Pelosi on tax cuts, running for minority leader, being 'demonized'

In an interview with NPR, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi talked about tax cuts, moving forward from an unsuccessful election, and why she’s running for minority leader.

On main reasons for running as minority leader:
Pelosi: I’m running to put together the strongest plan to work with the Republicans to solve problems. The biggest problem is unemployment. I hope we can work together to create jobs. And I do so with the overwhelming support of my caucus, not the unanimous support.

The Republicans have demonized you. How do you prevent that from hurting your party more than it already has?
Pelosi: Well, let me say this – when you say “more than it already has” – the reason the election results are what they are is because we have 9.5 percent unemployment in our country. We didn’t lose the election because of me. In any circumstance, when you have 9.5 percent unemployment, any party that cannot turn that into political gain should hang up the gloves, I said that before the election. The reason they had to try to take me down is because I’ve been effective in fighting the special interests in Washington, D.C. I’m also the most significant attractor of support for the Democrats. So I’m not looking back on this. They asked me to run, I’m running, and, again, our members understand that they made me a target because I’m effective.

On extending Bush-era tax cuts:
Pelosi: The position that we have, and which is the position that the president has put forth, is that everybody should get a tax cut in our country. The problem comes when you give an additional tax cut to the wealthiest 2 percent that will heap $700 billion in debt onto our children and our grandchildren.

What about a temporary extension?
Well, our position in the House has been that we support the tax cuts for everyone, but not an additional tax cut at the high end. It’s too costly. Those tax cuts have been in effect for a very long time. They did not create jobs. In fact, with the tax cuts that President Obama had in the recovery package, we have now 10 straight months of private sector job growth. So from day one, President Obama and this Congress have been job creators, at the same time giving tax cuts to the middle class, which do create jobs.

Is there an advantage to being less visible in the minority?
Pelosi: This isn’t about – it isn’t about me. Maybe the Republicans will take a course of action that will solve problems. God bless them if they do. But maybe they will pursue what they have said, which is to privatize Social Security, to make Medicare a voucher, to resist our initiatives. So it’s – the opportunity that is there is to have clarity. Maybe they will be more eloquent in defining themselves than we could have ever been in defining them.

Curious what your definition of productive is? If it is the amount of legislation passed over the objection of the majority of the americans, the answer is yes! The run a great dictatorship.

She was very productive and it makes Republicans mad as hell! I prefer we keep her as minority leader because she works. Get ready for the drunken slob named Boehner to be very entertaining with his drunk slurred speach while the house is in session. Get ready for the Republicans and Tea partiers to fight over pork. I wonder how long it will take the tea partiers to realize they all come from states that keep themselves afloat with federal money because none of them pay enough wages and therefore cannot collect enough taxes to survive without the federal pork. That will be an awakening. Good luck with that.

As someone who voted, I can tell you it wasn't JUST because of her, but she was a BIG part of it. As for being "demonized", it's not demonizing when you're making fun of things she said in her own speeches. Away from the fog of uncertainty!

The bottom line questions are simple:

1. Did the legislation the Democrats enacted, including the stimulus package and health-care reform, benefit the lower and middle classes and create jobs. To anyone but the terminally delusional, the answer is a resounding "Yes!"

2. Will the changes the Republicans propose, including tax cut extensions for the wealthy, privatization of Social Security and repeal of the Mortgage Interest deduction, lower the deficit, create jobs and benefit working Americans? The answer this time is a resounding "No!" They will add another $700 Billion to the deficit in unpaid debt, throw more middle-class Americans below the poverty line, and increase our already-shameful foreclosure rate.

This is not rocket science, people. Get past the buzzwords and the rhetoric and look at the economics. The numbers don't lie, even if our elected officials do.

I've been conservative most of my life, lean libertarian now. Pelosi is all that is wrong in politics. From her special jet to her bar tab to the arrogance of leading a party that rammed through a 2,000 page bill that no one, and I mean no one, could understand.

Why in the world do we want politicians to hide the laws they pass from us and rush them through without a clear path that affect so many? Why couldn't this party pass 10 smaller bills, each addressing issues, clearly spelled out, without all the legalspeak? Why couldn't they bring a new tone?

Under her leadership with a majority in the house, a super-majority in the Senate, if they didn't get a bunch of stuff done they would have been the most incompetent in history. But what they did was dishonest, maybe criminal, and certainly damaging.

When they should have been focusing on our economic collapse, they were paying off bankers, health insurance companies, and unions with 100's of BILLIONS of tax dollars. When they should have been setting the example by trimming budgets, lowering salaries, eliminating the perks and parties and bar tabs, they instead threw some of the biggest parties ever seen in DC including the inauguration.

