From NBC's political team
Another piece of history made tonight: New Mexico has elected the first female Hispanic governor in American history.
NBC News projects that Republican District Attorney Susana Martinez has won the governorship over Democrat Lt. Gov. Diane Denish.

What it all comes down to is I think when you start labeling people by their ethnicity instead of their education, performance and experience you are racist. Everyone in this country is not of the same decent and we all know that and do not need to be made aware of it constantly. I believe that if you have to resort to labeling people by their ethnicity than you feel you are superior to that individual or that individual is inferior to you. Of course I also believe you should not be embarrassed or feel you have to defend yourself because of your ethnicity I just believe it should not be an issue and it is sad that some people still have to bring it up like it is a setback. When an individual's ethnicity is used to describe them it becomes an issue and it should never be.
So Carlos, are you retarded or special needs? What would be politically correct enough for you?
The diversity of cultures and of nations can come together here in our great nation. This is truly a nation of many peoples and each brings a flavor and a "spice" to the great melting pot that is The United States. Hispanics, African Americans, and all my ancestors from Europe brought to this land The diversity of thought and of ideas. Every election from now on will demonstrate the greatness of the oportunity that this nation is willing to give all.
congratulations Mrs. Martinez on your win !!!
so happy that a Chicana woman can be all that she can be, regardless of all the racism and hate that surrounded your campaign, you are the future hope for all the Latino,Hispanic,Mexican-American, Chicano people that seek a brighter journey, regardless of where they came from (California to New York, Europe or Mexico) thank you for being the beginning, New Mexico is a great place to start, god bless you and your family and have an exciting, fulfilling term...
One of the points that many people are missing here is that Mrs. Martinez joins a list of first haspanics to be elected to high level positions in government, which mostly happened within the Republican party. Here is a list of a few more; first Hispanic-American U.S. Representative: Romualdo Pacheco, U.S. Senator: Octaviano Larrazolo, U.S. Treasurer: Romana Acosta Bañuelos, U.S. cabinet member: Lauro F. Cavazos, U.S. Surgeon General: Antonia Coello Novello, U.S. Attorney General: Alberto Gonzales, all who were either Republican or appointed by one. Let's not forget Miguel Estrada who would have been the first Hispanic American Supreme court justice under G. W. Bush had he not been filibustered by the Democrats. What ever happened to Republicans being the party of "old rich white men"?
I hope that more Hispanics realize this fact and stop being treated like a herd of cattle by the Democratic party who count on their vote by default. Especially here in L.A. where the Dems have the Hispanic vote sewed up.
As a former lifetime citizen of the Land of Enchantment who moved to a place with more economic oppurtunity after Richardson and his cronies DESTROYED the state that Gary Johnson left them,(with surpluses and fiscal discipline), I am glad to see some sanity returning to my home. I will never return, but I still own land, have family and friends there, and I want to see it succeed, and I think this is a step in the right direction.
and I don't care what color or racial alignment she claims, I care about her ideas and her plans, and from what I have read and heard, I like what I hear. so, Governor Martinez, good luck, bueno suerte, and all the best from the Sooner State!
no one seems to understand the basics. the different names to a persons herritage or liniage only servews to divide the people and america even more than it was in the past. i am sure that all hispanics, afican americans, chinese, korean, everyone is very proud of thier ancestory as i am myself, but i do not refere to myself as a norseman or norweigian and would not know how to respond if i were refered to in that manner because i prefere to be refered to as an american.
think about it, if you are stuck on being referred to by your ancestry, then maybe you should move back where your ancestors came from. you are here for a reason, because this is where you prefere to be, so referred to yourself as an American just like i do because i liove this country first and foremost and there is no nationality that has higher prestige than being american.
so, love this country, be an American. if you would rather be classified as something different, you should not be in American.
And Sandman makes a good point!
