President Obama speaks to Pelosi, Boehner

President Barack Obama makes an election night phone call to Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) from his Treaty Room office in the White House residence, Nov. 2, 2010.

NBC's Savannah Guthrie reports that President Obama has reached out to both soon-to-be former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and likely soon-to-be Speaker John Boehner.

NBC's Chuck Todd has the following read-out of the president's conversation with Boehner, per Boehner's office:

President Obama called Leader Boehner at midnight to congratulate him. They had a brief but pleasant conversation. Leader Boehner said he’s always been straightforward and honest with the president in the past, and said that’s the way he’ll continue to be with the president in the future. They discussed working together to focus on the top priorities of the American people, which Boehner has identified as creating jobs and cutting spending. "That's what they expect," Boehner said. He thanked the president for the call.

Do you think the writer refused to capitalize "the President" or simply forgot to do so?

It was probably an error. It is pretty confusing. The rule is to use a capital when talking about the President of the United States, but not the president of other countries. You can find errors in journalists work very often now-a-days.

See, I told you the new speaker' telephone number wasn't unlisted. Obama just never knew how to dial it before.

Pelosi proved right up to the end that she had no idea what America wanted. Her prediction that the democrats would hold the House was about as correct as her statement that America would love health care once it was passed. Enjoy flying commercial and your new office somewhere in the bowels of the House.

I think it only has to be capitalized when followed by the last name of the president. Otherwise it is just a common noun.

The word "president" is capitalized only when it's used as a common noun.

This writer is correct. The president of the United States is President Obama.

The word "president" is capitalized when it is used as a PROPER noun, or when it takes the place of the President's name. So if it refers to the President of the United States (the office, or the person) it is should be capitalized.

The President of the United States is President Obama. The President called ......

      #1.5 - Wed Nov 3, 2010 8:02 AM EDT

From what I see in other MSNBC and NBC News stories, they don't seem to capitalize "president" in the sense that it is used above. The also don't capitalized "leader" "speaker" or "governor" as a title unless it refers to the office itself; for example, another article mentions "House speaker" with "speaker" not capitalized, but "House" capitalized.

Every organization sets its own rules for how to punctuate and capitalize; many use AP standards, but there is no official English language board to say that one thing or the other is definitively correct.

If capitalizing his title is the biggest worry Obama's supporters have after the shellacking Obama's Democrats took last night, I think the Republicans will do just fine in 2012.

We would all know the answer to that, if they spent what they do for defense on education. But if everyone is educated, then they wouldn't have fears that the abortion boogeyman was going to get them.

THANK YOU for taking the House back from the spend happy Democrats and Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi still has her day job but she is NO LONGER SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE.

THANK YOU AMERICA FOR MAKING MY DAY. I have hope now.

Apparently you missed style and grammar lessons. There are accepted standards.

I think that reporters today are super lazy, don't know how to spell and don't know how to edit.

The problem stems from texting which really does not help one's communications skills.

That's easy when all you have to say is No, No, No, No, No, No.... let's see what Boehner can do to actually get something done (besides being a bagman for special interests - he's good at that...) instead of just being a permanent roadblock.

Well at least they're civil at the opening bell. It's probably a pipe-dream, but I'd like to see that civility carried on to a co-operative legislative/executive season. Where I see the republican approach to the financial situation failing is the lack of cohesion of purpose with big business interests. Where the GOP is pushing the idea that supporting the wealthy and big-business will provide jobs for Americans; Big-Business would rather use that support to bolster their investor profit level and authorize huge bonuses for their top executives.

SJD, it's going to be easy in the first couple of weeks for the Majority to get things done. Extension of the tax rates, spending cuts and repeal of health care will be the first things on the agenda, and guess what, if the boys and girls in the senate don't go along and play ball, we have a new Party of NO and they will be on their way out in two years.

The fact that they are taking on discretionary spending, (earmarks) means Reid and Boxer are in real trouble. No more high speed train from LA to Las Vegas, no more research for brown mice, or grasshoppers in Utah.

Today the Congress in two years the White House! Obama will definitely be in the History Books, the worst president of the United States! And for all of you that want to think I'm a racist, don't forget, he has as much white in him as black! I personally would have voted for Condolessa Rice or even former Colin Powell.

Mr. Obama had neither the experience nor the intelligence to be the president it just shows that there are too many people who don't have the common sense to be allowed to vote!

