Robert Gibbs to leave White House

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs will leave the White House -- not just his position as press secretary.

His official departure will be after the State of the Union. No successor has been named, and that search may be expanded if a new chief of staff -- potentially ex-Commerce Secretary Bill Daley -- is named before the end of the week as some administration aides expect.

As for Gibbs, he'll continue to work for the president but as an outside consultant, essentially setting up the Washington-arm of the Obama re-election campaign. David Axelrod, who will be leaving the West Wing around the same time, will be setting up the Chicago-arm of the Obama re-election campaign.

*** UPDATE *** Here's the president's statement on Gibbs:

"For the last six years, Robert has been a close friend, one of my closest advisers and an effective advocate from the podium for what this administration has been doing to move America forward. I think it's natural for him to want to step back, reflect and retool. That brings up some challenges and opportunities for the White House - but it doesn't change the important role that Robert will continue to play on our team."

what I do not understand... I listen to President Obama stating how the Republicans have plenty of time to "campaign" for 2012- but what is he doing with his staff setting up re-election???

It is such a mess

Well, I've got an idea.....let's elect Sarah Palin and she can have Elisabeth Hasselbeck as her press secretary..... Now we can have something to talk/laugh about.

Gibbs came across to the public as an arrogant know it all, he down the public, the republican party and anyone else that didn't agree with him. He stayed way to long in the position and actually did damage to Obama, with a loss of respect to the position.

Hopefully they can find a better replacement.

I personally think Gibbs was an embarrassment. I never remember hearing a spokes person use the sound-uh, as much as he did. Also, one does not have to be a racist just because you think the President is doing a terrible job(unless you believe in Socialism).

Gibbs' job is to properly and skillfully convey to the press and, in turn, to the American people what the president's agenda is and explain clearly what it does for the country. He failed miserably on these points. He ought to go.

They have done nothing but abuse power and waste taxpayer money on their parties and flights all over the place. He has to be sent packing with his wife and 2.5 kids!

All of you Obama haters, seemed to suffer from the same disease of short term memory. It is easy to critique and complain about what President Obama hasn't done to your liking, but I didn't see any of this same disdain for the former president who is largely responsible for the shape of things today, particularly financially. Rather than complain and hate, get your passive agressive asses up and become involved. Why not run for office yourself and make a difference. Oh, my bad, that really would be incomptence at it's best! Just continue to do what you do best...sit back, whine and complain and point the finger at someone else for all your woes...and the country's. Just don't forget the significant contributions you made to how we got to where we are, by not saying anything during the tree years...oh, my bad again, that should read Bush.

I can't believe how so many people r so full of such hatred, and let's just call it what it is,racism, that they pit against each other 2 the point of ignorance! U did a very good job,Gibbs and Axelrod, tho' I do think u'r running scared of republicans...who, by the way, r not anything 2 b afraid of...'u reap what u sow.' or 'what goes around comes around'...President Obama's not afraid, and being the best president we've ever had, u might want 2 watch ur back a lil' closer. I pray 4 u'all daily!

Any one who blames Bush for the state of things really has a short memory. Most of the problem started when Clinton was in the White House and it was decided that everybody should be able to buy a house. Money was given to anyone that had a heartbeat and it was only a matter of time before that house of cards would collapse and it did.

keepinitreal, you don't know any of us. I'll just bet that alot of people on this forum, LIKE MYSELF, have contributed to our party in a good way and made a real difference in this country. HOW ABOUT YOU????????? That is the stupidest comment I have seen on this forum. You sound like and probably are a moron when it comes to the history of our country and where this mess got started. Which was in the Carter, Clinton years. Our course you probably haven't done your homework or may not even know how to read!!!!!!!!

                  For JonboGreen:

"Thanks for your on-going servcice to your country, sir. (I say on-going, because there is no greater service that anyone could do for their country over the next two years, than to do what they can to re-elect the President!)"

Actually, I can think of a few "greater service":

Join the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines - Any active duty military.

Join the reserve component of one of the above.

                  Join the Coast Guard.

                  Join federal law enforcement.

                  Join State law enforcement.

                  Join local law enforcement.

Hell, I'd even settle for PAY Taxes!

                  Cheers!

It sounds to me that Obama's entrusted henchmen are being put in a postion where they can do the dirty work that will be required so that the treacherous " NEW WORLD ORDER MUSLIM-MARXIST " and his minions can finish the job of making this country into a " THIRD-WORLD TOTALITARIAN STATE. " My prediction: If allowed to finish his first term in office, America will have voted for it's last " so-called " president. Wake up America!!!!!!!!!!!!
