New Speaker John Boehner released this statement on raising the debt ceiling:
I've been notified that the Obama Administration intends to formally request an increase in the debt limit. The American people will not stand for such an increase unless it is accompanied by meaningful action by the President and Congress to cut spending and end the job-killing spending binge in Washington. While America cannot default on its debt, we also cannot continue to borrow recklessly, dig ourselves deeper into this hole, and mortgage the future of our children and grandchildren. Spending cuts - and reforming a broken budget process - are top priorities for the American people and for the new majority in the House this year, and it is essential that the President and Democrats in Congress work with us in that effort.

As they said in Ancient Rome... let the games begin! *thumbs down*
I heard a clip of some newly minted tea bagger on the Ed Show last time raving there is NO way he will vote for and increase & when asked what the consequences are if they didn't - replied: I DON'T know!
Am I the only one who wants to hear what exactly they plan on cutting other than the 'symbolic' 5% of their own budgets which is a pittance!
Suck it up America! You elected these morons and now you have a front row seat to the action!
Is this the pot and kettle situation. When Nancy was asked what was in the HCR bill, her response was I don't know, lets vote on it and find out. Or something right along those lines. Now a TP does it and you call them a moron. Did you call Nancy a moron when she made that statement? So now we see that both parities have morons in it, I am still trying to see anything meaningful from your post, which all I see is a far lefty picking on a rightie for a stupid statement...do you have anything of value to add to these boards besides name calling and generalizations? I never seen it from any of your posts in the past.
So.. what you're saying is... two wrongs make it right? Uh huh - I get it know! lol
Because Nancy did it.. Boner should do the same thing... so much for 'change'!
PS: I wasn't talking HCR I was referring to the debt ceiling... *focus*
But the context of saying 'I don't know' is the same context (that is focus on the whole picture not just one piece). I never said two wrongs make it right did I. I did say they were both morons, but you only want to say that if the person is a GOPTP. I say it regardless of the party. I have no party lines, I vote with the person who I believe will move the country in the direction that is best for the country, not for their party.
Of course there's no such thing as a symbolic vote against the debt ceiling.

Alan,
Liked the link. Especially the bit where Gibbs tried to say that senator Obama's vote against was for "failed leadership".
And the Liberals have gotten real quiet on what was different from Senator Obama voting against the debt ceiling increase in 2006, but now as President, he's all for it.
Slight inconsistency there, correct Libs?
Robert Gibbs, the Baghdad Bob of the Obama administration. That dude is one loyal soldier for Obama.
Joanna- are you for it, or against it (the raising of hte debt ceiling)?
Either way, you are going to have to admit to agreeing with you-know-who at some juncture.
I’ll ask the same questions I did on First Thoughts.
Will the Republican controlled Congress generate and present a budget that includes deficit spending?
If the budget does include any deficit spending how can they argue/vote against raising the debt ceiling?
Republicans balancing the budget...., that's like having an argument with yourself..., and losing...!
This is like having to sit thru the sequel to a movie that you know will be bad, because the original movie was horrible.
Is there no one paying attention...?
Right out of the gate, Republicans, want to repeal a law that they have determined will do more harm than good, nevermind the "NON-PARTISIAN" CBO says otherwise, but wait it gets better. This same NON-PARTISAN" CBO, has determined that the cost to repeal this law would would actually, plunge us further into debt. And the Republicans answer to that...., well the CBO just doesn't have all the correct figures.
ok, so then who does have the correct figures, and since the Repulican led Congress is so absolutely certain that the numbers lie, then maybe the first order of "doing the peoples business..." is to bring transparancy by establishing confidence in the agency(s) which we all rely on to give accurate information so that the best decisions can be made to benefit "ALL of AMERICA....!"
Seems to me, any reasonably intelligent governing body would want to have the most accurate facts in hand, prior to opening his or her mouth....., but thats just me
"and it is essential that the President and Democrats in Congress work with us in that effort. "
Really, Mr. Speaker? Since you spent the last two years working with the President and the Democrats in Congress on......gee, I've forgotten already......what was it again?
Hmmm lets see..... Oh that is right, the Dems didn't need any Rep support in either house, the dems had the super majority. They had trouble passing bills within thier own party. How quickly the Dems forget this fact and point the finger at the Reps.
Do they have no shame? Just after extending expiring tax cuts for the wealthy that will cost a trillion dollars over the next decade ($100 million a year) now they conviently need to cut $100 million a year for programs for the middle class or they will let the government default on our debt. Their agenda is clear and is funded by big business, insurance companies, hedge fund operators, wall street and banks. They want to cut programs for the poor and middle class to give tax breaks to the wealthy and special interest groups and they want to end health care benefits and undo regulations to protect the middle class from insurance companies, banks, oil companies, coal companies, tainted food, etc. I don't think thats what America voted for and if it is then you tea baggers got what you want.
The cuts were extended for 2 years....at $70B per. Thats not quite $1 trillion.
Even 100M for 10 years is only 1 billion
In addition, now Speaker Boehner bargained away the "tax breaks for the rich" back in September/2010. Paraphrasing Boehner "If we have to let the tax breaks for the wealthy (those making over $250,000) to get a deal, I'll do that".
But yet Obama offered the Republicans the extension on all of those tax breaks, and more with his 2% reduction of the SS tax on every ones payroll.
Also, it's interesting that Obama is requesting an increase in the debt ceiling. As a Senator, this is what he had to say when Bush requested the same. Obama quote to follow:
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure,” he said on March 16, 2006. “Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership . Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit.”

