Court: Rahm not qualified to run for mayor

Rahm Emanuel (D), a former White House chief of staff

Rahm Emanuel might not qualify to run for mayor after all.

NBC Chicago reports:

Rahm Emanuel's residency fight just took a turn for the worse. The Illinois Appellate Court ruled 2-1 to overturn a Chicago Board of Elections decision to allow Rahm Emanuel on the mayoral ballot. Rahm's Attorney Kevin Forde says "its a surprise."

*** UPDATE *** Here's the court's opinion.

Well Ron, since you are from Indiana, I think you taking it to the Illinois Supreme court will take a while. You may need to get Illinois residency which does not mean renting out a house in Illinois while you reside somewhere else. Just ask Rahm.

I am glad that someone challenged his residency, but he will appeal it to the highest court. Technically, he isn't eligible because he was in Washington for 2 years and his family lived in Washington. Now, if he had kept his wife in Chicago, then that's another matter.

Sorry but we in illinois have currupte politicans, the mobsters are all in New York, remember the arrest of 100 mobsters they were all from New York. We in chicago have a hard enough time making sure the politicans are paid off, let alone having to worry about mobsters.

No we can bail our selves out, we don't need the feds for that, we just passed a income tax increase that still has our income, and corporate tax lower than Wisconson and Indiana after the increase. this has nothing to do with rahn being told he can't run for mayor, as a chicagoian i"m glad, Now we need to figure out a way to carol Braun out of the race, so gery chico former head of the school board to become the first hispanic mayor of chicago.

I hope this tax increase does the trick. If it does, Illinois has something to be proud of. I don't expect a similar effort by California, though. Eventually I expect the Feds to get into the bailout business with several states and many more cities. That will cost us all many billions of dollars.

Rahm not being qualified to run for mayor and not being eligible to run for mayor are two different things.  He's neither, but today the court was only considering the question of the latter, not the former.  :-)

It's a residency issue. He moved his family to Washington DC to serve as chief of staff. And he rented his house out. The Chicago Board of Elections approved his eligibility because he was absent on business of the United States, and had not abandoned his residency. The Cook County Circuit court approved that decision. Now, the Illinois Appellate Court has overturned those guys, and Rahm is about to appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court.

I don't know anything about Illinois politics, but it seems to me that when you go do D.C, to work for the Federal government, you don't abandon your Chicago - ness.

                  42.0% white

                    4.4% Asian

The sovereignty of the people is moderated by the courts to protect against a mad demos and the tyranny of the majority. We are NOT a democracy; we are a democratic republic. In a republic, there is a separation of powers, but that power is still available to any one (hence the ADJECTIVE "democratic"). Be a real patriot and learn about your government instead of repeating like a parrot lies thrown your way.

On to the Illinois Supreme Court. He's certainly more qualified to run for mayor than that republican who lives in Florida but ran for the WV Senate seat. It is my understanding that the election rules state clearly than when a person leaves to take a post in service of his country, military or political, that person retains his/her Illinois citizen status. Maybe there's other things that undo that, I don't know. He voted absentee in Illinois. What all the challenges say to me is the other candidates aren't up to winning on their own abilities.

The internet is misbehaving here, having trouble with First Read and posting. Couldn't get this to post on the Obama Promises thread so I'll try here. If by chance it did show previously, apologies for the repeat.

President Obama has kept most of his campaign promises and those he could not keep were driven by forces beyond his control. It is no surprise that the public remains largely unaware of what Obama and democrats achieved. Republican legislators were determined to obstruct rather than help fix the Great Recession; too much of the media focused on trivial, controversial, and nitpicking nonsense rather than the substance of what was actually happening.

Proof of the media's spin and how it plays with people's minds. Yesterday, the newspaper carried stories about the Tea Party's efforts in Iowa to throw out every Iowa Supreme Court Justice involved in the legalization of gay marriage. In the center was a short article with the Headline "Poll shows Iowans Split on Impeachment". When you read it, that "split" was 63% opposed impeachment for making a decision the voter disagreed with and 36% supported it. Hardly a split since an overwhelming majority opposed such action.

The law says "on business of the United States," and if you don't thin being the POTUS's Chief of Staff counts as business of the US, then you need a vocabulary and civics lesson.

Well, well, well. As soon as you get the decision out of corrupt Chicago, the Chicago Board of Elections said Emanuel was eligible (they'd probably say a ham sandwich was eligible if it was a registered Democrat), the song and dance changes a bit, no? And one can imagine that the state appellate court is anything but conservative in the Bluest of Blue states such as Illinois, and they think this deal is rotten to the core.

There are many corrupt cities in the country, but Chicago is on the short list, the very short list. That city provides us with the very same people running our Executive branch of government. And as Emanuel goes out, another Chicago Daley comes in to replace him. Hope and Change.

Time to step down Rahm, maybe run for Congress. Oh, you can't do that either, you're not a resident!

There are many corrupt cities in the country, but Chicago is on the short list, the very short list. That city provides us with the very same people running our Executive branch of government. And as Emanuel goes out, another Chicago Daley comes in to replace him. Hope and Change.

If chicago is on the short list, please tell us where your from so we can determine if where your from should be on the list.

                                  You're much better off, Chicago.

What's he going to do with all those millions he just raised? Use it to pay for an attorney, I suppose.

Maybe Slick Willy can help you outta this one? LOL!
