House Dem compares GOP health care case to Nazi propaganda

From msnbc.com's Carrie Dann and NBC's Domenico Montanaro and Shawna Thomas
In the days following Tucson, lawmakers and the press monitored each modicum of political speech to see if a moment of intemperate rhetoric would signal a break in a “new era of civility” ushered in by the tragic shooting.

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN)

Looks like: Yup.

In a little-noticed floor speech last night (flagged today by ABC News), Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee invoked Nazis, the Holocaust, Germany’s infamous Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels, and – yes – blood libel in describing how Republicans have characterized the health care law as a “government takeover.”

“They say it's a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels," Cohen said. "You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it.  Like blood libel.  That's the same kind of thing, blood libel.  That's the same kind of thing.”

Referencing “blood libel” – the anti-Semitic false accusation about which Americans received a history lesson last week – Cohen added: “The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it -- believed it and you have the Holocaust.”

(Cohen's remarks didn't get picked up until today because they were delivered to a nearly empty House gallery. Members of Congress can give speeches on almost any topic after legislative business is finished for the day.  Many members use it as their way to “revise and extend” their remarks with the hope that it will get picked up by their local stations or newspapers.  These speeches tend to be given to not only empty press galleries, but empty seats on the floor as well.)

The last time a Democratic politician invoked Goebbels to describe a GOP rival (when California gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown drew a parallel between the notorious Nazi politician and Republican Meg Whitman), First Read coined its own theory of what bringing up the Nazi party does to political discourse. Here’s what we wrote then:

You’ve heard of Godwin’s Law -- in an online argument, the person who brings up the Nazis or a Nazi comparison automatically effectively ends (and loses) the arguments. Well, here’s First Read’s Law -- bringing up the Nazis in American politics never does anyone any good. And guess what: The first one to bring it up always sees it boomerang.

Let me be the first to say that this is WRONG!

I don't care if you have a (D) or an (R) after your name!

But, therein lies the difference - I'm willing to say that in this political climate the hate speech & rhetoric needs to be toned down... WAY DOWN!

While the Republicans are running around the country staging a pity party for themselves!

WHAT was up with the Today Show giving one of the hate mongers in chief, non other than Glen Beck air time this morning?

Thankfully, I left the house before I was subjected to the 'why is every one picking on me' routine!

This is the very reason we can't get anywhere. Now if the issues of guns does come up at all it'll be because the right wants to protest against assault weapons.

You know how afraid the Repubs of this President taking the country away from them. So they carry assault weapons.

Speaking of Louie Gohmerts, in front of cameras Mr. Gohmerts was holding a copy and railing against health care legislation when he accidentally uttered these words--HCR "was written by smart people". The truth inadvertently escaped from Gohmert's lips.

Easy, Cohen completely and accurately reflects a majority of his constituents.

Why are these posters so stupid that they keep asking how xyz gets elected? Americans are nutballs, you have two varieties left and right. The rest, moderate civilized thinking people, are an infinitely small 3rd world minority with no voice in government or press. The rest of you are either going to church or going for a handout.

Then look at the kooks sitting before the cameras. Not one single one of them could work for any other Station. They brainwash their listeners. Everything on there is about Democrats. Never anything about Republicans. You can't reply to any of their comments. You have to say nasty things about President. Otherwise you get rejected by their bodyguard Disque.

Now Now, We must share in the name calling, hahaha

Republicans own the names Communist, Nazi, Marxist, ("Conservative" is pushing even my limits, lol)

All Communist countries actually ARE Republics ran by very similar policies advocated by the Republican party within the USA, Nazi's did actually emerge from the Weimer Republic and a lot of their corporate "machine" thinking was adopted into the GOP during and after WWII, Karl Marx WAS actually a Republican

But Democrats definately earn the names Liberal and Socialist and do push for more Government control and have a spend spend spend mentality when it comes to their entitlement programs, minimum wages, benefits for employees, Healthcare, etc

The far right and the far left take both of these to extremes, But the best for the USA is a moderation of BOTH parties positions, Corporations MUST make a profit, But Their workers must also make a decent living which also includes the benefits they deserve, This is how we get company loyalty and pride in American workmanship that increases a companies business, profits, and worth.

Work together,,,,,,,,,,Make America what it was born to be, THE BEST

UH....... Actually it appears that it is YOU who are dumb. You CANNOT own "as many and any type as" you so choose. Try purchasing an anti-tank rifle and see how far you get. Or how about trying to buy something like say,... A 105 mm gun? Try stockpiling a few dozen assault guns and see who knocks on your door Patricia.... I think your name: "Patricia Paulson" is a deviation of the name "Pat Paulson"...... He was ANOTHER comedian.

