Early Alaska results look good for Murkowski

From the NBC political team
We might be in for a long night -- or a long few weeks -- in the Alaska Senate race, but the early numbers are good ones for Republican write-in candidate Lisa Murkowski.

With about 58 percent of votes recorded, the "write in" option is leading with 39 percent of the vote, with Republican Joe Miller receiving 36 percent and Democrat Scott McAdams getting 25 percent.

If the write-in option wins or comes within one percent of the top vote-getter, the ballots will be individually evaluated to determine which names voters wrote in. That process could take weeks.

"We're not done yet," Murkowski told supporters in an upbeat address early Wednesday morning.

I like this. The people actually put in the effort to vote for their choice, not just to take one of the options given. I am from a different state and know nothing about the candidates, but Lisa Murkowski seems to be the popular choice so far.

Nicola you still don't get it. This is not about the tea party this was about shaking government by the throat which the tea paty did tonight. We have scared the hell of the Democrats and the Republicans and now we will be watching to see that they follow through because if they don't trust me we will clean out the Senate next and then the White House in 2012.

If the Tea Bagger in Nevada couldn't take out Harry Reid (quite possibly the most pathetic and unpopular Congressman this decade) and Palin's Pet Joe Miller couldn't beat a WRITE-IN candidate in the year of the big red wave, then the Tea Party isn't a force to be reckoned with, it's a whimper.

Good luck in 2012. This was a referendum on the economy and nothing else. Conservatives need to wake up to reality: America is a moderate country.

Hello? Have you been watching the returns? Reid defeated the nutcase in Nevada; McDonnell rode her broom off into the night; Meg Whitman's $150,000,000 didn't win her anything in California; Carly Fiorina just refused to call it a day even though she has clearly lost to Barbara Boxer; and Palin's endorsement doesn't seem to carry any weight where the voters know her best. The Republicans failed to take the Senate. Victory? Just wait 'till 2012. The Republicans will fail miserably to move forward popular legislation and will be roundly repudiated. Wait until they try to cut back on unemployment compensation. That will cost them a couple votes, even among the ignoranti.

How's that again? "We've lost this election, but, boy-howdy, the winners won't have a chance next time if they don't act like we want them to." Was this just a practice run to shake this things up a bit, as if Joe just let them off easy this time?

I agree with you NICOLA! Only the deaf, dumb or blind would see it much differently than that! And this includes those that are willfully so. There are those who are literally biting their teeth that some of the Tea Baggers got walloped! They are still clinging to the coattails of Mama Grizzly! Tonight, they were refudiated(sic). All this nonsense that this was not about the Tea Party is hogwash. News Flash. This was about the Tea Party, including Sarah Palin! Their bright stars barely flickered. 2012? The general public will have gotten wiser to the kookier philosophy that the Tea Baggers have and this time, they will only register a whimper! You could bet on that.

In the meanwhile, keep on praying!

As a middle "class" income person I find it a helpful in our job market especially here in Alaska where our jobs are linked to oil and other natural resources like gold etc. that make people rich to provide the resources to have to invest in people "like" me that work. Lisa can probably secure that and keep running smoothly unlike many states that have higher unemployment.

How is ensuring that oil and cruise industries don't contribute their fair share for using Alaskan resources laudible?? McAdams was the logical choice for a people that don't act like serfs. Instead, royalty prevailed. long live dynastic political families, long live the woman who did not 'quit'.

Reply to Rock 760945, Yes, she was INITIALLY appointed by her dad, someone I was not AT ALL a fan of. But, over the years, she has proven herself to be the kind of person I want to represent the state in which I live.

Hear me out for a second.

She is the person who reaches out to have an intellectual dialogue with ALL people, not just automatically close her ears and mind to compromise. In this day & age, most politicians DON'T listen to the other side. It's no wonder there are tons of people turned off to politics. I consider myself a moderate. I can't stand either extreme,ultra-liberal democrat or ultra-conservative republican. She seems to speak for people like me.

The late Senator Stevens was that way. His best friend was the democratic senator from Hawaii. They worked together to improve their respective states, both being the newest. They worked TOGETHER. Lisa seems to reflect that sense of cooperation, appealing to the middle where I personally think most Americans stand.