Sorry folks - this election was in part exactly about Pelosi - free spending, liquor swilling, lying, defensive, ultra-partisan freeloader who has sold our nation down the river.

We are 1/2 done - 2012 we finish the job and get back to being America.

Pelosi is very good at her job, and she is tough. When a man, like Tom "The Hammer" DeLay is effective, well that's different because he's a man, and he's a Republican (schoolyard bully), and that's respected. Hillary Clinton, and perhaps even Sarah Palin (grizzly mama) are demonized in the same way.

For example, if you praise Pelosi's push for "Pay-Go" the first criticism is that it requires taxation. Hate to break it to you, but we can't just cut spending. Most of all piddly stuff like ear marks (pork) that is so minimal as to be a joke--a sad joke that Republicans are wasting time bickering about it. And as posted above, it is the "red" states (with exception perhaps of Texas) that rely on these funds the most.

One statement Pelosi made that I question is whether taxes for the middle class created jobs. Tax cuts don't create jobs, no matter who benefits. However, it is true that the middle class and working poor will spend their tax savings, which stimulates the economy. The richest 2% invest their money, and if they spend on a yacht, for example, it's not enough volume to stimulate the economy.

We need construction (infrastructure spending) and more money in the pockets of the middle class to boost basic supply and demand. And we need to reduce the debt, which won't happen by cutting spending alone. If Teapublican Something for Nothing Crowd insists on tax cuts for the richest 2%, we do need a Pay Go program in which they must find a way to pay for these cuts. Otherwise, the deficit will continue to skyrocket and things will get worse.

Paul, I'm really sorry you can't think for yourself, its sad. The TARP was a Bush Bill; and the american people have been paid back(95% to be exact). Without the the stimuls bill, we would have had another 3-4 million unemployed.(you are correct that I cannot prove that number; but, 95% of the economists would agree with that. As for the bailouts of GM and Chrysler; well Paul, thuink about it; how maney jobs would have been lost(include the aftermarket jobs) do you think would have been lost? As for the health care bill, I wish it would have been stronger; but, you must start with something, we will statrt with this one. Try and remember what happened 2 yrs ago when we elected President Obama. We the people voted FOR his agenda; which included health care reform. Unfortunatly; we have a political party that cares NOTHING about middleclass Americans and sat on the sidelines doning NOTHING except for being obstructionist. That showed me at least; that the really are the Party of the uberrich, and they have pulled the wool over many, many eyes. in closing Paul, i urge you to read the newspapers! Then start thinking for yourself!!

Do we have disallusional liberals mostly defining the above? madame speaker Pelosi was not good for this nation....behine the door negotiations with one party, hers. Spending our money like a drunken sailor while helping special interest groups (her husband) receive perks not available by the citizens.

How many jobs did she create? How did she help to impact the economy?

But she was good for the one-liners: You must first pass the bill to see what is in the bill!

Did you know that every worker in the US got a $400 or more tax cut with the stimulus plan?

We need to blow up the filibuster and repeal mandatory health care.

The US Senate can change the senate rule, including how many votes it takes to overcome a filibuster. The Republicans will change the number of votes needed to invoke cloture to 51 the day after they take power.

I say screw them!!!

Democratcs should change it now while they still can and use it as leverage.

They passed Obamacare and now some of the Dem "yes men" who passed it are finding out what's in it.... and they don't like it... but it is George Bush's fault...

"A top Democrat in the Senate on Friday pledged to repeal a provision of the new healthcare law that requires businesses to file tax forms on transactions of more than $600"

"Baucus noted that the change was originally proposed under former Republican President George W. Bush."

@AcousticTherapy

I disagree with at least two of your statements:

1) If the legislation enacted were so beneficial to the economy, why did unemployment rise 50% under the Obama-Pelosi watch? When Pelosi took over as Speaker in November, 2006, unemployment only stood at (roughly 4%)...by the time Obama took over as President in January 2008, it was under 7%. Ever since, it has fluttered in the 9-10% range for the better part of the last two years. That is not even close to conclusive evidence that their policies helped the economy. And their fanciful "well, it would've been worse if we had done nothing" argument smacks of the same argument FDR used in the 1930's. History repeating itself, because even with FDR's myriad of reforms, it took World War II to bring the US back to full economic health.