Welcome back the Party of Lincoln!
good point sandman, there are a lot of proud americans frome hispanic background that are coservative and understand that a situation where the government is giving everything away and paying for all the services, with taxs collected from the working, that the non working are demanding and dont pay for, wont last and is not a responsible government.
thank god for responsible people from all nationalities.
Heard a lot of slams, digs, and MUCH, (mucho) lies and wrong accusations from this woman as a candidate, but not any ideas of what she will do as governor. Both primary and election time facts were given about her cheating and wrongdoing, but it was ignored, and never answered. To me, the change the people were trying to state they want is to oust incumbents...not to overthrow any party or the President. Republicans were put in office through the use of negative campaigns on fear paid or by big corporations who don't want to be regulated and ultimately put out of business...what a thought with the Dems they might just have to bring their businesses back to US from China...But Republicans were not elected by the people, and they won't listen to them even if they were...Hideous party....hideous people...this just makes me sick!!! But after they reveal themselves there is always 2012!!!!
You just don't get it....no one really cares about ethnic background or race!! what they care about is to find good people to run our government. The time of judging people by their color or ethnice background is past. I do not believe this person was elected because she was hispanic or whatever you want to argue to call it.
It was on fear and negativity and blindness of voters who were swayed by her ads. She won the battle, but I predict she will lose the war... time will tell when she is on the job. Just can't do it with picking on others and telling lies about them...
how do you know? where are you from? and what are you?
Lone Ranger and Grammy, You are absolutely correct!!, This New Governor woman is an American First!! and second is her heritage. I am a hispanic who has lived in this country legally from the first step, live my life in a decent manner close to fifty years, and within the laws of this Country of Ours, and I am tired of all this pseudoname calling.
I consider myself an American just like any European, Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Pacific Islander, Indian American, Indians from India etc, etc, who has lived in this country long enough to give his life for the freedom we have.
Congratulations to the Lady, you were elected in a democratic way as it should be in this country.
First female Governor! That should be the emphasis. Governor for ALL people.
hey kimba V, what is "chicana"? it that a name or group or something? sounds derrogotory. who would want to be called that. chicana, very negative and disrespectful sounding.
YOU NEED TO BUY A DICTIONARY DUDE... AND I WOULD PREFER TO BE CALLED A CHICANA THAN HISPANIC ANY DAY, AND YES I WAS BORN IN THE USA...
Chicana
a woman or girl of Mexican descent who is a citizen of, or is living in, the U.S.
Chicanas
see CHICANO
Yes we are all "Americans" but we don't have to blot our respective ethnicities, religious beliefs etc. Italian Americans are proud of their heritage and should be as are Irish and German Americans. Hispanic simply means "Spanish speaking or descended from those who speak Spanish". Some say Latino to denote the African, Indian and Spanish mix that makes the Latino populations of the Americas, North, South and Central as well as the Caribbean. Whatever a person wants to refer to themselves as is their personal business. Certain people need to stop showing their insecurity (and proably jealousy) over any show of the beauty of different ethnicities in America. That is part of the beauty of America.
Should have thought about that "We are all Americans" stuff when you were calling our people @!$%#s, spics, gooks, redskins, sand-@!$%#s, towelheads, japs and all of the other derogative terms that none of the purveyors of such withdrew from until external enemies started to increase. The name-changer is just like Nebuchadnezzar in ancient Babylon who changed the Hebrew boys names to pagan ones. Worry about you want to call yourself. You can't, nor will i allow you to speak for me.
Please.
We are nowhere near to being as stupid as your expectation portends.
You anti-American maniac if you don't like too damn bad, and your analysis of America is only real in your head, your easily minipulated malleable psychotic mind. Free Palestine!!! Shalom; you freak.
Srw-2591205 sounds preposterous.
