New NBC/WSJ poll: If this is as bad as it gets for Obama, he’s in good shape for 2012… If not, watch out… What’s benefiting the president right now: a strong base and the fact the public finds him likeable… Palin’s poor poll position… A red flag for Obama on Afghanistan… Afghanistan review is out… House to vote on the tax deal… And Biden tells GOP senators opposing New START to let the Senate vote on the measure.
*** As bad as it gets? Here's the clear conclusion from our new NBC/WSJ poll: If the current political environment for President Obama has hit rock bottom, then his prospects for re-election are quite good. If it hasn't, then watch out. Despite all the bad news the White House has endured over the past several months -- an unemployment rate near 10%, the BP spill, the midterm results -- the president's standing has remained steady. His job-approval rating stands at 45% (which isn't far off from where it was a year ago, when it was 47%); his economic handling is at 42% (same as it was a year ago); and 72% say they like Obama personally, even if they don't like his policies. What's more, in potential 2012 match-ups, he bests Romney by seven points (47%-40%), Palin by 22 points (55%-33%), and a relatively generic candidate like John Thune by 20 points (47%-27%). Of course, Thune and Romney both hold him under 50%.
*** What’s benefiting Obama: Two things appear to be benefiting Obama. The first is his strong base: 87% of African Americans, 76% of Democrats, and 53% of Latinos approve of his job. It’s worth noting, however, that Obama’s numbers among Dems have dropped since cutting his tax deal with the Republicans (from 82% last month to 76% now). But NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) sees the slight erosion as a flesh wound. (Those same Dems who move away from the president in the job rating question come back to Obama when matched up against the 2012 Republicans.) The second thing benefiting Obama is that an overwhelming number of Americans find him likeable. He gets his highest marks in the poll for having a strong family and family values (74% give him a high rating here), being easygoing and likeable (68%), being inspirational and exciting (51%), and having strong leadership qualities (49%). His lowest marks come on the professional side: being a good commander-in-chief (41%), achieving his goals (33%), uniting the country (30%), and changing Washington (24%). Bottom line: The jury's still out on whether the president is going to be successful or not, as over 40% tell us it's STILL too soon to judge what kind of president Obama is going to be.
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
*** Palin’s poor poll position: The other chief headline in the NBC/WSJ poll is Sarah Palin’s starting position for 2012, if she decides to run. In addition to Obama leading her by a whopping 22 points -- compared with Romney’s seven-point deficit, and a generic GOP candidate’s three-point deficit in the poll -- Palin’s negative rating has climbed to 50%. That’s the highest negative rating for anyone measured in this poll (and it’s two points lower than Nancy Pelosi’s negative rating from last month). And get this: The only major subgroups that Palin wins in a head-to-head match-up with Obama are Republicans, conservatives, and FOX viewers. That’s it, folks. NBC/WSJ co-pollster Bill McInturff (R) says that this is “a sobering starting point” for Palin if she decides to run for president.
*** A red flag on Afghanistan for Obama: Yet there’s also a red flag in this poll for Obama -- and it comes from his left flank. But it’s on the issue of Afghanistan, not taxes. While Americans, by a 53%-to-45% margin, approve keeping U.S. troops in Afghanistan until 2014, those numbers are reversed among Democrats. In the survey, 53% of Dems oppose that and just 46% approve. If Obama gets a challenge from the left -- and that still remains a big if -- then this could be the opening, Hart says. As we've said before, size-of-government issues animate the right and are usually the basis for conservative primary challenges. Anti-war issues animate the left and usually are the basis for liberal primary challenges.
*** Afghanistan review is out: “And speaking of Afghanistan, the president's review of the war is out. The New York Times says it concludes "that American forces can begin withdrawing on schedule in July, despite finding uneven signs of progress in the year since the president announced the deployment of an additional 30,000 troops, according to a summary made public Thursday. The summary said the United States continues to kill leaders of Al Qaeda and diminish its capacity to launch terrorist attacks from the region. It cited some signs that the United States and its allies have halted or reversed inroads by the Taliban in Afghanistan and strengthened the ability of Afghan forces to secure their country, but acknowledged that the gains are fragile and could be easily undone unless more progress is made towards hunting down insurgents operating from havens in neighboring Pakistan."
*** House to vote on the tax deal: Turning to the remaining work on Capitol Hill, the House today is expected to vote on the tax-cut compromise after the Senate easily passed it by an 81-19 vote yesterday. The House will hold two votes, NBC’s Shawna Thomas reports. The first is on a "motion to concur" with everything in the Senate bill -- except for the estate-tax language. House Dems would establish a higher estate-tax rate than what the White House negotiated with Senate Republicans. If that vote fails, as expected, then the House would then take up a motion to concur with the original Senate language. If that passes, it would immediately proceed to the president for his signature. By the way, our poll shows that 59% approve of the tax-cut deal and 36% disapprove. What’s more, 61% believe the agreement was a fair compromise for both Obama and Republican leaders, while 23% think Obama gave up too much and 10% say Republicans gave up too much.
*** Biden on the tax deal: In an interview with NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Vice President Biden discussed the White House’s priorities in the tax deal. “So I had two dictates from the president. ‘Joe, one, make sure whatever you negotiate grows the economy next year.’ Every major econometric model points out the deal that I was asked to negotiate will increase the growth of the economy from 2.3 to 2.5 to 3.7 to 4. That means tens of thousands of -- millions of additional jobs, over a million additional jobs. Secondly, he said to me, ‘Joe, make sure our folks aren't hurt,’ meaning middle class and working class people. Guess what? Every one of the tax breaks they had, from college tuition to child care tax credit, which the Republicans opposed, is part of that deal. Every single tax break for middle class Americans has been preserved.”
*** Biden’s message on START: Also on Capitol Hill today, the Senate is expected to begin debate on New START. In the NBC/WSJ poll, 70% believe the Senate should approve this nuclear-arms reduction treaty. In his interview with Mitchell, Biden delivered this message to START opponents like GOP Sens. Jon Kyl and Jim DeMint: “Let the Senate vote. Overwhelming, the American people support the START treaty. Overwhelmingly, the United States Senate supports the START Treaty. It's clearly in our national interests. Every former national security adviser, secretary of defense, the secretary of state on the Republican Party from George Shultz to Colin Powell thinks it's essential we pass this treaty. Get out of the way. There's too much at stake for America's national security. And don't tell me about Christmas. I understand Christmas. I have been a senator for a long time. I've been there many years where we go right up to Christmas.”

With much of the hoola baloo about this Tax Item and that Economic Discipline, many members of Congress have put most their bargaining chips in to the pot with bluffs and hands that are not worth a lot of play or at least calling on in big pots.
Republithugs have a pair of Jacks, Democrats have a pair of Kings, Far Right Wingers have Queen Jack Suited Connectors (spades), Far Left Wingers have Big Slick and President Obama is playing in a pair of deuces (symbolizing 2 parties). The stakes are high and the atmosphere is full on anxiety for many at the table because everyone believes their hand is the best.
The Flop is Jack Spades, Ace Diamonds, 3 Clubs…
The Republithugs have raised with half their chips forcing the Far Right Wingers to follow suit. The other parties call.
The Turn is a 2 of Spades giving the President Three of a Kind and the Far Right Wingers a Flush Draw.
Knowing that it is an opportunity to double up with the chances of winning, the Democrats are playing all in.
President Obama knows his chance of winning is slim, but recognizing the odds of all cards being high, all parties having the same hands (no one having low cards), he calls their bluffs.
The Republithugs and Far Right Wingers, never wanting to be beaten, call.
The River is the other deuce (diamond) and the President is drawing all the chips to his stack.
Listen, never fear what is in the stack, nor the opponent, fear yourself. But if you have enough courage in yourself and your abilities, you can win any hand. Don't be a Donk.

i agree;
The Tax Cut Deal has passed the Senate on its final vote and is on the way to the House for final approval for the Presidents signature. While I do not like this Bill, nor do I like my country being extorted by the right for their own political agenda the option of doing nothing is not an option at this stage of the game. Why do you suppose this Bill has such overwhelming support from the right? In my opinion it is not because the right supports the Middle Class. In the long run this bill is going to change America and not for the good. There are some serious issues raised by this bill for many years to come. See below:
The deal is a back door attack on Social Security. Once you give a tax cut, in this case a 2% Payroll Tax Cut against SS, it is hard to raise them back and the republicans know this all too well. Republicans have been coming after Social Security for years and this cut is the biggest threat to the vital program in decades. If this is allowed to extend beyond the one year as proposed it will do significant harm to the life expectancy of Social Security without the government stepping in and changing something.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/08/tax-cut-deal-a-hidden-thr_n_793983.html
Some lower income Americans may actually see a tax increase not a reduction. This may be a problem generated by swapping the “Working for Pay” tax cut for the 2% reduction is Social Security Payroll Tax for many Americans.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/10/obamarepublican-deal-coul_n_795187.html
The deal has not one but two tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.
In addition to extending all the Bush income tax breaks for the top 2%, the deal will slash the estate tax. If Congress did nothing, next year the estate tax would be 55% and apply to everyone inheriting $1 million or more. But the deal reduces it to 35% and only people who inherit more than $5 million will have to pay. This second bailout will give a gigantic tax giveaway to a few thousand of the richest families in the country and add hundreds of billions to the national debt. These tax cuts are going to be one of the major issues for 2012. The republicans will use the same arguments in 2012 that they are using today. Are we going to be held hostage again and again for the foreseeable future? You can bet on it at it will be worse.
http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/Tax-VOX/2010/1207/Estate-tax-deal-worst-part-of-a-bad-tax-compromise
Unemployment help is insufficient and inadequate.
While the deal extends unemployment benefits for another 13 months for people currently receiving it, millions of unemployed workers who've struggled the most and been out of work more than 99 weeks—since the giant Wall Street banks wrecked the economy—will get no help at all under the deal. And as reported this week by MSM, Wall Street is on a path of another stellar year in bonuses to their top people. What is wrong with this picture?
http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/Latest-News-Wires/2010/1207/Unemployment-benefits-Extension-won-t-help-99ers
Tax giveaways to the rich are a terrible way to create jobs and stimulate the economy. Just about every leading economist both republican and democrat say that tax cuts to the richest 2% do not create a lot of jobs nor does it get back into the economy. For the most part they save the extra tens of thousands of dollars, and this will continue in the future because the right will use their hostage tactics at every election cycle to keep these cuts. They will be yelling “Tax Increase” every chance they get.

And lets not forget that this bill is going to add about a Trillion Dollars to the deficit. People, there is not a politician democrat or republican that is fiscally responsible anymore. When they talk about lowering the deficit, as they will come election time, I am not going to believe them without some major proof now. I want to see their record that lends proof to their rhetoric now and I suggest that we all hold these people responsible to the highest degree possible.

