Poll: JFK tops presidential approval poll, Carter slips 9 points

John F. Kennedy remains the most popular modern U.S. president, according to a new Gallup poll of the nine most recent presidents, while Jimmy Carter’s approval rating has dropped 9 percentage points since 2006.

Since Gallup began its retrospective job approval poll in 1990, Kennedy has consistently topped the list of most popular presidents, while Richard Nixon has received the lowest approval rating in every poll except the one conducted in 1993. Lyndon Johnson, who now has a 47 percent rating, was ranked last that year.

Kennedy got a thumbs up from 85 percent of respondents.

Carter has a 52 percent rating this year, down from 61 when the last poll was conducted in 2006. That puts him sixth on the list (above Johnson, George W. Bush and Nixon). Carter’s approval reached its peak in 1999, according to Gallup, but has consistently dropped since then due to a loss in support from Republicans and independents in recent years.

“These changes may reflect Carter’s outspoken criticism of then-President George W. Bush over the Iraq war, at one time calling Bush’s presidency ‘the worst in history’ on international matters,” Gallup said in a press release. “Whatever the reason for the decline, Carter remains better regarded today, overall, than he was in the early ’90s.”

New to the list this year: George W. Bush who ranks eighth with 47 percent approval – up 13 points from when he left office in 2009. (It’s also one percent higher than President Barack Obama’s current rating, as POLITICO points out.)

After staying out of the spotlight, Bush has hit the road in recent weeks to promote his new book, “Decision Points,” which was released Nov. 9 – one possible explanation for the bonhomie respondents of the latest Gallup poll seem to be sending his way.

Gallup also noted that Johnson, Nixon and Clinton have maintained job approval ratings that approximate how they were viewed at the end of their terms.

The poll was conducted between Nov. 19-21 on a sample of 1,037 adults using landline telephones and cellular phones.

You can find the complete results of the poll here.

George W. Bush who ranks eighth with 47 percent approval

Am I understanding this? 'W' is ranked 8th out of the nine most recent President and this is something you're bragging about Bob?

Only in tea bagger land is coming in second to last something to be celebrated! lmao!

Oh... and about President Obama's approval ratings... they're STILL higher than both Reagan & Clinton at this time in their Presidency's...

So what you're point again...?

Feisty, I want a recount! I don't know why Bush is ranked above Nixon. Nixon, for all his faults did finally get us out of Viet Nam, he opened negotiations with China, negotiated an arms control treaty with the Soviet Union and negotiated a separation of forces agreement between Israel and the Arabs. Unlike W, it could well be argued that Nixon left office with the world being less dangerous than when he took office.

Bragging? I certainly don't care about Bush. Heck, Bush doesn't even care.

It is funny however, that with the gnashing of the teeth hatred for Bush we get here from the Obama disciples day after day after day, that ...........

    Obama ranks lower than Bush

    Yea Feisty - lmao!

"Oh.... and about President Obama's approval ratings..."

They are still lower than BUSH!

I'm sorry, but that is funny.

Anyway, about the "Reagan & Clinton" liberal pacifier, Reagan had a clue what he was doing and turned it around. Obama doesn't and won't. Clinton had a clue and gave up the liberal agenda. Obama doesn't and won't.

What should be really scary for you guys is that people, for some reason, still seem to like Obama personally, they just don't like his agenda, what he has done, the direction he wants to go. They seem to be saying He's a nice guy, he's just out of his depth.

9.8% unemployment and Obama doesn't even talk about it going down. Wait untill they turn on him. Afghanistan and Obama kicks the can to 2014. On and on. Health care? What happens as more and more comes out (All the companies having to apply for waivers to keep from laying off employees, or dropping their existing coverage?) Wait until the media and the rest more Dems turn on him.

    This part is not funny......

,but Bush ranks higher than Obama - that is "lmao" funny.

    feisty,

you can't just "say something" and that makes it true, like you always unsuccessfully attempt!

obama's current rating IS lower than Reagan's or GW's! AND, your prophet obama will NEVER reach 90% such as GW did, GET OVER IT!

quite simply, obama showed an unprecedented PLUMMET that only MASS FAILURE could accomplish!

also easily over-looked is this comparison/link to the worse and the soon-to-be worse POTUS ever that is in fine print on such said poll that the obama-sheep, "fiesty" is putting her hand in on:

the feeling of weakness right now among Americans is so profound that I think it leaves them searching for Obama/Carter comparisons. Which is also why Carter’s ratings are down so sharply, I think. Suddenly people are remembering the malaise. Vividly

Funny, this ranking looks strikingly similar to the poll results at a gay eco convention. Carter is the worst president in the last 80 years. Johnson was a megalomainiac and one of the biggest hypocrites in the history of the federal government. Reagan and Clinton should actually be tops on this list.

One unhindered criminal investigation into 9/11 and Bush/Cheney go down in history as the worst humans to ever occupy American reality let alone the Whitehouse.

that would be YOUR LAME opinion as a progressive! But by NO MEANS, any form of something that escapes YOU; REALITY!!!

afterall, GW's great handling and leadership of the 9/11 crisis, DID lead to a 90+% approval rating!!! BUT how soon revisionist like YOU forget, huh?

