Which Democrats voted for repeal?

From NBC's Shawna Thomas and Carrie Dann
Three Democrats voted with all House Republicans on Wednesday to repeal the health care reform bill signed into law by Barack Obama last year.

Democratic Reps. Dan Boren of Oklahoma, Mike Ross of Arkansas, and Mike McIntyre of North Carolina joined GOP lawmakers in supporting the symbolic vote to repeal the law.

The three Democrats were among the 39 who voted against the legislation in November of 2009. Just 12 of those lawmakers are still serving in the House in the new Congress (six retired or left their seats to seek higher office; the remainder lost their re-election bids.)

Boren, Ross, and McIntyre were joined by Democratic Rep. Larry Kissell of North Carolina earlier this month in supporting a procedural measure that teed up the repeal vote. Kissell voted no on repeal today.

The final vote was 245-189.

Me and millions of other Americans have two forms of government run single payer health insurance programs (VA and TriWest). I bet you can't find one veteran or one retired servicemember that would give up their government run health insurance for a private insurance company. NOT ONE!

    Reply#28 - Wed Jan 19, 2011 7:08 PM EST

It is not free. TriCare cost and plus a lot of us bled for this country so it is not free. You sound like you didn't spend too much time in service but long enough to earn the title veteran. THE GOVERNMENT do not run TriCare. The VA is a government entity that most retiree's do not use because of he inefficiency. The VA is so inflexible with appointments that if you want to reschedule with them, it will most likely be 9-12 months.

Also the VA will charge your additional insurance if you have it.

Don't come in here and join the Liberal parade and pretend as if the system is great. The VA is run just like the county hospitals with excessive waiting and drive-thru treatment.

@In the Middle. TriCare cost $38 a month for an entire family. Which is about how much it should cost all families for the new healthcare program.

Retiree's don't use the VA cause they get TriCare, but veterans who aren't retired do. Stop making up the lie that people don't use the VA. That's bull@!$%# and you know it. Sorry dude, but it's not 1965 any longer. If a OIF/OEF vet calls the VA today, they are seen tomorrow. Your lie of 9-12 month wait is a lie.

      #28.3 - Wed Jan 19, 2011 8:44 PM EST

Man I am a 24 yr retiree 18D, E-8, so I'm no frikken private. I'm looking at my 6 month premium right now and it a lot more than $228.00 private.

Evidently you did not read what I said in regards to the VA utilization. I recall making the veteran/retiree distinction.

As far as your 1965 reference, I was 1 yrs old and I just retired 3 yrs ago, so if your trying to equate me to a Vietnam era soldier, you are wrong. I have 4 tours combined OIF/OEF, not to mention earlier in my career Panama Invasion, Desert Storm, Bosnia, Haiti etc .... and I wear the scars and still smell the blood that I shed.

You need to stay in your lane and kick rocks.......

my question is ...how many of the members who voted for repeal are actually buying their own health insurance or are they all at the "trough" and letting the taxpayers pay!?

They, like 80% of Americans, get their health insurance through their employer. They pay premiums just like the rest of us. They were elected to serve in Congress and are paid to do so. Your comments hold no water.

Symbolic yes...but a real waste of tax payers money. So what else is new? The do nothing republicans are real good at wasting tax payers money. Just look how much national debt was added during the bush years....about 6 Trillion dollars or more than double the national debt in his 8 years.

What about all of the pork collected by the republican party in all of the bills passed by them when they were in full control of this country. And then they buffalo american voters into voting them back into power. How ironic....that the some of the american people are gluten for punishment. Haven't they learned a lesson yet? Just watch as the republicans haggle over balancing the budget. they surely won't touch their programs but its going to take some heavy decisions to take control of the budget. Easiest thing to do is cut across the board to balance the budget. Then no one wins and no one looses. Or better yet, how about resurrecting the balance budget amendment. Then is will be automatic every year.

No law is perfect, certainly not the current health care one. We have spent a fortune on educating doctors and medical professionals, last time we went through this drill they ended up working construction, we have too many vacant unpaid for houses this time for that nonsense, there is plenty for them to do and I do not mean showing their lack of sales and marketing skills selling supplements. We needs them contributing to medicine and we do not need politicians telling them what medicine is all about. Good medical care is not an exercise in financial mismanagement, it comes about by maximizing the capabilities of professionals. At this point the doctors know what does not work, it is time to allow them to do what they know does. If the United States had the numbers to realistic show we are the healthiest nation we would not be going through this, but we are currently loosing those with necessary knowledge before they can apply it in an environment that thinks taking care of people only causes Social Security costs to rise. Congress has been trying to do this right for as long as they have been around, there currently are some good doctors in Congress, now if they just can get a few management types that know that printing money is not a solution we may have the chance to do the things in energy that have caused the financial part of the problem in the first place. Let's not act like the current document is the final solution, or it may end up being the Nazi interpretation of those words.