Put me in the mix too. I so agree with you and LouisJ.
However, with the new polls suggesting the public trusts President Obama more than the Republicans and Congress, this does give President Obama a chance to throw all of the GOP/TEA BAGGER obstructionism back in their faces when that time comes.
Thanks Bev. LouisJ makes several good points. We, as a nation, are in some serious trouble. Neither party seems to see this since they are so entrenched in keeping their jobs instead of governing and moving this country forward. It can only come back and bite us - "Big Time".
LouisJ - As an old Texas Holdem Player, I loved your post. Gave me lots of smiles. Thanks.
"the President is drawing all the chips to his stack."
Louis, you just keep telling yourself that.
Louis has proven my theory of Liberalism. It's a serious mental illness that gets worse ("progresses") the longer you suffer from it. That's why I always LMAO when lefty liberals refer to themselves as "progressives". I interpret it as them describing the nature of the mental illness they suffer from.
LMAO!!!!
Louis is not playing with a full deck.
This is all wonderful news. I believe and have always believed and said so many times on this board an others, that Barack Obama is going to go down in history as one of the greatest American Presidents.
He inherited a mess. Worse than Lincoln, worse than Roosevelt. He has successfully navigated those treacherous waters by doing the right thing, not the political thing, as evidenced by last months elections.
He's in it for the long haul and by the beginning of 2012 we'll see our troops coming home, our economy booming and one of the greatest landslide re-election victories in November 2012 of any American President.
This is only the beginning. Let the good times roll.
I have seen TEN American Presidents come and nine go in my lifetime. Some were good. Some were unlucky and some were down-right disasterous but I think Barack Obama is the best of the lot. I have NEVER, in 60 years, felt so strongly about an American President as I feel about Barack Obama.
Ok, let the right wing nay-sayers and pot-stirrers start with their nasty little comments about the koolaid I'm drinking or the funny stuff I'm smoking. Let them call me deranged or my good friend Bob 18 can tell me once again I'm Moronic and "not very good at this."
I do not care. I do not base my opinions on the judgement of others.
You Go Mr. President. Obama/Biden, 2012, because it's working for America
Louis, I stopped reading after "republithugs". If you didn't resort to childish name calling, I'd be more willing to listen to what you have to say.
Yes yes, great post! Hear here and all that. Nice links of libbie sources. And the 4 or 5 twisting of words to make the word republicans sound silly was spot on!
I agree with you skip, Obama and Biden gotta go in 2012. I don't see how maintaining the status quo qualifies him as "one of the greatest presidents".
@skip
Really? Worse than Lincoln and Roosevelt (I presume you mean FDR not TR). Hyperbole. Can you in anyway justify this statement or is the usual rhetoric that surrounds this president?
Navy, Others,
I can understand why you hate the rich so much. It seems you think it okay to tax people, even after they are dead. What gives this government the right to do that? Especially from someone who has spent their entire lives paying income, sales, & property taxes.
You all complain about the deal, the wealthy don't have to pay 3% more in taxes, whoopie, the poor don't have to pay 5% more in taxes. And none of us have to pay that extra 10% in capital gains taxes. Heck right there, anyone saving some money just saved 10%. And then you cry about someone might have to pay a little more in taxes, because of the 2% cut in Social Security & the lose of a tax credit. The way you all think, you should be happy about that, the government will have some extra money next year, and it makes up for them not paying their taxes last year, considering that 47% didn't pay taxes last year, but still got to use the roads, got protected by our military, and probably got some social services. Now that is really fair.
Take, Take, Take, & complain. Come up with a solution on your own and don't keep thinking the government should take care of you.
Oh BigBear, where's your holiday spirit?
Don't you know that it's better to take from those that can and do than to give them any incentive?
No wait, I got that wrong, it's better to receive "entitlements" than to give into the system that provides them.
I got that wrong as well. Well poop. I'm no good at being a liberal.
Skip-what have you been smokin? Greatest President? Good night nurse I would hate to see the worst. And don't give me the line of blaming Bush-blah, blah. He promise to creat jobs, unemployment at close to 10%-check. More jobs-still waiting-check. He did pass Health Care-at taxpayers expense-check. Ending American war effort-still going on-check. Close G. Bay-still open-check. Hope and change-none of that-check.
He's great alright more BS from BO.
Morning all - Great day to be a Dem! (Love it when the House and Senate pass different stuff on the same day, and then just swap! Nancy and Harry are racing to see which gets to the Prez 1st!)
PLEASE stop talking about the debt...it's a NON-issue in economic times such as these. Not a small issue - a NON-issue. Stop channeling Herbert "Me-and-my-republican-buddies-caused-the Great-Depression-by-worrying-too-much-about-the-debt-in-a-downturn" Hoover !!!
Alan, the answer to your question is obvious.
No.
They are in love with the idea of Obama. Like ten year old girls are in love with the idea of the newest boy- band member. It has gotten really, really old.
The only reason it's not a full deck is because I'm married. But hey, I love my wife and she usually holds the cards. I just keep the ace up my sleeve.
There's nothing childish about the term Republithugs. I just learn from what they teach. Besides, I like to tap into my childish side every once in a while, it reminds me to keep a clear perspective on things.
President Obama will be celebrated by historians as a pragmatic promise keeper. Let's just put it this way, he's doing what any president would do to help a people. He is also doing what is necessary to keep America as "the" Superpower.
As of now, history will be good to the president. And the policies he is developing will indicate a good future.
Why is this even called a tax break? If the taxes remain the same it isn't a break, it's not raising them. So they have voted not to raise taxes in a recession.
And 87% of African Americans support Obama????? NOW WHO are the racist ones?
Skip, thanks for your thoughts. I agree with you.
One of the reasons we are progressives is that we believe in "progress". In advancing the agenda of the country. By definition, conservatives are unwilling to try new things, even when they might be good.
A lot of the reaction I see seems to be fear or not understanding. I don't say this to be condescending.
This country was founded on being different. Let's hope we never lose that spirit.
Chef,
I was in the holiday spirit a couple of days back, thinking, "we finally have some compromise" in our government. Did I like it, not all of it--extending unemployment benefits--but hey, not to have my taxes go up was worth the compromise.
Then all this dribble about the wealthy--who do pay in 80% of the government dollars--can't have a break. Then the crying about the estate taxes--another wonderful government program--that the government can't get enough of your money--so when you die, they can get even more. What a croc?
Then they complain about the debt--the rich should pay for that, because our government overspent? Hey, they need to donate to the debt relief. I did--I sent in an extra $100. I bet none on here did. Since last year we only got $2,840,466.75 in donations to pay off the debt. I can't believe that Warren Buffet couldn't even donate $1 Billion dollars, considering the money he has, and he is willing to tax himself more--just as long as he doesn't have to pay--tied up in charity funds.
So much for holiday spirits.
Louis,
I guess every single day would fall into the set of "once in an while".
But I completely agree with Jesse, I stop reading after the first childish jab.
Bear,
I completely agree. It makes no sense that libs want to punish people for being successful.
I think you should turn in your royal flush louisj. if you think by presenting a card game betwen the 2 parties is the way to breakdown what is really going on here... the dems are so pissed off that the boy wonder is caving to anything GOP...what ?? the party of NO?? remember all the those so call leaders are millionaries...INCOME TAX what you make..people that have millions have money, they dont have jobs that pay millions..we pay because we work....or serve our country
Gee just a year ago...the GOP was dead.....i dont think so ......your dem butts got thrown out of office for supporting your phoney card game the JOker got caught.. your heads are still spinning....no more bragging on how to lead the country....the GOP, I will admitt not any better....its a push.....
Wow, look at all the kooky posts. Everyone of them predictable. I should have written down a more comprehensive list of the negativity I was expecting.
#1. When I say, "You go, Mr. President" that's colloquial English for "Keep up the good work" But you knew that.
#2. Justify my remark about him facing a mess worse than Lincoln or FDR? Gladly. Lincoln inherited a country only moderately more polarized than we are right now. He inherited a constitutional crisis and the apparent dissolution of the United States which resulted in Civil War. Bad. Very Bad. But economically the country was strong and the North won the war and saved the Union.
#3. FDR inherited the Great Depression. Very bad. In the midst of his second term he was faced with World Wide War. Again, very bad. But the war was on foreign soil, not the continental US. The war actually helped end the last vestiges of the Depression when the country shifted to a war economy. Happy days were here again. We helped the allies win the war. The American economy was booming and we were the good guys once again.
Barack Obama inherited a country already engaged in TWO, unwinnable and unjustified wars and an economic crisis unparalelled in US history. Our economy was in free-fall and it looked like we were facing a collapse of the world's economies. Plus, he presided over an electorate that hasn't been this polarized since the American Civil War. On top of all that he faced something that neither Lincoln or Roosevelt had to deal with. Rabid Right Wing news media in the form of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck et al and their daily hate propaganda and twisting of the facts. NO American President has EVER had to deal with ALL THAT on their first day on the job. You try it and see how you do.
So I stand by my comment. I truly believe he will go down in history not as just the "First Black President" but as one of the greatest American Presidents, who pulled us back from the financial precipice and the two ill-conceived wars he inherited from the previous administration.
He is a good man, doing a good job.
Too bad you can't bring yourself to realize and appreciate the good work he is doing. But that's your problem.
Obama/Biden, 2012 Because we deserve the very best!
If we survive two more years of the current failed policies of this administration why in the hell would anyone want 4 more years?
DW you get an "F" for your comment. C'mon, it's Christmas. Say something nice about President Obama for once. Make a POSITIVE comment about our President and our country.
Merry Christmas
Now Skip,
Hate to take away from you remarks, Your opinion is noted, not always agreed with about the President.
As for FDR, the war for the United States started in 1941--which would have been FDR's 3rd term. Now the actual war in Europe started on September 1, 1939 with the invasion of Poland. Up until that time, other European nations had appeased Hitler & the Germans. Which the US wasn't part of--although once the actual war in 1939 started--the US started coming out of the depression faster, because we were building weapons for the allies.
But really just wanted to clarify that the war started during FDR's 3rd term for the US.
Skip, it'll never happen.
As bad as it gets? Here's the clear conclusion from our new NBC/WSJ poll: If the current political environment for President Obama has hit rock bottom, then his prospects for re-election are quite good.
So says the liberal media. They will say or do anything to keep their boy wonder ahead of the curve. Unsuspecting idiots (i.e. liberals) will buy this with their last penny.
Notice who they put up against Obama... Sarah Palin - the liberals worst nightmare. The assumption that Sarah Palin will be up against Obama in 2012 is completely off base. She may try to run, but she won't get the republican nod. It ain't gonna happen. She's unelectable at this point in time. Although, it would be just like the Republican party to give her the seat only to let her lose to Obama. Hard core republicans hate her as much as liberals because she's a threat to their power. The Tea Party is hated by hard core republicans for the same reason. So liberals, join the ranks of hard core republicans if you must. You seem to enjoy the same hatreds.
If Obama is cast against Mitt Romney, I don't give Obama much of a chance. That race would be very interesting to watch... at least with the hope that a true businessman would take the reigns of the economy and put Americans back to work.
Louis, you are an idiot. Biden is a plaigirist who makes fine comments like telling people you need an Indian accent to shop at 7-Eleven, and saying that Russia is a 2nd world country. You simply do not say things like that if you're a leader. Obama is not bringing us back from a financial precipice....he has no plans to pay back the "stimulus" money whatsoever. He's just as fiscally irresponsible as his predecessor, Bush. It's amazing how dumb people like you really are, who can't objectively look at leaders and get away from the "one party is right, the other is wrong" mentality. And BTW, the left wing news media twists the story just as much as the right wing media....you're just too dumb to understand that.
"This country was founded on being different. Let's hope we never lose that spirit."
Fielden- I agree, but I believe the term the right uses to say the same thing is 'exceptional'.
Obama is so ineffective that he will not even survive the Democratic primaries. Their candidte in 2012 will be Hillary Clinton.
Name calling, shoving 2,000 page spending bills through with no time to read them, playing games with backroom deals on bills relevant to our future, and shutting out over half the population on decisions that affect their own wallets.
Yeah, the left didn't get the message in November. The Tea Part already came out swinging against the Republicans who added pork to the bill. What's the left doing? Name calling and supporting business as usual from their candidates again? Wow.
While I like Mr. Obama, his policies are nothing short of an incredible example of what failures (and the best of intentions) come together to form.
So, he's not done falling--not by a long shot. I recommend that Obama not hold his breath.
the dnc needs to give chuck todd a raise, that guy could spin anything into obama's favor. For starters, the big o isn't in that bad of shape, so to make the claim that he is just so he can then show o's triumph is marketing genius.
keep it going, chuck, you're always good for a laugh!
But as usual the dems miss read their cards because as they take a second look they see 7 2 off suit. Then try and sneek pocket aces out of their sleeves but get caught. Any thoughts of re-election just went down the toilet. lol
Louis,
Real cute little fantasy about poker and what a great player Obama is.
How about a little reality. Obama campaigned against earmarks / pork spending. Last month Obama said:
"I agree with those Republican and Democratic members of Congress who've recently said that in these challenging days, we can't affford what are called earmarks."
Congress just dealt $1.1 Trillion omnibus with about 6,500 earmarks. You think Obama is going to call them on this?
I'm betting Obama does a gutless fold.
Obama hasn't got a prayer of living on Penn. Ave. after Jan. 2013. He couldn't be elected dog catcher. I love how the liberal media keeps pumping up Palin. She's an idiot, with ZERO chance of getting the nomination, but keep hoping and dreaming fools.
The republican, whomever that will be, will CRUSH Obama. What part of this past November do you think is not going to happen again in 23 months?? Obama is flat out OVER HIS HEAD and many "progressives" know this, as do I.
Tell me how you really feel Tom. With all the hate from the Right Wingers today, I don't see any light hearted warm and fuzzy Christmas Spirit in the room. What's up with that?
Republithug Bah Hum Buggery is no different than TEA Baggery except you substitute TEA with Sour Egg Nog. And that will definitely leave a stink in the room. Pewwwwww.
:^)
Feilden
What this country was founded on is nothing like the agenda being pushed right now. The first statement says it all.
We have the right to freedom and the pursuit of happiness. Not the right to freedom and all the happiness you want because you think you deserve it.
In fact the fears our founding fathers had about what could happen to this system has already happened. It was never designed to take care of people. It was designed to give you the ability and freedom to make your own choices. Not have government mandate to the people what they should and should not have.
Skip - Obama wanted the job... He campaigned with the very essence of his soul... He could taste the victory during campaigning. He probably would have ended up in a mental institution if he didn't win.
What you are saying is he inherited a bad economy. Did he know this going in? Wasn't he aware of the bad economy as he was campaigning? Was he in a vaccum? I know, he never got the memo.
If he didn't want the inheritance, he should have stopped his campaign.
To blame problems on a previous administration is childish. Especially when a person knowingly wants the position. You can blame Bush for anything you want, but Obama is in charge and he's screwing up royally. He doesn't know how to fix the problems. His efforts are sophomoric at best. He's a Hollywood wannabe sitting in a seat of power and he doesn't know how to handle it. He's never made a worthy decision in his life concerning business, the economy or probably his own personal finance... Michelle controls that in their marriage.
So... In all your attempts to transfer blame to the previous president, including your BDS, there are those of us who actually think. We see through the BS and readily admit that your support for the man is blind since you can't see that Obama wanted the job and you were so eager to give it to him. Now that his actions are totally inedpt and he is making things worse, you try to convince everyone, including yourself that he's doing a good job. Let me tell you... he's not.
Love all these libs posting info from far left wing made up news media out lets and believe everything they say as facts. Their mental illness will never end......
Man talk about limited capacities... I can only speculate if someone can't think for their own self, it's just as easy to collapse the other point of view. If someone can't debate with coherent thought, then just silence the voice of reason. That's the Right Wingers agenda for our liberties, silence independent and original thought. SMH. Truly priceless.
This will no doubt be due to current data and the rest of recorded history being filed in the "Memory Hole"
Big bear is your agenda to work toward abolishing the16 amendment?
@Skip
So much I'll just go through your points one-by-one. You receive predicable response because you know you threw out an inflammatory claim. If I claimed George W. Bush was the greatest president in my opinion I would expect predicable responses so please do not try and diminish the responses you have received.
Are you seriously equating the political rhetoric currently occurring, a dialog followed by democratic elections which all have accepted the result, with the path to a civil war which killed over 600,000 Americans. If so I seriously question your perspective.
On FDR. Even this administration have stopped claiming that the current recession is not comparable to the great depression. If you are conflating the wars in in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Second World War then you are a fool (I apologize for name calling) the equivalent to Dick Cheney. The Second World War was an extensional threat to the USA whereas only Cheney and a few right wing fools make a similar claim regarding the current war on terror. In the case of Afghanistan , the war was justifiable but I agree is now unwinable in any logical sense. However, here you undercut your hyperbole as candidate Obama campaigned on increasing troops in Afghanistan. As to the world falling, it appears that TARP was a success along with the actions taken by the Fed (although why foreign banks were given the credit terms is beyond me).
A final note on the stimulus, one of the points made by the administration is that things would be worse if not for the spending. They also claim that the Bush tax cuts did not create any jobs. OK, I now claim that the Bush tax cuts SAVED 50 million jobs. I have statistics or provable economic model to back up this claim but it seems as reasonable as the claims made for ARRA.
Finally if really think the media attacks at present are bad go read some history or start reading the UK tabloids.
It should pointed out that this election will truly indicate the intelligence level of this country and how much they truly want change. BO has truly horrible ratings on everything that has to do with his job and yet will probably get reelected. Why? Because he is charismatic, didn't realize that was such an important quality for the man who is supposed to be leading our country. Great thing to base a voting decision on. He has done nothing he said he would do, he hasn't changed squat, he hasn't brought our troops home. Exactly what has this guy that is supposed make people think he is one of the greatest presidents ever?
Someone said he was a better president than Lincoln, really? Do you remember who passed the Emancipation Plocamation? Better than Roosevelt? Do you remember the New Deal that brought us out of the Great Depression? Heck, BO hasn't even been able to get us out of the Great Recession. Greatest President ever, hardly.
Louis - sorry for the direct approach, but Shut Up! Stop the crap about right wingers wanting to shut down opposing voices. For all we know it was you that pressed the report exclamation point just to blame it on someone else.
Geeeez... get a grip.
I am against anyone shutting down the first in a series of posts. Newsvine should remove that option and leave a report memo for the moderator only. If the post is that offensive the moderator should be able to remove that post and shift everyone elses up a notch. It's disrupting to posters to find an entire thread collapsed because a few idiots have to click on the inflammatory button. If you disagree with a post, you have the option to state your reasons for disagreement in a post of your own.
DAN-1776785:
"And 87% of African Americans support Obama????? NOW WHO are the racist ones?"
It is racist to support someone who happens to be of the same race. Are you serious?
African Americans overwhelmingly supported Bill Clinton because he supported their interest. The same can be said of Barack Obama.
Why would African Americans support the Tea Party when a large segment of the movemnet wants to take the country back to pre-civl rights and even slavery!
Really.
African Americans are not monolithic so not all are supporters of Barack Obama but contrary to what was recently released on the Nixon tapes they are not stupid either.
Sheila MD - I disagree that the blacks supported Obama because he was black. The reason they supported him was because he was a democrat. Color didn't play any part in his win. If color played a part, he would have never been elected considering that blacks are a minority race in this country.
Your statement about the Tea Party is not true. There is no large segment of the movement that wants to take this country back to pre-civil rights and slavery. I don't know where you got your information, but you are repeating a falsehood. The Tea Party wants to eliminate those progressive agenda enactments that are contrary to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They are for lower taxation, smaller government and freedom for all citizens. They are not the boogyman as the democrats and high ranking republicans would have you believe.
Have you ever looked into what the Tea Party stands for or are you only following democrat talking points that are against anything the democrat party stands for?
You seem like a fairly intelligent person. Biased, but intelligent none the less. It might serve you well to look into the truth behind the Tea Party movement and what they really do stand for. I've read your posts many times and pretty much understand where you are coming from. Please interject some reason into your thinking... being blind to one party makes you a slave to that party. That's why I decided a few years ago to change my Republican status to No Party Affiliation. I am a true independent.
Sheila- a definition of racist is to use race as a determining factor for superiority over other races. If 87% support Obama, then it's safe to say that they are supporting him due to his race. Therefore making them racists by supporting someone due to their race. Especially when the national average has him at much lower than 87%. If it was 60% I could accept that it wasn't due to his skin color, but the high percentage makes it overwhelmingly obvious. If you'd like to live in denial, then that's your option.
Didn't mean to make you upset chief. Don't take it so personal.
Hey, I'll take your racism and raise it a bigot to the ignorance that many Right Wingers espouse based on their lack of knowledge for cultural differences. The majority Right Wing TEA Drinkers don't like the man because he's black and to deny that is to be no different.
Denounce the Republithug Hate machine please. And if you can't force yourself to do that, then at least put on your hood so that we know who's in the room. SMH.
From the article:
Uh, what's difference? You could even separate consevatives into fiscal and social conservatives. But they are all in the GOP tent (along with white supremacists -- you know, the folks who say "Obama wants health care reform to help black people", Birthers, etc.). All the Tea Party candidates ran as Republican. Republicans who have registered as Independent or Libertarian still vote Republican.
The question now is who will be held responsible for the addition of over $800 billion to the deficits originallycaused by two unfunded wars (1 trillion), Bush's tax cuts (3 trillion, now 4 trillion over ten years), and the bail-outs (TARP passed during Bush)? I suspect FOX/Hate Radio/viral right-wing E-mail etc., along with GOP leaders (emotionally unstable Boehner, McCain, et al) will try to blame Dems, and the ignorant Republicans who watch FOX "news" will fall for it.
As for 2012, the article makes a good point that Republicans lack a popular candidate to run for president. So no matter how bad things look for Obama, who's going to challenge him? Campaign season is under way, so the pundits who say a lot can happen in two years are just strutting their usual hype.
Really, Dan. Are those 87% supporting President Obama because they believe there's something inherently superior about black people that makes it natural for them to rule over whites? If not then you're misusing the term "racist" in the way Conservatives always do, in what's been a calculated effort to destroy the meaning of the word.
If you look a little deeper you'll find that blacks ALWAYS support Democratic presidents and presidential candidates at a rate of around 90%.
Salt Grass,
I could live with the 16th amendment being repealed. Would not hurt my feelings.
That would bring about fair taxation on everyone, not on their earnings but on their spending.
What people don't seem to understand something about SS taxes is this, that money belongs to Congress. It was set up that way since it's inception during FDR's administration. Congress does what it sees fit to do with it, and only allows some of it to go back to the tax payer. The original hand bill promoting the program stated that in so many words in fine print at the bottom. Also, just because a guy is likable or personable does not qualify him to run our country. A great many people that thought John, and Ronnie, and Jimmy, and Bill were great guys, but each of them managed to piss of a lot of other people. The only one in office that there was a general consensus on, was that every body hated Richard Nixon. For better or worse, he was a real politician. Nixon, and especially Barry Goldwater would have never put up with the crap that's going on in the middle east right now, and I'd be hard pressed into being convinced that either of them would have had anything to do with a 9/11 conspiracy. Obama's handling of the situation in the middle east has been clumsy at best, and just because the democrats came to terms on this budget thing doesn't mean he should seek a second term. I know one thing, Palin has got to go. Her Ted Kopple approach of pulling on the heart strings of America by suggesting that if she thinks a certain way, shouldn't you too? A blind man could see through her B.S. I thought that Jr. was dangerous the first time I set eyes on him, Palin is an order of magnitude worse. "W" has been de-throaned as the king of stupid remarks, and Palin did it all on her own.
John, you are absolutely correct. I may have jumped the gun in my opinion of African American support as a whole. The ones that I have spoken with feel that he can do no wrong based on an association of race. And they feel he is unfairly targeted. But you are correct and I admit my mistake to jump to the conclussion so quickly. I'd like to see a study on it.
Dan, I don't have a lot of time to look for detailed numbers across multiple campaigns, but they're out there. Here http://www.gallup.com/poll/107110/obamas-support-similar-kerrys-2004.aspx is a Gallup poll showing that black support for Barack Obama in 2008 was very similar to black support for John Kerry in 2004. The same is true of black support for Clinton and Gore as well.
I don't see Trump mentioned anywhere. There is a large contingent of very influential people trying to get him to run and he is finally seriously considering it. It would be worth electing him just for the sheer fun of watching the inept thieves and liars in congress having to deal with him.
Aye Skeem ese!! Yes I'm cleaver, I'm more cleaver than a butcher's knife. HAHAHAHA!!! SMDH
That's clever genius. And to respond to your snide whackadoodle comment (what's a trougher anyway?), I'm just your average Joe (no ref to the plumber) trying to make his way through this thing called life. Doesn't have anything to do with wits.
Sorry I'm in a good mood because I just got off work for a long weekend... hmmm, I think I'll go wait for a handout.
obama hasn't hit rock bottom yet ,but he will. The election in 2 years will be like the election last year. The ameican people are tired of progressives. We are a center right country not a far left country.
'His lowest marks come on the professional side: being a good commander-in-chief (41%), achieving his goals (33%), uniting the country (30%), and changing Washington (24%). Bottom line: The jury's still out on whether the president is going to be successful or not, as over 40% tell us it's STILL too soon to judge what kind of president Obama is going to be.
In other words, he's got a likeable personality, but makes a lousy leader and President.
As bad as it gets. President Obama's poll numbers remain where they have been for over a year; this is a clear reflection of the economy's slow recovery.
Pawlenty compares health care to drug dealers. Now, that's just stupid. Apparently, health care is a privilege to Pawlenty and only those Americans who can afford to buy it, deserve to live healthy and productive lives--more GOP Death Panels.
Palin heads to the "lame stream media", most likely the plummeting sales of her latest book written by someone else means she must promote it to all America, not just FOX viewers.
Romney will have the same problem in 2012 that he had in 2008. Evangelicals do not trust his religion, he passed HCR in Massachusetts with a mandate which is according to Pawlenty, like dealing drugs.
Hypocrisy Mindset Continues. Senators Cornyn and Thune held a press conference with much hand wringing about the pork-laden, earmarked-loaded Appropriations Bill. They absolutely cannot support it because it is full of pork. One astute reporter pointed out that both these men had millions of dollars in ear marks in the bill (Thune, 32; Cornyn 53). Well, Cornyn explained, we voted not long ago to ban earmarks--we put those in earlier this year. A reporter suggested stripping out their earmarks. A flustered Cornyn explained, we're going to vote against the bill so it doesn't matter. Reporters continued to challenge these two fine legislators who speak with forked tongue. The truth is, if Cornyn and Thune remove their earmarks and the bill passes which it likely will at some point, they'll lose millions of dollars for their states. Rewrite for Cornyn and Thune: we will remove our earmarks and will be asking all republicans to remove theirs because we intend to stand by our "vote" and the promise we made to ban earmarks. Don't hold your breath on the Rewrite.
Republican Senators stated that no other Senate business would be considered until the tax cut extension was passed. Well, it passed the Senate 81 to 19. Unfortunately, their hypocrisy continues because now they have moved the goal posts. It is Christmas and it is sacrilegious to expect these privileged, fine, upstanding legislators to do anything more; how dare Senator Reid tell them they aren't done yet; how dare Senator Reid point out that if they had not delayed, denied, obstructed for the last year, everyone could go home. How offensive and disrespectful Senators Kyl and DeMint must sound to the millions of Americans who will be working not just the next eight days before but also Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day and the days after. How offensive and disrespectful Senators Kyl and DeMint must sound to the many thousands of military personnel stationed in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere protecting these fine gentlemen so they can have two weeks off at Christmas. Perhaps Senate Republicans (and any democrats who might also whine) need a reminder that the only privilege they have is the privilege of doing the business of the People who pay their salaries.
Representative Mike Pence declared he could not vote for the tax cut extension, it is a bad deal for the taxpayers. Wonder which taxpayers he is referring to; I doubt it was the middle and lower income earners.
But Pawlenty assures us all that, in spite of the numbers in MN, we darn well should fund that new stadium for the Vikings. Always perplexed at the priorities.
Will the new stadium come with a giant sno-brush?
Um, Jody? You left something out.
Yes, McConnell and Boehner sent a letter to the leadership that stated that nothing would be considered until their agenda items were considered.
Those items were the tax cut extensions, and a continuing resolution to fund the government through January.
You kind of forgot about that, did you not?
Note that what was mentioned was a continuing resolution, not an omnibus spending bill. If democrats had wanted to shape the budget, they should have done so, not punted until after the mid terms so that they would not have the additional albatross of a budget hanging around their necks during the election season.
Perhaps the threat of shutting down the government will have enough impact that the democrats finally understand that they lost, big time, last month.
Yep, we were all so scared of THAT threat, NJ. After all, it came back and bit in the, well, you know, the last time. Or am I wrong and Newtie is still Speaker?
No Joe, that was what the compromise was about.
How are Boehner and McConnell going to explain to their constituents that:
One, they compromised when they said they would stand firm;
Two, they spent money they didn't have when they said they wouldn't;
Three, they added pork when they said they would stop;
Four, they stalled the congress from considering several pieces of legislation when they said they would listen to the people and do the business of government?
You keep saying that the Democrats lost seats in the election by not listening. What do you call what the Republicans are doing now?
Well, No Joe, at least you didn't bring up the UK, Gordon Brown and David Plouffe. Yes, McConnell sent a blackmail letter signed by every republican to the President the very next morning after praising their meeting with the President, stressing to journalists their willingness to work together--how's that for the bi-partisan spirit. One other thing, it wasn't democrats who postponed all this stuff, it was the GOP Senate Blockade who filibustered, delayed, denied and all manner of waiting out the clock.
Now, I intend to move on and enjoy the thoughtful and factual comments liberals and a few conservatives post rather than read the condescending comments of the daily anti-Obama ranters.
come one msn, quit collapsing everything just because a couple weenies complain, how about looking at what is said, if there's nothing racist/sexist or some other ist, let the replies handle it. keep the discussion going instead of thwarting it. thanks, happy holidays
So Jody, does this mean you are going to stick your head back in the sand now?