And to get back on topic, let me state, Steve Cohen is not very far off base, when he says it is akin to Nazi propaganda. Many of the past Republican base took lessons from Hitlers political machine. I could name at least 4 important Republican leaders that were in one way or another connected to the Nazi apparatus from WWII. But to save time I'll name just one. G. Gordon Liddy. He is a radio spokes person for the Republican Party today. He was sent to Federal Prison for being one of the chief members of Richard Nixons attempt to create a one party system in America. (Watergate.) So..... Congressman Cohen..... Hat's off to you for having the balls to say what we all know sir!

The Left and Right both hurl all kinds of insults at each other. And I'm obviously not a fan of the Right. I think there's two notable differences about the current state of vitriol between the Left and the Right.... The Right started demonizing the Left in its current manifestation about 20 years ago or so with angry talk radio. And the Right practically owns talk radio and has for years- for every one liberal station there's about nine or so conservative ones. And this echo chamber proved to be very powerful and my personal opinion is, the Left got sick of being demonized by the Right and got just as angry as them eventually.

Except in the most recent years, you don't see Republicans politicians getting shot, Democratic supporters don't bring guns to Republican politicians' constituent gatherings, Republican politicians don't get hanged in effigy, having their home addresses broadcast at large where then nut jobs go and sabotage their homes by cutting gas lines, you don't see Republican supporters getting their heads stomped on, etc. There's no comparison as of late.

And conservatives- don't try bringing up the case of the stray bullet that hit the Eric Cantor's office- the police themselves concluded it was indeed a stray bullet.

There's vitriol on both sides of the aisle, both it's not equal. The Right needs to own up to its institutionalized hate. And it's become a multi-million dollar industry so institutionalized Rightwing Hate isn't going away. If it could, I think most people on the Left would chill out after a while if the Right could ever stop demonizing everyone and everything.

Beautifully put Bo. I have long advocated a blending of libertarianism (personal freedom) and socialism (collective best interest). The government should be strong enough to protect citizens from those with the power to use and abuse the citizenry without regard (corporations, the rich, etc.), but weak enough as to not infringe on personal freedoms. This is a balance that takes careful consideration, not broad-sweeping extremes (which both parties offer now). Unfortunately, most people, and therefore most politician, can only see their own viewpoint, and resist, violently at times, anything that questions their views. So both the Reps and Dems need to stop thinking that their way is best, and start trying to create a balance by working together. And if you have to decide whether to favor the American citizens, or the corporations, then favor the citizenry.

To the other redhead: You may be feisty, but I was born a natural redhead LOL... I am accused of being a Liberal, and, in fact, voted for Obama. That said, I won't be voting for him again and thank goodness for America and what she stands for, which is government by the people. I voted for the best representative in our last election, not the party.

When I read the content of Democrat politician Steve Cohan's speech I wanted to ... that's best left unsaid lol. Name-calling is the ad hominem fallacy in formal debate and INSTANTLY loses any user of vicious labels the entire position he represents.

btw... why do vulgar and meaningless insults lose respect? Because they substitute for evidence and cogent logic Any user is as good as saying, "I am ignorant of facts that support my feelings on the question, and incompetent to speak on any cogent aspects of the issue."

Don't vilify your opponent; it merely reflects on yourself.

It would only take a few minutes to research the political climate of Germany while Hitler was rising to power. It would have been nice if the congressman had taken just a little time to do so before he started name calling. But I think we all know that the truth is not something we associate with politicians. Pre World War 2 Germany has been researched to death and the policies that created the Nazi party is also well documented. I challenge anyone with an open mind to go read about it and come up with the same conclusions of Cohan which are false in all respects.

Patricia, define destroy? Interesting, I thought that was what redneck, cowpoke, Duhbyaaa did with his behemoth debt, his massive de-regulations and the sinking of the middle class down into the poor class. Yup, that ole white trash Bush inherited a surplus and not a debt, unlike Obama, gave the richest American pigs tax breaks [what a hee haw] and reversed many of our environmental safeguards, like filthing up the air and water while opening the gates to kill this nation's ecosystems or all the reasons mankind exists. [Bet you never guessed why you are breathing, right. Duhh, It will take years before anyone can bring this nation back to the way it was before that ole hick bombed this nation through every category? He had only one agenda -- to make his wealthy pals richer! And, most Americans were too stupid to see it.