I just reread some of comments, where do demos think the wealth to pay for all this come from? Just print more money, just make it up, keeping increasing the cost while destroying jobs, business and all the sources of wealth. There is no free lunch. One comment was typical, proclaiming that republicans were dumb because if you repeal this and someone without money gets care at an emergency room no one will pay for it and we are really losing money. What ,duh!? Just because the governmant pays for something it isn't fee, there is cost and we pay, all of us. There is what the country is worth, the sum of our wealth and productivity, it is a finite amount. When print more money or over spend( same thing) you simply divide that wealth into smaller units and not increase it's total, so the money each of us have is worth less, causing us to have less of everything, less jobs, lower quality of life, health care, everything. You cannot legislate the wealth of the nation, more services have to paid for. Don't any of you leftys get it, can't you do basic math. It is reality, just because you want the government to take of everybdy for free doesn't mean they can, the wealth to pay for has to come from somewhere. The standard answer tax the rich, which really means what destroy the incentive to create jobs, hard work and the American dream. Why take it away those who earned it. That creates no new wealth it only destroys what there is and you have the same problem. DO THE MATH. You DEMOs are all so darn smart, where does the wealth to pay for all this come from??

              Reply#32 - Wed Jan 19, 2011 7:26 PM EST

I do not understand the logic of the GOP. People who have never paid one dollar in taxes, receive free top quality health care. Then there are people, who work two and three jobs, pay taxes, but have no access to health care. Where is the logic? Every American man, woman and child, should have quality health care, available to them. As a nurse of over forty years, I can honestly say, I NEVER looked at a patients chart, to see who had insurance and who did not. It should not matter. I would rather have every dime, of my taxes paid, to a national health care program, then pay wars, or bailouts for the banks and wall street.

I cannot believe those of you, who are so anti-health care, have ever held a dying child in your arms, because they received health care that was inadequate or too late. Or holding someones hand, as they take their last breath, because they had to choose between one life saving medication for another. Tell me, could anyone of you turn a person away, who has been critically injured, because they have no insurance?

My impression is, those of you who are so determined, to hold on to you wallets, are more concerned about having a Republican in the White House, then you are about your fellow Americans. I for one, would not turn away a Republican or a Democrat, if they needed medical heath. God help you all.

Maybe the Republicans should repeal those extra unemployment benefits. How about health insurance for first responders. Screw them too, right? Why not bring back DADT? How about getting our money back from TARP? Oh, wait a minute that was Ws. deal. This is not a very good start. But I'm sure the speaker and his drinking buddies are hammering them down right now and exclaiming "We did it".

Knowing that the Senate would never even take it to a vote, why would the House spend an entire day arguing and voting for repeal of the healthcare bill? Even if the Senate voted and passed the bill, the President would veto and it could not be overridden.

What a waste of time. How much is the collective salary of the House for one day?

I'm for some extensive changes in the bill but let's be realistic. This is political posturing at it's worst. They should have spent their time and effort on something that was possible to accomplish. Change...not repeal.

I am guessing this vote for something that was never going to happen has cost the American taxpayers roughly $5million, to accomplish nothing which moves the country forward.

Why should they give up their health insurance when over 80% of people in this country get their health insurance from their employer? They are employed, They pay premiums. Your comments make no sense. Keep in mind that this vote would never have taken place if the voting public truly believed that HCR was a good idea. Or were you sleeping in November?

I think that our representatives in the House should spend their time on more important business than to have a vote on the Health Care Program when they know that it will be defeated in the senate even if it comes up for a vote---which is very unlikely. The GOP should spend their time reading this bill and select parts which most people are dissatisfied with and draft revisions to it for improvement. This approach should receive enough support by both parties to be enacted into law and everyone would benefit from their cooperative work. The GOP vote is a total waste of time and we thought that the people that we elected were smart enough to recognize that this approach would not benefit anyone, but cause problems in forming a cooperative attitude and spirit within both parties which will be needed to accomplish anything.

The hippocrites.... they'd take the bread right out of your childrens mouths and disconnect your grandmother from life support. The Republicans and Teabaggers wouldn't give you a glass of water if you were dying by the side of the road. Don't let them fool you, these people don't care about anyone but themselves. The word is "hypocrite."And why do you need to be cared about by people you only read about in the paper or online? These people are elected to govern not hold your hand through life. Grow up and take some responsibility for yourself. Providing health insurance or even the money to purchase health insurance is not a federal responsibility. The powers of the federal government are enumerated and finite.

Retirees already have Medicare - a program that they paid for in advance their entire working lives. Of course, many who paid into the program (my parents included) died before they ever saw one dime of benefits. And the (truly) less fortunate already have Medicaid. As to the rest, well, it really just isn't a federal government responsibilty. See the 10th Amendment for more information.

For all those who do the Bidding for Republicans and Big Business....You want to repeal the Health Care Bill because, 1) you like having insurance companies cancel your policy for any precondition? 2) you would rather those that have no insurance use the emergency rooms that you and I must ultimately pay for, (provided the hospital doesn't go bankrupt in the process).  3) You like having the insurance companies raise the premiums when ever they feel like it. Mine went up 15% this year alone.  4) You believe that America should be a third world nation and not have Health Care (Canada, England and most of Europe, to name a few all have Gov't run health plans.

Why not use some common sense and stop doing the bidding of the Republican (big business party) and right wing religious fanatics.  Is it impossible for those calling for repeal to actually be able to think on their own without being told by the Tea Party, or the Republican Party hacks.
