Obama to invoke 'Sputnik moment,' 'shared responsibility' in State of the Union

The first official picture of Sputnik, the Russian satellite, from Oct. 9, 1957.

Here are early excerpts of President Obama's State of the Union speech, per the White House:

With their votes, the American people determined that governing will now be a shared responsibility between parties. New laws will only pass with support from Democrats and Republicans. We will move forward together, or not at all - for the challenges we face are bigger than party, and bigger than politics.

At stake right now is not who wins the next election - after all, we just had an election. At stake is whether new jobs and industries take root in this country, or somewhere else. It's whether the hard work and industry of our people is rewarded. It's whether we sustain the leadership that has made America not just a place on a map, but a light to the world. We are poised for progress. Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is growing again.

But we have never measured progress by these yardsticks alone. We measure progress by the success of our people. By the jobs they can find and the quality of life those jobs offer. By the prospects of a small business owner who dreams of turning a good idea into a thriving enterprise. By the opportunities for a better life that we pass on to our children.  That's the project the American people want us to work on. Together.

Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik¸ we had no idea how we'd beat them to the moon. The science wasn't there yet. NASA didn't even exist.

But after investing in better research and education, we didn't just surpass the Soviets; we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs.

This is our generation's Sputnik moment.

Let the teleprompter jokes begin, Beverly. Maybe we should present a Sputnik award to the person who recycles the most lame anti-Obama remarks.

All we PROLIBDEMS have to do now is wait for Glenn Beck to come out with his blackboard and spin this one, and Rush Limbagh AND Sean Hannity to come out with their stark raving, paranoid driven, commentary about the SOTU, if they haven't already done so...

Ah so he invoked Sputnik? Those were the days! But you Commies and Progressives love to bad

talk the greatest era in American history with your talk of segregation and what not. Yes segregation

was terrible, but your Bama don't mind one bit to talk about those days of the Sputnik that gave rise

to such great history. You Commies want it both ways. But the Bama won't get nowhere because

he is a dyed in the wool Socialist Progressive so to speak. The gist of his speech is to control

business with his Socialist policies. That is why he is using the word 'investment'. He doesnt't give

any specifics about investing American capital and resources for its free market prosperity, because

that is not what he means. He means government spending to dictate to business what the govt

wants done for a govt led economy.

          Sputnik Speech.....

these guys are good at writing speeches. Wonder how many will note that Obama has turned NASA into a Muslim feel good outreach program instead of research and exploration.

Funny we beat the Russians to the moon, but now due to Obama - will soon have to rely on them to catch a ride to the space station we built and paid for.

On a serious note, with Obama still milking the Tuscon tragedy and evidently hiring the props permanently, can Obama at least "invest" in a suit that fits for Gifford's intern, Hernandez?

BTW- Good to see again dangerfield.

Maybe Bob90210, he's gonna tellus we are about to embark on Building George Jetson Breifcases for the Future, since the GOP does'nt think HighSpeed Rail is worth the effort.

But, everyone knows that living in LaLaland, where Republicans Reside, allowing the Chinese to Own US, is just a Fantasy!

Or greedy corporations and their GOP lackeys turning American IT and Manufacturing industries into a China and India job stimulus program so they can get bigger bonuses. SHAME!

          HighSpeed Rail?

How would Obama ever power them with his destruction of the energy industry? GE wind mills?

About the George Jetson Briefcases - that makes more sense than his other green dreams.

Think about it. Take the average brief case, cut a 2" hole on the top and a 1/2" hole on the side, pipe the two together with an expansion chamber and jet nozzle and anybody doubt that Feisty sitting on it couldn't gas it at least to the mail box.

You might be on to something there, Rick.

          Tim,

Yea - Shame on Obama and his new BFF Jeff Immelt of GE. GE dumped 18,000 American jobs in 2009 and Obama gives GE $45 million in stimulus when they were making a profit of $1.56 billion. All of those GE solar panels that Obama loves - being made in China.

And Immelt is Obama's new jobs guy!

BTW - The ceremony and respects were done, he did a good job. You not old enough to know milking.

          You guys are too funny.

Oil is a limited resource. What part of that do people not understand? Wind and solar will be there, literally until the end of the Earth. If we don't try, we fail. Then we will be China's b*#!%. Education? Do people really think our children are getting smarter? We keep moving down in the rankings and everyone wants to ignore it. Ignore=Ignorance. If we don't acknowledge it, WE will go away.

Funny he would invoke "sputnik" when he has turned NASA into a Muslim Outreach Organization. It was and is private industry and the capitalist system that got us to the moon. Only thing NASA really does is bring together the various subcontractors and divvy out the taxpayer money.
