Brown to support 'Don't Ask' repeal

From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell and Carrie Dann
Sen. Scott Brown, a Republican from Massachusetts, just announced in a statement that he will support repeal of the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.

Brown says that he "accept[s] the findings of the report" issued by the Pentagon, which found that a majority of servicemembers believe that repeal would have a minimal effect on their units' abilities to serve.

“I pledged to keep an open mind about the present policy on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Having reviewed the Pentagon report, having spoken to active and retired military service members, and having discussed the matter privately with Defense Secretary Gates and others, I accept the findings of the report and support repeal based on the Secretary’s recommendations that repeal will be implemented only when the battle effectiveness of the forces is assured and proper preparations have been completed.”

Brown, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, noted in today's hearing on repeal that he hopes that the service chiefs of each military branch, who have expressed some reservations about repeal, are consulted before the Pentagon officially signs off on any legislation passed by Congress that affects the rule.

He also said earlier today that a repeal by the courts rather than by legislative action would be "exceedingly disruptive" to the force, an argument made by the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff yesterday.

Now, if only our two Maine Senators, alleged moderates, would acknowledge the wishes of the people in their State and come out in support of repeal, we might see repeal before Christmas.

But if the 111th Congress adjourns without repealing DADT, the t-bagging Ayatollahs will delay repeal for years, leaving it to "activist courts" to do what Congress has thus far refused to do.

Our country has to start totally accepting gays and lesbians.  Anybody that speaks to the contrary will lose their job and eventually go to jail.  Isn't that the objective?

Brown's Earmark: No pastels uniforms until labor day will be the earmark.

This is unbelievable - my hat's off to you Senator Scott Brown. I agree with your stands so far; in fact if I didn't know better - the way you are voting reads more in step with an Independent.

Now were are the jobs, the unemployment benefits and public option for the health care bill?

Fortunately the house will be under conservative control, after Jan of next year.

Brown will not be able to do any more harm, before we remove him from office.

If you - I guess tea baggers, Repubs, whatever don't accomplish anything the dems will be back in, so far the republicans talk the talk - but can they walk the walk?

Some respect for Scott Brown. I'm a Liberal and was completely turned off by his bellicosity during the campaign and his playing up to the Tea party. But this guy has actually performed reasonably. I think he deserves some credit for acting in defiance of Turtle McConnell's stop-everything letter. If only more R's behaved with a little more moderation, think of what might b, or could have been, accomplished.

Senator Brown once again reveals himself to be a rather savvy politican who will probably be around for quite a while.

The only way a Republican can hope to have a long career representing the state of Massachusetts is to not be your typical lock-step, never bucking the party line Republican.

If he slavishly followed every Republican talking point to a T (or more accurately, a "Tea") you can be rest assured that he would lose his seat to a Democratic challenger more competent and charismatic than the one he faced in the special election.

He won't even make it through the primaries.

We may lose the seat, but, when we are done, we will have conservative legislators.

He basically said: LOOK AT ME I SUPPORT THIS! But supporting it and making it happen is another thing altogether. Then he immediately provided an alibi for it not moving forward quickly, if at all, when he said:

"I accept the findings of the report and support repeal based on the Secretary’s recommendations that repeal will be implemented only when the battle effectiveness of the forces is assured and proper preparations have been completed.” Who know when that will be?

Brown also said "he hopes that the service chiefs of each military branch, who have expressed some reservations about repeal, are consulted before the Pentagon officially signs off on any legislation passed by Congress that affects the rule. " Basically he wants credit for something that he will do nothing to accelerate. We will have this sorry discriminatory policy for a while to come regardless of his 'support'.

It always does our country good when a Senator, regardless of party, comes forth and says - DADT is not good policy. And kudos to all those here who agree with him, regardless of party.

I don't care why a Senator would vote to repeal this. I'm just awfully glad he/she supports the repeal.

Congratulations to those who fought so hard for this. The hearings have been quite something these last few days. Makes me proud to hear these legislators speak about how wrong this policy is.

As Senator Brown said yesterday - of all the times I have visited with veterans, especially those who were injured- never once did it occur to me to ask if she/he were gay or straight.

As it should be. Hopefully this is the end. Progress. Never underestimate it.