We have at least tied his hands, so he can't do any more damnage to the extent he already has done and if we can't change some of the damages that has been done, then we can wait until the new president takes over in 2013 and repeal that awful HealthCare bill!

Okay it is what it is! As far as the military is concerned those of you that haven't served on the front lines have no way of knowing what these soldiers actually go threw! Again I speak from experience! Equipment is of great importance to operation of the mission. with out that did it ever occur to you that lives are loss ed because of that. And you guy's say start with the military???? You might start with obama wife and their fair tail which I might say is soon coming to the end with their elaborate spending with the white house and oh not to mention trips that they take that have nothing to do with the government.Oh and the 1st dog and the lust keeps going on. So want to yell at the military next time you look outside and are setting on the bench some where remember you are able to do so because some paid a price for you to do that. I will say one more thing '''' I have always thought that the American people need to clean up their own back yard before they try to clean up someone Else's.

Sorry 1sgt's wife, I've served in the military and they waste money like THEY own the printing presses. Why don't you ask your hubby about the Bradley fighting tank, or the marines about that hybrid helicopter/ airplane thing that likes crashing. I remember putting on a "show of force" at Ft. Benning, GA back in the early 90's, there was the 197th w/ the Abrams tank, the Apache helicopters and A-10's that were flown in from Eglin AFB in Fla. I remember having to drive some "suits" around the post, answering questions, showing our new toys off. Total cost for the day was estimated at 15 million for costs of equipment, munitions, fuels and feeding everyone. Because the suits were in, they fed us very well, better than normal. I say close all bases in other countries, bring our troops home, we have plenty of area to train and hold our lands.

Ruby, discretionary spending will be the first things that will be cut. They will go through the "stimulus" bill and remove all those special little projects that don't do jack for the country but benefit only union bosses or a very select group of people. Subsidies to states like California and Nevada will be reduced, if you are not going to make an effort to improve, then there is no reason why the other states should bail your butt out again and again and again, especially in a recession caused by over spending.

Seniors have less to fear from republicans then they do from the progressives.

I agree with Lotsoffish & the other comments, God (all higher powers) help us all! Obama is so on the right track to fix healthcare spending to save money in the long run! Our population is growing using medicare & support for that system must be fixed; if we were to include alternative care as a first defense we would save soooo much money! My individual observation has seen much waste & worsening in friends & family health situations when the AMA protocol is used primarily - why not use chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, energy healing (other CAM) along side or before surgery & drugs?

People please know that insurance & the pharmaceutical companies spend alot of money to maintain rising profits & declining positive results while negating benefits of a healthier & less costly alternative because they are a "for profit business" not a means to a healthier nation. Please, also become aware of the division of the NIH -National Institute of Health that has much research on CAM practice, demand from your physician alternative choices in your health care, read this website, become familiar like you are with the drug ads on tv!

Bail out these huge companies so the ceo can go on vacations. Great Job, Dems, now out the door you go. You fouled up the usa. I will vote obama out of office in two years, if i had my way. Look at canada's government control healthcare system, that is what obama is doing to us! He should have went to the top end of insurances, the ones with the multimillion dollars profits! not the bottom end. Man the insurance companies gotta love him for that! more money in their pockets and how do you think we the people can afford that? government will get out the debt by all the fines from not having insurance that we can't afford. go figure

As an 80 yrs. woman who worked to the bone for over 40 years, and then some, I must say that health care for everyone is a must... there is no reason why anyone should not get the best health care. The Repugs. answer to the care in emergency rooms is more expensive than if we had universal health care... the burden on the finances of emergency rooms would be drastically reduced...and, we would have a more healthy population...

And what about corporate welfare? Any one thinks about it???

Magdelana, sorry to disagree as I respect that as a senior you probably have a lot of practical experience and knowledge, however getting up in years myself, I don't see where universal health care would work, at least not in present times. Firstly, the drain on our healthcare system by illegal immigrants is huge. I wouldn't even fathom a guess at how much they actually cost working Americans to provide them healthcare. Secondly, there are thousands, probably millions of people who make a conscious choice NOT to work for a living, therefore receiving free handouts including free medical care. Thirdly, take a look at other countries that have gone to government healthcare. While to some degree it's working in some countries, in many the expense is nearly bankrupting them.