Forget Tea Party rhetoric - pork barrel politics is back
By Dana Milbank
Wednesday, December 15, 2010; 8:00 PM
Dear Tea Party voter: You've been had
When the good people of South Dakota voted last month to send Republican Kristi Noem to Congress, they probably believed that she would give no quarter to the lobbyists and special interest groups who enjoyed, as she put it, "throwing money at the feet of a member of Congress."
But since she defeated Democratic Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (in part by making an issue of Herseth Sandlin's marriage to a lobbyist), Noem has hired her new chief of staff from . . . a lobbying firm! And on Tuesday afternoon, she was the guest of honor at a "Meet & Greet" with Washington high-rollers at the powerhouse lobbying firm Barbour Griffiths Rogers.
It was probably inevitable that the Tea Party activists would be betrayed, but the speed with which congressional Republicans have reverted to business-as-usual has been impressive.
House Republican leaders rejected a Tea Party-backed candidate as the new chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, instead installing Hal Rogers of Kentucky, who is known as the "Prince of Pork" and who once said pork is a "bad word for making good things happen."
Many Tea Party favorites, meanwhile, have discovered the appeal of Washington lobbyists' cash and advice. South Dakota's Noem is one of at least 13 incoming Republican lawmakers who have hired lobbyists to run their offices.
And the parties continue. Rep.-elect Steven Palazzo (R-Miss.), for example, told supporters on his campaign Web site: "I intend to take our voice and shout it loudly to the Washington, D.C., bureaucrats and politicians to make sure they know that we want legislation reflective of true conservatism. I will make you proud."
And how, exactly, is he making his constituents proud so far? On Tuesday night, he was scheduled to be the beneficiary of a dinner fundraiser at the Republican National Committee's Capitol Hill Club. Checks - $500 for individuals and $1,000 for political action committees - are to be made payable to Steven Palazzo for Congress - and mailed to an address not in Mississippi but in Alexandria, Va.
Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), the incoming chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said last week that "Washington and the regulators are there to serve the banks." And those naive Tea Partyers thought Washington was supposed to serve the taxpayers!
But is there nobody who will keep faith with the Tea Party voter? Even Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), a darling of the movement, is going wobbly. First, she dropped her bid for a leadership position in the House when it became clear she wouldn't win. Then she raised questions about the House GOP's plan to ban "earmark" spending on pet projects. The woman who once maintained that "all this pork is bad" told Politico recently that there must be a way to funnel infrastructure money to her district. "This isn't trying to be too cute by half of what is an earmark and what isn't," she said, "but we have to address the issue of how are we going to fund transportation projects across the country?"