2) Privatization of Social Security is the best remedy. The central reason that Social Security is failing is that FDR catered to the seniors vote and allowed those already retired or retiring to have their retirement funded by the current workers. Had it been privatized from the beginning, retirees could only withdraw from what they put in...guess what? That means inherent solvency of the system. Yes, those early retirees may have suffered, but no worse than the previous generation. In effect, that generation got a free ride. And the way it stands now, my children's and grandchildren's generations will be made to suffer a retirement with no Social Security. So all FDR did was kick the can down a few generations, all for more votes.

And BTW, the Mortgage Interest Deduction is useless anyway. I've yet to see it significantly exceed the standard deduction, unless a person lives in a very expensive home. For average Americans, its removal won't even be missed!

While much of the vitriol thrown at Pelosi is just overinflated blather from the knuckle dragging crowd she must accept the fact that during her tenure the negative intensity of the public's perception of Congress soared. Take some responsibility Nancy! You failed to properly make your argument. She is simply behaving like some sort of deposed queen. These people fail to behave in not only their own best interests but in the best interest of those who elected them. You passed significant legislation but at what cost? The rise of these nutty Tea Partiers? The legitamization of the Far Right? That's a huge price we paid. You failed to properly convey your message. Somehow you were bested by that puppy dog Boehner. That should be shameful enough. Step away with a little grace. I back Obama but Pelosi is an albatross around his neck. He needs to be rid of her as a House leader.

By the way the overwhelming majority of the votes I have cast in my life have been for Democrats. My grandfather was a Dem. State Rep. but I cannot justify this divergence from reality from which Pelosi appears to so suffer. Embarrassing!

The fact that the Dems voted for comrade Nancy as Speaker of the House highlights the far left turn the party has made in the past ten years. Don't have any issues with a woman House Speaker, but this woman?? Hell no!! The best thing the Dems could do is thank Nancy for her "leadership" and move on.

Pelosi: I’m running to put together the strongest plan to work with the Republicans to solve problems.

Amazing......when she took the helm as Speaker of the House, she indicated she was going to "block" anything and everything during the latter days of the Bush Administration. Then she "failed" to work with anyone on legislation during the last two years. And now, she is wanting to "work" with the Republicans since she has the short end of the stick, and she will not get her small gavel as the Minority Leader. Maybe someone could recommend that she be an usher.

She has been, and continues to be, a major part of the problems we have in the Congressional Halls.

Demonizing.....NO.....just the facts.

The problem comes when you give an additional tax cut to the wealthiest 2 percent that will heap $700 billion in debt onto our children and our grandchildren.

Since when were the wealthiest 2 percent allowed to enact deficit spending? Those 2 percenters are just not offsetting the bills of the congress. Seems as though congress spend the tax proceeds from the rich before they actually received the money. Were they counting on being able to remove the tax breaks before they actually did so? The age old adage of counting your chickens before they hatch comes to mind.

Congress is the ones that have heaped $700 billion in debt onto our children and our grandchildren. And she participated and now tries to lay blame on people with money.

I can't believe you're still fighting over a battle you clearly one. But you were definitely warned. And as the time draws nearer, it won't be Nancy Pelosi or any other Democrat who will be coming for your guns, brother. You'd better believe that it will be those who you've supported through a blind, ignorant rage: the big corporations which now own you; and not just American companies; we're talking Saudi Arabian, Brazilian, Japanese, Chinese you name it, they own us. Thanks to the latest election for the people, of the people, by the corporations, you are now a lot less American than you were before November 2nd. Because of our huge debt, anyone who owns a piece of America owns a piece of you. These large corporations also own the military, and they're the ones most likely to disapprove of your weapons cache, not us. Or maybe they'll just make the ammunition really hard to get - or keep. Thanks for selling America out to the highest bidder. I wonder who made the most money from this past election. Think corporations made any money? Let's see how many jobs they create just out of sheer gratitude of the gift that the super smart voters gave to them - Republican power over the distribution of the world's wealth. Hopefully they don't just decide to take the profit from the publicity they get from it, and instead of adding jobs they just take the cash windfall and file bankruptcy. The richest 2% got that way - just that way. They don't make jobs: they sail yachts and fly in private jets. They have so much money they don't even need to keep track. They could not spend it in their lifetimes they have so much wealth. And because of that they do as they please. And as soon as they dismiss us as something insignificant or contrary to their survival, we will become extinct faster than you can undangle a chad. Why educate the masses and face compromise when you can simply fool the idiots into stepping off a cliff?

I think there's a country where 98% of us don't live. And it ain't America.

Thank you for voting Republican. Geniuses.

