They all deserve a lump of coal in their Christmas stockings. It's time to head over to the Dew Drop and Watch Bernie on C-span.
Bartender, Sangria on ice Please!
Thanks, Domenico, Mark and FR crew for letting us have a fun week in our tete a tetes.
Happy Weekend all!
Well, you can tell that we are rapidly approaching the holidays… there sure are a whole lot more fruit cakes around here than usual! Lol
Many many thanks to our hospitable hosts/moderators Mark – Domenico & Ali who keep FR thee best place on the web for the political version of the Hatfield’s & McCoy’s!
Let’s head on over to the Dew Drop Inn… hope the fireplace is blazing and some Christmas caroles playing on the juke box!
Since there’s a chill in the air I have a new recipe for the bartender to try out called Liquid Snickers…
1 cup of hot chocolate
1 1/2 ounce of Frangelico liqueur
Topped off with a healthy dose of whipped cream
First round is on me!
PS: Pat, Boston – they’ve cancelled the blizzard here on Sunday but are still calling for below zero wind chill temp’s! It’s going to be an interesting game! ;0)
Interesting recipe there Feisty! Of course...it doesn't sound quite as good down here! I am on my way to watch a local boat show with the kiddos, so I think a margarita is more than likely in order. That Bears - Pats game sounds like one where just the ball hitting your skin is gonna hurt. Should be a good one.
Domenico...outstanding review as always and once again, you guys had me laughing at the end. Keep up the good work.
Everyone else...have an outstanding weekend.
Damn, Feisty- that drink sounds prett sweet and sugar-y to me. Kind of like the kind of pi... Uh, GIRL I'd like to take to the ol' malt-shop!
Hey, IR- I'm thinking maybe a Wallbanger to ward off this chill, and maybe a little 'Sing Me Back Home', or 'Mama Tried'.
See y' at the DDI, but don't want a DWI. Think I could get one of these righties to be my designated driver, and drive us off the road on the way home (again)?
Oh SURE rub it in why don't you? ;0p Are the kidlets getting excited yet?
As for the game... I'll be watching in HD curled up next to the fireplace with a hot toddy! I get chilled just watching them out there with their arms bare! BRRRRRRRR!
You have a wonderful weekend as well!
PS: Did you ever get that joke I sent you? The one about women?
OK...guilty for rubbing it in. My bad! But it's one of the benefits of living down here I suppose! ;-)
Kids are fired up about the holidays...that's for sure.
Missed the joke though. :-( Sorry!
Thanks First Read hosts for another week of discussion and some sparing. Friends and foes: we're all in this together. The politicians seem to have forgotten that the best legislation results from working together. It isn't about who wins but how they play the game. Congress seems to have lost their ability to play the game fairly--compromise built this country, is a necessary part of every business, is a part of everyday family life--no one ever gets everything their way.
See you at the Dew Drop, time to unwind and let the politicians on both sides of the aisle continue their childish behavior while Rome (America) burns.
Fiesty. I'll have one of those Liquid Snickers!
They've cancelled the big snow for us, too, now expect 1-2" but more north and east, we'll see if the weather folks get it right. Have a great weekend everyone!
I'll tell you what President Obama wants for Christmas...
Passage of his Bush tax cuts extension compromise bill.
I think Santa's going to deliver on this Xmas wish.
DBO -- Does the malt shop date bring her own leash & whipped cream?
Grimey -- No problemo I was only kidding! I figured you never got it because I would of heard from you if you did... You are the ONLY Republican I thought worthy of sharing it with! I'll resend it!
Jody -- UGH! I hear you! Are you suppose to get the freezing rain first? Ought to make for some interesting driving!
"Leash and Whipped cream"??
Oh no- I have to leave NOW!
My grandma used to tell me if I entertained such nasty thoughts, God would turn me into a pillar of salt just like in that bible story..... and I feel something getting a little stiff already!!
MBAG: I wanted to thank you for touching base with me this week. I know there are some really concerned intelligent Republicans/Independents out there. You are among them. I look forward to your comments. Have a nice weekend.
This by the way was written by a liberal a few minutes ago to the attention of Senator Brown who is assisting Sen. Sanders with his speech today (which I applaud). Maybe another D Senator will take this up on Monday, but I won't hold my breath.
"... all of this could have been done sooner. Instead the Democratic cowards didn't want to "fight" for it before the election. Now that time is running out and the senate couldn't pass President Obama's initial tax plan, you now claim he shouldn't have offered an alternative by making a deal and you are now ready to stand and fight.