So what's the answer? In my opinion, tort reform, discontinuing medical care for illegals and deporting them. Allowing greater competition by the insurance providers across state lines. Addressing the millions of dollars spend on paperwork within the medical industry and getting them to embrace the computer age for storing and sharing medical information within the industry. Actually there are a number of initiatives that, if pursued, would have a great impact on reducing the cost of healthcare.
Additionally, health insurance companies need to be more closely regulated. While I don't like big government, having oversight to the insurance companies would be a necessary evil.

The Bush Administration did a study on tort reform, they came to the conclusion that it would save less than 1% on healthcare overall. It is a must, but not a solution.

Jerry, I think you are crossing the border between Iraq and Afghanistan. The 30,000 went to Afghanistan at the generals' requests to bolster the fighting forces preparatory to the southern offensive. As I recall the count in Iraq is down to 50,000 from over 130,000. My figures are just approximates as I watch the overall effect of the war and not the amounts.

Give them what they need to do their jobs is a good motto. As I recall, Obama was opposed to the increase until his field commanders convinced him of the need and then he went ahead and did what was needed.

California deserves what it gets. The liberal state is bankrupt because they don't understand that services must be paid for and that the US government will no longer bankroll the "give away" state. Act like you want to become part of the United States, enforce the laws of the federal government, do away with sanctuary cities, and drop the attitude that you are special and are entitled.

TJM07 is right - California made its bed and now let it wallow in it. The insane and inane tripe that has been coming out of California for the last half century has not just wrecked the state but weakened the United States both economically and socially. Except for a few pockets of sanity that were overwhelmed by the rabble, California has operated like a third grade civics class run amuk with paper airplanes and spitballs flying and that is why the state is now like a third world country.

Hmm the one I heard saying that HE would create jobs is Obama! First help the smaller businesses! help them, they then can employ more people. Put more burdens on them they have to let people go. These huge companies are taking over the smaller companies! They put little ones out of business and take their employees so i guess you call that jobs

                                      #7.4 - Wed Nov 3, 2010 7:35 AM EDT

Lucie please! Unless there is demand for their products, no business is hiring! No one is going to give you a job to sit on your backside and look pretty just because they got a tax break or other "government welfare". Only demand creates jobs. Also, I'm sure you do not want the government regulatingthe big businesses that you accuse of taking over small business right? Surely you voted for government, less government interference and regulation, right? It's now every man/woman for themselves and greed may end up ruling the day. I got mine and will not be sharing. I'll just go after a bigger piece of the pie for me.

They need to put their trust in Him and also go out there and fill up application forms for work and not sit down and expect work to come running to them. Faith without works is dead. The other problem is when they find work and the pay is not what they dreamed of they refuse to take the job. Others are putting food on the table is because they know that what has been presented to them is the answer to their prayers, immaterial how small it looks, they appreciate it anyway.

Healthcare for example will save tons of money in the long run. Impatient blaming republicans want everything fixed now and do not see that the Dems did not create the whole economy mess entirely-how about the cost of wars etc.? The blame game from conservatives is only going to stall real progress from being made. these are rough times for many, the economy sucks, people have no jobs but instread of looking for actuall solutions all conservatives want to do is say it is the Dems fault. If all the energy from criticizing was put towards working together instead of stalling everything then things would progress and improvements would be made.

Gee! At my old age, having worked all my life, it is incredible that there are people like the ones above that do not know, nor understand that welfare is not the way of life in this nation. All my family have been and or are professionals. A brother an industrial engineer and retired Army colonel. What I see and experience is so different and opposite to what the conservatives in here are saying. A friend with a BS in Psychology and other educational/technical experiences is flipping hamburghers in spite of constantly looking for jobs in her category.

The main reason why we have a problem is because of the outsourcing of jobs. That is so simple to understand, but who will make a move to change this? DDidn't Obama promised tax relief for corporations creating jobs in the nation? Not exporting them? Not taking them where slavery andd child labor are rampant? Obama failed in being too soft with the opposition, expecting them to put the nation above everything, instead of their greedy interests ... and ... no less with the blue dogs repugs ...

Hillary should have been the POTUS, she would have handled the government and the nation with courage and strength... not patty pattying with the repugs...

God may have mercy upon our Nation!!!