Most of civilized Europe have health care and laugh at Americans for being so brainwashed with cliches, like socialism, commies, African goat herder and birther. A rose by any other name is always a rose, regardless of its god-given label, and their civilized societies deem health care a national inherent right and a national pride. Interesting, Americans are always behind the progression of other civilized societies.

Of course, Americans value their shoot em ups more than all the rest on Earth as the number one gun toting folks on the Earth, second only to Yemen. Now, that's something to really be proud of, right! The one freedom many Americans do not possess is the freedom of thinking. It has all been droned into their minds so long, they wouldn't recognize the truth and reality if it came up and wrapped itself around their gun racks, mules, stirrups and sweet tater pones, right?

''I haven't seen a half-monkey, half-person yet.''

''So here you have Barack Obama going in and spending the money on embryonic stem cell research. ... Eugenics. In case you don't know what Eugenics led us to: the Final Solution. A master race! A perfect person. ... The stuff that we are facing is absolutely frightening.''

—Glenn Beck on his radio show, March 9, 2009

''I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. ... No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out. Is this wrong?''

—Glenn Beck, responding to the question 'What would people do for $50 million?', 'The Glenn Beck Program,' May 17, 2005

Beck: This president has exposed himself as a guy, over and over and over again, who has a deep-seated hatred for white people, or the white culture, I don't know what it is.

Hmmm. That must have made things real uncomfortable around his white mother, or the white grandparents who raised him.

Beck ran a similar line on his show yesterday, too, characterizing Obama as "this is a guy who has real problems with race."

And it's liberals who were therefore guilty of group hypocrisy with all their red-faced screaming about the hate-filled rhetoric allegedly spewing from the right, all the while absolutely REFUSING to accept any such culpability.

It was a truly disgusting show and one I'm not likely to forget for a long time - and only served to reinforce my disdain for liberals in general.

There is no such thing as an anti-tank rifle. (Idea died in 1930s)

A 105 mm gun? You don't see a lot of 5,000 lb. towed field artillery pieces on the racks in gun stores.

Stockpiling a few dozen assault weapons? Why not, if they are not restricted and you can buy one, or twentyfour. There is no limit on how many you can buy anymore than there is a limit to how much ice cream you buy, or how many cars Leno owns. If they are restricted (full auto) get a tag for every trigger group. Need a suppressor/silencer - same thing. Hate to tell you but, they are everywhere.

How is it the Federal Government can tell everyone YOU MUST HAVE HEALTH CARE INSURANCE BY 2014 and then claim it is not a GOVERNMENT CONTROL MANDATE???? They don't care if you can "REALLY" afford health care coverage or not, if they look at your gross (not net) income and decide you can afford it, not only must you buy it, but you very likely will not qualify for any sort of subsidence from the Federal government. They will not give a damn if your net income is say (for example only) $50K a year and you have legal obligations that add up to $49,500 and heath insurance cost $3 to $8K. That will be your problem not theirs unless you fail to get the mandated health care then they will be glad to assist you in affording it by fining you several thousand dollars a year to further burden you.

The left wants to talk about Natzi Propaganda allegedly coming from the Right, perhaps they should stop and listen to themselves and take the time to read the bills they rammed down our throats for once. It looks like they have be caught with their hands in the collective cookie jar and are trying to divert attention away from themselves in hopes they can continue to pull the wool over the eyes of the unsuspecting Obamasheep. Time will tell if their diversionary tactics will work or not. QED in November 2012.

Glenn Beck isn't a hater, he's an inferno of fearful delusional paranoia which is really too bad because he has a great, but so far untapped, potential to be a mainstream voice of conservative common sense in our country if he could just drop the delusional fear and paranoia within his rhetoric.

Concerning the main topic; It's not a smart comparison to make between the GOP and the Nazi agenda, and I agree that it tends to boomerang back to the accuser. The GOP needs to get a lot more precise about exactly what in the Health Care Law they don't like. Using nothing but vague ambiguities as your reason to be against it is not a proper argument. Get the printed law out and point to something in particular. Read those parts aloud. Explain in detail what exactly it is that you object to in the law. So far I haven't heard one Republican make a logical argument concerning any of it. They seem to be against it simply because they didn't author it, which is a very stupid fallacy to be making, especially when large parts of it are nearly identical to the GOP proposal back in the 1990s.

Being against it without explaining exactly why you are against it is not a proper political argument, and the rest of us should simply ignore you because you're acting like a child.

Wow. Feisty...on one hand I see you talk about toning down the rhetoric but then in the same comment, turn around and talk about Glenn Beck as a hate monger. Isn't that the pure definition of what you dislike?