The Democrats punted to the president, asked for leadership, he made a deal and gave it back to you guys and now everyone is criticizing him for taking a deal so he can move on to other pressing items to pass before the new congress takes over."

It's been a tough week but the Holidays are upon us. I love seeing all the lights and XMAS trees. It's so pretty.
To all my "D" friends and friendly "R" commentors - have a wonderful weekend. Feisty, not you. You know, I have a home team I have to root for. Lol.
___________
If you like upbeat fun XMAS songs, this one is for you. The Beach Boys - Little Saint Nick. Turn your volume up - up - up. And dance around the room. With a drink of course.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w055lgDGVXo
Well a way up North where the air gets cold,
There's a tale about Christmas that you've all been told
And a real famous cat all dressed up in red
And he spends his whole year workin out on his sled
It's the little Saint Nick
Just a little bobsled, we call it old Saint Nick
But she'll walk the toboggan with a 4-speed stick
She's a candy apple red with a ski for a wheel
And when Santa hits the gas, man, watch her peel, It's the Little Saint Nick
Run run reindeer, run run reindeer
Run run reindeer, run run reindeer
He don't miss no one
And hauling through the snow at a frightening speed
With a half a dozen reindeer with a Rudy to lead
He's gotta wear his goggles cuz the snow really flies
And he's cruisin every path with a little surprise, It's the Little Saint Nick, Oh Merry Christmas
Christmas comes this time each year,
Christmas comes this time each year!
Good Idea... of course you have to have the Santa hat on! lol
Chuck Berry's Run Run Rudolph is also a must!
Eggnog anyone?
Oh... and DBO... BAD boy... VERY BAAAAAD boy! ;0)))
Sounds like FR is trapped in a house of mirrors. Also sounds like she lives in one of those armpits of the nation that gets way too cold.
First Read - you all dealt with Copenhagen and climate gate, but continue to ignore Cancun. Why do you hate Al Gore and the IPCC? Don't you care about the polar bears?
Good point Spanky.
It really doesn't matter though. Throw an environmentalist out the front door and Obama climbs through the side window.
He recently blocked more exploration in Alaska because someone said the polar bears are endangered. (How many polar bears are killed on rigs and why are they not better trained in safety procedures?)
Anyway, he has killed the new industry in the Gulf - deep and shallow water, the east coast and moving on to Alaska. Anybody noticing the gas prices?
Oh well, at least we don't need jobs, the economy is great and everyone is making more than enough money to cover rising energy cost, we don't have any dependence on foreign countries, or trade deficit problems and all those green jobs are working out great, right?
Polar bears are great, but they won't burn in my gas tank. Anybody up for $6.00 a gallon???
Not to brag, but I kind of saw this one coming two years ago. So Recently purchased a 2010 Honda Fit. Great MPG both in town and on the highway. Going to San Diego over the Xmas holidays and maybe do some deep-sea fishing. About a five hour drive from Vegas. Merry Christmas everyone. You betcha.
what they want? what they want? they work for us!
rights are given to the citizenry by God. we relinquish some of them to the State, the State in turn relinquishes to the Fed.
what they want? their souls back no doubt.
Hey, guys, I am back from family fun just in time to head to the Dew Drop Inn. Feisty; save me one of those Liquid Snickers, it sounds PERFECT after having been outside today. What oh what have we learned this week? Well, for starters, we owe Palin an apology, doggone if she wasn't right (and about as far to the right as you can get without falling off the earth) about those Death Panels! They really DO want to off Grandma, along with everyone else who may have some sort of challenge, she just didn't tell us that it was the fringe right wing that actually wanted to do that! Go figure. Also, our dear friends on the right tell us that we "ought to get back to the Constitution" but never mention that they intend on re-writing it, to do things like make state nullification lawful. Our local nutcase, Michelle Bachmann, has taken it upon herself to lecture the President on how many times he must mention God in a speech, to prove to her that he is Christian enough to pass muster. Again, with the right wings' singular contempt for the protections in the Constitution regarding speech, and religion, it just makes you wonder if they have ever read the thing to begin with. Apparently, though that same document contains the Equal Protection Clause, our right wing friends are horrified that it might actually mean that they must quit discriminating against our gay brothers and sisters. See, you can't do that because the Constitution, that document that you claim you love says you can't, disappointing, I know. IR, hope Bing Crosby is on nice and mellow. I think we need to kick back from the drama, and reflect on how truly lucky we are. We have a storm moving in here, so might need to stay in the back room at the Dew Drop if that's all right. My thanks to my hosts, it has been another fascinating week on First Read.