Tax cuts are tax ear marks.
No - they have no consciences nor any shame - I believe they would step over dying starving babies in the Streets of Washington, D.C.
JoAnna- is the tax breaks being extended for two more years a good thing, or a bad thing?
Please share...
Also I might add that they created the deficit in the first place with two unfunded wars, the unfunded Medicare drug program and tax cuts without spending reductions. They were handed a surplus that they turned into a deficit and then created a self fullfilling prophecy that we need program cuts to stop the defict that they created by cutting the revenue that is needed to run the government.
Oh yeah, those wars...that democrats voted for as well.
Hey cookie, they voted for military action. They did not vote to keep the wars off the books or turn it over to private contractors.
But they have continued to vote for funding them.
Larry,
Your correct the people who just took power are the same ones that caused the problem in the first place. I expect more of the same results; more jobs sent off shore and the continued decline of the middle class. It seems that a lot of people have forgotten how we got where we are.
And yet Larry - Boehner weeps because he wants everyone to live the American Dream. Wait a minute - what is his version of the American Dream? A TV in every home and a chicken in every pot. Oldie but.......
Mark my words...they are going to use the debt ceiling vote as leverage to get health care reform repealed, social security cut to nothing, medicaid eliminated, etc.
What I find striking in the message from Speaker Boehner is the hubris: "it is essential that the President and Democrats in Congress work with us..." Rather, it is essential that the House (and Speaker Boehner) work with the President and the Senate.
WOW ...all this from the guy who has to take his shoe's off to count to eleven !
Hey, John, where are the jobs?

Republicans to cut the deficit? That's funny. Cut taxes and rein in government spending? Hilarious! Take back our country? Please stop, your killing me. Being fiscally responsible? Oh yeah, I'm a believer. Lie to us again? "Hell yes they will"

If Boner was serious - he would (1) raise the tax on the rich (2) Stop Corporate Welfare (3) Stop Agricultural Welfare (4) Start imposing stiffer tariffs
But he's not serious - he wants to cut spending for those least likely to be able to withstand it.
Boner is a pig.

The more I watch Boehner the more I realize he is in over his head. Does anyone see this? He is not stable and he will probably have a nervous breakdown before the budget is even finalized. I don't feel sorry for him. I feel sorry for the people that will suffer as a result of the delay of the budget.
Bla, bla,bla bla......... since when is weeping John an economy expert?