His interview wasn't about a "woe is me", but instead a discussion of his new book which describes how HE broke his addiction to alcohol and changed his own life. The psychologist that co-wrote the book with him offered up info about how Glenn was a textbook case on how to change your own life with the things psychologists are taught in school.

They then moved on to talk about how Washington and D's and R's aren't going to fix our problems, but we ourselves have to fix our own problems starting with ourselves. I didn't see any hate spewing in the interview but then again, maybe I saw a different interview.

Rrobeson: "Why are these posters so stupid that they keep asking how xyz gets elected? Americans are nutballs, you have two varieties left and right. The rest, moderate civilized thinking people, are an infinitely small 3rd world minority with no voice in government or press. The rest of you are either going to church or going for a handout."

...I agree, you couldn't be more correct and right on the money, nutballs on both sides of the aisle, and getting nutier and further away from the middle with each passing day. I consider myself to be a moderate and a centrist, but I find myself in the Twilight Zone with no party to support the Middle Class anymore. How does that song go?: "Stuck in the middle with you".

          Steve Cohen is right.

He didn't say that the GOP are the same as the Nazis.

He said that the GOP likes to use some of the same propaganda tactics the Nazis used.

It may not be politically correct or nice to say so, but it's the truth.

Have been doing to this country since the 80's when dingbat ronnie raygun- with his last synapse firing-

claimed that poor people are poor because they want to be- that trees pollute more than cars- that for school lunches, ketchup was a vegetable- republicans have been getting away with murder since the 80's- time to rein those losers in- starting with their drunken leader- he passes on state dinners and mourning speeches because they're places where his excessive drinking would be noticed by everyone.

Well, the civility tone down of rhetoric certainly didn't last very long, did it? It's obvious, too, the Republicans can't stand the idea of having the table turned around on them with the very same tactics used by their own Party. Repealing the health reform is not going to happen no matter what they try to do. And stopping of the Govt. funding is only going to hurt the economy even more. That's the plain and simple truth of the facts. So everyone needs to start learning how to work with the program and if possible to be willing to make beneficial improvements or changes to the program. But to waste more time trying to repeal the law, is not accomplishing anything, except for more bickering and not getting the critical work done (which is far too often not the case for Congress). Everyone needs to stop acting like the schoolyard bullies, and place more energy into some constructive ideas from all sides. We've had enough of the tearing down. Now it's time to repair and improve the conditions.

It's a shock seeing an article on MSNBC that reveals Democrats ranting in an uncivilized manner. It's obvious that these Representatives do not care what their leader says or they assume that he was only speaking to his opposition. It is not a shock to see some of the denials by liberals. It is irresponsible for anyone, and most especially an elected Representative to Congress, to claim that their peers in the opposition are Nazi-like in their thinking and actions. It is this unconscionable display that causes the rifts, not comments by media and radio personalities.

One person claimed that Moderates, not Conservatives or Liberals, make up the majority in the United States. This is true. What is forgotten though is that Moderates do not make up the majority of the voters. In most cases, moderate is synonymous with apathy and they do not bother to vote because it is inconvenient for them.

Edward, why should I? It is an opinion and an observation. An opinion because everyone I have ever met who considers themselves "Moderate" do not vote. Anyone who says "I vote for the person not the party" is not completely truthful, to themselves or others. The Party of the office seeker is critical to how he or she will vote. Not necessarily on the critical issues but on all the small ones that result in federal spending. How many "Independents" do you know who are Conservative? They wear the "I" badge with pride when the truth is, they cannot make up their own mind so they let someone else do it for them.

An observation because it is reflected in all polls taken. Take time to study the polls and not just the numbers sometime and you'll see.

Smooth retort Jake, guess you take civil discourse to heart, no?

            Ernie-

You are exactly right. I wish these Obamasheep would wake up and see the bill for what it is. Yes, we need to perfect our health car laws, but making people purchase health care is a government take over. I've read the law and the only parts I like are making it illegal for you to pay more if you have a pre-existing condition and you can't be denied for having a pre-existing condition Other than the two things I just mentioned, scrap the bill and make those two things the law. You'll get the same results without a huge entitlement program that this country can not afford.

Wow, this whole repeal/replace/whatever on HCR has just gotten started and we've already had our first Nazi reference. Kinda hard to go lower than Nazi's, so I'm wondering where things will degenerate to next? We have deficet and debt ceiling battles looming on the horizon and people are invoking Goebbels? Maybe it isn't so much a matter of vittriol as it is a prophetic statement on the future of our country in comparison to the Third Reich.