You know I tried and tried to get you’ll youngsters to stay away from those little old Blond Home Wreckers with the dark roots down at the end of the bar at the Dew Drop Inn.
The ones with their tight little old red leather jackets and their short little old mini-skirts cut up to there and those artificially enhanced Hoo –Haas standing up so prominently.
Would you listen to the Old Man? Noooo
Now here you are. You’re fixing to wake up along about January 5th with your hair follicles so sore that you can’t put your hat on and a new appreciation for the definition of Double Coyote Ugly.
But being a patient Old Man and a general fine Human Being and Bon Viviante of some standing I’m going to pass on one more piece of advice for your continuing Conjugal Bliss.
Before you try to slink your Sorry Butt in the back door past that fine Lady who puts your groceries on the table right regular every evening you best make a stop down by the old Doc’s office and get him to load it up with shots of every kind of Anti-biotic known to man.
‘Cause if you pass on that Dose your carrying there ain’t going to be room for you and Old Blue in that little house in the back yard and it looks like the weather is going to be right cold till April.

Forget Tea Party rhetoric - pork barrel politics is back
Good Morning IR
It's interesting you chose the Tea party to write about. I was think about them too. Would you believe....
The completely insane Tea Party perhaps needs rehabilitative so they learn the purpose of the real Boston Tea Party.
In the late hours of Dec. 16, 1773, a band of Bostonians costumed as Native Americans slipped aboard three ships in the city's harbor and flung out 46 tons of tea into the waters below not british subjects.

While mainstream media has focus on the Tea Party’s anger it has failed to fully cover the of those their lack of knowledge and misplaced anger.
Tea Party candidates — now elected — have called for tax cuts for the richest Americans, even as they proposed a way to balance the budget by eliminating public education and the Department of Justice — both of which were created to ensure equal opportunity and protection under the law to every American. This is not love.
This is not faith.
The DREAM Act is Not Amnesty

Pay attention Republicans won the midterm elections, but they still haven’t won the public’s trust — a new Washington Post-ABC News poll says the public trusts President Obama marginally more than congressional Republicans to address the country’s problems,

Party Like its 1776: A Bogus Goal
Give it up MSNBC, Obama hasn't got a chance, if you learned even one thing from the mid-term elections that should have been it. It couldn't be more clear to the rest of America.
pjam09- I could not agree more with you. The funny thing about this article, is the fact that his highest marks in the polls have nothing to do with his job performance!
Jody, Your said it all there is nothing I can add to your statement it is very good and truthful. In all the years I worked which were a lot worked from 13 to 74 years, I can count on my two hands the amounts of Christmas's I had off. They can keep their anatomy in the houses and do the work that should have been done when they kept blocking and saying no. So they have to work sure feel sorry for them. Why did they put the pork in the bill in the first place they knew no pork was suppose to be there, fork toung.Merry Christmas to one and all and to those who are not Christians happy holidays.
This is hysterical!
The only ones who are buying this drivel are the hard core lefties that NEED to latch onto something "positive" about this clusterphuck of an administration.
The only thing that's worth printing is what comes after "If not"!
Of course you right-wing nutjobs are upset with this headline. You must have steam coming out of your ears and nose, your faces are turning green and you are apoplectic by now. Just who do you have that can challenge Obama in 2012. You got nobody! He's doing a fine job under the circumstances, whether you want to believe it or not. Go listen to Fixed Noise Channel, Glenn Blecccchh or Rush Limpbag, you'll feel better!! They live and love to lie and tell you what a failure he is and all you fools buy it, hook, line and sinker. It must be tough being stupid!
Amen Clint! This his positively hilarious - can you imagine MSNBC pitching this story for Pres Bush?
If anyone is left who believes for a moment that the main stream media is anything but a liberal propaganda machine, you are truly so blinded by your partisanship that you will never understand or recognize truth.
I'm sure Obama would have to agree with you.
BUT, it's gotten him this far!
PFFFTTTHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Gee Paul, Fox News and the Conservative talk shows all boast of having millions of viewers/listeners each week. The founder of Politico said "Drudge rules our world." Are they not part of the media?
Alright, what the hell is going on in Washington and the nation?
Two weeks ago, all Hannity and his guests could talk about was how the Bush Tax rates could NOT be allowed to expire, because it would amount to “the largest tax increase the country has ever known” (of course, as usual, he was full of sh*t…).
Yesterday, he had Pence and Bachmann on (AGAIN), and all the three of them could do was denounce this ‘monstrosity’ of a compromise, and proclaim it ‘unconstitutional’, in addition to being another incidence of Obama and congress ‘ignoring the will of the American people’. “the American people spoke on November 2nd, and they said NO” according to them (the American people were commenting on unemployment, I believe, and NOT extending Bush Tax rates, but then, you know Hannity- If he says it, it must automatically become fact). The last poll I saw said roughly 60% of the American people APPROVED of this extension. Ignoring the will of the people? Really??
SO- what the hell is going on here?
And while I’m on the ol’ soap box, can any of you tell me, Jon Kyle and De Mint if Jesus was ‘born-again’ on Dec 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th AND 31st? I’d hate to see congress work on his birthday. It would be sacreligious, somehow.
superlogi
I don't think they are cutting the Social Security tax on our paystub, just the federal payroll tax.
Economists I have read agree that extending unemployment benefits stimulates the economy because those folks spend every penny they get, whereas rich people tend to save, rather than spend, their tax "windfall," so I think Obama's tax policy will stimulate the economy and Social Security will be safe.
PS If cutting taxes for the wealthiest stimulated the economy, the economy would have boomed rather than busted during the Bush years. Cutting those taxes for the rich turned out to be very, very bad for the American economy overall.
Good Morning drive-by-observer

Last night on his Fox News show, Sean Hannity interviewed Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and expressed his outrage that Weiner wants the rich to pay more in taxes.
Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY): If you give a tax cut to Rupert Murdoch. — We got to borrow the money to pay Rupert Murdoch’s tax break. You want to do that?
HANNITY: Listen, thank God, you know why for Rupert Murdoch? — Rupert Murdoch is a job creator. Rupert Murdoch is a taxpayer, Rupert Murdoch donates to charity and more than you do Congressman.
WEINER: He’s a very fine man. He’s a very fine man but that is not the question. The question is, you want to give him a tax cut and borrow it from my kids, no deal. No deal.
HANNITY: You know what, thank God Rupert Murdoch created a job for me so, I could tell you, you’re taking way too much in spending too much of the taxpayers dollars.
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/12/15/weiner-hannity-murdoch-tax/
Yesterday, he had Pence and Bachmann on (AGAIN), and all the three of them could do was denounce this ‘monstrosity’ of a compromise, and proclaim it ‘unconstitutional’, in addition to being another incidence of Obama and congress ‘ignoring the will of the American people’. “
Michelle Bachmann is a dingbat who want Justice Scalia to help her teach Constitution class. She'll have a lot to hear from the people if this activist Supreme Court judge does.
Don't forget the latest GOP attempt to delay and obstruct ratification of the START treaty, and it comes on the back of Senator Tom Coburn’s (R-OK) threat to force the Senate clerk to read the entire 2,000-page omnibus appropriations bill.
Obviously it’s unfortunate and a colossal waste of time and political stunt used as (a new low) in putting stunts ahead of our national security.
Amy, I believe that Social Security is part of the payroll tax.
According to economists, the most stimulative thing in the compromise is unemployment insurance, followed by the payroll tax, followed by the Bush middle class tax cut. The least stimulative part of the compromise are the income tax and estate tax cuts for the rich. The useless beneficiaries of enormous estates like Paris Hilton won't be creating many jobs blowing the money they get partying on the French Riviera for months on end.
Social Security is part of the payroll tax forsure along with Medicare etc. that all employees pay. It Social Securit side has two parts, 6.2% that the employee pays and 6.2% that the employer pays. The 2% reduction, as I undrstand it, applies only to the employee portion and does not include the employer contribution. So now the employee for the next year will pay 4.2% (6.2 - 2 = 4.2%) and the employer still pays the 6.2%. That is how I understand it.
Last night on his Fox News show, Sean Hannity interviewed Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and expressed his outrage that Weiner wants the rich to pay more in taxes.
Bev - Just wanted to thank you. Last night while watching Hannity I took a bet that you would add this interview to you're daily yada, yada, yada! I won, 50.00 bucks!
Once again, thank you for being so predictable.
Navy,
I was just reading and you are correct, the people working get 2% savings. I thought at one time businesses were also, but cannot find that in the wording. For a family making $70K they will get an extra $1400 over the next year.
But the system needs to be reformed, we have talked about that prior.
DOB,
They shouldn't have to work on Christmas day, but they shouldn't leave Washington either. work on the 24th and the 26th. But not on the 25th. To bad they might have to work like the rest of us, on a daily basis.
Thank you Houston and US Navy Veteran for the info on the payroll tax cut lowering the Social Security tax on our pay stubs. You are both much smarter than me.
I googled the question after I read your posts and I found more info on the NPR website, the reporter was a John Yodst (I think that's how it's spelled.)
superlogi
You don't have to worry about the payroll tax cut depleting Social Security, because those funds are made up by taking money from the general revenue. Social Security gets funded, even if employees have less taken out of their paystubs. (Yippee!)
duggjr "that's right us middle class need the tax rates dropped even further to stimulate the economy,,we would be happy to spend it also and help produce more jobs, any problem with that liberal democrats?"
Liberals and Obama have no problem with low tax rates for the middle class. Studies show no econmic value for lowering the taxes of the wealthy because they save it, they don't spend it.
My nephew was on unemployment insurance for months and months last year. Luckily he had savings as well.
Thanks to unemployment benefits, he managed to keep up his mortgage payments, buy his kids' their sneakers, (they grow like weeds) and keep gasoline in the car while he looked for work. One less foreclosed house and a healthy family is no doubt good for the economy, don't you think?
Nothing new there. You're lucky if those folks are consistent in their message from one HOUR to the next, let alone 2 weeks apart. For Conservatives it's all about constructing a message to support whatever goal they have in mind at any given time. Consistency of thought isn't even a consideration.
I have an Idea why don't we just go to a flat tax but then you guys wouldn't have that to fight over, I'm guessing that's exactly what the politicians want so no one pays close attention to what they are doing to us
The little leftie lies never cease -
Under Bush, tax rates dropped, tax revenues WENT UP
Rasmussen survey 12/3 shows that a small number believe extending unemployment is wise, with a large % of people who believe it is a bad idea. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that nearly half (49%) of adults, in fact, think providing unemployment benefits for 99 weeks increases the number of people who remain unemployed. Just 28% disagree, while another 23% are not sure.
You can post all the lies you want, the fact is that most folks are just not buying your nonsense anymore, and Nov 2 proved that.
Most Americans want less government. Most Americans want to keep more of what they earn. Most Americans do not hate successful people nor do they want to take more and more of their money.
A small minority of very vocal Americans want to take, want to not work, want to vilify while they leach off the productivity of the rest of us. And that minority can scream all they like, we simply are no longer listening.
What's a "small percentage", Paul. Gallup says 66% support extending unemployment insurance.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/145109/Americans-Support-Major-Elements-Tax-Compromise.aspx
Apparently it's the Conservative lies that never cease.
Drive by - So true! Conservatives like Mental Michele (Bachmann) call Obama a communist Muslim and then turn around and call him Bush 41 who has vindicated Bush policies. Which one is it? Obama can't b e both. Really, it is the constant hypocrisy and lack of consistency that makes Republicans so deplorable.
And if we hear "the American people have spoken" one more time, we will die from a s**t hemorrhage. Aside from our election participation being so pitifully low, exist polls showed that most Americans did not want tax cuts extended for the richest 2%. And on and on Republicans only represent their campaign donors (wealthy/big business), and we all know it -- well except for FOX viewers.
Did anyone see the article about a study that shows FOX viewers are the least well informed? I see it all the time, for example they don't know that McCain was born in Panama, or when I talk about the tax cuts being passed by reconciliation, conservative family and friends never know these kind of facts. They also don't know that FOX gave 1 million to Republican governor campaigns while Keith Olbermann was suspended for personal contribution (also not allowed to promote or host rallies like Beck and Palin), or how MSNBC regularly retracts any incorrect information, but FOX never does, etc.
Information that does not support the Republican agenda is not reported by FOX/Hate Radio per the Republican rule of never speaking ill of another Republican. So how well informed can they expect to be? The so-called "liberal" media constantly criticizes the president and their own--you know, true journalism.
Let's see.... who is it that MSNBC is demanding that America should ridicule and HATE today ???....
The foreign-born 'Oblabba' and 'Botox Queen', for starters? Or 'Commie Liberals? Hmmm.....

America - The BOSS of Politicians
Teabaggers don’t know what teabaggers are supposed to believe.
The Other Leaks America and TEA Baggers Should Be Concerned About: Fox Leaks
In August of 2009, while the debate over health insurance reform was in full swing, GOP pollster Frank Luntz appeared on Sean Hannity’s program and advised Hannity and other Republican operatives to stop using the term “public option.” As a result of his own polling Luntz discovered that…
“…if you call it a ‘public option,’ the American people are split, [but] if you call it the ‘government option,’ the public is overwhelmingly against it.”
Luntz is a Republican pollster who specializes in language.

