Morning Roundup: Witch hunt or the witching hour?

On NBC’s Today show this morning, Christine O’Donnell (R), who lost her bid for U.S. Senate in 2010, denied allegations that she misused campaign funds for personal expenses – rent and paying her mother as a consultant, for example. She blamed it on the “establishment,” but stopped short of wanting to use the word “conspiracy.”

A point of context: All of these allegations were known during the campaign. What’s new here is that there’s now a federal investigation under way that will tell us if, in fact, she violated campaign-finance law.

Here she is on TODAY being interviewed by NBC’s Ann Curry:

Here’s MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell’s TODAY show piece on the allegations:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Here’s O’Donnell’s statement from last night, per Campaign Manager Matt Moran:

"We have heard absolutely nothing other than the same unsubstantiated allegations and rumors that have been circulating in the press for months. If anything does materialize from this rumor, we will continue to fully cooperate as we have made every attempt to ensure we are in compliance with all rules and regulations. The politically motivated charge was all started by false accusations by Christine's political opponents, and ratcheted up by former Biden staffer Melanie Sloan and CREW with their false claims. Let us be clear: there was no impermissible use of campaign funds. Period. This is just an ongoing effort by the George Soros-funded CREW and other liberal groups and individuals to intimidate and threaten Christine, even after the election."

Christine O'Donnell continued, "Since anonymous sources are being taken seriously, please allow me to share some tips I've received and keep the tipsters' identities anonymous. We've been warned by multiple high-ranking Democrat insiders that the Delaware Democrat and Republican political establishment is jointly planning to pull out all the stops to ensure I would never again upset the apple cart. Specifically they told me the plan was to crush me with investigations, lawsuits and false accusations so that my political reputation would become so toxic no one would ever get behind me. I was warned by numerous sources that the DE political establishment is going to use every resource available to them.

So given that the King of the Delaware Political Establishment just so happens to be the Vice President of the most liberal Presidential administration in U.S. history, it is no surprise that misuse and abuse of the FBI would not be off the table. And further connecting the dots, do you think it is just a coincidence that Melanie Sloan was a senior Biden staffer just before she joined CREW and filed her complaint against me?!

"I have faith that our supporters and the general public will see right through these thug tactics. This is simply an Establishment trick to stop the anti-establishment Tea Party movement in its tracks. Heck, the Presidency is at stake in 2012."

Murkowski to be certified today: Alaska’s long statewide nightmare is over. Lisa Murkowski (R) will be certified officially today as the winner of the Alaska Senate race, the first time since 1954 that someone has won a write-in bid for the U.S. Senate. The governor and lieutenant governor will sign her certification today and then it will be hand-delivered to Washington, so she can be sworn in by Wednesday when the new Congress convenes. Because of the four-hour time delay, they’re going to have to get started early.

Or is it? NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell reports that Joe Miller (R) is holding a press conference at 6 pm ET on his plans. He has said he might keep up the legal fight despite the fact that he’s unlikely to win future appeals and the Supreme Court is unlikely to take up the case.

‘Tea Party-ization of Congress’: The Washington Post reports, “When Republicans take over the House next week, they will do something that apparently has never been done before in the chamber's 221-year history: They will read the Constitution aloud. And then they will require that every new bill contain a statement by the lawmaker who wrote it citing the constitutional authority to enact the proposed legislation. Call it the tea party-ization of Congress.”

This is all part of a new package of rules released by the House Rules Committee:

“As promised in the Pledge, members will not be able to introduce a bill or joint resolution without a ‘statement citing as specifically as practicable the power or powers granted to Congress in the Constitution to enact’ it. This will serve to refocus members of Congress, with every bill they introduce, on the Constitution that they take an oath to support and defend.”

2012 Watch: After the NAACP mounted a national campaign to free two black Mississippi sisters serving an unusually long sentence for armed robbery, Gov. Haley Barbour says he’ll issue them an early release. They have served 16 years of their sentence. The men were robbed of $11. One of the sisters is in poor health; she requires regular dialysis. The Washington Post notes: “Barbour, who is weighing a run for president, announced his decision a week after he ran afoul of civil rights advocates. Last week, Barbour backtracked on comments he made about the civil rights era in Mississippi.”

In Recess: President Obama made six recess appointments, bypassing Congress where his appointments had been held up by Republicans. One of the appointments is the first American ambassador to Syria in five years. And the deputy attorney general James Cole is particularly controversial, because he equated the 9/11 attacks to criminal acts.

Vacation, all I ever wanted: President Obama’s vacation will be extended by a day. "After the extended lame duck and five-day delay of his trip here, he's just trying to squeeze in more time with his family before returning to Washington,” White House spokesman Bill Burton said.

Speaking of vacations: The lieutenant governor, Kim Guadagno, who was out of state at the same time New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was on vacation at Disney World was actually in Mexico to be with her ailing father, suffering from Stage IV cancer, the South Jersey Courier-Post reported. (Hat tip: Political Wire).

Just a reminder: The ASPCA sent the following statement to First Read on President Obama’s phone call to the Philadelphia Eagles’ owner on giving Michael Vick a second chance:

“The ASPCA would like to remind the public that Michael Vick pled guilty to helping torture and kill dogs because they didn't perform well in his dogfighting ring. While we do believe in second chances, we also support the conditions of Michael Vick’s probation, which prohibit him from owning, buying or selling dogs for three years from the date of his July 2009 release from federal prison. Mr. Vick’s performance on the gridiron may continue to attract attention and accolades, but we believe the final measure of his newly found compassion toward animals can only be borne out over time."

In non-U.S. political news: Former Israeli President Moshe Katsav, 65, was convicted of rape and could face four to 16 years in prison.

YEA, RIGHT. Be very clear. No ‘Tea Party-ization chicanery; don't make anything or anyone disappear; Christine.

She blamed it on the "establishment," but stopped short of wanting to use the word "conspiracy."

What's hysterically humorous about Christine 'the teen-age' Witch & Professional Senate Candidate is that she actually believes she's relevant enough to warrant a conspiracy... lmao

Can you say paranoid dumb sh!t?

