Just 32% of Tea Party candidates win

AP

A Don't Tread On Me flag flies above protesters at a rally in April in Macon, MO.

From NBC's Alexandra Moe
For all the talk of the Tea Party's strength - and there will certainly be a significant number of their candidates in Congress - just 32% of all Tea Party candidates who ran for Congress won and 61.4% lost this election. A few races remain too close to call.

In the Senate, 10 candidates backed by the Tea Party ran and at least five were successful. (Race in Alaska has not yet been called.)

In the House, 130 Tea Party-backed candidates ran, and just 40 so far have won.

Identifying Tea Party candidates is undoubtedly inexact. Our criteria, generally, was to include anyone who has either been backed by a Tea Party group or has identified themselves as a member of the Tea Party movement. Toward the end of this cycle, however, seemingly every Republican was trying to associate themselves this way. One left off the list was Dino Rossi, despite Jim DeMint endorsing him, since Tea Party groups backed Clint Didier in the primary.

A note to correct the record: After about 20 hours of crunching numbers, one of us on your First Read authors looked up at 4 am and heard MSNBC use a much higher number. We went back and checked, and the numbers are much lower. Here's a full list:

Not one mention of the cost of the wars to the economy or the people. Ask the veterans and their fractured familes "Hows that war economy working for ya" You betcha. Sarah Palin showed how much she cares when she QUIT 2yrs into her term as Governor of Alaska. The DOLLAR BILL meant more to her than the Constitution or her civil obligations. As a combat veteran of Viet Nam, who volunteered and went to Viet Nam before I could even vote, I feel the Tea Party, the Republicans and the Democrats have all abandoned the people.

32% is really really good. The headline sounds like it was written by a politically biased reporter trying to belittle this pretty amazing accomplishment by grass roots people who've had enough of their government spending their kids kids money. Let's listen to what they have to say instead of vilifying or discrediting the whole group.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the tea party was bankrolled by big money and big corporations. It may have started as a grass roots organization, but the people who got elected last night took money, and they will have to repay the favors they received--just like any other candidate. Don't believe it? Check out the sites below.

Sorry, you'll have to supply references other than the New Yorker, the New York Times, The Week and NPR. In your world these would be The Drudge Report, Fox News, The Michael Savage Show and The Heritage Foundation.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Dems all take corporate money, money from billionaires, special interest money, little people's money, union dues from working Americans.

45 congress members. If I'm the koch brothers - that's pretty good. All the millions they put into the tea party express and karl rove's front group has bought them almost 50 congressman. Sad part is once their idiot candidates start doing excalty what they said they are going to do they will be thrown out. But the koch brothers will have made few billion more so it will all work out in the end.

Just to be clear, tea party idiots; I mean candidates have said they: oppose minimum wage, want to privatize social security, end medicare and foodstamps, end the dept of energy and dept of education, outlaw abortion - (well how long should a rape victim be sent to prison for aborting her rapists baby?), end the EPA and FDA, privatize the VA and more ridiculous statements. Oh yeah they cant say how they are going to balance the budget either cause most of them are morons with no economic prowess.

Once they start doing these things, watch how fast dems have a supermajority again.

You hear the teabaggers they complain about govt spending. But they don't want anyone touching their SS or medicare. Those are the biggest domestic expenditures - so their chants of -- stop spending and don't touch my social security/medicare don't make sense. Especially when their candidates have said SS needs to be done away with because its unconstituitional. You teabagger can't have it both ways.

You have to be either a fool to vote for the same good ol boys from the nixon era and the bush terms with the same ideas and think the outcome will be different with 45 even crazier congressman. A fool, or insane.

I own my own corporation and as long as you guys keep putting these idiots in I'll keep making out like a bandit. As a CEO, I'm stunned by how dumb people in the lower tax brackets have to be to keep putting people in congress who are against the middle and lower classes best interests. Its ridiculous, but I should say thanks. It makes me more money and saves me a mint in taxes.

There is no such thing as a "tea bag candidate", so I don't even know what you're talking about. However, I will say you guys should just go ahead and keep this kind of talk up because it's doing nothing but energizing your opponents. See you in 2012.

            #62.3 - Wed Nov 3, 2010 7:19 PM EDT

I have no party. I despise both parties, but I'm amazed at how easily people are manipulated. I don't really care for our President and his weak policies but I know history and history says every president's party that loses a lot of seats in his first 2 yrs always gets reelected.

Now the good ol boys will have to actually do something instead of try and destroy the president. As soon as the nation sees they are doing the same things they did under bush - its just going to go back to the way it was the last 2 yrs. Dems will have a majority in 2012 and the white house.

              #62.4 - Wed Nov 3, 2010 7:28 PM EDT

I despise both parties, but I'm amazed at how easily people are manipulated.

You are presumably a "people" too, right? Are you so unique that you are somehow immune from this vast manipulation you describe? Most people think this way too.

history says every president's party that loses a lot of seats in his first 2 yrs always gets reelected.

              Not by 60+ seats.

As soon as the nation sees they are doing the same things they did under bush

This is deeply flawed thinking. Virtually nobody is defending Bush, and in fact most folks in the tea party see his "compassionate conservatism" and heaving spending as being only less flawed than the current administration because it didn't borrow $3 trillion in two years.

                #62.5 - Wed Nov 3, 2010 7:35 PM EDT

I do not get manipulated by politics. I could really care less. Let me explain.

I own a corporation, so whenever the good ol boys get in office I make a mint. Every 2 yrs, there are obvious economic questions that are asked by reporters to good ol boy candidates. Every year they dodge the questions because they know they have no rationale answers and somehow keep winning elections on fear and divisivesness.

