Congress: Focusing on the gun debate

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-L.I.) pushed to ban high-capacity gun clips on Monday in response to the Arizona shootings, but quickly got pushback from her Staten Island rookie colleague,” the New York Daily News writes.

“A longtime Senate gun control advocate announced plans Monday to introduce legislation banning high-capacity ammunition clips like the one linked to a weekend shooting that left six dead and an Arizona congresswoman gravely wounded,” the AP says. “Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., said he would introduce the measure to re-establish a prohibition that lapsed in 2004 on clips that feed more than 10 rounds at a time.”

Roll Call: “The latest iteration of the gun control debate on Capitol Hill -- touched off after Saturday’s tragic events in Tucson, Ariz. -- is set to focus on banning the type of extended handgun magazine clip used in the shooting that left six dead and 14 wounded.”

A day after Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Heath Shuler (D-NC) said they were going to start carrying guns to their events, the Sergeant at Arms says members should not do that. "I don't think that's a good idea," Terrance Gainer said on ‘Good Morning America.’ "I think we should leave the law enforcement and security to those professionals." He added, "I've been a policeman for 42 years and I don't think introducing more guns to the situation is helpful.”

“FBI agents on Friday arrested a Colorado man who threatened Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and his staff.” And: “The man, whom the Denver Post identified as John Troy Davis, reportedly was upset about his Social Security benefits and had previously threatened to ‘shoot’ Bennet’s staff as well as ‘set fire to the perimeter’ of Bennet’s Denver office.”

One sick person is stronger than the House of Representatives. One mentally ill man can defeat the FBI, the local Sheriff, and the Secret Service. Why? Because he has partisan bickering on his side. He is aided and abetted by the N.R.A. and politicians of both parties too scared of examining our options for gun control. An apathetic population, addicted to the "excitement" of violence, sits on its couch and allows nine year old girls to be gunned down by violent, sick members of our "family" as if it were a part of the entertainment culture. What a nation of wuzzies we are. What a dysfunctional, weak society.

Mike Barnacle called it this morning...stop calling it "Gun Control" and start calling it "Gun Safety".

Can the NRA at least agree that if the United States Army won't give a gun to Jared Loughner because they believe he's mentally unstable then he has no business being allowed to buy a gun as a civilian?

This question is for all of you this morning. I live in Anne Arundel County in Maryland, my husband and I where were in Walmart yesterday evening shopping , we were waiting in line to be checked out. There was one person in front of us, a male he asked the clerk if they sold hollow point bullets, they clerk looked to see if he had the specified hollow point bullets that the customer asked for and found them. The clerk rung up the hollow point bullets on the register and the male customer left. After the customer left I asked the clerk why didn't you or the register ask for ID from the customer, the clerk stated Walmart policy doesn't require ID from the customers, unless the customer Looks under age to Walmart employees.I asked because I have worked for Walmart in the past and I always asked for ID regardless of Walmart's policy. I told the clerk this is very of setting to me! I reminded the clerk of the shooting that has just happen to the Congresswoman and the other people in Arizona. This was appalling!! I ask you.. if you don't look under age to an employee when the employee is not certified or a specialist in profiling you can just let " Anyone" come in a store and purchase Hollow Point Bullets???

We need to revisit gun purchasing policies in the U.S. immediately!!

The majority of Americans own guns.

80% of them hold more than 10 rounds.

They belong to the NRA, I belong to the NRA.

      It will not pass.

I'm physically handicapped, elderly and disabled, when my home is invaded by 5 home invaders, how many bullets do I need in a magazine to survive against 5 home invaders, keeping in mind I can't reload fast with only one hand which is arthritic? Especially at a time adrenaline takes control of me during the invasion causing my hand to shake, and I'm trying to "bob and weave and duck for cover", as fast as an old man can, (I guess I'll hit the floor, hope I don't break a hip)

Also, which are those "magic bullets" that are always one-shot-stops?

Also, where can I get some of those "Smart Bullets" the army has, those with the "built-in guidance system"so each of the bullets in reduced capacity magazine finds the exact spot on each attacker regardless of my hand shaking and them moving?

Isn't reducing elderly disabled people's magazine capacity a violation of "equal protection under the law" in favor of 4 or 5 home invaders, to the detriment of the elderly disabled person?

Also, who do I contact to file an Americans with Disabilities complaint against legislators trying to assure my death in my own home by causing me to call a "time out" for 5 minutes while I reload ... do robber respect "time outs" .. do I have to make that "T" sign with my hands like they do in sports? I hope not, I only have 1 hand, it's arthritic and I can't do the T-sign ...
Can you prove a NEED and PURPOSE acceptable to everyone for the OPTIONS you WANTED in your car? Do you NEED the ice cream in your freezer? THEN why are you legislating based on me proving a need and purpose?

I suspect If people can't get hi capacity PEZ dispensers, they'll just carry more guns, like Charles Whitman did... why not pass a law against murder if you think laws stop criminal behavior?

NOT every wacko uses this or that gun or magazine or knife.

Every single one of these crazy nuts who tries to kill others randomly wears shoes .... they help them get from place to place to hurt MORE people, and sometimes are used in escapes ...
