Earlier this morning, the hearing officer -- a Republican -- examining the residency challenges into Rahm Emanuel's bid for Chicago mayor recommended that Emanuel be placed on the ballot.
The hearing officer concluded that Emanuel did not abandon his residency rights when he moved to Washington to be President Obama's chief of staff, and that Illinois law expressly protects the voting and residency rights of those absent "on business of the United States, or of this state."
Today, the three-member Chicago Board of Elections is meeting to consider the challenges to Emanuel's residency eligibility to be Chicago mayor. It's not certain when a vote will be held -- as each of the nearly 30 objectors, Emanuel, or their lawyers has the right to address the board before they vote.
Whatever the outcome, the vote will not be the last word. The decision is virtually certain to be appealed, so the issue will ultimately be decided by the courts.
The board is made up of two Democrats and one Republican. Members are appointed by the Cook County circuit court's chief judge.

Looks like NJNB was WRONG again... go figure! lmao
I'll make a prediction of my own... Rahm WILL be the next mayor of the great city Chicago!
Happy Holidays to all!
Good Morning Feisty:
NJNB is a fraud. She also predicts Mitch Daniels will run for President. In short, she doen't know what she is talking about.
On a much more positive note: I would like to wish Mark, Domenico, and Ali a very Merry Christmas. They have worked hard posting relevant topics for us to discuss. They deserve time to be with their families. Our President is on vacation, Congress is closed. Time for a rest. If it were my call to make, take all next week off as well.
I would like to wish all the regulars who post thoughtful messages (Conservatives and Liberals), a very Merry Christmas.
During the past 2 years the 111th Congress passed more laws affecting more Americans since the "Great Society". Those Congressmen and women who contributed to helping America solve it's many domestic problems deserve a "thank-you" and a wish for a Merry Christmas.
Looks like Barry has had a good couple of weeks. Two questions for the FR lefty liberals:
1. Have you also noticed that one difference from the other 23 months of his Presidency is the virtual non-existence of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid??
2. Could it be that the R’s are clearing the decks of all Barry’s crappola so they can have a clean slate to advance their own agenda in 2011-12?? OUCH!!!!
BTW, with all this legislation passing with R votes, what will the FR lefty liberals have left to whine and complain about in 2011?? That’s a rhetorical question since whining and complaining is what lefty liberals do and I’m sure they will find many things to keep them busy in 2011.
Happy holidays to all FR's, even the Nasty Redhead.
Seasons Greeting to you Feisty
off topic
Did you see that dumb bunny, FDL, Jane Hamster and the mendacious author, Roger Hodge who btw the way is making money criticizing in his book the President by comparing the President to Hoover, on the Last Word? Their bitter lament and righteous aberrant rant is the President doesn't deserve credit for a successful lame duck Congress. She claims it was them who forced the President.
If this witch and her stupid sidekick can only prophisize the doom of the Obama presidency; what the hell could she do better WTF why doesn't run for the job? She should know this is a democracy and it's not all the left. Ther are people on the left, center, and right. The President is the president of all people in America. It's his decision to make the most pragmatic.
Besides that the President said he preserves. A winner, which is what the President is, never quits and a quitter never wins. He won. I know one quitter who thinks they can do the job.
Still voting for yourself huh Joe? lmao
How do you spell P A T H E T I C?
Who was it who predicted the republicans would take back the House in early2009? Who originally maintained they would grab fifty seats, then upped the number to sixty in July?
I believe it was - me!
And, Daniels has said he will make his announcement in the Spring. There is still a good chance he WILL run- and, trust me, he WILL win.
He won re election in 2008 with over 60% of the vote- while Obama barely squeaked past McCain in Indiana. He knows how to cut, balance a budget, and reduce a deficit- in fact, I believe that Indiana now has a surplus. He seems to have a pretty high approval rating among the voters of that state, despite the grumblings of disgruntled liberals.
I am not counting my chickens, but I am doing all I can to help convince him to get rid of Obama and get some fiscal sanity back in this country.
Good Morning Ron & Bev!
It's only a matter of a couple of hours before we find out who made the nice list and who's on the naughty one! ;0)
Wishing you & yours and Wonderful Christmas we have SO many things to be thankful for this past year!
PS: Who wants to point out to Dr. NO all the things she was WRONG about? Don't hurt yourself ho patting yourself on the back... if you ask real nice maybe Joey will lend you a hand!
'Tis the season, but this is still a political board. So I couldn't resist mixing some politics into this old staple:
'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the House
The Democrats were scurrying, as quick as a mouse.
Their stockings were hung in committee rooms with care,
In hopes that Republicans would dare not go there.
Many earmarks were nestled all snug in those beds,
And visions of pork danced in Dem heads.
Then Nancy in her kerchief, and Steny in his cap,
Were just settling down to read bills full of crap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
They sprang from their desks to see what's the matter,
And what to their wondering eyes should appear?
But a shiny new limo, with Republicans in good cheer.
In front was the rock star, the bold one named Sarah,
So they knew in an instant, it was the looming nirvana.
More rapid than eagles her escorts came too,
As they chortled and shouted and made quite an ado.
Now Boehner, now Mitt, now Newt and now Pence,
Paul Ryan came too, though quite thin like a fence.
"To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall,
Slash away, slash away, no pork left at all!"
Sarah spoke not a word, but went straight to her work,
And ripped down those stockings, then turned with a jerk.
With a glare from one eye, a sharp twist of the head,
Poor Nancy did gasp, there was so much to dread.
Then to the limo she jumped, to her team gave a whistle,
And away they all drove like the down in a thistle.
But Nancy could hear, as Sarah rode out of sight
"I'll be back in a different house, to make all things right."
Merry Christmas everyone, see ya next year.
Joe in Albany. Talk about disconnected logic.
#1. Apparently you think legislation magically walks its way toward approval. Now how do you figure Pelosi and Reid were absent--who do you think got their colleagues to vote for the tax compromise, DADT, food safety, START, 9/11 responder HC, and all the other legislation that was passed. Both Pelosi and Reid were front and center, and they deserve the credit Pres Obama gave them for getting these things done. Pelosi kept the House in session and democrats stayed in case 9/11 and anything else was passed by the Senate and needed the House to vote--but Boehner and a number of other republicans were all worn out and went home. How relevant was Mitch McConnell?
