White House pushes again for DREAM act

From NBC's Athena Jones
Another day, another White House conference call pushing one of their agenda items.

For the second time in two days, White House officials took to the telephone this morning urging Congress to pass the Dream Act. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, Cecilia Munoz, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House, President of Regent University Dr. Carlos Campo, UCLA Chancellor Dr. Gene Block, and the President of Miami-Dade College Dr. Eduardo Padron hosted a call Friday in which they argued that passing the bill was important to America's ability to compete in today's global economy.

Locke called the legislation -- which would allow young people who were not responsible for immigrating illegally to this country and who want to go to college or join the military to adjust their immigration status and provide a path to citizenship without fear of deportation -- "critical" to the country's future and said that each year promising high school students are prevented from attending doing so due to their illegal status.

"These are kids that can be our future scientists, our doctors, our military leaders and our educators," Locke said. "Some of them are our future entrepreneurs who will build the next Google or Intel that will generate hundreds of thousands of good paying jobs for our country."

Locke said that over the past 15 years, 25% of venture capital backed companies that eventually went public were started by immigrants.

The Dream Act faces difficult odds in the few weeks before Congress breaks for the holidays, as Democrats and Republicans try to strike deals on pressing issues from funding the government, to ratifying the New START arms treaty with Russia to extending the Bush tax cuts.

"I think some of this discussion about the Dream Act has been so short-sighted and we're failing to see the long-term benefits to our economy," Padron said.

The officials said the Dream Act would would not be a 'giveaway' by any means due to the lengthy process and vigorous background check the legislation would require and to its economic benefits. Munoz said the White House would remain "absolutely engaged" in efforts to get the bill passed and cited a Congressional Budget Office study saying the legislation would generate $2.3 billion of revenue over 10 years and reduce the deficit over the same period.

Thursday, DHS Sec. Janet Napolitano argued passage of the bill would strengthen the U.S. economy and its military and allow the Department of Homeland Security to focus its enforcement resources on removing dangerous criminal aliens from the country.

DHS Sec. Janet Napolitano argued passage of the bill would strengthen the U.S. economy and its military and allow the Department of Homeland Security to focus its enforcement resources on removing dangerous criminal aliens from the country.

But, the bigoted GOP WOULD RATHER spend thousands upon thousands of tax dollars to deport future contributors to this country.

this interpretation is—how to say it? hypocitcal

This is not an emergency. How is this fixing the economy? This can wait until next year. Get unemployment extended first, pass the tax cuts however the deal ends up. Illegals won't starve or loose their homes because the DREAM act didn't get passed.

Its amazing the democrats had two years to pass this, yet wouldn't and now amazingly its an emergency that it be passed. Don't harp on republicans they weren't in the majority in either house. Its the dems that didn't act.

What you wrote above is absolutely NOT true, Janet! Democrats tried multiple times this year to pass the DREAM ACT, however, they all got filibustered by Republicans!

The very senators who co-sponsored the DREAM ACT, now saying they would not vote for it. Think about it.

They co-sponsored the bill, but they would not vote for it! What a hypocrisy!

Let's harp on republicans for their hypocrisy and obstruction! And Janet, please do a basic research before you babble anything that comes on your mind!

“argued that passing the bill was important to America's ability to compete in today's global economy.”

How, as we have unemployment at 9.8%, so granting illegals that shouldn’t be here anyways to compete for the few jobs available will help us compete in a global economy? Do not listen to these lies as many are without jobs already in this country as they blame companies for outsourcing jobs. Now they want to insource that cheap labor but make them legal when we already have too many H1B visas.

“said that each year promising high school students are prevented from attending doing so due to their illegal status”

What, does Locke know that no child is denied an education as every illegal does? Most not know about the Supreme Court ruling.

This is all BS about the Dream Act and anyone that can read it should call it for what it is, another thing taken away for the American people.

The Dream Act will give citizenship to illegals if they completed at least 2 years, in good standing, in a program for a bachelor's degree or higher degree in the United States," or have "served in the uniformed services for at least 2 years. 2 years, really?? That doesn’t show that someone really wants to be a US citizen, I can enroll in any BS college and then drop out afterwards. Do I even have to show up to class, sounds like for profit colleges want this and if so I’m investing in University of Phoenix. Also serving 2 years in the military, another joke.