Speaking of Michael Vick - why no mention of the comment made by right wing nit wit Tucker Carlson about how 'Vick should be executed?' Here's another idiot that can't get enough of the peppermint shoe polish!

Does that faulty logic apply to Sarah Palin as well?

We are well aware that she has no PROBLEM killing 'God's creatures' for the sake of ratings?

Have you clubbed an innocent animal to death today?

So We Won’t Forget:

During his first two years in office the 111th Congress passed more laws affecting more Americans since the “Great Society”. Time to review:

  • To avoid a major economic depression, Congress passed the largest economic stimulus bill in American History.
  • Congress passed into law CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE to include an additional four million children and pregnant women.
  • Congress passed into law HEALTHCARE REFORM giving 32 million Americans access to healthcare.
  • Congress passed into law the Lily Ledbetter bill insuring EQUAL PAY FOR WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE.
  • Senate approved the first Latina Supreme Court justice.
  • Senate confirmed a second female Supreme Court Justine, bringing the number of women on the Supreme Court to three.
  • Congress passed CHILD NUTRITION legislation which expands the federal lunch program.
  • Congress passed pro-consumer legislation regulating abusive practices of credit card companies.
  • Congress approved 1.4 billion to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.
  • Congress approved 15 billion to start small business growth.
  • Congress passed the FINANCE REFORM ACT to regulate Wall Street.
  • Congress passed approved the Bush tax cut for another two years.
  • Congress passed DADT repeal so all American military personnel can be treated equally
  • Congress passed the 9/11 HEALTH CARE ACT for 9/11 First Responders.
  • The Senate ratified the START nuclear treaty with Russia.

  • Additionally, President Obama returned science to its rightful place by lifting Bush restrictions on federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

  • President Obama set and implemented a timetable for withdrawing US combat forces from Iraq.

All these accomplishments were completed in a very partisan atmosphere in which opposition and obstruction was the prevailing strategy for conservative Republicans.

Well done Mr. President!

Good question and point, thaws for bringing it up.

What else would one expect from this begrudging anarchist? Shun Hannity the unrepentant bigot show is the place for the bow tie wearing Phucker Carlson to vent (foment). Tucker is an antagonistic, amoral, chronic white male loser. At least Vick’s job is to entrtain. Tucker’s isn’t?

What about the half wit/half governor polar thighs, Sarah Palin, shooting wolves from helicopters or republicans voting against legislation for more humane treatment of livestock?

What should Tucker’s punishment be for sending out fake incendiary emails to the Philadelphia news site, Phawker, in addition to his incendiary suggestion about Micheal Vick? The e-mails were sent from keith@keitholbermann.com. That's an address that is not owned by Olbermann, but by Carlson.

Time to review. The 111th Congress spent more money than any other Congress, ever. In fact, the 111th created more debt than the first 100 Congresses combined. Another fact, it outspent the 110th Congress under Bush by $1.2 trillion dollars. The 111th Congress rang up $3.2 trillion in new debt.

That in itself is quite an accomplishment, seeing we still have 10% unemployment 25% under-employment, private sector jobs being lost every day while the federal/state governments expand at a alarming rate.

That is the legacy of the 111th Congress. Debt that will need to be paid by children not even born yet.

Thanks Democrats/Liberals. As you always tell us, it's (the debt) for the children.

Well done Mr. President, Ms. Pelosi, and Mr. Reid! We will not forget!!

Hey Ron,

the 111th Congress passed more laws

Yea, General Sherman accomplished a lot in that little scorched Earth march through the South too!

Congress passed the largest economic stimulus bill in American History.

What did Obama did say? Something like that if we pass Stimulus, unemployment won't go above 8%, that if we don't pass it, it would go to 9%? So we pass it , and it jumps to 9.6%+ for how long. We give Obama a trillion and unemployment exceeds his WORST CASE SENARIO OF WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF WE SPENT NOTHING! Better check that credibility thing you are always worrying about Ron.

Congress passed into law HEALTHCARE REFORM giving 32 million Americans access to healthcare.

What did Obama say about HCR? That it would bend the "cost curve"? Now he laughs about it saying you can't add 30 million people and it not cost anything. Didn't Obama say no one would lose their coverage and today hundreds of companies/ organizations from McDonalds to the American Federation of Teachers are applying for waivers so they don't have to drop their employees/members. Better check that credibility stuff, Ron.

Obamacare is a monument of Obama/Democrat contempt for the majority will of the citizens of this country. Yea, well done Mr. President.

Congress passed approved the Bush tax cut for another two years.

What did Obama say about those Bush tax cuts for years, "Bush's failed economic policies" that almost caused a "major economic depression", the ones that "drove the car into the ditch", the ones that we had to spend a trillion to undo? Then Obama endorses them and says they will help recovery! Better check that credibility stuff, Ron.

The Senate ratified the START nuclear treaty with Russia.

Funny you should mention that. Your boy you hid behind yesterday never got back on the clarification did he? Anyway, if you want the name of the 24 ships, I have them. I know how much credibility means to you.

BTW- If I'm not availabile to help you with your credibility stuff, please feel free to check with NoJo, or JoAnna. They're way ahead of you guys and won't mind, actually they do it everyday.

My, My. My.......things CERTAINLY are looking BLEAK for the TeaBag Party right now. (So much for their failed attempts to "reform" the political landscape.) They managed to mostly LOSE their elections (as in the case of O'Donnell in Delaware and Miller in Alaska,) AND they managed to irritate and alienate both the Republican party AND the vast majority of Americans. (But at least we've got Rand Paul to laugh at for comic relief.....)

He did NOT say, however, that when gas was $4.00 and up, Bush was also printing money. Which of course, he was not. Where do the "LIBERAL MEDIA" radio stations get these dorks??

Geez-is. Screwballs everywhere these days, and all becaus they can't stand it that after 2 years, the country hasn't completely crashed or been taken over by Muslims or some damned thing.

Then, THEN- up pops this O'Donnell dingbat again, saying they are out to get her. Guess what, Christine- they DON'T FREAKING CARE anymore. You are NOT still running against anyone for Senate. What are you, dumber than two pieces of lint??