#2. Now if the repubs wanted to just advance their agenda in 2011, none of them would have voted for anything. Never occurred to you that some republicans, finally, decided to do what was right rather than obstruct, block, delay, deny, defeat. They needed to show they were willing to "govern" instead of playing political games.
As for your final comment about republicans voting with democrats and our complaining about the 2-year blockade, I'll give the ones who did vote yes credit for doing what is right instead of playing political games with America's future and its people as well as recognizing that voters sent them to Washington to work. If they fail to continue to work, they'll find voters in 2012 deciding they didn't meet their probation time.
Feisty, isn't it funny how NJ forgets her predictions that both Obama and Pelosi would resign?
OK Nancy didn't resign but she lost her job.
I do not believe that I predicted that Pelosi would resign- I did, however, quote an article that showed that all defeated speakers did, in fact, resign, and posited that Pelosi would do the same. That she is too arrogant to see that she has been repudiated by the electorate, cost her party plenty of seats, and should head off into the sunset is not my problem. It is the democrats' problem.
And, just last week Obama threatened that if the democrats did not vote the way he wanted them to, it would be the end of his presidency.
I cannot wait until he pulls the same move on the republicans. Tell me, how many times can he threaten resignation before he has to follow through?
Bill. Enjoyed your poetry even though it's not completely accurate, fun anyway.
Just one little problem, some of the biggest ear mark pork barrel add on were Republican. Millions and millions of dollars in GOP pork from Boehner, to Pence, McConnell and Ryan -- all filled up their stockings but caught lyin'.
"In front was the rock star, the bold one named Sarah,"
Speaking of too much acid....
Almost forgot to pass out my presents to those who made the naughty list...
I got NJNB a lovely new abacus so she can continue to crunch her poll numbers and dazzle us with the results... and also some silver cleaner so she can keep her objects shiny!
Mr. Bill will receive a tasty Nacho-cheese platter complete with chips, salsa and guacamole...
And in Joey's stocking he will find a brand new safety razor in honor of him finally hitting puberty! Decided on the safety razor was the way to go since we don't want him to hurt himself! lol
Now No Joe is trying to take credit for what every talking head from right to left was predicting would happen.
One thing I have learned over many years of following politics, never call the other side down for the count.
Nasty Redhead: you seem to be a totally miserable person, and I do enjoy watching you be miserable.
mis·er·a·ble
–adjective
1. wretchedly unhappy, uneasy, or uncomfortable: miserable victims of war.
2. wretchedly poor; needy.
3. of wretched character or quality; contemptible: a miserable villain.
4. attended with or causing misery: a miserable existence.
5. manifesting misery.
6. worthy of pity; deplorable: a miserable failure.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I find it so sad that, sitting here 2 days before Christmas, all the lefties on this site can do is throw mud at poor no jo.
How is it possible to be a bleeding-heart liberal when you have no heart?
Try showing some Christmas kindness people.
NJNB - your pity party of rookies has arrived... LMAO!
Merry Christmas to you too, Nasty Redhead :-)
To Ron and everyone:
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I'll see you guys in the New Year. However, Domenico will be posting news articles -- when they warrant -- next week. So check back if political news happens.
Hey, Sickofthebickering, what about ol Joey in Albany? And NJ isn't so innocent, either. Not to mention that your little one sided rant isn't exactly showing a whole lot of Christmas spirit. Sotake your unwarranted, sanctimonious and holier than thou attitude and shove it where the sun don't shine.
Everyone else, Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy New Year.
If you couldn't tell, I'm really tired of the righties coming on here and chiding the liberals for using less than diplomatic language or for attacking someone from the right when they are no more innocent than anyone else. I really hate sanctimonious, holier than thou attitudes from hypocrits.
Happy Anniversary, Barry.
01/21/11 will be two years without ANY successful action to close Gitmo. I wonder how he will spin this one to blame it on GWB?? And when is Eric Holder going to get back to the country with his plan to try KSM and his fellow mass murderers??
You’re doin’ a heck of a job, Barry!!!
From Politico:
Plan to close Gitmo 'in shambles'
By: Josh Gerstein
December 22, 2010 11:17 PM EST
Nestled among a string of improbable victories President Barack Obama racked up in the lame-duck Congressional session is legislation containing the most debilitating setback to date to his plan to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay and send many of its detainees to trials in civilian courts in the U.S.
Language contained in the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act passed by the House and Senate on Wednesday bars the use of Pentagon funds to transfer any Guantanamo prisoner to the U.S. for any reason, including a trial. Some supporters of plan Obama announced on his first full day in office to close the prison said the passage of the legislation signals near-complete capitulation by the president. “Obama’s original plan is in shambles,” said David Remes, an attorney for 14 Yemeni detainees at Guantanamo.
Merry Christmas Mark, and everyone here on FR.
Mrry Christmas and the very best for the new year, FR crew. You guys earn it in spades, and we appreciate it.
Feisty- I been bad, too! How about I ask Sants for a nice, christmas-y, decorative tin full of OLD MAIDS?
Joe (and others), are you for closing Gitmo, or would you rather see it remain as is?
I do believe she's on vacation at the moment but you can try! ;0)
Me on the other hand... have been nice & naughty!
A lot of guys like that sort of thing, you know.....
Matthew,
Funny. The below is a summary of the conservative in ( ) and the liberal narrative, less than "diplomatic" narrative in bold. (The exception is Jody and drive-by):
First sentence of the thread - Feisty shot @no joe with obligatory lmao; Ron says good morning to Feisty and first thing said - NJNB is a fraud;(Joe says Barry has had a couple of good weeks...); Beverly goes off topic to rant about about some conservative? witch and her stupid sidekick; Feisty rejoins with a Joe shot and P A T H E T I C?;(no jo defends herself - no shots at anyone); Feisty rejoins with a no joe shot and joe shot; ( Bill posts a poem - no personal shots); Jody is nice and challenges Joe; newday chimes in with nj comment; Jody is nice again - to Bill; drive-by- observer takes exception to poem - nothing wrong there; Feisty chimes in and tries to slam NJNB , Mr. Bill and Joey hitting puberty; Jody is nice again; (Joe takes a shot back Feisty); (SickofBickering says - all lefties throwing mud at no joe be nice); Feisty rejoins to NJNB about pity party; SickofBickering wishes the Nasty Redhead Merry Christmas; then you...
