In a speech today to the Detroit Economic Club, Indiana Congressman -- and potential presidential candidate -- Mike Pence outlined his agenda to grow the economy and restore what he called "American exceptionalism."
“To restore American exceptionalism, we must end all this Keynesian spending and get back to the practice of free market economics," he said. "The free market is what made America’s economy the greatest in the world, and we cannot falter in our willingness to defend it.”
In outlining his economic agenda, Pence used the acronym S.T.A.R.T:
S - Sound monetary policy
T - Tax relief and reform
A - Access to American energy
R - Regulatory reform
T - Trade
Answering audience questions after his speech, Pence addressed the possibility of a 2012 presidential run. "Well, let me say my little family and I have been humbled at the encouragement," he said, sidestepping a direct answer. His hope is whoever runs will "embrace the ideas that I have expressed in Detroit."

Access to American energy?
Geez- these people really were talking about going back to all the same old-same old, weren't they?
Dirll baby, Dirll, eh wot??.
Good Afternoon Drive-by:
The new Republican party looks just like the old Republican party. No ideas, but vote NO!
All this yammerin about exceptionalism from these right wing nuts!
Can anyone tell me EXACTLY when America no longer was exceptional? Other than 1.20.09?
This is nothing more than a thinly veiled code word for the tea baggers!
Oil companies do not drill where there is no prospect.
I really do have laugh out loud moments when I see today's Republicans who believe they have the answers to our economy.
Where have they been?
Oh and by the way -
Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., left little room for compromise on the issue of extending the expiring income tax cuts, suggesting that if they are not made permanent by the end of the year, Republicans should redouble their efforts to do so in the new Congress.
Pence said on Thursday that he was backing up that pledge with legislation co-sponsored by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., to permanently extend the cuts for both the middle class and wealthy Americans.
____________
And this will help - how?
DeMint & Pence.
Now there's real leadership. Lol.
Leadership right straight back into the ditch. What the hell is wrong with the people of this country? If it's against their interests, they want MORE of it!
Go figgure.
Why does Pence think that a Democratic Congress and a Democratic President should rush out and make the Bush tax cuts permanent, something that a Republican Congress and a Republican President were unable to do. The Democrats should pass the middle class extension using the same reconciliation process that the Bush tax cuts were passed with in the first place. Let the Pugs cry and whine all they want!
An extension of two years plays into their game plan. In two years there is a presidential election and the tax issue will be front and center.

...because if they had done that upfront Senate rules would have required the means to pay for those tax cuts and yet every republican talking head speaks of fiscal responsibility....
Why is Pence using the same acronym for his economic agenda as the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty? Is he trying to muddy the waters? He should be careful with that - his own party members will be the ones to get confused and rush out to urge their representatives to vote for START - contrary to what Sen. Kyl is trying to pull.

So that Glenn Beck can diagram it on chalk board for all his bewilded conehead pupils out there to absorb. That happens all the time when the coneheads are denied their understanding of their history."
There's no change Glenda could link those letters in his wild azz fanaties why Milton Feidam hasn't worked for the last ten yrs before he starts crying; I bet.

I wonder how many people in that audience in Detroit think that they really would have been better off if GM and Chrysler failed as Pence advocated allowing to happen?