The most productive? I thought we live in a country where democracy rules. The meaning of democracy to me means the people hold the ruling power. No matter how productive the democrats were trying to be they forgot the most fundamental principle of all and that was the failure to listen to the majority of people. Even though the message, after the election, was loud and clear they still try to justify what they did was the right thing to do and fail to accept that the healthcare mess they shoved down our throats in such a deceitful way, was their biggest downfall. If they had put all that wasted energy in creating jobs instead and work on a healthcare reform later on, the outcome would have been very different today.

What they did to the American people is totally irresponsible and something that no one expects from a democratic state.

So Pelosi is "effective and productive". What planet do you live on? She is effective and productive only when it comes to bankrupting America. Nothing more but nothing less. She is the most unproductive and ineffective person ever in Congress as far as I am concerned, and anyone who supports her does not have the best interest of our country and the common good of our citizens at heart. Ms. Pelosi is only interested in the rich people of San Francisco, whose taxes she wants to increase along with everyone else's. She is one of the uber-rich who can afford to pay more taxes, and I am not sure that she came by it honestly. Her net worth has gone from about $4M when she entered Congress, to over $25M at the present time. Just how did she make all this money, and why does the left wing support a woman named Pelosi, when they hate every other citizen that they classify as "the rich" by rainsing their taxes?

Effective? She is delusional, for the last several months media has been reporting on the stagnant or declining jobs in the private sector. In fact unemployment is forecast to rise to over 10% before the end of the year. Most of the Democratic caucus see her as a liability and want her gone. Remember this is the same arrogant ass that made statements like "We won so just get over it!" and "We'll just have to wait until it is passed to see what's in it." She also is mistaken in her remarks about the upper 2% receiving "an additional tax cut". The Bush cuts reduced everyone's taxes not just the rich, in renewing all of those cuts, no one will get any additional tax relief, just a renewal of what already is in effect. The renewal of all the current Bush cuts represent 3.2 trillion dollars. The upper 2% figures to be 700 billion, that leaves 2.5 trillion over the remaining 58% of us that pay taxes. With the current rates those 2% already pay 35% of their income in Federal Tax not to mention state and local income taxes whose rates are often tied to the federal rates. They also pay the lions share of sales taxes because they are also responsible for the lions share of the spending. The new rate would become 39.6% or there abouts a net increase in tax of about 5%. Her comments of being an effective tool for anti lobbying efforts is also fallacy especially after the health care reform bill debacle. So what Nancy is telling us is that she hasn't learned a damn thing except to now hide what she was doing openly before.

That reason right there just shows how little democrats care about life. First off, they want to kill you before you even have a chance of your own in life through abortions. Than after they milk you for every penny they can, they want to kill you off so they don't have to pay for you.

Today, the average salary of an American citizen is bout $50,400 per year. The average annual salary of a federal employee is about $74,800. This is a published fact. If benefits were included, the annual differential would be far greater. Also, an American soldier makes about $22,500 a year, while every US Congress person makes $174,000 per year. If you look into the details you will find that Ms. Pelosi played a hugh role in these disparities, which in my opinion, make our country's wage scale "ass-backwards". Our Congress persons should make soldiers wages, and our soldiers should make Congressman's wages. Our country is simply screwed up, mainly because of criminal politicians like Pelosi and Reid.

I guess federal employees are easy targets these days. I left a private industry over 20 years ago to work for the Government. I took a 20% pay cut and received less benefits to work the for Government. I made a decision that job stability was more important that pay. Now people claim that I am unfairly benefiting from being a Federal employee because my employer is not laying off employees. I've paid my dues over the last 20+ years for a time like this. If more people would do a little better planning then we would all be better off. Too many people live beyond their means, take too many risks, and then expect someone else to bail them out when things turn bad. I still make less than my counterpart in private industry and the largest part of my retirement is social security and personal savings (IRA type savings account). So lay off people that have given their careers to the government!

    Alias,

I think the figures you give are askew a little, while I dont't know the exact figures so i will not dispute the numbers, i will say I am a government employee in a supervisory position we have 30+ people in our office and only 4 are paid higher them me. and i earn some $40,000 less than what you say is average.

What i think should be looked into is how many of the $100,000+ employees actually work outside of Washington, i think that Paul F was right that most of those people are the ones who sit on there arses in DC and take the credit for the work we do in the field.

Never let those damned facts get in the way of a good story. Right? We are becoming a nation of ill-informed, uneducated saps thanks to FOX and all the aforementioned idiots. And who benefits? Once I started hearing her statements from her own mouth, I literally couldn't believe my ears. She is not only an uber-liberal, she is absolutely nuts. Koo-Koo for Cocoa puffs. And then when I began to reflect on all those years that I dilligently slaved over my Income tax return to be sure I got it just right. (Don't want to cheat the government out of their money that I worked for. They really need it.) Then to see how this bubblehead and her cronies just throw it all away as fast as they can.....just makes me sick.