Why in the H is congress debating DADT instead of stopping the tax hike and cutting government spending? The tax payers spoke loud and clear last month and they weren't talking about DADT. This is the insanity that comes with the liberals in power. Forget what most Americans are interested in and go off on some debate which 90% (or more) of the people could care less about. DADT is not earth shattering but the tax hike and the deficit are.

Not hard to figure out why the libbies got their fannies handed to them on the 2nd, is it?

Let them go along doing their thing, with their help, there may not be a dem left in government after 2012.

If the repubs don't accomplish anything - they may have their butts handed to them in 2012, It may be a mix of politicians that can make tough decisions and put us back in drive as a country.

Over 65, I agree with you. DADT can wait until next session of congress just like the "Dream Act", and other non-emergencies that are only being debated for political reasons and have no bearing on the creation of jobs, or the economy. There are only two important things that need to get done before the end of this year and that is the Bush tax cuts and the continuing resolution to keep the government running. The congress has had 10 yrs to settle the tax issue (both republican and democratic congresses) but continued to kick it down the street for another day. Mark my word there will be a compromise on Christmas Eve that all of Bush's tax cuts will be extending for at least two years. This is nothing but political posturing by both parties.

Really people. It's people who want to defend this country. Nuff said. Look- it's a win-win situation. Gay people don't feel discriminated against per the Dems side, and by letting them open serve, they're either looking some a-hole from the top sending them all to the front line, getting their a's kicked by some ignorant eee-haa and his gang that is worried that "some dude is looking at their junk" therefore pleasing the republicans because "it's one less person that will vote liberal/democrat next year".

My take? Let them serve. Without looking too deepy into it- they are people who want to defend the democrats and republicans alike. Let them serve, who cares.

Hey, don't get mad at me- I think what will happen is that the gay community is going to get and unforunate amount of recognition because of this- to the point where they're actually going to bury themselves on this one. Take for example:

Joe: Hi I'm Joe in the shower at basic training. How are you?

Other guy: Why are you talking to me in the shower, what are you gay or something?

                                            Joe: Acutally, yes I am.

Other guy: PUNCH, KICK, STAB, KICK.

Which is something similar to your fears, which I think is realistic. Maybe some military memebers don't care. But there's always going someone who won't put up with it, and unforunate the people that are going to suffer are going to be the ones fighting for this to go trough. I mean, why the hell would you put a bunch of gay dudes in with a bunch of hopped up strong military people? I mean, that's stupid.

Trust me on this one, you bigots. Gay people in the military just want to do their jobs. They could give a crap what you bigots think about them. As far as the threatening remarks, you can stuff those too. You altogether have too much imagination. Check yourselves. These people (and that's what they are) just want to serve their country with dignity. They don't need your disrespectful remarks when they are about to go into combat and risk their lives for you. Just shut your pie holes.

Too bad the macho men who sexually harrassed female soldiers could not deal with gay females either. The military lost a lot of well-trained, dedicated SOLDIERS with stupid, arcane ideas of who is "fit."

ARRIVE--------- I keep reading these posts by "veterans" who, knew lots of excellent homosexual soldiers.

I suppose I was just an anomaly, in the 4 years that I spent in the Marine Corps, I met one person, I suspected was gay.

Never did know for sure, he was an acceptable marine, nothing special.

I keep wondering how I got through 4 years and never met one"for sure" homosexual.

IDAHO SPUD----- Okay sunshine, you do not have enough authority to tell me to shut my pie hole and you don't have the skills to do it any other way.

The homsexuals attach a lot more importance to themselves, than ,is actually the case.

They are not a problem, they are an annoyance.

Annoyances in the mud/blood areas, tend to get taken care of informally and finally.

You folks don't even know enough to know, what you don't know.

You don't have to shoot someone, or frag someone to get rid of them.

You simply don't give cover when you can, you shoot away or you shoot high.

The homosexuals have two phrases they seem to be inordinately fond of, "why are they so afraid of gays"? If they complain too vociferously, they must be represssing homosxexual urges.

Friendly advice , lose those sayings, you want to use them in the company of young aggressive men, in a group, where aggressiveness is prized and encouraged, go ahead.