She went out of her way to prove that while appointed initially by her father, she is her own person, an intellegent person who will listen and invites the dialogue. She listened to her state when we told her, "Lisa, you HAVE to run." We are a Republican state and that has actually worked out well for our state. We are not a state that Sarah Palin has made us look like. Yes, she (Palin) is from Alaska, but we are NOT quitters, we are NOT close-minded, we are quite simply Alaskans who want to be respected, not laughed at and ridiculed.

Washington could use a lot more politicians like Lisa Murkowski, someone who will listen and do their best to represent their entire state, not just a certain sector. THIS is the kind of person I want to put Alaska on the map!

I would disown Palin too! She is a moron and a fraud. Her spotlight revolves around sht talk and empty rhetoric. Unfortunately in this country news is all about sensation these days and Octomom and Brittany Spears are headlines. There are definitely some things I am not proud of to be an American, and they revolve around embarrassments to our country from idiot sensations and the nitwits that support it.

This is a republic, and a democracy. If you had paid any attention in class, you would know this. The pledge of allegiance is simply a pledge of allegiance, not a founding document of our country.

Anyway Mr. Bush had eight years to ruin the country. The tripling of the deficit came from Bush's last budget (signed into law in 2008). Now Obama and the Democrats are cleaning up his mess. Despite all the efforts of the do-nothing Republicans, Obama has not only passed major legislation, but also restored honor to America both here and around the world.

That really burns you up doesn't it?

2009 - the government was squeezed on both sides of the budget ledger in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2009. Tax revenue fell by $420 billion, or 17 percent, to the lowest level in more than 50 years.

Individual income taxes, the biggest source of tax receipts, fell by 20 percent, the agency said. Corporate income taxes dropped by 54 percent, reflecting the slow economy.

At the same time, federal spending rose by 18 percent, the CBO said. About half of the spending increase, $245 billion, was driven by the costs of bailing out the financial industry and taking over mortgage financiers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The spending increases and tax cuts included in the economic stimulus package approved in February added almost $200 billion to the 2009 deficit, the CBO said.

Now move to 2010 - The Obama administration has announced that the annual federal deficit remained at a whopping $1.29 trillion during the fiscal year that ended October 1, just a fraction under 2009's record of $1.43 trillion.

Ironically, much of that "good news" had little to do with the Obama administration's own fiscal prudence or policies. The U.S. Treasury Department press release on the budget figures does claim credit for the slight decrease in deficit size from last year, but reading between the lines reveals that the decrease is simply the result of a Bush-era policy costing less than anticipated. “Due to careful stewardship of the emergency programs, their effect on the deficit was much smaller than previously estimated. The Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) had outlays of just $9.0 billion in FY 2010, which was $25.9 billion or 74 percent below previous estimates from July 2010,” the October 15 Treasury press release claimed.

for the dieerence, look here, http://www.1215.org/lawnotes/lawnotes/repvsdem.htm

bush only had control; through 2006 when the dems took control of congress and the last two budgets of Bush's term was created by the dems. Bush if you will remember sent them back several times before he finally signed them. We had a fairly good economy until 2006. Prior to that , the GOP tried to make changes in the banking regs and was blocked by the dems INCLUDING Obama. In fact it was Obama and ACORN that forced the banks to make the bad loans to poor people that brought the country down. You might want to argue that but if you take the time to research it, you find it is true!

That is so true, but she is the standard carrier for the Christian Nation folks, who are out of touch with reality for the most part and are her supporters. She is a top of the line Jerry Springer trailer parker. She is basically an embarrassment to this country. But in this country there is a freedom element, and you can be a jackass or an idiot and be all the sensation.

There will always be fringe freaks out there. The so called Christians out there trying to say that this country is a "Christian" nation, as opposed to a nation of freedom of religion need to be purged, or brought into this century. Until then we will always have snake oil salesmen telling them what they want to hear, and having a level of popularity.

Sad how John McCain sold out to these groups in an attempt to get elected in 2008. Just like the republican party sold out so save Rome. We are stuck with them until their kids children are educated enough to understand that most of what the espouse is the reason we have so many issues, including religious based wars. There will always be Glen Becks and Sarah Palins of some sort until people are educated.