90% of Americans are sheeple. They never question what they are told. They are brainwashed into thinking that "my country right or wrong" is a patriotic declaration when reality says it is not.

david: There is nothing revisionist about Cheney planning and executing 9/11. Only the willfully ignorant would oppose exposition of that fact. As an example of the brainwash, I can write a completely true, factual statement about 9/11 and you will be unable to comprehend it. Observe your own reaction:

To this date, there is NO PROOF that MUSLIMS were flying the planes on 9/11, none.

Really Paul? You believe that? You been watching Tru TV with Jesse? I have to ask you, do you watch/listen to Alex Jones?

On a side note, why is this even news?? Isn't there more important things happening or is just a deflection from what seems to be a bad week for Liberals?

And sheeple Number 1 Florida has demonstrated the attempt to kill the messenger technique.

          Jesse is playing catch-up.

Deal with the message, not the messenger.

There is NO PROOF that MUSLIMS were flying the planes on 9/11. None has been provided to you, but you believe that it has. They are playing you for fools, and it's working.

Kennedy is a myth, perpetrated and nurtured by the liberal media,(He was actually in a great deal of trouble politically and was in danger of losing the next election when he was assassinated), and when more facts are known about him and the rest of these gentlemen,(which will eventually come out),the "ratings" will change quite a bit. I would be much more interested in seeing how these Presidents are rated by Historians, (not politicians or pseudo-historian ringers thrown in for padding, TRUE Historians).

What facts do you know about Kennedy that the rest of us don't which gives you historical insight?

I don't have any information that You don't have Paul, what I do have are questions about that information on things that just don't make sense or seem to have been ignored such as; How does a Japanese destroyer overtake, outmaneuver and ram a much faster and more maneuverable craft in open seas, on calm waters, under clear skies and how is that incident not investigated by the military but a book is written and a hero manufactured and thrown into national prominence without such an investigation ?It would be interesting if that Japanese destroyer could be found and the ships logs read and surviving members of the crew interviewed to get their side of the story, or why Mayor Daily said he delivered the election to Kennedy in a race where Nixon actually won the popular vote, but in Chicago more votes were cast than voters, which allowed Kennedy to win Illinois and the electoral College,Why did Daily say that, and how did such irregularities happen and not be investigated ?Then we get into mob and union ties and Kennedy's well known womanizing, the most famous of which involving Marilyn Monroe, who was also involved with Sam Giancanno, a mafia chieftan, and the mysterious circumstances of her untimely death, How and why did Kennedy seem to have so many trysts with Mafia molls or KGB agents? Why was Bobby going so hard after certain mafia figures before his untimely death and just what did J Edgar Hoover have on Kennedy?, then we get into foreign policy , was the Bay of Pigs an effort to free Cuba or an attempt to get rid of Castro so the Mafia could get their playground and casino's back as payback for the Chicago vote, not to mention the starting of our involvement in Southeast Asia, the Diem Assassination, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Berlin Wall, Why were the communist so bold?, what did they know and how? There is also the mysteries involving the JFK assassination itself,(3 shots from a very inaccurate Italian bolt action rifle with a loose scope on a moving target by a lone gunman who just happened to keep a diary saying he was guilty, ....really?but Oswald, the "presumed" assassin, was murdered before he was given a trial, case closed, but... there is still Oswald and Ruby's mob connections, that involvement taken to their graves and never pursued, why ?),That's some of the information we know, we just don't know the why, which will take the above mentioned historians going beyond the smoke and mirrors of "Camelot" to find the answers, whatever they may be.

Revisionist? How long did that 90% last and what did he leave office with? Geez, you act like Bush had a 90% during both terms and left with. When it is all said and done, Obama will end up with better nembers than Bush, hands down.

How can Ronald Reagan rank second? what did he ever do for the country to be so popular? and why isn't Obama on the list, after all he has accomplished in the past two years?

Agreed (on the Reagan bit)! Does no one remember that Reagan and GHW Bush were both "leaders" during the Iran Contra fiasco? Playing dumb and/or pretending to have no control over your administration is no excuse. This was a treasonous affair and both of them should have been punished. Of course, Reagan's education cuts probably helped his popularity - dumbing down America worked like a charm for him.

Why isn't Franklin Roosevelt on the list? I guess that a President has to do more than just lead the country through a Depression and a World War to be considered popular these days.

Remember ranks cannot make a person.

I asked that people tweet a twitter message out for anyone in need for things that they must need to survive. Now I ask for a donation in honor of what you do have to give to 5 people. Your donation will allow three kids, boy age 5, girl age 3 and girl age1 to received toys and clothes for Christmas. Your donations will also stop two adults a daughter and a mother that lives in two different houses from going into foreclosure. They cannot make their mortgage payments. A letter was written from Habitat that stated, failure to make your payments is a serious issue and will result in your account being sent to foreclosure. Foreclosure would result in you losing your home and having to move out. Please remember that once your account goes into foreclosure, you will be responsible for the remaining balance of the loan, late fees, default interest, as well as any incurred expenses including attorney’s fees, end of letter quote. They have no, where else to go. Please help save their homes by sending donations for Ms Kidd and Ms James to Habitat for Humanity P.O. Box 16422 Mobile, Alabama 36616 (251) 4767171 and please send all clothes and toys to 1523 Airview Drive Mobile, Alabama 36605. Don’t let them loose the only places that they can call home. They need immediately help. Their house notes should have been paid once again on or before December 10, 2010 and has not been. As of December 13, 2010 they will be receiving another letter from Habitat. So please help them. Please help spread the word through other means, blogging, Facebook etc. Thank you