Ability for us to compete, ha and preventing kids from attending school another ha.

Nothing gets "passed" for the next two years unless it proudly displays the Republican Seal of Approval. Without the Republican endorsement, the bills will just be a waste of paper.

Whats really funny, is that the Dems STILL don't get it. They lost everything. They are all a bunch of non-entitys. They might as well be on the planet Mars for all the good they will now do. Bunch of useless eaters.

Fancy you to chime. You call me a racist in this thread. Plu-ezzze, what I've said is exactly right about the GOP/TEA BAGGERS. They have a hegemony on bigotry. Just look at the hegemony Jan Brewer's Arizona's anti-immigration law.

I suppose your special needs ascribe to benefits that only embrace holding this country back by a bunch of greedy corporatists sitting on 1.6 trillion who didn't produce "then and now". It's been ten years!!!

Making those individuals legitimate will contribute the prosperity of America. A much as you people complain about illegitimacy you don't factor in to account illegal contribute to the tax base. Undocumented immigrants pay payroll taxes. They also pay sales taxes on items such as food, clothing, etc.

Americans believe that undocumented immigrants are exploiting the United States' economy. The widespread belief is that illegal aliens cost more in government services than they contribute to the economy. This belief is undeniably false.

The figures in this article are as bogus as the idea that giving more illegals amnesty will benefit America. It has been done to us before and there is no evidence of it benefiting anyone but illegals, Mexico and wormy politicians. Throw every last one of them out of the country. This is America however. They are free to take their children with them.

The reason Bush/Cheney wanted "a path to citizenship" was to increase our working population and related contributions to tax revenue (volume to compensate for the tax cuts for dividends, capitals gains from the wealthy) and Social Security, and the social conservative agenda (most specifically Latina Catholics). Not to mention Bush was re-elected by a margin per Hispanic votes.

Okay, moving on, we now have an even larger problem of tax revenue and entitlement programs. We are back to forms of amnesty instead of fixing these problems in a real way, like removing tax write-offs (gaming the system), or caps (e.g., paying into FICA on $106,000 only), or ending negotiations of pennies to the dollar with the IRS, or allowing minors to collect Social Security or not moving disability to a health care program, and on and on.

Claiming we would have more doctors is silliness, as well as our voluntary army, which has plenty of volunteers. The long-term problem of illegals and naturalization regardless of parent's legal status is if this is rewarded in any way, it's similar to negotiating with terrorists -- It will just cause the flood over the border to skyrocket. This in turn results in unfairness to those trying to immigrate legally, and from other parts of the world. This in turn results in lack of assimilation (speaking English, etc.) and loyalty to the United States.

Anyone who suggests circumvention to the Rule of Law by making laws in exception, is still circumventing the Rule of Law. Sorry President Obama, but I don't agree with the DREAM Act. And I think we need to focus on the people who are here legally first.

We should just deport Bev. All she does is whine and moan about the GOP. I wonder how much she gets paid to do that?

As for those brought here by their parents, they should all be required to spend 4 years in the military to become citizens, if they want to stay. Then give them the GI bill for college like the rest who earned it, along with citizenship. Their parents should be deported making more jobs for those who are here legally. That would be fair.

Of course Bev will whine about that to because that is what she does. She wants everything her way. It doesn't matter to her what is fair for the rest of the country as long as she can keep throwing her tantrums.

I guess we can choose what laws we want to enforce? Homeland Impurity has done nothing to enforce the current immigration laws, causing Arizona to pass a law to enforce the current laws, causing certain brainless idiots to boycott and bring a lawsuit against Arizona for trying to enforce etc. etc.

Does anyone else see how f****d up this is? Illegal ALIENS (I don't give a damn if it's PC or not) are, by definition, breaking the law, and are therefore criminals, meaning any gov't official who doesn't enforce the laws is breaking the law and should be indicted or impeached. Of either party.

Oh, yeah, and California, long known as a haven for illegal aliens is going belly up, at least in part because they allow illegals access to public assistance. And they come groveling to Washington looking for a handout to fill their 25 BILLION deficit, never mind the Federal deficit is over 14 TRILLION.

I look in despair at a wonderful country, filled with promise, going down the tubes because POLITICIANS HAVE NO BALLS.