Always with the jet. Are you going to complain about whoever the Republicans put in as Speaker as well?

Can't you people understand that the Speaker of the House is the third in line of succession? As such, that person is afforded above-the-ordinary security and travel arrangements. And that person does not travel with the President or Vice President because if one of the planes should go down, someone would need to assume control of the government.

So stop whining and start exercising some common sense.

Go fight another war nobody wants, only this time draft the troops from any family making over 1 million /yr. Are your taxes going up? thank the Republicks for the bill. Profits from major corporations are way up, the only people not doing so well is everyone else. Once again thank the Republicks. When they were in, they sold Congress to the highest bidder, with whiney passing out checks from the tobacco industry on the house floor. Remember how the petroleum president and Darth cheney gave tax breaks to the oil companies just as they reaping the highest profits in corporate history, they didn't pay for their war of choice, everything that came out of their mouths was a total lie. Do you think having the CEO of one of the largest health insurance companies as Senate leader had anything to do with the Republicks refusal to deal with the healthcare problems facing this country. Obama's raising your taxes, Obama's raising your taxes, Obama's raising your taxes. See you've got to keep repeating things until the propaganda sinks in. They never listened, they are arrogant, and they didn't understand that it was their policies that are pushing us down even further, where was the bounce back after the recession? Adding 150,000 people per month to the workforce, hmmmm, lets see, it will take 8 years before we get back to 4% unemployment since we are adding another million per year of new people who are wanting to work in this country. Keep using smoke and mirrors, this time noone is falling for it.

Well, Larry, your party is now part owner of the problems, and the success or failure of whatever comes next, along with mine. Time to put your money where your mouth is.

If the situation has not improved by 2012, they will have no one to blame but themselves. The smart money, however, says they will just blame the other half of the partnership...again...rather than taking on half the blame for failure.

Personally, I'd like to see things get better for the whole country, but apparently that's a subversive viewpoint to hold within the Republican party these days. At least, nothing in the current rhetoric from McConnell (whose sole purpose, evidently, is to destroy President Obama), Boehner, et al. suggests they suddenly give a rat's ass about working Americans. They seem bent on only one thing: getting back into the White House in 2012.

Anyone can throw stones from the sidelines when someone else is doing all the work (and taking all the risk). Let's see how willing the Republicans are to shoulder responsibility (and take the blame), now that they're actually in the game.

Talk is cheap, and political rhetoric is the cheapest talk.

The Republicans will not take the blame if they aren't successful in reducing the unemployment rate. They are upset when anyone points out the fact that they and the most recent Republican president are the ones responsible for the slide into this pit. It started in 2006 or 2007 and has only recently begun to turn around. Need I point out that President Obama was not president in 2007 so is not responsible for this mess he's been trying very hard to clean up without any help from Republicans. George Bush is still blaming Clinton because he took office in 2001 with a recession in place. I think if anyone bothered to check the recession he left for Obama was quite a bit worse. I hope the Republicans do find a way to fix things, but so far I haven't heard any ideas from them that are any different than the ones that led to this mess we're in.

How many more times did Bush blame Clinton

Bush complained about previous presidents every day. Obama only complains once since he has been president. I think he should be blaming Bush more like he did Clinton.

Obama does acknowledge that Bush is responsible for the economy, that he started two wars and that the atmosphere at MMS was under his watch.

        For those who need reminding:

        North Korea:

"Clinton reached a bilateral agreement that failed." -GW Bush

"The United States tried direct dialogue with the North Koreans in the '90s, and that resulted in the North Koreans signing onto agreements that they then didn't keep." Condi Rice

        Economy:

"Two-and-a-half years ago, we inherited an economy in recession." GW Bush

        Middle East:

"It wasn't all that long ago where a summit was called [referring to Clinton's summit] and nothing happened, and as a result we had significant intefadeh in the area." GW Bush

Re 9/11 (a three-fer, encompassing Clinton, Carter and Reagan):

"They looked at our response after the hostage crisis in Iran, the bombings of the Marine barracks in Lebanon, the first World Trade Center attack, the killing of American soldiers in Somalia, the destruction of two U.S. embassies in Africa, and the attack on the USS Cole. They concluded that free societies lacked the courage and character to defend themselves against a determined enemy." GW Bush

        Job losses:

"In the last six months of the prior administration, more than 200,000 manufacturing jobs were lost. We're turning that around." GW Bush (fun fact, at the time in his administration, there were job losses of 913,000)

        In 2008, re the economy:

A senior administration official says the budgetary problems stem from what is believed to be inadequate defense, intelligence and homeland security resources that were handed down from Clinton.