The message translates as "I am afraid as the world around me is changing and I can't handle it. I am a scared little puppy who has to blame Blacks, Latinos, Muslims and everybody else for my perceived loss of prestige in the world. I am afraid of the rise of China, Japan, Brazil, Venezuela and South Africa and I don't know where I will fit in. I have to refer to people as criminally-undereducated, even though they were 'educated' right here at home, on the range where the deer and the antelope and the buffalo used to play before the Euro-American cowboys (there were Black and Latino cowboys too) shot most of them for profit. I should be focusing on getting better at Math and Science in my own community and helping all American communities to do the same but I am much to shallow and insecure for that so I will blame the U.S.' noble position between 27 and 46 in the world in education on people who are criminally under-educated and don't control anything in America. Read your Bibles from the point of view that I say you should and not from a personal relationship you have with God and wait for the day when my version of God comes to remove these Booger men and women all over the world known as Blacks, Latinos, Muslims American Indians, poor Whites who disagree with me and Asians"
Make it plain next time.
Shalom.
i am afraid of nothing nor am i insecure or jealous of any other nationality either here in america or outside.
i also do not stup to lower myself to insult other people, calling them by derrogitory names that you referre to although i am familiar with your claims of such. but also of muslims and people from other nationalities and religions doing the same to each other and to the caucasions.
so your claim directed at my race and nationality as an excuse is also evident in your own race and nationality and also of all the others.
i understand that it is covienient to direct those accusations towards me to remove attention from all others that do the same.
as a democrat or someone that is insecure, jealous, or afraid would do.
To the left wing nuts out there na na na na na na. There's your hope and change!
please enough, hispanics - hispanos, latins - latinos, europeans - europeos!
the most important event this decade is that "the american people have spoken" we are one
nation under god with liberty and justice for all" god bless america the land of the free...
freedom to elect who we want, as a puerto rican woman i love america the beautiful!!!
and the only flag flying in front of my house is the american flag, because here is where i
earned my money, save it and spend it....thank god for the opportunity given to my parents
and my family...lesson well learned and earned...america america....
i live in new mexico and i for 1 am happy susanna was elected. what is all the hoopla about nationality. we are all americans deal with it. go susanna.
We always tend to remind ourselves of our heritage simply because we tie cultural values to it. Can you imagine America without the culture that was originally here with the Native Americans and the culture that was brought by our immigrating ancestors - NO MATTER WHERE YOU COME FROM. It is only the insecure that seem to blow off their heritage. That is what makes America so rich with culture and values and traditions and........ This country was formed with Christian values and again, the insecure will not like what I write but you must admit that the melting pot of America, traveling from North to South and East to West gives you a diverse perspective of all the cultures that came together and made us who we are. From music to athletics to intellectual properties, we know that all of this came from so many different ethnicities and cultures. This very blog is part of the America that allows you to voice your opinion without being jailed or even worst, beat up or killed! God Bless America!
I just wanted to say that I was born and raised in New Mexico 26 years and I have never been so disenchanted with my community and entire state. We have vast resources that other states and big biz want to take advantage of. Susana Martinez will sell New Mexico out and it is only a matter of time. She also fully supports one of the biggest businesses of all... the Prison System which is already overflowing with 80% population NON-VIOLENT drug offenders. These "criminals" need counseling and rehabilitation not incarceration. Also supports pay-day loans which extort the working class. People did not educate themselves whatsoever on this vote...they simply voted on a whim, party, or a name which is sad to me. Sad Sad day in the USA!
Up until 1967 America was either black or white but with the end of the European quota and the immigration legislation passed by the traitor Ted Kennedy in 1965 (burn in Hell) it changed America forever. We have been overrun by the colored hordes from around the world who did not and will not assimilate. When white people become a minority in America (the so called minority in America today) will hang us in the streets tomorrow, because they have been taught to blame the white man for all that is wrong in the world, you are the enemy. Wake white Americans, check out the "American Third Position".
OMG! Her best friend is Heather Wilson???????? Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you were to care about Latinos, Hispaniics or "Spanish people", first thing you and your husband need to do, is take a few spanish classes and learn about how they can be help, and not how to pushing us aside.