As long as we focus on elections as Monday Night Football, get emotional about black vs. white, dem vs republican, liberal vs conservative and get en-wrapped in this soap opera they feed us, we will continue to get poorer. They are united in a common ambition fueled by their greed for money and power. That is man's character especially when he reaches high places. Until we can wake up and unite together as the common people who labor and make the rich richer by idly standing by, distracted by the show and deceived by their duplicity, we will never stop this disparity growing between the rich and poor.

You want socialism? Keep voting for a democratic party that wants to control your life and your children's. You think another country is better than this one? Go find it. There is nothing better than the good old USA..... Anywhere else you would not even be able to say the things that have been said here or even be able to protest without losing your life. Think about it. If what you want is free, free, free, and not have money of your own and end up like Europe then keep voting the way you are. Obama does not want job creation or for you to have a better life. Job creation would mean that you would actually be working and earning a living on your own without Government help.. but he wants you to depend on the Government for everything. I for one want a Government that will cut the spending, create jobs and stop shoving healthcare (Obama Care) down our throats and get the illegals out of here and stop paying for their health care when the Government right now sure as heck won't give it to our own seniors or handicapped without having to be denied 3 times before they will even consider it. That was your Government.. now things will change and for the better.

ARM loans that, get this, were SIGNED 5 YEARS EARLIER FROM 2001-03 UNDER A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT & CONGRESS? Have you forgotten the deregulation of banks under the Bush admin.? Why do you call repealing tax cuts for the rich "wealth redistribution" but didn't make a peep when the cuts were first implemented by Bush? Is that not ALSO your "wealth redistribution"??? Lets all hope that we can get obama care removed... Maybe you should read the fine print 81 percent of the people do not want the goverment to control our lives especially health care. If the Repulicans can not get obama care removed. every AMERICAN (and only Americans) over the age of 18 will have to buy some sort of health care... if you can not afford it... the Democrats do not care you will be billed by your goverment $4000.00 per person so that the goverment can tell you what will get for health care. So a married couple with not kids and just trying to survive in this day and time will have to find some way to pay $8000.00 a year to the people you put in office to help you out. Goverment should not be telling us what we have to do and we have to live our lives.. they are here to help up live a better life. not raise taxes and NOW take our money because we have a job that pays us a lot of money or provides us with benefits. Check your everday places you go each day like fast food or gas stations or the local mom and pop shops.... chances those people are working to just survive and do not have the ability to get benefits. If something is not done then start saving the money you need for food so you can send it to Obama and his family to take another vacation... but look at the bright side we will all lose those unwanted pounds and inchs from eating all the time... God please help up us all in our time of need!!!!!

81% of the people? Or 81% of the polled people? You clearly know next to nothing of polling practices. Sadly, I agree that the health care initiative was not what we all needed, but in-so-far as it didn't go far enough. Health for profit will lead our collective fat a$$es down the road of Rome. Some of us could use a little caloric deprivation. Our national obesity rate is a frigging disgrace. And it's what we eat, and laziness, period. The countries of our collective origins are far more fit than we. Our healthcare crisis hinges on this, and the fact that some of our largest for-profit insurers have literally HUNDREDS of people making over $100 millions dollars a year. Does ANYONE actually believe one person can deliver over $100 millions dollars of value to their company?!? Did they cure cancer??! HA! Why cure it, when you can treat it!? Anybody know which insurance company just gave its former CEO a 1.2 BILLION dollar platinum "retirement" parachute? Health for profit in America makes more money then Petroleum, and thats 100% fact. Go ahead, fact check all of that.. I'll wait. I voted for the President, and I would again, but despite what party I vote for, they have BOTH abandoned us on this issue, as they are significantly bought and paid for. And now back under the albeit partial influence of the conservative "party of new ideas" (BTW, Seriously.. I was born in the morning, but not this morning) we can be sure that now both sides of the isle will be sure to gridlock any chances of real progress in this country. Back to quietly dying out of sight somewhere, kids.

First, learn to spell rhetoric. Second what so many of the American public has chosen to ignore is that the housing and Wall Street problems began in the Clinton Administration. Remember the dor com bubble, the refusal by Democratis to reign in Fannir Mae and Freddie Mac, even though Bush ask for them to do so? Healthcare reform requires more than healtcare accessibility. The Massachusetts template that has been used is failing financially, Medicare is failing both financially and as a service, Canandians have to buy supplemental insurance to get adequate care and this is what you want us to have? I disagree.