This coming from a guy that is at the same time posting on another page:
Maybe it's just me that finds all this funny.
Actually, after looking at it, you would think that being nasty and dishing shots is prerequisite to being liberal (that would make Jody a conservative and me a LIBERAL).
Anyway Matt, thanks for the laugh.
BTW - In the spirit of Christmas, I have been brutal on you for some time. It actually started with the malicious and intentionally cruel comments you made to someone from (not important) someone who is always polite, respectful and graceful - never deserved it. (Me yea I deserve it) You followed it the next day with another completely unnecessary and spiteful assault on another that does not deserve that level of vile treatment. (Me yea again, I deserve it).
Anyway, if you want to think about it, maybe let up on the ones that don't deserve it ......
the part that comes back around would drop off, (probably be good for your BP judging from the other thread today).
Oh well, thought you might want to know.
Merry Christmas Matt.
Not long before Christmas, 1941, Prime Minister Winston Churchill crossed the Atlantic at personal risk and in great secrecy to meet with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
From a White House Balcony, December 24, both leaders spoke to a crowd of 20,000 who had gathered. The Washington Post reported, "A crescent moon hung overhead. To the southward loomed the Washington Monument as the sun dipped.....behind the Virginia hills." President Roosevelt pressed a button to light the Christmas tree, then spoke to the crowd and by radio to the world. "Our strongest weapon in this war is that conviction of the dignity and brotherhood of man which Christmas Day signifies." After speaking, Prime Minister Churchill also spoke. Both men spoke of the war that had engulfed the world. These words from both men's speeches are appropriate today.
Roosevelt: "It is in the spirit, and with particular thoughtfulness of those, our sons and brothers, who serve in our armed forces on land and sea, near and far--those who serve for us and endure for us--that we light our Christmas candles now across the continent from one coast to the other on this Christmas Eve."
Churchill: ".....here, amid all the tumult, we have tonight the peace of the spirit in each cottage home and in every generous heart. Therefore, we may cast aside for this night at least the cares and dangers which beset us, and make for the children an evening of happiness in a world of storm. Here, then, for one night only, each home throughout the English-speaking world should be a brightly-lighted island of happiness and peace."
Whether or not one celebrates Christmas, may peace and joy be yours on this one night when the spirit of goodness surrounds us. Merry Spirit of the Season to all.
Booby, your 'brutal' comments never touched me. As I said before, F-off you stupid little twit, I'm done with you.
Jody, that was a really great post. I'm very sorry to have posted that last post right after it but Bob decided to chase me here when I had already told him to go away.
To everyone else, my apologies for having had to post that for everyone else to see but Bob will not leave me alone despite being told to leave me alone.
I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
Howdy, people! Merry Christmas, since there isn't a newer topic on FR. Just noticed the link mysteriously disappeared from MSNBC's front page - bizarre, bizarre.
Perhaps 2011 will see us all playing with each other a little more cordially~
Merry Christmas, XD! Here is to a great New Year!
Merry Christmas fellow posters,...
and, regarding njnbnj - even a broken clock is right twice a day,...
Thanks, Matthew, glad you enjoyed my delving into history post.
Anybody doubt he will be found eligible? I sure don't.
Actually, I only hopped on here to wish everybody a Merry Christmas, and Happy, Healthy New Year. May the joy of the season remain with all of us throughout 2011.
Ironic you should mention that since I distinctly remember you being the first one here @ FR spreading your usual BS about him being in-eligible!
Guess you really can teach an old dog new tricks... sometimes..
In the spirit of the holidays... wishing you and the princess a VERY Merry Christmas
Nasty, being legally ineligible and being found "eligible" by the Chicago Dem thugocracy is not at all inconceivable.
It's the Chicago way.
New Jersey out does Chicago and IL combined on questionable political practices. Amusing, were any republicans complaining about the WV GOP candidate, the rich one who lives in FL year round and only came back to run for Senate?
Jody, That would be a big NO! They only cry foul when the results don't suit them.
No doubt. For Conservatives it isn't about consistency or even honesty, it's about creating a salable narrative.
Joe, it was the Republican/TP Inc. officer who recommended he be put on the ballot.
no joe, no bo, nj
Anybody doubt he will be found eligible? I sure don't
No Jo, he will wish he had stayed in washington!!!
Jeff-1541632
no joe, no bo, nj
Anybody doubt he will be found eligible? I sure don't
No Jo, he will wish he had stayed in washington!!!
Happy Holidays Jeff
If I’m not mistaken , you are my suburnan neighbor in Evanston. IL. I would be remiss to not wish you Seasons Greetings. Is Evanston still celebrating First Night on New Year's Eve?
Dr No would not be happy or herself if she didn't repeat her snarky, daily Listmania of utter rightwing fraudulent, essential, lies and distortion.
I think it's a same Rahm got Tea Bagged. Rumor has it the guy who rented the house was upset that Rahm didn't want to break their lease so Rahm and his family could move back in.
So the Tea Baggers got to the lessor; even had him run for mayor as a repub. But, the guy dropped out.
Just goes to show how low the repubs will stoop.
You can bet this will be on 24/7 Fox Noise.
Bev:
It never stops does it? Even the pundits yesterday and this morning will not give President Obama his dues. What he did was no big deal and would have passed anyway I heard one Ex Senator say today. Probably why he is an Ex Senator, NO sense of reality.
I see you're still TEABAGGING.
Just can't get enough.
US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired
Yes
It never stops because that's all they have is petulance and lies. Especially, now that that their leaders like Mitch McCconnell and John Boehner are losing their leadership skills.
So now the question becomes just how ground-breaking will John Boehner and his 63 GOP/Tea Baggers be in getting things done and compromising; or “common ground”; a code word John Boehner prefers to use as opposed to “Hell Naw you can’t”?
Or how stubborn can Mitch McConnell remain? The burden of proof lies on them now. I don't shutting the government and defunding will please any suffering citizen.
Can't we all just feel the holiday spirit oozing from Bev?
Merry Christmas, Bev!