I can't stand Fox either; but I catch it to get the lie of the day.

The Top cuck coo on Fox is Glenn Beck. Billdo is a bloviator, bully, and liar. Those gays on at night are sick. Since her education did nothing to increase her knowledge and intellect, Sarah Palin is jealous and hates the Obama’s because they are classy and educated. The monkey girls in the morning are clueless and only can keep their jobs by showing their tails and bleaching their hair blond. The men are just as clueless and idiotic too. It's as if they are all controlled by robots; especially Deuce.

Ron, well done. Always good to remind everyone including the Bobs of FR exactly how much Congress and President Obama accomplished in only two years. I find the FR Bobs amusing, they get ticked off and then smart off with remarks about General Sherman, etc.,when reminded that President Obama has done a terrific job despite the GOP efforts to obstruct, deny and defeat--the Bobs just cannot stand the idea Obama outsmarted, outwitted, outmanuevered the best laid plans of the GOP not once but repeatedly.

As for Ms O'Donnell--allegations have been made against her. The DOJ must investigate those allegations. Whether they determine they have a case or not is irrelevant, she has been exposed as a nice person but a few bricks; a perpetual liar who has made so many absurd and often false statements, she no longer knows truth.

Jody,

Always good to remind everyone including the Bobs of FR exactly how much Congress and President Obama accomplished in only two years.

People really don't need reminding what Obama and the 111th did. We see the consequences everyday in the news, the state of the economy, unemployment, debt, etc. You guys don't need reminding either. Ron and others chant the mantra with their eyes closed, with no reality based sense of perspective, believing simply what they emotionally feel and want to believe. Hope that didn't sound to liberal, telling people how they feel and think - just an observation.

Speaking of reminding, let me remind you, that Ron, or no one else has refuted anything I said. Ron will say that he doesn't engage with people who have no credibility, but the reality is - he can't refute it, just a cop-out.

I find the FR Bobs amusing, they get ticked off and then smart off with remarks about General Sherman, etc.,

Actually, Sherman's burning of Atlanta is pretty much similar to what Obama has done to representative government. Today's edition? When he couldn't pass cap and trade, (because the people of America don't want it) what did he say -"There's more than one to skin the cat"

Two days before Christmas, the EPA said they were taking the permitting authority over refineries, power plants and cement facilities in Texas away from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as of Jan. 2, 2011.

Hugo Chavez would be proud. Sherman probably wouldn't, he obeyed his boss. Obama doesn't - he ignores the will of the people. Glad you are amused though.

when reminded that President Obama has done a terrific job despite the GOP efforts to obstruct, deny and defeat--the Bobs just cannot stand the idea Obama outsmarted, outwitted, outmanuevered the best laid plans of the GOP not once but repeatedly.

Obama has out-manuervered the GOP. He and Pelosi and Reid have also out-manuevered the Constitution and representative government.

It's that second sentence that bothers me and a lot of Americans, not so much the first. Shame it doesn't bother you, Ron and other progressives.

Anyway, it was nice of you to take up for Ron and try to defend his comments.

I have to admit it...I did kind of miss her after November. She really does make me feel better about my ability to process and relay information.

The Democrats dream of the day all of their opponents are as dumb as she is and the Republicans would appreciate it if she and her mouth would find obscurity. I think the only ones that are plotting against her are satan worshippers and the rat-human hybrids...They didn't much like the spotlight she cast on them.

Where is your credibility check Bob? The EPA is regulating greenhouse gases because it was required to by the 2007 Supreme Court decision Commonwealth of Massachusetts et al. v. Environmental Protection Agency. Did you already know that and decide to leave it out of your post or are you just talking about things that you don't understand?

I'm sure that you support our constitutionally defined system of checks and balances... or would you rather that the executive branch blatantly disregard a ruling by the Supreme Court? That sounds much more Hugo Chavez than the conspiracy theory that you so breathlessly describe.

Speaking of intellectual inconsistency, how does the Republican's unprecedented use of the filibuster advance the cause of representative democracy? Do those political manuevers bother you as much as president Obama's (probably excessive) use of regulatory authority?

I'm no big fan of Obama and I consider myself an independent voter but I don't like being talked down to like only conservatives know what's best for the country or have some moral superiority.

bjones,

Yea, I know about the assinine ruling based bull sh!t data. Green house gasses are pollutants. Do you even know that 94% of green house gases are water vapor, the essential element of life on the planet. 4%+ are co2. How does that plant life stuff do without co2. How do the animals (including Democrats) do without plant life? Want to cut back on co2 - quit breathing. What is is the anthropogenic co2? 1.8% of the 4%. Punch that number up on your calculator (if it has enough decimal points).

It is not a matter of defying the Supremes, it is a matter of abusing power. Bottom line- Americans don't want cap and trade, Obama will use an unelected bureaucracy to advance his agenda. That's not representative government. Geez.

The filibuster is a limited protection of the minority. Funny, but it ended up protecting the majority will of the American people. Kinda validated with the last election, huh.

I was addressing my comments to Ron and progressives. If you feel offended, my hunch would be that you're probably not the independent you think you are. But, I won't tell you who, or what you are, leave that for progressives. They are the experts on that and what is best for everybody.

Yea, I'm conservative and have an opinion. And this is a political blog. No moral superiority, just an opinion.

I guess that constitutionality counts only when it involves issues you agree with. Is that your position? The Supreme Court ruling shouldn't count because you don't believe in global warming and the filibuster is not an impediment to representative democracy because it was mostly used to block an agenda that you are opposed to. I think that pretty much recaps your argument and I must say that I'm not impressed...

I was mostly pleased with the results of the last election, as an independent I think balance is important and compromise will achieve the best results. That doesn't mean that the Republicans should decide everything. Republicans now control 1 out of 3 branches of legislative government.

That is not a mandate for one party rule or mean that the Democrats don't matter anymore. Maybe you will say that even though Republicans only control the house of reps the election was still a rejection of the current policies by Obama and the Democrats and I would agree with you on that.