              To bboomer-1466467:

Your comments are so full of "hot air", full of holes, narrow minded, and clearly ILLOGICAL. One of your country-boy remarks states that moderates/independents do not vote because they cannot make up their mind. You have not met all the Independents in the U.S.; nor do you have any valid polls to even begin supporting your so called limited statistics from among your friends. Therefore, you cannot say, "They do not vote". Speak for yourself, but not for others when you don't have all the facts. It 's no surprise Independents, etc. wouldn't want to vote for anyone with such limited, narrow minded party thinking when you make such false and naive statements as yours. That is just more of a schoolyard bully with typical diatribe, rhetoric comments from the "Righteous Right Wing", who can't stand it when the tables are turned on them.

              ForWhatItsWorth,

UH....... Actually it appears that it is YOU who are dumb. You CANNOT own "as many and any type as" you so choose. Try purchasing an anti-tank rifle and see how far you get. Or how about trying to buy something like say,... A 105 mm gun? Try stockpiling a few dozen assault guns and see who knocks on your door Patricia

              So, who is dumb?

"BOB", I guess YOU are as dumb as she is. Ever hear of a recoiless rifle? 106mm..... We used them in Vietnam as anti-tank weapons. AND the twit that you are defending didn't mention anything about buying the "guns" in a store. Where did you conjure THAT up from? Reading comprehension is not your strong suit is it? And as far as assault weapons go there ARE limitations on the number you can have on hand if they are full-auto. Even if you possess a Class III license. SO... Now you can go read your copy of Mein Kampf and work on your next screwy defense of the fascists.

Godwin's Law, First Read's Law... A nice way to say "Ooh, you compared me to one of the most reviled people that ever lived... therefore, you lose the argument!"

I also like Santayana's Law: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" - George Santayana

The problem with de-legitimizing comparisons - even to Nazis - is... what if the comparison is accurate?

Perhaps the comparee's aren't guilty of a genocidal Holocaust; or they haven't invaded a country or bombed the capital city of another nation into a rubble-filled parking lot. But when you take propaganda lessons from the Third Reich, then there is a real danger of a replay of the Third Reich.

Let's not forget how a mob of angry, intolerant thugs can take control of a government.

Jody, I cannot see the logic in anyone trying to compare Obama to Hitler.

At the same time, do research the philosophy of Karl Marx. A rather good overview, with appropriate links to sources, may be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Marx#Accusations_of_antisemitism

Both sides of any issue should be cited to be persuasive in a discussion, and although opinion must not be confused as news, it still must be based on demonstrable facts

Although Mr. Obama attended Harvard in graduate school, I still have concerns about the direction he insists on for our nation. Harvard has an old and well established reputation for academia, but that doesnt mean its professors are irrefutable. In fact, I look at other Harvard graduates in politics today, and the approach to our solutions seems to me to lack pragmatism ... which I define in this case as common sense.

And common sense is the most basic of survival skills. This nation was, in fact, founded upon it. You might say, an "idealistic pragmatism." They definitely are not mutually exclusive.

One man's good guy is another's evil monster. While Americans weren't starving to death while practicing their genocide, the post WW1 Germans were because of war reparations and were having to feed their children cats and dogs so they wouldn't starve to death.

                Feisty Redhead...

How exactly is Morgan Griffith's statement not civil? No one was personally attacked... there were no allegations of socialism or communism (which you libs seem to take such great offense to).

I think that Griffith's statement was quite civil and somewhat reminiscent of a speech that may have been made by one of our forefathers.

But keep looking... I will be sure to chalk one up for the other side when you can show me a mean and nasty slur...

Just jumping into the fray, here, but I'm a little irritated by the idiotic "Godwin's Law". Oh, please!!! I concur that if someone incorrectly accuses another of being "Nazi-esque" because it is simply the worst example they can drum up, then fine.....assume their argument is invalid (which it would be anyways if they could not support their argument with proper context!) But I've seen Tyler "The Amazing Newsvine Monitor" intervene and suspend people's accounts because they used a reference to Nazism in their post! Ridiculous! If the analogy is correct, and reasonably presented, then no harm is done and the discourse ought to continue.

Hell, I'm going to do the same thing as Newsvine and arbitrarily make my own "law" called "Indy's Law".....the next time someone uses the word "libtard" or "repuglican", their argument is automatically considered invalid and void of recognition! How's THAT for forum gusto!!!!!

skor... you state that the United States is the only "country on the globe" to resort to nuclear war. Well, don't think it isn't for lack of others trying. And please get this correctly... We are the only country in history to use nuclear weapons so far and it was to defend ourselves.

