Murkowski is apparent winner in Alaska Senate race

AP file

***UPDATE*** NBC News has now declared Lisa Murkowski the apparent winner in the Alaska Senate race.

After a two-week count of write-in ballots, the Alaska Senate race has been called for incumbent Republican Lisa Murkowski.

Murkowski, who defeated Tea Party challenger Joe Miller, will be the first write-in candidate to win election to the Senate since South Carolina's Strom Thurmond in 1954.

She opted to launch the write-in campaign after Miller defeated her in the state's Aug. 24 Republican primary.

From the AP:

Murkowski has a lead of about 10,000 votes, a total that includes 8,153 ballots in which Miller observers challenged over things like misspellings, extra words or legibility issues.

It was not immediately clear how Miller will proceed. He and his advisers have vowed to take legal action over what they contend is an unfair tally in Murkowski's favor, but Miller has maintained he'll stop fighting if the math doesn't work in his favor.

Officials say they have about 700 votes left to count.

And we wonder why the polititians can't get along? The problem is with the whole system and being to pass laws any time they want. One of the things that Obama promised was transparancy and I haven't seen too much of that. They shouldn't be able to pass a major law without putting it to a vote of the american people. They have forgotten that they work for us and not for the major companies that pad their pockets so they will pass legistlation that favors their business. Term limits and being held accountable is a good step in the right direction. Most dems and repubs are the same they are in there for their own greedy reasons they don't care for the american people.

I'm behind the changes the Tea Party will bring to DC---smaller government, fiscal sanity, constitutionalism---but there's something about Miller's goons "arresting" a reporter that makes me doubt his devotion to liberty. Ditto the thugs who tackled and stomped that protestor outside Rand Paul's debate...though Paul immediately tossed the stomper out on his ear and apologized, while Miller was mum. (Yeah, Limbaugh, the stomper gently pushed her to the pavement by resting his foot on her shoulder. Or maybe she head-butted him on the sole of his foot? Mussolini's brownshirts would have been proud!) www.newsprism.com

It sends a serious message about Sarah Palin....the people who know her best have little respect for her judgement. They may still be smarting from the way she deserted her constituency in favor of $$$$. Let her serve Alaska as a tour guide at 1 million per episode rather than speak for them from an elected office.

But; I have to say that it is way better than the way Conservatives are Rush-ing (no pun intended) faster and faster into Fascism. It seems pretty simple. Murkowski heard the tripe spilling from Millers mouth and did what she thought was best for Alaska.

While I like seeing the Tea Party lose as much as the next guy, why are you celebrating a Murkowski victory? She originally only became senator because of her daddy governor, she was against any regulation against big oil even in the wake of the BP mess (talk about poor judgment!)... and she's perhaps the single most shrill member of the senate. This was a lose-lose.

Joe we never could have taken that seat. But we saw Palin go down in flames and land on her huge, size 46 rear.

                That's a win.

                So we had a "win-lose."

Not as good as a "win-win," but not a "lose-lose". either.

@ Tom... while I understand your sentiment, that would be a loss-bigger loss, not a win-loss. I know you all hate Palin (I'm no fan myself), but you're exchanging a clueless guy who would be completely marginalized in the Senate, would have had no power except a Yes or No vote, in a "party" which will essentially dissolve over the next few years, for a grade-A bioootch who is pure establishment politics, completely typifies and fights tooth-and-nail for the GOP stance on energy deregulation, and WILL have power in the new Senate.

Seriously, go watch her on YouTube and tell me you'd be jazzed to have her as a senator. Maybe she has a brain, but she's as corrupt as they come. And she'll have power.

Yeah, the Tea Party sucks, but they'll be powerless in the face of political reality, so why libs get all up in arms about them is beyond me. She will not be powerless. Be careful what you wish for.

                  #53.3 - Wed Nov 17, 2010 3:59 PM EST

Well, she is a Republican, so why wouldn't see vote for big oil....If you are a Democrat, see you in 2012. I'll be right beside you getting rid of the Republicans. It will be a lot easier for us in 2012.

                  Joe

So you are saying Miller was such a complete moron we would have been better off with him than Murkowski because he would point a gun and blown his own head off? (Figuratively, I mean. With these Tea Party idiots, you never know when they are serious about weapons!).

Look, that might be correct. It's always hard to tell which of two adversaries would be the lesser evil.

In the final analysis, Alaska was, is, and probably will remain, a Republican seat. I can't get excited about what kind of Republican holds it - they are all worthless, if you ask me.

Maybe we'll get lucky and Alaska and Texas will both secede.

The amazing part of this to me is that this woman was defeated in the primaries, and then rose above it, submitted herself as a write-in, and WON in spite of all the barriers put in place by the tea-partiers. Amazing. Palin would have everyone think that all of Alaska is like her - thankfully they are not. There is hope that the radicals (on either side) will not prevail. Now, we need to see those elected do what they complained that the Obama administration had not done - just to keep it "fair", they have less than 2 years to make all of us happy. I'm excited!