Another Leaked Email Exposes More Fox News Bias
Media Matters is reporting that the same news executive, Bill Sammon, issued these marching orders to producers and talent:
“Given the controversy over the veracity of climate change data we should refrain from asserting that the planet has warmed (or cooled) in any given period without IMMEDIATELY pointing out that such theories are based upon data that critics have called into question. It is not our place as journalists to assert such notions as facts, especially as this debate intensifies.”
http://www.newscorpse.com/ncWP/?p=3424
That. America - The BOSS of Politicians, is something you should hate in addition to that crazed lunatic Glenn Beck allusion to violence , Sarah Palin consistent lies, Jan brewer's "Death Panels" and the unrepentant bigot, Hannity.
And......
So what.....MSNBC and FOX are biased. CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, NPR etc....are all biased and wonder which way most go..hmmmm
Then you use MediaMatters as a source...LOL..now that is some funny shyt.
The only people obsessed with Beck, Hannity, Rush etc. are liberals. You are the only ones complaining and ATTEMPTING, I say ATTEMPTING to delegitimize those people. They will still be around long after you all take your toys and go home.
If all you got to go after them is phony azz Bad Perm Sharpton and MediaMatters then I know they will be here for a minute.
Beverly in Chicago,
As obvious as it may be for you to be one of the last few remaining liberal MSNBC supporters and therefore, an automatic FOX hater.... you automatically became defensive and began a personal assault against FOX News.... when no one mentioned ANYTHING about another media source, but you.
You have expanded your hatred (similar to MSNBC) with nothing but viscious personal insults (similar to MSNBC) by directing your supressed hatred toward individuals who simply have a conservative outlook on life (similar to MSNBC).... As personally offensive as conservatism, in general, may be to you, it is increasingly more apparent that you are in a small minority.... shrinking even more with each passing day (similar to MSNBC).
No one has ever witnessed anyone on the FOX news network make a statement implying or suggesting that a conservative President should "RULE" the country.... because FOX would never suggest such an Un-American, Communistic dictatorial statement.... but, can MSNBC honestly admit that it has NEVER implied or suggested that a liberal President "RULE" the country ???
The answer is NO, it can't !!!.... MSNBC doesn't want anyone to remember that MSNBC HAS made such a statement....
On June 15, 2010.... Ed Shultz (MSNBC) clearly and very EMPHATICALLY DEMANDED that BARACK OBAMA RULE THE COUNTRY AS A DICTATOR !!!!
I'm sure this would be easy for you to verify..... even though you will likely not admit that MSNBC clearly said this.
When you look it up..... at least be honest enough to admit to us here on the newsvine that MSNBC DID make this statement....... we will be waiting....
One more time, America- and one time only:
Fox proclaims itself to be a NEWS orgaization. NSNBC proclaims itself to be 'the place for politics'.
Get it? Goood.
drive-by-observer
One more time, America- and one time only:
Fox proclaims itself to be a NEWS orgaization. NSNBC proclaims itself to be 'the place for politics'.

drive-by-observer
America won't get it. FOX NOISE and its Echo Chamber i.e. Rush, Levin, Tea Potty, and right wing media decides for him/her/, transvestite/transsexual.
drive-by....
While we are waiting on Beverly in Chicago to get back with us on her response to whether or not MSNBC stated that BARACK OBAMA SHOULD RULE THE COUNTRY AS A DICATOR....
Are you trying to defend MSNBC for making their statement that "BARACK OBAMA SHOULD RULE THE COUNTRY AS A DICTATOR".... on the basis that they only offer their biased hatred and liberal political distortions.... and absolutely NO NEWS ???
And, therefore, it's acceptable for MSNBC to demand that Barack Obama should RULE as a dictator ???
Drive by:
That is a weak argument. FOX has separate divisions and it does report actual news. MSNBC has a lot of OPINION bearers that spew nothing but left-wing BS all day long. They even have Scarborough skewing left on most occasions.
Do Maddow, Olbermann, Fat Boy and Matthews not claim they are blabbering news?
Geziz, ya ingoramuses. "Fair and Balanced" "the place for politics".
No difference in what I would expect to find on either one??
Sure, duggir.

The little leftie lies never cease -
Under Bush, tax rates dropped, tax revenues WENT UP
Us Little lefties are not disputing that renuves went up during the Bush years, we are upset that dispite renuves going up, his spending went up twice as much as our renuves,
2 wars, medicare part D, TSA, HLS.
Bush will go down as the ONLY president to give a tax cut while fighting 2 wars. this is the problem Little lefties have.
Get it.
Oh, and revenue went up for the same reason revenues ALWAYS go up over time. The American economy expanded enough to overcome the revenue NOT brought in due to tax cuts.
That doesn't mean revenue wasn't lower than it WOULD HAVE BEEN if not for the tax cuts.
Jody:
Funny how the rhetoric from the right does not match up with their deeds. They say one thing and seem to do just the opposite. Just take what they say, reverse it, and that is what they mean.
A funny little thing I saw yesterday.

From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE...
Wednesday Wassailing Down on the House Floor
(Apologies to "Up on the House Top") To be sung using this tune.
Down on the House floor Boehner cries
Lights a cig and spins more lies
Teabaggers think he's on their side
They got taken for a ride
Ho Ho Ho, they all got snowed
Ho Ho Ho, the pork'll flow
Down on the House floor click click click
Business as usual, ain't that slick!
Fun, Navy!
Navy, thank you so much for sharing that little bit of holiday cheer. I've been thinking for days about writing something political to a Christmas Carol but I don't have to now. This is just priceless.
Merry Christmas everybody.
Navy, I have a Question...when it comes to short term spending our states are in worse shape than Greece and Spain were when they collapsed, and the states in 2012 will have to come up with the money to set up the Obama Health care so it can be instituted.. Texas alone will have to pay 57 Billion... where do you and the progressives think all this money will come from, not the Federal Government that's for sure, they made sure when they wrote the bill it was the states problem, will the states collapse further under this enormous expenditure's its citizens will have to pay ?? this will certainly make Obamas likability SOAR, right?
I've been saying all along that the teabaggers got punked. You can't cure stupidity...
Don't you get it they all do that, lets take health care why do you think our esteemed Senators and Congressman don't want the same health care, same goes for the tax cuts, go to a flat tax system and everyone pays the same, but neither side talks about this why?
“Harris then asked if he could purchase insurance from the government to cover the gap,” added the aide, who was struck by the similarity to Harris’s request and the public option he denounced as a gateway to socialized medicine.
http://www.sodahead.com/united-states/gop-andy-harris-tea-party-members-wants-his-goverment-run-healthcare-and-he-wants-it-now-is-this-g/question-1339687/
Dancnman was right...y'all got punked.
First off what does that have to do with my comments, second I'm an Independent, third I don't belong to the tea Party, but please continue following blindly your one of the reasons this country is in the state it's in
Registered independents can be partisan too--in fact most are.
Well John I'm not ,I support what ever Idea I think is helpful regardless of which party brought it up for example I support parts of the healthcare bill such as pre conditions and being carried till 26 but I don't support mandatory coverage, I don't support tax cuts, I support flat tax in my state I voted for Repubs and Dems. who ever was closest to my views
Fair positions on all of those things. We have more in common than you might imagine.
So Navy how do feel about the fact that this can be put right back on the left as well. I mean isn't your great savior BO screwing all you Dems right now? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Thanks though it was funny!
First Read: What's benefiting Obama?
He has been through many storms during his first two years and to see these numbers is astounding. He has had to fight tooth and nail (yes, FIGHT) to get legislation passed and almost constant negative press and yet I look at these numbers and I say - good for him. Too bad most adults in this country can't grow up. Oh well. There is money to be made in the blogsophere and what better punching bag than the President of the United States with nonstop screaming headlines and scream fests on tv?