The Yule Log Christmas Fire Plus John Lennon's Christmas Song A YouTube Tradition
Enjoy
http://tinyurl.com/295mht3
Yule log - origins
Yule customs varied greatly from region to region. Odin's sacrificial beer became the specially blessed Christmas ale mentioned in medieval lore, and fresh food and drink were left on tables after Christmas feasts to feed the roaming Yuletide ghosts. Even the bonfires of former ancient times survived in the tradition of the Yule Log, perhaps the most universal of all Christmas symbols.
The ceremonies and beliefs associated with the Yule Log's sacred origins are closely linked to representations of health, fruitfulness and productivity. In England, the Yule was cut and dragged home by oxen or horses as the people walked alongside and sang merry songs. It was often decorated with evergreens and sometimes sprinkled with grain or cider before it was finally set alight.
Really, SickOfTheBickering, I'm looking towards a season filled with joy and optimism.
To everyone at First Read - friends and opponents, regulars and first-time visitors, and of course our awesome hosts -
It's hard to come up with something that hasn't already been said about the holidays, so I'm not going to try; instead, forgive me if I borrow from some much better writers than I. After the past year, I was tempted to start with "We need a little Christmas....right this very minute......candles in the window.....carols at the spinet", but here's a confession - this is one of those classic cases where you mis-hear the lyrics the first time and they get stuck in your head - totally wrong - forever after. For some unknown reason, in my younger days, I used to think they were singing about needing "carols at the Senate" (!) and I can still hear that whenever this song comes on the radio. Though come to think of it, that's not a bad idea, either - come on, Harry and Mitch, I'm talking to you! (and I don't mean the Harry Simeone Chorale and Mitch Miller, either). :)
But in all seriousness, here's my holiday wish for every one of you - hopefully with the lyrics right this time -borrowed from some of my favorites:
And so this is Christmas
And what have we done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun.
Joyful all ye nations rise -
Join the triumph of the skies.
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.
War is over.....if you want it.
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, goodwill to men"
Let heaven and nature sing!
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white.
(Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!)
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
JoAnne PA;
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
JoAnne in PA
To everyone at First Read - friends and opponents, regulars and first-time visitors, and of course our awesome hosts -
Thank you JoAnne
Seasons Greetings to you and yours too.
2010-WE HUNG IN THERE, PAYING ATTENTION TO IT ALL. UNFORTUNATELY, IT HAS TAKEN ITS TOLL ON MANY OF US. AND IT SHOULDN'T BE. THESE ARE THE FIGHTS WE WANTED WHEN PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS ELECTED.
BUT I KNOW I GREW A LITTLE SADDER THIS YEAR FROM ALL THE NEGATIVITY. THERE WERE SOME GOOD RESULTS AND A FEW NOT SO GOOD. THAT'S HOW IT GOES. THE WORK CONTINUES. BUT FOR NOW- THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR FOR CHILDREN AND REACHING OUT TO FRIENDS AND TV HOSTS WE LOST ALONG THE WAY IN THIS VERY DIFFICULT YEAR. NO ONE HAD MORE ON THE LINE THAN PRESIDENT OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY ON BEHALF OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. TO OUR PRESIDENT AND DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND ITS STRONG LEADERSHIP IN THE HOUSE & SENATE, THANK YOU. AND TO THE REPUBLICANS WHO PUT POLITICS ASIDE, THANK YOU AS WELL. WE COULDN'T HAVE PASSED WHAT WAS PASSED WITHOUT YOU. NO ONE PERSON OR ACTIVIST NEED GET CREDIT. CREDIT GOES TO ALL, EQUALLY. WORKING TOGETHER, WITH ONE GOAL.
TO MY SENATOR JOHN KERRY, OUTSTANDING. THANK YOU AS WELL TO SENATOR BROWN ON SOME VERY KEY VOTES. TO KEITH OLBERMANN WHO REPORTED TIRELESSLY ON HEALTH CARE CLINICS AND BRINGING TO LIGHT HIS REPORTING OF OUR CITIZENS IN ARIZONA WHO HAVE BEEN DENIED TRANSPLANTS.
KEITH, YOU HAVE THE SMARTEST PROGRAM ON TV. BECAUSE OF YOUR REPORTING, I LEARNED MORE ABOUT OUR HISTORY THIS YEAR THAN ALL MY YEARS COMBINED. AND TO LAWRENCE O'DONNELL, THE REPORTING OF CHILDREN IN AFRICA WHO NEED DESKS. AND HOW WE, AS ONE NATION, ANSWERED. WHO CAN EVER FORGET RACHEL'S BIKINI GRAPH? WHICH SAID MORE THAN WORDS COULD. THE AUTO WORKERS WHO WERE ABLE TO SURVIVE AND FLOURISH. DADT, THE 9/11 RESPONDER LEGISLATION. THESE THINGS WERE PASSED BECAUSE OF HARD WORK AND TENACITY. OUR TROOPS ON THE EVENING THEY LEFT IRAQ WITH RICHARD ENGEL THERE EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. THESE ARE THE STORIES I REMEMBER THIS CHRISTMAS. INCREDIBLE INCREDIBLE WORK DONE THIS YEAR.
THE DREAM ACT. MAY WE ALL COME TOGETHER AGAIN AS ONE TO GET THIS PASSED IN 2011.
TO MSNBC, MARK & DOMENICO, CHUCK, ET AL - THANKS FOR YOUR HARD WORK & HUMOR EACH AND EVERY DAY. AND ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR FAIRNESS. AND THANK YOU FOR MAKING FIRST READ A BLAST FOR ALL OF US. SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT, SO LITTLE TIME. LOL.
SO, IN THAT VEIN - WHAT WE NEED IS JOHNNY MATHIS AND A LITTLE CHRISTMAS - RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE. WE ALL NEED SOME "MERRY". ESPECIALLY FOR MY FRIENDS HERE ON FIRST READ. IT IS SOMETHING TO SEE YOU EACH AND EVERY DAY WHERE WE CAN REACH OUT TO PEOPLE ALL ACROSS OUR NATION. THIS SITE HAS BECOME A REAL COMMUNITY SINCE '06, ONE DAY, ONE STORY AT A TIME. WE SURVIVED IT ALL. {SMILE}
Haul out the holly
Put up the tree before my spirit falls again
Fill up the stocking
I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now
For we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute
Candles in the window
Carols at the spinet
Yes, we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute
It hasn't snowed a single flurry
But Santa, dear, we're in a hurry
So climb down the chimney
Turn on the brightest string of lights I've ever seen
Slice up the fruitcake
It's time we hung some tinsel on that evergreen bough
For I've grown a little leaner
Grown a little colder
Grown a little sadder
Grown a little older
And I need a little angel
Sitting on my shoulder
Need a little CHristmas now
For we need a little music
Need a little laughter
Need a little singing
Ringing through the rafter
And we need a little snappy
"Happy ever after"
Need a little Christmas now