There should be an intelligence test for all who would comment on politics, and a more stringent one on those who would vote. If that could then be followed with a common sense test and a strict law that the head must be engaged prior to commenting or voting (rather than feel good decisions made from the heart with no real concept of consequences), this country might have a chance of surviving without going through what the American colonists went through in the 1770s, the French went through in the 1790s and the Russians went through in the second decade of the 1900s. ET, ALF, Mork...somebody save us from ourselves.

Do any of you seriously believe that 40% of them will have a write in candidate? This race will not be decided tonight or even next week.

Did she quit on him also. Sarah is a quitter who really did Alaska a good deed by Quitting! Gov. Sean Parnell is 10x the governor that she could have ever thought of being.  But then the call of Money became more important to her and of course hearing herself speak the words of her speech writers.  The Elected officials in Washington need to Put the American People first instead of fighting all the time..For the good of the People. Yet another ignorant koolaid drinker, spouting off about the issues of a state he knows squat about. In fact, that's what you do to provide comments isn't it? Squat. Well, you clearly do not have a grasp on what each canidate has to offer (or intention to destroy) so keep it to yourself.

WHO ARE YOU?!?! All you do is talk smack to the people who don't live here. WHO CARES?!?! They have an opinion and I personally think it's GREAT that the rest of the country sees we are not ALL like Sarah Palin. Get off your high horse! You are no more special than anyone else so stop acting like your hero, Ms. Palin. It's embarrasing, speaking as a fellow Alaskan.

About this election. It is far from over. Joe (isn't it funny how Ms. Palin is surrounded by JOES? Joe the plumber, Joe six-pack, Joe Miller... Hmmm...) is calling in some Tea Party paid lawyers to watch the counting of the write-ins. We MAY know who officially won in a month. If we're lucky.

But rest assured, Lisa will be declared the winner and Joe the winer, weiner, you choose. Either way, he will remain a LOSER!

                                            @Thomas-AK

You call Joe Miller a loser, winer, weiner etc.. Spoken like a LIBERAL there Thomas. Do you even know what Joe Miller stands for Thomas? Just because you are an Alaskan you think this grants you some kind of magic to know a candidate better than those who live in other states? How many talks by Joe Miller have YOU listened to? I listened to nearly all of his appearances. How much do you KNOW about Joe? I know plenty! I live in Connecticut, as far as you can get nearly from AK. And your comments indicate that you know NOTHING about him. You are the one whom you despise, not Joe Miller...

You are a sad example of Alaskan...

Oooh, Ron Spectre, I struck a nerve with you! I am a MODERATE, not a liberal. I don't support hypocrites like Joe Miller. I vote the person who best supports my belief, as do you and everyone else. No, I do not think because I am an Alaskan I possess magic to know a candidate better than you. He stands for YOUR belief system, not mine. I have done my research on Mr. Miller and he's just not my cup of tea. Lisa represents MY beliefs. I am sorry you feel I am a sad example of being an Alaskan. And, quite honestly, I do not despise myself. I am a proud Alaskan and will stand behind what I feel is right for me. Your opinion of me does not matter to me, like mine of you should not matter to you.

And isn't Connecticut one of the more LIBERAL states? Should I respond likewise to you?

Sarah and her fanatical, religious zealots and wannabe militia Tea Baggers are very, very scary. This is shades of the Joe McCarthy era. Sarah is a very vindictive and shallow person.

The Tea Party group is unprofessional and uneducated bullies who spread lies and fears. They must be so proud to be such an example to our young folks (and you wonder why there is a bully problem in the schools??? Just listen to the adults in this election season. UGH!) Sarah will have a lot of explaining to do if she pursues the 2012 presidential run. Not only why did she quit, but she has a lot of ugly skeletons in her closet she will need to explain to the masses.

Her personal choice of Joe Miller was a joke. Here is a fairly good looking man, well educated, who every time he opens his mouth he gets his foot stuck in it. He is an amateur extremist. Is that what our country is heading for - a renegade group of religious extremists running our country???

I believe you will find the majority of the country is fiscal conservative and social liberals. Stay out of my wallet and keep out of my life. Make people be responsible for their actions.