They get people to vote against their own self interest. This is both stupid and amazing. In truth it takes an idiot to vote against your own self/family interests but every year millions of american who are middle class and poorvote for the good ol boys. Its ridiculous but it works for me. The good ol boys are protecting my money and assets and I don't even have to donate.

Here's a clue to all you teabaggers---If they cant explain how they would reduce the deficit or balance the budget before the election- don't act so suprised when they do what they want once in office.

Please tell me one thing of substance that the good ol boys has said they are going to do differently? Just one.

You do know that bush never paid for the wars right? They weren't in any of his budgets. Thats a fact. So once the new president did the correct thing and include them his budget was going to be busted immediately before he did anything. That's also a fact.

So stop with the borrowed 3 trillion dollars. Quick econ 101 class. No matter who came in- the budget was going to be screwed because of the shape bush left it in. You can't just snap your fingers and fix the largest economy in the world.

This reminds me of the Green Party that sprang from the Dem's a few cycles ago. It had a huge first year, and is pretty much a 1% party now, even lower than Lib's. I don't think the TP they can survive long term. They talk a lot about fiscal responsibility and conservatism, but they won't discuss any specifics about reforming Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid, which are the 3 big gorillas banging on the door. The first candidate to talk about taking that money from the old people will get booted very quickly. Getting elected isn't that difficult, making tough choices, and taking money from those favorite programs is much harder.

It's amazing, yet not surprising, that so many who disagree with the Tea Party play the race card.

'Oh, you just don't like Democrats because you don't like black people'. I heard a talk show host come out and say 'if you're against the Democratic party you don't like black people'. Seriously?!!? Guess what.... I wouldn't pi## on Nancy Peolosi or Harry Reed if they were on fire, and I think they qualify as white.

These people have my respect... they have the courage to do what they believe based on policy, regardless of race:

                          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GizNwzKo3n8&feature=player_embedded

If we don't agree on policy at least show me the respect I show you... I don't assume or say if you disagree with me, or Republicans, or Tea Party, or Libertarian you're racist and don't like white people.

It isn't about race, it's about policy, those who are the TRUE racists are the ones who keep throwing up the race card..... you can't win on policy argument, so you try to win on bigotry.

                          Yeah... way to go.

The tea party is the frankenstein monster of the Republican party. For years the Republican establishment convinced dimwitted Americans that they should despise their own government for anything from deficits to travelgate. When their own members saw that the Republican politicians were nothing but hypocrites of course it was bound to happen. Right-wing blowhards on AM radio and foxnews who were nothing more than entertainers found themselves leading a group of angry, mostly old, mostly white, completely uninformed rednecks so they ran with it. The monster then got an abnormal brain from the graveyard of Republican vice presidential candidates and became Frankenstein....turning on it's master and running amuck.

                          The fad will die.

And this small group of sad, degenerate and inferior monsters, mostly white, mostly old and completely uninformed STILL were able to stick it to you.

Now, was that the fault of the inferiors that happened? And doesn't it beg the question of who that really might be?

I think the fad died sometime between the stimulus and HCR.

Nobody "stuck it" to me Richard. What do you think the tea party will do with all of 30 (?) members in Congress? My bet?....They'll either become regular Republicans....or be gone in 2-6 years.

As for the new House? They'll do nothing about deficits...nothing about health care...nothing about "taking back" anything....they WILL try to cut taxes for the wealthy.....That's really all Republican law makers care about....I hope they fail in that regard.

Richard...I don't understand your middle sentence...it's just not good enough English.....I left out "uneducated" I guess.

Mid-term elections in the midst of an economic swampland. Genghis Khan could've gotten himself elected to Congress, running against a Democratic incumbent.

This is far beyond huge, it's closer to cataclysmic. In two years so many citizen have seen the horror of the version of "hope and change" spit upon us by the extremists. The outright and blatant lies of openness and transparency in hiding mandates of a an all-encompassing and all-knowing big brother. To remember as well that many of these were victorious against Republicans!!!!! The results of this election gives hope to Americans who honor the spirit of work, self-responsibility and faith of our founding fathers. We must shake the yoke of socialist slavery from our souls, exterminate the hopelessness of entitlement and reignite the principles of character of our country.

let's just see how much influence the TeaParty has with their GOP housemates. the TeaBag princess, Michelle Bachmann put her name in contention for the #3 slot in house leadership after Boehnor & Cantor. she wants to replace Pence who is stepping aside. let's just see how well Bachmann & her TeaBags are received by the good old boys club.

Hey, question, if I were to change parties right now from conservative to liberal, would that mean I'm automatically owed a whole bunch of things that I don't deserve?

That's almost 1/3 of all Tea Party Candidates - And in typical Liberal fashion, you make condescending comments. You don't get it

                                                      Obama didn't get it

                                                      The Democrats didn't get it

And if the new congress doesn't stop the madness, they'll be gone too.

None of these people had "Tea Party" next to their names. They had the word "Republican." Even the article said, "Identifying Tea Party candidates is undoubtedly inexact." We will never know how these people would have done if they were running as a third party against a Republican and a Democrat. My guess is that the tea party would not have done well running on its own.

If your people made sure there were not racist signs and comments coming from your rallies maybe most of the nation would not think you guys are racist. It takes more guts to police your rallies and stand up to the bigots than to point back at others who are appalled by the outlandish bigotry.

There is a reason teabaggers got 95% of their money from out of state. Their own voters would not give millions to such wacky idiots.

All those ads were not free, and no it wasn't fund raising by the grassroots that gave O'Donnell a half hour of air time two days before the election. Big money from people with an agenda paid for this election. The next two years will be interesting.