Hiya NDD!!
Speaking of Palin... just heard her babbling on about being weak, impotent & limp...
How DARE she talk about her husband that way! lol
I don't know about you but I'm tired of these hillbilly's airing their dirty silk boxers!
Bartender... get my good friend here her drink will ya?
I told you the last time she offered Todd 'super sex', he said he'd rather have the soup, didn't I?
Thanks, Feisty, and Drive by, you scamp...I'm still laughing!
Feisty,
I hate to confess, but I am appalled by Palin.
I happened to stumble across her show in Alaska and to go Caribou hunting with a varmint caliber rifle that is not even zeroed is disgusting! Her rifle etiquette is atrocious, I can't believe she didn't muzzle Grandpa.
I should probably ask about Old Navy Dude since you mentioned weak, impotent & limp, (in an effort to preempt the obligatory shot), but I won't. (Did I just do a Democrat trick?) Anyway your talented and experienced enough to do something with dirty silk boxers.
Have a good weekend.

Help me out.....
so, where exactly, does the Constitution explicitly say that gays have the Constitutional right to demonstrate, or engage in homosexual acts that would risk unit cohesion and military capability?
Bottom line, 1/3 of troops in combat arms are against it and would consider leaving if this passes. Just 20% would represent a loss 250,000 combat troops in a time of war. That is what is actually horrifying.
After 17 years, why the rush in the lame duck session? What the military imperative, or is it just a liberal social issue that has nothing to do with the war on terror?
Why not take time and get it right? You against that?
Yes. I am against that bobby. I am always against that which creates two classes in this society. Those who engage in the approved sexual practices, as understood by some very limited people, and those who don't. Where do I find that there are protections for gay citizens? Two places: remember these words if you can dredge them out of your memory of sleeping through government class: We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal... Nothing there about "except for them gay folks", right bobby? Also, in the Equal Protection clause, which the right wing wants to re-write. They don't like offering protection to all, just to themselves and those who look like them. The thing that amuses me the most about this is that the military is expected to follow orders. They do that daily, and I am sure that they do things that they don't always like to do. Well, this will be an order. They must follow it. They have always served with gays, this changes nothing except that gays must not be discriminated against. But, there are those who like discrimination, apparently you agree with them.
I asked:
Your response was:
I appreciate your pathetic attempt at self absorbed sanctimony, but that was the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution. Regardless, nothing explicit and in effect no answer.
Anyway, yea all men are created equal and have the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but they don't have to join the military. If they choose to - they don't get to do whatever they want. The military is not about individual equality, it's about unit cohesion and military effectiveness. The military is asexual, you don't get to demonstrate or engage in sexual acts, gay or straight, that are a risk to good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability. You may be created equal, but you don't get to be overweight, you don't get to be pregnant, you don't get to smoke pot, you don't get to have a scotch whenever you want, on and on and on. Heck, my primary concern, the argument made above regarding troops in combat arms, you don't even get to be female. Doesn't work. Neither does your argument.
And what exactly, or how big of a problem is it? In the past 5 years, less than 1% of all discharges not due to completion of service or retirement were for homosexuality. Most were junior personnel with very little time in the military. More than 98% of those of the discharges for homosexuality were honorable discharges (they still got their education and other benefits). How many of the 634 discharged last year just decided that the military wasn't a good fit for them and just wanted out. How many gays met someone, fell in love and decided they didn't want to be away from their lover, or just decided they didn't want to go Afghanistan/Iraq? Heck for that matter there probably more than a few hetros that said they were gay just to get out of going for all we know.
What is really crazy is that according to the survey, only 15% of gays would want their units to know they were gay! 85% are in effect against it, or don't care.
I have nothing whatsoever against gays serving, but it is a fact that there is no military reason, only a liberal, political reason to repeal DADT (BTW - The words "Don't ask don't tell" are not even in the legislation). The functional military imperative of the military to fight. Why does the survey in effect ignore the voice of those that actually do the fighting? Why risk losing 250,000 combat troops in a time of war? Why not take time and determine the effect on recruiting, retention and combat unit effectiveness? Why not take the time and come up with something better? Why not diversity - Marines can keep DADT and Navy can repeal it? Why the rush?
I asked before:
You said you were against taking the time and getting it right!
Pretty pathetic. But, I guess this is what Obama was talking about when he was describing the sanctimonious purists who only feel good about themselves and cling to their ideal positions at the expense of what is good for the country.