Obama Administration

The Justice Department sued BP and several other companies involved in the Gulf oil spill Wednesday, an opening salvo in the government's effort to get billions of dollars for untold economic and environmental damage. The government accuses the companies of disregarding federal safety regulations in drilling the well that blew out April 20 and triggered a deadly explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig. The lawsuit is separate from a Justice Department criminal probe that has not resulted in any charges.
"The department's focus on investigating this disaster and preventing future (spills) is not over," Attorney General Eric Holder said during a news conference in Washington. "Both our civil and criminal investigations are ongoing."
Industrial production in the U.S. increased more than forecast in November and consumer prices slowed, indicating the recovery is gaining momentum without generating inflation. Output at factories, mines and utilities rose 0.4 percent, the biggest gain since July, after a revised 0.2 percent drop in October, a Federal Reserve report showed today in Washington. The consumer-price index climbed 0.1 percent in November after a 0.2 percent gain the prior month, the Labor Department said.
http://thinkprogress.org/
Assembly lines are speeding up as business investment and exports grow and consumer spending accelerates, helping to buoy an expansion that Fed policy makers said yesterday isn't strong enough to reduce a jobless rate hovering near 10 percent. Price increases that are below central bankers' goal will boost the case to maintain the Fed's purchases of $600 billion in securities through June to spur growth.
The Labor Department reports that weekly claims for jobless benefit dropped by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 420,000 in the week ending Dec. 11. The AP reports that fewer numbers of people applying for unemployment benefits is "the third drop in the past four weeks and a sign that the job market is slowly improving."
Are Progressives Losing Touch With Reality? http://blackwaterdog.wordpress.com/
Bits & Pieces from article:
Second, stop whining and wise up, progressives. The president isn't going to pass every last thing on your personal wish list. Just because he compromised on something that you've been frantically tweeting about doesn't mean it's time to pitch a tantrum and hurl the board game across the room -- storming off in a snit.
The volume of progressive crabbery and moping lately has been staggering -- otherwise sane progressives vowing to not vote in 2012, or to somehow conjure up a viable primary challenger to run against the president.
First of all, the progressive movement is hardly the president's base. Most progressive leaders supported John Edwards during the primaries, and many were ambivalent about the president once he was nominated. The president's base is made up of mostly non-political Americans -- many of whom desperately need their unemployment benefits to continue until the jobs return.
_____________
Edwards? You've got to be kidding me. I thought they were Hillary supporters and in some instances, ex-GOP supporters. Edwards? I can hardly believe it. He was always full of himself.
Weak. And a phony. Progressives didn't see that? I'm surprised.
Pat, those exports come at a cost- a weak dollar that is already driving up costs for commodities. The inflation rate for the upcoming year is going to be quite painful.
This is the second leg of the Keynesian stool- a weakened currency, which causes inflation, should cause businesses to hire more workers. It is all fine in theory, but in reality, it brings on the economic misery known as stagflation. Gas prices, which ripple throughout the economy, are already rising, and not, as was the case in 2008, because of speculation on oil futures, but because of a weak dollar.
Should the republican congress succeed in actually cutting spending, rather than simply reducing the rate of spending growth, it should ameliorate, but not cure, the problem.
In other words, hang on to your hat, it is going to be a bumpy ride.
The pub's are going to screw things up for everyone but big business, bankers and big time wealthy constituents. It's win at all costs because the people with their hands up our azzes and keep us in power are insulated.
Um, guys? There was an indisputable poll on the Obama presidency last month.
It was not too good for him.
Oh, and by the way, Obama is threatening Democrats with the line that, if they do not pass this tax bill, it will be the end of his presidency
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2010/12/15/dem_congressman_obama_warns_tax_bill_could_be_end_of_his_presidency.html
You heard it here first. . .
Poll Dancer is back !!!!
And no I didn’t hear it here first. I heard it last night on MSNBC. And no Congressman, other than DeFazio, had heard that from the President or WH.
I thought that the Nov Poll (election) was the main identifyer for this Prez.
I read some pretty good posts, laced with links, information and insight. Then I get to....
no joe, no bo, nj
Really, all you can do is try to find some way to belittle our President? Whoever you are, you are clearly out of your league.
No Joe. Dream away. Two years, and republicans will be on the outside again.
No Joe...
Yeah...I think any poll conducted this soon after the midterms is gonna be slightly unreliable. But at least this poll was conducted by a reputable polling firm. That poll that FR cited yesterday was very disappointing. Citing a poll by a one-sided polling organization for an admittedly Progressive PAC. I expect better than that...sorry!
As for the results of this particular poll...I think the head to head matchups aren't reliable. Palin will NOT be the nominee. I'm moving to Ecuador if she is. LOL! But seriously...I think the nominee comes from outside of the group that ran in the GOP Primary last election. And right now...polling 2012 matchups is just too early. It's going to come down to the performance of the economy in the next 2 years and the GOP nominee.
Happy Thursday all!
FrankH:
touche' With some it never changes, just more of the same old same old rhetoric.
"Really, all you can do is try to find some way to belittle our President? Whoever you are, you are clearly out of your league."
Frank H- all you have to know is- she's been using this screen name since before DAY ONE of Obama's presidency. Kind of says it all, doesn't it? And we should take ANYTHING she says seriously....WHY?
Grimey, I agree one hundred per cent with you on the GOP nominees. It is a media driven narrative designed to bolster Obama and demean the republican party.
Worked out real well for them last month, did it not?
There were a couple of laugh out loud items in some of the polls out this weak- one was in Gallup, which showed that congress had its lowest approval ever. The conclusion meant to be drawn was that people disapproved of the new republican congress, which ignores the fact that the new congress has not been seated. My conclusion, which I believe is more likely, is that people disapprove of the democrats' response to the outcome of the mid terms. I mean, seriously, keeping Nancy Pelosi as minority leader?
One of the lines in First Read also had me grinning. So, if this is as bad as it gets, (in their view, at least), Obama gets re elected, but if it gets worse, he will not. Kind of like saying that if it is sunny outside, it is not raining.
Anyway, back to your point- I think all this media nonsense on the republican nominee is actually very helpful, because then, whoever does get the nomination gets to define himself or herself to the electorate, without having to crawl over the media definition dragging them down. That is why so many have declared that they will not announce until the Spring.
Pretty good strategy, if you ask me.
Actually, drive by, it was BEFORE the election. The reason was simple- someone appropriated my name in order to post pro-Obama drivel.
I then chose a moniker that could not possibly be used for that end.
I cannot tell you how deeply your disapproval cuts. Think Saran wrap, only thinner.
DBO (me) said ".... using this screen name since before DAY ONE...." with an emphasis on that word that falls between "since" and "DAY".
But, semantics aside- my comment is still completely accurate. Saran wrap and all.
nojoe,
Obama is a clever politician. He threatens dummycrat congressmen that if they do not leave their lips permanently attached to his a$$ he won't be reelected. They are non-thinking, yellow-dog liberals, so they continue to lap it off of his leg, fearing a republican POTUS.
Obama is clever enough to drive the economy to about as bad as it can possibly get. Then when it doesn't get any worse (because it can't), he boasts that "it's not getting worse", and all of his non-thinking, yellow-dog liberals lap it up.
no joe, no bo, nj
Oh, and by the way, Obama is threatening Democrats with the line that, if they do not pass this tax bill, it will be the end of his presidency
---------------------------------------------------
"The president hasn’t said anything remotely like that and has never spoken with Mr. DeFazio about the issue," said White House spokesman Tommy Vietor.
---------------------------------------------------
NOJO you and many others were, once again, suckered into a conversation that didn't even happen. Stop with the knee jerk reactions....they alway prove to make you and others look foolish. Washington has ALWAYS played these games...it's just that now it hits the internet and goes viral.
No Joe, you're mistaken - the Republicans do just fine demeaning themselves with their loony antics and supporters. MSNBC or any other outlet for that matter just happens to capture and broadcast it along...
I saw some polls numbers on Morning Joe this morning that showed Obama in pretty good shape. Ahead of the 'generic' repub, ahead of Mitt, (way) ahead of Palin. Not sure about those 'indisputable' polls LAST month, but rest assured- there will be a lot of distraction and mis-direction on here today from the usual 'experts'.
Let the brainless howling begin.....
Can someone tell me when did MONTH old polls became a credible source of information?
Anyone???
Oh... I get it... when they fit the usual I HATE ALL THINGS OBAMA narrative right?
How about the November election? Would you not consider that as a prime poll of the Dude-in-Chief?
By all means, PLEASE do continue with the overreach - it's most entertaining since your house of cards has already begun to crumble. See IR's post #2
These clowns haven't even been sworn into office yet... lmao
Hell hath no fury like p!ssed off tea baggers!
Safecracker. Obama did not appear on any ballot, but we did get rid of a lot of blue dogs, good riddance.
Safecracker, they ignore that which does not fit their narrative.
If you insist on referring to anything that disputes their mantra, (Obama is great! Everything he does is great! All hail Obama!), they have what they consider to be a failsafe option at their disposal:
They call you names.
They actually believe that works to undercut your facts.
It is sad that there are so many in the democratic party who never matured past the fifth grade.
NOW that's PRICELESS coming from the Queen of I HATE EVERYTHING OBAMA narrative!
Who's also NOT above embellishing her tales in an attempt to further her rhetoric! lmfao
Dennis - do you have change for a dollar? lol
Oh, and did I meniton 'brainless howling" ?
How about 'misdirecting? Geez- I'm beginning to sound like a broken record. Somebody call me a "NoJo whaambulance".
Feisty- I do NOT have change for a dollar, but what do you think we can get with a couple of bottle caps and a washer?
Feisty:
good catch. I saw that about last month poll, ignoring the latest poll. When you have no new ideas and the old ones you have are proven to not work, you look for anything you can to spin it to your agenda. The republicans are masters of this. They can not argue the fact that President Obama has a better approval rating than the republican/tea party. He is holding his own and has really not lost his base to the extent that many claim. Lost some, yes but still holding steady and not that far from 50%.
DADT is now a stand alone Bill passed by the House yesterday. Lets see who in the Senate is listening to the 70% of Ameicans that feel that DADT should be repealed. The vast majority of the Military also feel it should be repealed as well (even the big higher ups in the Military support it except for the Marine General) are they also going to listen to our soliders? If this goes down in the Senate we will have more proof of the republican/tea party's agenda of creating a scoiety based on class. That is a fact as far as I am concerned.
Now Red using Quarters for P-Tips this time of year is cruel. Them things are cold when they slide down to the more sensitive areas. Kind of spoils the old Poll Dancer's rhythm.
Um, yoo-hoo, I was referring to the mid term elections. Remember them? Pretty clear results, if you ask me. 63 democratic house seats- gone. Six Senate seats- gone. Close to eight hundred democratic state legislators,- gone. All those democratic governors-gone. Did I mention that this was a redistricting year? I should have; it is important.
Was I not told on this board, over and over, last year, that the republicans had gone the way of the Whigs? I am pretty sure I was- how did that work out for you? Not too good, huh?
Those will work just fine as you know how fond she is of shiney objects!
Let the GOOD times ROLL! Whoo Hoo!
No kidding Navy! So they use month old data and make sh!t up as they go... real credible! lmao
LOL! Let's hope her rhythm is more reliable than her predictions!
safecracker
I don't recall that President Obama was on the ballot last November. If he had been, I think he'd have beaten the likes of tea party loonies like Sharron Angle in a landslide of historic proportions. Even Harry Reid with his high negative ratings with Nevada voters managed to give her a good whupping.
Ok kiddies, here's today's challenge. Nojojo, joana#1, all of you snarky right wing posters.
I CHALLENGE YOU! To say one sincerely nice thing about the President.
I betcha can't. If you do, you get a nice Christmas cookie.
Go on, ...you can do it.....it'seasy, he's a good man...he's got a nice family.....he's got a cute dog......He quit smoking, bravo...Something nice because it's Christmas.
C'mon, you can do it.
Okay, Skip- his daughters have always appeared to be delightful, well reared young ladies, who seem not to have an ounce of bratty behavior between them. While I suppose the credit for that is shared by their mother and grandmother, their father's influence cannot be discounted.
Earlier this year, Obama signed an executive order mandating that hospitals allow anyone designated to visit with a loved one- that was aimed at gay couples, some of whom have been closed out of hospital rooms so that their partners had to suffer, and, in some cases, die, alone. I applauded that at the time, and still give him credit for it.
Good enough for you?
Oh, by the way, I do not eat sweets. You can keep the cookie.
Skip...I'm a right wing poster and I've said plenty of nice things about him in the past.
I admire the way he worked with the GOP to come up with a tax plan compromise.
I think he's personally a great guy who I could see hanging out with. Anyone who doubts that should read his trash talk exchange with Kobe Bryant...cracked me up!
He has a beautiful family and appears to be an outstanding family man.
He is an outstanding public speaker and campaigner.
I disagree with his POLICIES, not all of them, but a lot. I've yet to say something personally derogatory toward him.
In fact, I've praised his supporters for their incredibly hard work on behalf of his campaign during 2008.
Just know that it's possible to disagree with him policies and still find him likeable.
Oh, and Fiesty? As I recall, early in 2009, I began predicting that republicans would pick up 50 seats in the mid terms, at a time when every other pundit was opining that the republicans would LOSE seats in the mid terms.
I upped my prediction to 60 in July of that year.
So far,my predictions have been pretty good. According to one congressman from his own party, Obama is threatening to end his presidency if they do not vote with him on the tax extension bill.
I also predicted that.
So, tell me, how many times will he cry wolf before he actually does resign?
"So, tell me, how many times will he cry wolf before he actually does resign?"
Judging from the decision to agree to extend all of the Bush tax cuts, he'll try bending first.
Well done everybody who responded. Grimey, Nojo, thank you very much. You have restored my faith in the American people.
Now, what about the rest of you? Certainly there is SOMETHING about our President that you can agree with and compliment.
C'mon, you can do it.
Thanks Nojo, I ate the cookie.
Again, sincerely, MERRY CHRISTMAS to everybody.
So typical for the Republicans: NJ was asked to say something nice about the President, and since her head would pop off if she did, she pays honor to his young daughters, gives the credit to their mother, and the most she can say about the President is that "his influence cannot be discounted." Fail, NJ, try again. And while we are on your predictions, NJ, you also predicted that Nancy Pelosi would resign in disgrace. You just aren't very good at this. But, in the spirit of what skip asked, since I do respect him, I will wish you a happy holiday, and suggest that a sweet might improve your dyspeptic disposition.
Mixed Bag, you have more faith than I. I see this as an attempt to frame the argument that he is willing to compromise, but just this once.
Go back and read the speeches he has given on the subject. Not a lot of conciliatory language there, unless calling people hostage takers is meant as a compliment.
I think he is most angered by the complaints from his own party. Certainly, he has aimed as much invective at them.
I expected him to threaten resignation- have been saying it for over a year. This will not be the last time he says it, and, after a while, he is going to have to carry out his threat.
Sooner is much better than later.
Dawn, Merry Christmas.
Now, come on, play nicely, it's Christmas. Nojo gave it her best shot and I give her credit for it. She gets a gold star today was well. And Grimey gets one too. I'm proud of Midtex for making a comment without cursing.
Hey MSNBC how about giving the Gold stars instead of Green Stars?
I'll say something nice about Congressmen McConnel and Boehner. They both work very hard and represent their constituency very well. They are the loyal opposition and they are part of what makes the American system of government the model for the world. Thank you for working with the President on the Tax Cut compromise and thank you for extending the job benefits to the unemployed.
There, hows that?
Again, Merry Christmas to all.
Newday, go back and read the second paragraph.
Or does that not fit your narrative?
Pailin pole proves how retarded she and her viewers are. It proves Fox viewers are quitters and look for quitters to idolize . ;] It proves they are looking for a quitter to lead them a quitter to be our president and a quitter to be the most powerful person on earth. Brilliant. ; ]
Sorry Skip... you can play nicely with the cactus... I used to until I got pricked!
Now Grimey on the other hand... he's the MOST reasonable & respected Repubican on this board!
BTW: Grimey - I'm still waiting for my autographed Margarita glass! :0)
No JO: no, the first part renders it insincere. Unless you want to clearly state that President Obama is a excellent dad who has youngsters that do him credit. Our friend Frank really models for all of us what the phrase " loyal opposition" should look like. I envy him the ability to be as consistent as he is. Merry Christmas, Frank.
Awww, c'mon Fiesty, it's Christmas, or Hannuka or Kwanza or the Winter Solstice, whatever.
I bet you could say something nice about the GOP if you tried. I did and it wasn't hard at all.
Ok, I have to tell you all the truth. Here it comes, write it down.
WE ARE ALL AMERICANS! Yep, it's true, every red, white, and blue one of us. As Americans we have strong opinions and we are NOT reluctant to express those opinions. But every now and then we need to step back and say something nice to defuse the negativity that normally flows unchecked on these boards.
We need to acknowledge that there is good in each of us and that TOGETHER we can accomplish miracles.
It's Christmas (or any of the above) and what better time to put down the hatchet, share a cup of cheer and do something nice for somebody.
If you can say something nice to or about someone you normally castigate and villify then you become something better than the two-dimensional demonized cardboard cut-out you created of them and yourself.
C'mon, it's not hard. You can do it. Hey, it's only once a year, right?
Uh-oh..I'm starting to tear up. (sniff, sob, snuffle)
Now give it a shot, Merry Christmas!
Remember what Tom Lehrer said. "You can hate each other all the more the other three hundred and sixty four."
Okay, I get it, new day. You did not support then order that allowed gay partners visiting rights in hospitals.
In my view, that is a basic human right. Obama did the right thing.
If you do not agree, I am sorry for you. I am sorry for all those hampered by prejudice.
no joe, no bo, nj
Okay, Skip- his daughters have always appeared to be delightful, well reared young ladies, who seem not to have an ounce of bratty behavior between them. While I suppose the credit for that is shared by their mother and grandmother, their father's influence cannot be discounted.
No Jo a fathers influence with his daughters is more important than the mothers. you forgot to mention the order he signed regarding equal pay for men and women, or was that just a liberal thing and you just don't care about one of you own getting paid the same as a man.
Skip, No Jo can't say any thing nice about the president because she hates the guy, plain and simple. with some it has to do with race or political affiliation, but with her its just plain hate, even though he pass HCR that says INS companies can't deny health care for children with pre-exiting conditions. No Jos sweet grand daughter was born with health concerns, but what she just can't seem to stop doing is going against her best interest, HCR is in her granddaughters best interest, but No Jo just can't get past the fact she this guy.
No Jo, here in Chicago the firemen just signed a new 5 year deal, they will get a 2%raise for the next 5 years, as well as giving concessions to the city regarding higher shift times to save the city million of dollars. You know those dam Union people, you just can't get them to give up any thing. but lets face it, No Jo is apart of the same republicans cult that called the 911 heros a specials interest group.
Hows you governers case going against the government trying to get there dam money back from his scandless cheap worthless A*S
Yeah. Merry Christmas to you, too, Jeff.
skip:
If there was anything actually nice to say about Obama, somebody would. Not!
Let me educate you NJ on how a sincere compliment works: And this is for someone that I do not agree with and dislike: John Boehner, I am in awe of your ability to keep your troops in line, and get them to all vote in a block. See, NJ, now you try: I'll start you out: President Obama: I am in awe of....
SORRY
No Jo, Merry Christmas to you and yours. are you staying at the crib or are you travling.
i'm sorry but your governer just pisses me off. the I'm not as mad he does not want to return the money, i'm more upset that he canceled the 4000 construction jobs, when we in construction need every project out there to keep our guys busy.
so lets do this, you can hate on Obama, while i hate on your governer, is that cool.
Feisty...every time I try to mail it, someone tips the box and the contents of the glass spill everywhere and ruin the box. Hmmm...maybe I should just mail an empty one. ;-)
By the way...HUGE shout out to Chicago Blackhawks center Jake Dowell. He went to the home of a 5 year old, dying of a rare and sadly uncurable form of brain cancer. THAT is the true spirit of the holidays. And it's things like this that have always made me think that hockey players are the most down to earth of all pro athletes.

Skip...thanks for the gold star my friend. Your posts always leave me laughing!
Take care all!
Grimey, what a nice thing to say. Thank you very much. You earned your gold star. Yours was the model for an opposition positive comment. Nojo did a good job as well. I know it was hard.
I'm pleased with the effort people made to say something positive in the Christmas spirit. I wish more had participated but you do what you can. You can lead a horse to water, etc etc etc.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Why do you guys blindly follow someone who has lied to you over and over, health care, transparency, no tax cuts for the rich, closing Gitmo, wiretaps, rendition, expanding the war, open your eyes
Must be the couple of HUNDRED things he HAS accomplished, wlee;

Skip,
I am probably more moderate than most righties, but I will say something nice about the President.
He has nice hair, still, hasn't pulled it out. Always looks neat and clean.
I believe that he is also a very good speaker.
John first off I never said he didn't accomplish anything this is exactly what I'm talking about second I think you need to re-examine pay as you go, wasteful spending check out omnibus 6000 pork items come on wake up
Good for you Feisty, and I see our friend NJ never did come back with a sincere compliment for President Obama. I don't know whether to glad that I am justified in my beliefs, or sad that she can't even try.
 to vote
Sarah Palin is popular with Faux News viewers and this is news why? I can see why the same 20 million people who religiously watch fake news also religiously support the weirdo from wasila. Its one big echo chamber of drivel and it gets their blood boiling thinking about a non citizen being president or all of that socialist spending going on.
I know you guys think your being clever with the Faux News thing, but faux is actually pronounced Foe
Yep, Wlee, you are exactly right. Foe. Works on so many levels, right?
I guess if I was a little dumber I could have been a Democrat too
I don't really have much to add . . . just saying hi . . . still too busy to "play"! :o(
Oy!
Y' ain't missing much, Nash- Obama's still in charge, still doing a good job, and the detractors can't stand it one iota.
Thanks for stopping by. Do it again when you can stay a while.
LOL. Obama's IN CHARGE ? He is NOT in charge dbo. He is nothing more than the top PR man in the country. A mouthpeice for Wall St. and corporations. He is run by a private bank AKA The Federal Reserve.