But it doesn't change the fact that Obama and the current Democratic caucus were fairly elected by their constituents and, whether you personally like it or not, they are entitled to serve their full term in office and exercise the power of their office throughout their term. It seems to me like the only opinion that you want to see represented by govt. is your own and that's no democracy at all.

In the executive branch that power includes appointing people to run the administration of regulatory agencies like the EPA. I think that you refered to them as the "unelected beauracracy". Are you really proposing that we should hold a direct election for every federal employee in every government agency?

You are entitled to your opinion, including the opinion that I am not an independent voter. In some ways you are probably right, I tend to vote for more democrats now then I used to. I always disagree with some of the issues by both sides but at least you have some idea what you are getting with the democrats.

The same double-standards and circular logic that you are using in your post is much too prevalent in the Republican party for my tastes. I'd be happy to tell you what it would take for the Republicans to get me back in their corner but I don't think anyone cares and my post is already too long...

My question is how you can be so strongly in favor of constitutional process and the principles of representative govt. on some issues and then say exactly the opposite thing on another issue?

I guess that constitutionality counts only when it involves issues you agree with. Is that your position?

Where did you get that? A little projecting?

Actually, I have argued here many times, that I don't like the way Snowe votes a lot of the time. She does seem to represent her liberal constitutuency, and as long as she does that, I'm cool with it. I may not like the result, but I respect her voicing the will of her constituents. That's what she should do, not follow lock-step with Republicans.

The Supreme Court ruling shouldn't count because you don't believe in global warming and the filibuster is not an impediment to representative democracy because it was mostly used to block an agenda that you are opposed to. I think that pretty much recaps your argument and I must say that I'm not impressed...

How do get that from:

It is not a matter of defying the Supremes, it is a matter of abusing power. Bottom line- Americans don't want cap and trade, Obama will use an unelected bureaucracy to advance his agenda.

Didn't say the Supreme Court ruling shouldn't count. But, did the Supreme court mandate the EPA to take over the state of Texas permitting? A letter two days before Christmas, when no one is paying attention, saying they were taking over in a week? To implement Obama's agenda? Obama admitted he was going to circumvent the legislative process by "There's more than one way to skin the cat." This is one example.

I said the filibuster was a limited protection for the minority. Where did you get the other part. Works for the Democrats when they are in the minority. Why are you making stuff up?

You're right, the past election was no mandate. They don't like the Republicans, they rejected Obama's Pelosi and Reids form of governing, mostly because so such was against the will of the people. The people wanted jobs, Obama focused on HCR. OK. They wanted HCR, but not what was crammed through. On and on.

The same double-standards and circular logic that you are using in your post is much too prevalent in the Republican party for my tastes

Nothing circular to what I'm saying. Straight forward. Your the one trying to make it circular, that, or your reading comprehension is definitely a deficit for you.

My question is how you can be so strongly in favor of constitutional process and the principles of representative govt. on some issues and then say exactly the opposite thing on another issue?

Why don't you:

1. stay with what I actually say, instead of projecting your liberal interpretation of what I'm not saying

2. take a quote and ask a question.

Is that too circular for ya?

yadda, yadda, yadda, sure it isn't the FR liberals who are so prevalent???

ron in indiana, are you aware that as reported on Bloomberg TV today that the present financial reform act is expected (or required) to create 122 new committees and subcommittees all of which will have no funding allocated to fund the personnel, office space and equipment required to support the new commitees.

All these commitees that can be used by lobbyists to promote their own agendas. and an increase in an already bloated, overpaid and ineffectual federal bureacratic workforce (lol).

Rather makes me wonder how well the HCR and other health care act has been funded as well? If the programs were so good and so well read up on by those approving passage, why didn't they include funding provisions?

You indepenent? At least I'm honest and upfront about being a conservative.

(BTW - The sanctimony is kinda a give away.)

It's probably a lost cause but I won't let someone to make a series of blatantly illogical and self-serving statements as if they were indisputable fact... silence is acceptance. Bob's entitled to his opinion but better be prepared to defend it...

Did I mention sanctimony?

Anyway, take anything (one thing) I said that is blatantly illogical, line it out (like I'm doing here) and tell me your what your problem is (other than being a sanctimonious liberal). Same with the layers of deception and doulble talk crap. Line it out.

No more liberal origami and taking what I said, folding it and shaping it to look like what you want it to look like. Line it out bj. You owe it to the masses, they need your wisdom and rectitude. I'll be gone for awhile, but I will reply by the morning.

Look forward to your comments.

bob-1805084 as a conservatibe, how do you feel about GWB's not so truth telling record? Here are only a few examples:

Bush lied when said:

"In terms of the economy, look, I inherited a recession, I am ending on a recession." --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Jan. 12, 2009

Let’s not forget the famous WMD he so adamently bragged about to start a war.

Bush’s famous “Mission Accomplished” – accomplished what? Bankrupting the country?

While the financial meltdown was happening in 2008, Mr. Bush looked in the camera and said he didn’t think that things were bad at all.

Bush: said he favored "equal" rights for gays and lesbians, but not "special" rights - Fact: Bush really supported a Texas law that allowed the state to take adopted children from gay and lesbian couples to place the kids with straight couples.

“We are working with European allies to make clear to the Iranian regime that it must give up its uranium enrichment program and any plutonium reprocessing.” - despite the European Union’s urgings, the Bush administration steered clear of these discussions altogether.

“We are working closely with governments in Asia to convince North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions.” Again, this is false. The six-party talks involving the United States, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea are in suspension. Bush has rejected diplomacy in this instance, saying it would “reward bad behavior.”

“There are still regimes seeking weapons of mass destruction - but no longer without attention and without consequence.” - Bush ignoring both Iran and North Korea?

Bush: bragged that in Texas he was signing up children for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) as "fast as any other state."- but as governor he fought to unsuccessfully to limit access to the program.

