Military 'birther' sentenced

The Army doctor who refused to deploy to Afghanistan because he challenged President Obama's birthright has been sentenced to six months confinement and ordered discharged from the Army.

Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin had considered any order from the commander-in-chief, President Obama, unlawful because he claimed the president has not proven he was born in the United States.

Besides today's sentence, Lakin will pay a potentially heavy financial price. At 18 years in the Army, he was two years short of retirement, which over the course of a lifetime could have added up to an estimated $2 million in retirement pay and benefits.

Lakin had pleaded guilty to one charge, and was convicted of another in failing to report for deployment to Afghanistan in a court martial at Fort Meade, MD.

I can't wait to see all of his fellow "birthers" come to his defense after this blog post.

Hang on...let me get some popcorn.

If his brains were dynamite, he could not blow his nose. These people are dangerous. They are the type that shoot politicians. Thank you Fox News. Thank you Rush Limbaugh. How did he get to be a colonel anyway? Although, just wait, somebody will chime in about this guy being a loyal American and a political prisoner. The batsh_t will commence soon.

Don't get me wrong, but that is a lot in pay and benefits, no wonder our government is going broke.

Do you have any idea what a Lt Colon does?

I agree BigBear. But at least this those receiving military pensions and benefits have earned it. Better they get my tax dollars than congress critters and government employees.

Why do you think government empoyees don't deserve what they make?

    Oh....cable news...strikes again.

      #3.3 - Fri Dec 17, 2010 1:05 PM EST

Sorry, don't watch cable news. Don't watch local news for that matter, either. When they stopped reporting news and started playing the ratings game I was out. I prefer to read my news from different sources and form my own conclusion, thanks.

As for why I have issues with government employees- it's less salary in most cases than it is benefits packages. When the people paying for your benefits couldn't ever dream of seeing those same benefits through their private sector job while at the same time contributing to their own benefits packages, there's a problem. To the police, fire fighters and military personnel who put their own lives on the line in order to protect mine I have no issue but the paper pushers and congress critters should live under the same set up as those of us who pay their salaries.

This is a sad thing. Those who are to blame, FOX, Limbaugh, Beck, Orly Tates and the rest of the purveyors of this lie and hundreds of other lies will continue earning their salaries without punishment, without ever telling their loyal viewers the truth while Lt.Col Lakin sacrificed his military career, his pension because he believed the lie. Who knows whether he believed it or used it as an excuse but either way those who promote lies, some claiming to be good Christians, cause harm to many.

As a senior enlisted active duty service member, I found this Colonel behavior to be unbecoming of an officer. If this guy was taking his cue from Rush and others birther, than this guy was not fit to even lead the most junior in our ranks, who look to us for leadership and guidance. What is even more sad about this LtCol is this: He's a coward, who didn't stand up for what he believe when the "going got tough" during his court matial. I hope his wife and family trash him for stupidity, and for wasting their time. Now, that he will be discharge from the military after six month of brig time, he will have enough time to do his birth certificate research. I will be very suprise if he doesn't start by going to Hawaii. Good luck to him!!!!

WOW John, as a senior enlisted guy to comment from a person that has as no proof, ie Jody, to form a public opinion on something you don't know. Pretty bold statement to speak or give an opinion about the man's family. A little NCOPD for you, say, "According to the UCMJ, this LT. Colonal's behavior is unbecoming of an officer". To throw you're opinion as an "senior enlisted" towards an officer is too a violation of the UCMJ. Good luck to you in your career!!!! God help your Soldiers that serve under you!!!

Please cite where enlisted men are not allowed to have an opinion and/or speak out against officers? As a former 71D, I never once came upon any such statute in the UCMJ. Further, as Lakin is neither is his chain of command and also has been found guilty and sentenced, he is no longer granted any benefits of his station as an officer. Therefore, any comments made by an enlisted man do not count as any form of subordination.

IF obama was born in Kenya i hope it comes to light before 2012...the colonel and all military are sworn by oath to defend the constitution....i read it was Pelosi who "vouched" for Obama.

