Robert Gibbs to leave White House

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs will leave the White House -- not just his position as press secretary.

His official departure will be after the State of the Union. No successor has been named, and that search may be expanded if a new chief of staff -- potentially ex-Commerce Secretary Bill Daley -- is named before the end of the week as some administration aides expect.

As for Gibbs, he'll continue to work for the president but as an outside consultant, essentially setting up the Washington-arm of the Obama re-election campaign. David Axelrod, who will be leaving the West Wing around the same time, will be setting up the Chicago-arm of the Obama re-election campaign.

*** UPDATE *** Here's the president's statement on Gibbs:

"For the last six years, Robert has been a close friend, one of my closest advisers and an effective advocate from the podium for what this administration has been doing to move America forward. I think it's natural for him to want to step back, reflect and retool. That brings up some challenges and opportunities for the White House - but it doesn't change the important role that Robert will continue to play on our team."

I'll miss Gibbs. He had zero influence on policy, but his actions were a constant and consistent reminder of what a fraud the current administration is.

Both positions either as White House Press Secretary or as Chief of Staff require broad understanding, and acumen regarding national and international affairs including pressing violent conflicts involving the United States and affecting most major parts of the world.

A conflict in visions stands at the center of major international and national crises in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, or elsewhere. Whether in mass killing, genocide, or intractable conflict, ideology is usually present and plays important role. By ideology (political, religious, economic, social, or some other) is meant visions of social arrangements and human relations that provide meaning and hope for a group. Such ideologies can identify others as enemies who stand in the way of their fulfillment.

American political leadership generally, and those involved in trying to resolve conflict specifically would do well to check out the 2010 book - Visions in conflict: International Perspectives on values and enmity. The volume contains essays written by experts from around the world on powerful vehicles of conflict resolution-namely, religion, psychology, education and training, psychotherapy, and sports. The essays shed light on the process of peace and reconciliation in challenging venues from South Africa and the Congo to Rwanda, and other parts of the world such as Kosovo, Iraq, etc.

I think Robert Gibbs is doing a great job as a press secretary i am afraid his removal on this job might affect overall performance of the white house because people forcus much on the president on the president press seceretary than president himself i will advice the president to allow this guy to continue as the press secretary for now i think the president will need him more in the white house than campaign manager

I'm coughing from laughing so hard at all you anti-Gibbs buffoons. You think it's only the Dems who have been talking "election" for the past two years? Do you really? You a-holes...........and what have the GOP's been doing? What about Bay-at-the Moon -ner been doing if not salivating at the prospect of replacing Nancy Pelosi? At least we're not consumed with saliva dripping from our mouths like he is! And what about Cantor and what about McConnell? Maybe you should all "zip it up" and stop making fools of yourselves.

Some of you need to watch a news channel other than Fox. Of course if you really listened to Fox, you would know that the right wing of the Republican party is racist.

Another liberal running at the mouth.... "racist". If nothing goes there way, they immediately say the word "racist". Figures doesn't it???? They have nothing else but that word to fight back with. HOW SAD IS THAT ?????????

If you ever watch fox then you would see that have both conservative and liberal commentators on a great deal, (yes there are heated arguments <-[spelling?]) as well as, meaningful discussion about the issues. I have also watch CNN, and MSNBC and I haven't seen much if any conservative commentators that can get a word in edge-wise.

Also the race card does seem to be used by a lot of the left, when people don't agree with them.

Well that is my two cents take it or leave it.

Conservative does not equal racist. I liked Colin Powel -before he endorsed Obama, of course. I also like Candi Rice.

I can name a whole long list of liberal white ppl I don't like...Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Dodd, Barney Frank, Arlen Spector, Olympia Snow, Gillibrand...

newHounder: Get out of bed earlier. Scarborough does 3 hours of conservative television on MSNBC. Pat Buchanan appears in studio on almost every show through out the day. Rachel Maddow invites conservatives to come on her show on and off the air constantly. They are afraid of her to the point that they refuse to say her name properly in front of their own audiences.

They are not afraid of her, it just does no good to beat your head against a brick wall for long. Talking to her would accomplish nothing. She's a socialist and any amount of talking will not change that.

I liked Gibbs as press sec.. He was very personable. He came across as an everyday guy, and explained stuff in a fairly straight up undertstandable manner and seemed honest. It will be interesting to see who replaces him.

However, im glad hes still working for Obama. Best of luck in the new gig Gibbs!

In these new party roles, strictly for re-election campaigns...will "we the people" be paying for this?

These salaries and associated costs should be paid for 100% by the party funds. This also should include the use of AirForce 1 and other support services used for re-election.

I was upset until I read why Mr. Gibbs was leaving his job and it serves as a reminder that it is time for all of us supporters to start setting aside a little money monthly to start funding the 2012 campaign. It worked for America last time. I was thinking I could not afford to donate, Michigan is still struggling from 8 years of Bush, but listening to the Conservative agenda, I can't afford not to donate! Thank you, Mr. Gibbs, for the excellent job you have done and I will be supporting you as you begin the work to re-elect President Obama. FOUR MORE YEARS!!

We all know the game by now I think. How can we really put a stop to this crap and get on the right track??

I like how the libs say the reps are only for the rich, rich, rich...hello, have you heard about Mr. Obama's wealth..umm he isn't poor. He isn't like middle America. He maybe a cinderella, rags to riches story but he hasn't lived that story in a very long time.

The only thing I need to remember is his poor Aunt and how she was discovered living on the government dime, and in the country illegally. Did she get deported? No! She was getting disability and housing assistance and wasn't even a citizen. She is now a political refugee - at least I think that is what they settled on calling her. Regardless, she gets to stay since she is related to Obama her life could be in danger if she went back. I don't even think he had seen her, even knew she was here - real close relation there. What a crock!

What a turn over in the White House....has anyone done a comparison study of turn over in previous administrations. Seems in a real company when there is a lot of problems maintaining competent people in the upper positions it is usually not them that is the problem. You need to look higher up. Just a thought. I have learned never to give a friend a job to help them out. It was a hard lesson.

I would like to see someone stronger in that position of Press Secretary. I want someone that can really tout the accomplishments of the Obama Administration. Someone that can go Head to Head with the misinformed public, media and nay sayers and set them straight as to how America has made notable improvements in the past 2 years.