And this is for a five year period that uses taxes collected over ten. $1T OF ADDITIONAL FEDERAL SPENDING.
http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories/2010/November/29/Fiscal-Times-Reinhardt.aspx
"Well, you should understand that the bulk of this bill is simply to extend health insurance to millions of Americans who cannot afford it, either because they are poor or have pre-existing conditions, and that will require $1 trillion of additional federal spending over the period 2014 to 2019. In fact, I think that the president would have been well advised just to leave it at that and not put all this other stuff in."
An article by an industry rag put out by Kaiser Health would be fair, impartial and free of misleading distortions? I'll take the scoring by the CBO over some distorted industry rag that shows close to $100B in savings over the first 10 years and nearly $1T over the following 10 years.
Actually it is referenced from Mother Jones (well known conservative rag..sarcasm), as part of an article that claims Medicare is better at controlling costs than private health insurance. You would have grasped this if you read the article instead killing the messenger.
Also, I can accept the CBO's figures. Why would the two be in dispute? The $100B is savings in the deficit not savings on health spending. If you collect $1T in taxes over 10 years and spend $900B in 5 then you have reduced the deficit by $100B.
Has the man never read a history book? Or a book on economics? He believes in a myth, probably along with Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. America prospered not because of capitalism, but often in spite of it. The Founding Fathers were pretty clueless about capitalism - they were merchants who wanted free trade and protection on the seas, large plantation owners dependent on bank loans from Britain, and ultimately industries who wanted cheap labor and tariff protection.
Why is he there? He should be in Washington earning his salary and perks we pay him.
They have more time off than anyone else, yet they wont give the time to the American people to help solve problems to make our lives better, problems such as unemployment insurance for those out of work, the tax cuts etc. They will drag their feet with all kinds of procedural and off the wall reasons for not doing the peoples work.
There needs to be some changes made to their work schedule, with today's technology and fast air travel, there is no need for them to be away from Washington as much as they are. Either that or take a pay cut for everytime you are not in DC.
I dont want to hear any nonsense about the president's schedule, he is available 24/7, 365, no matter where he is or what is going on. There is no comparison with the schedules and work hours.
Did Pence explain to the audience how it would have been better for the US economy to let the auto industry and Michigan fail! Then we can only have auto industry from Japan, Korea, Iraq (lol)......ya' know the free market stuff.
The exceptional cars made anywhere but in the US, by us!
pence ain't got no sense!
Pence been haning 'round with Dan Quayle too long.
And speaking of leadership:
Tomorrow. Be There Or Be Square
Over the past few days, a growing number of lawmakers has publicly embraced the idea of extending expiring tax cuts for families making as much as $1 million a year. They include newly elected Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), who argued on "Fox News Sunday" that "we should draw the line in the sand for millionaires."
The idea's chief proponent, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), said that raising the income threshold from $250,000, as Obama has proposed, has the potential to unite fractious Democrats behind a single strategy on the tax cuts, which are set to expire Dec. 31 unless Congress acts.
Schumer said the higher threshold also would make it far more difficult for Republicans to say no.
"There's a strong view in the caucus that if we make the dividing line $1 million, it becomes a very simple argument: We are for giving the middle class a tax break; they're for tax cuts for millionaires," Schumer said Sunday. At $250,000, he said, the message is "too muddled. It's much clearer at $1 million. It unites our base and the independent voters we lost in this election."
The campaign comes as Obama is preparing to host a high-stakes meeting on taxes and other issues Tuesday morning with congressional leaders from both parties - the first such gathering since Republicans hammered Democrats at the polls earlier this month. Republicans are insisting on extending the cuts for families at all income levels, and the coming battle over taxes will be the first test of the new balance of power in Washington.
"There is unity among Democrats about the best way forward, including the importance of making middle-class tax cuts permanent, opposition to borrowing $700 billion to make tax cuts permanent for millionaires and billionaires and a willingness to have a good faith conversation with both Republicans and Democrats about the best path forward," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Sunday.

President Obama SHOULD meet with all and listen to all sides. No question. Be polite. Be respectful.
In the meantim, we wait across the street from the White House with hot cocoa and fingers crossed. Hoping for some word. Some final words of wisdom from President Obama to the wealthy and GOP.
NO. HELL NO!!!! And btw, Happy Holidays.
- Barack Obama
Irony.
Those Keynsian policies saved a very important industry in Detroit........
Not to mention this continued chest thumping by the right wing about "American Exceptionalism" is ironically contributing to the fall of........American Exceptionalism.
The more we arrogantly think we are exceptional while doing nothing to show that exceptionalism, the farther we actually get from being exceptional.
The last time the US had real capitalism was in the 1700s...I don't know what history he is reading but the US government has involved itself in economic matters(opposite of what free market capitalism is which doesn't exist anywhere in the world as the form they claim it to be in) since its beginning. Somebody needs to tell these whack job fools that the founding fathers they love so much were radical liberals...
Pence and Demint have no answers but poverty and declining living conditions. Just take a look at Demint's South Carolina and see what they have in mind for the rest of the country: http://jimdemints-southcarolina.blogspot.com