Pat -
Great minds thinking alike again? See my post above - though I always hear the Ray Coniff singers instead of Johnny Mathis, which might explain why I got it wrong in the first place! Thanks for reminding us that in so many ways, it really was a very good year. All the best to you and yours.
I love Ray Coniff singers Christmas songs, JoAnne.
I was looking for Ray Coniff's version of this song, and lo and behold it wasn't they who sang it that I could find. It was the New Christy Minstrels - and they did a lovely version of it, but no Christmas pictures to go with the song - so who better than Mathis? Here's the version you may be referring to - btw, Percy Faith did it as well.

JoAnne, yes it was a good year as we look back. I hope you have a lovely lovely holiday and look forward to talking with you again in 2011.
An emergency came up late yesterday so I have to head into work now (vacation, what vacation?) Hopefully, this is the last emergency of the year. Ugh. Maybe Senator Graham had it right after all - it has turned into a week from hell for me in some ways. lol
Pat -- thanks for your kind words. Happy Holidays!
Yikes, you're right - it was Percy Faith I was thinking of after all - I give up! Though I may be the only other person in the world who has that new Christy Minstrels Christmas album too. And in wandering around YouTube, I came up with the one that's really from Ray Coniff that I'd forgotten:

Happy holidays (what's a "vacation" anyway?) :)
Pat. JoAnne, Nash, and all my other friends on the East Coast and in the South, make sure you stay in and enjoy what Santa brought you. If your cable goes out maybe you can read or re-read some of your favorite books or watch DVDS. Dr No, Joe in Albany and other righties, make sure you don’t blame the blizzard on President Obama.
I will never forget that January of 1967 in Chicago. We got 23 inches of snow in Chicago and the suburbs. I got caught in the blizzard coming home from work. It took me 3 days to get home; and then the cab driver had to walk me 30 blocks because no one had plowed the snow in the boondocks where I lived. My mom invited him in for coffee and dinner to warm up. He refused. My mom, dad, sisters and brothers were elated to see me as Iwas to see them. that incident was another time in America history peopled pulled together to help each other. I think of it as a mini 9-11.
It was a good thing I had my go-go boots on to compliment my mini skirt. It was like spring weather a couple of days before. The Blizzard surely demonstrated the Chicago saying "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.”
Here's a little something for ya'll to enjoy....
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

