Obama hails Senate tax vote

President Obama made his third trip to the White House briefing room in a week to deliver two minutes of remarks, hailing the Senate's vote to begin debate on the tax deal. At last count, some 80 senators -- Democrats and Republicans -- had voted to proceed on the bill. Eleven senators voted "nay" and only one of those was Republican.

Calling the deal he announced last week a "substantial victory for middle class families," Obama noted the bipartisan support it received in the Senate and urged the House of Representatives to "act quickly on this important matter."

I never thought I'd hear John Ensign described as a "hero"...

    Not at First Read, anyway.

Guess who they are and what they stand for is unimportant to some. As long as they agree with you at that moment they apparently become "Real American heroes."

    Oh my.

President Obama met with Kobe Bryant & the LA Lakers today. However, it's not only the NBA Champions that he met. This is how the President was spending his day - talking and hanging out with children. You know, the sell out president. Who only cares for the rich. I guess. This is the man people want out after one term. What were those people doing today, besides badmouthing President Obama all day? It's become a career for some.

Thank you BWD for giving us some balance against the bitter. Kids sure do look up to him. Reminds me of me when I was a kid and JFK was our President. President Obama is their role model now. Nice having a Leader children can look up to. It can change their entire lives going forward. Sometimes we can't always focus on the rich. Sometimes we need to take a pause and see how he's maybe, just maybe, lighting a fire for children we'll never know. That's what is important.

The President is a liar, he said he was going to let the tax cuts for the wealthy expire. He did not, end of conversation, let,s just call him GEORGE W. OBAMA. I voted for him, and I donated to his campaign. Never again. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Crybabies. Did you think he would get everything he wanted every time? Do you understand anything about how governing works?

        #4.3 - Tue Dec 14, 2010 9:52 AM EST

I thought he would at least work on the things he campaigned on...letting the tax cuts expire, transparency, getting rid of the lobbyists.

I understand how governing works. I also understand the Chicago machine, and lying out both sides of your mouth while campaigning.

Fact is, he is failing in his promises and failing to EARN my vote.

A banana republic is also characterised by a ruling class that curtails people's personal freedoms and is moving towards a heavyhanded military dictatorship under the excuse of fighting guerrilla (or terrorist) opposition groups or enemies. Moreover, the fact that the ruling class or the elite comes from different political parties isn't a relevant factor in classifying a country as a banana republic; what is relevant is the determination of the elite, irrespective of which party its members belong to, to shift wealth from the majority of the people (the masses) to themselves, usually through simply printing money and incurring chronic budget deficits, and frequently also through senseless warfare.

I guess you should never have voted for him in the first place. There are always false 'Messiahs' saying

that they come to save the people. All he wanted was PRESTIGE. He got it and four years.

The Truly sad part of this "compromise" is it shows how shallow our political debate has become. In Wisconsin a true American hero in Russ Feingold was beat up by a two-bit plastics manufacturer who paid $7 million in his family fortune to buy an election about 1.) The national debt largely created by Bush's unfunded war in Iraq, and 2.) The so-called collapse of our Social Security funds. But when push came to shove Republicans like Mitch McConnell and John Boehner don't give a fig about either of those. They will vote with middle of the road Democrats to raise the national debt by 10 percent or $1.3 trillion in just two years and create a 33 percent reduction in current employee payroll deductions for long term SS funding just to win over the masses for the 2012 elections! The word "hypocrites" is on my lips for all who support this travesty.

Hey Bookem Danno, You need to get something correct about the current deficit. While it was large during W, since taking office Oblama has tripled what it was when he took over. So who is the real spender?

                    Reply#6 - Tue Dec 14, 2010 12:42 AM EST

No, President Obama has put all of the spending into the budget. Bush kept both wars and other items 'off the books' and did not count those as part of the deficit. In other words, Bush was dishonest with the deficit, President Obama is not.

I realize that is a complex concept that you may not understand, so suffice it to say that you are wrong about what you said.

The budget defecit was projected over 1 Trillion before President Obama took office. He didn't triple anything. Just another false talking point from the right.

When these two parties come together it is to screw the people. Obama is dead and if the democratic party passes this bill they are dead. We don't need two republican parties. We better form a strong third party or go in the streets with millions. We are headed for depression and chaos. If we don't act soon America is gone.

It was a deal that had to be made, If the Democrats wanted to make a better law they had 2 years to pass it. President Obama knew that the tide was turning and he had to make a move. This will be better in the long run and wil help President Obama significantly in the coming of years.
