostly on the Republicans in 2012, have you heard any talk about Hillary Clinton replacing VP Biden on the ticket?