He IS good with words. He described you perfectly.
No, bobby, we feel good because we UNDERSTAND what the Founders intended for this country, which is something alien to you. We know that the Founders believed what they said "all men are created equal'. What that means, bobby, is even one day of a group of citizens being treated as second class, without all the rights that all of us have is too much. Yes. This has gone on far too long. It isn't a matter of having to "get something right", that is a pathetic excuse to make consciences clear with what is clearly discriminatory policy. Define that bobby, when is it "right"? When every last person in this world finally catches up with the idea that discrimination is wrong? If it were YOUR rights being impacted, would you accept the lame excuse that we have to "get it right?" Here is what's right, and a child would get this since it hits their basic understanding of fairness: There are straights serving in the military who are allowed to talk about the people that they love without having to worry about being outed and kicked out of the military. There are gay soldiers who are fearful about being found out, and forbidden to discuss their families, though they are of equal importance to them. Either everybody gets to talk about their lives, including their partners or no one does, you pick. I am desperately glad that I know better than to think that someone's own personal rights can wait...until I feel that we "got it right". I feel very sorry for you and anyone that thinks the way you do.
Better yet, booby . . . err, bobby, where in the Constitution does it say that it is okay to discriminate against anyone who isn't straight?
And it isn't 1/3 of the military, it is 1/3 of the Marines who, while being part of the Navy department, are only 1 of 5 services and the smallest service at that (or is it the Coast Guard? either way it is smaller than either the Navy, the Army or the Air Force). The other services are much less against it.
But all of that is moot, discrimination against any group because of their sexual preferences is wrong so it shouldn't matter if 33% or 99% of the people in the services are against it. Besides, if there are people in the military who are against it, even as a straight person I would not want them serving with me. They are bigots (kind of like you, booby) and I do not trust bigots.
Wow, Matthew, right to the point as always!
Yet, you demonstrated in your post above that you don't understand the difference between the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. You aren't very good at this.
You say that conservatives try to rewrite the Constitution, yet when we ask - you can't say what it explicitly says , but go with the "we know what the founding fathers intended and you don't."
You talk about them being second class citizens and being discriminated against because of DADT. I guess you know more about the Constitution than Clinton, House and Senate that passed the law and the judges on the appellate court and the Supremes who declined to overturn, also.
I gave you the law above. That is not what the law says. (Remember the first question?) I also mentioned that 85% of gays don't want the others in their units to know they are gay. Fearful of being found out and kicked? Yea right, 3rd graders knew Brad Manning was gay - you saying the guys in his unit didn't know, especially with the fairy wand on his desk and singing Lady Gaga songs? Too funny. Did I mention you aren't very good at this?
Anyway, this is another waste of time. You cannot even address the point of my comments much less offer a sensible argument. ".
Thanks for the laugh and btw - I don't care about your personal problems and pathology.
Matthew,
The last time I saw something from you, you were talking about what a party Stolli and pickles is and having some fantasy about Michele Bachman and duct tape. Been awhile. I didn't know if you were embarrassed or had ordered a Bachman blow-up and had been busy.
Anyway Pickles, I see you still have a reading comprehension deficit. Didn't say 1/3 of the military - I said 1/3 of troops in combat arms. I would suggest you get someone to help you with the distinction, and while you are at it - the point of my comments. But don't waste your time with newday - she's clueless and has less comprehension capability than your Bachman blow-up.
BTW - booby? I have asked before and you have never answered, but how old are you?
Dude grow up.
Poor bobby: here is what you cannot possibly understand. Doesn't matter what "law" you come up with, it does not override Constitutional protections. Here is what else you cannot understand, and it is the hallmark of your favorite word, narcissism. You do not set up the parameters for others. I never said the line "all men are created equal" came from the Constitution. I said I found those protections in two places. Two, bobby, to help you out is more than one. I gave you the respect that you MIGHT know where those two places were. But, in your narcissistic fashion (by the way, I see why you and NJ get along, you are very much alike.) you fit them into your parameters, desperately hoping that at long last, you can best me at an argument. Doesn't work, and I see why you are so frustrated. No. There are protections for equality for ALL. As to the military? I simply do not care HOW they feel about it. Just like the officers don't care if they want to go to war or not. We don't take a vote from them on anything else, why would we care about this? Unless it makes YOU bobby, more comfortable with your prejudice. But, this is your history. You start a debate with me, largely because you are still trying to win, you get your rear kicked again, and then you become insulting, also by the way, part of the definition of your favorite word....narcissism.