LOL. Obama's IN CHARGE ? He is NOT in charge dbo. He is nothing more than the top PR man in the country. A mouthpeice for Wall St. and corporations. He is run by a private bank AKA The Federal Reserve
Then why have the Wall Street Barons accused the President of being anti-business?
Beverly- did I mention "they can't stand it one iota"?
Hey, Nash, you still there?
Merry Christmas. Or, in the words of the princess, who cannot manage that, "Ha, Ha, Who" ( her way of saying Ho, Ho, Ho).
Thanks no joe . . . give her a big hug from Auntie Nash! :o)
This nation lost a great pitcher and a better patriot last night with the passing of Hall of Famer Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians...aka "Rapid Robert"...aka "The Heater From Van Meter".
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Two days later, Bob Feller enlisted in the Navy and chose to give up 3 years of his baseball career. He didn't have to...he had a deferrment as he was caring for his ailing father at the time.
Asked why he enlisted, he once said, "We were losing a war, a big war, we were losing big in the Pacific. Any red-blooded American with a gut in his body would have gotten busy. We took back the Pacific. I can look anyone in the eye and say, 'I was there.'"
Rest in peace, sir.
I think that if the anger that brought about the November mid-term sweep remains, then Obama and all the congressional Class three Democrats and Rino senators and Democrat and rino Representatives will be in jeopardy. The Republicans have a huge advantage in the next two years. If this administration attempts to bring about any more liberal agenda items, the Republicans can block them, and still hold the attempt up for ridicule. If anything goes wrong, or even just doesn't get better fast enough, the Republicans can blame it all on Obama. Obama, even if he were halfway competent, which is not the case, is really in a no-win situation. Whatever he does can be viewed as wrong. If he does nothing, it is also wrong. Too late to blame Bush, so all the problems are Obama's fault. Obama's recession, Obama's pork budget, Obama's deficit, Obama's inflation, Obama's oil spill disaster, Obama's hurricane, Obama's wars.
Also, anything he says, can, and will, be used against him in the next campaign.
Goldman top bosses to get tens of millions in bonuses today bah humbug. Wheres the grinch when you need him?
Edward:
You pretty much summed it up. Right now they are calling this the Obama Tax Cut Deal and hammering the notion that he owns it now. Whatever happens, good or bad, President Obama is going to be held responsible. This Tax Cut Deal is a huge gamble as far as I am concerned. If one thing goes astray this may come crashing to the ground and there are going to be causalities, no doubt. The republican/tea party are going to continue with their "Obstructionist" agenda, claiming that our President is not doing anything. You can bet that the republican/tea party will not take any ownership for their actions. They still have not taken responsibility for the two unfunded wars, the two unfunded tax cuts that gave 50% of the benefits to the top 2% (and we are doing it again, go figure - it did not work the first time), the unfunded drug bill and the reduced regulations that have costed lives in addition to creating a record deficit that President Obama now has to deal with and we Americans and our children are going to pay for. They (republican/tea party) keep talking about the deficit and totally ignore that a big portion of that deficit is a direct result of the mismanagement of the previous administration. This is not going to stop and will in fact get worse as 2012 approaches.
Time to lose the whole "obstructionist" narrative, US Navy...the electorate just rewarded the "Party Of No" by kicking out 53 incumbent Democratic House members, while adding 63 new GOP House members and 6 additional GOP members to the Senate. What part of that result don't you understand?
A reasonable person could conclude that the voters wanted Republicans to say "no" to much of the Democratic agenda.
The "obstructionist" tag also seems a bit inappropriate after the vast majority of GOP Senators just finished voting with their Democratic counterparts, 81-19, to support President Obama's proposal to extend all of the Bush tax cuts.
President Obama, according to First Read's analysis of the new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, got the voters' message and is moving on.
Looks like many First Read regulars are having difficulty adjusting to the new reality.
To his credit...President Obama is not.
Then what do you call what Senators Kyl and DeMint and McCain have been doing with the Senate's business for the past several days?
fielden-
You didn't understand what I said...I'm not suggesting that Republicans haven't tried to obtruct the agenda of the Democratic Party and President Obama. It would be odd, to say the least, if they didn't...don't you think?
What I'm suggesting is that, based on the results of last month's electoral apocalypse for Democrats, to include setting a new record for defeated incumbents of any party and the worst defeat going back to 1938...that maybe the whole "Party Of No" and "Republicans are obtructionists" narrative simply hasn't worked for Democrats.
I'm fairly comfortable advancing that argument, fielden.
Mixed Bag - That's why I voted in November 2010. Obama snookered us and I will know cast doubt on everything he attempts to do through the END OF HIS TERM - January 2013. About 740 days and counting...
Keith Olbermann reported last night that Bradley Manning, the guy who leaked all the documents to Julian Assange, has been held in solitary confinement for seven months, and he is not even allowed to exercise in his cell. He is let out for only 1 hour a day. This is treatment usually reserved for violent and uncooperative criminals. Bradley has not even been convicted of anything yet.
Olbermann seemed to think this treatment is simply vindictiveness on the part of the government. But one commentator on Pacifica radio this morning suggested the real reason is that they are trying to torturre the guy into testifying that Assange induced him to leak the documents so that they can charge Assange with espionage. That seems plausible; there's usually a reason that prisoners are tortured, and psychologists who've studied the effects of solitary confinement on prisoners have concluded that it is in fact torture. One of the biggest disappointments I've had with Obama is that he has not ended the Bush torture policies. I don't know why he hasn't put an end to it.
And continuing on the subject of Bush and leaks from yesterday, consider what would have followed if, at the end of August, 2001, the newspaper headlines were screaming: "Leaked Secret Memo Reveals Osama Bin Laden Determined to Strike Inside the United States." Only blind Bush believers could insist that this would not have been likely derailed Al Qaeda's plans for the 9/11 attack. Everyone in the country would have been on high alert. Maybe even Bush since he would likely have been forced to bow to political pressure to do something about it.
Butch and Sundance are on the cliff again.
Surely any serious effort to derail the 9/11 attacks would have involved preventing the 9/11 pilots from being trained by U.S. instructors, in U.S. aircraft, at U.S. flight schools while Bill Clinton was President of the United States.
Just a thought...
Mixed: And Clinton would have had a say in this........how? He was supposed to know that some people were taking pilot's lessons? Most of the time if someone is taking lessons they use US planes and US instructors. You are trying to use a very long reach and you are not getting there.
Bag
I agree completely that someone should have leaked that information, despite your lame attempt to blame Clinton for Bush's blunders. Clinton had no knowledge himself of the pilot training because it was kept under wraps by a handful of FBI bureaucrats.
Clinton did not get any memo about it similar to the one Bush ignored in August 2001, or any warnings similar to Richard Clarke's repeated warnings to Bush administration officials that an attack on America was imminent. In fact, Clinton had tried to take out Bin Laden, and the Republicans just accused him of a "wag the dog" tactic to divert attention from the Lewinsky scandal. Back in the '90s, destroying the President of the United States had priority over national security, just like it does now.
And leaking of the memo that Bush ignored in August 2001 would almost CERTAINLY have led to a very different outcome on 9/11/01 had that information been splashed through all the headlines and the evening news. That's a fact you are unwilling to acknowledge but you know it's true.
Mixed Bag
I think the real answer is: PROFILING, profiling, profiling. If this tactic was used consistently, we would not have half the problems we have with air travel, immigration, etc. It is time to get it right before it is too late!
BigPaul
The terrorists are evil, but they're not completely stupid. They're likely to use European or African converts to extremist Islam, or some eastern Europeans who were born Muslim like the Bosnians who wanted to blow up Fort Dix. The best way to have prevented the 9/11 attacks would have been simply to havere reinforced doors separating the cockpit from the passeger section of airplanes, but the airlines wouldn't do it because they said it was too expensive. FAA regulations now require all planes to have reinforced doors and locked at all times, but that unfortunately was after the terrorist horse had left the barn.
Houston!-
Here's what I know is true...there is a great deal of hypocrisy displayed when assigning responsibility for the planning and execution of the 9/11 attacks.
The attacks occurred on President Bush's watch...that's undeniable.
But accountability hardly begins and ends there...except among partisan ideologues and/or 9/11 "truthers".
It's pretty clear that you fit in there somewhere, Houston.
Bag:
Once again, you're dodging the point: Had the media gotten ahold of the memo that Bush ignored, it would likely have altered the course of event on and after 9/11 significantly.
It's pretty clear that you fit in much better. If Obama had ignored as clear and as dire a warning of an impending terrorist attack, you would be screaming with outrage for months -- and deservedly so because it would be an unforgiveable dereliction of his duty as president. But he hasn't and neither did Clinton, Bush #1, Reagan, or any of the preceding presidents. But I'll bet you're one of the goofballs who attacked Obama for the FAILED undie bomber attack of which he had no knowledge and which was the fault, if anyone can be blamed, of the srewed up bureacracy he inherited from the previous amdinistration. Weren't you, Bag?
Houston!-
Unless you go completely bonkers on me...I'll simply put you down as "hypocritical partisan ideologue".
Houston
Wasn't the murder of our sailors and bombing of the world trade towers, under Clintons watch, not enough of a clue that Al Queda should be pursued and stopped? Didn't Gore and Clinton have the opportunity to have Bin Laden basically given over to the US? Instead of arguing about whether a memo was issues and/or read, how about dealing with factual events, and the deaths caused by them, during Clintons era. Did I forget to mention the embassy bombings during Clintons term? Sorry if I did.
Big D:
Lots of very bad stuff happens on every president's watch. It can be argued back and forth whether any of them did enough given the information they had on hand of some threat. But none of them did NOTHING, except G. W. Bush when given a clear warning that would have caused a public uproar had it been leaked to the press. That's why hyperpartisan hacks like Mixed Bag can only throw tantrums and name-call when confronted with the facts that are too horrible for them to admit are true.
Houston,
Sorry I can't agree. You still fail to address the utter failure of Clinton/Gore to do ANYTHING, other than destroy a pharmaceutical factory with a cruise missle. Please tell me what Clinton/Gore actually did when all of these terrorist attacks occurred on their watch? Did they dispatch special forces? Did they go after Bin Laden and Al Queada? If only they had done SOMETHING to address the multiple actual attacks and murders of hundreds of our civilians, soldiers and other poor victims who had the misfortune of being at one of our embassies attacked by Al Queda. You keep harping on what a memo may have said. Yet you fail to take to task CLintons failure to respond to ACTUAL ATTACKS THAT KILLED NUMEROUS AMERICAN CITIZENS. Why do you fail to admit the facts? Am I wrong in my recollection of all the Al Queda attacks? If I am, please educate me.
Aren't you doing the same thing by not admitting the facts pertaining to CLinton? What is worse, not facing something that MAY have happened, or, failure to face the ACTUAL deaths and maiming caused by attacks that Clinton NEVER addressed. I believe you are guilty of the very thing you are criticizing.
I heard they were water boarding him and making him look at pictures of naked women
By the way Houston one of the reasons why Bin Laden launched 9/11 was because he believed the US was nothing more then a paper Tiger based on the response he got on previous attacks on us
Why wouldn't he? The President of the United States sends cruise missiles and warns that bin Laden is the most dangerous man on Earth. Republicans respond by screeching "wag the dog" and complain that Monica Lewinsky's inability to get to the dry cleaner in a timely manner is more important.
Conservatives gave Osama every reason to believe the US was a paper tiger.
http://articles.cnn.com/1998-08-20/us/9808_20_us.strikes.01_1_sudanese-television-bin-mullah-abdullah?_s=PM:US
John please , Bin Laden made this statement during the Clinton admin. my point is that it didn't matter who was President it was going to happen so blaming Bush is ridiculous If you want to blame the intelligence Agency you would be more accurate
Houston!-
Off topic, but...
Since you brought up "hyperpartisan hacks"...have Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow jumped on board President Obama's deal with the GOP to extend all of the Bush tax cuts yet?
On tonight's "The Ed Show", I did hear Ed Schultz refer to the "Obama tax cuts for the rich"...
Oh my, Houston...
"THE OBAMA TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH"...!
Ed Schultz is most definitely a hyperpartisan hack...but, I'm guessing he's really not on board, eh, Houston?
wlee, I can't disagree that we were ill-prepared to fend off the attacks of 9/11 regardless who may have been President at that time.
Christmas my ass. The dem's in DC do some stupid things also but this is insane. The pubs are being the typical pissants they've been for the last two years. It's so obvious that for them it's all about "our team has to win at all costs" that it isn't even denyable anymore.
Everything they have said has been one lie after another and all of the people here who defend them in lock step even if they murdered and ate a baby right at the podium in front of the cameras are either complete fools or they are plants here on the MSNBC blog lists to sow dissent and support the lies of their masters.
M. Fisher;
Ouch, say it like it is. I agree that the Senate needs to stay is session until all their work is done. The republicans have been stalling all along and now Mr. Reid is calling them on it. They have no shame, they are totally out in the open now as to what their real agenda is. They make no attempt to hide it anymore and continue to slap us in the face figuring we are just going to take it sitting down because they can hold bills hostage (a polite way of saying extortion) unless we bow down to them. This is not a good long term plan and will destroy us from the inside out if we allow it.
Looks like we have at least one "nay" vote regarding President Obama's move to govern in a more bipartisan fashion after the November 2nd beatdown...
Go get 'em, M.Fisher!
How about this? Senators AND House Members work their asses off right up until the day before Christmas like just about every other employed American. They can go home and take a few days to celebrate Christmas with their family and if things are not settled, they go back in session the next Monday and keep working until everything is resolved. It is called having a job. You don't get to tell your manager that it's Christmas, so I'd like every day off from the 15th to the end of the year. Why should the Senate (or the House for that matter) be any different?
Let's not forget that the reason the Senate is working so late in the year is because Republicans blocked and stalled everything possible, forcing the lame duck session to begin with. It's the equivalent of ball-hogging without a basketball shot-clock.
BTW, if Republicans are that opposed to passing policy in a lame duck session, then they had better criticize the 1997 Illinois Legislature for eliminating the straight ticket voting option, which allegedly favored Cook County Democrats in the state of Illinois.
Michael L
Excellent point. I mean they were still throwing their victory parties and delayed meeting with the President for a week to underscore their political clout.
That anyone believes Repubs have their interests at heart is to define insanity. They serve their corporate masters and money and that is all they serve. But they have no shame in wrapping their 'gifts' with American Flags, Christianity etc.
Now I haven't been a Christian for a little more than a decade now; but growing up in Lutheran private schools - we were always taught that the birth of Christ was important; but it is the RESURRECTION that is the true meaning of Christianity. Of course, I can't blame DeMint for thinking that opulent displays of gift giving and wealth distribution is THE end all be all Christian Holiday, that's probably how he was raised. But, I take exception to it.
Clara, I do not know about the Lutherans, but for Roman Catholics, Christmas is the holiest, and Easter is the most joyous.
I do not know DeMint's religion. . ..
Hey, mixed quarter bag, put down the medical marijuana. I always support bipartisanship because
a.) I live in the real world
b.) I'm an Independent.
Why not explain the word "bipartisan" to your publikan friends in DC? This is about getting work done on other bills not stalling just like the pub's have been doing for the last two years.
Listening to your pub friends in DC cry like little, spoiled children about working so close to Christmas while millions of hard working Americans are working their butts off up to or even through Christmas kind of makes me want to drag your bratty little friends outside of their marble halls by their ears and give them a good spanking.
I'm grateful every day that I am employed and have been through this recession but some of us Americans don't have jobs and would LOVE to have your spoiled pub friend's problems.
Clara KCMO
New Testament experts concluded long ago that Jesus wasn't even born on Christmas Day. They believe it was more likely in the early spring. Christmas is a pagan holiday adopted by the Catholic Church to give the ex-pagans an excuse to party at the time of year that they traditionally did so they wouldn't backslide into paganism, which was generally more fun. The Puritans, who are Sen. Jim DeMint's spiritual ancestors, banned Christmas entirely due to its pagan origins and because they disapproved of people having fun. They would have put him in stocks and thrown tomatoes at him if he wasn't working on a Christmas Day not falling on the Sabbath.
So let me get this straight.. All of you don't feel that the poor politicians should have to stay and get some work done (most of which should have been done earlier in the year) over their holiday break, but it was OK for the Democrats to stay, last year, until Christmas eve to pass that massively intrusive health care scam?
Am I also hearing you blame the Republican NO votes as a reason why the Democrats, with their majority, couldn't get anything done before the elections and their precious 1/2 month holiday break (vacation)?
Can't wait for you to blame the economical slump we're in on Santa Claus...
My mistake, M.Fisher-
For some reason, I failed initially to pick up on your enthusiasm for President Obama's BIPARTISAN deal with the GOP to extend all of the Bush tax cuts.
In your response to me, your unbridled joy and good-natured promoting of bipartisanship was more apparent. Judging from your even-handed...even (dare I say it?) gracious comments about the GOP, it's clear that you are indeed part of a rare breed-a true political "independent"!
Who knew...?
Happy Holidays!