IM not saying I have 100% confidence in national health care but to use Canada and Massachusetes as an example as to why not to have it would be comparable to saying we should not buy a new car because the neighbor bought one and it didn't last because they didn't take care of it. People in my bussiness are paying 100.oo a week for health care co-pay with dental, 70.oo without and if were lucky enough to have re entered the work force after 2001 thru 2003 we are working for less than we made in the late 90's. So 4000.oo a year is a savings if they can deliver for that figure. But people need to be working and paying taxes and corporations and the wealthy need to pay their fair share so you probably have nothing to worry about since we have in excess of 16 million people out of jobs.

jackpot, take some advice from an old man who has been a republican for a very long time. It is not the democrats that we need to worry about, most of the them are the same as you and I, they are your neighbors and your friends. The ones we have to be wary of are the progressives, who seek to hijack both parties. The tea party recognized the progressive values in both parties and took appropriate action. Democrats, Independents and Republicans united to defeat the ideals of the progressives and soundly rejected their agenda.

America was the winner tonight, with the able of assistance of Democrats, Independents and Republicans.

Too bad Harry Reid didn't follow her right out the door too. But the American people have spoken and now are giving the Republicans a second chance to prove themselves after enduring policy failures, higher deficits, higher unemployment rates and the rich getting richer and the welfare lines increasing. Americans have finally said enough of this. Let's just hope the Republicans can hold up to their new promise. Will Obama continue as before? or change course now. I think Boehner is sincere in his wish that government needs to get back to listening to the people once more...something that has been direly lacking the last couple of years.

The problem is not just the Dems or the GOP, the problem is having a system that incentivizes gridlock when one party controls both Congress and the White House. History shows that both Dems and GOP have in turn been "the party of NO", voting no on measures they had supported earlier, when they were in the minority.

People keep hoping that changing the party in power will fix things... it will not, because gridlock is built into the system. And gridlock in Congress is ultimately what the people are pi$$ed at. So how do we fix the system?

                                                                              1) Eliminate the party in power taking control of ALL chairmanships and what's up for debate, and instead apportion the committee chairmanships proportionately according to % each party holds, with the party that won able to choose which committees they get to control. That way each party is incentivized to tout they accomplished something, and no party can whine that they were locked out. Same for debates.

                                                                              2) Lower the votes required to overturn a filibuster. This incentivizes constructive compromise instead of "no, no, no".

                                                                              3) Level the playing field for the lobbies - i.e. restrict the amount contact and funding allowed to the lobbies and require government funding of publicly run lobbies that oppose established lobbies. This will result in a true democracy where everybody's interest can be represented, not just the corporate interests.

Our current situation of White House and Congress split between parties is the one situation that incentivizes both parties to get something done, as has historically happened with Reagan, Clinton, and even Bush in his last 2 years.

Unfortunately, in all other cases the system gets stuck in gridlock and becomes a huge waste of time. America is falling behind BIG TIME compared to the rest of the world. To keep doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.

                                                                              Let's fix the system.

Amazing what would happen if individual votes mattered again and people like Harry Reid were not able to keep running for office decades after first elected. Clean OUT Congress - we limit the president to 8 years (10 if taking office to finish another's term) - why not limit Congress to 12 years? Two terms in the Senate or in the House. Last I checked the Founding Fathers were not intent on making a senate or rep seat into a life time career.

If the money had not been spent, we would now be living a depression like it was in the 30's all over again, except this time hundreds of millions of lives are at stake, the big mistake was bailing out all the banks that caused alot of the problem and don't forget the heavy hitting fund managers, some that were caught, greed is what put us here and nothing else will fix the problem. Unfortunately, there is no "World Bankruptcy Court", the money owed to other countries does not go away, they just start demanding to take possession of the United States lock, stock and barrel if we do nothing, because our economy would just get worse, not better, we need to create jobs/revenue, cut tax cuts for the wealthy, why should'nt the wealthy pay a percentage of there income? everyone else does, and as far as the trickle down effect of the Bush era? forget it! It only trickled down in the wealthys bank accounts, to have the life of luxuary and to hell with the common hard working people you say? Think again my friend...

That if the Republicans don't toe the line they will just replace them in two years. Should be fun to watch even if nothing get done. Sorry for all those with out jobs though because thats not going to change.