One more thing, bobby, I see that you take Matthew on for calling you "booby". You use pejoratives all the time, referring to me and to a friend of mine, Navy. So I ask you too, how old are you? 10?
Well gee, booby, aren't you quite the adult (because I know you have difficulty understanding complex concepts, that was sarcasm). I have to go with NDD here and say that you sound like you are about 10. I guess I've been using words that were too big for you since I've done plenty of posting. Interesting that all you remember is when I mentioned liquor and Rep. Bachmann.
You'll have to do better than that, booby, I do not believe your 1/3 of combat troops as everything I have heard about and read says that 1/3 figure only refers to the Marines. And your reading comprehension isn't so hot either. I will repeat it for you, it does not matter if it is 33% of all troops, some troops or any particular service, discrimination is wrong. Your continuing to argue for it shows the unrepentant nature of your bigotry, booby.
does anyone feel sorry; for, our supposed representatives...???why are we even trying to negotiate?? if the bush tax cuts are renewed,we will never get rid, of them!!! wake up!!!!why must the american; low to middle class, continue to suffer?? there is no reason..none. they fooled you with, trickle down theory and now you are allowing it again.....c'mon obama..it will be worse; so please do not hide under the guise of, its the best we could do?? where is the fire, we used to see??do not knuckle under, we aren't!!!!deny, the bush tax cuts..extend unemployment benefits for the 99ers...revise the estate tax..get rid of, dadt...extend everyone else's unemployment benefits for 13 months and pass, the dream act..we have paid, for the insanely rich, for 234 years..when is it our turn????? how about now?????
You really have to be very good at heart to be a Democrat !!!! Seemingly, it is a God given gift.
Minding about the well being of every individual regardless of whether they are middle class or rich is a difficult task to many people, especially when you as an individual is already rich.
As a rich man, one is likely to fight for his own continued well being just the way rich republican representatives are fighting for their own tax cuts at the expense of the middle class.
Why is it that only these already rich and successful Democrat representatives keep on fighting for tax cuts for the middle class and are ready to have their own taxes go up just to make sure that only the middle class get tax cuts?
Why is it that only these already rich and successful Democrat representatives are always ready to sacrifice their financial circumstances by always agreeing to have their taxes go up for the sake of the middle class?
Why is it that they do not take advantage of their being in Congress to fight for their own tax cuts (tax cut for the already wealthy like them) the way republican representatives do?
Why is it that only Democrat representatives, despite their being wealthy and successful, keep on spending sleepless nights thinking of how the middle class and the low income class can be given tax breaks and not themselves the way republicans do?
Sam
You are way to sanctimonious in your politics for me
Democrats and liberals are no more angels then Republicans and conservatives are devils
There are angels and devils in both groups
The art of politics is to appear an angel to a larger group then the one that thinks you are a devil - that is how elections are won
Do not equate your moral role model to politics
Sam, as Robert in Ohio has demonstrated, conservatives just can not understand how anyone would want to ensure that everyone gets a fair shake, even if it means that they might lose a bit of an advantage.
It is a character flaw. It is the 'us and them', 'they are the enemy', 'I've got mine, screw you' attitude/s that define their outlook on life. It must be really sad to live life thinking 'everyone is out to get them' or 'I must be first even if it means others must suffer', or 'everyone hates me because I'm more successful'.
Remember the kid who not only wouldn't share his toys but tried to hold on to them all so that not one could take them with the result that they couldn't play with them either? That is how I view most of those on the right wing, especially those who support today's Republican/TP Inc. party.
Ah, the smug condescension of the liberals. They are more knowledgable, more caring, more compassionate toward "the poor".
All the while doing all they can to keep them there.
Last week, I was referred to as "Scrooge" by the supposedly intellectually superior on this board. Obviously, they do not read, nor do they study history.
Scrooge was asked to contribute, VOLUNTARILY, to a fund for the poor. His response? I pay TAXES to support programs for the poor.
That, my friends, is a LIBERAL'S attitude.
The workhouses to which he refers were, essentially, the homeless shelters of the time, but there was a requirement that residents work to earn their keep. The Gaols to which he refers were debtor's prisons, completely different from criminal institutions. At "Botany Bay", those who could not, or would not, repay their debts were housed in apartment style dwellings, the assignments reflecting both family size and social status.family members were free to come and go as they pleased, while the head of the family was not- at least, until the debt was resolved.