There are youtube vids on this...several where Michelle refers to Kenya as her husband's homeland. And one of obama saying he was not even a US citizen.....his grandmother lives in kenya and speaks only swahilli...she was interviewed and said Obama was born in kenya.

why all the secrecy? there are many questions and perhaps the most damning is that his father was not born in the USA, and his mother was so young she fails the 5 year rule.

                        Paul,

I served for twenty years plus and a coward is a coward! You don't have to have served to recognize a coward for whom they are. When you are a leader you have a responsibility to your soldiers to be an example to them. If a man/woman is in Authority he/she must also be under Authority. You cannot separate Authority from the responsibility that comes with it. A blind man can see that.

I think the only reason you have issues with anyone calling Lieutenant Col Lankin a coward is because you actually are a birth-er too and believe what he believes? You hate the Pres for your own personal reasons (race is a strong possibility) whatever they are. Thats my opinion for what its worth.

The $2 million in retirement and benefits is over the course of the remainder of his lifetime. It is not just monetary but includes funeral and burial, medical, dental, prescriptions and other benefits that do add up. It sounds like a lot until you consider how much the other items cost.

Lt Col Terrence Lakin known as Terry Lakin, is correct in all he has done. Mr Obama's grandmother, joyfully said on the telephone into a cassette tape, held by a Republican,' Barack was born in Kenya, and she was there.' 0r Obama's mother was not allowed on any plane leaving Kenya Africa, because THEIR LAW IS, A LATE TERM BIRTH MAY OCCUR ON THE PLANE, AND THEY DID NOT WANT THAT HAPPENING. And all birth certificates, must have the doctors signature, or the midwifes signature. The birth papers seen on TV or computer are not the originals of anyones. And Mr Obama has said on U- TUBE at least 30 times, if not 40 times, " I am a MUSLIM." And his lawyer wife, said his homeland in Kenya, I am from many ethnic groups, plus, and my homeland is America. And an M. D. signed my birth certificate, and I was born at home. And I have it. and a copy of all birth certificates, make marks on them if they are copied, I found out when I copied mine. They can't be copied to be legal. A print shows up all over the copy, making it null and void. so what you see on the computer etc is not a birth certificate. Merry Christmas to Americas !

Nice Kevin! But don't try to reason with these people, they do not have that capacity. They are sold and will not change their minds, they are programmed by propaganda peddlers. Think about the people, they would not be able to deal with logic or reason, that is why they are perfect for the programming that has been deployed upon them.

Once when I was having a hard time in life a friend who is a psychologist told me, "don't try and reason with crazy people, because it will drive you crazy". Basically that is the reason they are nuts, because they do not have the capacity to reason. They are built to order for the propaganda peddlers.

Thank you Kevin. I was afraid I had fallen into an old "Twilight Zone" episode. But your posts are proof that the loons haven't taken over. The amount of bat poop wandering the streets is very alarming. The Birthers are a prime example. I really worry for our country. I wonder if in England or Germany there are voters running around babbling about Cameron's or Merkel's birth certificates. Those high school graduation rates have got to be addressed. Also, I think the internet seems to have eliminated critical thinking, the kind of thinking that can recognize the smell of a really ripe lie.

And gosh, is it just me, but it seems nobody ever challenged a white President's birth certificate. McCain was born on a foreign naval base, and nobody went gaga over that. In rural Tennessee, I know that some people flew the flag upside down on Obama's inauguration day. Maybe it is just good old fashioned racism being cast at someone with black and foreign blood. That is what it smells like.

FOX ENTERTAINMENT should be next to be prosecuted for all of the BS they spew daily,,,,,,,,,But of course during the Congressional hearings they covered their own butts simply by pulling out an FCC license that gives them about as much credibility as Saturday Night Live by stating that their actually a "Conservative Entertainment" network and not a "news" channel and therefore they are not required to provide factual information in their programming.