Your "mistake" is that you have highly selective reading comprehension problems
Actually Houston I believe Fisher has a definition problem Independent yeah, happy Festivus Houston. Merry Christmas Mixedbag
well I was not included in the poll, and I voted for Obama to become president but he has not got my vote no more, The tax package stinks , and the rich just keep on getting richer.
Obama has been by far a horrible leader and President. Obama and the dems now want to rush through as many bills and earmarks as possible before the new congress takes effect next month. This is the change we voted for to have Washington do as it pleases without any regard to the American people and what they are doing with this country.
You mean the American people WANTED all that fillibustering that held up everything the REST of this year? RECORD use of filibusters, I might add?? Really?- the dems are wanting to 'rush' a few things through- i.e. actually accomplish something??
Shame on 'em.

Obama has been by far a horrible leader and President.
phillyboy801, apparently you haven't heard the Nixon Tapes.
Nixon Takes Aim at Jews, Blacks, Italians, etc. on Newly Released Audiotapes
Everyone from Iowa Rep. Steve King to Fox News personality Glenn Beck has insinuated that Barack Obama isn't a big fan of white people, but what if they had proof? What if they heard Obama (born to a white mother, by the way) on tape making disparaging remarks about whites?
The president (Nixon)appeared to have been an equal opportunity bigot, despite his assertion that he wasn't prejudiced. According to the tapes released by the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum last week, Nixon viewed a number of ethnic groups purely in terms of racial stereotypes. Consider his views on the Irish:
"What you always have to remember with the Irish is they get mean," he said. "Virtually every Irish I've known gets mean when he drinks. Particularly the real Irish."
As for Italians, Nixon called them "wonderful people," but people, nonetheless, who "don't have their heads screwed on tight" in his opinion.
As for blacks, the president (Nixon) believed that they were incapable of making any real strides over the next 50 years. Little did he know that 35 years after he made that remark, the U.S. would elect its first president of known African descent. While Nixon's secretary of state thought that blacks were "coming along," Nixon suggested that it would take African Americans 500 years to make any real progress and that the solution to the so-called Negro problem was to have blacks "inbred," although it's unclear just what Nixon meant by that.
The Jewish people, more than any other, are the group with which Nixon had the most problems.
"The Jews are just a very aggressive and abrasive and obnoxious personality," he said. He went on to say that Jews have a "common trait," which he described as their "latent insecurity."
Some members of the public may believe a politician's views on race are insignificant, but I'd argue otherwise. If a politician today shared Nixon's view that blacks are unlikely to make much progress in this country, it could affect which policies he supported. Why back programs likely to benefit the African-American community if you view the group as a hopeless lot? Likewise, a president with an anti-Semitic streak may allow that to interfere with his policies on Israel.
Nixon, for instance, never seriously considered urging the Soviet Union to allow Jews to emigrate and escape persecution there, the New York Times reported. He also hesitated to grant amnesty for draft-dodgers who fled to Canada to avoid fighting in Vietnam because he thought many of the young men who resorted to that measure were Jewish. If nothing else, these examples make it clear that a politician's bias against a particular ethnic group is a matter of grave concern.

Do you have any reputable slips of the tongue or a leaked email for President Obama on issues of race? No you don’t.

Well. if the obstustiost weren't there; then there would be no need to ram it in
Drive-by, when the senate was seated and they had the numbers to do so, why didn't they change the rules about the fake fillibuster? Each congressional session has the opportunity to adopt their own set of rules don't they?
The rich get richer on their money and poor get richer on our money. Obama is cooked with the left liberals, baked twiced with the conservatives, and boiled in oil with the Republicans. 2012? joke!
It is becoming clear that the "great experiment" known as America is coming to an end. This is like watching a slow motion train wreck. Both political "parties" are as corrupt as all get out. Bribery by so called "lobbyists" is rampant and done right out in the open. Nothing short of a revolution is going to change things now. The root of all this corruption is money. The Federal Reserve is at the heart of this nation's woes. It is the cancer which sickens this country. End the Fed and there may be hope. Do you realize not one CEO from a major bank has gone to prison yet? Rule of Law my a$$.
Sad thing Dave is no one is listening they can't seem to pull themselves away from the apron strings
I do hate everything Obama, and anything liberal. You are the same libs on this vine that's on every single one of them saying the same trash everyday. Probably punks in their parents basement just bowing to obammy and chanting YES WE CAN, well in Nov we showed you NO YOU CAN'T. In 2012 we will show you again.
Shut it down till January let the new congree handle this. These punks were voted out of office and shouldn't be allowed to Vote on anything.

Ooowee, that would be bad for the country and Repubs!!!
I believe Jesus said the rich and poor will be with us always; don`t remember him saying a thing about middle class.
There will always be those that cannot keep up and those that get far ahead. It is natural and even Darwinian. The debate is usually what to do about those at the extreme ends of society. For those of us in the middle, well, we are just normal and not usually worth the debate.
First off these polls are a bunch of BS and manipulated by the way the liberal media wants to brainwash people. The media elected Obama by brainwashing a public that does not think for themselves. Palin has a snowballs chance in hell of being nominated. Palin would be a Republican Obama. So the liberal media is using Palin as a distraction as the worse of two evils. Replublicans have started playing the Democrats game of throwing money out to minorites to look good in the court of public opinion. Throwing money at people who have a victim mentality and who use emotional blackmail to extort money is a bottemless pit. There is no accounting of this money given to all these pie in the sky liberal causes.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. It is wonderful to know that there is at least one other person who sees Palin as I do-a female, republican Obama.
A female, republican narcissist, who has no sense of self reflection, or she would never have accepted the vice presidential nomination, as Obama should not even have sought the democratic presidential nomination.
She is doing fine as a celebrity. Let her continue at what she does best.
And, I agree with you- if she runs, she will never get the nomination.
She is not going to run. If she did she would get clobbered. But she is smart enough to play on the recent celebrity and make some money along the way. My bet is she will play a role in fund raising and try and push the agenda more right wing without actually running.
Sure, just keep yapping away about Obama being the worse President ever!!! Ewwww. Don't look at Herbert Hoover and those that came before him, then there's Richard Nixon (whose entire Administration had to resign or were indicted and sent to prison), Gerald Ford (who even Jimmy Carter beat), Bush the First (who only got elected one term), and last but not least, Bush the Second (stole the first election and was in office on 9/11, and got us into this economic Mess with two unfunded wars), and you want to accuse Obama of being the worse President ever?? Yeah, just keep telling yourselves that, like anyone but you and the rest of the nitwits who listen to Fixed Noise Channel will believe it!
people are finaly finding out just what barrak hussein obama is, the would be emir of america. working with his non terrorist peace loving muslims he has set out to destroy america and is doing a good job of it and our representitives have bought into his line of bulls**t. thank god he has only two years left.
It appears that your hate has consumed you! Obama really pulled one off for the American people. Come 2012, it is he who will be able to tell the people that I stood up for you, kept your taxes from rising, kept the unemployment checks coming to those who were out of work by no fault of their own, but because of the things that the right did to eliminate regulations put in place to protect all of us, and their supply side economics which has been proven to be faux! Tax breaks for the rich don't create jobs, and if Obama continues to be successful in his stragies, the field will be leveled for the middle class to once again to be paid fair wages for a job done well. One step at a time . . . GO Obama! Boomer (Hussein) 812!
Ginico - And creating as much weatlth re-distribution as possible in 4 years! Right! Only 740 more days of this nonsense.
Where, exactly, has this wealth been re-distributed to/from?
You can quote rounded dollars. You need to show WHERE they went, and WHERE they were taken from.
OK-go....
Oh here we go Boomer...and I bet you're one of the pathetic loons who's STILL OBSESSED with O's birth certificate too. Even if the original doctor who delivered O in the HAWAII (BTW, in case your slow-moving, primordial rock of a brain is having trouble with the concept, YES HAWAII IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN PART OF AMERICA) hospital showed you the original document IN PERSON and went line by line, handprints, footprints and signatures of attendants and all, you'd STILL say he wasn't born here and "you've got proof". Your proof is your own willful ignorance to crow over something that's not AND NEVER WAS RELEVANT. Get over his middle name while you're at it too. You're looking exceedingly simple with your muslim/terrorist comments.
Ginico; Obama wasn't elected to keep the unemployment checks coming. If he had been successful in his stratagies the field would have indeed been leveled. Much like ground zero. Fortunately a group of representatives said no to his plans and was rewarded with an increase in their numbers in a turn over on a scale not seen since the 30s this last election. Where have you been? The fog is lifting and and I for one am looking forward to seeing the sun shine down on the people instead of the artificial light this admin has been shining up peoples a$$es.
drive-by-observer
When you progressively tax somebody earning $1,000,000 with a 35% tax rate that equals $350,000. And then give back $1,000 (annual Fed Tax liability) to somebody earning $50,000. The $50,000 household is positive 2% from the Gov't. Where did that money come from?
I am for a flat tax and eliminating EICs and the like so folks actually pay Federal Income tax no matter what their income level. To be clear, if $50,000 household only paid $2,000 (annual Fed Tax Liability) in Federal Income taxes - it is better then what we have today!
All who think there is no leftist media bias, ponder this.
The media and Hollywood had "A gala" for the president for Clinton (Clinton-Liberal Democrat). Luther Vandros ever sang him his favorite song "If you can't be with the one you love....love the one you're with while he was getting hummers from Ms. Lewinsky?"
Now the media and Hollywood is hosting a "Holliday" celebration on the tube for the Obamas (Ultra liberal Democrat)
Never did any of this for Republican presidents...hmmm

That's because a Republican president would start a get rid of the channels that show the gala campaign like they're doing now for NPR and the Smithsonian Museum.
The republicans owns all media !!!!!!!!!always have lied on tv radio newspapers to get their way always!!! thats why Obama won america is tired of the lies!!!!republicans are public enemy #1
Public enemy #1. You should probably change your screen name "Pastor", really???? Tired of the lies? How about already tired of the "no change"??? Or can you please tell me what makes Obama so great, because I'm not seeing it? Obama lost me when he put Janet Napolitano in charge of Homeland Security when she couldn't even protect the borders of Arizona....way to go!!
When I turn on my car radio, and slowly scan through all the stations, the ones that are not playing music, or sports formats, are 'talk radio' stations. EVERY ONE of them is putting out CONSERATIVE points of view.
How's that Liberal Bias????
That's not Liberal bias drive-by. That's the American consumer rejecting the liberal ideal by not listening to lousy programing like "Air America" The liberals just couldn't put together a package that the public cared to listen to. I will give the liberals credit for marketing another phony in 2008 though. But now that the lead based Chinese paint is wearing off people are starting to see the poor quality of the product they were sold. I expect that that paint will keep flaking off, no matter how much whitewash the liberal pundits throw at him.
Pastor Alexandria - If the Repubs own the airwaves, then brainwashing should be working. Obviously, it isn't by your own accord! But I can keep wishing...only 740 more days!
Except there are not peace loving muslims. We are infidels to them and have been told all their life to kill the infidels.