The main purpose of the system was to remove those who had failed in their moral obligation to repay debts. It's greatest punishment was removal from society, and the attendant shame. That's right- shame. One might resolve a debt, but the shame of having been sent to Botany Bay stayed with that person, and his family, for a generation.
Compare that with the attitudes of today's debtors. They blame the people they owe, rather than themselves for overspending.
But I digress.
Scrooge believed that his taxes were all he needed to contribute to society. He refused to donate voluntarily to charity, until the spirits moved him.
Liberals believe that taxes are the answer to keeping the poor fed, rather than allowing people to choose which charities will get their donations. And, some of your more famous liberals, (Al Gore and Joe Biden come to mind), barely donate to charities at all.
Those are your Scrooges.
One wonders what it would take to move nj into some compassion for others. One of the reasons that taxpayers wound up involved in care for those less fortunate is that people like NJ were not stepping up to do their part. As always, she leaves out the rest of what Scrooge asked the benefactors of the community, and I am paraphrasing here, since I am far too impatient with NJ's apparent disconnect from humanity to get it accurately. Scrooge also asked are if there were still work houses. When he was told that there were, he said then that is where the poor must go.( Seems like Newtie Gingrinch indicated something similar when he wanted to set up orphanages.) He was told that some would rather die than go there. Scrooge's response? Then let them die. Kind of like NJ and the "compassionate conservatives" wouldn't you say?
Nice Job NDD!
The Grinch is more prickly than usual...
She's MEAN one alright! ;0)
Newtie is more forthright about it: GinGRINCH! So accurate.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
I am not going to blow my own horn. Suffice to say, I contribute far more to charity than either Biden or Gore. I am a firm believer in contributing to charity. I do not talk out of both sides of my mouth- on one side, crowing about my compassion, while on the other, keeping my purse closed.
That is how you know I am not a liberal. . .
And there it is a again: NJ's narcissistic world. " I give far more than Biden or Gore." Really NJ? Famous last words. Here is what we know. People like NJ believe that those who do not have what they have are somehow morally deficient. And they want those "lazy folk" to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, which I am certain they would if they had the requisite boot or strap. But, we can forgive poor NJ"s testiness, since her Scrooge analogy did not go well for her. The whole thing with Scrooge is so clear. "If they want to die, let them". Kind of like the Governor in Arizona, right NJ?
And you know this how, NJ? That was an awful loud toot for not wanting to toot your own horn. Frankly though, I do not believe it and think you are lying.
David Brooks: Obama's Very Good Week
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/10/opinion/10brooks.html
Bits & Pieces From Article:
This contrast is not between lefties and moderates. It’s a contrast between different theories of how politics is done. Ted Kennedy was a network liberal, willing to stray from his preferences in negotiation with George W. Bush or John McCain. Most House Democrats, by contrast, are cluster liberals. They come from safe seats, have a poor feel for the wider electorate and work in an institution where politics is a war of all against all.
Cluster liberals in the House and the commentariat are angry. They have no strategy for how Obama could have better played his weak hand — with a coming Republican majority, an expiring tax law and several Democratic senators from red states insisting on extending all the cuts. They just sense the waning of their moment and are howling in protest.
The fact is, Obama and the Democrats have had an excellent week. The White House negotiators did an outstanding job for their side. With little leverage, they got not only the unemployment insurance, but also an Earned Income Tax Credit provision, a college scholarship provision and other Democratic goodies. With little leverage, they got a package that could win grudging praise from big-name liberal groups like the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the Center for American Progress.
Moreover, Obama has put himself in a position to govern again. The package is popular. According to the most recent Gallup numbers, 67 percent of independents and 52 percent of Democrats support extending all the tax cuts. Higher numbers support extending the unemployment insurance. Obama is reminding independents why they liked him in the first place.
The big story of the week is that Obama is returning to first principles, re-establishing himself as a network liberal. This isn’t a move to the center or triangulation. It’s not the Clinton model or the Truman model or any of the other stale categories people are trying to impose on him. It’s standing at one spot in the political universe and trying to build temporarily alliances with people at other spots in the political universe.
You don’t have to abandon your principles to cut a deal. You just have to acknowledge that there are other people in the world and even a president doesn’t get to stamp his foot and have his way.
Washington doesn’t know how to handle coalition-building anymore; you can see consternation and confusion all around. But did anybody think changing the tone was going to be easy?
______________
A comment I found by someone (Robin) who had read DBrook's article, which pretty much sums it all up.
