GOP watch: The Crying Game

Gail Collins wonders how Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton would have been perceived if they cried openly like Speaker-in-waiting John Boehner has. “The most arresting moment [in the “60 Minutes” interview] came when Boehner told Stahl he can no longer make visits to schools, or even look at the little kids on the playground, because he immediately starts crying. That had me alarmed. I thought there was going to be some terrible story about an ailing child that would then force me to have warm and sympathetic thoughts about John Boehner.”

“But no. The reason, Boehner finally choked out, was because ‘making sure these kids have a shot at the American dream, like I did, is important.’ We will stop again briefly to imagine what would have happened if Nancy Pelosi, upon being elected speaker, had confessed on national TV that she was unable to visit schools in her district because the sight of little children made her break into sobs.”

Priebus the front-runner? Some have considered Wisconsin GOP chairman Reince Priebus a front runner for RNC chair, but a Republican working for another candidate sent CNN photos trying to capitalize on Priebus’ ties to Michael Steele. The photo gallery shows various shots of Steele and Priebus together, titled “Dream Team” and with snarky captions like, “The good ol' days: Reince flies Chairman Steele around America in style, vouching for his leadership" and “The whip operation under the guidance of Reince," showing Priebus working to get Steele elected in 2009.

Henry Barbour, Haley’s nephew and a committeeman from Mississippi, defended Priebus, saying, per CNN: "People tend to shoot at the frontrunner, and he is the frontrunner. "I am sure some of Reince's opponents are shooting at him because they view him as the competition."

“Former Sen. Norm Coleman (Minn.) won’t run against Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele but won’t endorse him either,” Roll Call writes. “Coleman cautioned his decision not to challenge Steele should not be interpreted as an endorsement, suggesting that he might very well back another candidate in the RNC leadership elections scheduled for Jan. 14. Coleman declined to explicitly criticize Steele or call for him to step aside.” He said, “My not running is not an endorsement of the chairman,” Coleman said, adding: “I’m still willing to provide service to my party.”

this man is a joke, not to be able to visit kids in school, hey john, let's keep legislating education, you know so much about it, you don't visit, you don't have a clue, but keep trying to tell teachers how to best do their jobs, cry about that you whimpering fool.

Say whatever you want about the Republicans because they are a very wierd bunch but they are excellent at politics and voting as a bloc.

John Boehner can cry all he wants, he knows that everyone will vote as a bloc. There is not (1) Democratic leader that can get all democrats to vote the same on anything. Dems are victims of their own varying opinions and that's why significant legislature just languishes.

Perhaps some Dems need to start crying

He cries about children getting a chance at the American dream. Right. Then he blows his nose, and votes against giving the children's fathers unemployment benefits.

His face should be beside the definition of hypocrit in the dictionary.

Is he crying for the 9/11 workers? He and his Republican buddies voted down health care for them, yet when it suits their political needs, they will drag 9/11 out.

And yet people buy into this crap. No wonder the literacy rate in this country is sinking.

right? someone speaking at a radio talk show had indicated mr. boehnner's behaviours bespeaks of personality disorders. in fact, many in the right wing seem to display personality disorders. ever look at that blank expression on michelle bachman? or that pinched expression of dis-satisfaction in their eyes, nose, and pursed mouthes -- it's really disturbing!

      #1.3 - Thu Dec 16, 2010 2:49 PM EST

The case of gender is legitimate. If Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi were sobbing as much as Boehner (or Glenn Beck), they would lose all credibility. Where are the Teapublican females and their "man up" BS on this? Look at some of these women like Bachmann and Palin. It's obvious their appeal is their looks because they don't have anything between their ears. Even race -- if Obama was as erratic as McCain he would be seen as "uppity" as an "angry black man."

Whether it's qualifications/merit or emotional stability, the rest of us must have an impressive resume and personal references (along with credit checks and who knows what) to get an every day job. It's fair to expect leaders to be, well leaders and good examples to the people.

But the ladies on The View made a verygood point about when/why Boehner sobs. If you notice, it's always when he talks about himself, and how he had to work hard to get where he is, etc. It is never really pure empathy for those less fortunate in our country. This really is the problem with Boehner and the entire Republican Party.

I would hope it is the opposite of Fox, Limbaugh, Beck, and Palin. I'll give them credit though. They know how to suck people into their hatred and make a LOT of money doing it. Your money.