But I guess it's ok that he is a liar and a hypocrite because: "I've been in the Bible every day since I've been the president." --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Nov. 12, 2008

From today's NY Times:

Sources close to soon to be Speaker John Boehner have confirmed that he intends to introduce new House rules that have Democrat's grumbling he is targeting his predecessor, Nancy Pelosi. The sources who spoke only on condition of anonymity say Mr. Boehner will include in his proposed House rules, to be voted on when the new Congress convenes next month, a prohibition on members flying their brooms in the House chamber and in all House office space other than the members own office. The proposed new rules will specify that any broom-flying members must enter and exit their offices using their own office windows. Sources say this is a direct result of Ms. Pelosi using her broom to swoop in and terrorize Democrats she didn't like, such as the conservative leaning "Blue Dogs".

Ms. Pelosi's spokesperson declined to comment on the issue. However, it has been rumored that in a meeting with her senior staff of flying monkeys she stated "Tell him I said 'I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!!"

Proposed penalties for violation of this rule include the offending member being summoned to the well of the House with her broom which will be set on fire by the House Sergeant-at-Arms. A second offense will be punishable by the offending member being sprinkled with water until she screams " STOP, STOP, I'M MELTING!!" A third offense will result in the entire House membership assembling in session on the steps of the Capitol where the Speaker will press a button to drop a Kansas farmhouse from a construction crane on the offending member.

Only in Washington, DC!!!

So We Won’t Forget:

Thanks for bringing some very appropriate serious talk to the discussion. We can not forget. Nor should we dwell on what we didn't get. We have gotten a lot since FDR. President Johnson got the Civil Rights bill and came back years later and got voting rights.

When we forget we give the GOP/TP AN OPPORTUNITY to be very liberal in their conflated talking points to use as a tool. Let's remember the times.

Ron are you okay? I read a magnitude 4.2 earthquake has rattled portions of central Indiana.

To excuse what I am going to say here is what happened:

I was looking for a quote, stumbled on a Fox News blog, and read something I just needed to comment on. But I had to sign up. Here is the best part. I could not use a user name containing words like fauxnews, foxnewssucks, foxnewsblows, etc etc. Of, course the nice folks at Fox did not tell me I could not use those words but mysteriously they were all used. Well, you say, there are many people who hate Fox so it's possible. I though that, too so I tried every number combination possible and they were still ALL used. But I could use bayllie with no numbers.

Doesn't Faux News pride itself of freedom and lack of intervention? Well apparently they control what your screen name is going to be. I was able to post my anti anti-Obama rebuttal. I wonder how long it's going to take before they find something "offensive" in my post and take it down. Any bets?

Happy New Year's everyone

I agree, cuckoo. You just have to laugh at, and to some extent feel sorry for, O'Donnell, she's like Palin--they never look in the mirror to see what caused them to lose or why they are in trouble. It is always someone else who caused it, the "establishment", the media, Katie Couric, VP Biden did it--they never accept responsibility for anything that happens. No, it was them and their obvious uninformed and incurious selves. When someone claims to return to the original Constitution (strict constructionists) and want to return to following it, they darned well better know what is in it.

Interesting JoAnna that you say we don't mention the amounts. First, we do mention money in the post just before this: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/12/29/5733220-feds-probing-odonnells-use-of-campaign-funds

Second, the amounts actually aren't very important to whether campaign-finance law was broken. I have said on air that the standard for criminal prosecution on a case like this is very high. But what's more likely is the potential for FEC fines. Plenty of campaigns have faced fines, including Democratic ones, like, for example, America Coming Together. It was hit with a $775,000 fine, the largest in FEC history, in Aug. 2007, which I reported on: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2007/08/29/4435240-fec-hits-group-with-hefty-fine

As always thanks for reading and expressing your views.

Why aren't you all complaining about Bloomberg & the lack of Blizzard cleanup. Because watching CBS this morning I noticed that all the roads that were suppose to be cleaned at least once by 7 am this morning, weren't.

Not a fan of O'Donnell, but I would think that as news people that you should cover all the headlines, not the minor ones. Where is your disgust with Bloomberg--he has done a worse job with the blizzard than Christie, and yet you were able to complain about him.

And they say there is objective views in the media. Only if you are against someone.

Are you calling for the same prosecution of Barbara Boxer? Who forgot that she owned a home, that her son lived in? Should the IRS be going after her?

What would happen to a regular citizen if they had done these things?

But you are correct--if they find anything wrong with her campaign they should throw the book at her, as long as they do it for those who already have been elected and are elected!

Jeff - you would have seen what they had then, she paid her rent, eat out, paid utilities, she even paid her mother as a campaign aid, at the same time she owned former workers back pay.

O'Donnell used her home as her campaign office. She is allowed to pay for that office space using her campaign donations. Same with the utilities. Paying actors in campaign ads, whether family or otherwise, is the norm for any campaign.

So what is it with the rabid hatred of conservative women by the Left? Palin, O'Donnell, Angle, Fiorina, Haley, the list doesn't end. Petty personal attacks on these women, and for what reason?

I'm not "calling" for any investigation. I'm reporting on them. Further, we covered the Rangel investigations a ton. Anyone who reads First Read knows we are non-partisan in our anaylses and down the middle in our reporting. Just because you have an agenda doesn't mean we have one.

I'm pretty idealistic about my profession -- to make the complicated understandable for people who have 9-5 jobs outside of DC and don't follow politics 24/7. With partisans on blogs, it makes what we do even more important. As I've said before, I'll stand by anything I've said on air or published. But come on, non-partisan? Like it or not you all are on MSNBC. Are you asserting that Ed Schultz, Chris Matthews, and Keith O are equally non-partisan? That was a non-partisan tingle down Matthews' leg, and all that crying by all of them on election night had nothing to do with their agenda?

Does MSNbC engage in "down the middle reporting."

Come now, we all know Chuck T. was a member of Jurno-list. Or was that also down the "middle."

So, have you sent those flowers to O'Donnell yet, or are you sticking with that is the "most important story" out there and requires back to back articles? Come on, I for one am ready to discuss the WAPO ROTC editorial. Seems like it will be loads of fun with this crowd.

Um, Spanky, we welcome lots of different points of view, but get your facts straight. Chuck Todd was not a member of Journo-list. Think with a bit more nuance than painting the media with a broad brush, even within networks.