Do you know your history? "December Seventh, Nineteen Hundred and Forty-One, our land of Freedom was defied. December Eighth, Nineteen Hundred and Forty-One, Uncle Sam replied...."

The Japanese Empire attacked Pearl Harbor on the 7th, while we were at peace with them. This was a surprise attack and over 3,000 people including sailors on our ships as well as civilians were killed or wounded. Today, the U.S.S. Arizona, which was sunk, is a Memorial to those who died, including over a thousand of her sailors still entombed there. http://www.americainwwii.com/stories/shipthatweeps.html

A good article with source links may be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Pearl_Harbor#Controversy

Several viewpoints are included and quite a few good pictures.

Why emphasize Pearl Harbor? Because we were attacked without warning and without provocation, and we defended ourselves. Not only that, the Empire of Japan was already primed to attack the Southeast countries of Asia ... "The attack on Pearl Harbor was intended to neutralize the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and hence protect Japan's advance into Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, where Japan sought access to natural resources such as oil and rubber." But read this for yourselves. The Japanese Imperialism and its aggression of Asia was a long time plotted and planned... in secret.

                Stop and think about this...

                1) only two two nuclear bombs, primitive compared to today, were dropped in order to END THE WAR we had NOT started.

                2) our technology was far advanced from any other world nation in terms of nuclear energy back then. No one HAD nuclear bombs besides us or they would have used them.

My uncle was killed in WW II and I have my aunt's memorabilia willed to me. It hit me close, skoro...

And yes... another poster here quoted Santayana... top thinking to my mind. There are several versions of his words... the one I like is,

"Those who do not study the past are doomed to repeat it."

                Get with the program.

P.S. lol Indy Patriot... Good on you! ;)

Anyone expressing surprise at the end of 'civility' in Washington is either childishly naive, or else entirely feigning said surprise to score rhetorical points.

That said, no one is addressing the veracity of the non-Nazi components to Cohen's speech: namely, his thesis that Republicans are not being honest about the health care legislation. He is entirely correct. Republicans have not been good faith partners in getting health care reform done, largely because they didn't want to help feather Obama's cap by giving him the ability to say he came through on a campaign pledge. And now, the repeal effort (fueled entirely by rhetoric predicated on the falacy of 'government takeover') is aimed at continuing the battles fought over health care last year, with an eye toward the presidential politics of 2012.

'Civility' isn't dead; it was never even born.

The Real Matt.... You are right, the rest of Cohen's comments point to the dishonesty used by republicans in the debate.

One battle does not end a war; neither does one lapse in civility end both sides efforts to keep trying. No one expects perfection but the general tone is much improved from two weeks ago. Incivility, vitriol, ugly, mean and hateful has been the normal for 2 1/2 years, it will take time and continued effort by all of us not just Congress. If you're from TN, send Cohen an e-mail expressing disgust with his choice of words. These two weeks were a start but there's a road to walk to get to the finish line and there will be rocks, ruts and mud between.

Agreed. I think its really sad on two counts. 1) that Republicans have been able to get away with the half-truths and flat out lies regarding Health Care Reform without anyone in the press really taking them to task over it, and 2) that Cohen was foolish enough to invoke Nazism and the holocust when making his argument. By doing so he in effect negates anything else he said during that speech, be it true or not.

Hate to break it to you people but both sides lie. The dems lied about the health care bill and told truths - So did the repubs, on both counts. They call it spin and they "spin" everything to color it to their point of view. I am so tired of hearing dems call repubs liars when they are just as guilty as as repubs. Makes no sense and doesn't get anyone anywhere - it is just more hate speech. If something is said that isn't true - state it out loud, call the person on the carpet about it and maybe some of this will go away. But, unfortunately, the journalists - and I use that term loosely, who are supposed to keep our politians honest, are just as guilty of "spin" as the politicians. The real people out here never get an honest answer to anything. So, we get spin from the left, spine from the right and we just have to go figure it all out for outselves. But, we are all still going to disagree.

Matt... and others who try to point out different aspects of Cohan's speech as viable... Once any person goes over the top in vilification and humongous name-calling of an opponent personally rather than dealing logically with the opponent's views, anything else the insulter says is automatically trashed.

Stop making excuses for this politician. His judgment skills were neutralized if not totally unbelievable by the analogies he attempted.