If the kids wanna go outside, here’s a by little jazz piece by Kenny G.
Winter Wonderland
Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight.
Walking in a winter wonderland.
Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song,
As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.
In the meadow we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown
He'll say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man,
But you can do the job
When you're in town.
Later on, we'll conspire,
As we dream by the fire
To face unafraid,
The plans that we've made,
Walking in a winter wonderland.
In the meadow we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's a circus clown
We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,
Until the alligators knock him down.
When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,

They need to stop refering to Rahm as 'dead fish'. Everytime I see that, I think I'm going to read a blurb about Palin.
Hey, Feisty- look who made it back from his date. And as full of sh*t as ever, I might add.
Well, I see our resident grinches can't resist spreading a little more doom and gloom. I did ask Santa to bring them a sense of humor for Christmas. To Mark and Domenico, it has been interesting to say the least. Thanks so much for all of your hard work, I am certain there were times that you were busy researching and writing when you would have preferred being with your families. To all my friends (and foes, one must always wish the best for one's foes, isn't that what the season is about?) a very happy holiday season. I hope Santa brings you exactly what you want! Feisty; another feral cat found us and gifted us with kittens. They have been hiding under the hay, but now that I know she is there, we have been supplementing her food, and she is no longer looking desperately thin and ill. Should make a good recovery. Barn is warm, so kittens will survive our cold weather. They are starting to come out and try to decide if they want to make friends with me. Happy holidays to all! See you next year.
Christmas kittens?! Santa came to your house, well, barn, early! From one cat lover to another, thanks for taking good care of a new momma and her litter.
There is nothing on this green earth more darling than a kitten- good luck with the new brood!
Kittens you say? Keep me posted on their progress... I might be able to provide a loving home for one... ;0)
Oh... and spot on with your Grinch observation!
Good Luck with them finding a sense of humor - their type scream they're starving with a loaf of bread under each arm... lol
I'd ask Santa to bring them some much needed happiness, but that would be a waste of time as well!
Merry Christmas NewDay!
Thank you, Newday. Happy Holidays!
You, too, Mark!
You mean we have something in common? Good figure. A very pretty litter, and starting to put on weight.
Merry Christmas to you too Feisty.
They should find him eligible. He votes there, he does his banking there, his house is there even though he rented it his name is on the mortgage or deed, he didn't buy a home in DC; he maintained a permanent residency in IL. ILL has a clause which allows those who leave the state to do government work elsewhere to retain residency.
Merry Christmas everyone.
I wonder who can do the most hits of acid, and still run a keyboard- NoJo, or "ME First"??
Looks like we got a contest going here, and....wait, pulling up on the outside is.....Joe, Albany! Hang on folks- gonna be a tight one!

So true drive-by-observer
The naughty people are competing for a hot spot. Especially, Joe in Albany's little spill regarding the new Congress that will use U.S. counterterrorism policy for political gain. Next their politics of fear will be on turkey and cranberry sauce.
You’re doin’ a heck of a job, Joe in Albany!!!
DBO, back in the Day, I woulda put myself there with the Best ofem. O well, that day it gone, but i still light my Bic & watch the Tracers in the dark. Memory's of Days goneby.
I'd like to wish each & E 1 of ya here @1st read a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. Santa gave me an eary present last week, my 5th Grandbaby, 6lb-5oz, 20 inches long, Baby Boy with a headful of dark hair.
Happy Holidays from Rural Kentucky!
YeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaW !
You Betcha!
Merry Christmas to you & yours Rick!
Don't forget I want pic's of the new addition to the Kentucky Truth Teller family when you have a chance!
You BETCHA!
Some of us get too passionate about left and right sometimes things get out of hand. This week was a great way to end the year. Looking forward to the conversations next year!
I can't take credit for this but wanted to pass it on.
HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!!!
Mayonnaise Jar & Two Beers...
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full..
They agreed it was..
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full.
The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'
The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space
between the sand.
The students laughed..
'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.
The sand is everything
else---the small stuff.
'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Spend time with your children.
Spend time with your parents.
Visit with grandparents.
Help people
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your spouse out to dinner.
Play another 18.
Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter.
Set your priorities.
The rest is just sand.
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.
The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.'
The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers with a friend.
yellowdog - nice analogy, may you and yours enjoy a safe and happy holiday
Same to you, american.
Peace.
I, too, have read this before and it was just as good this time, yellowdog, as it was every other time.
Thanks for posting it.
One of my favorites is Johnny Mathis's version of The Christmas Song. I'm a fan of the Ray Coniff singers--have some of those albums, vinyl.
Mark, Ali and FR staff--Have a wonderful holiday. Mark M, enjoy your week off, we'll keep Domenico company from time to time.
Good morning everyone....
Id like to wish all of you a Merry Jesus' Birthday.....
No Happy Holidays...... This time of year is reserved to celebrate the birth of the one and only King of all Kings, Lord of Lords and Savior to all.
I hope everyone remembers that HE is the REAL gift on Christmas and EVERY OTHER DAY OF THE YEAR.
Happy Birthday Jesus.
Or, the joy of the children waiting for Santa Claus. I think that is far more fun and important.