The Peacock is a big network and we have lots of different kinds of people who work here. I didn't say all of MSNBC was non-partisan. There are plenty of people on cable shows with their own perspective. But I'd ask that you separate the rest of us out from that. I work for the NBC News Political Unit, and we serve the broad array of NBC News, from cable to Nightly News, to the Today show to dot com. By the way, you probably don't even realize but msnbc.com is only tangentially related to MSNBC cable. They report to different bosses and are based in Redmond, WA, because Microsoft Corp. owns a considerable share of them.

I know it can all be tough to separate out, but we -- Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and myself -- can only defend or represent our own work. And luckily for us, we do have a blog, where there's a written record of everything we have penned. Good show Domenico! I have been reading FR for over three years and sometimes participate - difficult to do when you actually have a 9-5 job.

I always thought FR was pretty bi-partisan but not the posters!

Hope everyone has a great New Year!!

Domenico;

First let me thank you for your work and giving us a forum to express our ideas. I wish you and your family a very happy New Year and continued success. Same goes for the rest of the MSNBC crew and those that visit this site.

I have read your posts above and I agree with them. We are all responsible for what we write and only what we write. There are no rights or wrongs when expressing opinions, they are just how we feel and everybody has a right to their feelings/opinions. When I post I try to make sure I also enclose a link or an acknowledged excerpt from articles that lead me to my opinion and post in the ope that you will also read the article and offer meaningful discourse. From many that visit here we get name calling, mis -information and sometimes just outright lies to promote their agenda.

To put it in simple terms, you are entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to creating facts, distorting facts, or just promoting mis-information that you know to be false. If you do not like the open format of this post where all people can speak their piece then move on to another site that may be more suitable to you. The people who monitor this board and publish articles take great pains in their accuracy. If there is a mistake, they are often the first to correct it. FOX News, Rush, Glenn Beck and the others should try it. The MSNBC crew often offer us articles many times on the same or similar points and I suggest you read them all to get a proper context of the material.

Again, I wish to thank the people at MSNBC who make this board possible.

Happy New Year to everybody.

Joanne, just to clarify a point you made about using a home as a campaign office. If it is anything like allowing a home office to be deductable per IRS rules that space must be exclusively used as a place of business and not shared with the family.

Please do keep up with your posts, even a liberal needs to given an opportunity to get information from other sources than FR, progressive dreams or fox news. they have clearly shown us conservatives what becomes of an individual who hides within the confines of narrowmindedness.

domenico - Sorry that you wrote the headline "witch hunt or the witching hour" and then wrote the following...

You should be glad we exist rather than trying to find a partisan bent, because you're wasting your time.

Hardly a headline that would provoke any type of thoughtfull discussion. I rather consider FR to be more of a liberal sanctuary (partisan even), I suppose that FR does have a few centrist writers to act as the "token" conservative.. To bad FR doesn't see fit to employ moderators to ensure thoughtfull discussion from different viewpoints.

Nice try Mr. DM:

To extoll MSNBC or FR as anything other than pure left "leaning forward" partisan is comedy. The minimization in your comments tells the story. You should be proud as a liberal news organization. There is a fine history of liberal leaning news organizations and many have done a great service for the public over the years.

Come to FR to read the latest left wing or at least left of center slant on the political news. Go to other sites if you want the opposing view. Don't expect to get it here. And do not expect civil discourse from most of the posters. The left outnumbers the right quite a bit and it often gets nasty. Yet entertaining enough to come back and have a look.

american, I'm certain that the $1 million dollar federal investigation into O'Donnell's potential misuse of $1700 of her $7.3 million dollars of campaign funds will resolve how her house was used. And of course if Ms. O'Donnell violated the law, I'm convinced a $775,000 fine, as Domenico so proudly referred to, will be forthcoming because paying $19 to a bowling alley certainly rates as a high crime. The country will be so much safer once that investigation toils to it's end. I'm sure the endless stories the federal governments prosecution against Ms. O'Donnell's will be well documented on this very blog.

One wonders what would have happened if a similar investigation was done while the trillion dollar ObamaCare was being bought off, ehh, negotiated behind closed doors. I guess stealing from the People is okay, just as long as you do it under the Capital dome.

american

what do you find so offensive in the title? Does the word "witch" only apply to O'Donnell?

witching hour - The term may refer to any late hour, even without having the associated superstitious beliefs, as can be seen in the Webster's definition: "The middle of the night, especially midnight." It can also mean other things.

witch hunt - The term "witch-hunt" since the 1930s has also been in use as a metaphor to refer to moral panics in general (frantic persecution of perceived enemies). So is the author questioning the fairness of O'Donnell's prosecution?

Either way, a good writer catches the reader's attention. Obviously he got yours.

Using your logic, it is not worth catching the small-time drug dealers that only sell a small amount of drugs. The cost of investigation, prosecution and then incarceration definitely outweighs the cost of the crime.

You don't think that if there was anything done inappropriately with the "Obamacare" there would be 15 Ken Starrs already lined up to investigate? Clinton got a bj and how much money was spent on that witch hunt (oops sorry for the phrase, american). Were you calculating the money spent back then?

A side note and a somewhat melancholy one - just took a break and saw that the movers were over across the hall starting to empty out Joe Sestak's office. We'll miss having them in the building, as they were the only other people here who worked longer hours than we do, and it was often very comforting to know that I wasn't alone in the building at 10:00pm or on a Sunday afternoon. Apparently Pat Meehan is locating his constituency office elsewhere in the county. I wish him luck - he has some really big shoes to fill. To Admiral Joe and all of his staff, thanks for being the hardest-working, most dedicated representation that PA-7 has ever had, and much luck in all your future endeavors. You'll be missed.

Saw the clip of GOPer Tucker Carlson saying Vick should have been executed. Tucker's true self shining through. This episode of right-wing criticism and drama is further proof--it doesn't matter what is said or how reasonable the thought from President Obama, the right opposes it. Wonder if Tucker thought Scooter Libby should have been executed. Hear much right-wing criticism of Pres Bush for commuting his sentence even before he served one day--Libby helped "out" a CIA agent putting many lives in danger but hey, Libby was a good and loyal public servant--he was a republican.