This woman is totally unreal. The Dem Socialists never made even a small effort  to include the Repub in anything when the Dems were in the majority. All the Dem Socialists did was spend money and I do not believe at all that they created any jobs with their stimulus bills or their bail outs and that horrible attempt at healthcare overhaul will end up costing millions after millions. It is already happening as the ins companies are raising rates at unprecedant levels, people are losing their ins because they can't afford to pay the high rates. Pelosi needs to go back to Ca along with the rest of the Dem Socialists, the whole state is a mess and they want the US Gov to bail them out now because of all their entitlement programs and high pensions.

It is very hard to compromise when one side wants a public option and the other side wants only to protect the insurance industry. It's hard to compromise on cap and trade when the other side denies global warming. It's hard to have card check when the other side thinks all unions at all times are bad and collective bargaining is unnecessary. (By the way, card check was not elimination of the secret ballot, it was a means to more quickly get to an election for union representation - like a petition drive. As it stands now well funded employers can delay elections up to 3 years while they fight the request before the NLRB.) Hard to compromise on campaign finance when one side wants disclosure and the other side doesn't. Show me where the middle ground is.

Blah, blah, blah - more gross generalizations. Such is the Republican party line, so artfully mimicked here. Not an original thought in a carload.

"Dem Socialist?" Please, get yourself another schtick, already! Most of the public services you and your family take advantage of every day came from "Dem Socialists." Do you honestly believe that, just because you're not on the dole, you're not making use of social services? Get real!

It's really not necessary to spew invective at those nasty Democrats anymore, folks. We all get it. You hate them, you hate the President, you hate Pelosi, you hate us (and you probably aren't too fond of yourselves, either, truth be told).

I'm still waiting for a single Republican to put forth a single proposal to actually resolve a single one of the myriad issues for which you never tire of blaming us. In my own state, Dino Rossi failed to manage that, and you all know what happened to him.

Is this asking too much of those who claim they are qualified to govern our nation? I hope not.

Acoustic, I get tired of seeing the same cheerleading and name calling from either side. Both sides are to blame for the deficit and the interest our children and grandchildren will inherit.

The answer to the deficit is simple but painful - cut spending. This is what everyday Americans have to do unless they rack up credit card debt until bankruptcy. Go after the biggest spending programs. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Military.

          1. If Social Security were managed properly, everyone would get out what they put in + interest. But it's not managed properly. The government can't run most things properly because they always have more tax money to fall back on. So what do we do? Cut a check to all Americans that have contributed (or their beneficiaries) and let them either invest the money themselves or opt into a new Social Security Trust Fund that is managed properly.

          2. Medicare is a huge issue and everyone in Congress knows it. Baby boomers and longer life expectancy will lead to more Medicare rationing (and the rationing has started). HCR will mean even more cuts to Medicare ($455B in Medicare Advantage over the next 10 years). Maybe the solution is transfer Medicare funds that Americans have contributed into HSAs in preparation for HCR. Treat it like Social Security.

Some of the rationing has already been set up as part of the stimulus bill (not HCR). There was about $1.1B set aside to create two healthcare rationing boards. I'll need to find the page number in the bill. One board will weigh the cost of treatment against the number of years of benefit from the treatment. The other will dictate exact steps doctors must take with their patients for a given condition. If someone can help with the page number of the stimulus bill, it would be appreciated. I'm ok with the 1st board since insurance companies do this today. The 2nd board is a little scary.

          3. Medicaid will expand greatly with HCR. I'm all for opening up Medicaid for more preventative care. I'm not sure how much can really be cut in this program without judging our level of humanity. People deserve basic care and basic preventative measures regardless of income. Maybe the only thing to do here is to be more aggressive against fraud and mismanagement of funds.

          4. The solution to military spending is stop being the world police unless the world is willing to foot the bill. The other side of spending includes more foreign intelligence to track the real threats against US citizens. We also need to maintain intelligence efforts on US soil without stepping on a citizen's right to privacy. I'm ok with surveillence cameras flooding public locations like the UK, monitoring public phones, public wireless hubs, etc. I'm ok with extending surveillence to private phones and private networks if it is justified.