Different cultures maintain and celebrate this season for different reasons during the Christmastide. Actually, Christmas is part pagan. The Catholic church incorporated pagan traditions in order to curry favor (indoctrinate) with a larger populace hence, more members, more money for the Church.
http://www.experts123.com/q/what-pagan-traditions-did-the-roman-catholic-church-incorporate-into-their-beliefs.html
When Constantine became Emperor of Rome, he nominally at least became a "Christian." But being the head of a far-flung political Empire, he was concerned about the unity and coherence and stability of his Empire. As a sagacious politician, he sought to reconcile and blend and mesh pagan practices with "Christian" beliefs, to merge paganism with the Roman church.

Some of us in American’s celebrate holidays that, although unconnected with the [winter] solstice, occur near it: Ramadan, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa etc
Happy Birthday Jesus.
The date is not known since the Bible doesn't give a lot of clues as to what time of the year the birth of Jesus happened.
http://petragrail.tripod.com/page5.html
Josephus records an eclipse of the moon just before Herod passed on. This occurred on March 12th or 13th in 4 B.C. Josephus also tells us that Herod expired just before Passover. This feast took place on April 11th, in the same year, 4 B.C. From other details supplied by Josephus, we can pinpoint Herod the Great's demise as occurring between March 29th and April 4th in 4 B.C.

Although I am no longer Catholic or any religion for that matter, I do love Christmas. I enjoy all the merriment, gift giving and the share of peace and good will. As I’ve said before I think I am more spiritual because I’m wishing everyone a Happy Holiday season. I plan on celebrating a progressive Christmas not a Fox Noise right wing authorities rule.
But, for you I wish you a Merry Jesus' Birthday.
I suggest you read about the history of Christianity and pagan holidays. Some of it is in the links. Hope you enjoy.
To those celebrating Kwanzaa, Happy Kwanzaa.
Today’s principle of the 7 principles of Kwanzaa is Umoja or "unity" Despite popular belief, the seven-day holiday known as Kwanzaa is not celebrated by only African-Americans.
http://www.thestarpress.com/article/20101226/NEWS01/12260346/Everyone-welcome-to-celebrate-Kwanzaa
I remember my first Kwanzaa celebration in the early 70’s. Each mother was asked to bring a mat or blanket, a dish and a drink. I brought my famous pasta salad and unsweneted kool aide with apples, cherries and pineapples in it.
My children and I sat on the floor in the famous Regal Theater and honored the seven principles. I also remember some of the politicians being there who now have gone on to become elder statesmen from Chicago.
We were entertained by the Sun Drummers Drum Corps, Muntu , and . Najwa Dance Troupes, as well as displays of martial arts.. one of my college classmates now a registered dietitian (RD) became a dancer in the Najwa Dance Troupe. She can tell you just as much about the humam body and its illnesses as just about any medical doctor.

Today Kwanzaa is celebrated around the world in the 42 years since it was created byLos Angeles professor, Dr. Maulana Karenga.

To all My Friends in Chicago
Does it seem strange to any of you that only after Rahm was escorted out of the White House for the last time that things began to get done in Washington?
Don't no how that will play into things in Chicago, but let the games begin
Looking back at the history of politics in Chicago, I am confident that Rahm will fit right in
Happy holidays to all
Robert in Ohio
To all My Friends in Chicago
Does it seem strange to any of you that only after Rahm was escorted out of the White House for the last time that things began to get done in Washington?
Considering that Rahm was demoted to a cubicle in the Clinton Administration, No it doesn't.
What does surprise me though is how Morning Joke& Co could not get understand why President Obama was included in the most influential list.
Plus, Cenk's liberal, unadulterated, rightwing , screed, yesterday was disgusting. Some liberals in this younger generation have short-attention-spans.
Like I said before it's a shame Rahm got Tea Bagged. As usual the GOP/ RE-the-lie- publican'ts employed the divide and conquer playbook.
Happy Holidays to you
BTW: I think either Valarie Jarret or Bill Burton would make good replacements for Gibbs. They are both more articulate than him.
Happy Christmas, Beverly!
Good to see you this morning ladies!
Being Christmas Eve I thought this e-mail I received from OUR President would be appropriate for sharing:
Mimosa anyone? Cheers!
Feisty
Good to see you this morning ladies!
Being Christmas Eve I thought this e-mail I received from OUR President would be appropriate for sharing:Take a look at the progress we've made in your area -- and share the stories you read with your friends and family:
I got that e-mail too and YES it's worth sharing. Yes We Did. That drives the unpatriotic, nonsensical, right wing nut-so.
Pat thanks for sharing. We have one of the most beautiful families in the White House. I'll reserve my comments about Sarah Palin's jealousy of the First Lady for later. It's a beautiful time of the year so I won't be a spoiler.
Happy Holidays, Pat
Robert, while Rahm is an experienced politician I don't think he ever truly understood the appeal of Barack Obama. He's more the Clintonesque "triangulation" sort. As a result the President sometimes looked more like an old-style pol than expected without having the kill or be killed focus of the Rahminator and his like. It just didn't work.
best thing about xmas is all the politicians are out of washington, the vote couldnt get them all but the holiday can...tHANK GOD
Some very moving photographs of President Obama and the reception he receives from people. The second photo says it all. To President Obama, Merry Christmas.

Good Morning to you Pat!
Thanks for sharing & wishing you a VERY Merry Christmas!

The prettiest song ever written. Irving Berlin's
I'm dreaming of a White Christmas, just like the ones I used to know, where the tree tops glisten & children listen - to hear sleigh bells in the snow....
Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. Magical ending to the movie - White Christmas. Especially at the 2:25 mark on.

Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you Pat. Will be watching White Christmas tonight with my daughters. Also love the song that Rosemary and Bing sing about counting our blessings.
Thanks Pat - that ones an all time classic!
And thanks to Rosemary & the Clooney family for giving us George! lol ;0)

Merry Christmas California Tom.