Vick is a tough subject. I am a dog lover and my son has two pit bulls that are the sweetest dogs I have ever met. I can not be as lenient as Obama nor ruthless like Carlson. But I will never root for Vick no matter what team he is playing on - even the 49ers. You just don't change your attitude that quickly and if Vick had never been caught he would still be killing his dogs. It takes a very sick mind to do that.

      Patrick,

I can see that happening, but do you think it is because the Democrats wanted it or because the American people have spent the past 2 years complaining about government spending? Probably a bit of both, but the people are watching, and a majority are tired of the government telling them what they can and can't do. Showing the shift in policy by our President to work with more conservative minded people than pushing his nanny state agenda.

Obama is/was nothing but a rubber-stamp who was never serious about limiting or eliminating any earmarks. Congress stole from the taxpayers in the open, and for all to see, basically because they have no shame.

I think someone like Ron Paul is a conservative who is frugal and conscientious in real life, but the O'Donnells and Palins of the party are simply opportunists who are looking to exploit the political system for their own material gain. And why wouldn't they? Limbaugh, O'Reilly and FOX have been ringing that register for years.

Our newly elected governor in Maine, Mr. "I'll tell Obama to go to hell," Paul LePage, just appointed his 22 year old daughter to a position in his administration, and sees nothing wrong with it. I honestly don't think these conservatives are smart enough to recognize the hypocrisy of putting relatives on the payroll while vowing to shrink the government.

      Amy,

Is there a law in Maine that says that you cannot hire or appoint family members to positions? If there is, then if I were you, I would file a complaint and lawsuit against him. If not, then accept that he thinks that person is the best person for the job. Besides, she might be able to do the work of 4 liberal deadbeats looking for that government handout.

Before complaining, why don't you wait and see if Maine's government shrinks over the next 4 years instead of blaming someone for something that hasn't happened yet.

As for O'Donnell, she is a nut case, but then again the democrats have plenty of them on their side also. Charles Rangel, Barbara Boxer, & John Kerry, just to name a few.

There is no law that says the Maine governor can't appoint a family member to his staff. And that is what the Maine governor did, appointing his daughter to an entry level position in his administration.

A loyal public servant, who lied about his military career, never met a tax he didn't like, unless of course it effected him. No wonder he tried to hide his yacht in Rhode Island to avoid paying more taxes on it. Yeah, I call him loyal, to himself, anything that benefits himself.

Loyalty in Kerry--isn't this the man that divorced his first wife--married money later? But isn't that what we are suppose to do, marry for love the first time, marry for money after that:)

I guess that Grayson cat from Florida isn't a nut job either. I will agree Wakeup--there are plenty of nutcases on both sides of the aisle. Too bad we can't give them all a psych exam before being allowed to take office.

"There is no law that says the Maine governor can't appoint a family member to his staff."

Let me explain this to you slowly. Paul LePage and his Tea Party supporters disparaged government run health care during the campaign, and those who "become dependent on the government" but the governor puts his own daughter on the state payroll where she receives government run health insurance and draws a higher salary than if she tried to make it in the private sector. The private sector, remember that? That's where "real Americans," conservatives tell us, compete for jobs, create their own businesses and pursue the American dream. What's the governor's 22 year old daughter doing on a state government payroll? It's called hypocrisy.

      Amy,

So in other words, it is wrong to hire family members within your business. I guess Ford should have never had his kids work for him. Has LePage taken office yet?

After his term, if he has not shrunk the government of Maine--call me--I will stand beside you and complain about it, I will even call him a liar.

If it is against the law in Maine, I will help you get a lawsuit filed against him.

It is only hypocrisy if no one has done it in the past, and he somewhere said during his campaign that he would not hire family members to be part of his staff. Did he do that--because if he--I will stand beside you and yell "liar" again.

But until he proves that he has not shrunk the government of Maine, and that her entry level position will cost him and his re-election bid then you should wait for the results.

Besides, many of us have gotten jobs because of who we knew, not what we knew.

An old rich man once told me "It's not how you get in the door, it is what you do once you get in". So we'll have to let time decide whether or not LePage will have a problem with anyone but the liberal left.

Kerry is the one who's wife divorced him to marry another man. He's also the one who put his life on the line to save another sailor. He's the one who actually served in Vietnam, at a time when other young men were dodging the draft or hiding out in the reserves, like Dick Cheney or George Bush. Nepotism, alive and doing well with the Republican/TP Inc. party. Interesting how the Republican/TP Inc. party supporters on this blog are defending this governor but let a Democratic governor do the same thing and they would be all full of rage and indignation. They would call for investigations and recall votes.

Is nepotism illegal? Not necessarily, it really depends on the position, the laws and how the hiring was conducted.

Is hiring someone because they are your family member to a public position without first advertising that position, taking applications and conducting interviews illegal? Quite possibly, yes. Especially if no consideration of the skills and experience of the family member were evaluated and found to meet the requirements of the job.

Can the government, under certain conditions, offer a public position to a person without first going through the second question's implied steps? Yes but there must first be a compelling reason and the person must have skills that uniquely qualify them for that position. Also, in the case of an executive position, the executive should be given some leeway in their hiring of their staff as long as the person being hired to that position has the requisite skills and experience necessary to perform that job.

Not knowing the skills or qualifications of the Governors daughter, not knowing the laws of Maine and not being a labor lawyer, I can not say if this hiring is legal or illegal. All I can say is that it does not look good to me.

Anyone who is not a lawyer and studied the laws of Maine, who does not know the daughter's qualifications for the position but are posting and saying they know it is or isn't illegal for the Governor to hire his daughter or she is or isn't qualified is just posting to present a partisan attack on the other side. In other words, sound and fury that signifies nothing.

I realize I'm on a bit of a rant, and my own co-worker, who is not a LePage supporter, doesn't think its a big deal the governor appointed his 22 year old daughter to a position in the state government, despite his Libertarian views regarding government jobs, but some of us are more sensitive to political rhetoric than others. I don't think JFK appointing his brother as attorney general is quite the same thing as getting a job for your daughter as an entry level aide in your administration during a very tough economy for young people. JFK wasn't acting against his own principles, the way I believe our Tea Party governor is doing by giving a government job to his offspring.

