'Personhood' amendment fails in Colorado

Voters rejected Amendment 62 in Colorado. This amendment, referred to as the personhood amendment, would have defined a ‘person’ as beginning at conception. Early results show overwhelming opposition.

Other ballot measures to watch for as results continue to come in across the country: Proposition 19 in California would legalize marijuana; the amendment in Illinois would allow for recalling a governor by petition; and Proposition 106 in Arizona would prohibit mandatory participation in the health care system.

Who are they kidding? It would have been tied up in court then likely declared unconstitional anyway.

And if a fertilized egg is a person, what other legal rights does that give them? Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Hey, lady, you've got that person captured and kept in a tiny dark place for months! That's person abuse! Get them out of there immediately!

It saddens me that this is such a landslide "no". An amendment stating something we already know but still receives a "no" vote? This is an unfortunate issue I will never understand. My heart & prayers go out to those affected by abortion, especially the unborn. To quote Horton, "A person's a person, no matter how small."

A fertilized egg is NOT a human being. Fertilized eggs are passed without implanting every day. And it is NOT ok to require a woman to have a baby when she has been raped or when incest occurs and when the mom may die and do I really need to go on and on here!!! A woman should not be forced to have a baby!!!!!

It's nice to see sanity prevailed in Co. It's sad that we have to accept attempts to cram religious NOT scientific views that are really about oppressing women in order to get a modicum of fiscal restraint in Washington. Nope sorry, a full set of chromosomes is NOT a "person."  I personally have been in 2 situations where it would be despicable to have govt interference in my reproductive choices. My reproductive life is NOT govt business. If you are against abortion and even BIRTH CONTROL then fine don't use it, don't have one, but by damn don't you dare tell me what to do in such sensitive and PRIVATE arena. Republicans like Ken Buck are for limited govt only if you are a male. For females, they want to pull up a chair between us and our doctors.

A fertilized egg is not a human being... ok, and a zygote is not a human being, an embryo, a fetus, etc? Most fertilized eggs don’t implant right away, it can take up to two weeks. In another week or two, at the earliest, a positive pregnancy test can confirm it. By the 4th week the neural tube forms which will develop into the baby’s nervous system. This is why taking a prenatal vitamin is so important early in the pregnancy; a lack of folic acid can cause the child to develop spina bifida, a neural tube defect. The heart & circulatory system continue to develop and this little “cell mass” has a heartbeat at 5-6 weeks from conception, 18 days from implantation. Now, an extra set of chromosomes with a heartbeat and circulatory system is a little more than an extra set of chromosomes if you ask me. But what do I know, I’m not an abortionist. In relation to said chromosomes, gender is determined upon conception. So let’s think about this: by the time a woman thinks she's pregnant, confirms it with a pregnancy test, makes the decision to abort her baby, and then goes through with it, IT IS A LIFE!!! A living, breathing, blood pumping, boy/girl human life, or two if the cell has separated (which it does within the first week)! There’s your science! Speaking of science, a recent study shows abortion boosts breast cancer risks by 193% and you can follow the link below for the entire article. So my question is: when did we as a society decide that terminating this life was an acceptable behavior? When we as women didn’t have any more bras to burn? Come on people! I guess like most pro-choicer's, since it is a choice and not a child it doesn't become one until it's literally out on the table in the delivery room for you to see with your own two eyes. If a baby is crying in utero and it doesn't make a sound does it even exist? What about personal responsibility? I forgot to take my birth control, I'm pregnant (with a baby, not emotion, well I guess a little of that too for the consequences of irresponsibility) there's a pill for that! We didn't use protection, there's some extra chromosomes in me, uhh better make a phone call. Does anyone see how silly this sounds- for goodness sake, for procreations sake, for the sake of human life, GROW UP and take responsibility for your actions, society. And in the case of rape/ incest- yes, very unfortunate situations but how unfortunate is it for the human life being killed. A child should not have to suffer at the hand of his or her father’s crime. Putting a stop to abortion is not oppressing women's rights. It's protecting human life. As a human being who is alive as a result of adoption there is no other way for me to believe. I will continue to wage war on this topic until the day I die.

Dear isitoveryet, So well said and thank you for saying it! More and more people are realizing the truth you speak of and realizing how wrong abortion is. Thank you for sharing the truth.