Happy Christmas, Beverly!
Thank you newday. Happy Christmas to you too. Here's hoping Santa brings you every thing you want this Christmastide.
It's predicted we are going to have ' White Chritmas" here in the Heartland. So brace your self if you're going to Grandma's house. We're going to get up to 8 inches of snow as well as ice here in Illinois.
It's already started out here in the burbs...
The stockings are hung by the chimney with care... let the countdown start before the festivities begin!
For those that are going to be driving - be careful & be safe!
Beverly: We got 6 inches earlier in the week and another storm headed our way next. Hope Santa is good to you too! Best thing about First Read is the new friends I have made! Stay safe and warm.

I looking out window; but, I don't see any yet. I better hurry though. I need to get a few last minute items. Shame on me.
I love First Read and my friends here. You are so right it is one of the best things@ FR.
I'll try to check in periodically in between times the family comes by.
Nash Happy Holidays, Miss You.
I would like to send a very special Christmas to someone. I had missed The Last Word's initial reporting last week on the children's classrooms in Africa and was able to see the complete story which they re-aired last night. For some reason, this story has touched me in a way I can't articulate. It is moments like this when we realize how important and powerful tv can be.
Welcome to MSNBC Lawrence O'Donnell. Despite my having a large family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and such, it was you who made my Christmas by bringing this story to light. Again, may you have a very special Merry Christmas, from one Bostonian to another.

You can bet larry has many stacks of money stuffed in his freezer. He got the idea from another brilliant liberal... He needs something like this to brag about cause his and the network ratings probably don't score high enough to be at the bottom with Trollberman and Madsow....
Daniels from the welfare state of Indiana running for President. Another Republican candidate from a welfare state. Indiana, much like Mississippi, has no excuse for not being able to survive without welfare from the federal government. Balancing the budget with federal funds is not balancing your budget or living within your means. No one from a welfare state will ever get my vote for anything. Obama 2012.
Sad to be a liberal nowadays. They need a little time off after seeing their agenda, congress people, and Prez get flushed down the toileto....... More of the same for the next 2 years and then we can flush many more down the toilet. You gotta admit(and Sotero still mentions it) the funniest arguements were over how many jobs were "SAVED". It must be in the billions by now. Heard the private sector lost 3 million and the gooberment hired 600,000. Only an elitist liberal can be happy with those numbers......
Christmas Day Photographs.
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama visiting US Military and their families at Anderson Hall at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden visit with troops and their families on Christmas Day at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
“Did you get everything you wanted?” President Obama asked one little girl. She said she did and showed him her new bracelet. He checked it out and pointed to Michelle Obama’s wrist, indicating that she, too, had a new bracelet. The first lady and the little girl compared bracelets.
At another point, Michelle Obama cradled a tiny infant baby who was wearing a Christmas bib. Another little boy at the table kept telling the president, “I got a punching bag for Christmas! I got a punching bag for Christmas!” So the president held up his hands and let the little kid take a few whacks at his palms.

Thanks Pat for the beautiful photographs. The First couple look absolutely warm. The First Lady looks lovely warm and gracious as usual.
I forgot to mention the extraordinary humane deeds of President Obama and the First Lady. Especially, First Lady Michelle Obama.
First Lady Michelle Obama also helped track Santa's path. First Lady Michelle Obama spent over 40 minutes on the phone with children, answering Christmas Eve queries from kids as to where Santa is and how soon he will be at their home.

The First Lady is a national treasure.
I hope you and your children are snuggled in comfortably for the duration of the blizzard.
Hi Beverly. I agree - the photos were lovely. I love how both the President & First Lady interact with children.
We are indeed getting slammed with a blizzard at this very moment. Lots of howling winds right now. But all are safe and warm. Football game tonite was cancelled on NBC, so planned on watching The Sound of Music. Now that may be cancelled for viewing as we're getting local weather forecasts for most likely the rest of the evening.
The hills are alive with the Sound of Music ...
I once took a boat ride on a lake surrounded by the Austrian Alps and I remember wondering at the time if there was a more picturesque place on earth. If there is, I don't know where it is. Gorgeous, breathtaking views.
Question :
Why do politicians demand that there always be "grey areas" or "loopholes" toward their specific benefit for otherwise clearly intended laws ???
This is a perfect example of why America is so disgusted with politicians who always demand that specific rules be "bent" to best serve them.
America - The BOSS of Politicians
My Question is..
Since Michelle Bachmann is a psycho talker, how can Michelle Bachmann teach Constitutional educational classes? Worst, how can a Supreme Court judge, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia allegedly agree to teach the first course?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/15/michele-bachmann-scalia-constitution-class_n_796610.html\
==========================================================
Michele Bachmann may think she is putting a new coat of paint on the house. But, she’s not putting any thing new in the house. I dread not many patriots in her classes; just more of the same crazed Tea Baggers. In addition to that, it will be the worsening of the same message; the President and liberals are destroying our nation and disrespecting the Constitution. What a shame!!! This desperation is going to wreak havoc, I predict.
Michele's smoke machine will create a new foggy bottom for sure. No doubt Michelle Bachman has/is pulling off scam to Tea Baggers.
The Congress shall have the power to set limits on contributions and expenditures made to influence the outcome of any federal election.

A memo states, Glenn Beck has addressed this regular gathering of conservative corporate executives in previous years. Past Koch meetings have included various Republican lawmakers, including DeMint, and Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia as speakers.

Impeach Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia
Reverse the Supreme Court's anti-democratic interpretation of our Constitution.