Well now, isn't that interesting? So according to Liberal Logic it's okay to appoint relatives to government jobs if they support the expanision of the government, support government run health insurance, and are for more and more government entitlements.

        Dear Mr. Ron Indiana,

When a majority tells a minority that they will have no voice the only avenue left to the minority is one of, as you called it, 'obstructionism'. Rosa Parks was an obstructionist. Martin Luther King was an obstructionist. Any minority of any kind that is not given a voice will become an 'obstructionist' because that is all that is left to them.

Pelosi arrogantly told the Republican minority in the House that they would have no say in any legislation. In effect, telling a very large portion of the nation that they do not have a voice and they do not matter. That being the truth, what is left?

The guilty party here is not the Republicans, rather the Democrats, who, in their arrogance, took away the voice of millions of Americans.

The party of Chenny, Rumsfeld, Delay and the list of creeps goes on.

        Jack:

Thank you for your comment. I think we can agree to disagree.

I'm more inclined to agree with Beverly.

        Jack,

Don't forget that they were obstructing things they had previously fully supported. They even blocked bills they had co-written. Remember the health care summit? First they wanted it then when the President said it was a good idea, they were against it. Filibustering because you do not think your side is being given a fair hearing is not what the Republican/TP Inc. party was doing, Jack. It was, in their own words, to ". . . make this President Obama's Waterloo.", to ". . . ensure this President only has one term.", to ". . . ensure this president fails.", etc. There was nothing honorable about what the Republican/TP Inc. party was doing and no amount of twisting or attempted blame changing will change that fact.

Pelosi arrogantly told the Republican minority in the House that they would have no say in any legislation

The Democrats did offer the Republicans a part in crafting the legislation. The Republicans decided they would rather vote "no" and obstruct. At which point the Democrats carried on without them. See Ron's comment at the beginning of all of this...

This constitutional certification process for legislation is an irrelevant political ploy that is jut going to waste time. What the Tea Party want is a debate on the floor on constitutionality of any bill. They forget that the fundemental principals established by the case of Marbury v Madison in the early 1800's is that the courts have the final say in constitutional interpretation and we have thousands of Supreme Court cases dissecting and interpreting almost every clause in the constitution. Most legislation is vetted carefully to find justification under the constitution before being introduced and the scope of constitutional authority, as decided in numerous court decisions is quite expansive. Also all legislative acts are presumed to be constitutional until a court rules that an act is unconstitutional.

What O'Donnell does not get is that the Democratic Party is not trying to end her politcial career, they would like to see her run again against them forever. $7.2 million contributed her what morons.

Hey Tom, Maybe it was Saros and his deep pockets that gave her all that cash. Now that would be a conspiracy! No, her fifteen minutes are just about up!

One would think that, after three bids for office, and three losses, Ms. O'Donnell would get the idea through her head that the voters just do not want her representing them, for anything. I know, Silly Sarah likes her, but, like Silly Sarah, when a comedian or comedienne can use your exact words and make people laugh, it may just be time to consider a new career, say, in the house cleaning or food service industry.

As far as it goes with the unlamented Tucker Carlson, he is, and has been for some time, irrelevant to most Americans. But, if he wants to execute Michael Vick, so be it, just as long as he is willing to execute all the talking heads ( including himself ) who both knowingly and willingly lie to the American public either on TV or the radio. And, lets not forget the failed politican whose biggest claim to fame is that she is a M.I.L.F. (Moron I'd Like to Forget) and not much else. Silly Sarah never met a fact she couldnt ignore outright to prove her point about something that most sane people know is a lie.

hq2/11acr, that would assume that she has a brain that is capable of logical reasoning. So far, I have seen no reason to assume she is capable of logical reasoning. Remember the mice with fully functioning human brains comment?

WOW! Mice with fully functioning human brains! Now I get it, they removed her brain and swapped it with a mouse brain! Suddenly it all makes sense! <end sarcasm>

You have really crossed the line with your irreverence. In no way can you compare two icons of the 60's, Rosa Parks and Dr Mlk Jr, who btw gave his life for freedom, justice, and equality to Tea Baggers.

Tea Baggers are fanatical claptraps(no offense) duped by the Koch brothers, and the Chamber of Commerce who own nearly most of the wealth of the world planet. The injustices people of color were very real. In addition to the billionaires, whom you cant even get close to, are not suffering . They are liars and Con artist. Rosa Parks and Dr Mlk Jr didn't lie about the conditions of the downtrodden.

Yet, you want to emphasize the obstruction the billionaires feed you. You can't even get them to give you a snow plower or a job.

          Plueezee!!!

wakeup - much like the democrats expansion of the federal government and regulatory bodies over the years, right?? How truly gullible you are to think that all of the evils we face have come froim the GOTP. The tea party has been around for what 2 years?

I am more inclined that both political parties over the last 50 years have kicked the can down the street rather than done any meaningfull goal oriented legislation to maintain and promote global US economic leadership.

A politician will only think to their next election, Didn't FR have a headline about obama now looking only to 2012 after the november vote?

          American,

Only 30 years ago our manufacturing base and exports were 3 times what they are today (as a percent of GDP) and our nation was on track to pay off all of our debt from the Great Depression and WWII by the year 2000.

So what happened during the 80’s that sent all those great achievements and goals down the toilet?

It's not the names that are the problem, the totas and Jack. It is that you have labeled the proponents of change as the obstructionists. That's backwards. The establishment that RESISTED change were the obstructionists!

Well, they found their witch. Makes one wonder if you do not and have not had a full time job, how does one pay their bills. Running for office over and over and over again, sounds like a money making job. You run, and the morons who believe your crap send money to get you elected. Money for bills just shows up. If you lose, no problem, just run for something else and start the whole process over again.

To which Larry asked: "Neat, Jim. What did you win, exactly"? Jim said "a three-way with Palin and O'Donnell".

Larry asked, "what was FIRST prize, I wonder"? To which Jum replied "a canned-ham".