The rest of the spending is small compared to the Big Four. But money in other areas can still be managed better, fraud in other areas can still be aggressively pursued. Earmarks can be eliminated. Lobbyists can be thrown out.

So there you go, Acoustic. Several solutions to one of the biggest problems in this country. Are there any fiscal conservatives in Congress in either party?

You are not living in the real world. You would rather live a lie than believe the truth. President Obama bent over backwards to get the Republicans a chance at imput in all 200 laws that Obama adm. passed. Instead the Pasrty of no, did just that, sit like a dump on a log, draw a big fat paycheck and just say no.

McCain will never get over the fact that he was the first whiteman a loose to a blackman for the office of Prersident. And Mitch McConnell cannot sleep at night knowing that a young black sernator is president and not him. And Bonehead, is just that, a bonehead.

if any of you who have a serious solution to what is going on then put your azz in position to run for office. You sit there and complain about Pelosi and Obama and how they have driven this country into the ground, i say you're all cowards! Is this part of your hand me down lesson's on Politics 101 that you've been taught and are teaching your children and so forth? YOU can blame Santa Clause for the deficit and it will always return to it's the Dem's fault they had control of the spending but yet they worked hand in hand with repubs from 06 to 08 the last two yrs of a Repub president .When the economy started it's down fall and the POTUS didn't even flinch at or adhere to any advice he was given and I'm pretty damn sure he saw and knew where this country was heading. If not then why was he so absent and quite about almost everything towards the end? Wasn't he still the POTUS until Jan. of 08 but people of the repub base can't seem to remember that> Whether Bohner uses commercial or not to fly he as SOH will spend tax payers money because he as well as them all are elected officials voted in by the people for the people. So stop your brutal hatred and get down on your knees and pray that they all find common ground to get this country back on track. But that's just wishful thinking cause like the repub lord and savior limbaugh said "I hope the POTUS fails " Do you feel the same for the POTUS and the country?

I can see her now with that cemented face...(eyes permanently bucked and dripping tears, forehead pulled so tight that her hairline starts in the middle of her head and then you move down to her neck that actually look like a 70 yr old).

She is about as phony as a 3 dollar bill.

That's the problem, Lynn - there is no flip side.

From the day the 2008 election ended, the Republicans have shown no interest in doing anything but blocking or repealing every initiative President Obama attempted, from the hated Stimulus, which added over three million new jobs to the economy, to the dreaded "socialist" health care reform, which finally gave millions of Americans an option other than choosing between food and medicine.

You say, "Prove your statement," and then immediately state that "there is no proof." I beg to differ. Look at the economics, the job creation statistics, the distribution of health care expenditure, the number of new small business startups. All of those are up, proof that doing something was better than doing nothing (as if that needed to be proven).

The burden of proof is on you, Lynn. What evidence do you have that the Republicans proposed anything at all over the last two years? Until now, they have been much more concerned with destroying the Obama Presidency and condemning the work that others were doing, then they have been about doing any actual work themselves.

Time to put up, or shut up. You own half the problem now, Lynn. Let's see what you do with it.

There is no flip side. Anything the Republican's would of done would of just fallen on deaf ears. The Dems won control of the House, Senate, and White House and they were determined to do it their way. When they took office and declared that they would be the most transparent and ethical congress in history, I actually had an inkling of of hope that they would hold true to that... sadly they didn't. There were far to many late night and weekend sessions behind closed doors and to many back room deals to claim ethics or transparency. When the Republicans tried to hold Nancy accountable to her word that there would be no more deficit spending(2007 inaugural address) they were labeled as the "party of no." All the Dems had to do was find a way to cut money elsewhere in order to extend unemployment benefits. Yet they blamed the obstructionist republicans (which in all honesty in their diluted strength is the only thing they could do). What a joke. Heaven forbid anybody in government actually adhere to the rules they set for themselves.

the republicans have been left out of the loop. remember when obama said, "we won, you lost." he, and pelosi had effectively removed bi-partisianship from the house and the senate. by themselves. the dem's brought this about.

now they want to pretend they are all for bi-partisianship in congress. of course you cant see that. get an updated prescription for your glasses there my friend.

I feel differently about the American public. I think they are well informed and rely on alternate points of view before reaching conclusions.

I have listened/watched Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS and NBC commentators and I am fully aware of what I am getting. I know they all have different perspectives and different idealogies. But I believe that there is nothing special about me. I think I am not the only one who takes the time to listen and learn.