Yea, on the day the numbers for unemployment go up to 9.8%, the White House pushes for another social agenda program to appease the Hispanic voters while pushing the DADT social agenda program to appease that voter block.

Isn't this the same pattern, social agenda programs instead of jobs, of the last two years.

Wonder why unemployment has been at 9.6% for over a year (for what 17 months?) and now jumps to 9.8%?

And I can't believe that Unions roll over and play dead for this fool. They are the ones who will be most affected by an amnesty program that will ultimately make them lose more jobs. Another twist that I never reflected on that you mentioned...The fact that law enforcement oficials who ignore immigration laws are breaking the law themselves. Time to get tough all the way down the line. From the border to the employer.

Why does congress continue to cater to illegals and grant them more benefits than US citizens? Hypocrits! For example, here in California they just ruled that illegals must receive in state tuition while out of state USA citizens from the other 49 states must pay out of state tuition. You talk about an illegal subsidy of illegal immigrants because that's exactly what it is.

Is this really fair to give priority to foreigners when so many low income Americans merit to receive higher education? Which other country in the world favor foreigners above its own citizens? This is something absolutely wrong and unfair in this premise.

Let me make this as simple as I can so everyone can follow the logic.

Imagine America is our little boat at sea. The boat has a hole in it's hull (THE BORDER), and water (ILLEGAL ALIENS) is pouring in, and we are in danger of sinking (GOING BROKE).

What do we do??? First we patch up the hole in the hull. (SEAL THE BORDER). Then, we bail out all the unwanted water. (DEPORT THE ILLEGAL ALIENS). It doesn't do a lot of good to bail out the water first, as it just keeps coming right back in.

This is the real solution to Illegal immigration and our own government keeps fighting against the will of the true Americans. No wonder they took such a shellacking last month and will again in 2012.

The Migration Policy Institute estimates that 2.1 million illegal aliens could be immediately eligible for legalization should the DREAM Act pass into law.

Not one of these bills has been reviewed by the Judiciary Committee, nor have Senators been provided with a (CBO) Congressional Budget Office score. Senator Jeff Sessions has stated this is a cunning game that makes it not viable for members of this body, and their constituents, to properly evaluate and consider the legislation prior to a vote. It is an abuse of the process and on that basis alone members ought to oppose cloture. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) also contacted the Congressional Budget Office today regarding (CBO) score of either the House version of the DREAM Act (H.R.1751) or the most recent Senate version (S.3992). Sen. Vitter's request is similar to one made last night by Ranking Member of the House Immigration Subcommittee Steve King (R-Iowa) says just the DREAM Act could cost as much as $20 billion dollars.

On Dec. 2, 2010 Sen. Jeff Sessions addressed a letter to his Senate colleagues urging them to oppose the DREAM Act.
Sen. Sessions also discussed the weaknesses of the DREAM Act by highlighting:

            • the ability for individuals who qualify for the DREAM Act to sponsor their family members for (LPR) Lawful Permanent Resident or Legal Permanent Resident status once they (students) themselves have received LPR status; Years of chain migration has become a costly experiment for US taxpayers, as afterwards the sponsors have neglected their financial responsibilities and their charges have had to rely on support of welfare programs.

            • individuals with criminal histories can qualify for the DREAM Act amnesty, and the Secretary of Homeland Security has the authority to waive eligibility requirements;

            • DREAM Act applicants receive an immediate stay of removal proceedings, creating a safe harbor for illegal aliens facing deportation; and

            • DREAM Act applicants don't need to complete college or fulfill their military service in order to receive LPR status.

So here is the full text of the Dream Act (S. 3827: Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2010:

A full mass Amnesty as according to the Heritage Foundation, is estimated at 2.6 Trillion dollars. Mexicans view us as nothing more than cash registers with feet. All our streets are paved with gold. This appears to be another desperate attempt by the Democrats to increase their government-dependent voting block. This is Harry Reid's last gasp. Once the newly elected Republicans take their seats, he will become a non-entity in Washington and in Nevada. This is his handywork and he wants to go out with a bang.

People who are here illegally ought not be granted the same rights and priviledges given to our citizens. How difficult is that to understand? Where do you draw the line if you start this crap? This DREAM Act makes no sense and it's one more reason why Obama is one and done.