And now I am done sharing my personal views from Alaska. Have a good evening!

You Democrats just don't get it, and apparently never will if tonight hasn't proven anything to you. America as a whole will not stand for liberal socialist policies. You can't blame Republicans for handing the Democrat Party car keys to Obama, Pelosi, Reed, and Howard Dean and letting drive off a cliff. America tolerated Bill Clinton because he was relatively moderate, especially in comparison with the before mentioned liberal disasters.

The Republican Party had strayed away from the conservative base and that is where the Tea Party came from. The Tea Party isn't trying to become a 3rd Party, and never was. It was created out of necessity and frustration by people who care want to steer the Republican Party back toward the conservative principles and ideals. The Tea Party supported conservative Republicans in the primary elections, thus ensuring that the right kind of Republicans were sent to Washington.

For anyone to say that the Tea Party has failed is just a delusional opinion, because conservative Republicans won nationwide in historic numbers. The Republican Party has been strengthened and transformed and it's due, in most part, to the grass roots actions of the Tea Party.

You are wrong if you see the Tea Party as a separate political party. "Tea Party" is just a name they gave to themselves for a grass roots movement within the Republican Party. "Tea Party" is just a play on words referring to "The Boston Tea Party", which was also an action or movement, not a political party. Another way to explain what the Tea Party is would be to think of them as the polar opposite of MoveOn.org. Just like MoveOn.org influenced the transition of the Democrat Party to liberalism and socialism, the Tea Party has influenced the Republican Party transition toward true conservatism.

The liberal media outlets have tried their hardest to paint the Tea Party as a bunch of nut jobs, but nothing could be further from the truth. They are regular everyday people who just happen to love this country and want to do their part to ensure "that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth" - to borrow a few lines from President Lincoln.

Only time will tell if this Tea Party movement will have better results than the one MoveOn.org produced. It would be impossible to be any worse, that much we know for certain. History has proven more than once that conservative ideas like eliminating wasteful spending, a balanced budget, tax cuts for everyone who pays them, rewarding job producers and not punishing them for working hard and becoming successful, etc.. Common sense conservative solutions have worked throughout history from ancient times to the present. There's no doubt that conservative solutions and ideas will work in our present crisis too. Obama's goose is already cooked with little or no chance of redemption, but hopefully his replacement will want to work with the new Congress and Senate conservatives.

It is so much bigger than that. That is why things need to come to the center. Both conservatism or liberalism are not an answer in this country. Greed and power will corrupt all if there are not checks and balances.

The TEA party is "primarily" the same social conservatives that the republican party sold out to years ago. Same group, different banner. They are given way more credit than they deserve and by puttting forth nuts like Angle, etc they ruined any chance of the GOP getting the senate. The shake up in the election had little to do with that "movement" as it did with general dissatisfaction with the status quo.

I find it ironic that NBC pretty much made fun of the fact that Lisa was running a write in campaign when they interviewed her on the today show.

You said this of the Jerk in the White House: Despite all the efforts of the do-nothing Republicans, Obama has not only passed major legislation, but also restored honor to America both here and around the world.

What President are YOU seeing that the rest of the world doesnt?

What country do YOU live in???

WHAT honor!??! He has run around the world apologizing for our greatness. He is a member of the Hate America First crowd, which obviously, YOU are a founding member of as well...

This Rebound Girfriend of a President, this Accidental President, is destroying this country by flouting the founding principles of our nation and trying to ram his own Socialist Chavez like agenda through. He insults our allies and embraces our enemies.

This idiot needs a good swift kick in the back side. Joel I assume you are an as yet empty-headed college student who has zero experience in the real world. That is the only thing that explains your inane comments. So, when you finally get out of college and get into the real world you will see how it really works when Mommy and Daddy arent there to take care of the hard parts for you...

I wonder how many write-in votes there are for Palin? 160 names on the list, could be that write-in wins, but murkowski does not, and Miller gets by default.

Incumbents normally win, some crazy percentage like 90%, so that 32% is not relly that bad of a percentage, it shows the discontent that the voters had with the Democrats, and the amount of Tea Party Candidates sends a message to the Republicans.

Democrats got shellaced, and wait until redistricting id done, 2012 will finish the beat down.