"I don’t think his status as a network or cluster liberal has anything to do with it. He wanted to get several things accomplished such as preserving tax rates for 80% of Americans, increasing the EITC, etc. In order for him to get those things done, he had to have the cooperation of both the house and senate. The Senate Republicans have shown time and again that they can maintain party and defeat things unless you give them a reason to support you. There was no reason for them to give into Obama’s demands unless they got something in return. He had to give it to them. So, where do things stand now. The house democrats can keep the tax compromise tabled until 1/20/2011, but that only ensures more gridlock. The Senate Republicans (including Snowe and Collins) have publicly said that nothing will get a vote in the Senate (including the DADT repeal which Snowe, Collins, Brown, Kirk, and Murkowski plan to vote for) until the tax bill is voted through.
So, no vote on the Dream Act, no vote on DADT Repeal, and no votes on anything else until House democrats quit holding the tqax bil hostage. If they decide it is worth forfeiting votes on all that to keep rich people from getting a tax cut…well Republicans inherit the keys to the House on 1/20/2011 and I am sure they will move the tax bill, or a version of it that includes even more things they like, very quickly, the Senate will pass it too, and maybe throw on a couple of more perks, and the President will have to sign a law that gives more to the Republicans than the current agreement.
So the choice isn’t between giving the Republicans what they want or not. It is (1) giving the Republicans some of what they want right now (2) giving them much more if it passes in 2011 (3) Settling for nothing by voting down their 2011 compromise." end

I was happy to see President Clinton at the press conference. It is important that the good parts of this legislation be out there, since we're getting pretty much all negative, all the time. No one wants to take the time to read what's in it. Just react. Including me.
Obama & Clinton. Working together. Who would have ever thought this would happen in 2008? You build partnerships in government. In life. This is what President Obama gets. Strength is not built on angry words, thumping chests. That's weakness. Strength is talking and listening to people. President Obama is a mature, intelligent dignified man. He brought both Clintons into his Administration. And they came. We have come a long long way since 2008.
Did President Obama fight hard enough is the question. He was advised not to. The Democrats gave him nothing he could pass. He had to reach out to the Republicans in order to get this thing passed. His top priority was extending unemployment insurance. That was what HE wanted. Desperately. And he got it. For 13 months, instead of 6, which is what the GOP wanted to give him.
Howard Fineman. Arianna Huffington. Bill Maher. And a whole host of other so-called journalists and pundits. All negative. All the time. Enough. We deserve the full story. Not just the negative that you all continue to spout night after night after night. If President Obama has to give in to the tax cut extensions, then tell us why. Find out why. Perhaps, just perhaps, there is a good reason why.
There ARE wimps in this country. President Obama is not one of them. He is doing all the hard work. Everyone else is just bitching. 24/7.
Jonathan Alter. Eugene Robinson. Chris Hayes. Ezra Klein. Richard Wolffe. Solid journalists. Fair AND balanced.
Good luck getting the ideologues in Pelosi's Democratic House caucus to agree with you and David Brooks, Pat.
But, I'm afraid I can't go along with your rogue's gallery list of "solid journalists". Especially Jonathan Alter...the rest are merely poor examples of good journalists, but Alter is a shameless, servile, fawning, obsequiously embarrassing Obama sycophant.
While endorsing President Obama's agreement to extend the Bush tax cuts, President Clinton chose to reference Charles Krauthammer:
"Read Charles Krauthammer's column in the Post. He's brilliant.."
I couldn't agree more, Mr. President.
I actually did read Krauthammer's column and about 100 other columns trying to figure out what happened here. And what I learned is that in September, President Obama wanted to vote on the tax cut extensions. Five Senate Democrats (including John Kerry, thank goodness) DEMANDED they vote. But a handful of Democratic Senators and House Members said flat out no. President Obama knew then that he had to move on.
The vote last Saturday in the Senate was all theatre. President Obama was already talking with Mitch McConnell. He knew he would never get the votes he needed. And as we saw, the Senate never went above 53.
I am finding also that many progressives who are screaming bloody murder over this are from red states, have red Senators. Or were former Republicans and are using Rove-like tactics now against President Obama. And as Mr. Brooks stated, some of the Democratic Senators are from red states and you can't get through to them. So this is where the change has to occur for Democrats. But it's not going to happen. We learned a lot up here from the Coakley disaster. A lot of research went into how she lost so they could figure out how they could get Democratic victories in November, against big-named Republicans and money. Coakley simply took it for granted that she would win. We all did. Hence, no real GOTV effort. So that's what was worked on in order to get our Governor re-elected and keep D seats in the House. It worked. It took hard work. But it's the only way you win.
