DADT repeal timeline still uncertain

From NBC's Jim Miklaszewski
As President Barack Obama signs legislation to roll back the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, Pentagon officials still don't have a clue how long it will take to implement the repeal and lift the ban on gays and lesbians openly serving in the military.

The law itself says the repeal will not take effect until Secretary Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen and the President himself certify the military's readiness.

But before that certification, the Pentagon needs to come up with a plan for implementation to deal specifically with issues such as housing and benefits for same-sex partners, the rights of gays and lesbians (particularly in the area of enlistment or re-enlistment), and an education and training regimen for all servicemembers.

While the law itself does not lay out a timetable for those plans, Gates has suggested that it could take as long as a year.

There also appears to be no desire among Pentagon officials to slap a moratorium on enforcement of Don't Ask Don't Tell pending that implementation and certification process.

In October, Gates imposed new more stringent procedures for enforcement of the ban -- which many in the military already consider a de facto moratorium.

The Pentagon doesn't know if any new DADT cases have been referred up the chain of command since then.

However, Pentagon officials and the service chiefs have made it clear to servicemembers that until certification, DADT remains the law. Anyone who openly declares they are gay or lesbian could be subject to separation from the service -- at least as of now.

At least now Mullens and Gates can come out of the closet.

Or calling them pathetic a$$holes?

A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. It is a strong, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. Stick with your meds and your therapist; eventually you'll overcome it.

May I suggest you check your list of phobias. Which ever one(s) you choose to identify with whether it's homophobia or not; you need to know in either case is a mental disorder.

The proponents of the view that homosexuality is a normal variant of human sexuality argue for the elimination ofany reference to homosexuality in a manual of psychiatric disorders because it is scientifically incorrect, encouragesan adversary relationship between psychiatry and the homosexual community, and is misused by some peopleoutside of our profession who wish to deny civil rights to homosexuals.

President Obama said....The repeal "will strengthen our national security and uphold (America's) ideals," . "No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie."This is a moment "more than two centuries in the making," the president said. Over the course of U.S. history, "gay Americans fought just as hard (and) gave just as much to protect" the country as anyone else. "We are a nation that believes all men and women are created equal."

============================================================

JoeCool-2344366

It's true Beverly,

All men and Women are created equal.............

Allowing gays in the military will not strengthen our National Security..... Some countries Especially in the Middle East may even ban our troops because of it.

Believing that gays don't have a mental disorder is a phobia.......

It's called "Notbelievinginthetruth" phobia.......

Then I suggest you work on that; JoeCool. That would be the coolest thing you can do for yourself and country!!!

No gay or lesbian military personnel will act any differently when this ban is implemented. They are professionals and their duty comes first.  It didn't take any time to implement DADT, and there is absolutely no logical reason to delay ending DADT totally.

Buttttttt.......... The UCMJ doesn't have "Rules" it has "Articles" but there not "Articles" in the sense of

what you'd read in "Penthouse" or "Maxim". There more like Laws, in that if you break them, bad stuff happens to you. And Sodomy's one of the things you can't do in the Military, like have a Beard(Unless your a chick or Black) or smoke the Ganja.

In fact, I think it's Article 69 of the UCMJ, who says the Military doesnt have a sense of humor?

Now we can qualify all the high school dropouts and drug users. Enlistment is not a right, there are standards. There is a good argument given by the crowd that says they are living a lie in regards to the honor code, but the argument that it is a civil rights issue is wrong. Most people pushing this think they are too good to serve themselves. There is a concern about the "walking blood bank" and if you don't know what that is, you've never served.

Its over though, now maybe we can get them to fix real problems, since it seems to be the most important issue on the democrat's plate.

          This is a first step.

One may be allowed to "tell or ask" but is still prohibited from "doing."

Until amended, Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) governs this type of conduct by persons in the U.S. military services .

          ...................................................................................................

Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ)

          ART. 125. SODOMY

          (a) Any person subject to this chapter who engages in unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy. Penetration , however slight, is sufficient to complete the offense.

          (b) Any person found guilty of sodomy shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

Note: For specific details concerning this offense, including elements of proof, maximum punishments, and detailed explanation, see Punitive Articles of the UCMJ.

Without having any first hand knowledge, many people are all too ready to voice this or that opinion about military service and those who serve. This is a matter best resolved by those of wisdom who have requisite knowledge, which is not acquired from reading a book or taking a course in behavior, law, psychology, etc.

aunte facist ... just wondering how this will play out if two homosexuals in uniform are kissing in public? Does the UCMJ forbid this or are we know going to see military homosexuals flaunting their new found freedom? If military homosexuals continue to use discretion in these matters I'm sure all will be fine; however, if they decide it's their right to openly express their homosexuality it will be a problem especially in the Marine Corps. They are tested every two years, biennially, and they are not booted. They will not be deployed outside the continental U.S., but they will not get the boot.

Umm, yeah, don't know much bout the military except for 1600+ hrs in Hornets, 200 in combat, Bosnia, Iraq, and a few in the Stan')

I coulda sworn we got tested annually, but I never asked when they drew blood and they never told (get it?) Now I fly 767s for umm probably shouldn't say, but it rhymes with "Delta". And yes, I know most of the Male Flight Attendants are Homos, thank god we get to lock the Cockpit now.. Yeah, we still call it a "Cockpit" even though "Flight Deck" is more PC.

Not Deployed outside the continental US?? Not even Hawaii? Well isn't that Special?

And you do know that continental U.S. means the North American continent, right?

And really, they make you lock the cockpit door just to clean the cabin?

This issue has little to do with gays. It has to do with women. Gay men mostly have an aversion to violence. However gay women want to serve. The Marine Corp has an issue with women. They feel, maybe rightly so, that women cannot pull their weight in the Corp. A lot of men cannot either. So lets be honest.

The study shows wide disparities in scores among white and minority students, similar to racial gaps on other standardized tests. Nearly 40 percent of black students and 30 percent of Hispanics don't pass, compared with 16 percent of whites. The average score for blacks is 38 and for Hispanics is 44, compared to whites' average score of 55.

This means the poor blacks and hispanics will have to put up with smart white homo's! This country is done, we need a revolution to get rid of the people who want the government to take care of them from cradle to grave. Purge out the useless idiot's.