True that the 111th was one of the most productive in U.S. history, however, because Pelosi is symbolic of public vitrol, she should go down with the ship the way the rest of the moderate dems did when they sacrificed their jobs for the greater good. She survived and had a great run (and I respect Pelosi) but like anyone who has had a taste of power and then has it taken from them by the people who gave it to them in the first place, it usually is very difficult to pry it from their hands. That's a bad sign when your mantra is "rebuilding" and your platform is "the greater good".

Can't you remember Ol' Obama telling them not to worry, that he had "their back"??? When in reality he had nothing. He would condemn the congressmen to losing just by campaigning for them. Look at one term Dina Titus from Nevada. She voted for the Health care fiasco. No discussion, no talking with the constituents, just follow the party line. She's gone. And good riddance. All of the US belongs to We The People! The folks in DC are our SERVANTS and NOT our Masters! Any there who agrandize themselves with lavish salaries, life styles and private jets need a wake up call and to be removed from their position of influnce and service. The money you earn is your's and not theirs to spend for their cronies and pet projects.

I am afraid that almost all of our elected officials have lost this concept.

The problem comes when you give an additional tax cut to the wealthiest 2 percent that will heap $700 billion in debt onto our children and our grandchildren.

I just don't get it. We're in a world of hurt when letting people keep as much of their earned income as possible is considered "heaping" debt onto our children and grandchildren. How about not spending as much? Naw...too simple.

The problem with your logic is that the past 30 years has been the time of so much debt being piled on that it's past time we began to pay it off. The time to have claimed that "it's my money, not the government's money to spend" should have been your mantra beginning back when Reagan was president. But Republicans were silent, the debt has grown to the point that now it's time to start paying it off again (like Clinton was beginning to do). (Remember, since 1980, we've had a Republican president 20 out of the past 30 years). So, if you weren't screaming about the growing debt the past 20 or 30 years (like some of us were), you aren't being honest about it now. We've allowed our debt to grow to such a number that the only way to get things under control is to face the fact that nobody wants to face, we all are going to have to sacrifice services and pay more taxes. Our children, grandchildren, and unborn future generations are not to blame for this, it's us - because we elected and re-elected the wrong people for office. It's not fair to be so selfish and leave it to them to worry about. There is a price to pay when we vote for the wrong people, even if they are in our chosen party. It's no different than when you max out your own personal credit cards - sooner or later you have to tighten your belt and pay them off. It's not fun, and those things you thought you couldn't live without suddenly aren't so wonderful.

Reducing taxes is the same as spending money we don't have. It results in the same deficit. The answer, bite the bullet, pay off the debt - then everyone can have lower taxes. And be more careful who you vote for in the future.

did you perhaps read post 6.5? seems an idea has been put forth due to 'questions' posed by acoustic therapy.

apparently a liberal with a functioning brain is more difficult to find than a liberal politician that truly cares for the public...

First things first... I am so glad Nasty Pelosi isn't going away!!!

Second, agreed that any party out of power that cannot pick-up seats with 10% unemployment should hang up the gloves.

Third, any party in power, along with the presidency and senate, which takes a 7.5% unemployment rate and increases it to 10%, should simply be hung.

Fourth, the leader of the party in power who loses the most seats in 60 years should simply be hung.

Fifth, the leader of the party in power who loses control of the majority of the state governorships, and state legislatures, in a redistricting year, should simply be hung.

Sixth, continuing the Bush tax rates isn't an increase, or decrease, in tax rates for anyone.

Seventh, what the nation cannot afford is two more years of one party rule... especially if that party is economically illiterate.

Eighth, with Nasty Pelosi, Scary Reid and Barry Soetoro still leading the Democrats the Republicans just have to show up to have another great election year in 2012.

Are you really telling us that Boehner, McConnell, Rand, DeMint et al are better? Really!?

What have they said that is positive? That is in any way an invitation to work to get the country back on track? That in any way is coming from a position of reason? Or compassion?

                                Get real!

You bet they are!!! No contest... not even close... a car full of clowns has more intelligence, character, common sense and intrinsic value that the entire Democrate congressional delegation!!!

Yeah, right, Martha. You, no doubt are another mind-numb FOX News (un)educated sap. I can tell by all those creative names you gave to all those Democrats you love to hate. You no doubt got them from someone like Billo the clown O'Reilly, "slant head" Hannity, or Tokyo Rose Limbaugh. And you think "tan man" Boehner is going to be any better at his job than Pelosi? Boehner wouldn't know the middle class if it slapped him in his face.

Barney Frank is my favorite. I can't stop laughing just looking at him. And when he starts to talk, I have this instant image of Elmer fudd Hunting Buggs Bunny. Great Entertainment. Can't make this up, it is much better cause it's real.
