The New York Times says “a hefty portion of the $858 billion tax package will benefit middle- and upper-middle-income Americans — precisely the demographic that felt neglected the last two years as the White House and Congress focused on the major health care law and on helping the unemployed and people facing foreclosure. These new tax breaks are in addition to the cuts Mr. Obama had always planned to maintain on all but the highest incomes, and they could pay big political dividends to Mr. Obama and other Democrats in 2012 — a point that the president and some senior advisers are counting on, and one reason that they were willing to give in to Republican demands to extend all Bush-era tax rates.”
“President Barack Obama's approval ratings have sunk to the lowest level of his presidency, so low that he'd lose the White House to Republican Mitt Romney if the election were held today, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll,” McClatchy’s Thomma writes. “The biggest reason for Obama's fall: a sharp drop in approval among Democrats and liberals, apparently unhappy with his moves toward the center since he led the party to landslide losses in November's midterm elections. At the same time, he's gained nothing among independents.” Obama’s approval is just 42%/50%. He loses to Romney 46%-44%, beats Huckabee 47%-43%, handily beats Sarah Palin 52%-40%.
“House Republicans don’t take power for another three weeks, but the White House is already engaged in a behind-the-scenes charm offensive designed to build relationships with incoming committee chairmen before they become powerful adversaries,” Politico writes. “The GOP chairmen are getting congratulatory phone calls from President Barack Obama, and private meetings with Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Attorney General Eric Holder.”
“A Virginia federal judge is expected to issue a decision on the constitutionality of the healthcare reform law Monday, a court employee confirmed to The Hill late Friday afternoon.”
“Richard Holbrooke, the US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, underwent more surgery yesterday to fix a tear in the large artery that moves blood from the heart, the State Department said. The operation came after 20 hours of surgery that ended Saturday,” the Boston Globe writes.

A "charm" offensive?? At least obama is starting to get a glimmer of what bipartisanship is about.
Just love it when the libs insist that obama stand up and make a stand. Seems like the dissenting liberals are showing us that they ARE NOT for John Q public like they say they are! LOL!!
Obaqma has done the best a man can do with the mess he was handed . the Admiinstration before him was the sorryest goup of people ever put in office and all themselves the president men. a total disgrace
Discussing what the approval rating of the president right now is ridiculous! I don't believe that poll anyway because what it doesn't say is that when given the choice to vote for Romney or the president in 2012 do anyone really believes the Democrats will not vote for their own. Get a grip on reality, because the economy should be doing better by then and most of all the Democrats will try to keep The White House.
I'd like to know how many black, hispanic and asians were polled. I predict that not only will Obama get re-elected but will do so by a large number. I predict that Obama will go down in history as one of if not the best president who ever occupied 1600 Pennsylvania ave.
So you are saying that he will get re-elected because of race and not on his merits or accomplishments. The only way he will ever be the best of anything is if the Republicans take him there despite his stupidity
Did the other presidents get re elected because of their race?
@openmind266 - despite your screenname you are anything BUT open-minded.
Good response and accurate!
there is not or has ever been a Republican that is as smart as Barack Obama . the republicans try to say or compare Reagan to a democrat an you can not fine a democrat that is as dumb as Reagan was he slept thru 8 yrs orf his terms and he don't no what went on during this time . he was the very man that started the mess that President Obama has had to ndeal with the past 2 yrs. he sign the bill to deregulate the stock market and it just took it a while to catch up . if it had not been for Bill Clinton being between the two Bushs this meltbown would have come 8yrs sooner. reagan was one of the worst president for the middleclass people we ever had in my life time. which started with JFK untill now. Clinton was the best . Bush was the sorrest for the country his people in his adminstration can't even go over seas without the fear of being arested inclunding the vice president that is a disgrace an we as Americans should go somewhere and put our heads in the sand in shame for our government during the bush years 2001- 2008.
I am with HOYER on being against this deal it is good for the rich man and the GOP . Obama nos better than to let the GOP get iits ft. in the door on SS they have been looking for an opening like this for 75 yrs and Obama lays it in their laps . I want vote for him again if this thing goes thru. I won't vote for a Republican either I can't do that . that would be going to far .
