Democrats now almost assured to keep Senate control

From the NBC political team
As of 12 a.m. ET, with the projected win of Democratic incumbent Daniel Inouye in Hawaii, Democrats now have control of 48 seats in the Senate.

Two independents — Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut — caucus with Democrats.

That means Democrats have effectively retained control of the U.S. Senate unless Republicans are able to bring any moderate Democrats or independents into their caucus.

Republicans have picked up four Senate seats so far tonight. They would have needed to net 10 seats to achieve a majority in the Senate.

There are still tight races to be called in Colorado, Illinois and Nevada that will affect the final count as well.

Too bad about the Senate ending up with a slight Democrat majority.  My slogan: "Let's Finish the Job!  Ruin America! Vote Republican!"

we have to make sure that we elected the right kind of democrats, the only silver lining in this election is that the blue dogs are almost all gone, now all we have to do is change more states even bluer in the house like texas next time

what happend to this massive 'landslide" and the baggers and repubs "taking back what is ours"?

seems when the day started dems had

              1. White House

              2. Senate

              3. House

the day ends the dems have:

              1. White House

              2. Senate

my math says the repubs with all their bluster are still the minority....and the baggers who were going to "take control" - remain the minority of the minority.

Pull those old tshirts out from 2006 repubs - change the year now from "Wait until 2008...and cross out the "Wait Until 2010"....to "Wait until 2012"....and make sure you do it in erasable ink to so you can change it to read "Wait until 2016"!

What changed is that the progressives and libs can no longer do any damage to this country. Nothing will get done until we get BHO out in 2012. After that, real change comes to America. It is refreshing though, that the jack boot of the left on the back of my neck has eased up some!

you had this massive wave of discontent and you couldn't even get the dems out of the senate...

same old republican rhetoric - "wait until next time"....you should all be wearing CUBS hats....or buy tshirts now that say "Wait until 2016"!.

and nice of you to at least admit that even with large numbers of repbublicans being elected - that "nothing will get done"....that is at least an honest republican statement!

You are an idiot, and I have a personal rule against arguing with idiots, so this will be my only response.

                    1. I am not republican.

                    2. Did you really expect this to happen in 1 election? The dems didn't take over in 1 election, it was spread out over several. The same will occur here.

                    3. American's got a taste of extreme liberalism, they spit it out. Deal with it. BHO and the extreme left that were running things are done. Hopefully, this puts an end to the progressive movement once and for all. At least then BHO will be remembered for doing something usefull.

please - americans also got a taste of conservatives in power during the previous administration - wait a couple months of in action by the latest group - the taste will be back in the throats...

and check your history Mr....the dems took over control of both the house and senate in one election cycle - it was 2006!

The GOP is on a strict probation period for the next two years. If they want to continue to gain control or the presidency they will have to 1. Stop Obama care 2. Make the Bush tax cuts permanent or at least extend them 3. Stop the taxation of insurance benefits. If they fail to do these things they will once again be voted out.

Anyone who thinks that this is not a defeat for President Obama and liberal ideology is deceiving themselves. Numerous incumbents have been defeated, a difficult task at anytime. They have been replaced by a number of individuals branded far right by the left; indeed the majority in this country have finally paid attention and have spoken. This will stop the Obama agenda and put many moderate to left-leaning Republicans on notice. Had more senators been up for reelection, you would see a Republican senate as well.

try a civics leason - a third of the senators are up for reelection every two years....

how many more needed to be up for reelection - you didn't even toss out Reid - you know - your number 1 target!

here's a thought - If ever republican senate candidate would have been a bagger the dems would control the senate with 70 votes.

                                Hey b dune,

Try a math lesson, 37 seats out of 100 is more than a third. No one was suggesting that more than roughly a third of the seats are typically up for reelection. Rather, that if someone like Dick Durbin or Tom Harkin were up for reelection-- he would have cause for worry. Based on your mathematical skill, you must be the product of an underperforming school system. It is no wonder you are a raving leftist. I hate to break it to you, but the reeducation camps offered by socialists are not to make up for educational shortcomings of primary education.

you know nothing math wizard - is 37% close enough to 33% to you? I think so

no other way to retaliate so you lame azz pick over what any normal person understands in general terms that a "third" of the senate is up for reelection each year...

and "mentor" - didn't you quote "roughly a third".....couldn't you have been more specific? How does my "third" differentiate from your "roughly a third"?

I'll assume you were homeschooled and only debated yourself.

that's the best you got? try this on math boy - add it up how ever you want - be specific on percentages - how do you say "minority"?....that's what you on the right still are - the minority...someone else besides the GOP leadership will let you know where to pick up the keys to the potty.

I agree, a danger exists if they allow neocons to take control of their caucus. A return to the neocon era of Bush and Cheney would be devastating for this country. Hopefully, the learned a lesson and get back to their real roots. Cuts in spending and taxes are what they need to focus on. Repealing obamacare is out of the question, that will never happen with BHO in there for less than a 2/3 majority in the senate. Obamacare is something we are going to have to suffer with for a long, long time.

Don't let my name full you, I dislike neocons as much as I dislike liberals.

And this occurs AFTER Nevada has the worst unemployment rate in the country and AFTER Dems are accused of "voting irregularities" shortly after the polls opened in Nevada?

here's what they want - they want jobs - your plan of "doing nothing" and bragging about what you can stop won't cut the cheese this time.

who has the pressure? the GOP - too bad you made promises you won't be able to keep

                                                                1. repeal healtcare

                                                                2. create tax cuts for the rich

                                                                3. control the borders (you had 8 years and failed at that)

                                                                4. create new jobs - not two years from now - not 4 years from now - now (right now)!

good luck - the clock is ticking - you gave Obama one week to see results - you'll have less time then that.

The House Class of 2011 - The Repblican Party who could do nothing!

Why do people argue about politics? We Americans have dealt with elections sine 1788! Over time we have witnessed the balance of power shift back & forth, due to empty promises made by both parties! We gave Bush 8 yrs, & got nothing in return, a war built on lies, corruption with Halliburton, 911, etc. Yet after only 2 yrs we condemn Obama! In two yrs, he cannot fix what took 8 yrs to destroy! Come on people! Be real with yourself! THE ROOT of it is RACISM! I don't agree with every decision made by Obama! Nevertheless, give the man a chance! YOU GAVE BUSH 8 yrs AND WHAT DID WE GET FROM IT? NOTHING!

Bush 8 years and nothing but a failed war. Obama less than two years and already over 1.5 trillion, that's trillion with 12 zeros, and unemployment at of near 10% with no sign of improvement. Policies that are failing miserably and not a clue of how to fix anything. We can't afford to give him and his merry band of idiots 8 years.

As for the racism remark. I guess that is always a fail safe comment for someone to bail out on.

By the way the Obamas all wish to thank the taxpayers in advance for their over 2 billion dollar vacation they and over 3000 are taking to India. That's right over 3000. They have reserved the entire Taj Mahal.(excuse the spelling) I hope they enjoy since the common folks are lucky to even afford a weekend get away.