Maybe Boehner should just go to the rich kids schools so that he could tell those kids that with the tax cuts for the rich, now their daddies can get them a couple of new cars.

Delay, obstruct, and deflect. These are the tools the Party of NO use, and it's pathetic. I understood when the tan man choked up when he realized he'd soon be Speaker of the House. After that, it's clearly just another gimmick. I heard that McConnell is starting to resort to choking up for the press, too. Gimme a freaking break.

Uhhhhhh, maybe along those lines he should talk with his Senate friends about the potential of what nuclear weapons can do to a child's future and their aspirations toward the American dream and get them to ratify the START Treaty as a small gesture towards that destination.

Thanks for the crocodiles John, nice.

Wow! Proof you need to hunt around to fill 60 minutes, huh? Big deal, and the vast majority of Americans think "big deal" as well. Sure, I understand you are all about the politics ofi t. Some Republicans complained when some Democrats cried, so now you need to cry hypocrisy. Pathetic. It's politics and most Americans don't care about it, they can see through it, what they care about are policies.

Personally, I can appreciate anyone getting emotional. It shows they care. I may disagree, but at least I know they are passionate in their position.

Once again, MSNBC doing the Democrats bidding.

          Robb-

Seems like your Bullpucky detector is on the fritz. I suggest you take it into the shop and get it fixed.

Having lived through a horrific experience (thankfully many years ago) involving a very narcissistic and sociopathic individual, I know that one of the hallmarks of this personality type is the ability to choke up and shed tears at will. Along with lying like a dog, scoring flat on MMPI tests, and other frightening attributes, these individuals have absolutely no remorse or genuine feelings.

Check out the book: The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout. It is shocking and enlightening at the same time.

Now, McConnell is doing it? What is this, a Republican virus?

No, just the latest in a big grab-bag of ploys to ensnare the sheeple.

How does crying show that Boehner cares? How do you cry one minute but vote no on helping middle-class people who are unemployed?

Yes he's definately unstable and unqualified to be speaker. It will be very interesting to see how he handles his responsibilites in that post. He'd better start reading notes from Speaker Pelosi's tenure on how to be an effective and productive house leader.

What I found fascinating on the clip I saw of him on 60 Minutes, (couldn't watch the whole thing or I would have been puking for the rest of the night) was the look on his wife's face when she was asked if he cries all the time. It was priceless the way she looked away from him then said he has a big job coming up. She looked like she called him the ass I wanted to. Wish I could get a clip of that to keep.

Boehner can't go into schools because his conscience is beating the hell out of him for denying those very children: a quality education, free lunches for needy students, a living wage for teachers, and adequate funding for education. He was also probably drunk. His wife sure did seem to be embarassed by his lack of mettle. I wonder how his crying spells play out in the bars and clubs in Ohio? I know that the sight made me laugh very hard.

Sorry guys, obviously not everyone is far right conservative, but it must be hard dealing with the crushing realization that most of America doesn't agree with the far left's policies. Its hard for the far left liberals to acknowledge that they are the fringe group that consists of mainly academics, handout recipients, and much of the "old guard" media.

But keep telling yourselves that November wasn't a big deal... and then flip on Rachel Maddow for comforts sake.

That is a foolish statement. Most of America doesn't agree with the conservatives or they would have won the majority in the Senate. They didn't. Come the next election, the rest of the fools who fell for the lies the conservatives spewed and scared them, will come to their senses. Reality will certainly come to hurt.

The rabid bullying to get the money they want will come back to bite them in the ass. At least we won't have to listen to you far right conservatives barking anymore about the deficit. Your group pushed this country over the edge. Be proud.

My only problem with Priebus getting the nod to head the national committee is losing him as head of the WI GOP. But if he can pull off on a national scale the same sort of election he helped bring us locally I guess it would be worth it.

Yes they (GOP) vote in a bloc. They have learned how to lie and scheme together. This is why we should be afraid. We should be very afraid. And anyone who fakes a cry or actually sobs in that fashion (male or female, Rep or Dem) is unstable. I believe it is the latter.

He's a thief, hypocrite, liar, deceitful. He has robbed the American people of their dream. Starve the poor, let the elite steal whatever they can get their hands on. Deny our children a decent education to further themselves in life.

Screw Boehner's idea of the American dream. What he has accomplished should make him cry. The rest of American is crying as well.

I hope to hell he gets booted and goes back home to his dream.
