Reince Priebus elected new RNC chairman

The new chairman of the Republican National Committee is Reince Priebus.

Priebus won the post after seven rounds of voting at the RNC's winter meeting, besting four other candidates - including outgoing chairman Michael Steele.

Priebus, the chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party, served as the general counsel of the RNC beginning in 2009 (he stepped down from that post to run for the committee’s top job.)

The Wisconsin native ran unsuccessfully as for state Senate in 2004.

He was considered the frontrunner going into today’s RNC votes, with the most on-the-record support of any candidate.

Below, you can watch his announcement video from December, when he formally entered the race:

Good luck to you! Your new leader is a lawyer who used to work for the NAACP. I thought that was the polar opposite of what the right wing wwould want.

Then how could you claim to be a republican for Obama? IF the Republicans were so Racist you should have disavowed the party and become a Democrat.

BTW - the NAACP was founded by 32 Prominent Black Leaders and 3 White People The Three White people were as follows. The Republicans were already in Favor of Civil Rights Legislation, But the Democrats controlled everything at that time.

William E Walling, an Journalist who was a socialist party member who later quit the Socialist Party. Mary White Ovington, a social worker and also socialist party member who "set aside her socialist beliefs" to help start the NAACP. AND Dr Henry Moskowitz was a Republicans and later a member of Roosevelts "Bull Moose" Party.

I assure you, that back in 1910 - most African Amercians were either no party or Republican. African Americans did not migrate to the Democrat party until 1963 and beyond. 1963 is the year that Democrats finally began to drop their opposition to Civil Rights Legislation.

@DB, you are being extremely misleading here. The conservative movement abandoned the democrats right around the time that LBJ signed the civil rights act ending segregation. The mass migration of civil rights supporters from the republican party to the democratic party started in the 60's and was cemented in by the beginning of the 1980 race for presidency.

Don't pretend for a second that the republican party that exists today is the republican party of Abraham Lincoln and civil rights, when the popular dogma of the Republican party today correlates the civil rights movement and social justice with marxism and violent communist extremism.

You say that before you know this guy. This wasn't dump the black guy, it was a very close election and was more like get someone who is a little/lot more effective. In a lot of ways, Steele was caught in the middle of the moderates and conservatives. He tried to make peace with the Tea Party, and that hurt him with the moderates.

This guy is a proven get it done guy and appears able to do what steele could not do - get both the moderates and conservatives to work as a team. Steele brought an awakening of African Americans to the Republican party, that should not stop because we got the largest contingent of African Americans elected to the House. Several are pretty stong conservatives, especially Col West is certain to move up quickly. Furthermore, Preibus worked as legal counsel to the NAACP - no hurt their.

Steele routinely put his foot in his mouth. He was not a good spokesperson. Leave it to the left to turn this into a racial thing. In my view the party needed a change, regardless of color, as, believe it or not, many of us don't what race you are, we care how good you are at what you do.

If this had been a race thing, Steele would have won, as it would have helped the dimwits who think race matters.

This Preibus guy is not ok. He was the one that kept substituting "Obama" for "Osama" when he was saying "Obama should be executed." But he did it three times which questions his honesty when saying it was a simple mistake. Was it? I don't like this person. Definitly don't like having him lead the RNC. More division ahead with someone who can't control his mouth.

Priebus served as a legal counsel for the NAACP. So, he just doesn't like Obama - what conservative does like Obama as a leader! I noted a few months back that African Americans are getting restless with Obama too, they don't think Obama is doing enough for them. They are correct - his policies hurt the African American Middle Class as much as the White middle class. Under Obama, the middle class is falling back into the poor class - that means there is a higher hill to climb to get out of poverty!

I am also tired of race playing a part of assessing someone's ability to lead. I am black and I am tired of people, especially my own, doing it. Obama's blackness, or anyone else's, should have noting to do with assessing his effectiveness as a leader. Some of his actions and policies are good and some are bad. It would be wrong to agree or disagree with everything any leader does. This Black thing is getting way out of hand. The race card shouldn't tossed around. Still alot of injustice out there and crying racism at every turn will undermine its value when it is actually needed.

I,m so tired of Obama being called black. He is lighter than me and doesn't have strong black features. He looks more like a skinny white guy with big ears. not black. That goes back to the slave days. That is not America in my head. Half black half white? I think he played the race card.

So, he got barely a majority (and did not get Boehner's vote), meaning we still have an internally-divided GOP. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I can only hope that this guy does a better job of controlling the financial activities of the RNC. Mr Steele leaves with a history of divisiveness, questionable spending of the party's assets, and a history of unproductive goals.

I also believe everyone in the press would have overlooked these shortcomings, if he was black, and a Democrat!

It's that shallow mined thinking right there that pushes blacks from joining your party. The republican party is no longer the same party of Abraham Lincoln or Frederick Douglass or Martin Luther King Jr. It's a joke, they're trying to hold on what they have left. It is time you understand that this is a diverse country and it will remain that way.