The funny part is that even after they admitted this the mindless masses that watch FOX still believe it all

Well-deserved punishment. I hope more military "birthers" will come out openly so that we can fill our brigs and get rid of these menaces. Lakin and people like him simply cannot stomach the fact that even a half-black US citizen can be a commander in chief and our President. Grow up guys! US is a democracy. People elect the leaders that they want. We are not a banana republic although we became one not too long ago when the US Supreme Court installed a President who did not get a plurality of votes. Thank God, we removed that stain with the election of President Obama. This 20 year army veteran is proud to see a man like Obama being the Commander in Chief.

Whether you agree with his point of view or not you have to at least agree he is a man of conviction and principal. He has sacrificed much for his beliefs. What sacrifice have you made? What sacrifice are you willing to make? Do you REALLY know the truth of this matter? Do you even care about the TRUTH?

                                                            Buzz Fuzzle:

I believe I may be able to comment, or voice an opinion. I gave 19 years to the Military, I am now a 100% Disabled Veteran. I have sacrificed. LtCol Lakin is entitled to his own opinion, but he wasn't Court Martialed for his opinion. He was Court Martialed for violating factual UCMJ Articles. There is a saying "You are entitled to your own opinion, just not your own facts". As for the truth. There have been those who have said they had proof that President Obama was born in Kenya, or even Indonesia. But that "proof" has been proven fake. As for the President being an American, the proof is at FactCheck.org, The Governor of Hawaii verified his birth, the Secretary for Hawaii State Health Department physically verified his birth certificate, and verified the name of the Doctor and the Hospital he was born in. The US Congress accepted his eligibility to be President, as well as the Electoral College. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court swore him in to office. If you chose to not accept these facts that is your choice and opinion. There has been verifiable proof that President Obama was born in Hawaii. All the proof that "birthers" claim exists hasn't been verified, and what has been submitted as facts has been proven fake.

I worked in the Vital Statistics division for 18 months, and processed between 100-150,000 requests for birth certificates. I also created between 1-5000 *NEW* birth certificates for newborns.

it is with great conviction that I assure you that it is virtually impossible for Barack Obama to have successfully "forged" a birth certificate, and tricked the Hawaiian Registrar (the keeper of all birth certificates).

it is also with great conviction that I assure you that Hawaii no longer issues the "long form" copy which birthers are demanding. Hawaii is one of about 15 states to have implemented this practice. (interestingly, Arizona - home of the "show us your papers" mandates - has also barred long form birth certificates).

and finally, it is with great conviction that I assure you that even if Hawaii *DID* produce long form copies, that none of you are entitled to see the document. birth certificates are private, confidential records of self-identification. for a non-Hawaiian to demand to see this document, based merely on suspicion of a crime, literally spits in the face of both the 4th and 10th amendments.

The problem, though, is that while any reasonable, sane person would be satisfied with your information, birthers will completely disregard the true facts and continue to call for the mythical "long form birth certificate". They are also unable to grasp the concept of American law which requires THEM to prove their allegations (with real, not fictional, documents, etc). The accused does not have to prove their allegations...even though he already has by releasing his legal birth certificate...which they don't believe is real....even though it's the only one that the state of Hawaii releases....which they believe is a coverup...which isn't possible....but his grandmother said....but there were newspaper announcements back in 1961...but they were plants...because Obama is apparently a Manchurian candidate...with the name Barack Obama....but he's a Muslim...radical Christian...atheist...socialist...communist...black...no...white...no white hating...Indonesian...Kenyan...American....no strike that last one...American hating...progressive...liberal...moderate........and Merry Christmas to all and to all a...good night!

They went through a Court procedure and received their "Certificate of Citizenship", that is an affirmation that they are Americans first. IMMIGRANTS who naturalize in this country, receive a "Naturalization Certificate" and are still ineligible for the Presidency (like Gov Schwartzenegger) I do not know what Sen Goldwater, born outside the United States, had when he ran for President, but I sure would like someone to take a look at Sen John McCain, if you are going to give the candidates equal treatment! The Senator was born in a foreign country, the Panama Canal Zone, like my son, and should have gone through the above mentioned Court procedure, to include a Citizenship Test. If he did not, he is a Panamanian.

You stupid, ignorant 'Birthers' do not know the laws of your own country. Please check to see Sen McCain's Certificate of Citizenship before you continue your racist attacks on the President of the United States.