Well Matt....... Remembering history, even as far back as Christmas , 2009 seems to be difficult for some people. In truth, bipartisan cooperation in the HRC was not possible because the Democrat majority gathered behind closed doors and worked out the 2000+ page manifesto without Republican assistance. When Republicans offered ideas or amendments to the bill, they were either ignored or out-right refused by Pelosi & Company. As far as Obama's campaign pledge, how many promised did he have to break to carry it through? No CSPAN, no tax increases, openness. This is not predicated on "government takeover" of healthcare but of unconstitutional mandates by Congress (later referred to as "taxes" by the Democrats who said it would NOT increase taxes). It is also predicated on the will of the people who voted the Republicans into the majority in the House. In other words, they have kept the campaign pledge made. Passed 248 to 189 btw.

Apparently you missed the many, many liberal posts which did not blame the violence-suggesting speech as the cause but rather that such speech is dangerous and needs to stop. It is heard by the sane and also by those who hear something else. What liberals said is words have consequences and dangerous words can cause great harm. So, what I'm "sick of" is those who try rewriting what was written. Were there a few liberals who directly blamed the rhetoric, probably but you cannot make the claim all liberals did--if that assumption were correct, then I could say that all Tea Partiers promote violence and are racists because I saw the signs at their rallies and be as honest as your comment.

Um, it's the Republicans and Tea Party people that have acted like little children standing in line at the grocery store when mom tells them they can't have any candy. They start whining, screaming and crying that they want this and they want that and they are going to get back at anyone that keeps them away from their candy.

Just go back and look at the videos from the Town Halls and you will see more childish, uninformed Republicans and Tea Party people than you can imagine. Hell, they even ridiculed and virtually told a woman in a wheel chair at one Town Hall to get out because she didn't deserve to be there.

Republicans and Tea Party people make bad children look GOOD lately.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." - Joseph Goebbels

I see no reason to make Nazi comparisons in any given situation and and actually find comparisons to Nazis to be pretty offensive since it was the ultimate evil and nothing can be compared to the horror it was.

However, I don't see why using a quote from a man who happened to be a Nazi, that happens to be true, is offensive. People believe the lies that are fed to them consistently by republicans and no one can deny that. There are many people that believe every lie about the Affordable Care Act, because the lies were repeated over and over and over again.

You have to understand Cohen. He's done things like this before when he was in the Tennessee Senate. Cohen is a chip off the old peanut. He's a nut. Yes, I know it seems unlikely that insane people would be elected to Congress, but he was.

Forgive him, for he knows not what he does.

Funny...I have been saying the same thing for months: the right wing is telling lies over and over and over, and the people start believing it. A page right out of Hitler's propaganda playbook. Case in point: I have a friend who watches nothing but Fox news and he actually still believes the President was not born in America.

Another case in point: Who in America knows the real name of the health reform act? Everyone refers to it as "Obamacare," which is just another right wing slur on the President's effort to help turn our country around after eight (stolen) years of Shrub-Cheney.

captcrash, you seem to forget what Fox commentators said during the 2008 campaign. They said over and over that Obama may not have been born in the US. That's same thing as saying he never was to anyone that watched Fox News.

It's amazing how quickly the right forgets the things they have said in the past that show them to be liars and hypocrites.

The name of the Bill in the House is "Affordable Health Care for America Act". (H.R. 3962) The Senate named it "Quality, Affordable Health Care for All Americans". (H.R. 3590).

The problem is there is nothing "affordable" in this bill and it is NOT for "all Americans". This bill is a disaster and needs to be repealed. We need to start over before we screw it up so much that we cannot fix it. The Senate's title says "for all Americans" except the Congress and all these companies linging up to be exempted for reasons beyond belief.

And to Obama..."you can keep your insurance and costs will not increase" Talk about a LIE!!!!. As of January 2011, I was forced to change insurance and my monthly premuims increased $167 and out of pockets expenses went through the roof. Many of my co-workers have met their deductibles already in the first month, where previously, we would have paid a small co-pay.

My wife is critically ill and I am forced to remain in a job that is "a pay check" in order to have insurance. I am not working in my field of training. I am very greatful for my job and insurance, but I am stuck with no options and forced to yield to whatever insurance restrictions are placed upon me. The first time she ends up in the hospital will cost me $5000 out of pocket before insurance will pay ANYTHING. Previously, I would have paid a $500 hospital co-pay using my Flexible Spending Account and moved on.

I am one that would benefit from a National Health Care program so that I could return to my field of training, so hear me when I say this bill in its current state MUST BE REPEALED.

And before you jump to hard on people calling it Obamacare, check your own reference for our previous administration!!!!