These young men use violence as a integral part of their lifestyle and are encouraged to kill people.

If you want to go into that life style with the idea that the law will be there to take care of you, go ahead.

It is time that three homophobes were separated from the military and younger fresher minds took those slots. The greatest general of the ancient world, Alexander the Greek, conquered the known world in his time -- his homosexuality neither disrupted his military nor caused any reduction in effectiveness.

EVERY Samuri was inducted to the Samuri code by his mentor/master in an explicitly homosexual relationship, and not the best US combat warrior could ever defeat a mediocre Samuri in hand-to-hand combat.

King David in the Bible, the winingest general the Isrealis ever had, then or now, was openly homosexual with King Saul's son.

You can argue what you like but the historical facts call you a liar if you claim that gays cannot produce the best soldiers the world has ever seen. In fact, showing up the wimpy straights could be the cause of homophobia -- the gays are just so obviously better qualified that it's embarrassing to the red-neck drunk 30% of whinny complainers.

There are already gays in the military. That's why 80,000 have been separated by DADT, many of them with more important skills and medals for bravery being badmouthed by some drunken redneck lowbrow privates who never distinguished themselves in combat at all.

It is clear that many officers in the military VIOLATED THIS LAW, they did ASK, they witchhunted private emails from people who never TOLD. If you are kicking out somebody, let's kick out every officer who violated the law and revoke their pension! Gay taxpayers should not be supporting homophobe haters who break the law!

I'll trade you, one hatefilled homophobe kicked to the curb for every gay you bully. This policy ends fast when the ASKERS get their ASK kicked!

McCain has aided and abetted criminal conduct of officers who DID ASK, poked into secret private emails like they were wikileakers. The DADT law is clear: DON'T ASK! Violaters must get their ASK kicked. One officer will be fired for every gay discharge. Gay Taxpayers do not need to support homophobe bullies and their criminal acts. The bums certainly deserve to lose their pensions for dishonorable actions. They need to find out what it is like to look for a job at 45 years old with no pension, no medical care waiting for you. Trade you ONE FOR ONE, bullies! Go ahead McCain, MAKE MY DAY!

Hey, Idaho Spud-1126196 Did I ONCE say I wanted to beat up a gay person? No, I did not and I have no intentions. I could give a rat arse less if you're gay or straight, however I can only speak for myself. My opinion was strictly regarding what might potentially happen to gay people that serve openly in the military when put up against "homophobe" soliders. NOT saying everyone is or will act that way, but that situation is bound to happen. In a way, I kind of think DADT protects the gay community serving in the armed forces.

And Arrive-1, your comments are really cute. Did you pick up your come backs while serving as a ID checker in the cafeteria in the service? If your comprehension skills are not functioning properly, that's not my problem. I never addressed that there was not an issue with men/women, I simply mean this might add to any issues right now. And, since you mentioned not being able to read, I'll say it again- let them serve.

All I was talking about was potential issues if they get rid of it. That is all. I am not a bigot, although I love it when the bigot card gets played because it's hard to think logically about a situation. Is it THAT far out of whack that by lifting DADT the gay community may be looking at placing themselves in some kind of danger AGAINST bigots that serve in the military?? (NOT THAT IT IS OKAY- that's not what I'm saying) Personally if I were serving with gay people, I wouldn't care, and I don't think it matters the sexuality of the person next to you when you're being shot at.WITH THAT being said, I'll say it again, let them serve!

I see/talk with 15 to 25 young marine officers more or less on a daily basis..

I continue to hear about the surveys used by the Obama administration and how these huge percentages are in favor of repealing DADT.

I listen to these young marine officers and especially, afer they have had a couple of brewskis,it comes out that roughly 60% of them already have their papers filled out and will enter them when DADT is repealed.

Okay, repeal it, it will be fun to watch the libs, when the draft is reinstituted, I have written my eklected reps and required the to pass a law that allows any heterosexual person serving in the all volunteer military to be allowed to leave without prejudice, after a 6month period that will allow time for the draft to be replaced and train the influx of draftees. The universal draft of all able bodied men and women will gibe the libbies a new new perspective on life.

I can't tell you how much I will enjoy watching the homesexuals and liberals drafted into the military