As is said so often, you have to go with the Senate you have. The Democratic Senate, mind you. President Obama realized that before anyone. I haven't seen it anywhere, but I would imagine he's pretty ticked off with his own party. He just would never come out and say it.
As far as Jonathan Alter, I have seen him be critical of President Obama, of Democrats, of progressives. That's why I like him. He has an honesty about him that I find refreshing. Everyone else more or less just repeats the CW heard around the blogsophere. Jonathan doesn't do that. He has a realistic perspective. He doesn't get into the obnoxius emotional uproars. He's pretty analytical.
Of real concern to me now are the stories being reported about the blacks and their deep resentment of the way DEMOCRATS are treating the president. This really hurts. A lot. I talk all the time about what I learned reading about Dred Scott, Plessy & Thurgood Marshall this year. Just this past week, a co-worker brought me a book about Boston and how the city confronted Jim Crow. I admire so much those who stayed in the fight for equality, no matter how long it took. Perseverence, over generation after generation. LBJ finally passes the civil rights legislation. A Democrat. One of the proudest moments in our party. Of all my years reading about our history, 2010 was the year I learned the most.
And now I'm reading about real resentment in the black community. I hope this gets addressed. Now. Not because they may leave the party. But because it's just plain awful that this is happening.
I didn't watch the morning talk shows, so I may not be up-to-date here. But I notice very little screaming from the GOP over this bill. Coalition building is what is needed going forward. It's what Ted Kennedy did. His best friend in the Senate was Orrin Hatch. Can you imagine? I can't. Ted used to tell his Republican friends that when they were running for re-election, they were welcome to use him as a punching bag. And they did, that's for sure. Lol.
My political world has turned upside down. I'm not reading progressive sites that I used to. I'm not watching night time programs that I used to watch religiously. I seem a little lost right now politically. Changing course does that. I guess all I can do is my part in keeping MA Democratic.
Also, I have noticed one thing. Republicans compromised with President Obama. Yet I hear very little screaming from the Republican supporters accusing the R's of being sell outs.
Talk to you tomorrow MB. Going for a walk in the rain before the football games.
And now I'm reading about real resentment in the black community. I hope this gets addressed. Now. Not because they may leave the party. But because it's just plain awful that this is happening.
Not sure if I made this clear. The black community aren't angry with the Democratic Party in DC. They're angry with the so-called "progressives" in the blogsophere. They've been paying attention to all the websites out there and how they're treating President Obama, and they are leaving the sites in droves. It's becoming a segregated internet now. Also, there was a report that Vice President Biden went up to the Hill to talk about this legislation, and Rep. Weiner evidently called President Obama the Negotiater in Chief. Biden shot back, ***dammit, I will NOT talk about the President like that. Makes me want to weep. It really does.
My Democratic Party. Disgraceful. Good for VP Biden.
Hey Feisty - GO PATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol. Should be a good game. Let's hope so anyway. It's pouring cats & dogs here.
Pat Boston MA
My Democratic Party. Disgraceful. Good for VP Biden.
Woowee! It’s just wrong for the progressive left to cop-out at this time it provides deep disillusion for the Democratic Party. It’s also great hope for the GOP/TEA PARTY.
What have they done to advance this whole process? That's right advocate running a democratic nominee against him. Bill Clinton also didn't have to fight against his own party.
Remember the GOP/TEA PARTY keeps “NOPE” alive. The Republican Tea Party say “Big Government” is evil. In fact, the Republican Tea Party is just as evil. It’s not government, aggressively destroying our environment or wastefully exhausting our resources, it’s the too big too fail big businesses. I don’t see that as the lesser of two evils or ok. The Tea Party's war is on the working poor and middle class public education continues as the progressive left continues its crusade bashing the President.
His move was a larger step against an evil we do know will occur from the GOP/TEA PARTY.
President Obama is not the first President to not accomplish as much as for Blacks, minorities and other Americans; neither is he not the first to try. That is and will be our present plight as Americans on our last dance out the door; if this willingness to draft a new democratic nominee for 2012.
It's akin to Ralph Nadar always splitting the vote.
Great day on newsvine.
Listening to two drunk, old, fat women bitch about everyone else's sex lives since it's a given these two don't have any.

Hi Feisty, I know the feeling. We had one of these games against the Cleveland Browns and I thought we were cooked. Chicago is in good shape I think for the playoffs. And who knows. We may meet again before the season ends. I just hope the Jets lose today.
I'm off line for the rest of the day. See you tomorrow or Tues.