Republicans have no right to complain.  As one of God's chosen people, Cohen is entitled to call those with whom he disagrees Nazis, accuse them of creating a holocaust, and, of course, assert copyright ownership of the term "blood libel".

YourTruth4u, the right went on the attack right after Tuscon. Amazing the selective blindness of the wrongs committed by the right. The Republicans are the Number One fomenters of hate and divisiveness in the US. You can't go a DAY without hearing lies and BS from the likes of Fox, Limbaugh and Beck. The Republicans have actively supported things like this and many have even said these things themselves. Over 90% of the lies and hateful rhetoric comes from the right. It doesn't take much to verify that either.

No one is trying to do away with capitalism, it's just that capitalism should play no part in our health care. No one should make a profit from people's suffering and that's what's been happening. The insurance execs pay bonuses per individual turned down for coverage. Health care and ecuation is a RIGHT! Abortion is a constitutional right also, but repubs are always trying to take that right away. Our declaration says everyone has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Unless you're a homosexual. Then you don't have the right to marry. If you feel it's okay to be spending your/our health care dollars for executive bonuses in the millions, then go right ahead and buy private insurance. But I would rather all my dollars go to health care and not corporate welfare.

Both of you extreme right and extreme left folks on here are doing nothing except stirring up @!$%#. Don't you all get it that you are all the same? You sit there and tell everyone to think your way, and when someone has an opinion you don't like, you blast them for it.

That's ok, your politicians love you for it. They know that they can say something to piss off one group or the other and send ALL of you into a frenzy. And while you are distracting each other with bull@!$%#, they are going to continue doing what they want to do to stay in office.

                                      Go ahead, keep fighting.

I merely stated what was obvious. North Star was not adding any useful input to the conversation, he was just berating another poster.

                                        Holly,

I'm confused. So you are saying that doctors should not make a living? Most people would agree that you only go to a doctor when you are sick, so isn't the doctor making a profit off of your suffering? I do agree that insurance companies need a new business model to redirect their current mission to reward executives by how many people they can turn away, but the reality is that you are just replacing one entity with another...private insurance with the government.

I'm just a little confused too on how anybody here can disallow somebody else from stating their opinion? It's not as if I or you or anybody can over-ride our typing by typing louder or switching on a "kill" button (pardon the incivility of the reference, should have said "termination" or some other innocuous synonym) so that your words won't be seen. Though I'm glad to see that Ann Coulter has finally made the Conservative Commentators "Hall of Fame."

I am tired of these buffoons who cant articulate why you should support something and can only smear their opponents. That isn't going to fix anything. Calling people names is what losers do. It only alienates people and makes it harder to bridge the differences for not only this issue but future issues. Too bad TN elected such a pitiful excuse for a leader.

So who should we get really angry about here - the guy who lost it or the idiots making insane, unsupported arguments? You might want to read Paul Krugman's article today discussing the Republican spin / outright lies on healthcare.

Or hey, if you live in Iraq, well, we are making sure that health care is universally available to those people, because every other modern democracy has that and we want to teach them all about democracy....so maybe if the Republicans can authorize the Pentagon to invade ourselves we can keep Health Care Reform?

Excuse me, but has anyone here considered that Jared Lee Loughner may have just "lost his cool' too? No, like Cohen, everything he did was thought out before being acted upon. Cohen was giving a "floor speech" to a virtually empty auditorium after hours. His rancor was planned with hopes that something like just this discussion would happen.

If any of you liberals had bothered to listen to Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, and O'Reilly you would have heard no charges of incivility against the Democrats except against Sheriff Dupnik. They had nothing but respect for Obama's speech at the memorial, though were concerned that the students may have been a little inconsiderate and that the President should have subdued their exuberance. That is until today.

I've seen no reference made to the 'poison pills' in the HCR as enacted.

Reps who realized they couldn't stop it added some few nasties during the 'compromise to get it done' stage last year.

That way their, 'this fight isn't over yet', demonizing for election day effect would be easier to sustain.

The public has always looked in the direction of the most noise.

The question is, is the health care law a takeover of health care by the government? Why don't you report on the truth or falsity of what the GOP says? Were Palin's allegations of "death panels" true or false? They were false, as are all the negative GOP allegations about what the health care law represents. But you'd never report on the fact that Republicans lie like rugs. The fact is, what Rep. Steve Cohen is true.

You are the liar. False accusations with no facts to back them up. Hateful comments like yours are doing nothing but making more people aware of how ugly the Democrats are. Keep it up. You're making a total fool of yourself. And by the way, I understand there was enough truth in the "death panels" to have them removed ... they were real. This health care law is EVIL!