When I was growing up we were financially poor. I was told that I would never be able to go to college because my parents couldn't afford it. I wanted so much to be in the medical field. It was not until I was in my mid 40's that I found out I could have gone to school when I was younger by taking student loans. Oh well that's in the past, I've raised my children and put myself through school; however, No one came knocking on our door telling us that we had a free ride into the education of our choice. I; as a taxpayer, will only pay for the higher education of my children.

We should not be forced to pay for higher education for illegal aliens children, and would someone please tell me why it is that America has the easiest alien laws in the world. Mexico would throw an illegal in jail and keep them there until moss grew between their toes before they even went to court. These folks need to be placed back across the boarder.

This issue seems to be a top priority for the Obama Adminstration and a large amount of Congressional Lawmakers. The current and longterm impact from allowing the Dream Act to pass and the yet still unsecured border along with any future Amnesty legislation will cause more a change in American society and economics to the likes of which Americans could never imagine. This is not the we need to help these poor people scenario that our Government and the pro-illegal advocates are projecting. The real impact from illegal aliens and their illegal and legally born children increasing by the thousands is a real and very serious situation. The usual excuse of they (Illegal Aliens) are benefiting our country is a huge fallacy being used to gain control to continue the invasion without anything and anyone getting in their way. Look at the situation now and ponder the future. The recent news on demographics suggesting latinos will be the majority soon will be because of what reason. It will be because our lawmakers are pushing for legislation to allow this to happen. It will be because Federal laws we had in place are being allowed to be broken. It will be because the Federal Government is continuing to allow the border to be a open door for anyone on the globe to step into a society where they can operate in total freedom to rape a country and its citizens. It will be because corrupt pro-illegal advocate groups are being allowed to run our Nations Government so they can continue the invasion of these illegal foreigners takeover. This is only the beginning of the impact of this problem. The end result will be worse than you ever imagined. Yes all those that want to call this bigotry, racism, or fearmongering either have no common sense or have their own reason's for wanting to let this happen. Do we not have the right and responsibilty to protect ourselves, our family's and our country from harm. Well harm is happening right now and its not over yet!

You said a key word in your comment! "Forced". That is what our Federal Government is telling Americans. You have to do what we tell you. They want to make us think we will be thrown into a prison cell and everything we own will be taken from us if we don't comply and obey. This is manupulation of our freedom at its finest!

The clock is running out on the lame duck session. The congress will be much more conservative for at least the next two years, so this Dream Act/ Harry Reid crap will not get anywhere. We did a great job on November 2nd, but must never let our guard down. Once Obama and his cronies are pitched out on their ears, we can start to really rebuild this country to some semblance of it's former greatness.

Unless you are a total idiot, completely uneducated, or simply have NO ambition to do anything other than manual labor the chances of an illegal immigrant taking YOUR job is pretty close to ZERO

With that said we come to the next solution, Getting rid of the jobs illegals DO get. Why is it that Republicans block every single attempt to fine the employers of illegals for hiring them, This one simple move would end the reason they come here and save us billions chasing ghost around in the desert at night only to chase them again next week.

                Not quite BO,

I live in southern Nevada and when construction was going gangbusters, who did I see at ALL the costruction sites??? Mexicans. Now some of them may well be legal citizens, but I believe that most were here illegally. They are not totally stupid, and they definitely are not lazy. they can learn enough about a given craft so that, with constant skilled supervision, they can and will take all the construction jobs. Roofing, painting, framing, drywall, flooring, concrete, excavating, landscape. You name it, they can do it. They don't just pick fruit anymore.

Go back to your country of origin. Then apply for entry and come back legally. With your background you may have a better chance to come here legally.

If you stay here you will always be an illegal and deserving of jail time and deportation. Do the right thing and make your residence here legal.

NO AMNESTY, no amnesty in any form. Not the amnesty in the dream act, no amnesty at all.

No anchor babies. The dream act is like a long term anchor baby amnesty.

All all ALL illegal aliens belong in jail and/or shipped back to their origins at that countries expense. Stop ALL aid to central and south American countries that do not control their citizens and do not stop them from illegally breaking our laws by coming here. NO more foreign aid, especially to Mexico until they control their side of the border. We need military troops along our border. Millions have illegally crossed the border, that amounts to an INVASION.

Shipping all illegals back to their origins will never happen. That is just whacked. How much money is there in the already strained budget to find, investigate, incarcerate and deport all illegal immigrants? Sure, have it your way; that will leave us all broke.

FYI: The Dream Act is not about or like anchor babies or the 14th amendment. These children were not born here.

Beverly, I think you have been misinformed. Illegals are paying payroll taxes with "purchased" (i.e. stolen) social security numbers, so, technically, they are NOT paying taxes, except for the taxes on the goods and services they purchase with welfare money.

If they weren't born here and come here illegally, either by their parents when they were children, or by their own free will, they are still illegal and illegal equals criminal act.

"Obama White House pushes again for DREAM act"

                        Rather strange, isn't it....

1.) We regularly have some sort of life-threatening terrorist crisis occurring nearly on a daily basis....

2.) An earth-shattering financial crisis is on the verge of melt-down on both a personal and national level...

3.) Honest Americans search endlessly each day to find gainful employment to try to provide for their families... as the unemployed rate continues to climb to a staggering 9.8% (factually, a very conservative estimate)... especially after we were all told by our President that we had to accept his urgent need to demand more "stimulous" money from us... or otherwise, he wouldn't be able to keep the unemployment from rising above 8%.....and once again, many fell for this propaganda, also....

Meanwhile.... Our borders are constantly being over-run by illegals as our government intentionally turns their back and now, demands that these illegals be given equal American rights and priviledges which are to be entirely paid for by honest, hard-working Americans.... disguising the real reason for this political deceit which, as everyone knows.... is to buy future votes to retain political power in the upcoming elections...(as the liberal news media volunteers as "salesman" in their relentless propaganda obcession to convince America to freely accept these illegals.)

What is quite apparent....The news media and our national government have intentionally created this hatred and division in our beloved country.... and ensure that it continues, each and every day.

So now.... considering ALL the serious, life-altering, life-threatening, problems and crisis that need to be addressed and corrected RIGHT NOW !..... what issue does MSNBC, and Obama demand be placed toward the top of the"VOTE-ON-THIS-NOW" list ???

....voting on allowing amnesty and American citizenship.....SOLELY to deceitfully gain future votes....

Great post America-the Boss of Politicians,

When Arizona became so desperate that they tried to do what the federal government is paid and sworn to do. The Federal government should have appologized to Arizona for being so lax in their duties. They should have been embarrassed by being exposed for not doing their job. INSTEAD, THEY FIGHT ARIZONA IN COURT. This really brings a microscope to the total contempt this administration has for the will of the people. Now people see what they have really elected, and they don't like it one bit.

I am a first generation American, born to LEGAL immigrants from El Salvador and I am a strong supporter of LEGAL immigratioin.  I truly feel badly for anyone who was brought to this country illegally as children. But Americans cannot and should not have to pay for the illegal actions of the parents who brought them here.  If the DREAM act passes, millions of illegal aliens will attend public colleges which are subsidized with American tax dollars. These people will displace some legal American students. And I believe that passage of this act will encourage another wave of illegal immigrants in hopes of gaining residency through this act or future similar acts. The DREAM act is amnesty and amnesty of any kind will be detrimental to America.

Harry Reid hid a little known poison pill in Obamacare which will cost us whatever is left of our economic solvency.

By setting aside the Public-Charge doctrine and allowing newly legalized aliens to become eligible for ObamaCare immediately, (And the Democrats planned push for their mis-named “Dream Act” will create 800,000 new ObamaCare (and therefore Democratic and Obamacare) constituents, dependent upon Uncle Sam for free health care.

This hidden time bomb in the ObamaCare law was buried deeply and with deliberation. But when it explodes, the American taxpayer will feel the blast.: Adding what will probably end up as 2 million (the Democrats have 5 different versions of the Bill in an effort to muddy the water) largely low-income people to those covered by the health "reform" will further explode the cost of an already unaffordable measure.

(Obama and his Democratic allies are attempting to sell amnesty to the public with claims that it costs little and has nothing to do with health care. Both claims are false.)

Obama/Reid/Pelosi and many other Democrats don't deserve to be voted out of office. They deserve to be put in jail for the rape and pillage of the United States of America.
